In the back of his mind was the thought\u2014maybe, he\u2019d meet a girl.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Marriage was not the first thing on my list\u2014and, I got to tell you, my parents had a lot of troubles before I left. It only got worse after I left. As a young person, I worked with a lot of guys who didn\u2019t necessarily go down the right path. They would, literally, make snide comments like, you know: \u201cIf you come back a virgin, we\u2019re going to punk you. We\u2019ll make fun of you.\u201d Marriage would not be the first thing on your list. Getting a girl would be the first thing on your list.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, January 20<sup>th<\/sup>. Lance Miller <em>did <\/em>meet a girl on that mission trip, and their relationship got started off headed in the wrong direction. We\u2019ll hear their story today. I sometimes forget that, out in the big world out there, not everybody thinks exactly the way I think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, when you work in a Christian organization, you can get in a bit of a bubble. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, you can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sometimes you need someone to step into your life with a big, gigantic pin, and pop it, [Laughter] and go, \u201cHere\u2019s the way it\u2019s happening around the country.\u201d I had this happen the other night at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway, where I arrived, and the young man who was taking care of us\u2014helping us get to our room\u2014was living with his girlfriend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He didn\u2019t think anything about it. I tried not to express anything because I don\u2019t know where he is spiritually; so why wouldn\u2019t he? But when you find out a couple, who go to church, are cohabiting\u2014living together\u2014you just kind of push back and you go, \u201cNow, help me understand what exactly took place.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou had an interview, Bob, that you did. I was away, in Colorado, at a speaking engagement. You had a chance to interview a couple who\u2014well, they were on a missions trip\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Don\u2019t give away their story! This is our friends, Lance Miller and his wife Jess, sharing their story about how God brought the two of them together and how he used the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> and <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> in their marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Jess, you\u2019re from the northwest; and, Lance, you\u2019re from the southeast. Where did the two of you come together?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance: <\/strong>Oh, man! [Laughter] I played drums at church. That\u2019s what has caused me to be just involved in church. It kept me there. I wasn\u2019t sure about God, but I was sure about drums. [Laughter] One time, at youth service, the guy didn\u2019t show up. They said: \u201cHey! Do you play? Well, you\u2019re playing tonight.\u201d Ever since then, I\u2019ve been at church because I had to play drums.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne day, they said: \u201cWe\u2019re not playing this week. There\u2019s a group coming in, and they are from Africa. They\u2019re going to tell us about what Africa is like.\u201d I said, \u201cThat\u2019s great.\u201d We came the next Sunday, and there they were\u2014talked to them and hung out. They said: \u201cHey! Do you want to go to Africa?\u201d I said: \u201cSure! That sounds great! I\u2019ve never been out of my own house, let alone the country.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI signed their card. I didn\u2019t think anything of it. They said: \u201cWe\u2019ll see you later. Someone will call you in a few weeks.\u201d I said, \u201cThat\u2019s great.\u201d Sure enough, they called.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said: \u201cYou know, have you ever been out of your house? Have you ever done anything like that?\u201d I said, \u201cNo.\u201d They said, \u201cWe\u2019ll get back to you.\u201d They called me back again and said: \u201cLook\u2014you can\u2019t go to Africa because you\u2019re not quite old enough and mature enough. There\u2019s a lot of culture shock there; but we could put you on a national team\u2014a ministry team\u2014that would travel around the United States, and play in different churches, and kind of do evangelism.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis was in July. They said: \u201cWe start in August. So, you had better raise a pretty hefty amount of money,\u201d\u2014for it\u2019s a whole-year sign-up trip\u2014\u201cand meet us in Minnesota on August 15<sup>th<\/sup>.\u201d I got the support of the church and did this thing. It really hits you when you sign up for a year commitment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> \u2014to do something you\u2019ve never done before\u2014when you get to Minnesota and you\u2019re looking at the terminal. It says: \u201cWelcome to Minnesota.\u201d You go, \u201cThis is real.\u201d That was where the hub of everyone meets\u2014that you\u2019ve never met before, and you\u2019re going to spend a year with them in a van.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How old were you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> I was 19. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, so you\u2019re 19. You\u2019re out of school\u2014a year. You figure, \u201cWhy not spend a year doing this, see the country, and play drums?\u201d\u2014you like playing drums. You get there, and you meet Jess?