We\u2019ll hear today from Nancy Leigh DeMoss and others about the importance of honoring our fathers and our mothers. Stay tuned.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition. Anyone who has listened to <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>for any length of time has undoubtedly heard you, near the end of a program say, \u201cI\u2019ve got one final assignment for you.\u201d And if they\u2019ve listened for any length of time, they know what\u2019s coming next\u2014the guest usually doesn\u2019t know what\u2019s coming next.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No. They get blindsided by it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you sneak up on folks with this final assignment. Usually, it\u2019s because, in our conversation with a guest, we have visited their relationship with their parents at some level. You decide: \u201cWell, if we\u2019re going to talk about your time with your parents, we need to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cend our time by talking about blessing your parents and honoring them.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019d turn to them, at the end of the broadcast, and I\u2019d say: \u201cOkay. What I want to do is I want to seat your mom \/ your dad across the table from you. Bob and I will leave the studio; and I just want you to look them in the eye, and I want you to give them a tribute. Can you do that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>For some folks it\u2019s easy; for some folks it\u2019s a challenge. But I don\u2019t remember many people saying, \u201cI don\u2019t think I can do that,\u201d or, \u201c\u2026want to do that.\u201d I think there\u2019s something in us\u2014we want to be able to say these things to our parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. There\u2019s something about doing it on radio\u2014of truly lifting up your parents and, \u201cI want to honor you for what you have meant in my life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Back 20 years ago, you wrote a book on the subject of honoring your parents. That book is now being re-released in a 20<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary Edition. It\u2019s called <em>The Forgotten Commandment<\/em>. It challenges us to honor our parents and to take the tangible step of writing out a written, formal tribute that we would hang in their home or that we would present to them in a special way, where we speak words of honor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember one of the guests we had on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>,who we talked with about this subject, was Nancy Leigh DeMoss. She had heard you give this message in a local church. It challenged her to write a tribute. She came back and shared that story with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Dennis, I believe this is an important commitment for all of us, as the children of God. One of the Ten Commandments is the command to honor our parents. It is the first commandment with promise\u2014that if we do honor our parents\u2014that it will go well with us, that we will be blessed, that generations to come will reap the blessing of that obedience. There\u2019s also in the Scripture a curse that is promised to those who reject their parents. So, if we want to walk in the way of blessing, then we will honor our parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019d asked me a few years ago, \u201cDo you honor your parents?\u201d I would have told you that I felt that I did; but in recent years, I\u2019ve learned\u2014thanks, in part, to the book, Dennis, that you wrote\u2014learned some of the ways that, without intending to, that I had really dishonored my parents. God used that tool to bring repentance to my own heart, to give me understanding, and to show me the need to go further in this pilgrimage of honoring my parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI grew up in a godly home. I have always had a sense of gratitude for that heritage. I have felt a commitment to honor them. And yet, as godly as my parents are, there are failures, and faults, and flaws in their lives. I found that in some of those areas I was, as you say in your book, putting my parents in prison to my expectations of what it meant to really be a godly parent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI found that it was important that I stop being a taker and get on the giving end in this relationship with my parents\u2014to focus on those areas in my parents\u2019 lives and their walk with the Lord that have contributed positively to my life\u2014to make a big deal about those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There are listeners who are thinking: \u201cYou know what? I\u2019d just rather not mess with it. I\u2019m 26\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m 31. I\u2019m pretty well cut off from my parents. I don\u2019t want to have to deal with going through all the gunk. Can I just move on with my life?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of what I hear you saying is: \u201cYou can\u2019t. The Scriptures <em>insist<\/em> that you move toward honor.