I bet there\u2019ll be some people going to the movies tonight because a lot of people, on New Year\u2019s Eve\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014either watch a movie at home or go out to the theaters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In doing all this radio\u2014we\u2019ve done over the past 22 years now; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. Or into\u2014we\u2019re in our twenty-second year; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the things that came out, early on, was that most families go to the movie on Christmas and New Year\u2019s\u2014and on some of the major family holidays. It\u2019s like: \u201cWe don\u2019t know how to live with each other. We go to a movie!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019re going to talk about movies today because, not long ago, our friends, Alex and Stephen Kendrick, stopped by and shared with our staff a little of what\u2019s going on in their lives\u2014plans for their next movie. We\u2019re going to talk about their plans for a new movie; but first, we\u2019re going to talk about some of what\u2019s going on in their private lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Nice to have you guys here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Always good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, let\u2019s start with the important stuff. Why don\u2019t you hand that to your brother, [Laughter] and we\u2019ll show a picture. You tell us about your family; alright?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo here\u2019s the picture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>There she is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell us the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>My wife and I have had four biological children. There were still empty seats around the table. I knew we were not done having kids, and my wife started talking about adoption. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we were flying, in February, to approve the final print on <em>Courageous<\/em> before it went to theaters\u2014I\u2019m sitting on an airplane\u2014and I\u2019m reading in John 10 about Jesus being our Shepherd. I\u2019m thinking, at the same time, about my role as a father\u2014being a shepherd over my children. I get down to this verse where Jesus says, \u201cI have other sheep that are not of this fold, that I must bring to become a part of this fold; and then, we\u2019ll have one Shepherd and one fold.\u201d I know that\u2019s about the Gentiles being included in the gospel; but that morning, the Lord just took that Scripture and punched me in the face with it. He said, \u201cYou need to be open to adoption.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I turned to my wife on the airplane and said, \u201cI think God\u2019s telling us we need to be open to adoption.\u201d She was already there\u2014she\u2019s like \u201cYes!\u201d You know? I wrote \u201cAdoption\u201d next to that verse in my Bible and dated it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you fast-forward two years later. We\u2019d already filled out all the paperwork. We\u2019re in Israel with our pastor and our church. They start sending us these referrals. You know, you get a picture of this little orphan from China; and, \u201cDo you want to adopt this child?\u201d My wife\u2019s all excited, and I\u2019m excited, too; but the Lord\u2014just, in my spirit\u2014it was like, \u201cNope. This is not her.\u201d We prayed through it for awhile, and I turned down this referral. My wife cried, you know\u2014we\u2019re thinking\u2014but I did not have a peace about it. They sent us another referral\u2014nope. No peace about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA month later, they sent us another referral. No peace about it. So, then, I called the adoption agency and said, \u201cHow does this work?\u2014because this is really hard! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cEvery time we\u2019re praying through it\u2014and I feel like I can\u2019t move forward\u2014and I don\u2019t know why. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s fear inside of me or if this is God.\u201d He said, \u201cWell, sometimes people may turn down one or two,\u201d\u2014this is after I had already turned down three. He said, \u201cBut, you know, you need to do whatever the Lord leads you to do.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI called another family. They said, \u201cStephen, if it\u2019s not a \u2018Yes,\u2019 it\u2019s a \u2018No.\u2019\u201d They said, \u201cIf God doesn\u2019t give you a peace of mind, it\u2019s a \u2018No.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey sent us a fourth referral. Same situation\u2014I turned down four referrals. In February, of that year, they quit sending us referrals. I was kind of relieved because it was this heart-breaking experience every time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, this year, in March, they sent us a referral. It was like the Lord said: \u201cThat\u2019s her. That\u2019s who you\u2019ve been waiting on all this time.\u201d This little girl was born with a heart condition. Her mom abandoned her in Nanjing, China\u2014to save her life, really. Well, we did all the research\u2014her mom couldn\u2019t afford the surgeries\u2014wrapped her in a\u2014red blanket, which means, \u201cGood luck, and I love you,\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tput all of her medical condition information with her, and left her outside of a bank\u2014where people who have money, you know, are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>I was getting ready to go through this same process of turning this down. I turned to my wife; and I said, \u201cI really like this girl!\u201d She said, \u201cMe, too.\u201d I said, \u201cI think this is the one;\u201d and she said, \u201cIt is.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was born on February\u2014[Laughter] She was born on February 14, 2011\u2014Valentine\u2019s Day. My wife turned to me; and she said, \u201cShe was born on Valentine\u2019s Day with a broken heart.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe said, \u201cYes.\u201d We locked all that in, moved forward with it, and we were very excited about it. My wife, a few weeks later, said, \u201cWhen did God tell you that we were supposed to adopt?