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Your walk with God was kind of arm\u2019s length? You kind of thought: \u201cMaybe, He was out there,\u201d or what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> I had grown up\u2014and we always went to church. You knew God was there, from an early age; but we made a shift when we moved to Florida from Chicago\u2014where I originally grew up. My parents could not afford private school anymore. So, we went to public school. That\u2019s definitely\u2014the peer group has great power in shifting your thinking, sometimes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt started to get away from me. You start questioning, \u201cWhy would God let something like this happen?\u201d My dad got sick\u2014he had cancer. We found out he had cancer shortly after we moved from Chicago. So, you start to question things a little bit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBefore that\u2014I should preface this\u2014the only job I\u2019d ever had, my whole life, is when I was 12 or 13; and we moved to Florida. We moved down the street from a guy who had\u2014I loved lawn mowers and working with my hands. My dad let me take stuff, in the garage, apart that should never probably have been taken apart. He never got onto me about that, though. He said: \u201cThat\u2019s cool! Let me teach you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat translated into me cutting the grass for this guy, down the street, which turned into me cutting the grass at his store. Now, he started picking me up after school so we would go work on appliances at his shop. I\u2019ve been doing that since I was 14\u2014for 12 years now. It\u2019s the only job I\u2019ve ever had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> It\u2019s quite a blessing. But, to go on this trip, I also had to convince him\u2014more than my parents\u2014to let me go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> To take a year off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> To take a year off and go see the world. He said, \u201cThe world\u2019s here.\u201d [Laughter] I said\u2014I also had friends who were getting into drugs. Man, I just had a lot of questions! This group from Africa was so centered on what you need to be doing to serve God: \u201cIt\u2019s out there. You can change your life that way.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI\u2019ve got to get out of here.\u201d I signed up\u2014convinced my boss. I didn\u2019t even tell any of my friends. I just left! I got on that plane to Minnesota.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, I\u2019m curious, Jess. Did you notice the drummer first, or did the drummer notice you first?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> It was me. He was one of the first things I knew because we are both introverts. I walked in, and there were almost 100 other people arriving to be trained for their teams. We had a lot of teams back then\u2014plus all of the staff and everything. There were almost 140 people there. I was quickly shutting down. I knew I needed to not do that. So, I was looking for: \u201cWho\u2019s going to be my anchor?\u201d when I walked in there. He was also quiet. He was smart. He looked good. It was just like, \u201cOkay!\u201d And, he was on my team; so, \u201cI could follow this one for a little while.\u201d That was how that started.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And how long into this year-long adventure before the two of you thought, \u201cMaybe, there\u2019s more here than just a friendship\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Only a couple of months.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> We had a cool breakthrough. We\u2019re both kind of techies, a little bit. We couldn\u2019t figure out how to get this Nintendo 64<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> to show up on this TV for these youth kids to play. We troubleshooted it, and figured it out, and high-fived each other. I said, \u201cThis girl is not like other girls!\u201d [Laughter] \u2014I said it in my head.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow!! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> It doesn\u2019t take much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve never had a story like that on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em> [Laughter] This is a first! Were you thinking the same thing about him, at the same time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> I made up my mind much sooner. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were already\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Yes, I was pretty clear from the start.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, how long before you started sharing your interest with one another?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> It was Christmas that year. We were going to go on break. We weren\u2019t going to see everybody for two weeks. I was afraid that he was going to get away from me. So, I went and told him. We hadn\u2019t spoken beyond fixing things together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cLook, I don\u2019t know what to do or say; but I really, really like you. We need to talk some more.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes? So what did you think when she came and said that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> I did not know what to think, mostly, because, at the beginning of your training\u2014on our team there were six people\u2014three girls and three guys. They explained this at the beginning: \u201cDon\u2019t date! [Laughter] You can\u2019t do that. It\u2019s going to mess up the atmosphere. You\u2019re going to be a separate team from your main team, and it\u2019s going to screw things up.