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Not only do the Scriptures insist, but it is <em>impossible<\/em> for us to really distance ourselves from our parents. We <em>cannot <\/em>go through life and separate ourselves from that relationship\u2014so many have tried. I think, Dennis, I\u2019ve listened, over the past several years, to the stories of a number of single men and women who have sought to go back and establish relationship with their parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think a couple things we need to highlight here\u2014one, that it may not be easy. This is where the cross comes into our lives. The cross of Christ is a picture of the innocent being willing to absorb and bear the pain that the guilty inflicted upon Him. As men and women\u2014adult children\u2014we need to be willing to, if necessary, cross those barriers\u2014get past our own selfishness, and pride, and expectations\u2014yield up our rights and be willing to bear the cross on behalf of others\u2014and with no expectation of how the parent will respond.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, if we go into this thing of honoring our parents with the sense that: \u201cThis will make it the wonderful relationship I always hoped for it to be,\u201d then I\u2019m still going as a taker. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to go into that willing to honor parents, who may not be honorable\u2014willing to honor parents, who may have sinned <em>grievously<\/em> against their children, and may never come back seeking forgiveness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if we could see them as wounded people, who desperately need to be healed, then we might be willing to step into the shoes of Jesus, who went to the cross. He was willing to be wounded so that by His wounds we might be healed. It is our willingness to be wounded\u2014to bear the wounds of those who\u2019ve wronged us\u2014that ultimately may become the means to their being healed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, that, of course, is Nancy Leigh DeMoss talking about the power of expressing words of honor\u2014something that we\u2019ve invited a lot of guests on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> to do. We\u2019re going to get a chance to hear from some of those folks on today\u2019s program. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the people we\u2019re going to hear from is the former National Champion Coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, and the founder of Promise Keepers, Bill McCartney, who\u2014I don\u2019t know if he ever wrote a tribute to his mom and dad\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No, but he had received one. Coach Mac just talked about the profound emotional impact that this can have on a dad\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill: <\/strong>Nineteen ninety-five\u2014over the July 4<sup>th<\/sup> week\u2014our children were all gathered together. What had happened was\u2014one of them had read your book\u2014and in reading the book, had gotten an idea from it and had passed it along to the others. So, they asked Lindy and I to sit down\u2014and they had a surprise for us. We started with Mike. He read his tribute to us. It just touched us unlike anything could have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe got four plaques\u2014each one written in script in great detail\u2014about things that they remember about the upbringing, both with their mother and with their father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were generous with me. They had to be because their love for their mom is so profound. It comes out in these tributes that they paid to her. I tell you, when he started reading these things, there wasn\u2019t a dry eye in the room. It stayed that way through all four of them\u2014very deep, touching stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>I think it\u2019s good to hear from the perspective of the one being honored, just how\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You could hear the emotion in his voice. He\u2019s reliving it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, how meaningful that is for a parent to have children come back and speak words of honor. We had a guest on <em>FamilyLife Today\u2014<\/em>this was a number of years ago. Jani Ortlund is the daughter-in-law of Ray and Ann Ortlund. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRay was the pastor of Lake Avenue Congregational Church in southern California for years\u2014well-known author and speaker\u2014his wife, Ann, a well-known speaker, as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen their daughter-in-law, Jani, was on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, you said, \u201cDo you want to give a tribute to your mom?\u201d She did that\u2014she spoke words of honor to her mother.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Tribute]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jani: <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDear Mom, how I love you. Some of my earliest memories were sitting in your lap, having you turn the pages of my favorite book, <em>House Full of Prayers<\/em>. You always seemed to be ready to read to me, even though you were busy caring for all four children while Daddy traveled all week. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember on Friday afternoons\u2014you slipping into the bathtub and spraying yourself with perfume\u2014getting out of your work clothes and into your dress to greet Daddy as he returned after a week of traveling throughout the upper Midwest. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember you going to work so that I could go to Wheaton College. Thanks for that, Mom. I remember the days when I\u2019d be sick; and you\u2019d bring me a soft-boiled egg and toast-points up to my bedroom and take care of me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember you singing as you ironed, even though you were so tired. I remember you teaching me how to mop a kitchen floor properly and how to cook. I remember you taking me to the Red Owl, there in Minneapolis, and teaching me how to shop on a very limited budget. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember your own tears of joy as you showed me your one new outfit for that year when Daddy was going to take you to California with him on a trip. I remember you telling me about how to love your husband and how to love your children. They had spoken in our interview with them, on numerous occasions, about the impact their father had had in their lives. I\u2019d like our listeners to hear what Alex had to say about the impact his father had had in his life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Tribute]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>I want to say that there are not too many people that would have had a public opportunity to say, \u201cThank you,\u201d to their dad. So, I first take this as a great honor and a great privilege. I would say: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t ever and have never wanted to be anybody else\u2019s son. I also saw you seek the Lord for how to get past them. I have watched you struggle with multiple sclerosis and what it means for you, but I\u2019ve also seen you impact an untold number of people because of your faith\u2014because of your consistency. Dad, I want to say that I love you. I love you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI could do a lot worse than being just like you\u2014and I am, like Stephen, and like Shannon\u2014the three of us\u2014it is an honor to pass on a faith in Jesus Christ to our children that you introduced us to. We look back, and we do not see a perfect dad; but we see a dad who was very real for us. I think they hung them around the church where people could go and read these tributes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. The pastor was incredibly encouraged as he saw adults taking honor back home to their parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer name was Vicki Case. Her parents had divorced. Her dad was a very stoic man, and she wrote a tribute to her dad. I want our listeners to hear the rest of the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She shared about giving a tribute\u2014first, to her mom\u2014and because that went over so well, she ultimately wound up giving a tribute to her father, as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Vicki: <\/strong>It was her 70<sup>th<\/sup> birthday\u2014was coming. She wanted a family-and-friends dinner at one of her favorite restaurants. I thought: \u201cOh! This is going to be the time to do that tribute that Dennis talks about.\u201d I contacted the invitees and asked them to either say something funny, do a tribute, or do something. I knew I was going to do a tribute, but I didn\u2019t want to demand that of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had the dinner party. I read my tribute, and I looked up at each member of the party. There were tears coming down everyone\u2019s faces, including my own. Then, I knew the power of a tribute. My mom had had a tough life, but she was a good mother. She struggled as a single mother. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was marvelous. She put it in a book\u2014showed people whenever they would come in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy parents were divorced, and I saw what happened with my mom. I thought: \u201cOh, gosh! When could we do one for my dad?\u201d Of course, you want to repeat a good experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, Christmas Eve, I found out that my father was inviting his brother down from Ohio\u2014and all of his family\u2014all of his children and his wife. They\u2019re never together\u2014I mean, all the family is never together. I thought, \u201cOh-oh, this is a good opportunity.\u201d So, I called my brother, my sisters, called the children of my uncle, and told them what I had in mind. We would spring it on the brothers on Christmas Eve\u2014and do tributes to them or something funny.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tActually, my uncle\u2019s family ended up doing quite a routine, but my father\u2019s children did tributes. He didn\u2019t know anything about it. I looked around. It was so quiet. My father is not an emotional man; but what he did was\u2014he came up after it was all over. He said to me\u2014and in a way I didn\u2019t know how to take this: \u201cI understand you were responsible for this.\u201d I thought, \u201cOh-oh, I\u2019m in trouble now.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen he said: \u201cIt\u2019s the nicest thing that anyone\u2019s ever done for me in my life. Thank you.\u201d He\u2019s not an emotional person. Two days later, my stepmother calls me and she said: \u201cI want you to know that that night your father sat on the edge of his bed and he said, \u2018Now I can die because I\u2019ve heard from all of my children.\u2019\u201d So, I knew the power of a tribute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s Vicki Case, sharing about the tribute she wrote for her father.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You can hear the healing that takes place in that, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She talks about the power of a tribute. Thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition. Anyone who has listened to <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>for any length of time has undoubtedly heard you, near the end of a program say, \u201cI\u2019ve got one final assignment for you.