Thanks for joining us. I\u2019m a little concerned about whether I\u2019ll have any opportunity to say anything else the rest of today\u2019s\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, I\u2019m glad you admitted that\u2014off the bat, Bob\u2014because I was concerned I wasn\u2019t going to be able to say anything. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Oh, no! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019ve already admitted that our guest here is not low on energy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Or passion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No! Todd Wagner joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Todd, welcome to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> It is a privilege to be here. I\u2019ve been blessed by FamilyLife ministries for a long time\u2014by you two gentlemen\u2014and thanks for having me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Glad to have you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Todd is the founding pastor of Watermark Community Church in Dallas. He and his wife have been wed since 1991. They have three boys and three daughters. Todd is passionate about marriage, family, and raising the next generation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re so passionate about it\u2014you sat down, one day\u2014and you decided you were going to kind of carve out what it meant to raise a son into a man and raise a daughter into a young lady. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, what was the context for this list that you put together? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Well, here is where\u2014really, where it came from. I sat down one day; and I thought: \u201cOkay, what am I doing? I\u2019ve been given the stewardship of these six kids.\u201d Children are a gift from the Lord; alright? \u201cBlessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so, are the children of one\u2019s youth.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019m not a professional archer or anything; but I do know that arrows can be a source of great blessing or they can be used for destruction. If these are my arrows, and I\u2019m His warrior, I better do what I\u2019m supposed to do with them. I better be skilled in the way that I launch them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was reading, one time, in First Corinthians 16. There is that little verse there\u2014verse 13 and 14\u2014where it says, \u201cBe on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Act like men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBe strong.\u201d \u201cLet everything you do be done in love\u201d is how it finishes. I thought to myself, \u201cOkay, what does a man act like?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you really want to create silence, in a room full of men, you ask them to define manhood. A lot of guys don\u2019t know how to do that. I think our friend, Robert Lewis, has done a great job of pointing out that problem. Most men don\u2019t know what it is to be a man, and here I am supposed to raise them. So, I needed just a working definition of how to create a godly man. I thought: \u201cI\u2019ve got three girls. I better do it for what it means act like a godly woman. I can\u2019t just keep saying, \u2018Proverbs 31,\u2019 my whole life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> \u201cI better give them some handles\u201d\u2014right?\u2014\u201cto climb that wall that is the Proverbs 31 wall.\u201d So, I just sat down, and\u2014just to make it easy for me to memorize\u2014I came up with five S\u2019s for what it is to be a godly man and five S\u2019s for what it means to be a godly gal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, this was kind of personal. You weren\u2019t putting a message together to preach to church. This was you, as a daddy, figuring, \u201cI better have my blueprints put together.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s all it was. It was nothing I was trying to create for anybody else. What I would say, even to folks who listen today: \u201cIf there is something here useful, be encouraged by it. But if anything, just come up with something better. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStand on the shoulders of what I\u2019ve done.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s really the point here. Barbara and I sat down, and we wrote down a list of 25 things we wanted to teach our kids. Now, it wasn\u2019t around defining manhood or womanhood. It was just character qualities that we wanted to embed in their souls and their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you need to know that that list of 25, then, became 37; then, it became 42. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Then, it was over 50; okay? I have people come up; and they say, \u201cWould you share that list with me?\u201d And I go, \u201cUh-uh.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And the reason I don\u2019t is\u2014I say, \u201cGo back to the source\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cthe source material, which is the Bible, and figure out what you want to pass on to your son \/ your daughter, and send a message to the next generation.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly what we hope every mom and dad does because, again, they are warriors. They have unique arrows. They are different than mine. All six of mine are different; but at the end of the day, we do know that God expects us to be good stewards of them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe goal here is not that they would learn what you came up with \/ what I came up with\u2014the goal is that they would just go, \u201cI\u2019m given a stewardship to craft this gift of God into what He wants them to be.\u201d So, yes, these are just pegs. Robert Lewis has done a good job with what he has done to try and create a modern-day knight. Dennis, your stuff\u2014there is lots of stuff out there\u2014but I will say this, \u201cPeople are, sometimes, frozen because they don\u2019t think they are going to have the perfect thing to do.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I would tell you\u2014and I love this expression\u2014\u201cFolks that changed the world simply start, and they start simply.\u201d But too many people\u2014they don\u2019t do anything! They never simply start because they\u2019re not sure they are going to do it exactly right. So, we\u2019ve <em>got <\/em>to get busy and give it a shot. You are right, Dennis, the Book is already there. I mean, just pay a little attention and be intentional. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You started with a presupposition that there was going to be a different list for boys than there was for girls. There are some people today who would say, \u201cWait, wait, wait, Todd, shouldn\u2019t we just raise our kids to be godly kids\u2014why a different list?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Well, yes, I would just say: \u201cLet\u2019s just go back to the Designer. He seemed to make us different; okay?