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance: <\/strong>Man, I had everything in my body and my head screaming, \u201cThis is not the way we should be going!\u201d But I thought\u2014was kind of flattered, at the same time. So, you\u2019re thinking, \u201cThis could be pretty cool.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. So you come back after Christmas\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve had this talk; and now, you\u2019re back on the team. You\u2019re not supposed to be dating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, did you keep it hidden; or did you just keep your distance? What did you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Yes! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You kept your distance and kept it hidden! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Yes; it kind of just happened like that. When you\u2019re on a team like that and you\u2019re traveling in a van, you don\u2019t get to leave. So, we just did life together; we did ministry together. We were at different churches every couple of days. I mean, it was a new experience waiting around the bend\u2014new tech things to figure out. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, Jess, at the end of that one-year period, were you guys, at this point, pretty serious with one another?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Is that when you moved to Florida?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Yes, actually\u2014between Easter, which was in April that year, and May-ish\u2014I had a very difficult conversation: \u201cRight now, we\u2019re going to go home; and we\u2019re never going to see each other again. I don\u2019t want to do that,\u201d but I didn\u2019t want to push too hard\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause he was the one who was going to have to invite me because of his dad being sick at home. It was going to have to go that way. So, I just threw that out there. He did invite me to move down to Florida.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> I bought a new ticket from Minnesota to Florida and went with what I had been living with for the year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were your mom and dad cool with all of this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> At the time, they didn\u2019t have much to say. It seemed like they were okay since, apparently, my mom\u2019s circle had really pressured her: \u201cThis is wrong! You can\u2019t be letting your daughter...\u201d I mean, she really was fighting everybody; but she did a really, really good job of trusting that I was going to have to learn things on my own.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to ask you: \u201cGrowing up in the home and the family that you grew up in, I\u2019m presuming that you were thinking about life\u2014that you would meet somebody, fall in love, and get married someday?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Actually, I remember, probably midway through high school, I remember having a very tough period of time where I was hoping for that; but I was convinced it was never going to happen for me. I was feeling like nobody would ever notice me. It was just the pressures of\u2014you\u2019re so plugged into your church. I was in fast-pitch\u2014like workaholic\u2014but around kid things. On top of that, not being supermodel thin and being able to catch the attention\u2014there were a lot of self-esteem issues. I didn\u2019t think I was ever going to be able to have that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you started having a guy paying attention to you and noticing you, did that revitalize thoughts that, \u201cMaybe, one day, we\u2019ll get married\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> I certainly had that hope for him. I had never dated\u2014I had never. I had been waiting. If it was going to happen, it was only going to be the one person. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Got it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> So, when I found him, I said, \u201cIt\u2019s either this or nothing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Like, \u201cThis is it for me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Lance, what had been your thinking about\u2014did you want to get married someday?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Marriage was not the first thing on my list. I got to tell you, as a young person, I worked in that store. I worked with a lot of guys who didn\u2019t necessarily go down the right path. They would, literally, make snide comments like: \u201cIf you come back a virgin, we\u2019re going to punk you. We\u2019ll make fun of you.\u201d They already did; but the peer pressure that you experience, just being a guy and never having been with someone. Marriage would not be the first thing on your list. Getting a girl would be the first thing on your list.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The culture you were in was a conquest kind of a culture. Marriage\u2014maybe, at some point\u2014but it\u2019s all about conquest with girls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Absolutely! The order in which things happen has been switched.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. Were you thinking, as you\u2019re off on this one-year ministry experiment, \u201cI better make sure that I don\u2019t come back a virgin\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Actually, yes. It was sort of one of the things at the top of my\u2014I would come back on a break and talk to the guys: \u201cHey, have you done anything yet? How are the girls?