It\u2019s a faith-based film. Brad says, \u201cThere is a tension between the faith-based element that he cares so much about and the need to make a successful movie.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Obviously, we hold each other accountable. We try to keep a very biblical worldview. If we ever do anything that is Scriptural within our films, we try to make sure it is accurate. We are very adamant on that level. Once that is\u2014we feel in place\u2014Bob, I am trying to do everything I can to make the <em>best possible<\/em> movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, October 4<sup>th<\/sup>. We are going to talk about a movie today; but before we talk about the movie, we want to talk about your pastor; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We do. This is a movie that our staff got a chance to see\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014back, a couple of months ago; but you were out of town the day that we showed the movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I was. You had the privilege of introducing Russ Rice, who was the producer, and Brad Silverman, who was the screenwriter and director of <em>Grace Unplugged<\/em>. Our staff really, really enjoyed this movie. It\u2019s a great movie. Frankly, Bob, I\u2019m really encouraged by the movies that are being produced by men and women who really follow Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is a movie that is opening in theaters, around the country, today. We did have a chance to chat with the producer, the screenwriter and the director\u2014that\u2019s two people who filled three roles on this movie\u2014Brad Silverman and Russ Rice. We thought you ought to hear our conversation with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we got a chance to partner up on a movie that you guys did\u2014called <em>No Greater Love<\/em>; right\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014a movie that went directly to DVD. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This movie is coming out in theaters. I remember when you were here, and we were talking about <em>No Greater Love<\/em>. You already had this script in mind\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014almost done, at that point; didn\u2019t you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know if it was done; but we definitely had the idea of this film, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The story\u2014and just give us a synopsis. What\u2019s the story, as you describe it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s good. I\u2019ll do the story, and Russ can do the heart behind it. Basically, a former rock star gets saved. He\u2019s a one-hit wonder from the 80\u2019s. He gets saved\u2014becomes a music pastor. He has one daughter. She grows up. She\u2019s following in his footsteps. She\u2019s a brilliant singer, performer\u2014herself. She wants to kind of go off and do her own thing. Dad is just scared to death of that\u2014for everything that he experienced. So, it becomes a father\/daughter struggle\u2014which, hopefully, is a very universal story that a lot of parents and teens can relate to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It reminded me a little of Luke, Chapter 15. You know what I\u2019m talking about? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> Yes, the prodigal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. Yes, was that part of the heart of what you wanted to communicate here? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> Yes\u2014I\u2019ll try to do this without crying. The germ of the story came\u2014[Emotion in voice] I said I wouldn\u2019t do this. The germ of the story came from my wife and my personal situation with our daughter, who ran away. It\u2019s been six years, I think. As we were going through this, we really had a burden for parents that have gone through this\u2014but even greater\u2014the burden that we have for young people. We see so many young people who profess faith and, then, they leave the church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe wanted to do something that was entertaining\u2014and we tried to do good quality films\u2014but at the same time, really, we look at ourselves as ministers. Part of that was, \u201cHow can we minister to the body of Christ?\u201d God uses those personal situations, a lot of times, to really give opportunity for other people to really realize that there is hope out there. There is hope for my daughter. She is not dead, and there is hope until she dies. We just pray that God would do that work in her life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She\u2019s got to know that Dad is making this movie about this prodigal daughter; doesn\u2019t she? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> It\u2019s been a big topic as to what level of personal-ness we should make this, Bob. This is something that Russ and I have prayed a lot about. We\u2019ve prayed\u2014our wives have been praying about\u2014and collectively\u2014\u201cJust to what degree does Russ even share his personal story?\u201d You know? You asked the obvious question, \u201cWhat\u2026\u201d\u2014the last thing we want to do is make things tougher, in terms of reconciliation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> When we were making this movie\u2014I\u2019m just hoping that tonight, somewhere, wherever she is, that she will walk into a theater\u2014[Emotion in voice] and walk into a theater, and see this film, and God would use it to bring her to Himself. So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, I remember, Brad, when you were talking about the germ of this and that the whole idea\u2014I think I said to you, \u201cSo, it\u2019s the Katy Perry story, or it could have been the Lindsay Lohan story, or the\u201d\u2014I mean, we can just kind of go on and on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve been in this industry long enough to know that what you are putting on the screen is actually fairly tame, compared to what really is going on behind the scenes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in the music business. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s interesting, I spent a lot of time in the music business, researching this\u2014just in the secular, belly of the beast\u2014and just trying to get just an authenticity. At the same time, we wanted this to be a PG, family film. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brad:<\/strong> So, deciding what struggles\u2014you know, there could be a myriad of struggles that this girl could go through. Obviously, a boy had to be some part of it but to what degree? We take that\u2014and obviously, trying to create a realism while still keeping it PG. I don\u2019t know if we hit that mark, but that\u2019s certainly what we strove for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. I want to ask about the acting side. Everybody is always curious about the different performers who are in the movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve got a lot of folks who have been in some pretty big Hollywood films. Kevin Pollak\u2014who was in this movie\u2014was in <em>A Few Good Men<\/em>\u2014has been in a number of other films. These are not necessarily folks who have a personal faith\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014but they\u2019re in your movie and were excited to be in the movie. Tell me about how folks responded\u2014in terms of being on the set. It had to be a very different feel for them being on this set. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> It was incredible. We probably have stories for\u2014specifically, the actors\u2014everyone\u2014we have some type of ministerial story. I don\u2019t want to say anything too personal. AJ\u2014the lead\u2014I mean, she\u2019s just the sweetest\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> She\u2019s a darling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> \u2014godly girl. I mean, here\u2019s a girl who was relatively famous. She and her sister\u2014I don\u2019t know if you guys have heard of Aly &amp; AJ. Yes, they were Disney<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> stars, back in the mid-90s. They are kind of reinventing themselves, as adult, young ladies. She is a\u2014as Russ was talking about\u2014in her case, she absolutely wanted to do it for the purpose of the message of the film. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut yes, there was a lot of evangelism\u2014a lot of times off set\u2014heated discussions with some of the actors and some of the cast. It was just a tremendous opportunity for people\u2014some to recommit themselves. It was really incredible, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It seems like the industry\u2014the film industry\u2014is more open than it\u2019s ever been for faith-based films. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And all of a sudden, we\u2019re starting to see like one a month come out. It\u2019s\u2014is that just a: \u201cHey! If there\u2019s money here, let\u2019s go get it,\u201d\u2014or is there more to it than that in the studios? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think there\u2019s anything more to it than that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> I mean, I wish I didn\u2019t sound so cynical as that; but if it didn\u2019t make money\u2014I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a movement toward God in Hollywood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> At the same time, it\u2019s got to be a compelling story\u2014I mean, a faith-based film with a weak cast and a weak story\u2014Christians don\u2019t want to go see that. Christians have a\u2014there is a discernment meter\u2014in terms of quality. You guys have to be conscious and aware of that, as you go about your craft. You recognize we can\u2019t just pander to this audience. We\u2019ve got to put out something that\u2019s going to be a compelling, moving story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Well, I mean, look\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> We just had that talk yesterday. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes. We talk about it all the time. I think there was a time that\u2014and this maybe is what was almost a springboard for me as a writer\/director to even get in to this as a believer\u2014when I heard a radio interview\u2014I don\u2019t remember who it was or where it was, but someone had made a comment that\u2014a film maker made a comment that\u2014and I know the name of the film. I\u2019m not going to say it to embarrass them\u2014this was years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey had said \u201cWell, we made this film. It honors God, but nobody came out to see it.\u201d I thought: \u201cWell, I saw it! I thought it was horrible!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> And that\u2014so, I think, obviously, we hold each other accountable. What\u2019s beautiful about that is we get the beauty of, hopefully, raising the bar. Each time, we want to raise the bar on ourselves\u2014but the whole industry\u2014I think, for the Christian film industry\u2014is Christians want good quality films. If we\u2019re Christians, we should be trying to make the best quality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is hard because we don\u2019t get the $50 million budget. So, if they give us a couple million, we are trying to do the best we can. At the same time, Hollywood isn\u2019t dictating what we do either. We\u2014they don\u2019t push back on us. They are like: \u201cHey, if it\u2019s going to hurt the Christian core audience, don\u2019t take it out,\u201d or, \u201cIf it\u2019s going to offend them, take it out\u2014if there is something that\u2019s offensive.