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, a lot of times, in our effort to really talk about the dignity of woman\u2014which we have to do\u2014women are equal\u2014they are not the same. God does not want young women to grow up to be godly husbands, and He doesn\u2019t want men to grow up to be godly wives. So, there is a role\u2014 not a rank\u2014 that men have. There is a role\u2014not a rank\u2014that women have. So, I need to make sure that I prepare them to be and encourage them to be what God created them to be. You are right. It always amazes me that we are trying to make something that is different the same, or we confuse sameness with equality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Again, go back to the source material, Genesis, Chapter 1. It says: \u201cMale and female created He them. In the image of God He created them.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> If God went out of His way to define man and woman as being different to represent His image, then, shouldn\u2019t we, as parents, celebrate what it means to be a young lady \/ celebrate what it means to be a man, and teach them how to relate to one another? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, you chose a true biblical term for the first one for young men. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here is why you say that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, no, no! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014because the term you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, no, no! Just tell the audience\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014true biblical term. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Some of this is trying to make Dennis look good; isn\u2019t it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s what it\u2019s designed for. [Laughter] What\u2019s the term you chose for the first one? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> For boys; yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Step up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh! Where have we heard that before; huh? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t know that, Bob! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, you\u2014there is a book called <em>Stepping Up<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes, there is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There is a video series called <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup>. So, you guys are thinking on the same terms here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Well, and again, it\u2019s because we\u2019ve got the same source material. Let that be an encouragement to men that are out there; okay? I\u2019ve learned so much that I\u2019ve forgotten where I\u2019ve learned it. And so, the old statement\u2014right?\u2014is: \u201cCreativity is forgetting where you heard it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> So, there is nothing in here\u2014you\u2019re going to see a lot that is borrowed. You\u2019re going to see some stuff that\u2014again, if you are familiar with <em>Raising a Modern-Day Knight<\/em>\u2014some of this same terminology Robert used. So, it wasn\u2019t like I was some creative genius. I was just, again, intentional\u2014going to the source material, going to other men that have gone to the source material, taking something that worked for me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand by the way, not that made sense to me\u2014something, that was biblical, that worked for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> So, I didn\u2019t start from scratch. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, what does it mean for a young man to become a man, in terms of stepping up? How would you define that? Just coach us, as fathers, in how to impart this to our sons or our grandsons. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Well, so glad you asked that because, again, this is the problem. The reason we don\u2019t have a lot of godly young men is because we don\u2019t have a lot of dads who are stepping up and being the dads that God wants them to be. I just define stepping up this way\u2014lead, initiate, be a man of action, assume it\u2019s your job \/ your moment, hate apathy, reject passivity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, with a son, I just said: \u201cHey, you just can\u2019t assume somebody else is going to do something. God created you to do.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You take responsibility for what\u2019s there. If somebody\u2019s not taking responsibility, a man steps in and says, \u201cI\u2019ll do it;\u201d right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> And be a man of action is the\u2014this is what we\u2019re talking about, Dennis. I\u2019m going to keep going back to this. Dads, who are listening \/ moms, who are listening\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo something.\u201d Great men believe that what\u2019s impossible for men is possible for God. God wants me to overcome. I mean, that is\u2014and He wants me to step up and do what I can as I follow His way, and His will, and trust the outcome to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I just don\u2019t want my sons to be passive. I don\u2019t want them to be individuals that make excuses for why they can\u2019t be something that they were created to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Before we came in the studio, I just received a letter from a boy. I have no idea how old he is\u2014has to be 13 or 14 years old, just looking from the handwriting and kind of the grammar that he was using. But he had just been through the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series with his dad and a bunch of other dads and their sons. He was reflecting on what he had learned\u2014not just from the video\u2014but the time of sharing, where the men kind of circle up. They begin to interact, as men, around what they\u2019ve seen, and what they\u2019ve heard, and how they process it, as men or as younger men. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just a cute letter to receive from\u2014here is a boy who is emerging into manhood. I just wrote him a note back; and I said: \u201cYou just need to know. You did one of the finest things you can do, as a young man, by going through that material with your daddy because you need to have him rub off on you.\u201d That\u2019s what the Book of Proverbs is all about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> That\u2019s what it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s a daddy who was giving wise sayings to his son. He said, \u201cListen, my son, for I give you sound teachings,\u201d\u2014sound advice \/ sound counsel. And that\u2019s what you are saying, here, in calling dads to step up and call their sons to step up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and it leads to the second thing because, not only do you call young men to step up, but you call them to speak out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. Part of the step up is just personal responsibility\u2014 personal opportunity and accountability\u2014but then, I say, \u201cListen, part of the reason you\u2019ve got to step up and be the man that God wants you to be is that God wants men to lead in their culture.\u201d We were talking, earlier, as a group of guys\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tabout how the church, itself, is called to be salt and light. When the church is not salty, and does not give off a lot of light, we shouldn\u2019t be surprised to see that there is decay and darkness in our land. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the ways we lead is with words. So, the second one, after step up, is to speak out\u2014which is to just acknowledge that silence in the midst of sin is a sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Illustrate that with something that one of your sons did as they were growing up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Or something that they saw you do. How did they see you model that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes, so, what I try and do a lot of times\u2014right now, there is a little organization at their high school. It\u2019s called Iron Sharpens Iron\u2014that a young man started because he really wanted there to be a group of men in high school that began to commune together\u2014to encourage each other. Well, this thing has drifted over the years. It\u2019s become just another organization. So, we were just talking yesterday, in fact, about how, right now, Iron Sharpens Iron is not exactly made up of men that are sharpening each other at all. So, it\u2019s more a little bit like cottonwood sharpening cottonwood. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat group is made up of guys whose lives are not exhibiting what it was that this organization was initially set up to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRather than bemoan that fact, I said, \u201cThis is your opportunity to love your friends.\u201d One of the verses that\u2014you know, with each of these, I gave them verses to memorize that would lead out on that. I just was reminding them: \u201cWhen we speak out faithfully about what\u2019s going on, what\u2019s God\u2019s Word say? \u2018Better is open rebuke than love that is concealed. Faithful are the wounds of a friend. Deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That takes courage\u2014especially, high school kids going to stand up and say, \u201cI\u2019m going to confront you about what\u2019s going on in your life.\u201d That\u2019s bold for anybody!. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes, absolutely. So, we\u2014so, I try to even teach them how to do it. You know, one of the things they learn, underneath speaking out, is how you do it\u2014is to do it with gentleness\u2014first,\u00a0 looking to yourself, \u201clest you too be tempted\u201d\u2014out of Galatians. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> So, I try. I teach them to speak out and how to speak out\u2014winsomely, seasoned with salt, as it were\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> \u2014like it says in Colossians. So, speaking out is in terms of loving a friend and helping that friend see that our lives are consistent with what we want; but speaking out also has to do with speaking up for the rights of the needy and the unfortunate\u2014that somebody, whether the kids are being bullied\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a situation where some kids were hurt in a small group that my son was in, where he did not step up. He wasn\u2019t, maybe, part of the bullying; but because he didn\u2019t step up and stop it\u2014he sat passively. He didn\u2019t speak out and say, \u201cHey, guys, we all think that\u2019s funny; but we wouldn\u2019t want somebody to be teasing us that way, right now.\u201d And because he didn\u2019t do that\u2014he didn\u2019t step up \/ he didn\u2019t speak out\u2014there was a lack of leadership\u2014and there was some real pain and hurt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You also talk about young men standing strong. When you read that passage that you quoted, earlier, from First Corinthians 16, where it talks about acting like men\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes, sir. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014there is a challenge in there to be strong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> You bet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let all that you do be done in love. How do you train a boy to stand strong in this culture? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Well, I think what you can do is give them a vision for greatness. One of the things that I want my son to know is that: \u201cListen, if you are going to lead, leadership is going to cost you. And we follow somebody who stepped up for our sin. We follow somebody who spoke out against corruption and dead religion.\u201d When He was criticized, challenged, and attacked, He stood strong. He understood He lived for a greater reward\u2014something more than Himself. He understood why He was here. He didn\u2019t look to be celebrated right here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I just tell them to stand strong. \u201cDon\u2019t give in when you are challenged, attacked, or criticized.\u201d But if you step up and you speak out in our culture\u2014you two gentlemen have been at the forefront of this. You know that people are going to say that you\u2019re bigoted, you\u2019re intolerant, and you\u2019re unloving. If you\u2019re somebody that doesn\u2019t want those labels even cast at you, then, you\u2019ll go, \u201cOkay, I learn to be silent now.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> So, I just say, \u201cYou just need to understand people are not going to always praise you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbecause you say and do the right thing.\u201d I try and tell them: \u201cWhen you are criticized\u2014if it\u2019s true, then, you need to change. You need to seek forgiveness \/ make amends; but if it\u2019s not true, then, just brace yourself and do your job.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve been spending a lot of time in the Book of Philippians, over the last couple of months. In Philippians 1:27, Paul is talking to the church about what it looks like to walk or to live in a manner worthy of the gospel. The first thing he says is: \u201cStand firm.\u201d Standing firm is a foundation for what living a life worthy of the gospel is going to look like. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says that in Chapter 1; and then, he unpacks it. And you get to Chapter 4, verse 1; and he says, \u201cSo, finally, my brothers, stand firm.\u201d This whole issue of being anchored in truth \/ anchored in character\u2014this is something that we didn\u2019t just make this up. This is something that is bedrock to our faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> You know, I\u2019ll say this to you guys. One of the things you ask kids what they want to be when they grow up; and they don\u2019t ever give you: \u201cI want to be polite.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI want to be a good citizen.\u201d \u201cI want to be a faithful person who never misses a Sunday.\u201d Of course, they don\u2019t say that; right? They want to be great. They have super heroes\u2014firemen, rescuers, Navy SEALs. What I try to share with them is that: \u201cLook, even the heroes that you follow\u2014these are men that they don\u2019t ever back down. You don\u2019t see Batman backing down. You don\u2019t see Superman backing down. And you certainly don\u2019t see Jesus backing down. Godly men never back down.