Thanks for joining us on the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ve got a question. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You have a question?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think I know the answer to this. Have you and Mary Ann ever hosted an <em>Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> event?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The two of us together?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She has been the silent partner in our hosting of <em>The Art of Marriage.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Of course, but she\u2019s by your side.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Oh yes. Oh yes, we\u2019ve had opportunity. We\u2019ve had a couple of <em>Art of Marriage <\/em>events hosted at our local church, and we had nothing to do with that\u2014that was other people in the church who said, \u201cWe\u2019d like to host it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, but you put your stamp of approval on it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And you hosted it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And it was a great ministry for the church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>2:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn addition to that, I\u2019ve had the opportunity to host an <em>Art of Marriage <\/em>event for people who are involved in local radio\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014husbands and wives\u2014where we\u2019ve done that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Down at WinShape in Georgia.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> In Georgia. And in fact, I\u2019m going to be hosting one today and tomorrow at the WinShape Foundation for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You are omnipresent. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I do try to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Here\u2019s why we\u2019re mentioning this, folks, because, if you see what\u2019s happening on television\u2014see what\u2019s happening in our culture\u2014marriage and family are in trouble. Frankly, about five years ago, FamilyLife pulled back and said: \u201cHow can we strike the best offensive weaponry to make a difference in marriages and families\u2014in addition to everything else we have going on\u2014our radio broadcast, <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae <\/sup><\/em>marriage getaways, our tools and resources we create?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe thought, \u201cWe want to create <em>The Art of Marriage <\/em>and put that tool in the hands of lay couples\u2014men and women\u2014who want to make a difference in their neighborhoods, their communities\u2014maybe, a bigger area\u2014a section of the state.\u201d We have now had in excess of\u2014I think over 12,000 couples who have hosted <em>The Art of Marriage <\/em>in their community, with over 350,000 people attending.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, we\u2019re coming to folks today, saying: \u201cWould you join this movement of lay couples, who want to make a difference in marriages and families, by hosting one on the weekend of Valentine\u2019s, out in February\u20142-14-14. We are looking for 2,014 <em>Art of Marriage <\/em>events hosted by you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And if that\u2019s not a great weekend for you, that is fine. You can pick a weekend that works better for you. But we thought: \u201cValentine\u2019s on a Friday. Wouldn\u2019t it be great if there were churches, all around the country, doing special events for couples on that weekend?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And couples, in their homes\u2014hosting, maybe, half a dozen couples coming into their home\u2014maybe, going down to their basement and watching the videos of <em>The Art of Marriage.<\/em> It\u2019s a plug-and-play conference event that is a home run. I don\u2019t want to sound like I\u2019m bragging, but you were the one who created it. I was just kind of a bystander on this. It really is the finest material that is available out there\u2014to really strengthen marriages and families\u2014that we can put in your hands.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, you\u2019re a little more than a bystander because you\u2019re one of the people who is speaking as a part of <em>The Art of Marriage <\/em>video series. One of the guys who was one of the very first people that we talked to about <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>\u2014one of the first people we filmed for this\u2014is a pastor from Georgia, who has the same birthday as you; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Crawford Loritts is a very good friend; and frankly, is the highest-rated speaker on <em>The Art of Marriage. <\/em>There are over 15 different experts in this series. This is taken from Genesis, Chapter 2. This is a live presentation Crawford was doing in another setting, but it gives you an idea of the kind of teaching that\u2019s at the heart of an <em>Art of Marriage <\/em>event. Here is Dr. Crawford Loritts with input on God\u2019s design for a husband and a wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford:<\/strong> I love sitting down with couples who have been married 40, 50, 60 years. I love sitting down and just listening to them talk. I love looking in their faces and seeing the beauty of endurance\u2014understanding that they've been through some storms together and the fact that they are still standing. It's not that they've just survived, but they have thrived because they've been through some storms together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey don't make as much as they used to. They've had to downsize and sell the house. The kids, sometimes, have to send them a little help; but their sweetness\u2014there\u2019s a wealth of experience there, and they've made it. That's a vision for myself and for Karen. I look at her sometimes and say: \"I just want to be so old with you\u2014you pass me the box of Depend<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>s.