We were happily married. We had two wonderful daughters. We built our dream home, and it really got hard to get up in the morning. It didn\u2019t make any sense. That, I think, was God\u2019s pull on my heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I went running because I found hope. I went running to God, and jumped into church, and was taking my girls. One day, my husband came home with a Bible. I thought: \u201cThis is great! We\u2019re going to be on the same page!\u201d Not too long after, he told me that he decided he was an atheist.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, March 10<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. There are lots of challenges that couples in a spiritually-mismatched marriage will face. One of the big challenges has to do with what we say and what we don\u2019t say to our own children about our spiritual beliefs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to talk about that today. Stay tuned. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. The other day, Mary Ann was making breakfast; and she was scrambling some eggs. When it got time to serve them, I wanted to make sure that I got exactly the same amount of eggs on my plate as she got on her plate because I wanted to be thoroughly biblical on how we were doing our eggs. You know what I mean; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, I want to make sure we were both equally yoked. [Laughter] How\u2019s that for a joke? I just made the whole thing up!\u2014just made it up right there myself\u2014equally yoked!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> No way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How about that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> We have to tell that one on our blog: [Laughter] \u201cLadies, next time you make eggs\u2014make them equal.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, Bob is referring to a passage of Scripture. For a lot of our listeners, this is no laughing matter. Second Corinthians, Chapter 6, verse 14 says, \u201cDo not be unequally yoked with unbelievers\u201d\u2014it goes on to say\u2014\u201cfor what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it\u2019s not talking about eggs\u2014we should just say that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the yoking there really refers to when you put a beam across the shoulders of the two ox that are pulling the plow; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If they\u2019re not equal, then one ox is going to run ahead; and you\u2019re just going to plow in a circle\u2014is what\u2019s going to happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And if you get some little oxen, they can be impacted by this unequally-yoked situation. We have\u2014as you\u2019ve already heard their voices\u2014a couple of guests with us, here on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em> Dineen Miller and Lynn Donovan join us again. We love being here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> It\u2019s always a great time when we\u2019re here. Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you liked the joke. Did you love the joke?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I had no idea where he was going. I just want you to know\u2014in 21 years, that is one of the worst.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> One of the worst.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s really one of the worst.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> I forgot we were on the air. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t want to wait.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to read the mail we get on that. Dineen Miller is a women\u2019s leader at church, a youth counselor, author, a wife, and a mom. Lynn is a speaker, an author, a wife, and mom, as well. You both had joined together earlier to co-author a book just to women who are in unequally-yoked situations with their husbands\u2014a spiritually- mismatched relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis book, <em>Not Alone,<\/em> is geared toward the parenting side of this spiritually-mismatched situation; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Lynn, you came at this whole thing of being spiritually-mismatched after having experienced divorce, being a single parent, and then remarrying. Explain to our listeners how you ended up in this relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Sure. I guess I\u2019ll start at\u2014I was raised in a Christian home. I went to church every Sunday with my family. However, I really believe I had more of a relationship with the church instead of Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> And in my\u2014I married young\u2014my first marriage. I fell away from God at that time\u2014was searching. I completely lost my focus on Christ. I call those my prodigal years. I was one of those wandering prodigals who went far away from the farm. At that time, I divorced. I became a single mother, and I\u2019m raising a son. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m not going to church. At that point, I met my new husband. He was different than I was\u2014and intriguing. We fell in love, and we married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHowever, it was about three years into our marriage\u2014I know the Lord started to woo me home. He opened His arms and said, \u201cCome home, My daughter.\u201d I ran home to Him, with His arms wide open\u2014threw myself into His embrace. But as I ran home, I was dragging behind me my unbelieving spouse\u2014my new spouse. He was kicking and screaming, all the way. It was at that time I realized: \u201cWait a minute. We\u2019re not seeing life at all the same. We are spiritually-mismatched.