\u201d It\u2019s just so sad to hear that, thinking back; but that\u2019s just how it is. That\u2019s the way the culture had me thinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You knew that the ministry team you were with thought you should be staying away from one another. The guys back at the shop are saying, \u201cYou should be going after the girls.\u201d You were paying attention more to what the guys, back at the shop, were thinking than what the ministry folks were thinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> We actually had teammates, who saw what was happening\u2014even though we tried to keep it hidden\u2014who pulled us aside and said, \u201cStop!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So how long into\u2014and I know we\u2019re getting into personal stuff here\u2014but how long into that post-Christmas\u2014before it\u2019s all over\u2014are you starting to have sex?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Yes, during the summer\u2014it was June\/July.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay. It is right as things are coming to an end?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Right. We hadn\u2019t\u2014we were kind of making plans, but it wasn\u2019t cemented.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What were you thinking and feeling when, all of a sudden, the relationship is starting to move in this direction?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> It was: \u201cI have the undivided attention of someone. I never thought I would.\u201d There was partly that fear: \u201cNo one else will ever look at me again. So, I need to take advantage.\u201d And there was the fear that\u2014there was Satan convincing me that it was okay because <em>I<\/em> had decided there wouldn\u2019t be anybody else\u2014so, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter. You\u2019re only supposed to have one; and he\u2019s the one\u2014so there we go!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were you having any guilt\u2014any qualms of conscience\u2014about the fact that you were having sex with somebody on a ministry team? I mean, now, you can go back to the guys in the shop and say, \u201cHey, I scored!\u201d but\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Right; at the cost of what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. Was there guilt?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> You know what? When you have sex for the first time, you are thinking about a whole bunch of different things\u2014and what the guys are whispering in your ear. It\u2019s like there was no room for guilt, at the beginning, until we started to see the consequences of what we were doing. That\u2019s when it starts to hit you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Sin is only fun for a period of time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> It only has those fun benefits; and then, you start to reap the consequences.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019ve been listening to the first part of a conversation we had, not long ago, with Jess and Lance Miller\u2014a young couple who, as we heard today, met on a missions trip and became sexually-active as a part of the trip. Ultimately, wound up, as we will hear this week\u2014they wound up living together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I hear from folks all of the time\u2014there are a lot of people, going to church, who are living together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You can\u2019t be in this culture today and, even occasionally, watch what is taking place\u2014on TV in prime time, or in the movies, or in music, or on the web\u2014and be unaffected. You\u2019ve got to believe there are, literally, millions of young people today who don\u2019t think anything about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, it\u2019s expected. It\u2019s not a matter of it being a moral choice; it\u2019s a matter of it being a human right. We shouldn\u2019t be surprised. We shouldn\u2019t be surprised that this kind of thing is taking place. First of all, everybody is broken. Everybody has sinned and fallen short of how God made them to be. But, secondly, you just have to admit: \u201cThis is a powerful culture that we\u2019re in today. It is brainwashing a lot of our young people.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> As we will hear this week, Lance and Jess wound up at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaway. They were not married. They weren\u2019t thinking about marriage; or, at least, he hadn\u2019t started thinking about it yet. She had it in the back of her mind that marriage was, hopefully, around the corner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And, Bob, this is the cool thing about the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>. We don\u2019t come on as some group of pious, holy Joe\u2019s, who have life wired perfectly, pointing our fingers at people who aren\u2019t doing what the Bible says. We try to take people, as they come to the conference\u2014meet them where they are\u2014graciously invite them into an experience where, ultimately, they\u2019re going to hear the truth from the Scriptures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Kind of like Jesus did with the woman at the well?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Exactly! I love it that the story here is this couple didn\u2019t feel condemned, but they heard the truth. It only got worse after I left. As a young person, I worked with a lot of guys who didn\u2019t necessarily go down the right path. They would, literally, make snide comments like, you know: \u201cIf you come back a virgin, we\u2019re going to punk you. We\u2019ll make fun of you.