Here\u2019s Robyn McKelvy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Robyn:<\/strong> If you are cheering your husband on, one of the things that he will recognize is that the only way that you can cheer him on is because of your relationship with Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> If you\u2019re telling your husband, \u201cI see Christ in you,\u201d you\u2019re going to see him maturing in the Lord. And that would give the wife what she needs to be able to continue to cheer; but it also will give a husband something that says, \u201cI need to continue to grow in Christ so that I can continue to lead this family.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. You know, I love one of the things I read in the book that we\u2019re going to be talking about today. Our guest says that a cheerleader, without the cheer, is like a soda without the bubbles. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No fizz. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> No fizz. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There\u2019s nothing there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s really good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Isn\u2019t that good? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s good. You know, here\u2019s the thing about husbands\u2014they can detect when the soda\u2019s flat. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, we know\u2014it\u2019s like we look at our wife\u2019s face. It is like, \u201cNo, there\u2019s no joy there.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cThere\u2019s no encouragement there.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was driving home yesterday. I called Mary Ann to say, \u201cI\u2019m on my way home.\u201d I could tell, over the phone, I was not headed home to a place of joy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A cozy spot; huh? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> A place of joy. Mary Ann had had her cell phone stolen, earlier in the day\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and not only the violation that happens when something like that is stolen; but now,\u2014you know, how attached you are to your phone; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> I need my phone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. Well, without her phone, there was no joy in Mudville. I mean, it was a dark night that I was heading home to. Now, I\u2019ll say this\u2014by the time I got there, Mary Ann had kind of recognized where her heart and attitude were and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ah, there you go. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014there was a little course correction; but there were\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to your point about husbands being able to detect when there\u2019s no fizz in the soda. I was heading into chilly winds. The good news is the front had moved through and the weather had turned by the time I got home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I want to speak with the woman who made the statement that: \u201cBeing a cheerleader to your husband is like putting the fizz\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In the soda. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cin the soda,\u201d because this woman, not only didn\u2019t have fizz, she had poison in the soda, especially concerning her attitude toward men. Robyn McKelvy joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Robyn, welcome back. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Thank you so much for having me again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Robyn and Ray have been married since 1988. I mean, you grew up in a home\u2014a daughter of a pastor who was pretty autocratic. You were poisoned. The soda didn\u2019t have any fizz toward men because you were poisoned\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014about men. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> And I was in one of those denominations that had the hierarchy of the bishops, and the elders, and the pastors. Just to see the way that these men were <em>so<\/em> exalted bothered me. They were\u2014really, as parishioners, we bowed down to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> And so, it scared the living day lights out of me because I knew some of the affairs these men had had. I knew some of the ways they treated their wives. So, all I saw was hypocrisy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I want to stop you here, too, because we\u2019ve already heard you endorse the biblical idea of submission this week. You are not saying, when you endorse that, that submission means affirming that kind of ungodly behavior\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Absolutely not! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014on the part of a husband or any man; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Absolutely not! And one of the things that is so neat\u2014about having a husband or a wife\u2014is that we are both commanded to speak the truth in love. So, when you see these attitudes or these areas\u2014where you\u2019re in a perfect position to say: \u201cThis is not right. This is not God-honoring.\u201d You have to say it in love because God loves us enough to tell us when something isn\u2019t right or God-honoring. He wants us to become this person, that\u2019s so redeemed, that we reflect the love of Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s how good He is. So, when our husbands have these areas, we need to make sure that we can get into a place or get to a place where we can say exactly what we need to say to him\u2014but that he would want to not bristle against it\u2014but he would want to say, \u201cI\u2019ve got to overcome this.\u201d And the way that he will overcome it is going to the Lord\u2014going to his personal Savior. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay, I want to\u2014I just kind of want to put this in context. So, here you go. Alright, you are a soda that has poison. You\u2019re not necessarily drawn toward wanting to submit to a man\u2014follow a man. You get married, and you start your marriage out in the midst of your internal battle toward men. What happened, early in your marriage, when Ray made a dumb choice or really did something that was foolish? What\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Well, it was on\u2014it was on\u2014and it wasn\u2019t pretty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And when you say, \u201cIt was on\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> The battle was on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What would you have done? I mean, take us into the living room. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What did you do?\u2014is what I want to know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Okay, let me just give you an example; okay? Now, I came from a family of fighters. The women fought\u2014my mom was all of five foot one, but she thought she could take my daddy on. When she\u2014are you laughing at that? She thought she could. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I just got a picture in my mind. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> So, I mean, my dad\u2019s six foot; you know? Let me just say this\u2014there were glasses flying and words flying. They never\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There was what? What did you say flying? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Glasses\u2014no, not this water bottle\u2014I\u2019m talking about glasses flying to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She threw it?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Oh man! You better duck if you are in the way because she was aiming for daddy. This is all my parents knew. It was a battle. I watched some of my sisters get married\u2014and the same glasses and plates are still flying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t want that, but there are ways that you can make glasses and plates fly without actually having them fly. When I say the battle is on, I could freeze Ray out or not respond to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was one time when I got in the car and tried to run him over to leave. I mean, just craziness! I\u2019m talking about we were the ones who were leading the youth\u2014we\u2019re leading Bible studies\u2014and this craziness is going on in our house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I remember\u2014and I\u2019m giving you this\u2014this is really my personal business, but I don\u2019t mind sharing it if God will be glorified. But I remember, one time, when I wanted to go to Kansas City because my mother was sick. I wanted him to get me there. Ray was like, \u201cWell, I would have had a ticket if I was you.\u201d So, I went into the bedroom and closed the door. Ray comes in and like, \u201cWe have to talk about this.\u201d I did not want to see Ray, at that time. I tried to push my way out of the bedroom by pushing him to let me out. Ray was saying, \u201cNo, we need to talk about this.\u201d I remember getting ready for battle\u2014you know\u2014because I didn\u2019t want to look at him. So, I started battling Ray\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014pushing at him\u2014just pushing at him. Ray chose to restrain me. It wasn\u2019t pretty; but I remember saying to him, \u201cLet me go. You\u2019re hurting me!\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cYou\u2019re hurting me!\u201d and I started crying. He immediately released me. He said, \u201cRobyn, we don\u2019t have to fight.\u201d I just wanted to get out of that room. So, I pushed him again because I\u2019m like: \u201cI\u2019ve seen this all my life! I\u2019ve seen my mom and dad have these battles.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> And even though it might not have been as many as I remember, it\u2019s what stuck with me. So, I thought this was the way to handle discrepancies in a husband\/wife relationship. So once again, Ray restrained me. As we were sitting on the floor, huffing and puffing, the phone rings. It\u2019s my sister calling, saying, \u201cMom\u2019s doing okay.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, I\u2019m going to jump ahead 25 years. You\u2019ve now been married a quarter century. You\u2019ve got ten kids. God\u2019s done a remarkable work over the years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tin your life, in your heart, in your marriage. Now, you\u2019re mentoring younger women and telling them, \u201cDon\u2019t do what I did.\u201d In fact, the book, <em>Say It Loud!<\/em>, with tips for being a cheerleader, is really the antithesis of what was going on in your bedroom that day; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Yes. And let me just say this\u2014God didn\u2019t do a remarkable work\u2014God did a miraculous work. That\u2019s how good God is. He refines us in such a way that we do come out looking like gold. I am the epitome of that because\u2014my attitude, my heart, everything about me\u2014 was like, \u201cThis man isn\u2019t going to tell me anything.\u201d As a result, what am I saying?\u2014\u201cGod can\u2019t tell me anything.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m picturing glasses flying in the air\u2014plates\u2014things being thrown, trying to do harm. Then, I\u2019m picturing a cheerleader, on the sidelines, with a megaphone\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014 with a smile on her face\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsaying, \u201cGo team, go! Go, team, go!\u201d You\u2019re\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> You did that well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. Well, I wouldn\u2019t have made the squad, trust me; but I\u2019d rather play the game; alright? But you switched from throwing verbal glasses and verbal plates to verbal encouragement\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and to planting positive statements of belief and encouragement\u2014to cheer Ray on in the battle he was facing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Yes, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What brought that change? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> But let me just say this\u2014I don\u2019t know if it was so much of a switch as a maturing in Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> And that\u2019s it. If you\u2014Isaiah says, \u201cIf you keep your\u201d\u2014\u201cI will give you perfect peace if your mind is stayed on me,\u201d because you trust. That\u2019s the thing\u2014it was all about my trust in Christ. God didn\u2019t give me Ray to fool me. He gave me Ray to mature me in Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we can see that, then, you have something to cheer about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alright; so, let me seat you in front of a young Robyn McKelvy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019re going to turn this into a NCA Cheerleader Camp. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you are one of the instructors. Sitting out in front of you are a bunch of young Robyn McKelvy\u2019s, who are going: \u201cI don\u2019t know that I want this job. I\u2019m not sure I can trust the team.\u201d You\u2019ve got to rally them. What kind of counsel are you going to give to them? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Let me just say this: They are sitting there because they absolutely do <em>want<\/em> the job. I mean, that\u2019s the thing. We <em>so desire<\/em> this relationship. We desire it because it\u2019s right, and it\u2019s godly, and God is glorified in it. So, we desire it; but all of the other stuff, that\u2019s playing out, is because of our experience that we\u2019ve had in the past. So, we desire it. I\u2019m sitting here, looking at these ladies. I know they are afraid and that they are fearful. They have all of this skepticism.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019m looking at them and saying: \u201cYou know what? God will keep you in perfect peace; but not only that, He does not give you a spirit of fear. So, if you take this relationship that you have, and you lay it before the throne of grace, then, God is going to make sure you have the grace and the help that you need in your time of need.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re saying that, if they try out for the squad, God\u2019s going to enable them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> As long as they remain and make sure that their relationship with the Lord doesn\u2019t get stagnant. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> It\u2019s so easy for us to\u2014especially, when those babies start coming\u2014especially, when you have a job\u2014it\u2019s easy for you to put those things first, but you have to fight for your personal relationship because there\u2019s where the hope comes. I can be Ray\u2019s cheerleader\u2014I can be his personal cheerleader because my hope isn\u2019t in Ray. My hope is in the Lord. The Lord can do exceedingly, abundantly above whatever I can even ask or imagine!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to see him do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Robyn, I don\u2019t share my soapbox with many people; but you just took over. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Well, let me tell you this\u2014I\u2019ve heard your soapbox. So, I think that I\u2019ve heard it. I was so encouraged by it that you need to give it to everybody who is listening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, as you were talking, I was thinking about the famous passage that has the \u201cs-word\u201d, the submission word, to wives. But the passage begins in First Peter, Chapter 3, verse 1, with one word. It\u2019s \u201cLikewise.\u201d So, your cheerleading is really all about calling Ray up\u2014calling Ray out\u2014encouraging him to follow Christ, as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. I think that\u2019s what we, as wives, are called to do. I mean, if we\u2019re not concerned about how our husbands look when it comes to who he is in Jesus Christ, we\u2019ve missed the mark. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think there are some wives, though, who are concerned that, if they affirm their husband too much\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\the will become complacent. He will think: \u201cI\u2019m meeting the standard. My wife says I\u2019m doing a great job. She\u2019s cheering me on. I guess I can kick back and relax. I don\u2019t have to work so hard.\u201d I think there are some wives who feel like, \u201cYes, I\u2019ll cheer him on; but he better give me something to cheer about before I cheer.\u201d So, which comes first\u2014the performance or the cheering that brings it about? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Can I just say this? That if you are cheering your husband on, one of the things that he will recognize is that the only way that you can do that\u2014when you see how, really, inadequate he is\u2014how imperfect he is\u2014the only way that he can see that you can cheer him on is because of your relationship with Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> So, that should spur him in his own relationship with Christ. If you\u2019re telling your husband\u2014one of these 30 days is saying, \u201cI see Christ in you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if your husband is spending time with the Lord\u2014is growing with the Lord\u2014you\u2019re going to see him maturing in the Lord. That would give the wife what she needs to be able to continue to cheer; but it also will give a husband something that says: \u201cI need to continue to grow in Christ. I need to continue to be what I need to be so that I can continue to lead this family.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s where life is found\u2014 right there. If a woman is a cheerleader, pointing her husband to that and to Jesus Christ, she\u2019s a winner. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Absolutely! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And ultimately, they\u2019re going to win the game. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> The family wins together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, my daughter\u2014my oldest daughter went to Texas A&amp;M University for college. If you go watch the Aggies play football on a Saturday, and they are at Kyle Field\u2014their home stadium\u2014there is a big sign across the top of Kyle Field. It says, \u201cKyle Field is the Home of the Twelfth Man.\u201d It says that because there are 11 players, who are out on the field\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut everybody understands, at Texas A&amp;M, that\u2014if the 11 guys are going to win, the 12<sup>th<\/sup> man\u2014the crowd\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> \u2014is the man in the stands. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the cheerleader\u2014they\u2019ve got to be there. There\u2019s a reason why teams play better at home\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014win more games on their home field, and on their home court, than they do when they\u2019re away. It has to do with something that goes on inside of every one of us when others are cheering us on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And those cadets stand\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014for the entire game. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, and they kiss if there is a touchdown scored, too. I\u2019ll just mention that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Not each other. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They kiss their girlfriends. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But what Robyn\u2019s calling wives to do is to stand on behalf of your man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> And just know this\u2014that your man wants his wife to be his greatest supporter. And so, he needs to hear from you. I don\u2019t care how many people are in the stands cheering him on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Like you said earlier, Dennis, it\u2019s only that one person that will really be honest with you. You know this is the truth that you\u2019re getting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s the wise woman who gets a copy of your devotional here to become a cheerleader. You want to make any promises, at the end of 30 days\u2014if they go through all 30 of these cheerleading tips, and look them up in the Scriptures, and see how they\u2019re to behave as a cheerleader\u2014do you want to make any bold\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> I can make some bold promises because I can say that God has used this book in my own personal life. I can make some promises that you will want to, not only cheer him on, but you will want to see women in your sons\u2019 lives that will want to cheer them on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Barbara and I wrote a book, a number of years ago, called <em>Building Your Mate\u2019s Self-Esteem<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And we compared our words to seeds. Here\u2019s Robyn McKelvy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Robyn:<\/strong> If you are cheering your husband on, one of the things that he will recognize is that the only way that you can cheer him on is because of your relationship with Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> If you\u2019re telling your husband, \u201cI see Christ in you,\u201d you\u2019re going to see him maturing in the Lord. And that would give the wife what she needs to be able to continue to cheer; but it also will give a husband something that says, \u201cI need to continue to grow in Christ so that I can continue to lead this family.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. You know, I love one of the things I read in the book that we\u2019re going to be talking about today. Our guest says that a cheerleader, without the cheer, is like a soda without the bubbles. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No fizz. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> No fizz. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There\u2019s nothing there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>1:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s really good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Isn\u2019t that good? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s good. You know, here\u2019s the thing about husbands\u2014they can detect when the soda\u2019s flat. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, we know\u2014it\u2019s like we look at our wife\u2019s face. It is like, \u201cNo, there\u2019s no joy there.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cThere\u2019s no encouragement there.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was driving home yesterday. I called Mary Ann to say, \u201cI\u2019m on my way home.\u201d I could tell, over the phone, I was not headed home to a place of joy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A cozy spot; huh? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> A place of joy. Mary Ann had had her cell phone stolen, earlier in the day\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and not only the violation that happens when something like that is stolen; but now,\u2014you know, how attached you are to your phone; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> I need my phone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. Well, without her phone, there was no joy in Mudville. I mean, it was a dark night that I was heading home to. Now, I\u2019ll say this\u2014by the time I got there, Mary Ann had kind of recognized where her heart and attitude were and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Ah, there you go. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014there was a little course correction; but there were\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014to your point about husbands being able to detect when there\u2019s no fizz in the soda. I was heading into chilly winds. The good news is the front had moved through and the weather had turned by the time I got home. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, I want to speak with the woman who made the statement that: \u201cBeing a cheerleader to your husband is like putting the fizz\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In the soda. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cin the soda,\u201d because this woman, not only didn\u2019t have fizz, she had poison in the soda, especially concerning her attitude toward men. Robyn McKelvy joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. I mean, you grew up in a home\u2014a daughter of a pastor who was pretty autocratic. You were poisoned. The soda didn\u2019t have any fizz toward men because you were poisoned\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014about men. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> And I was in one of those denominations that had the hierarchy of the bishops, and the elders, and the pastors. Just to see the way that these men were <em>so<\/em> exalted bothered me. They were\u2014really, as parishioners, we bowed down to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> And so, it scared the living day lights out of me because I knew some of the affairs these men had had. I knew some of the ways they treated their wives. So, all I saw was hypocrisy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I want to stop you here, too, because we\u2019ve already heard you endorse the biblical idea of submission this week. You are not saying, when you endorse that, that submission means affirming that kind of ungodly behavior\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Absolutely not! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014on the part of a husband or any man; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Absolutely not! And one of the things that is so neat\u2014about having a husband or a wife\u2014is that we are both commanded to speak the truth in love. So, when you see these attitudes or these areas\u2014where you\u2019re in a perfect position to say: \u201cThis is not right. This is not God-honoring.\u201d You have to say it in love because God loves us enough to tell us when something isn\u2019t right or God-honoring. He wants us to become this person, that\u2019s so redeemed, that we reflect the love of Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s how good He is. So, when our husbands have these areas, we need to make sure that we can get into a place or get to a place where we can say exactly what we need to say to him\u2014but that he would want to not bristle against it\u2014but he would want to say, \u201cI\u2019ve got to overcome this.\u201d And the way that he will overcome it is going to the Lord\u2014going to his personal Savior. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay, I want to\u2014I just kind of want to put this in context. So, here you go. Alright, you are a soda that has poison. You\u2019re not necessarily drawn toward wanting to submit to a man\u2014follow a man. You get married, and you start your marriage out in the midst of your internal battle toward men. What happened, early in your marriage, when Ray made a dumb choice or really did something that was foolish? What\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Well, it was on\u2014it was on\u2014and it wasn\u2019t pretty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And when you say, \u201cIt was on\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> The battle was on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What would you have done? I mean, take us into the living room. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What did you do?\u2014is what I want to know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Okay, let me just give you an example; okay? Now, I came from a family of fighters. The women fought\u2014my mom was all of five foot one, but she thought she could take my daddy on. When she\u2014are you laughing at that? She thought she could. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I just got a picture in my mind. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> So, I mean, my dad\u2019s six foot; you know? Let me just say this\u2014there were glasses flying and words flying. They never\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There was what? What did you say flying? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Glasses\u2014no, not this water bottle\u2014I\u2019m talking about glasses flying to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> She threw it?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Oh man! You better duck if you are in the way because she was aiming for daddy. This is all my parents knew. It was a battle. I watched some of my sisters get married\u2014and the same glasses and plates are still flying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t want that, but there are ways that you can make glasses and plates fly without actually having them fly. When I say the battle is on, I could freeze Ray out or not respond to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was one time when I got in the car and tried to run him over to leave. I mean, just craziness! I\u2019m talking about we were the ones who were leading the youth\u2014we\u2019re leading Bible studies\u2014and this craziness is going on in our house. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I remember\u2014and I\u2019m giving you this\u2014this is really my personal business, but I don\u2019t mind sharing it if God will be glorified. But I remember, one time, when I wanted to go to Kansas City because my mother was sick. I wanted him to get me there. Ray was like, \u201cWell, I would have had a ticket if I was you.\u201d So, I went into the bedroom and closed the door. Ray comes in and like, \u201cWe have to talk about this.\u201d I did not want to see Ray, at that time. I tried to push my way out of the bedroom by pushing him to let me out. Ray was saying, \u201cNo, we need to talk about this.