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a great verse in Jeremiah. It\u2019s one of the ones they memorize, underneath this, where it says that God is talking to Jeremiah. He says, \u201cI have made you a fortified city, a pillar of iron, a wall of bronze.\u201d I love sports. I\u2019ve been around sports and involved with sports. We talk about the steel curtain. We talk about great linebackers. You give them a vision for what men are\u2014on some little fleeting arena like sports. Imagine being that in all of life?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The last two items that you\u2019ve got on your list are the same for both young men and young women; aren\u2019t they? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Unpack both of those for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s because, no matter, what you do\u2014as a young man or young woman\u2014you better make sure that you realize you\u2019ve always got something to learn\u2014no matter how much you step up, no matter how much you speak up, no matter how much you stand strong. We\u2019ve got to stay humble and be vigilant against pride. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really try and define humility for them\u2014which is not\u2014not believing you are gifted\u2014but it\u2019s like a definition I read a long time ago. I think maybe C.S. Lewis is the one who came up with this one\u2014but: \u201cDon\u2019t think less of yourself. Think of yourself less.\u201d So, just remember that people are going to sharpen you the rest of your life\u2014that anything you do that\u2019s great is not done because you are essentially great but because of Christ working in you. You\u2019re a cracked pot\u2014an earthen vessel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>So, yes, \u201cStay humble\u201d is number four. Number five is: \u201cServe the King\u201d\u2014to live for that greater reward. Live for His kingdom, and His glory, and His righteousness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I like it that you are attacking the issue of pride because this is where guys\u2014and I know girls \/ young ladies can get caught off guard by their ego, as well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut it seems that men struggle more with the pride issue than women do. How did you instruct your sons to deal with the pride issue as they became men? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Well, you know, Dennis, it is a constant issue that I hopefully will model before them. I mean, the legacy we leave, ultimately, is the life that we live before our kids. So, I\u2019m just always trying to, myself, clothe myself in humility. I talk to them specifically about how their dad doesn\u2019t live in isolation. No matter how great you are, God wants you to live in community with other men that speak strongly into your life. My kids know\u2014my kids know the men that speaking into me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you this. Someone asked me one time, \u201cWhat\u2019s the best thing that you do to lead your wife?\u201d I said, \u201cI tell her who she can go to when I\u2019m less of man than I want to be.\u201d I tell our kids, \u201cWhenever there is an issue that they think I\u2019m not parenting well \/ leading well, that I want to be a great dad and I need help.\u201d So, they know the men to call and say: \u201cHey, would you sit down with my dad and me as we work through this? I think he\u2019s being too hard on me in this,\u201d or, \u201cI think this is unreasonable.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI say, \u201cListen, I want to be coached, as a dad.\u201d I try and model that for them\u2014and just show them that: \u201cListen, I need others to help me. I\u2019ve got to get the log out of my own eye.\u201d So, I seek their forgiveness when I make a mistake. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it really fits with this last one you talked about, just a few moments ago, \u201cServe the King.\u201d Our surrender to the King, ultimately, deals with our arrogance \/ our pride and helps us rightly evaluate ourselves as the men or women that God has made us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tReally, my challenge to the listener, at this point, is to take Todd\u2019s list and steal one of them\u2014okay?\u2014and begin to craft your own list of five, ten\u2014maybe, it is more; alright? But where are you going to start? Just pick one of these and say: \u201cYou know what? When they come home from school today or as we spend the weekend together, we\u2019re going to talk about \u201cStepping Up\u201d,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tor \u201cSpeaking Out\u201d, or \u201cStanding Strong\u201d, or \u201cStaying Humble\u201d, or \u201cServing the King\u201d. Pick one of those five. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> That\u2019s a great thing to do, Dennis. They can\u2014we\u2019ll even put this on your website. Folks can go there and download this. There are verses under each one. What is great about these are they are intentionally short so that, on the way to school, you can talk about it\u2014rehearse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI will laugh about this with them. Sometimes, it can be very mundane. My kids know that there are five of them. So, we\u2019ve kind of\u2014\u201cStep Up\u201d is one. \u201cSpeak Out\u201d is two. So, sometimes, I will just look at them, across the room; and I\u2019ll just hold up, most often, four fingers: \u201cStay Humble.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, this can be even silly like some of\u2014my, now, fourth-grader was having success at a particular game\u2014was standing up and just doing some kind of dance over everybody. I just kind of looked at him, with four fingers, and held them up. He kind of just melted back into his chair. [Laughter] So: \u201cStay humble over there, or I\u2019ll get involved.\u201d Anyhow, they are intentionally short so they can be rehearsed and reviewed continually. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And get back in the Book where you get these instructions\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and find your marching orders from the Scriptures because, if there has ever been a time when parents needed to be in this Book and be hearing from God personally as they raise kids, it\u2019s today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You talk about the dad who had taken his son through the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series. I\u2019m thinking about what\u2019s coming up a little more than three weeks from now. On the day before the Super Bowl<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, we\u2019ve got guys gathering in churches, all across the country\u2014hundreds of locations\u2014where there is going to be a <em>Stepping Up<\/em> one-day video event for men. We\u2019re calling it Super Saturday. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuys are gathering with other guys to go through four sessions\u2014people like Dennis Rainey, and Crawford Loritts, and Robert Lewis, and Matt Chandler, Voddie Baucham, other guys who are coaching us on how we can step up and be the men God\u2019s called us to be. I\u2019m a little concerned about whether I\u2019ll have any opportunity to say anything else the rest of today\u2019s\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, I\u2019m glad you admitted that\u2014off the bat, Bob\u2014because I was concerned I wasn\u2019t going to be able to say anything. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Oh, no! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019ve already admitted that our guest here is not low on energy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Or passion. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No! Todd Wagner joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Todd, welcome to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> It is a privilege to be here. I\u2019ve been blessed by FamilyLife ministries for a long time\u2014by you two gentlemen\u2014and thanks for having me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Glad to have you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Todd is the founding pastor of Watermark Community Church in Dallas. He and his wife have been wed since 1991. They have three boys and three daughters. Todd is passionate about marriage, family, and raising the next generation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re so passionate about it\u2014you sat down, one day\u2014and you decided you were going to kind of carve out what it meant to raise a son into a man and raise a daughter into a young lady. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, what was the context for this list that you put together? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Well, here is where\u2014really, where it came from. I sat down one day; and I thought: \u201cOkay, what am I doing? I\u2019ve been given the stewardship of these six kids.\u201d Children are a gift from the Lord; alright? \u201cBlessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so, are the children of one\u2019s youth.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019m not a professional archer or anything; but I do know that arrows can be a source of great blessing or they can be used for destruction. If these are my arrows, and I\u2019m His warrior, I better do what I\u2019m supposed to do with them. I better be skilled in the way that I launch them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was reading, one time, in First Corinthians 16. There is that little verse there\u2014verse 13 and 14\u2014where it says, \u201cBe on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Act like men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBe strong.\u201d \u201cLet everything you do be done in love\u201d is how it finishes. I thought to myself, \u201cOkay, what does a man act like?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you really want to create silence, in a room full of men, you ask them to define manhood. A lot of guys don\u2019t know how to do that. I think our friend, Robert Lewis, has done a great job of pointing out that problem. Most men don\u2019t know what it is to be a man, and here I am supposed to raise them. So, I needed just a working definition of how to create a godly man. I thought: \u201cI\u2019ve got three girls. I better do it for what it means act like a godly woman. I can\u2019t just keep saying, \u2018Proverbs 31,\u2019 my whole life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> \u201cI better give them some handles\u201d\u2014right?\u2014\u201cto climb that wall that is the Proverbs 31 wall.\u201d So, I just sat down, and\u2014just to make it easy for me to memorize\u2014I came up with five S\u2019s for what it is to be a godly man and five S\u2019s for what it means to be a godly gal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, this was kind of personal. You weren\u2019t putting a message together to preach to church. This was you, as a daddy, figuring, \u201cI better have my blueprints put together.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s all it was. It was nothing I was trying to create for anybody else. What I would say, even to folks who listen today: \u201cIf there is something here useful, be encouraged by it. But if anything, just come up with something better. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStand on the shoulders of what I\u2019ve done.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s really the point here. Barbara and I sat down, and we wrote down a list of 25 things we wanted to teach our kids. Now, it wasn\u2019t around defining manhood or womanhood. It was just character qualities that we wanted to embed in their souls and their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you need to know that that list of 25, then, became 37; then, it became 42. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Then, it was over 50; okay? I have people come up; and they say, \u201cWould you share that list with me?\u201d And I go, \u201cUh-uh.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And the reason I don\u2019t is\u2014I say, \u201cGo back to the source\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201cthe source material, which is the Bible, and figure out what you want to pass on to your son \/ your daughter, and send a message to the next generation.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly what we hope every mom and dad does because, again, they are warriors. They have unique arrows. They are different than mine. All six of mine are different; but at the end of the day, we do know that God expects us to be good stewards of them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe goal here is not that they would learn what you came up with \/ what I came up with\u2014the goal is that they would just go, \u201cI\u2019m given a stewardship to craft this gift of God into what He wants them to be.\u201d So, yes, these are just pegs. Robert Lewis has done a good job with what he has done to try and create a modern-day knight. Dennis, your stuff\u2014there is lots of stuff out there\u2014but I will say this, \u201cPeople are, sometimes, frozen because they don\u2019t think they are going to have the perfect thing to do.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I would tell you\u2014and I love this expression\u2014\u201cFolks that changed the world simply start, and they start simply.\u201d But too many people\u2014they don\u2019t do anything! They never simply start because they\u2019re not sure they are going to do it exactly right. So, we\u2019ve <em>got <\/em>to get busy and give it a shot. You are right, Dennis, the Book is already there. I mean, just pay a little attention and be intentional. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You started with a presupposition that there was going to be a different list for boys than there was for girls. There are some people today who would say, \u201cWait, wait, wait, Todd, shouldn\u2019t we just raise our kids to be godly kids\u2014why a different list?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Well, yes, I would just say: \u201cLet\u2019s just go back to the Designer. He seemed to make us different; okay?