\u201d Marriage would not be the first thing on your list. Getting a girl would be the first thing on your list.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, January 20<sup>th<\/sup>. Lance Miller <em>did <\/em>meet a girl on that mission trip, and their relationship got started off headed in the wrong direction. We\u2019ll hear their story today. I sometimes forget that, out in the big world out there, not everybody thinks exactly the way I think. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, when you work in a Christian organization, you can get in a bit of a bubble. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, you can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sometimes you need someone to step into your life with a big, gigantic pin, and pop it, [Laughter] and go, \u201cHere\u2019s the way it\u2019s happening around the country.\u201d I had this happen the other night at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage getaway, where I arrived, and the young man who was taking care of us\u2014helping us get to our room\u2014was living with his girlfriend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He didn\u2019t think anything about it. I tried not to express anything because I don\u2019t know where he is spiritually; so why wouldn\u2019t he? But when you find out a couple, who go to church, are cohabiting\u2014living together\u2014you just kind of push back and you go, \u201cNow, help me understand what exactly took place.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou had an interview, Bob, that you did. I was away, in Colorado, at a speaking engagement. You had a chance to interview a couple who\u2014well, they were on a missions trip\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Don\u2019t give away their story! It\u2019s a great story!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It really is an interesting story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We got the whole staff together so that they could sit in and hear the story as I conducted the interview with Jess and Lance Miller. This is our friends, Lance Miller and his wife Jess, sharing their story about how God brought the two of them together and how he used the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> and <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em> in their marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Jess, you\u2019re from the northwest; and, Lance, you\u2019re from the southeast. Where did the two of you come together?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance: <\/strong>Oh, man! [Laughter] I played drums at church. That\u2019s what has caused me to be just involved in church. It kept me there. I wasn\u2019t sure about God, but I was sure about drums. [Laughter] One time, at youth service, the guy didn\u2019t show up. They said: \u201cHey! Do you play? Well, you\u2019re playing tonight.\u201d Ever since then, I\u2019ve been at church because I had to play drums.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne day, they said: \u201cWe\u2019re not playing this week. There\u2019s a group coming in, and they are from Africa. They\u2019re going to tell us about what Africa is like.\u201d I said, \u201cThat\u2019s great.\u201d We came the next Sunday, and there they were\u2014talked to them and hung out. They said: \u201cHey! Do you want to go to Africa?\u201d I said: \u201cSure! That sounds great! I\u2019ve never been out of my own house, let alone the country.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI signed their card. I didn\u2019t think anything of it. They said: \u201cWe\u2019ll see you later. Someone will call you in a few weeks.\u201d I said, \u201cThat\u2019s great.\u201d Sure enough, they called.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said: \u201cYou know, have you ever been out of your house? Have you ever done anything like that?\u201d I said, \u201cNo.\u201d They said, \u201cWe\u2019ll get back to you.\u201d They called me back again and said: \u201cLook\u2014you can\u2019t go to Africa because you\u2019re not quite old enough and mature enough. There\u2019s a lot of culture shock there; but we could put you on a national team\u2014a ministry team\u2014that would travel around the United States, and play in different churches, and kind of do evangelism.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis was in July. They said: \u201cWe start in August. So, you had better raise a pretty hefty amount of money,\u201d\u2014for it\u2019s a whole-year sign-up trip\u2014\u201cand meet us in Minnesota on August 15<sup>th<\/sup>.\u201d I got the support of the church and did this thing. It really hits you when you sign up for a year commitment\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> \u2014to do something you\u2019ve never done before\u2014when you get to Minnesota and you\u2019re looking at the terminal. It says: \u201cWelcome to Minnesota.\u201d You go, \u201cThis is real.\u201d That was where the hub of everyone meets\u2014that you\u2019ve never met before, and you\u2019re going to spend a year with them in a van.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How old were you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> I was 19. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, so you\u2019re 19. You\u2019re out of school\u2014a year. You figure, \u201cWhy not spend a year doing this, see the country, and play drums?\u201d\u2014you like playing drums. You get there, and you meet Jess?