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were going through a spiritual revolution in your life, and God was at work with you; but your husband was not a part of that equation, at that point. So, all of a sudden, here you are\u2014God\u2019s doing an amazing thing for you. You feel like the new creation that you are, and it leaves you in a situation where you are spiritually-mismatched.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I have to ask you, Lynn\u2014during those prodigal years when you were dating this guy, who would become your husband and then would be a part of this spiritual revolution that occurred in your life\u2014when you were dating, did your conscience\u2014did that spiritual and Christian upbringing kind of echo in your mind, \u201cHey, I don\u2019t know if this is a good idea,\u201d or was it just full-speed ahead for you and nothing like that was on the radar?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Dennis, I did have that conscience check. I knew what the Bible said\u2014\u201cDo not be unequally yoked.\u201d I did know what God\u2019s Word said, but I was in complete disobedience. Like a lot of young wives or young women, you think, \u201cLove can conquer all.\u201d Love can do amazing things, but God has that verse in the Bible for a reason because He knows how hard we will struggle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think we just need to remind our listeners, here, that both of your husbands know that you\u2019ve written these books. It\u2019s not like they\u2019re out on the market and your husbands go: \u201cWhat? You wrote this?\u201d And they know you\u2019re here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014talking about this. They\u2019ve said it is fine with them\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014for you guys to share with other people some of the challenges that you\u2019ve been through.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, you\u2019ve used your real names.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Yes, and theirs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s with that? How come those guys let that happen?\u2014really\u2014seriously.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> It\u2019s a God-thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> It\u2019s totally a God-thing. Nothing gets in His way\u2014not even us. [Laughter] Praise God!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Dineen, tell us your story. How did you wind up spiritually-mismatched in marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t grow up in the church. My relationship with God\u2014I can look back and see how protected I was, growing up; but I didn\u2019t have that influence. I met my husband and fell in love with him, actually as\u2014we were high school sweethearts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe got married, and we had our two girls. I kind of walked in and out of relationship with God at different times in my life\u2014in pursuit for myself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a time of our lives where we had it all. We were happily married. We had two wonderful daughters. We built our dream home, and it really got hard to get up in the morning. It didn\u2019t make any sense. That, I think, was God\u2019s call on my heart to say: \u201cOkay, you\u2019ve been living your life for everybody else and yourself for a long time. Come try and live it for Me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I went running because I found hope. I went running to God, and jumped into church and was taking my girls. One day, my husband came home with a Bible. I thought: \u201cThis is great! We\u2019re going to be on the same page!\u201d And not too long after, he told me that he\u2019d decided he was an atheist, which I didn\u2019t expect.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why did he bring the Bible home, then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> I think he was searching for himself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Had he seen the change in your life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> I\u2019m sure he did. I\u2019m sure he did because it was like a whole new world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I remember distinctly the day that Mary Ann and I got married\u2014one of the things that popped into my mind, as I was about to walk out and say, \u201cI do,\u201d\u2014for a lifetime, with this woman\u2014I thought: \u201cWhat if she changes? What if she\u2019s not the same woman ten years from now that I\u2019m marrying today\u2014that I\u2019m saying, \u2018I do,\u2019 to today?\u201d The truth is\u2014she has changed. She\u2019s not the same woman, and I\u2019m not the same man. God gives grace in the midst of all of that; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But by the same token, you guys had a kind of a change that neither of your husbands were counting on when they said, \u201cI do,\u201d to you. They were not planning to marry some Jesus freak; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And that\u2019s what they wound up with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s the biggest conflict that occurred? If you could summarize it\u2014and I know it\u2019s a bunch of small rubs in different direction\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut for you, Dineen, how did it impact him?\u2014your new-found faith and your marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> It\u2019s such a vast difference of worldviews because\u2014with his extreme and my extreme, in his perspective\u2014our very definition of life is complete opposites. So, it does make it very challenging to find common ground on that\u2014and agree to disagree, at times\u2014because, until one of us changes our worldview,\u2014and I can tell you it\u2019s not going to be me\u2014we\u2019re not going to agree. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou cannot agree when one believes there is a God and one does not\u2014when it\u2019s that clear cut. So, that\u2019s the biggest challenge because we work from such different perspectives. Everything we live through, look at, approach is from our different perspectives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, you do have points of agreement. There are things where you both agree that lying is wrong. You\u2019re not going to let the kids tell lies, so\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014so there is some commonality that you can lean into.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Right, of course.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But there are also things that are very precious to you\u2014that he just says: \u201cI don\u2019t agree. I\u2019m not there. That\u2019s fine for you, but not for me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The same kind of situation with you\u2014a clash of worldviews is the biggest issue, Lynn?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Yes, it was. In the early years, it was met with hostility. We had to come through that. I think, for most men and women who are married to a pre-believer\u2014we like to call them \u201cpre-believers.\u201d They go through this season\u2014I know I did\u2014of profound loneliness. You\u2019re like: \u201cWait a minute. I\u2019m married. How can I feel lonely?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt comes out of this place\u2014where you\u2019re growing in your faith, and things are happening to you, and that intimacy that you want to share: \u201cLook what God\u2019s doing in my life,\u201d\u2014and they do not want to hear it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s very common in a spiritually-mismatched marriage\u2014where we go through a season of loneliness. And then, other areas\u2014parenting, and the big one is going to church, and how\u2014when you\u2019re a spiritual-mismatched family\u2014you don\u2019t look like other church families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> For me, I so much wanted to look like everybody else; but then, I came to this place\u2014I think Dineen and I both did\u2014it\u2019s like\u2014we kind of like it now that we\u2019re not the typical family. We kind of sit on the outskirts\u2014we don\u2019t always fit in\u2014but we see the others that don\u2019t exactly fit in, either. I love that place now, but it was hard in the early years. I just wanted my husband to sit in church with me and read the Bible with me. I so much wanted that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, there are things that are surrendered. We go to Jesus, and He fills up those empty places.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The last time the two of you were here, we talked about the challenges you face in a spiritually-mismatched marriage\u2014the dynamics between a husband and a wife. You\u2019d written a book, <em>Winning Him Without Words<\/em>\u2014we kind of dove into that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve, now, written a second book that talks about the challenges you face\u2014as a believing mom with an unbelieving husband\u2014trying to mold and shape the direction for your children when you and your husband may not always be on exactly the same page about that direction. I know, like I said, there are things you do agree on. There are values or character qualities that you\u2019re all on the same page on, but there are also things that you think are pretty important\u2014I\u2019m thinking of things like reading your Bible and having devotions. Did you, Lynn, raise your kids\u2014you had a son. How old was Bradley when you came to faith?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> He was young. He was young.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Toddler?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Yes, yes; and he was raised\u2014I took him to church with me, as well. Then, I remarried in there. I still went to church, and I took my son and my daughter when she got older. Church attendance, for me, is honestly a mountain I would die on. It is the hill I would die on. I so firmly believe in the community. God created us to be in relationship with Him and with others, especially when I come from a home where Dad\u2019s not exactly modeling faith. I needed my kids to be around other adults and around other children so that they would learn what community is about, what God\u2019s kingdom is about, and to see how adults modeled prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, personally, one of the most powerful things that I ever did\u2014and it kind of was an accident\u2014was to allow my children to see me reading my Bible every morning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you live your faith in front of little eyes, and you\u2019re in love with Jesus, and you\u2019re talking about Him in just ordinary, everyday conversation, that\u2019s the most powerful witness you can give to your children. I have story after story how that happened with my children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m hearing two exhortations here, not merely one to those who are in spiritually-mismatched marriages, but also to single-parent moms.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Or single-parent dads\u2014to just not get isolated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Both situations demand that we be in a community of faith that encourages us to not lose heart in well-doing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was there any conflict with your husband about the idea of taking your kids to church or you going to church on your own? Did he have any qualms because he said, \u201cI\u2019m not going;\u201d right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct. No, I personally didn\u2019t experience conflict; but I do know that happens a lot in these kinds of marriages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where you have to have communication. You have\u2014I would say, \u201cI need to take my kids to church.