\" [Laughter] Ah, you laugh. You're going to get there.\u00a0 Are they showing?\u00a0 No? [Laughter] Alright; I'll hear about that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOneness grows as we receive our spouse as a gift from God. That's the big idea of this presentation. Circle that: \"It grows as we receive our spouse as a gift from God.\" \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou might say: \"I don't feel like he's a gift from God. I feel like he's a gift from somebody else. I'm not going to mention his name, but I don't feel like he's always a gift from God.\" Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod's plan for oneness in marriage involves three responsibilities. You must leave, cleave, and become one flesh. That's God's plan, based upon His purposes. Simple\u2014leave, cleave, and become one flesh. Somebody asks you, \u201cWhat is God\u2019s plan for marriage, rooted in this Sacred Book here? What is His plan?\u201d \u201cLeave, cleave, and become one flesh.\u201d Every successful, distinctively Christian, marriage is framed by those three ideas:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou leave, you cleave, and you become one flesh. Now, we're going to unpack that in this presentation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, you leave. The first responsibility is to establish independence from your parents. One of the things that disturbs me a little bit\u2014a trend over the last few years in our culture\u2014this is very, very disturbing to me\u2014but adulthood and adult independence is getting later, and later, and later, and later, and later, and later, and later. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we are living in a culture in which we are not raising our kids to celebrate and to embrace independence. There is this tacit expectation that we've created in our children\u2014that it's okay to keep relying upon Mom and Dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHear me on this. Karen and I have raised four kids. One of the things that you have to have locked dead in your mind is that those kids are born to go. [Laughter] I don\u2019t mean that as funny. They\u2019re born to leave. You have to, not only expect that, you\u2019ve got to raise them and instill that expectation in them. You have to instill that in. You have to embrace independence. Set them up for independence\u2014to go, to leave. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd some of us are reaping a harvest of parental interference because, quite frankly, we have encouraged them to interfere. We\u2019ve overly relied on them\u2014overly depended upon them. If you give a dance, you have to pay the band. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve asked them for stuff. You\u2019ve asked them for money. You\u2019ve asked them to come and help you out. You\u2019ve left the door wide open. So, don\u2019t be surprised if they give you lots of unsolicited advice. It is a huge pattern in our culture. Kids are growing up with the expectation: \u201cHey, yo, dude! Mom\u2019s going to take care of me,\u201d \u201cDad\u2019s going to take care of me.\u201d We've got to break this whole cycle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGenesis 2:24 says: \"Therefore, a man shall leave\u201d\u2014the Hebrew for <em>leave<\/em> means <em>go<\/em>\u2014<em>get out<\/em>\u2014\"his father and his mother.\"\u00a0 I'll never forget\u2014our youngest son told us\u2014my youngest son, when he graduated from college, was being interviewed by this large urban church to be the youth pastor there in Chicago.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you know, he'd gone through the interview process and this kind of thing. Then, the final question\u2014he was telling me this\u2014the senior pastor asked him\u2014he said: \"Now, Brendan, once again, why do you really want this position? Why do you really\u2014what's on your heart?\" He went on and talked about his passion for young people\u2014and yada yada\u2014and went on. He said, \"But there is one other thing I've got to tell you.\" He said, \"What's that?\" \"My Dad said I can't come home.\" [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd he said that did the deed. So, you see? You laugh, but it's true. Now, leaving must be done in the context of honor to one's parents\u2014honor to them. They have sacrificed for us, and they have carried us, and they have invested in us; but we need to do it in a way that honors our parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the top of page 57: \"It is essential that your spouse is the primary relationship in your life.\" Your spouse is the primary relationship in your life. Your in-laws must know that\u2014on both sides of the equation--that once you say \"I do,\" those significant relationships change. Your mother is always your mother, but your mother is not your wife. Your father is always your father, but your father is not your husband. The critical primary relationship has to do with you two. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the gifts that\u2014and Karen's been really good at this\u2014that we have given our kids\u2014we have huge traditions, growing up around the holidays\u2014but when they got married, we said to them: \"Your marriage, your relationship, and your traditions are primary. We don't want you to feel the pressure of having to do what we've always done, as a family.\"\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think you need to pull some of those expectations off the table very, very practically\u2014that now, this is the primary relationship. I\u2019ve run interference with my parents about certain things: \u201cNo, no. What Karen says goes.\u201d I will always back my wife up, and vice versa. You have to establish the boundary\u2014practically speaking\u2014project\u2014this is, indeed, the primary relationship. If you don't do that, you are inviting huge problems in the marriage and in the family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBe careful not to be financially dependent on your parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, in today's economy, certainly, we all need help. Certainly, we all need help. For younger couples, let me give you this piece of advice: \u201cIf your parents give you money, please offer to pay it back.\u201d Offer to pay it back. Don't continue like you were, as a teenager. Let them see you owning the responsibility of your own direction and of your own life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeople will treat you the way you let them treat you. Part of the problem with controlling parents is that children do not project enough independence. We revert back to this \"Mommy\/Daddy, help me,\" mindset. I'm not talking about being-in-your-face, but project the fact that you are willing to take the responsibility for your own life and to stand on your two feet. People will treat you the way you project yourself and you let them treat you.<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, I labor this because this is a <em>huge issue<\/em>. I have met 50-year-old men\u2014who get around their mothers and fathers\u2014and act like they're 14. Help, yes\u2014dependence, never. Rough spots in our lives\u2014understand that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLetter C: \"Beware of over-dependence in other areas\u2014friends, hobbies, and activities.\" Remember, when you said \"I do,\" you're married; okay? You can't act like a teenager. You can't act like hanging around your boys all the time or hanging around your girlfriends all the time. Your hobby is not your surrogate mate. This is the establishment of clarity about this relationship right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI'm not married simply because I want my want my sexual needs met. I'm not married because I want somebody to clean up after me. I'm not married because, when I come home, I want my food there. I'm not married because I want some little trophy wife, on my arm, when I go to the dinner or this kind of thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour husband and your wife\u2014they're not manikins. They're not a piece of jewelry. They're not something that makes you look good. That's the primary relationship in your life. Everything else\u2014including how you spend your leisure time, your friends\u2014they are woefully second to that primary relationship. A very, very important concept\u2014leave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, let's make it personal. Is your attachment in any of these areas hindering oneness in your marriage? Take a look at these things. What about parents' money? This is a little something that they use to reel you in\u2014overly trying to please your parents because you don't want Mount Vesuvius\u2014you don't want them upset.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPast romances\u2014things that you have not cut the tie with\u2014hobbies\u2014more in love with the first tee, or the fishing boat, or whatever?\u2014friendships, after-work parties, pre-marriage dreams, siding with parents versus spouses. You go, \"Ouch, I didn't realize we were going to get this personal.\" Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe degree to which you leave is the degree to which you can cleave. I mean, that's a huge statement. The degree to which I sever the tie is the degree to which I can cleave to my wife or my husband.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRoman numeral II: \u201cThe second responsibility is to establish commitment to one another: \u2018Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife.\u2019\" You know, the last 15 years or so, we've gotten scared of the term, co-dependent; and rightly so. Co-dependence is a very unhealthy thing\u2014where you smother one another. You're so personally needy that you end up controlling each other, emotionally. That's not a healthy thing.\u00a0 That's not a healthy thing. However, the very fact that you are married says that you passionately need the other person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tInterdependence is a wonderful thing. God has called us to be healthfully interdependent on one another. You <em>need<\/em> that person sitting next to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou <em>desperately<\/em> need that person sitting next to you. When you said, \"I do,\" it was a statement of profound neediness. You don't know what you would do without the other person, and that's where this cleaving comes together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat person\u2014that you're married to\u2014must never feel as if you are using them; rather, that you profoundly need them. That's the reason why I tell young couples\u2014if one is painfully independent and cannot press into the other\u2014I always tell them, \"Hey, back off a little bit until you can get to that point. Don't get married\u2014not just yet.