\u201d So, we\u2019ve been able to make the films on our terms and not on their terms. That\u2019s been\u2014that\u2019s been really gratifying. We\u2019ll use their money to make our Christian films\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> How does that sound? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> Sounds good to me! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Russ, there\u2019s a scene in the film where Grace has left home\u2014she\u2019s out in Hollywood. Mom and Dad are still wrestling. Dad kind of comes to the point where he recognizes, \u201cI\u2019ve got to just give her up to God.\u201d He and his wife embrace, and they just have that moment of surrender. I\u2019m just imagining you, on the set, the day that that got\u2014that scene was shot. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> And every time I watch it\u2014for the last thousand times I\u2019ve seen this film\u2014it was interesting: When Brad and I were working on developing this story for this film, we\u2019d go out to lunch for a couple of hours. I\u2019d sit there and cry, like a baby. I\u2019d be like, \u201cThis is what the dad feels like.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, you feel\u2014I\u2019m going to tell you the truth\u2014there were nights I didn\u2019t sleep. I wanted to get in my car\u2014and there were nights I did get in my car and drive aimlessly, trying to hope to find her car somewhere to see what\u2019s going on with her. It can consume you if you have a child that runs away. I think a lot of that was portrayed well in the film. Brad took a lot of that experience that I went through and was able to use a lot of that for this. And something like this\u2014that happens in this film\u2014could put a wedge between the parents. [Emotion in voice] If you are out there, right now, and you\u2019re in that situation, get on your knees, with your spouse, and make that commitment that that situation is not going to separate you. In fact, it\u2019s going to make you closer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Emotion in voice] My wife and I had a lot of nights where we just cried, and kept committing our daughter to the Lord, and trying to give her over\u2014like in the movie\u2014to Him because, at the end of the day, you can\u2019t save your kids. There is no promise in the Bible that your kids are going to be saved. It\u2019s His work. I have four kids that are following the Lord right now, and I thank the Lord for that because I don\u2019t deserve any of my kids to be saved. So, four out of five is more grace than I ever deserve. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have to stay strong. We have to make sure that we stay one with our spouse during these times. It is so easy to start blaming each other. And I love that scene where\u2014don\u2019t want to give too much away in the movie\u2014but Johnny is packing to go find her. Michelle, the mom, comes out. She says: \u201cWhat are you going to do? You going to go hunt her down and bring her back? She\u2019s 18.\u201d Michelle says, \u201cIf you weren\u2019t so hard on her, maybe, she wouldn\u2019t have run away,\u201d\u2014and just to realize it\u2019s so easy to attack each other. That\u2019s not what we are called to do. We are called to be one. We are called to be united and to rest in God\u2019s sovereignty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod is sovereign. He allowed this to happen to my daughter, to your situation\u2014whatever your situation is. He will be glorified in that. At the end of the day, He\u2019s going to be glorified in that. Whatever your situation is, just be faithful to the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Russ, talk about why it\u2019s important that everybody go this weekend rather than waiting to go next weekend to see your movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> Because opening weekend\u2014a lot of people don\u2019t realize this\u2014but opening weekend is the most important weekend of a film\u2019s life. We need you out there, supporting this film this weekend. Based on these opening weekend numbers, they will expand this film into other theaters. They\u2019ll keep it longer if we do well this weekend, but we need a whole fleet to spread this wonderful message. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got some great materials, too, that are out there\u2014the <em>Own It <\/em>book. There is a soundtrack. There is a youth Bible study curriculum that we worked on. But it\u2019s just an entertaining movie, too. Hopefully, you won\u2019t be embarrassed to even take a neighbor. Grab a couple of extra tickets, at the theater, and take the neighbor. Use it as an evangelistic tool because Brad and I really tried to make a film that you don\u2019t have to be embarrassed by. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You can go out this weekend. Part of what you are doing\u2014when you go out this weekend\u2014is you are voting to see the next movie you want to make, really, because how this movie does opens or closes the door on the next movie. And what is it that\u2014you are looking at starting to shoot in January on a new film; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell us what it\u2019s about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> We have a couple of working titles. So, I\u2019ll leave the title off, right now; but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> I thought it was about a radio host. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. [Laughter] We did promise you a cameo; didn\u2019t we? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know if I can wait for this! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Man, yes. So, I\u2019m going to write something tonight\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> \u2014and I\u2019ll have it for you tomorrow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Send it to my agent, if you would. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes, exactly, exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> Oh my! He costs us too much money\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> \u2014already. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> \u201cWe can\u2019t afford that Lepine.\u201d [Laughter] You know, it deals with\u2014I don\u2019t want to take the weight off <em>Grace<\/em> and the emotion we\u2019re at, right now\u2014but it deals with just a topic that was also very dear to Russ and me, just as what we were struggling with\u2014dealing primarily with: \u201cWhat has God promised?\u201d It is a very American story, in that sense: \u201cWhat has God promised us? Has He promised us the Gospel or the American dream?\u201d It was something that we both\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wait! Wait! Wait! Do that again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> That was pretty good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Say\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes, I keep forgetting <em>Grace Unplugged<\/em>. [Laughter] In 2015, be ready because\u2014but isn\u2019t that something? It was something that both Russ and I were independently thinking about. It was one of those\u2014I came to him and he came to me\u2014and we\u2019re both like: \u201cWait! We both thought of it.\u201d In all fairness, if we both come to independent\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019ve got to do a movie on this concept.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> \u2014conclusions, it is sort of like confirming\u2014not that we are over-spiritualizing. We\u2019re saying: \u201cGosh! It\u2019s on both of our hearts.\u201d As I was looking around\u2014at my friends, at my family, and then, at my own heart\u2014I realized: \u201cHuh? Have I replaced the Gospel\u201d\u2014however <em>subtly<\/em>, however <em>deceptively<\/em>\u2014\u201cwith praying for my own comfort?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m sick. Heal me, God.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m out of work. Get me a better job.\u201d With this attitude of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> \u201cI need that new car.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes, \u201cI lost my job. Therefore, God has a better one for me.\u201d Now, we all believe Romans 8:28; but does that mean a higher-paying, better-dental-benefits job? I think that\u2019s what we subtly believe sometimes. So, it was on that\u2014that is the heart behind the story. So\u2014and then, it\u2019s packaged\u2014I won\u2019t bore you with what the packaging is, but it\u2019s a lot of fun. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Russ:<\/strong> It\u2019s great. It\u2019s set in\u2014a young man who wants to be a race car driver\u2014and the neglect of a father, who\u2019s so consumed with his business, that he doesn\u2019t take the time with the son. We don\u2019t want to tell you anything else because we want you to go see that one; but we know you won\u2019t because you\u2019ll have us come back and show it to you for free. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was wondering, \u201cWhere does the radio deejay fit into this story?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s just what I\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> We, actually, thought you\u2019d be the stock car driver. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019re praying that the film does well and praying that God will use it in the lives of teenage daughters, and their daddies, and families, and maybe, open up some conversations\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and maybe, some phone calls and some reconciliation out of this. So, hope folks will go out and see it. And thanks for making great movies that we can enjoy and take our friends to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould you thank these guys? It was\u2014it was a rental car\u2014a rent-a-dent\u2014and he ran over the curb! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It is encouraging to see guys who are taking risks, and who are going out and trying to make great movies that you can take anybody to\u2014that have a redemptive message\u2014that present the Gospel clearly in them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. And I think these are the kinds of movies, certainly, that the community of faith\u2014followers of Christ\u2014ought to support as it comes to your community. Invite some friends\u2014some families. Go see this movie. You\u2019re not going to be disappointed. It\u2019s got a great message\u2014a great theme. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, use it like we did our movies\u2014our kids would roll their eyes back in their heads: \u201cOh, Dad! We\u2019re not going to go get a Coke<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and a pizza, now, and talk about the <em>theme and the worldview<\/em>: \u2018What are they talking about? What does it represent?