\u201d My husband was okay with that; but I know other moms do struggle in that area\u2014where Dad says, \u201cNo.\u201d I think that\u2019s where it comes down to love and respect.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Right; right. With my husband and me, when I was taking our daughters to church, we had to talk about it. He said he was fine with me taking them as long as when they were old enough to make their own choice that I would let them. I agreed to that. I trusted God for that, and both my girls know Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So here\u2019s the key question: \u201cDid your husbands help get the kids ready to go to church?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> No. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No. I could answer that! They were sleeping in on Sunday morning. I know what I\u2019d be doing. Come on! I\u2019m not going to get up and help get the kids ready for church on Sunday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> You know, Dennis\u2014that is such a hard thing because you\u2019re struggling to get\u2014what if you have three or four little ones, and you\u2019ve got to get them dressed by yourself, and you\u2019re angry and you\u2019re upset?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s what I\u2019m getting at.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Oh, yes. But I want to tell every mother listening: \u201cIf you\u2019re in that place, right now, that you don\u2019t think it\u2019s worth it\u2014I will be the voice to tell you: \u2018It is worth it! Make every effort. Get up. Set things up on Saturday night. <em>Pray<\/em> for Sunday morning so that you\u2019re not angry and you don\u2019t have conflict. Get the clothes out for Sunday morning. Put a snack in the car\u2014everything that you do to get your kids into church so that they can be around other believers\u2014I absolutely believe God honors and rewards. It\u2019s valuable to your children.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I could see how you\u2019d have a pity party because you\u2019d be driving to church, like a single-parent mom\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Yes, and be mad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And when the kids look at you and say [yawning]: \u201cWhy do we have to go to church? Dad doesn\u2019t go to church. Why do we have to go to church?\u201d Did you ever hear that from your girls?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Oh, yes; and it is a battle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat Lynn said is so true. We really\u2014it\u2019s a prayerful journey, through the week, to get ready for it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What did you tell them, though, when they said, \u201cWhy do we have to? Dad doesn\u2019t have to?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> When they were young, it was: \u201cBecause this is important. This is what we need to do. It\u2019s important for us. This is our opportunity to be in the house of God, to worship, to learn about Him. This is what life is most about, and it\u2019s important.\u201d As they became teenagers, that became a stronger battle. For my oldest\u2014she\u2019s very stubborn. For me, I knew, at one point, I was going to have to back off. She stopped going for a while. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was out of town one weekend. I got home\u2014she was about 16\u2014and she said, \u201cMom, I went to church this weekend with some friends.\u201d She said, \u201cDuring the service, I went up and recommitted my life to Christ because\u201d\u2014she said\u2014\u201cI just knew I had to do it.\u201d I was just ready to get on my knees, and cry, and praise God\u2014but I didn\u2019t want to freak my daughter out\u2014but inside, I was rejoicing because God\u2019s faithfulness is just so amazing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis same young woman is now 24. Last year, she married her husband, who is a very strong young man, who loves Jesus. This was one of her requirements for her future husband\u2014that he would know Jesus. For her\u2014to walk into a marriage, equally-yoked\u2014God was faithful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There is going to be a lot of life lived out in your family in the years ahead. Your husband is being surrounded by people of faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Amen! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you don\u2019t know what valley your kids are going to have to walk through \/ what challenges they\u2019re going to face; but your husband is not going to be a casual observer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> No kidding!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s going to see life lived\u2014up close and personal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> I think he is already because we have our family dinners together. A lot of the times, I\u2019ll ask Keith, my son-in-law, \u201cWill you say the blessing on the meal?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, my husband gets to see this new man in our family say a blessing over our food.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s fantastic. I got two action points out of today\u2019s broadcast: Number one\u2014if you\u2019re in one of these marriages \/ one of these families: Embrace your assignment. Scripture commands you: \u201cHang in there, and make your home holy. Make your kids holy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, if you\u2019re <em>not<\/em> in a spiritually-mismatched family, you just need to stop, right now, and give thanks that you\u2019re both marching in the same direction. Then, you need to both get on your knees and leverage what God has given you. Don\u2019t waste any of it because, I think, He\u2019s got an assignment for every person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And maybe part of the assignment, for couples who are in-sync spiritually, is to look around at people you know who aren\u2019t in that same situation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGet a copy of the books that Lynn and Dineen have written. had it all. We were happily married. We had two wonderful daughters. We built our dream home, and it really got hard to get up in the morning. It didn\u2019t make any sense. That, I think, was God\u2019s pull on my heart. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I went running because I found hope. I went running to God, and jumped into church, and was taking my girls. One day, my husband came home with a Bible. I thought: \u201cThis is great! We\u2019re going to be on the same page!\u201d Not too long after, he told me that he decided he was an atheist.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, March 10<sup>th<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine. There are lots of challenges that couples in a spiritually-mismatched marriage will face. One of the big challenges has to do with what we say and what we don\u2019t say to our own children about our spiritual beliefs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to talk about that today. Stay tuned. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. The other day, Mary Ann was making breakfast; and she was scrambling some eggs. When it got time to serve them, I wanted to make sure that I got exactly the same amount of eggs on my plate as she got on her plate because I wanted to be thoroughly biblical on how we were doing our eggs. You know what I mean; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, I want to make sure we were both equally yoked. [Laughter] How\u2019s that for a joke? I just made the whole thing up!\u2014just made it up right there myself\u2014equally yoked!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> No way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How about that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> We have to tell that one on our blog: [Laughter] \u201cLadies, next time you make eggs\u2014make them equal.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, Bob is referring to a passage of Scripture. For a lot of our listeners, this is no laughing matter. Second Corinthians, Chapter 6, verse 14 says, \u201cDo not be unequally yoked with unbelievers\u201d\u2014it goes on to say\u2014\u201cfor what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it\u2019s not talking about eggs\u2014we should just say that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the yoking there really refers to when you put a beam across the shoulders of the two ox that are pulling the plow; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> If they\u2019re not equal, then one ox is going to run ahead; and you\u2019re just going to plow in a circle\u2014is what\u2019s going to happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And if you get some little oxen, they can be impacted by this unequally-yoked situation. We love being here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> It\u2019s always a great time when we\u2019re here. Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you liked the joke. Did you love the joke?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I had no idea where he was going. I just want you to know\u2014in 21 years, that is one of the worst.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> One of the worst.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s really one of the worst.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> I forgot we were on the air. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t want to wait.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to read the mail we get on that. Dineen Miller is a women\u2019s leader at church, a youth counselor, author, a wife, and a mom. Lynn is a speaker, an author, a wife, and mom, as well. You both had joined together earlier to co-author a book just to women who are in unequally-yoked situations with their husbands\u2014a spiritually- mismatched relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis book, <em>Not Alone,<\/em> is geared toward the parenting side of this spiritually-mismatched situation; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Lynn, you came at this whole thing of being spiritually-mismatched after having experienced divorce, being a single parent, and then remarrying. Explain to our listeners how you ended up in this relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Sure. I guess I\u2019ll start at\u2014I was raised in a Christian home. I went to church every Sunday with my family. However, I really believe I had more of a relationship with the church instead of Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> And in my\u2014I married young\u2014my first marriage. I fell away from God at that time\u2014was searching. I completely lost my focus on Christ. I call those my prodigal years. I was one of those wandering prodigals who went far away from the farm. At that time, I divorced. I became a single mother, and I\u2019m raising a son. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m not going to church. At that point, I met my new husband. He was different than I was\u2014and intriguing. We fell in love, and we married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHowever, it was about three years into our marriage\u2014I know the Lord started to woo me home. He opened His arms and said, \u201cCome home, My daughter.\u201d I ran home to Him, with His arms wide open\u2014threw myself into His embrace. But as I ran home, I was dragging behind me my unbelieving spouse\u2014my new spouse. He was kicking and screaming, all the way. It was at that time I realized: \u201cWait a minute. We\u2019re not seeing life at all the same. We are spiritually-mismatched.