\u201d And if they\u2019ve listened for any length of time, they know what\u2019s coming next\u2014the guest usually doesn\u2019t know what\u2019s coming next.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>No. They get blindsided by it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>But you sneak up on folks with this final assignment. Usually, it\u2019s because, in our conversation with a guest, we have visited their relationship with their parents at some level. You decide: \u201cWell, if we\u2019re going to talk about your time with your parents, we need to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u2014\u201cend our time by talking about blessing your parents and honoring them.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019d turn to them, at the end of the broadcast, and I\u2019d say: \u201cOkay. What I want to do is I want to seat your mom \/ your dad across the table from you. Bob and I will leave the studio; and I just want you to look them in the eye, and I want you to give them a tribute. Can you do that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>For some folks it\u2019s easy; for some folks it\u2019s a challenge. But I don\u2019t remember many people saying, \u201cI don\u2019t think I can do that,\u201d or, \u201c\u2026want to do that.\u201d I think there\u2019s something in us\u2014we want to be able to say these things to our parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Yes. There\u2019s something about doing it on radio\u2014of truly lifting up your parents and, \u201cI want to honor you for what you have meant in my life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Back 20 years ago, you wrote a book on the subject of honoring your parents. That book is now being re-released in a 20<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary Edition. It\u2019s called <em>The Forgotten Commandment<\/em>. It challenges us to honor our parents and to take the tangible step of writing out a written, formal tribute that we would hang in their home or that we would present to them in a special way, where we speak words of honor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember one of the guests we had on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>,who we talked with about this subject, was Nancy Leigh DeMoss. She had heard you give this message in a local church. It challenged her to write a tribute. She came back and shared that story with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Dennis, I believe this is an important commitment for all of us, as the children of God. One of the Ten Commandments is the command to honor our parents. It is the first commandment with promise\u2014that if we do honor our parents\u2014that it will go well with us, that we will be blessed, that generations to come will reap the blessing of that obedience. There\u2019s also in the Scripture a curse that is promised to those who reject their parents. So, if we want to walk in the way of blessing, then we will honor our parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019d asked me a few years ago, \u201cDo you honor your parents?\u201d I would have told you that I felt that I did; but in recent years, I\u2019ve learned\u2014thanks, in part, to the book, Dennis, that you wrote\u2014learned some of the ways that, without intending to, that I had really dishonored my parents. God used that tool to bring repentance to my own heart, to give me understanding, and to show me the need to go further in this pilgrimage of honoring my parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI grew up in a godly home. I have always had a sense of gratitude for that heritage. I have felt a commitment to honor them. And yet, as godly as my parents are, there are failures, and faults, and flaws in their lives. I found that in some of those areas I was, as you say in your book, putting my parents in prison to my expectations of what it meant to really be a godly parent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI found that it was important that I stop being a taker and get on the giving end in this relationship with my parents\u2014to focus on those areas in my parents\u2019 lives and their walk with the Lord that have contributed positively to my life\u2014to make a big deal about those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>There are listeners who are thinking: \u201cYou know what? I\u2019d just rather not mess with it. I\u2019m 26\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m 31. I\u2019m pretty well cut off from my parents. I don\u2019t want to have to deal with going through all the gunk. Can I just move on with my life?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of what I hear you saying is: \u201cYou can\u2019t. The Scriptures <em>insist<\/em> that you move toward honor.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Nancy: <\/strong>Not only do the Scriptures insist, but it is <em>impossible<\/em> for us to really distance ourselves from our parents. We <em>cannot <\/em>go through life and separate ourselves from that relationship\u2014so many have tried. I think, Dennis, I\u2019ve listened, over the past several years, to the stories of a number of single men and women who have sought to go back and establish relationship with their parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think a couple things we need to highlight here\u2014one, that it may not be easy. This is where the cross comes into our lives. The cross of Christ is a picture of the innocent being willing to absorb and bear the pain that the guilty inflicted upon Him. As men and women\u2014adult children\u2014we need to be willing to, if necessary, cross those barriers\u2014get past our own selfishness, and pride, and expectations\u2014yield up our rights and be willing to bear the cross on behalf of others\u2014and with no expectation of how the parent will respond.