\u2019\u201d You did the same thing, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I did. You\u2019re right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I know you did! [Laughter] Absolutely; but take them out and talk about that. This is a movie that our staff got a chance to see\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014back, a couple of months ago; but you were out of town the day that we showed the movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I was. You had the privilege of introducing Russ Rice, who was the producer, and Brad Silverman, who was the screenwriter and director of <em>Grace Unplugged<\/em>. Our staff really, really enjoyed this movie. It\u2019s a great movie. Frankly, Bob, I\u2019m really encouraged by the movies that are being produced by men and women who really follow Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is a movie that is opening in theaters, around the country, today. We did have a chance to chat with the producer, the screenwriter and the director\u2014that\u2019s two people who filled three roles on this movie\u2014Brad Silverman and Russ Rice. We thought you ought to hear our conversation with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Previously Recorded Audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we got a chance to partner up on a movie that you guys did\u2014called <em>No Greater Love<\/em>; right\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014a movie that went directly to DVD. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This movie is coming out in theaters. I remember when you were here, and we were talking about <em>No Greater Love<\/em>. You already had this script in mind\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014almost done, at that point; didn\u2019t you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know if it was done; but we definitely had the idea of this film, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> The story\u2014and just give us a synopsis. What\u2019s the story, as you describe it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s good. I\u2019ll do the story, and Russ can do the heart behind it. Basically, a former rock star gets saved. He\u2019s a one-hit wonder from the 80\u2019s. He gets saved\u2014becomes a music pastor. He has one daughter. She grows up. She\u2019s following in his footsteps. She\u2019s a brilliant singer, performer\u2014herself. She wants to kind of go off and do her own thing. Dad is just scared to death of that\u2014for everything that he experienced. So, it becomes a father\/daughter struggle\u2014which, hopefully, is a very universal story that a lot of parents and teens can relate to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It reminded me a little of Luke, Chapter 15. You know what I\u2019m talking about? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> Yes, the prodigal. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. Yes, was that part of the heart of what you wanted to communicate here? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> Yes\u2014I\u2019ll try to do this without crying. The germ of the story came\u2014[Emotion in voice] I said I wouldn\u2019t do this. The germ of the story came from my wife and my personal situation with our daughter, who ran away. It\u2019s been six years, I think. As we were going through this, we really had a burden for parents that have gone through this\u2014but even greater\u2014the burden that we have for young people. We see so many young people who profess faith and, then, they leave the church. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe wanted to do something that was entertaining\u2014and we tried to do good quality films\u2014but at the same time, really, we look at ourselves as ministers. Part of that was, \u201cHow can we minister to the body of Christ?\u201d God uses those personal situations, a lot of times, to really give opportunity for other people to really realize that there is hope out there. There is hope for my daughter. She is not dead, and there is hope until she dies. We just pray that God would do that work in her life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> She\u2019s got to know that Dad is making this movie about this prodigal daughter; doesn\u2019t she? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> It\u2019s been a big topic as to what level of personal-ness we should make this, Bob. This is something that Russ and I have prayed a lot about. We\u2019ve prayed\u2014our wives have been praying about\u2014and collectively\u2014\u201cJust to what degree does Russ even share his personal story?\u201d You know? You asked the obvious question, \u201cWhat\u2026\u201d\u2014the last thing we want to do is make things tougher, in terms of reconciliation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> When we were making this movie\u2014I\u2019m just hoping that tonight, somewhere, wherever she is, that she will walk into a theater\u2014[Emotion in voice] and walk into a theater, and see this film, and God would use it to bring her to Himself. So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, I remember, Brad, when you were talking about the germ of this and that the whole idea\u2014I think I said to you, \u201cSo, it\u2019s the Katy Perry story, or it could have been the Lindsay Lohan story, or the\u201d\u2014I mean, we can just kind of go on and on. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve been in this industry long enough to know that what you are putting on the screen is actually fairly tame, compared to what really is going on behind the scenes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014in the music business. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s interesting, I spent a lot of time in the music business, researching this\u2014just in the secular, belly of the beast\u2014and just trying to get just an authenticity. At the same time, we wanted this to be a PG, family film. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brad:<\/strong> So, deciding what struggles\u2014you know, there could be a myriad of struggles that this girl could go through. Obviously, a boy had to be some part of it but to what degree? We take that\u2014and obviously, trying to create a realism while still keeping it PG. I don\u2019t know if we hit that mark, but that\u2019s certainly what we strove for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. I want to ask about the acting side. Everybody is always curious about the different performers who are in the movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve got a lot of folks who have been in some pretty big Hollywood films. Kevin Pollak\u2014who was in this movie\u2014was in <em>A Few Good Men<\/em>\u2014has been in a number of other films. These are not necessarily folks who have a personal faith\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Correct. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014but they\u2019re in your movie and were excited to be in the movie. Tell me about how folks responded\u2014in terms of being on the set. It had to be a very different feel for them being on this set. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> It was incredible. We probably have stories for\u2014specifically, the actors\u2014everyone\u2014we have some type of ministerial story. I don\u2019t want to say anything too personal. AJ\u2014the lead\u2014I mean, she\u2019s just the sweetest\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> She\u2019s a darling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> \u2014godly girl. I mean, here\u2019s a girl who was relatively famous. She and her sister\u2014I don\u2019t know if you guys have heard of Aly &amp; AJ. Yes, they were Disney<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> stars, back in the mid-90s. They are kind of reinventing themselves, as adult, young ladies. She is a\u2014as Russ was talking about\u2014in her case, she absolutely wanted to do it for the purpose of the message of the film. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut yes, there was a lot of evangelism\u2014a lot of times off set\u2014heated discussions with some of the actors and some of the cast. It was just a tremendous opportunity for people\u2014some to recommit themselves. It was really incredible, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It seems like the industry\u2014the film industry\u2014is more open than it\u2019s ever been for faith-based films. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brad:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And all of a sudden, we\u2019re starting to see like one a month come out. It\u2019s\u2014is that just a: \u201cHey! If there\u2019s money here, let\u2019s go get it,\u201d\u2014or is there more to it than that in the studios? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> I don\u2019t think there\u2019s anything more to it than that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> I mean, I wish I didn\u2019t sound so cynical as that; but if it didn\u2019t make money\u2014I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a movement toward God in Hollywood. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> At the same time, it\u2019s got to be a compelling story\u2014I mean, a faith-based film with a weak cast and a weak story\u2014Christians don\u2019t want to go see that. Christians have a\u2014there is a discernment meter\u2014in terms of quality. You guys have to be conscious and aware of that, as you go about your craft. You recognize we can\u2019t just pander to this audience. We\u2019ve got to put out something that\u2019s going to be a compelling, moving story. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Well, I mean, look\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> We just had that talk yesterday. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes. We talk about it all the time. I think there was a time that\u2014and this maybe is what was almost a springboard for me as a writer\/director to even get in to this as a believer\u2014when I heard a radio interview\u2014I don\u2019t remember who it was or where it was, but someone had made a comment that\u2014a film maker made a comment that\u2014and I know the name of the film. I\u2019m not going to say it to embarrass them\u2014this was years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey had said \u201cWell, we made this film. It honors God, but nobody came out to see it.\u201d I thought: \u201cWell, I saw it! I thought it was horrible!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> And that\u2014so, I think, obviously, we hold each other accountable. We try to keep a very biblical worldview. If we ever do anything that is Scriptural, within our films, we try to make sure it is accurate. We are very adamant on that level. Once that is\u2014we feel in place, Bob\u2014I am trying to do everything I can to make the <em>best possible<\/em> movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s part of the whole thing, too. What\u2019s beautiful about that is we get the beauty of, hopefully, raising the bar. Each time, we want to raise the bar on ourselves\u2014but the whole industry\u2014I think, for the Christian film industry\u2014is Christians want good quality films. If we\u2019re Christians, we should be trying to make the best quality. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is hard because we don\u2019t get the $50 million budget. So, if they give us a couple million, we are trying to do the best we can. At the same time, Hollywood isn\u2019t dictating what we do either. We\u2014they don\u2019t push back on us. They are like: \u201cHey, if it\u2019s going to hurt the Christian core audience, don\u2019t take it out,\u201d or, \u201cIf it\u2019s going to offend them, take it out\u2014if there is something that\u2019s offensive.