\u201d I remember getting ready for battle\u2014you know\u2014because I didn\u2019t want to look at him. So, I started battling Ray\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2014pushing at him\u2014just pushing at him. Ray chose to restrain me. It wasn\u2019t pretty; but I remember saying to him, \u201cLet me go. You\u2019re hurting me!\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cYou\u2019re hurting me!\u201d and I started crying. He immediately released me. He said, \u201cRobyn, we don\u2019t have to fight.\u201d I just wanted to get out of that room. So, I pushed him again because I\u2019m like: \u201cI\u2019ve seen this all my life! I\u2019ve seen my mom and dad have these battles.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> And even though it might not have been as many as I remember, it\u2019s what stuck with me. So, I thought this was the way to handle discrepancies in a husband\/wife relationship. So once again, Ray restrained me. As we were sitting on the floor, huffing and puffing, the phone rings. It\u2019s my sister calling, saying, \u201cMom\u2019s doing okay.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, I\u2019m going to jump ahead 25 years. You\u2019ve now been married a quarter century. You\u2019ve got ten kids. God\u2019s done a remarkable work over the years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tin your life, in your heart, in your marriage. Now, you\u2019re mentoring younger women and telling them, \u201cDon\u2019t do what I did.\u201d In fact, the book, <em>Say It Loud!<\/em>, with tips for being a cheerleader, is really the antithesis of what was going on in your bedroom that day; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Yes. And let me just say this\u2014God didn\u2019t do a remarkable work\u2014God did a miraculous work. That\u2019s how good God is. He refines us in such a way that we do come out looking like gold. I am the epitome of that because\u2014my attitude, my heart, everything about me\u2014 was like, \u201cThis man isn\u2019t going to tell me anything.\u201d As a result, what am I saying?\u2014\u201cGod can\u2019t tell me anything.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m picturing glasses flying in the air\u2014plates\u2014things being thrown, trying to do harm. Then, I\u2019m picturing a cheerleader, on the sidelines, with a megaphone\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014 with a smile on her face\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsaying, \u201cGo team, go! Go, team, go!\u201d You\u2019re\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> You did that well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. Well, I wouldn\u2019t have made the squad, trust me; but I\u2019d rather play the game; alright? But you switched from throwing verbal glasses and verbal plates to verbal encouragement\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and to planting positive statements of belief and encouragement\u2014to cheer Ray on in the battle he was facing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Yes, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What brought that change? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> But let me just say this\u2014I don\u2019t know if it was so much of a switch as a maturing in Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> And that\u2019s it. If you\u2014Isaiah says, \u201cIf you keep your\u201d\u2014\u201cI will give you perfect peace if your mind is stayed on me,\u201d because you trust. That\u2019s the thing\u2014it was all about my trust in Christ. God didn\u2019t give me Ray to fool me. He gave me Ray to mature me in Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we can see that, then, you have something to cheer about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Alright; so, let me seat you in front of a young Robyn McKelvy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019re going to turn this into a NCA Cheerleader Camp. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you are one of the instructors. Sitting out in front of you are a bunch of young Robyn McKelvy\u2019s, who are going: \u201cI don\u2019t know that I want this job. I\u2019m not sure I can trust the team.\u201d You\u2019ve got to rally them. What kind of counsel are you going to give to them? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Let me just say this: They are sitting there because they absolutely do <em>want<\/em> the job. I mean, that\u2019s the thing. We <em>so desire<\/em> this relationship. We desire it because it\u2019s right, and it\u2019s godly, and God is glorified in it. So, we desire it; but all of the other stuff, that\u2019s playing out, is because of our experience that we\u2019ve had in the past. So, we desire it. I\u2019m sitting here, looking at these ladies. I know they are afraid and that they are fearful. They have all of this skepticism.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019m looking at them and saying: \u201cYou know what? God will keep you in perfect peace; but not only that, He does not give you a spirit of fear. So, if you take this relationship that you have, and you lay it before the throne of grace, then, God is going to make sure you have the grace and the help that you need in your time of need.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re saying that, if they try out for the squad, God\u2019s going to enable them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> As long as they remain and make sure that their relationship with the Lord doesn\u2019t get stagnant. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> It\u2019s so easy for us to\u2014especially, when those babies start coming\u2014especially, when you have a job\u2014it\u2019s easy for you to put those things first, but you have to fight for your personal relationship because there\u2019s where the hope comes. I can be Ray\u2019s cheerleader\u2014I can be his personal cheerleader because my hope isn\u2019t in Ray. My hope is in the Lord. The Lord can do exceedingly, abundantly above whatever I can even ask or imagine!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to see him do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Robyn, I don\u2019t share my soapbox with many people; but you just took over. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Well, let me tell you this\u2014I\u2019ve heard your soapbox. So, I think that I\u2019ve heard it. I was so encouraged by it that you need to give it to everybody who is listening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, as you were talking, I was thinking about the famous passage that has the \u201cs-word\u201d, the submission word, to wives. But the passage begins in First Peter, Chapter 3, verse 1, with one word. It\u2019s \u201cLikewise.\u201d So, your cheerleading is really all about calling Ray up\u2014calling Ray out\u2014encouraging him to follow Christ, as well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. I think that\u2019s what we, as wives, are called to do. I mean, if we\u2019re not concerned about how our husbands look when it comes to who he is in Jesus Christ, we\u2019ve missed the mark. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think there are some wives, though, who are concerned that, if they affirm their husband too much\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\the will become complacent. He will think: \u201cI\u2019m meeting the standard. My wife says I\u2019m doing a great job. She\u2019s cheering me on. I guess I can kick back and relax. I don\u2019t have to work so hard.\u201d I think there are some wives who feel like, \u201cYes, I\u2019ll cheer him on; but he better give me something to cheer about before I cheer.\u201d So, which comes first\u2014the performance or the cheering that brings it about? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Can I just say this? That if you are cheering your husband on, one of the things that he will recognize is that the only way that you can do that\u2014when you see how, really, inadequate he is\u2014how imperfect he is\u2014the only way that he can see that you can cheer him on is because of your relationship with Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> So, that should spur him in his own relationship with Christ. If you\u2019re telling your husband\u2014one of these 30 days is saying, \u201cI see Christ in you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if your husband is spending time with the Lord\u2014is growing with the Lord\u2014you\u2019re going to see him maturing in the Lord. That would give the wife what she needs to be able to continue to cheer; but it also will give a husband something that says: \u201cI need to continue to grow in Christ. I need to continue to be what I need to be so that I can continue to lead this family.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s where life is found\u2014 right there. If a woman is a cheerleader, pointing her husband to that and to Jesus Christ, she\u2019s a winner. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Absolutely! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And ultimately, they\u2019re going to win the game. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> The family wins together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, my daughter\u2014my oldest daughter went to Texas A&amp;M University for college. If you go watch the Aggies play football on a Saturday, and they are at Kyle Field\u2014their home stadium\u2014there is a big sign across the top of Kyle Field. It says, \u201cKyle Field is the Home of the Twelfth Man.\u201d It says that because there are 11 players, who are out on the field\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut everybody understands, at Texas A&amp;M, that\u2014if the 11 guys are going to win, the 12<sup>th<\/sup> man\u2014the crowd\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> \u2014is the man in the stands. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014the cheerleader\u2014they\u2019ve got to be there. There\u2019s a reason why teams play better at home\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014win more games on their home field, and on their home court, than they do when they\u2019re away. It has to do with something that goes on inside of every one of us when others are cheering us on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And those cadets stand\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014for the entire game. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, and they kiss if there is a touchdown scored, too. I\u2019ll just mention that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Not each other. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They kiss their girlfriends. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But what Robyn\u2019s calling wives to do is to stand on behalf of your man. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> And just know this\u2014that your man wants his wife to be his greatest supporter. And so, he needs to hear from you. I don\u2019t care how many people are in the stands cheering him on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Like you said earlier, Dennis, it\u2019s only that one person that will really be honest with you. You know this is the truth that you\u2019re getting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s the wise woman who gets a copy of your devotional here to become a cheerleader. You want to make any promises, at the end of 30 days\u2014if they go through all 30 of these cheerleading tips, and look them up in the Scriptures, and see how they\u2019re to behave as a cheerleader\u2014do you want to make any bold\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> I can make some bold promises because I can say that God has used this book in my own personal life. I can make some promises that you will want to, not only cheer him on, but you will want to see women in your sons\u2019 lives that will want to cheer them on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Barbara and I wrote a book, a number of years ago, called <em>Building Your Mate\u2019s Self-Esteem<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robyn:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And we compared our words to seeds.