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Your walk with God was kind of arm\u2019s length? You kind of thought: \u201cMaybe, He was out there,\u201d or what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> I had grown up\u2014and we always went to church. You knew God was there, from an early age; but we made a shift when we moved to Florida from Chicago\u2014where I originally grew up. My parents could not afford private school anymore. So, we went to public school. That\u2019s definitely\u2014the peer group has great power in shifting your thinking, sometimes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt started to get away from me. You start questioning, \u201cWhy would God let something like this happen?\u201d My dad got sick\u2014he had cancer. We found out he had cancer shortly after we moved from Chicago. So, you start to question things a little bit. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBefore that\u2014I should preface this\u2014the only job I\u2019d ever had, my whole life, is when I was 12 or 13; and we moved to Florida. We moved down the street from a guy who had\u2014I loved lawn mowers and working with my hands. My dad let me take stuff, in the garage, apart that should never probably have been taken apart. He never got onto me about that, though. He said: \u201cThat\u2019s cool! Let me teach you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat translated into me cutting the grass for this guy, down the street, which turned into me cutting the grass at his store. Now, he started picking me up after school so we would go work on appliances at his shop. I\u2019ve been doing that since I was 14\u2014for 12 years now. It\u2019s the only job I\u2019ve ever had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> It\u2019s quite a blessing. But, to go on this trip, I also had to convince him\u2014more than my parents\u2014to let me go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> To take a year off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> To take a year off and go see the world. He said, \u201cThe world\u2019s here.\u201d [Laughter] I said\u2014I also had friends who were getting into drugs. Man, I just had a lot of questions! This group from Africa was so centered on what you need to be doing to serve God: \u201cIt\u2019s out there. You can change your life that way.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI\u2019ve got to get out of here.\u201d I signed up\u2014convinced my boss. I didn\u2019t even tell any of my friends. I just left! I got on that plane to Minnesota.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, I\u2019m curious, Jess. Did you notice the drummer first, or did the drummer notice you first?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> It was me. He was one of the first things I knew because we are both introverts. I walked in, and there were almost 100 other people arriving to be trained for their teams. We had a lot of teams back then\u2014plus all of the staff and everything. There were almost 140 people there. I was quickly shutting down. I knew I needed to not do that. So, I was looking for: \u201cWho\u2019s going to be my anchor?\u201d when I walked in there. He was also quiet. He was smart. He looked good. It was just like, \u201cOkay!\u201d And, he was on my team; so, \u201cI could follow this one for a little while.\u201d That was how that started.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And how long into this year-long adventure before the two of you thought, \u201cMaybe, there\u2019s more here than just a friendship\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Only a couple of months.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> We had a cool breakthrough. We\u2019re both kind of techies, a little bit. We couldn\u2019t figure out how to get this Nintendo 64<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> to show up on this TV for these youth kids to play. We troubleshooted it, and figured it out, and high-fived each other. I said, \u201cThis girl is not like other girls!\u201d [Laughter] \u2014I said it in my head.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow!! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> It doesn\u2019t take much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> We\u2019ve never had a story like that on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em> [Laughter] This is a first! Were you thinking the same thing about him, at the same time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> I made up my mind much sooner. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You were already\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Yes, I was pretty clear from the start.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, how long before you started sharing your interest with one another?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> It was Christmas that year. We were going to go on break. We weren\u2019t going to see everybody for two weeks. I was afraid that he was going to get away from me. So, I went and told him. We hadn\u2019t spoken beyond fixing things together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said: \u201cLook, I don\u2019t know what to do or say; but I really, really like you. We need to talk some more.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes? So what did you think when she came and said that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> I did not know what to think, mostly, because, at the beginning of your training\u2014on our team there were six people\u2014three girls and three guys. They explained this at the beginning: \u201cDon\u2019t date! [Laughter] You can\u2019t do that. It\u2019s going to mess up the atmosphere. You\u2019re going to be a separate team from your main team, and it\u2019s going to screw things up.