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were going through a spiritual revolution in your life, and God was at work with you; but your husband was not a part of that equation, at that point. So, all of a sudden, here you are\u2014God\u2019s doing an amazing thing for you. You feel like the new creation that you are, and it leaves you in a situation where you are spiritually-mismatched.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I have to ask you, Lynn\u2014during those prodigal years when you were dating this guy, who would become your husband and then would be a part of this spiritual revolution that occurred in your life\u2014when you were dating, did your conscience\u2014did that spiritual and Christian upbringing kind of echo in your mind, \u201cHey, I don\u2019t know if this is a good idea,\u201d or was it just full-speed ahead for you and nothing like that was on the radar?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Dennis, I did have that conscience check. I knew what the Bible said\u2014\u201cDo not be unequally yoked.\u201d I did know what God\u2019s Word said, but I was in complete disobedience. Like a lot of young wives or young women, you think, \u201cLove can conquer all.\u201d Love can do amazing things, but God has that verse in the Bible for a reason because He knows how hard we will struggle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think we just need to remind our listeners, here, that both of your husbands know that you\u2019ve written these books. It\u2019s not like they\u2019re out on the market and your husbands go: \u201cWhat? You wrote this?\u201d And they know you\u2019re here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>\u2014talking about this. They\u2019ve said it is fine with them\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014for you guys to share with other people some of the challenges that you\u2019ve been through.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, you\u2019ve used your real names.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Yes, and theirs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s with that? How come those guys let that happen?\u2014really\u2014seriously.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> It\u2019s a God-thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> It\u2019s totally a God-thing. Nothing gets in His way\u2014not even us. [Laughter] Praise God!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Dineen, tell us your story. How did you wind up spiritually-mismatched in marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t grow up in the church. My relationship with God\u2014I can look back and see how protected I was, growing up; but I didn\u2019t have that influence. I met my husband and fell in love with him, actually as\u2014we were high school sweethearts. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe got married, and we had our two girls. I kind of walked in and out of relationship with God at different times in my life\u2014in pursuit for myself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a time of our lives where we had it all. We\u2019re going to be on the same page!\u201d And not too long after, he told me that he\u2019d decided he was an atheist, which I didn\u2019t expect.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Why did he bring the Bible home, then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> I think he was searching for himself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Had he seen the change in your life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> I\u2019m sure he did. I\u2019m sure he did because it was like a whole new world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I remember distinctly the day that Mary Ann and I got married\u2014one of the things that popped into my mind, as I was about to walk out and say, \u201cI do,\u201d\u2014for a lifetime, with this woman\u2014I thought: \u201cWhat if she changes? What if she\u2019s not the same woman ten years from now that I\u2019m marrying today\u2014that I\u2019m saying, \u2018I do,\u2019 to today?\u201d The truth is\u2014she has changed. She\u2019s not the same woman, and I\u2019m not the same man. God gives grace in the midst of all of that; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But by the same token, you guys had a kind of a change that neither of your husbands were counting on when they said, \u201cI do,\u201d to you. They were not planning to marry some Jesus freak; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And that\u2019s what they wound up with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s the biggest conflict that occurred? If you could summarize it\u2014and I know it\u2019s a bunch of small rubs in different direction\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut for you, Dineen, how did it impact him?\u2014your new-found faith and your marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> It\u2019s such a vast difference of worldviews because\u2014with his extreme and my extreme, in his perspective\u2014our very definition of life is complete opposites. So, it does make it very challenging to find common ground on that\u2014and agree to disagree, at times\u2014because, until one of us changes our worldview,\u2014and I can tell you it\u2019s not going to be me\u2014we\u2019re not going to agree. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou cannot agree when one believes there is a God and one does not\u2014when it\u2019s that clear cut. So, that\u2019s the biggest challenge because we work from such different perspectives. Everything we live through, look at, approach is from our different perspectives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, you do have points of agreement. There are things where you both agree that lying is wrong. You\u2019re not going to let the kids tell lies, so\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014so there is some commonality that you can lean into.