\u201d I was like, \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d She said, \u201cDidn\u2019t you write it in your Bible?\u201d So, I went back, and I found my Bible, and opened it up\u2014February 14, 2011.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>The day that she was born in China was the day God told me, \u201cYou need to adopt.\u201d [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we got there, the name, Mia, was the name God had given us for her. In the Greek, Mia means \u201cone\u201d or \u201cfirst\u201d. When you see it in Ephesians 4\u2014\u201cWe have one Lord, one faith, one baptism,\u201d\u2014in the feminine, it\u2019s the word, <em>mia<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, in John 11\u2014\u201cI have other sheep that are not of this fold, and they will be a part of this fold,\u201d\u2014that verse God gave me\u2014the word, <em>mia<\/em>, is in that passage. We get to China; and her mom had named her Yi-Fang, which in Chinese, that\u2019s\u2014that\u2019s the word, \u201cone\u201d or \u201cfirst\u201d. It\u2019s the same name. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, we found out that the day God had prompted us to pray, in June of that same year, was the day that she was having her heart surgery to save her life. All these things\u2014God just said, \u201cI\u2019m in this.\u201d We went to China, and we got her. This year, God has just blown my mind with His heart for the orphan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve been studying Scripture about the plight of the orphan. They\u2019re the poorest of the poor. They\u2019re destitute. No one hears their cry. And God says, in Psalm 68:5: \u201cI\u2019m the father to the fatherless. I will place the lonely into families.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, I\u2019ve been studying the doctrine of adoption in Scripture\u2014in the New Testament\u2014that God says that He doesn\u2019t just justify us and declare us righteous when we give our life to Christ\u2014He doesn\u2019t just regenerate us and make us new\u2014but He says, \u201cNo, I want you to be My children; and I\u2019m adopting you into My family.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s interesting\u2014the Holy Spirit\u2014the Bible says\u2014is a Spirit of adoption; whereby, God adopts us into His family. That Spirit of adoption causes us to cry out, \u201cAbba, Father,\u201d\u2014that we were orphans\u2014destitute, away from God\u2014and God causes us, in with His Holy Spirit, to pray to God and cry out, \u201cAbba, Father,\u201d which is what Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane\u2014to His Daddy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2014for the orphans\u2014who have no one to hear their cry\u2014you and I have One who always hears our cry\u2014our heavenly Father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. Is that cool? [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you been doing anything significant or\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>I can\u2019t top that. [Laughter] I rejoice with him. It was\u2014you know, he was sending me pictures from China, while they were over there. That was so cool to see God work\u2014you know\u2014and I got to enjoy this story as it was happening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe would send me one thing; and I would be like, \u201cNo way!\u201d Then, a couple days later, news comes; and, \u201cNo way!\u201d It\u2019s just obvious how you see the Lord working\u2014the Lord working. The Lord is the author of this story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd when you depend on Him, and are seeking Him, and you wait on Him\u2014which is so hard to do\u2014when you wait, and wait, and wait\u2014but the end of this story is, \u201cAww, you can\u2019t beat that story!\u201d It\u2019s incredible what the Lord does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It is a cool story. This spring, we\u2019re going to get see you in theaters again; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Yes. It\u2019s not a Kendrick brothers\u2019 film; but we have a dear friend, Kevin Downs, and then, the Irwin brothers. The Irwins did the movie, <em>October Baby. <\/em>Then, Kevin Downs plays my police officer partner in <em>Courageous<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>The crooked guy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Yes; but he loves the Lord. They are finishing up a movie called <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out.<\/em> It is a hilarious story about a group of dads that get together to watch all of these three families\u2019 kids\u2014while they send the moms on a night out, just to\u2014they get dressed up and go to their nicest restaurant\u2014and what happens when they come up with this simple plan: \u201cWe\u2019re going to take our kids to a Chuck-E Cheese<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>-like place\u2014just burn them out\u2014playing games, go home, and put them to bed.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it just didn\u2019t go that way! A lot of funny things happen; but in the course of the movie, you realize how priceless the role of a mom is\u2014and how she nurtures and cares for these kids in way that God designed her to do. You see this tender, funny story played out. About the end of the movie, there are some wonderful heart-tender moments\u2014that people will no doubt laugh and cry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I get to be the pastor in the movie. The lady that plays my wife is Patricia Heaton\u2014if you all have seen <em>Everybody Loves Raymond<\/em>\u2014very sweet lady and very open about her faith. I was pleasantly surprised by her own testimony\u2014and praying together before scenes, and things like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Robert Amaya\u2014who was in <em>Courageous<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Yes, Robert Amaya, who plays Javier, the Snake King, in <em>Courageous<\/em>. He\u2019s in this movie, as well. He does some hilarious stuff. So Kevin Downs, Robert Amaya, and me, from <em>Courageous<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And Samwise Gamgee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Yes! Sean Astin! He is\u2014he plays one of the hobbits in <em>Lord of the Rings<\/em>. I really enjoyed getting to know him. He is a funny, funny guy in real life. We were able to spend a lot of time talking about the Lord. Then, Trace Adkins, who\u2019s a country music star. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere were many Christians in this movie, and some not there yet; but we were able to minister to them. We were able to talk for 45 minutes to an hour. We were able to plant a lot of seeds there. So, I want to encourage you to pray for these guys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell us what it was like not being in charge. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Well, Stephen and I have enjoyed growing up and telling these stories. And up through <em>Courageous<\/em>, we had only done the projects the Lord had given us to do. And we have more coming, so I\u2019m excited about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we went through a season where Stephen was consulting with another Christian film, and I\u2019m helping Kevin on his film. It was different to go on set\u2014when we\u2019re prone to say: \u201cAlright, guys. Let\u2019s all gather around. This is the standard. This is how we\u2019re praying. This is the vision for this scene,\u201d and then, I can\u2019t do that. So, yes, there\u2019s a part of me that it is hard for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>But I love these guys\u2014you know, Robert, and Kevin, and the Irwins\u2014putting these movies together. We\u2019re all learning, and growing, and learning how to tell stories of redemption that can minister to the masses. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I got to talk with the other actors a lot more. Normally, a director meets with the gaffer, who does all the lighting; and the director of photography, to pick all the angles. He\u2019s doing that while the actors are, over here, rehearsing. Then, you bring them in. They walk through, and they block the scene, and then, you jump in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when I\u2019m an actor and director, there\u2019s never a time I\u2019m not doing one of those things. If you come on, just as an actor, you can sit there and say, \u201cBring me some more sweet tea please.\u201d [Laughter] You make sure everything\u2019s right\u2014and you\u2019ve rehearsed your lines\u2014and then you go on and do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it is different, but I enjoyed\u2014Stephen and I are rooting for this Christian film genre to continue to grow. We\u2019re trying to invest and, at least, share what we\u2019ve learned, up to this point, with as many as we can\u2014in hopes that this next generation of Christian filmmakers will get better, and better, and better, and more effective at presenting the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, Stephen, you formalized that process a little bit in the last year because, always on your films, you were\u2014a part of the agenda was to nurture young filmmakers and bring them along; but you\u2019ve kind of taken a more intentional step. Tell everybody about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>This year, with our pastor\u2019s blessing, we have launched out. Alex and I are making the next movie independent of Sherwood Pictures. This came after two or three years of prayer. What God began to really make it clear to us was\u2014we were nurturing this one apple tree in our Sherwood garden\u2014but then, if we\u2019re going to think big-picture, and long- term, and be an impact, in the nations, for Christ\u2014we need to be planting a whole orchard of apple trees for the kingdom. So, we\u2019re going to be making this next movie; and we\u2019re going to be intentionally trying to pull in more young Christian filmmakers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Yes, it just\u2014if someone says, \u201cOh, you\u2019re leaving Sherwood,\u201d no, we\u2019re\u2014Sherwood is our home-base\u2014that\u2019s our church. We\u2019re still there\u2014still ordained ministers there\u2014but if somebody says, \u201cWell, why are you doing this?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, two quick things\u2014number one, all of our movies were shot modern-day\u2014Albany, Georgia. We\u2019re thinking: \u201cWell, my goodness. What about all these other plots the Lord\u2019s laying on our heart? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo we have to shoot everything modern-day Albany, Georgia?\u201d Well, we love Albany. That\u2019s been our home for over a decade, and we <em>love<\/em> the church; but we have to shoot there, if we do it in the current model, because the volunteers are there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the second thing is\u2014instead of using volunteers, that are wonderful people\u2014I mean, they\u2019re <em>amazing<\/em> people\u2014but they\u2019re not going to make films if we\u2019re not making films. They have day-jobs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we want to pass the torch\u2014or begin passing the torch\u2014to the next generation of filmmakers\u2014like Stephen said\u2014helping them mature and grow. If we can mentor them\u2014they go with us wherever we need to make a movie\u2014and then, at the end of this time, they\u2019ve got a movie-making experience to take\u2014and hopefully, as the Lord calls them\u2014not in Kendrick brothers\u2019 name\u2014but as the Lord calls them to make more films for the kingdom. That\u2019s when we talk about planting an orchard of apple trees. We have to invest in the next generation. As you know, whoever wants the next generation the most will get them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Explain the process you guys go through in deciding, \u201cWhat\u2019s the next movie project for us?\u201d because you\u2019re in the midst of that, right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>Oh, yes. When we have the direction for the next to do, we\u2019re very excited about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe believe that whatever you do, you need to lay the groundwork in prayer. It\u2019s preparing the field for the crop and the harvest. So, what we do\u2014we go through a season of prayer. Then, at some point, it\u2019s almost like He downloads\u2014the whole theme, the direction, the plot-points\u2014things like that. He\u2019s done that for this next film already.