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance: <\/strong>Man, I had everything in my body and my head screaming, \u201cThis is not the way we should be going!\u201d But I thought\u2014was kind of flattered, at the same time. So, you\u2019re thinking, \u201cThis could be pretty cool.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. So you come back after Christmas\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve had this talk; and now, you\u2019re back on the team. You\u2019re not supposed to be dating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, did you keep it hidden; or did you just keep your distance? What did you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Yes! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You kept your distance and kept it hidden! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Yes; it kind of just happened like that. When you\u2019re on a team like that and you\u2019re traveling in a van, you don\u2019t get to leave. So, we just did life together; we did ministry together. We were at different churches every couple of days. I mean, it was a new experience waiting around the bend\u2014new tech things to figure out. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, Jess, at the end of that one-year period, were you guys, at this point, pretty serious with one another?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Is that when you moved to Florida?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Yes, actually\u2014between Easter, which was in April that year, and May-ish\u2014I had a very difficult conversation: \u201cRight now, we\u2019re going to go home; and we\u2019re never going to see each other again. I don\u2019t want to do that,\u201d but I didn\u2019t want to push too hard\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause he was the one who was going to have to invite me because of his dad being sick at home. It was going to have to go that way. So, I just threw that out there. He did invite me to move down to Florida.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> I bought a new ticket from Minnesota to Florida and went with what I had been living with for the year. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were your mom and dad cool with all of this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> At the time, they didn\u2019t have much to say. It seemed like they were okay since, apparently, my mom\u2019s circle had really pressured her: \u201cThis is wrong! You can\u2019t be letting your daughter...\u201d I mean, she really was fighting everybody; but she did a really, really good job of trusting that I was going to have to learn things on my own.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to ask you: \u201cGrowing up in the home and the family that you grew up in, I\u2019m presuming that you were thinking about life\u2014that you would meet somebody, fall in love, and get married someday?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Actually, I remember, probably midway through high school, I remember having a very tough period of time where I was hoping for that; but I was convinced it was never going to happen for me. I was feeling like nobody would ever notice me. It was just the pressures of\u2014you\u2019re so plugged into your church. I was in fast-pitch\u2014like workaholic\u2014but around kid things. On top of that, not being supermodel thin and being able to catch the attention\u2014there were a lot of self-esteem issues. I didn\u2019t think I was ever going to be able to have that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> When you started having a guy paying attention to you and noticing you, did that revitalize thoughts that, \u201cMaybe, one day, we\u2019ll get married\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> I certainly had that hope for him. I had never dated\u2014I had never. I had been waiting. If it was going to happen, it was only going to be the one person. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Got it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> So, when I found him, I said, \u201cIt\u2019s either this or nothing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Like, \u201cThis is it for me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Lance, what had been your thinking about\u2014did you want to get married someday?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Marriage was not the first thing on my list. I got to tell you, as a young person, I worked in that store. I worked with a lot of guys who didn\u2019t necessarily go down the right path. They would, literally, make snide comments like: \u201cIf you come back a virgin, we\u2019re going to punk you. We\u2019ll make fun of you.\u201d They already did; but the peer pressure that you experience, just being a guy and never having been with someone. Marriage would not be the first thing on your list. Getting a girl would be the first thing on your list.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The culture you were in was a conquest kind of a culture. Marriage\u2014maybe, at some point\u2014but it\u2019s all about conquest with girls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Absolutely! The order in which things happen has been switched.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. Were you thinking, as you\u2019re off on this one-year ministry experiment, \u201cI better make sure that I don\u2019t come back a virgin\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Actually, yes. It was sort of one of the things at the top of my\u2014I would come back on a break and talk to the guys: \u201cHey, have you done anything yet? How are the girls?