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Right, of course.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But there are also things that are very precious to you\u2014that he just says: \u201cI don\u2019t agree. I\u2019m not there. That\u2019s fine for you, but not for me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The same kind of situation with you\u2014a clash of worldviews is the biggest issue, Lynn?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Yes, it was. In the early years, it was met with hostility. We had to come through that. I think, for most men and women who are married to a pre-believer\u2014we like to call them \u201cpre-believers.\u201d They go through this season\u2014I know I did\u2014of profound loneliness. You\u2019re like: \u201cWait a minute. I\u2019m married. How can I feel lonely?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt comes out of this place\u2014where you\u2019re growing in your faith, and things are happening to you, and that intimacy that you want to share: \u201cLook what God\u2019s doing in my life,\u201d\u2014and they do not want to hear it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s very common in a spiritually-mismatched marriage\u2014where we go through a season of loneliness. And then, other areas\u2014parenting, and the big one is going to church, and how\u2014when you\u2019re a spiritual-mismatched family\u2014you don\u2019t look like other church families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> For me, I so much wanted to look like everybody else; but then, I came to this place\u2014I think Dineen and I both did\u2014it\u2019s like\u2014we kind of like it now that we\u2019re not the typical family. We kind of sit on the outskirts\u2014we don\u2019t always fit in\u2014but we see the others that don\u2019t exactly fit in, either. I love that place now, but it was hard in the early years. I just wanted my husband to sit in church with me and read the Bible with me. I so much wanted that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, there are things that are surrendered. We go to Jesus, and He fills up those empty places.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The last time the two of you were here, we talked about the challenges you face in a spiritually-mismatched marriage\u2014the dynamics between a husband and a wife. You\u2019d written a book, <em>Winning Him Without Words<\/em>\u2014we kind of dove into that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve, now, written a second book that talks about the challenges you face\u2014as a believing mom with an unbelieving husband\u2014trying to mold and shape the direction for your children when you and your husband may not always be on exactly the same page about that direction. I know, like I said, there are things you do agree on. There are values or character qualities that you\u2019re all on the same page on, but there are also things that you think are pretty important\u2014I\u2019m thinking of things like reading your Bible and having devotions. Did you, Lynn, raise your kids\u2014you had a son. How old was Bradley when you came to faith?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> He was young. He was young.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Toddler?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Yes, yes; and he was raised\u2014I took him to church with me, as well. Then, I remarried in there. I still went to church, and I took my son and my daughter when she got older. Church attendance, for me, is honestly a mountain I would die on. It is the hill I would die on. I so firmly believe in the community. God created us to be in relationship with Him and with others, especially when I come from a home where Dad\u2019s not exactly modeling faith. I needed my kids to be around other adults and around other children so that they would learn what community is about, what God\u2019s kingdom is about, and to see how adults modeled prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, personally, one of the most powerful things that I ever did\u2014and it kind of was an accident\u2014was to allow my children to see me reading my Bible every morning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you live your faith in front of little eyes, and you\u2019re in love with Jesus, and you\u2019re talking about Him in just ordinary, everyday conversation, that\u2019s the most powerful witness you can give to your children. I have story after story how that happened with my children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m hearing two exhortations here, not merely one to those who are in spiritually-mismatched marriages, but also to single-parent moms.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Or single-parent dads\u2014to just not get isolated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Both situations demand that we be in a community of faith that encourages us to not lose heart in well-doing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was there any conflict with your husband about the idea of taking your kids to church or you going to church on your own? Did he have any qualms because he said, \u201cI\u2019m not going;\u201d right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> That\u2019s correct. No, I personally didn\u2019t experience conflict; but I do know that happens a lot in these kinds of marriages. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s where you have to have communication. You have\u2014I would say, \u201cI need to take my kids to church.\u201d My husband was okay with that; but I know other moms do struggle in that area\u2014where Dad says, \u201cNo.\u201d I think that\u2019s where it comes down to love and respect.