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So\u2014can you tell us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>Yes. I\u2019ll give you a piece of it\u2014an appetizer. As far as the theme\u2014most of us have some strategy for our finances. If I said, \u201cHow many people have some strategy for finances?\u201d most of you would raise your hand. If I said, \u201cHow many people have some strategy for your health?\u201d many of you would raise your hands. \u201cWell, this is on this diet,\u201d or, \u201cThis\u2014we\u2019re going to stay away from this.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m going to eat more of this,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m working out. I\u2019m doing this and that.\u201d You have some strategy for\u2014many areas of your life you have a strategy for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut how many of us have a prayer strategy for our marriage, for our children, for our own personal walk with God? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019m not talking about for your meals, a trip, or when you\u2019re sick. That\u2019s not what I\u2019m talking about. I\u2019m saying\u2014where you have a prayer strategy\u2014\u201cThese are the verses. These are the principles, from Scripture, that I am applying to my marriage. I\u2019m asking the Lord to draw us closer together and closer to the Lord\u2014to give us a new heart and one mind,\u201d you know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy wife and I are one unit. We are not two people that sometimes are opposed to one another. We are one unit\u2014we have to operate as one unit. And you go\u2014you pray for your kids. You pray for their future spouses, you pray for their heart, for what God\u2019s called them to do\u2014for wisdom, discernment, all those things. You pray for your pastor\u2014for your church. You pray for this ministry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow many of us have those kinds of detailed prayer strategies?\u2014just like you do for your health, your finance, or something else\u2014your kids\u2019 education. We don\u2019t! Why? That\u2019s the most important thing you can do. What do the Scriptures say about going into your closet\u2014alone with you and the Lord? Prayer is not entertaining. Prayer takes work! Prayer is\u2014you have to work at prayer like you have to work at your marriage and at your job! Prayer is not always, initially, fulfilling; \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut the Lord says: \u201cSeek Me, and you\u2019ll find Me if you seek Me with all your heart.\u201d \u201cThe prayers of a righteous man accomplish much.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, this next film is about learning how to do battle on your knees first\u2014getting alone with the Lord and saying: \u201cFor my marriage\u2026\u201d and, \u201cFor my children\u2026\u201d \u201cFor my family\u2026\u201d \u201cFor my church\u2026\u201d \u201cFor my personal ministry\u2026\u201d \u201cFor these missionaries\u2026\u201d or whatever the Lord lays on Your heart\u2014that you develop a prayer strategy. You turn your closet, or wherever you pray privately, into a war room. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, this film will be about these people struggling in certain issues; including, marriage. The Lord begins sending people to teach them how to do battle in prayer\u2014to develop prayer strategies. At the end of this movie, we want people to step up and say: \u201cLord, I have to increase my prayer life. I need to begin, not just venting or being frustrated about certain areas of my life\u2014venting about my marriage and complaining\u2014I need to do warfare. I need to begin building prayer strategies for these areas of my life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Lord calls us, and He gives you the ammunition to do that. When they leave, we want to fire them up\u2014give them a picture of what it looks like\u2014that it is a battle\u2014that it is work\u2014that it is worth it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So Alex, you\u2019re at the very beginning of this. What does it take to get from where you are today to when we\u2019ll go the theater and see this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>We lay the groundwork in prayer. He gives us the theme and the idea. Then, He starts dropping in these scenes. And Stephen and I will\u2014this is a common conversation. We\u2019ll meet\u2014and we do, several times, every week\u2014and we say, \u201cHey, God gave me another piece for this next film,\u201d or, \u201cGod gave me another element for this thing.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when we start writing them down; and you get excited. What we always do is\u2014we take these little colored sticky-notes\u2014they may be yellow, blue, green, red, whatever\u2014and we write down these things. We put them all over the wall. They\u2019re all over the place! And the work begins. We move them around and put them in the right order. We write a story that, hopefully, people will sit there\u2014and they\u2019ll see themselves on the screen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Stephen, can you give us a rough idea of when we might go to the theater and see this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>Usually, it happens in three-month blocks to ramp all the way up to it. Alex and I are going to spend the next three months writing the script. We\u2019ll do pre-production for three months. Lord-willing, we\u2019ll shoot next spring for three months. Then, we\u2019ll do editing for about three months. So, it\u2019ll probably be the spring or the fall of 2015.