\" Genesis 2:24 says, \"Therefore, shall a man leave his father and mother and hold fast his wife.\" \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod created Adam with an unmet need. Adam was alone. And, by the way, this is prior to the fall\u2014obvious observation. So, neediness is not a sinful disposition. Neediness is not something that came along later on, because we were sinfully inclined, and it's a part of the fall. No, God created\u2014and this is a profound statement\u2014prior to the fall of man, God created, in all of us, an unmet need. To be needy in this regard is extraordinarily healthy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we've been listening to the first part of a message from Crawford Loritts about God\u2019s design for marriage. Frankly, about five years ago, FamilyLife pulled back and said: \u201cHow can we strike the best offensive weaponry to make a difference in marriages and families\u2014in addition to everything else we have going on\u2014our radio broadcast, <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae <\/sup><\/em>marriage getaways, our tools and resources we create?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>3:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe thought, \u201cWe want to create <em>The Art of Marriage <\/em>and put that tool in the hands of lay couples\u2014men and women\u2014who want to make a difference in their neighborhoods, their communities\u2014maybe, a bigger area\u2014a section of the state.\u201d We have now had in excess of\u2014I think over 12,000 couples who have hosted <em>The Art of Marriage <\/em>in their community, with over 350,000 people attending.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, we\u2019re coming to folks today, saying: \u201cWould you join this movement of lay couples, who want to make a difference in marriages and families, by hosting one on the weekend of Valentine\u2019s, out in February\u20142-14-14. We are looking for 2,014 <em>Art of Marriage <\/em>events hosted by you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And if that\u2019s not a great weekend for you, that is fine. You can pick a weekend that works better for you. But we thought: \u201cValentine\u2019s on a Friday. Wouldn\u2019t it be great if there were churches, all around the country, doing special events for couples on that weekend?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>4:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And couples, in their homes\u2014hosting, maybe, half a dozen couples coming into their home\u2014maybe, going down to their basement and watching the videos of <em>The Art of Marriage.<\/em> It\u2019s a plug-and-play conference event that is a home run. I don\u2019t want to sound like I\u2019m bragging, but you were the one who created it. I was just kind of a bystander on this. It really is the finest material that is available out there\u2014to really strengthen marriages and families\u2014that we can put in your hands.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, you\u2019re a little more than a bystander because you\u2019re one of the people who is speaking as a part of <em>The Art of Marriage <\/em>video series. One of the guys who was one of the very first people that we talked to about <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>\u2014one of the first people we filmed for this\u2014is a pastor from Georgia, who has the same birthday as you; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Crawford Loritts is a very good friend; and frankly, is the highest-rated speaker on <em>The Art of Marriage. <\/em>There are over 15 different experts in this series. I love sitting down and just listening to them talk. I love looking in their faces and seeing the beauty of endurance\u2014understanding that they've been through some storms together and the fact that they are still standing. It's not that they've just survived, but they have thrived because they've been through some storms together. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>6:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey don't make as much as they used to. They've had to downsize and sell the house. The kids, sometimes, have to send them a little help; but their sweetness\u2014there\u2019s a wealth of experience there, and they've made it. That's a vision for myself and for Karen. I look at her sometimes and say: \"I just want to be so old with you\u2014you pass me the box of Depend<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>s.\" [Laughter] Ah, you laugh. You're going to get there.\u00a0 Are they showing?\u00a0 No? [Laughter] Alright; I'll hear about that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOneness grows as we receive our spouse as a gift from God. That's the big idea of this presentation. Circle that: \"It grows as we receive our spouse as a gift from God.\" \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>7:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou might say: \"I don't feel like he's a gift from God. I feel like he's a gift from somebody else. I'm not going to mention his name, but I don't feel like he's always a gift from God.\" Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod's plan for oneness in marriage involves three responsibilities. You must leave, cleave, and become one flesh. That's God's plan, based upon His purposes. Simple\u2014leave, cleave, and become one flesh. Somebody asks you, \u201cWhat is God\u2019s plan for marriage, rooted in this Sacred Book here? What is His plan?\u201d \u201cLeave, cleave, and become one flesh.