\u201d It\u2019s just so sad to hear that, thinking back; but that\u2019s just how it is. That\u2019s the way the culture had me thinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You knew that the ministry team you were with thought you should be staying away from one another. The guys back at the shop are saying, \u201cYou should be going after the girls.\u201d You were paying attention more to what the guys, back at the shop, were thinking than what the ministry folks were thinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> We actually had teammates, who saw what was happening\u2014even though we tried to keep it hidden\u2014who pulled us aside and said, \u201cStop!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So how long into\u2014and I know we\u2019re getting into personal stuff here\u2014but how long into that post-Christmas\u2014before it\u2019s all over\u2014are you starting to have sex?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Yes, during the summer\u2014it was June\/July.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay. It is right as things are coming to an end?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> Right. We hadn\u2019t\u2014we were kind of making plans, but it wasn\u2019t cemented.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What were you thinking and feeling when, all of a sudden, the relationship is starting to move in this direction?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jess:<\/strong> It was: \u201cI have the undivided attention of someone. I never thought I would.\u201d There was partly that fear: \u201cNo one else will ever look at me again. So, I need to take advantage.\u201d And there was the fear that\u2014there was Satan convincing me that it was okay because <em>I<\/em> had decided there wouldn\u2019t be anybody else\u2014so, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter. You\u2019re only supposed to have one; and he\u2019s the one\u2014so there we go!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were you having any guilt\u2014any qualms of conscience\u2014about the fact that you were having sex with somebody on a ministry team? I mean, now, you can go back to the guys in the shop and say, \u201cHey, I scored!\u201d but\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Right; at the cost of what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. Was there guilt?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> You know what? When you have sex for the first time, you are thinking about a whole bunch of different things\u2014and what the guys are whispering in your ear. It\u2019s like there was no room for guilt, at the beginning, until we started to see the consequences of what we were doing. That\u2019s when it starts to hit you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> Sin is only fun for a period of time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lance:<\/strong> It only has those fun benefits; and then, you start to reap the consequences.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019ve been listening to the first part of a conversation we had, not long ago, with Jess and Lance Miller\u2014a young couple who, as we heard today, met on a missions trip and became sexually-active as a part of the trip. Ultimately, wound up, as we will hear this week\u2014they wound up living together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I hear from folks all of the time\u2014there are a lot of people, going to church, who are living together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You can\u2019t be in this culture today and, even occasionally, watch what is taking place\u2014on TV in prime time, or in the movies, or in music, or on the web\u2014and be unaffected. You\u2019ve got to believe there are, literally, millions of young people today who don\u2019t think anything about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I mean, it\u2019s expected. It\u2019s not a matter of it being a moral choice; it\u2019s a matter of it being a human right. We shouldn\u2019t be surprised. We shouldn\u2019t be surprised that this kind of thing is taking place. First of all, everybody is broken. Everybody has sinned and fallen short of how God made them to be. But, secondly, you just have to admit: \u201cThis is a powerful culture that we\u2019re in today. It is brainwashing a lot of our young people.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> As we will hear this week, Lance and Jess wound up at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaway. They were not married. They weren\u2019t thinking about marriage; or, at least, he hadn\u2019t started thinking about it yet. She had it in the back of her mind that marriage was, hopefully, around the corner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And, Bob, this is the cool thing about the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>. We don\u2019t come on as some group of pious, holy Joe\u2019s, who have life wired perfectly, pointing our fingers at people who aren\u2019t doing what the Bible says. We try to take people, as they come to the conference\u2014meet them where they are\u2014graciously invite them into an experience where, ultimately, they\u2019re going to hear the truth from the Scriptures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Kind of like Jesus did with the woman at the well?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Exactly! I love it that the story here is this couple didn\u2019t feel condemned, but they heard the truth.