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019ve been listening to a recent conversation with Alex and Stephen Kendrick. Both of them agree\u2014not being in charge feels very different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>It was different to go on set\u2014when we\u2019re prone to say: \u201cAlright, guys. Let\u2019s all gather around. This is the standard. This is how we\u2019re praying. This is the vision for this scene,\u201d\u2014and then, I can\u2019t do that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I enjoy\u2014Stephen and I are rooting for this Christian film genre to continue to grow. I bet there\u2019ll be some people going to the movies tonight because a lot of people, on New Year\u2019s Eve\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u2014either watch a movie at home or go out to the theaters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>In doing all this radio\u2014we\u2019ve done over the past 22 years now; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes. Or into\u2014we\u2019re in our twenty-second year; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>One of the things that came out, early on, was that most families go to the movie on Christmas and New Year\u2019s\u2014and on some of the major family holidays. It\u2019s like: \u201cWe don\u2019t know how to live with each other. We go to a movie!\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019re going to talk about movies today because, not long ago, our friends, Alex and Stephen Kendrick, stopped by and shared with our staff a little of what\u2019s going on in their lives\u2014plans for their next movie. We thought, \u201cCan we share that with our listeners?\u201d And they said, \u201cSure!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>They\u2019re good men and good friends. We\u2019re going to talk about their plans for a new movie; but first, we\u2019re going to talk about some of what\u2019s going on in their private lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Interview]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Nice to have you guys here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Always good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So, let\u2019s start with the important stuff. Why don\u2019t you hand that to your brother, [Laughter] and we\u2019ll show a picture. You tell us about your family; alright?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo here\u2019s the picture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>There she is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell us the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>My wife and I have had four biological children. There were still empty seats around the table. I knew we were not done having kids, and my wife started talking about adoption. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we were flying, in February, to approve the final print on <em>Courageous<\/em> before it went to theaters\u2014I\u2019m sitting on an airplane\u2014and I\u2019m reading in John 10 about Jesus being our Shepherd. I\u2019m thinking, at the same time, about my role as a father\u2014being a shepherd over my children. I get down to this verse where Jesus says, \u201cI have other sheep that are not of this fold, that I must bring to become a part of this fold; and then, we\u2019ll have one Shepherd and one fold.\u201d I know that\u2019s about the Gentiles being included in the gospel; but that morning, the Lord just took that Scripture and punched me in the face with it. He said, \u201cYou need to be open to adoption.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>5:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I turned to my wife on the airplane and said, \u201cI think God\u2019s telling us we need to be open to adoption.\u201d She was already there\u2014she\u2019s like \u201cYes!\u201d You know? I wrote \u201cAdoption\u201d next to that verse in my Bible and dated it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you fast-forward two years later. We\u2019d already filled out all the paperwork. We\u2019re in Israel with our pastor and our church. They start sending us these referrals. You know, you get a picture of this little orphan from China; and, \u201cDo you want to adopt this child?\u201d My wife\u2019s all excited, and I\u2019m excited, too; but the Lord\u2014just, in my spirit\u2014it was like, \u201cNope. This is not her.\u201d We prayed through it for awhile, and I turned down this referral. My wife cried, you know\u2014we\u2019re thinking\u2014but I did not have a peace about it. They sent us another referral\u2014nope. No peace about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA month later, they sent us another referral. No peace about it. So, then, I called the adoption agency and said, \u201cHow does this work?\u2014because this is really hard! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cEvery time we\u2019re praying through it\u2014and I feel like I can\u2019t move forward\u2014and I don\u2019t know why. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s fear inside of me or if this is God.\u201d He said, \u201cWell, sometimes people may turn down one or two,\u201d\u2014this is after I had already turned down three. He said, \u201cBut, you know, you need to do whatever the Lord leads you to do.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI called another family. They said, \u201cStephen, if it\u2019s not a \u2018Yes,\u2019 it\u2019s a \u2018No.\u2019\u201d They said, \u201cIf God doesn\u2019t give you a peace of mind, it\u2019s a \u2018No.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey sent us a fourth referral. Same situation\u2014I turned down four referrals. In February, of that year, they quit sending us referrals. I was kind of relieved because it was this heart-breaking experience every time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, this year, in March, they sent us a referral. It was like the Lord said: \u201cThat\u2019s her. That\u2019s who you\u2019ve been waiting on all this time.\u201d This little girl was born with a heart condition. Her mom abandoned her in Nanjing, China\u2014to save her life, really. Well, we did all the research\u2014her mom couldn\u2019t afford the surgeries\u2014wrapped her in a\u2014red blanket, which means, \u201cGood luck, and I love you,\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tput all of her medical condition information with her, and left her outside of a bank\u2014where people who have money, you know, are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>I was getting ready to go through this same process of turning this down. I turned to my wife; and I said, \u201cI really like this girl!\u201d She said, \u201cMe, too.\u201d I said, \u201cI think this is the one;\u201d and she said, \u201cIt is.