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, a lot of times, in our effort to really talk about the dignity of woman\u2014which we have to do\u2014women are equal\u2014they are not the same. God does not want young women to grow up to be godly husbands, and He doesn\u2019t want men to grow up to be godly wives. So, there is a role\u2014 not a rank\u2014 that men have. There is a role\u2014not a rank\u2014that women have. So, I need to make sure that I prepare them to be and encourage them to be what God created them to be. You are right. It always amazes me that we are trying to make something that is different the same, or we confuse sameness with equality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Again, go back to the source material, Genesis, Chapter 1. It says: \u201cMale and female created He them. In the image of God He created them.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> If God went out of His way to define man and woman as being different to represent His image, then, shouldn\u2019t we, as parents, celebrate what it means to be a young lady \/ celebrate what it means to be a man, and teach them how to relate to one another? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Absolutely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Now, you chose a true biblical term for the first one for young men. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Here is why you say that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, no, no! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014because the term you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, no, no! Just tell the audience\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014true biblical term. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Some of this is trying to make Dennis look good; isn\u2019t it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s what it\u2019s designed for. [Laughter] What\u2019s the term you chose for the first one? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> For boys; yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Step up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh! Where have we heard that before; huh? [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t know that, Bob! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, you\u2014there is a book called <em>Stepping Up<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes, there is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There is a video series called <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup>. So, you guys are thinking on the same terms here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Well, and again, it\u2019s because we\u2019ve got the same source material. Let that be an encouragement to men that are out there; okay? I\u2019ve learned so much that I\u2019ve forgotten where I\u2019ve learned it. And so, the old statement\u2014right?\u2014is: \u201cCreativity is forgetting where you heard it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> So, there is nothing in here\u2014you\u2019re going to see a lot that is borrowed. You\u2019re going to see some stuff that\u2014again, if you are familiar with <em>Raising a Modern-Day Knight<\/em>\u2014some of this same terminology Robert used. So, it wasn\u2019t like I was some creative genius. I was just, again, intentional\u2014going to the source material, going to other men that have gone to the source material, taking something that worked for me\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand by the way, not that made sense to me\u2014something, that was biblical, that worked for me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> So, I didn\u2019t start from scratch. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, what does it mean for a young man to become a man, in terms of stepping up? How would you define that? Just coach us, as fathers, in how to impart this to our sons or our grandsons. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Well, so glad you asked that because, again, this is the problem. The reason we don\u2019t have a lot of godly young men is because we don\u2019t have a lot of dads who are stepping up and being the dads that God wants them to be. I just define stepping up this way\u2014lead, initiate, be a man of action, assume it\u2019s your job \/ your moment, hate apathy, reject passivity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, with a son, I just said: \u201cHey, you just can\u2019t assume somebody else is going to do something. God created you to do.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You take responsibility for what\u2019s there. If somebody\u2019s not taking responsibility, a man steps in and says, \u201cI\u2019ll do it;\u201d right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> And be a man of action is the\u2014this is what we\u2019re talking about, Dennis. I\u2019m going to keep going back to this. Dads, who are listening \/ moms, who are listening\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo something.\u201d Great men believe that what\u2019s impossible for men is possible for God. God wants me to overcome. I mean, that is\u2014and He wants me to step up and do what I can as I follow His way, and His will, and trust the outcome to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I just don\u2019t want my sons to be passive. I don\u2019t want them to be individuals that make excuses for why they can\u2019t be something that they were created to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Before we came in the studio, I just received a letter from a boy. I have no idea how old he is\u2014has to be 13 or 14 years old, just looking from the handwriting and kind of the grammar that he was using. But he had just been through the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series with his dad and a bunch of other dads and their sons. He was reflecting on what he had learned\u2014not just from the video\u2014but the time of sharing, where the men kind of circle up. They begin to interact, as men, around what they\u2019ve seen, and what they\u2019ve heard, and how they process it, as men or as younger men. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just a cute letter to receive from\u2014here is a boy who is emerging into manhood. I just wrote him a note back; and I said: \u201cYou just need to know. You did one of the finest things you can do, as a young man, by going through that material with your daddy because you need to have him rub off on you.\u201d That\u2019s what the Book of Proverbs is all about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> That\u2019s what it is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s a daddy who was giving wise sayings to his son. He said, \u201cListen, my son, for I give you sound teachings,\u201d\u2014sound advice \/ sound counsel. And that\u2019s what you are saying, here, in calling dads to step up and call their sons to step up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and it leads to the second thing because, not only do you call young men to step up, but you call them to speak out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. Part of the step up is just personal responsibility\u2014 personal opportunity and accountability\u2014but then, I say, \u201cListen, part of the reason you\u2019ve got to step up and be the man that God wants you to be is that God wants men to lead in their culture.\u201d We were talking, earlier, as a group of guys\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tabout how the church, itself, is called to be salt and light. When the church is not salty, and does not give off a lot of light, we shouldn\u2019t be surprised to see that there is decay and darkness in our land. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the ways we lead is with words. So, the second one, after step up, is to speak out\u2014which is to just acknowledge that silence in the midst of sin is a sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Illustrate that with something that one of your sons did as they were growing up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Or something that they saw you do. How did they see you model that? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes, so, what I try and do a lot of times\u2014right now, there is a little organization at their high school. It\u2019s called Iron Sharpens Iron\u2014that a young man started because he really wanted there to be a group of men in high school that began to commune together\u2014to encourage each other. Well, this thing has drifted over the years. It\u2019s become just another organization. So, we were just talking yesterday, in fact, about how, right now, Iron Sharpens Iron is not exactly made up of men that are sharpening each other at all. So, it\u2019s more a little bit like cottonwood sharpening cottonwood. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat group is made up of guys whose lives are not exhibiting what it was that this organization was initially set up to do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRather than bemoan that fact, I said, \u201cThis is your opportunity to love your friends.\u201d One of the verses that\u2014you know, with each of these, I gave them verses to memorize that would lead out on that. I just was reminding them: \u201cWhen we speak out faithfully about what\u2019s going on, what\u2019s God\u2019s Word say? \u2018Better is open rebuke than love that is concealed. Faithful are the wounds of a friend. Deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That takes courage\u2014especially, high school kids going to stand up and say, \u201cI\u2019m going to confront you about what\u2019s going on in your life.\u201d That\u2019s bold for anybody!. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes, absolutely. So, we\u2014so, I try to even teach them how to do it. You know, one of the things they learn, underneath speaking out, is how you do it\u2014is to do it with gentleness\u2014first,\u00a0 looking to yourself, \u201clest you too be tempted\u201d\u2014out of Galatians. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right; right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> So, I try. I teach them to speak out and how to speak out\u2014winsomely, seasoned with salt, as it were\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> \u2014like it says in Colossians. So, speaking out is in terms of loving a friend and helping that friend see that our lives are consistent with what we want; but speaking out also has to do with speaking up for the rights of the needy and the unfortunate\u2014that somebody, whether the kids are being bullied\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a situation where some kids were hurt in a small group that my son was in, where he did not step up. He wasn\u2019t, maybe, part of the bullying; but because he didn\u2019t step up and stop it\u2014he sat passively. He didn\u2019t speak out and say, \u201cHey, guys, we all think that\u2019s funny; but we wouldn\u2019t want somebody to be teasing us that way, right now.\u201d And because he didn\u2019t do that\u2014he didn\u2019t step up \/ he didn\u2019t speak out\u2014there was a lack of leadership\u2014and there was some real pain and hurt. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You also talk about young men standing strong. When you read that passage that you quoted, earlier, from First Corinthians 16, where it talks about acting like men\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes, sir. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014there is a challenge in there to be strong. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> You bet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let all that you do be done in love. How do you train a boy to stand strong in this culture? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Well, I think what you can do is give them a vision for greatness. One of the things that I want my son to know is that: \u201cListen, if you are going to lead, leadership is going to cost you. And we follow somebody who stepped up for our sin. We follow somebody who spoke out against corruption and dead religion.\u201d When He was criticized, challenged, and attacked, He stood strong. He understood He lived for a greater reward\u2014something more than Himself. He understood why He was here. He didn\u2019t look to be celebrated right here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I just tell them to stand strong. \u201cDon\u2019t give in when you are challenged, attacked, or criticized.\u201d But if you step up and you speak out in our culture\u2014you two gentlemen have been at the forefront of this. You know that people are going to say that you\u2019re bigoted, you\u2019re intolerant, and you\u2019re unloving. If you\u2019re somebody that doesn\u2019t want those labels even cast at you, then, you\u2019ll go, \u201cOkay, I learn to be silent now.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> So, I just say, \u201cYou just need to understand people are not going to always praise you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbecause you say and do the right thing.\u201d I try and tell them: \u201cWhen you are criticized\u2014if it\u2019s true, then, you need to change. You need to seek forgiveness \/ make amends; but if it\u2019s not true, then, just brace yourself and do your job.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I\u2019ve been spending a lot of time in the Book of Philippians, over the last couple of months. In Philippians 1:27, Paul is talking to the church about what it looks like to walk or to live in a manner worthy of the gospel. The first thing he says is: \u201cStand firm.\u201d Standing firm is a foundation for what living a life worthy of the gospel is going to look like. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says that in Chapter 1; and then, he unpacks it. And you get to Chapter 4, verse 1; and he says, \u201cSo, finally, my brothers, stand firm.\u201d This whole issue of being anchored in truth \/ anchored in character\u2014this is something that we didn\u2019t just make this up. This is something that is bedrock to our faith. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> You know, I\u2019ll say this to you guys. One of the things you ask kids what they want to be when they grow up; and they don\u2019t ever give you: \u201cI want to be polite.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI want to be a good citizen.\u201d \u201cI want to be a faithful person who never misses a Sunday.\u201d Of course, they don\u2019t say that; right? They want to be great. They have super heroes\u2014firemen, rescuers, Navy SEALs. What I try to share with them is that: \u201cLook, even the heroes that you follow\u2014these are men that they don\u2019t ever back down. You don\u2019t see Batman backing down. You don\u2019t see Superman backing down. And you certainly don\u2019t see Jesus backing down. Godly men never back down.