\u201d Every successful, distinctively Christian, marriage is framed by those three ideas:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>8:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou leave, you cleave, and you become one flesh. Now, we're going to unpack that in this presentation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, you leave. The first responsibility is to establish independence from your parents. One of the things that disturbs me a little bit\u2014a trend over the last few years in our culture\u2014this is very, very disturbing to me\u2014but adulthood and adult independence is getting later, and later, and later, and later, and later, and later, and later. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we are living in a culture in which we are not raising our kids to celebrate and to embrace independence. There is this tacit expectation that we've created in our children\u2014that it's okay to keep relying upon Mom and Dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>9:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHear me on this. Karen and I have raised four kids. One of the things that you have to have locked dead in your mind is that those kids are born to go. [Laughter] I don\u2019t mean that as funny. They\u2019re born to leave. You have to, not only expect that, you\u2019ve got to raise them and instill that expectation in them. You have to instill that in. You have to embrace independence. Set them up for independence\u2014to go, to leave. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd some of us are reaping a harvest of parental interference because, quite frankly, we have encouraged them to interfere. We\u2019ve overly relied on them\u2014overly depended upon them. If you give a dance, you have to pay the band. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>10:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve asked them for stuff. You\u2019ve asked them for money. You\u2019ve asked them to come and help you out. You\u2019ve left the door wide open. So, don\u2019t be surprised if they give you lots of unsolicited advice. It is a huge pattern in our culture. Kids are growing up with the expectation: \u201cHey, yo, dude! Mom\u2019s going to take care of me,\u201d \u201cDad\u2019s going to take care of me.\u201d We've got to break this whole cycle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGenesis 2:24 says: \"Therefore, a man shall leave\u201d\u2014the Hebrew for <em>leave<\/em> means <em>go<\/em>\u2014<em>get out<\/em>\u2014\"his father and his mother.\"\u00a0 I'll never forget\u2014our youngest son told us\u2014my youngest son, when he graduated from college, was being interviewed by this large urban church to be the youth pastor there in Chicago.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>11:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you know, he'd gone through the interview process and this kind of thing. Then, the final question\u2014he was telling me this\u2014the senior pastor asked him\u2014he said: \"Now, Brendan, once again, why do you really want this position? Why do you really\u2014what's on your heart?\" He went on and talked about his passion for young people\u2014and yada yada\u2014and went on. He said, \"But there is one other thing I've got to tell you.\" He said, \"What's that?\" \"My Dad said I can't come home.\" [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd he said that did the deed. So, you see? You laugh, but it's true. Now, leaving must be done in the context of honor to one's parents\u2014honor to them. They have sacrificed for us, and they have carried us, and they have invested in us; but we need to do it in a way that honors our parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>12:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the top of page 57: \"It is essential that your spouse is the primary relationship in your life.\" Your spouse is the primary relationship in your life. Your in-laws must know that\u2014on both sides of the equation--that once you say \"I do,\" those significant relationships change. Your mother is always your mother, but your mother is not your wife. Your father is always your father, but your father is not your husband. The critical primary relationship has to do with you two. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the gifts that\u2014and Karen's been really good at this\u2014that we have given our kids\u2014we have huge traditions, growing up around the holidays\u2014but when they got married, we said to them: \"Your marriage, your relationship, and your traditions are primary. We don't want you to feel the pressure of having to do what we've always done, as a family.\"\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>13:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think you need to pull some of those expectations off the table very, very practically\u2014that now, this is the primary relationship. I\u2019ve run interference with my parents about certain things: \u201cNo, no. What Karen says goes.\u201d I will always back my wife up, and vice versa. You have to establish the boundary\u2014practically speaking\u2014project\u2014this is, indeed, the primary relationship. If you don't do that, you are inviting huge problems in the marriage and in the family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBe careful not to be financially dependent on your parents. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>14:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, in today's economy, certainly, we all need help. Certainly, we all need help. For younger couples, let me give you this piece of advice: \u201cIf your parents give you money, please offer to pay it back.