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was born on February\u2014[Laughter] She was born on February 14, 2011\u2014Valentine\u2019s Day. My wife turned to me; and she said, \u201cShe was born on Valentine\u2019s Day with a broken heart.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe said, \u201cYes.\u201d We locked all that in, moved forward with it, and we were very excited about it. My wife, a few weeks later, said, \u201cWhen did God tell you that we were supposed to adopt?\u201d I was like, \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d She said, \u201cDidn\u2019t you write it in your Bible?\u201d So, I went back, and I found my Bible, and opened it up\u2014February 14, 2011.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>The day that she was born in China was the day God told me, \u201cYou need to adopt.\u201d [Applause]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we got there, the name, Mia, was the name God had given us for her. In the Greek, Mia means \u201cone\u201d or \u201cfirst\u201d. When you see it in Ephesians 4\u2014\u201cWe have one Lord, one faith, one baptism,\u201d\u2014in the feminine, it\u2019s the word, <em>mia<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, in John 11\u2014\u201cI have other sheep that are not of this fold, and they will be a part of this fold,\u201d\u2014that verse God gave me\u2014the word, <em>mia<\/em>, is in that passage. We get to China; and her mom had named her Yi-Fang, which in Chinese, that\u2019s\u2014that\u2019s the word, \u201cone\u201d or \u201cfirst\u201d. It\u2019s the same name. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, we found out that the day God had prompted us to pray, in June of that same year, was the day that she was having her heart surgery to save her life. All these things\u2014God just said, \u201cI\u2019m in this.\u201d We went to China, and we got her. This year, God has just blown my mind with His heart for the orphan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve been studying Scripture about the plight of the orphan. They\u2019re the poorest of the poor. They\u2019re destitute. No one hears their cry. And God says, in Psalm 68:5: \u201cI\u2019m the father to the fatherless. I will place the lonely into families.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, I\u2019ve been studying the doctrine of adoption in Scripture\u2014in the New Testament\u2014that God says that He doesn\u2019t just justify us and declare us righteous when we give our life to Christ\u2014He doesn\u2019t just regenerate us and make us new\u2014but He says, \u201cNo, I want you to be My children; and I\u2019m adopting you into My family.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s interesting\u2014the Holy Spirit\u2014the Bible says\u2014is a Spirit of adoption; whereby, God adopts us into His family. That Spirit of adoption causes us to cry out, \u201cAbba, Father,\u201d\u2014that we were orphans\u2014destitute, away from God\u2014and God causes us, in with His Holy Spirit, to pray to God and cry out, \u201cAbba, Father,\u201d which is what Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane\u2014to His Daddy. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2014for the orphans\u2014who have no one to hear their cry\u2014you and I have One who always hears our cry\u2014our heavenly Father. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Wow. Is that cool? [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you been doing anything significant or\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>I can\u2019t top that. [Laughter] I rejoice with him. It was\u2014you know, he was sending me pictures from China, while they were over there. That was so cool to see God work\u2014you know\u2014and I got to enjoy this story as it was happening. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe would send me one thing; and I would be like, \u201cNo way!\u201d Then, a couple days later, news comes; and, \u201cNo way!\u201d It\u2019s just obvious how you see the Lord working\u2014the Lord working. The Lord is the author of this story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd when you depend on Him, and are seeking Him, and you wait on Him\u2014which is so hard to do\u2014when you wait, and wait, and wait\u2014but the end of this story is, \u201cAww, you can\u2019t beat that story!\u201d It\u2019s incredible what the Lord does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>It is a cool story. This spring, we\u2019re going to get see you in theaters again; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Yes. It\u2019s not a Kendrick brothers\u2019 film; but we have a dear friend, Kevin Downs, and then, the Irwin brothers. The Irwins did the movie, <em>October Baby. <\/em>Then, Kevin Downs plays my police officer partner in <em>Courageous<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>The crooked guy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Yes; but he loves the Lord. They are finishing up a movie called <em>Moms\u2019 Night Out.<\/em> It is a hilarious story about a group of dads that get together to watch all of these three families\u2019 kids\u2014while they send the moms on a night out, just to\u2014they get dressed up and go to their nicest restaurant\u2014and what happens when they come up with this simple plan: \u201cWe\u2019re going to take our kids to a Chuck-E Cheese<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>-like place\u2014just burn them out\u2014playing games, go home, and put them to bed.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it just didn\u2019t go that way! A lot of funny things happen; but in the course of the movie, you realize how priceless the role of a mom is\u2014and how she nurtures and cares for these kids in way that God designed her to do. You see this tender, funny story played out. About the end of the movie, there are some wonderful heart-tender moments\u2014that people will no doubt laugh and cry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I get to be the pastor in the movie. The lady that plays my wife is Patricia Heaton\u2014if you all have seen <em>Everybody Loves Raymond<\/em>\u2014very sweet lady and very open about her faith. I was pleasantly surprised by her own testimony\u2014and praying together before scenes, and things like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Robert Amaya\u2014who was in <em>Courageous<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Yes, Robert Amaya, who plays Javier, the Snake King, in <em>Courageous<\/em>. He\u2019s in this movie, as well. He does some hilarious stuff. So Kevin Downs, Robert Amaya, and me, from <em>Courageous<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>And Samwise Gamgee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Yes! Sean Astin! He is\u2014he plays one of the hobbits in <em>Lord of the Rings<\/em>. I really enjoyed getting to know him. He is a funny, funny guy in real life. We were able to spend a lot of time talking about the Lord. Then, Trace Adkins, who\u2019s a country music star. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere were many Christians in this movie, and some not there yet; but we were able to minister to them. We were able to talk for 45 minutes to an hour. We were able to plant a lot of seeds there. So, I want to encourage you to pray for these guys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Tell us what it was like not being in charge. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Well, Stephen and I have enjoyed growing up and telling these stories. And up through <em>Courageous<\/em>, we had only done the projects the Lord had given us to do. And we have more coming, so I\u2019m excited about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we went through a season where Stephen was consulting with another Christian film, and I\u2019m helping Kevin on his film. It was different to go on set\u2014when we\u2019re prone to say: \u201cAlright, guys. Let\u2019s all gather around. This is the standard. This is how we\u2019re praying. This is the vision for this scene,\u201d and then, I can\u2019t do that. So, yes, there\u2019s a part of me that it is hard for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>But I love these guys\u2014you know, Robert, and Kevin, and the Irwins\u2014putting these movies together. We\u2019re all learning, and growing, and learning how to tell stories of redemption that can minister to the masses. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I got to talk with the other actors a lot more. Normally, a director meets with the gaffer, who does all the lighting; and the director of photography, to pick all the angles. He\u2019s doing that while the actors are, over here, rehearsing. Then, you bring them in. They walk through, and they block the scene, and then, you jump in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when I\u2019m an actor and director, there\u2019s never a time I\u2019m not doing one of those things. If you come on, just as an actor, you can sit there and say, \u201cBring me some more sweet tea please.\u201d [Laughter] You make sure everything\u2019s right\u2014and you\u2019ve rehearsed your lines\u2014and then you go on and do it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it is different, but I enjoyed\u2014Stephen and I are rooting for this Christian film genre to continue to grow. We\u2019re trying to invest and, at least, share what we\u2019ve learned, up to this point, with as many as we can\u2014in hopes that this next generation of Christian filmmakers will get better, and better, and better, and more effective at presenting the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Yes, Stephen, you formalized that process a little bit in the last year because, always on your films, you were\u2014a part of the agenda was to nurture young filmmakers and bring them along; but you\u2019ve kind of taken a more intentional step. Tell everybody about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>This year, with our pastor\u2019s blessing, we have launched out. Alex and I are making the next movie independent of Sherwood Pictures. This came after two or three years of prayer. What God began to really make it clear to us was\u2014we were nurturing this one apple tree in our Sherwood garden\u2014but then, if we\u2019re going to think big-picture, and long- term, and be an impact, in the nations, for Christ\u2014we need to be planting a whole orchard of apple trees for the kingdom. So, we\u2019re going to be making this next movie; and we\u2019re going to be intentionally trying to pull in more young Christian filmmakers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>Yes, it just\u2014if someone says, \u201cOh, you\u2019re leaving Sherwood,\u201d no, we\u2019re\u2014Sherwood is our home-base\u2014that\u2019s our church. We\u2019re still there\u2014still ordained ministers there\u2014but if somebody says, \u201cWell, why are you doing this?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, two quick things\u2014number one, all of our movies were shot modern-day\u2014Albany, Georgia. We\u2019re thinking: \u201cWell, my goodness. What about all these other plots the Lord\u2019s laying on our heart? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo we have to shoot everything modern-day Albany, Georgia?\u201d Well, we love Albany. That\u2019s been our home for over a decade, and we <em>love<\/em> the church; but we have to shoot there, if we do it in the current model, because the volunteers are there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the second thing is\u2014instead of using volunteers, that are wonderful people\u2014I mean, they\u2019re <em>amazing<\/em> people\u2014but they\u2019re not going to make films if we\u2019re not making films. They have day-jobs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we want to pass the torch\u2014or begin passing the torch\u2014to the next generation of filmmakers\u2014like Stephen said\u2014helping them mature and grow. If we can mentor them\u2014they go with us wherever we need to make a movie\u2014and then, at the end of this time, they\u2019ve got a movie-making experience to take\u2014and hopefully, as the Lord calls them\u2014not in Kendrick brothers\u2019 name\u2014but as the Lord calls them to make more films for the kingdom. That\u2019s when we talk about planting an orchard of apple trees. We have to invest in the next generation. As you know, whoever wants the next generation the most will get them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Explain the process you guys go through in deciding, \u201cWhat\u2019s the next movie project for us?