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Right; right. With my husband and me, when I was taking our daughters to church, we had to talk about it. He said he was fine with me taking them as long as when they were old enough to make their own choice that I would let them. I agreed to that. I trusted God for that, and both my girls know Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So here\u2019s the key question: \u201cDid your husbands help get the kids ready to go to church?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> No. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No. I could answer that! They were sleeping in on Sunday morning. I know what I\u2019d be doing. Come on! I\u2019m not going to get up and help get the kids ready for church on Sunday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> You know, Dennis\u2014that is such a hard thing because you\u2019re struggling to get\u2014what if you have three or four little ones, and you\u2019ve got to get them dressed by yourself, and you\u2019re angry and you\u2019re upset?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s what I\u2019m getting at.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Oh, yes. But I want to tell every mother listening: \u201cIf you\u2019re in that place, right now, that you don\u2019t think it\u2019s worth it\u2014I will be the voice to tell you: \u2018It is worth it! Make every effort. Get up. Set things up on Saturday night. <em>Pray<\/em> for Sunday morning so that you\u2019re not angry and you don\u2019t have conflict. Get the clothes out for Sunday morning. Put a snack in the car\u2014everything that you do to get your kids into church so that they can be around other believers\u2014I absolutely believe God honors and rewards. It\u2019s valuable to your children.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I could see how you\u2019d have a pity party because you\u2019d be driving to church, like a single-parent mom\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lynn:<\/strong> Yes, and be mad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And when the kids look at you and say [yawning]: \u201cWhy do we have to go to church? Dad doesn\u2019t go to church. Why do we have to go to church?\u201d Did you ever hear that from your girls?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Oh, yes; and it is a battle. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat Lynn said is so true. We really\u2014it\u2019s a prayerful journey, through the week, to get ready for it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What did you tell them, though, when they said, \u201cWhy do we have to? Dad doesn\u2019t have to?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> When they were young, it was: \u201cBecause this is important. This is what we need to do. It\u2019s important for us. This is our opportunity to be in the house of God, to worship, to learn about Him. This is what life is most about, and it\u2019s important.\u201d As they became teenagers, that became a stronger battle. For my oldest\u2014she\u2019s very stubborn. For me, I knew, at one point, I was going to have to back off. She stopped going for a while. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was out of town one weekend. I got home\u2014she was about 16\u2014and she said, \u201cMom, I went to church this weekend with some friends.\u201d She said, \u201cDuring the service, I went up and recommitted my life to Christ because\u201d\u2014she said\u2014\u201cI just knew I had to do it.\u201d I was just ready to get on my knees, and cry, and praise God\u2014but I didn\u2019t want to freak my daughter out\u2014but inside, I was rejoicing because God\u2019s faithfulness is just so amazing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis same young woman is now 24. Last year, she married her husband, who is a very strong young man, who loves Jesus. This was one of her requirements for her future husband\u2014that he would know Jesus. For her\u2014to walk into a marriage, equally-yoked\u2014God was faithful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There is going to be a lot of life lived out in your family in the years ahead. Your husband is being surrounded by people of faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> Amen! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you don\u2019t know what valley your kids are going to have to walk through \/ what challenges they\u2019re going to face; but your husband is not going to be a casual observer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> No kidding!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s going to see life lived\u2014up close and personal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dineen:<\/strong> I think he is already because we have our family dinners together. A lot of the times, I\u2019ll ask Keith, my son-in-law, \u201cWill you say the blessing on the meal?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, my husband gets to see this new man in our family say a blessing over our food.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s fantastic. I got two action points out of today\u2019s broadcast: Number one\u2014if you\u2019re in one of these marriages \/ one of these families: Embrace your assignment. Scripture commands you: \u201cHang in there, and make your home holy. Make your kids holy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, if you\u2019re <em>not<\/em> in a spiritually-mismatched family, you just need to stop, right now, and give thanks that you\u2019re both marching in the same direction. Then, you need to both get on your knees and leverage what God has given you. Don\u2019t waste any of it because, I think, He\u2019s got an assignment for every person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And maybe part of the assignment, for couples who are in-sync spiritually, is to look around at people you know who aren\u2019t in that same situation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGet a copy of the books that Lynn and Dineen have written.