\u201d Offer to pay it back. Don't continue like you were, as a teenager. Let them see you owning the responsibility of your own direction and of your own life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeople will treat you the way you let them treat you. Part of the problem with controlling parents is that children do not project enough independence. We revert back to this \"Mommy\/Daddy, help me,\" mindset. I'm not talking about being-in-your-face, but project the fact that you are willing to take the responsibility for your own life and to stand on your two feet. People will treat you the way you project yourself and you let them treat you.<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>15:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, I labor this because this is a <em>huge issue<\/em>. I have met 50-year-old men\u2014who get around their mothers and fathers\u2014and act like they're 14. Help, yes\u2014dependence, never. Rough spots in our lives\u2014understand that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLetter C: \"Beware of over-dependence in other areas\u2014friends, hobbies, and activities.\" Remember, when you said \"I do,\" you're married; okay? You can't act like a teenager. You can't act like hanging around your boys all the time or hanging around your girlfriends all the time. Your hobby is not your surrogate mate. This is the establishment of clarity about this relationship right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>16:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI'm not married simply because I want my want my sexual needs met. I'm not married because I want somebody to clean up after me. I'm not married because, when I come home, I want my food there. I'm not married because I want some little trophy wife, on my arm, when I go to the dinner or this kind of thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour husband and your wife\u2014they're not manikins. They're not a piece of jewelry. They're not something that makes you look good. That's the primary relationship in your life. Everything else\u2014including how you spend your leisure time, your friends\u2014they are woefully second to that primary relationship. A very, very important concept\u2014leave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, let's make it personal. Is your attachment in any of these areas hindering oneness in your marriage? Take a look at these things. What about parents' money? This is a little something that they use to reel you in\u2014overly trying to please your parents because you don't want Mount Vesuvius\u2014you don't want them upset.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>17:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPast romances\u2014things that you have not cut the tie with\u2014hobbies\u2014more in love with the first tee, or the fishing boat, or whatever?\u2014friendships, after-work parties, pre-marriage dreams, siding with parents versus spouses. You go, \"Ouch, I didn't realize we were going to get this personal.\" Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe degree to which you leave is the degree to which you can cleave. I mean, that's a huge statement. The degree to which I sever the tie is the degree to which I can cleave to my wife or my husband.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>18:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRoman numeral II: \u201cThe second responsibility is to establish commitment to one another: \u2018Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife.\u2019\" You know, the last 15 years or so, we've gotten scared of the term, co-dependent; and rightly so. Co-dependence is a very unhealthy thing\u2014where you smother one another. You're so personally needy that you end up controlling each other, emotionally. That's not a healthy thing.\u00a0 That's not a healthy thing. However, the very fact that you are married says that you passionately need the other person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tInterdependence is a wonderful thing. God has called us to be healthfully interdependent on one another. You <em>need<\/em> that person sitting next to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>19:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou <em>desperately<\/em> need that person sitting next to you. When you said, \"I do,\" it was a statement of profound neediness. You don't know what you would do without the other person, and that's where this cleaving comes together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat person\u2014that you're married to\u2014must never feel as if you are using them; rather, that you profoundly need them. That's the reason why I tell young couples\u2014if one is painfully independent and cannot press into the other\u2014I always tell them, \"Hey, back off a little bit until you can get to that point. Don't get married\u2014not just yet.\" Genesis 2:24 says, \"Therefore, shall a man leave his father and mother and hold fast his wife.\" \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>20:00<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod created Adam with an unmet need. Adam was alone. And, by the way, this is prior to the fall\u2014obvious observation. So, neediness is not a sinful disposition. Neediness is not something that came along later on, because we were sinfully inclined, and it's a part of the fall. No, God created\u2014and this is a profound statement\u2014prior to the fall of man, God created, in all of us, an unmet need. To be needy in this regard is extraordinarily healthy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we've been listening to the first part of a message from Crawford Loritts about God\u2019s design for marriage.