\u201d because you\u2019re in the midst of that, right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>Oh, yes. When we have the direction for the next to do, we\u2019re very excited about it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe believe that whatever you do, you need to lay the groundwork in prayer. It\u2019s preparing the field for the crop and the harvest. So, what we do\u2014we go through a season of prayer. Then, at some point, it\u2019s almost like He downloads\u2014the whole theme, the direction, the plot-points\u2014things like that. He\u2019s done that for this next film already.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So\u2014can you tell us?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>Yes. I\u2019ll give you a piece of it\u2014an appetizer. As far as the theme\u2014most of us have some strategy for our finances. If I said, \u201cHow many people have some strategy for finances?\u201d most of you would raise your hand. If I said, \u201cHow many people have some strategy for your health?\u201d many of you would raise your hands. \u201cWell, this is on this diet,\u201d or, \u201cThis\u2014we\u2019re going to stay away from this.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m going to eat more of this,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m working out. I\u2019m doing this and that.\u201d You have some strategy for\u2014many areas of your life you have a strategy for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut how many of us have a prayer strategy for our marriage, for our children, for our own personal walk with God? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019m not talking about for your meals, a trip, or when you\u2019re sick. That\u2019s not what I\u2019m talking about. I\u2019m saying\u2014where you have a prayer strategy\u2014\u201cThese are the verses. These are the principles, from Scripture, that I am applying to my marriage. I\u2019m asking the Lord to draw us closer together and closer to the Lord\u2014to give us a new heart and one mind,\u201d you know. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy wife and I are one unit. We are not two people that sometimes are opposed to one another. We are one unit\u2014we have to operate as one unit. And you go\u2014you pray for your kids. You pray for their future spouses, you pray for their heart, for what God\u2019s called them to do\u2014for wisdom, discernment, all those things. You pray for your pastor\u2014for your church. You pray for this ministry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow many of us have those kinds of detailed prayer strategies?\u2014just like you do for your health, your finance, or something else\u2014your kids\u2019 education. We don\u2019t! Why? That\u2019s the most important thing you can do. What do the Scriptures say about going into your closet\u2014alone with you and the Lord? Prayer is not entertaining. Prayer takes work! Prayer is\u2014you have to work at prayer like you have to work at your marriage and at your job! Prayer is not always, initially, fulfilling; \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbut the Lord says: \u201cSeek Me, and you\u2019ll find Me if you seek Me with all your heart.\u201d \u201cThe prayers of a righteous man accomplish much.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, this next film is about learning how to do battle on your knees first\u2014getting alone with the Lord and saying: \u201cFor my marriage\u2026\u201d and, \u201cFor my children\u2026\u201d \u201cFor my family\u2026\u201d \u201cFor my church\u2026\u201d \u201cFor my personal ministry\u2026\u201d \u201cFor these missionaries\u2026\u201d or whatever the Lord lays on Your heart\u2014that you develop a prayer strategy. You turn your closet, or wherever you pray privately, into a war room. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, this film will be about these people struggling in certain issues; including, marriage. The Lord begins sending people to teach them how to do battle in prayer\u2014to develop prayer strategies. At the end of this movie, we want people to step up and say: \u201cLord, I have to increase my prayer life. I need to begin, not just venting or being frustrated about certain areas of my life\u2014venting about my marriage and complaining\u2014I need to do warfare. I need to begin building prayer strategies for these areas of my life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Lord calls us, and He gives you the ammunition to do that. When they leave, we want to fire them up\u2014give them a picture of what it looks like\u2014that it is a battle\u2014that it is work\u2014that it is worth it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>So Alex, you\u2019re at the very beginning of this. What does it take to get from where you are today to when we\u2019ll go the theater and see this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex: <\/strong>We lay the groundwork in prayer. He gives us the theme and the idea. Then, He starts dropping in these scenes. And Stephen and I will\u2014this is a common conversation. We\u2019ll meet\u2014and we do, several times, every week\u2014and we say, \u201cHey, God gave me another piece for this next film,\u201d or, \u201cGod gave me another element for this thing.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when we start writing them down; and you get excited. What we always do is\u2014we take these little colored sticky-notes\u2014they may be yellow, blue, green, red, whatever\u2014and we write down these things. We put them all over the wall. They\u2019re all over the place! And the work begins. We move them around and put them in the right order. We write a story that, hopefully, people will sit there\u2014and they\u2019ll see themselves on the screen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>21:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Stephen, can you give us a rough idea of when we might go to the theater and see this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen: <\/strong>Usually, it happens in three-month blocks to ramp all the way up to it. Alex and I are going to spend the next three months writing the script. We\u2019ll do pre-production for three months. Lord-willing, we\u2019ll shoot next spring for three months. Then, we\u2019ll do editing for about three months. So, it\u2019ll probably be the spring or the fall of 2015.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>Well, we\u2019ve been listening to a recent conversation with Alex and Stephen Kendrick.