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a great verse in Jeremiah. It\u2019s one of the ones they memorize, underneath this, where it says that God is talking to Jeremiah. He says, \u201cI have made you a fortified city, a pillar of iron, a wall of bronze.\u201d I love sports. I\u2019ve been around sports and involved with sports. We talk about the steel curtain. We talk about great linebackers. You give them a vision for what men are\u2014on some little fleeting arena like sports. Imagine being that in all of life?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The last two items that you\u2019ve got on your list are the same for both young men and young women; aren\u2019t they? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Unpack both of those for us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s because, no matter, what you do\u2014as a young man or young woman\u2014you better make sure that you realize you\u2019ve always got something to learn\u2014no matter how much you step up, no matter how much you speak up, no matter how much you stand strong. We\u2019ve got to stay humble and be vigilant against pride. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really try and define humility for them\u2014which is not\u2014not believing you are gifted\u2014but it\u2019s like a definition I read a long time ago. I think maybe C.S. Lewis is the one who came up with this one\u2014but: \u201cDon\u2019t think less of yourself. Think of yourself less.\u201d So, just remember that people are going to sharpen you the rest of your life\u2014that anything you do that\u2019s great is not done because you are essentially great but because of Christ working in you. You\u2019re a cracked pot\u2014an earthen vessel. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>So, yes, \u201cStay humble\u201d is number four. Number five is: \u201cServe the King\u201d\u2014to live for that greater reward. Live for His kingdom, and His glory, and His righteousness. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I like it that you are attacking the issue of pride because this is where guys\u2014and I know girls \/ young ladies can get caught off guard by their ego, as well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut it seems that men struggle more with the pride issue than women do. How did you instruct your sons to deal with the pride issue as they became men? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Well, you know, Dennis, it is a constant issue that I hopefully will model before them. I mean, the legacy we leave, ultimately, is the life that we live before our kids. So, I\u2019m just always trying to, myself, clothe myself in humility. I talk to them specifically about how their dad doesn\u2019t live in isolation. No matter how great you are, God wants you to live in community with other men that speak strongly into your life. My kids know\u2014my kids know the men that speaking into me. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you this. Someone asked me one time, \u201cWhat\u2019s the best thing that you do to lead your wife?\u201d I said, \u201cI tell her who she can go to when I\u2019m less of man than I want to be.\u201d I tell our kids, \u201cWhenever there is an issue that they think I\u2019m not parenting well \/ leading well, that I want to be a great dad and I need help.\u201d So, they know the men to call and say: \u201cHey, would you sit down with my dad and me as we work through this? I think he\u2019s being too hard on me in this,\u201d or, \u201cI think this is unreasonable.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI say, \u201cListen, I want to be coached, as a dad.\u201d I try and model that for them\u2014and just show them that: \u201cListen, I need others to help me. I\u2019ve got to get the log out of my own eye.\u201d So, I seek their forgiveness when I make a mistake. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it really fits with this last one you talked about, just a few moments ago, \u201cServe the King.\u201d Our surrender to the King, ultimately, deals with our arrogance \/ our pride and helps us rightly evaluate ourselves as the men or women that God has made us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tReally, my challenge to the listener, at this point, is to take Todd\u2019s list and steal one of them\u2014okay?\u2014and begin to craft your own list of five, ten\u2014maybe, it is more; alright? But where are you going to start? Just pick one of these and say: \u201cYou know what? When they come home from school today or as we spend the weekend together, we\u2019re going to talk about \u201cStepping Up\u201d,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tor \u201cSpeaking Out\u201d, or \u201cStanding Strong\u201d, or \u201cStaying Humble\u201d, or \u201cServing the King\u201d. Pick one of those five. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> That\u2019s a great thing to do, Dennis. They can\u2014we\u2019ll even put this on your website. Folks can go there and download this. There are verses under each one. What is great about these are they are intentionally short so that, on the way to school, you can talk about it\u2014rehearse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI will laugh about this with them. Sometimes, it can be very mundane. My kids know that there are five of them. So, we\u2019ve kind of\u2014\u201cStep Up\u201d is one. \u201cSpeak Out\u201d is two. So, sometimes, I will just look at them, across the room; and I\u2019ll just hold up, most often, four fingers: \u201cStay Humble.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, this can be even silly like some of\u2014my, now, fourth-grader was having success at a particular game\u2014was standing up and just doing some kind of dance over everybody. I just kind of looked at him, with four fingers, and held them up. He kind of just melted back into his chair. [Laughter] So: \u201cStay humble over there, or I\u2019ll get involved.\u201d Anyhow, they are intentionally short so they can be rehearsed and reviewed continually. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And get back in the Book where you get these instructions\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Todd:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and find your marching orders from the Scriptures because, if there has ever been a time when parents needed to be in this Book and be hearing from God personally as they raise kids, it\u2019s today. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You talk about the dad who had taken his son through the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series. I\u2019m thinking about what\u2019s coming up a little more than three weeks from now. On the day before the Super Bowl<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, we\u2019ve got guys gathering in churches, all across the country\u2014hundreds of locations\u2014where there is going to be a <em>Stepping Up<\/em> one-day video event for men. We\u2019re calling it Super Saturday. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuys are gathering with other guys to go through four sessions\u2014people like Dennis Rainey, and Crawford Loritts, and Robert Lewis, and Matt Chandler, Voddie Baucham, other guys who are coaching us on how we can step up and be the men God\u2019s called us to be.