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, if we go into this thing of honoring our parents with the sense that: \u201cThis will make it the wonderful relationship I always hoped for it to be,\u201d then I\u2019m still going as a taker. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to go into that willing to honor parents, who may not be honorable\u2014willing to honor parents, who may have sinned <em>grievously<\/em> against their children, and may never come back seeking forgiveness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if we could see them as wounded people, who desperately need to be healed, then we might be willing to step into the shoes of Jesus, who went to the cross. He was willing to be wounded so that by His wounds we might be healed. It is our willingness to be wounded\u2014to bear the wounds of those who\u2019ve wronged us\u2014that ultimately may become the means to their being healed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, that, of course, is Nancy Leigh DeMoss talking about the power of expressing words of honor\u2014something that we\u2019ve invited a lot of guests on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> to do. What had happened was\u2014one of them had read your book\u2014and in reading the book, had gotten an idea from it and had passed it along to the others. So, they asked Lindy and I to sit down\u2014and they had a surprise for us. We started with Mike. He read his tribute to us. It just touched us unlike anything could have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe got four plaques\u2014each one written in script in great detail\u2014about things that they remember about the upbringing, both with their mother and with their father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were generous with me. I tell you, when he started reading these things, there wasn\u2019t a dry eye in the room. We had a guest on <em>FamilyLife Today\u2014<\/em>this was a number of years ago. I remember you telling me about how to love your husband and how to love your children. I think they hung them around the church where people could go and read these tributes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Right. The pastor was incredibly encouraged as he saw adults taking honor back home to their parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer name was Vicki Case. Her parents had divorced. Her dad was a very stoic man, and she wrote a tribute to her dad. She wanted a family-and-friends dinner at one of her favorite restaurants. I thought: \u201cOh! This is going to be the time to do that tribute that Dennis talks about.\u201d I contacted the invitees and asked them to either say something funny, do a tribute, or do something. I knew I was going to do a tribute, but I didn\u2019t want to demand that of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had the dinner party. I read my tribute, and I looked up at each member of the party. There were tears coming down everyone\u2019s faces, including my own. Then, I knew the power of a tribute. My mom had had a tough life, but she was a good mother. She struggled as a single mother. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was marvelous. She put it in a book\u2014showed people whenever they would come in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy parents were divorced, and I saw what happened with my mom. I thought: \u201cOh, gosh! When could we do one for my dad?\u201d Of course, you want to repeat a good experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, Christmas Eve, I found out that my father was inviting his brother down from Ohio\u2014and all of his family\u2014all of his children and his wife. They\u2019re never together\u2014I mean, all the family is never together. I thought, \u201cOh-oh, this is a good opportunity.\u201d So, I called my brother, my sisters, called the children of my uncle, and told them what I had in mind. We would spring it on the brothers on Christmas Eve\u2014and do tributes to them or something funny.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tActually, my uncle\u2019s family ended up doing quite a routine, but my father\u2019s children did tributes. He didn\u2019t know anything about it. I looked around. It was so quiet. My father is not an emotional man; but what he did was\u2014he came up after it was all over. He said to me\u2014and in a way I didn\u2019t know how to take this: \u201cI understand you were responsible for this.\u201d I thought, \u201cOh-oh, I\u2019m in trouble now.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen he said: \u201cIt\u2019s the nicest thing that anyone\u2019s ever done for me in my life. Thank you.\u201d He\u2019s not an emotional person. Two days later, my stepmother calls me and she said: \u201cI want you to know that that night your father sat on the edge of his bed and he said, \u2018Now I can die because I\u2019ve heard from all of my children.\u2019\u201d So, I knew the power of a tribute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s Vicki Case, sharing about the tribute she wrote for her father.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>You can hear the healing that takes place in that, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>She talks about the power of a tribute.