\u201d So, we\u2019ve been able to make the films on our terms and not on their terms. That\u2019s been\u2014that\u2019s been really gratifying. We\u2019ll use their money to make our Christian films\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> How does that sound? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> Sounds good to me! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Russ, there\u2019s a scene in the film where Grace has left home\u2014she\u2019s out in Hollywood. Mom and Dad are still wrestling. Dad kind of comes to the point where he recognizes, \u201cI\u2019ve got to just give her up to God.\u201d He and his wife embrace, and they just have that moment of surrender. I\u2019m just imagining you, on the set, the day that that got\u2014that scene was shot. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> And every time I watch it\u2014for the last thousand times I\u2019ve seen this film\u2014it was interesting: When Brad and I were working on developing this story for this film, we\u2019d go out to lunch for a couple of hours. I\u2019d sit there and cry, like a baby. I\u2019d be like, \u201cThis is what the dad feels like.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, you feel\u2014I\u2019m going to tell you the truth\u2014there were nights I didn\u2019t sleep. I wanted to get in my car\u2014and there were nights I did get in my car and drive aimlessly, trying to hope to find her car somewhere to see what\u2019s going on with her. It can consume you if you have a child that runs away. I think a lot of that was portrayed well in the film. Brad took a lot of that experience that I went through and was able to use a lot of that for this. And something like this\u2014that happens in this film\u2014could put a wedge between the parents. [Emotion in voice] If you are out there, right now, and you\u2019re in that situation, get on your knees, with your spouse, and make that commitment that that situation is not going to separate you. In fact, it\u2019s going to make you closer. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Emotion in voice] My wife and I had a lot of nights where we just cried, and kept committing our daughter to the Lord, and trying to give her over\u2014like in the movie\u2014to Him because, at the end of the day, you can\u2019t save your kids. There is no promise in the Bible that your kids are going to be saved. It\u2019s His work. I have four kids that are following the Lord right now, and I thank the Lord for that because I don\u2019t deserve any of my kids to be saved. So, four out of five is more grace than I ever deserve. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have to stay strong. We have to make sure that we stay one with our spouse during these times. It is so easy to start blaming each other. And I love that scene where\u2014don\u2019t want to give too much away in the movie\u2014but Johnny is packing to go find her. Michelle, the mom, comes out. She says: \u201cWhat are you going to do? You going to go hunt her down and bring her back? She\u2019s 18.\u201d Michelle says, \u201cIf you weren\u2019t so hard on her, maybe, she wouldn\u2019t have run away,\u201d\u2014and just to realize it\u2019s so easy to attack each other. That\u2019s not what we are called to do. We are called to be one. We are called to be united and to rest in God\u2019s sovereignty. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod is sovereign. He allowed this to happen to my daughter, to your situation\u2014whatever your situation is. He will be glorified in that. At the end of the day, He\u2019s going to be glorified in that. Whatever your situation is, just be faithful to the Lord. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Russ, talk about why it\u2019s important that everybody go this weekend rather than waiting to go next weekend to see your movie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> Because opening weekend\u2014a lot of people don\u2019t realize this\u2014but opening weekend is the most important weekend of a film\u2019s life. We need you out there, supporting this film this weekend. Based on these opening weekend numbers, they will expand this film into other theaters. They\u2019ll keep it longer if we do well this weekend, but we need a whole fleet to spread this wonderful message. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve got some great materials, too, that are out there\u2014the <em>Own It <\/em>book. There is a soundtrack. There is a youth Bible study curriculum that we worked on. But it\u2019s just an entertaining movie, too. Hopefully, you won\u2019t be embarrassed to even take a neighbor. Grab a couple of extra tickets, at the theater, and take the neighbor. Use it as an evangelistic tool because Brad and I really tried to make a film that you don\u2019t have to be embarrassed by. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You can go out this weekend. Part of what you are doing\u2014when you go out this weekend\u2014is you are voting to see the next movie you want to make, really, because how this movie does opens or closes the door on the next movie. And what is it that\u2014you are looking at starting to shoot in January on a new film; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell us what it\u2019s about. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> We have a couple of working titles. So, I\u2019ll leave the title off, right now; but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> I thought it was about a radio host. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. [Laughter] We did promise you a cameo; didn\u2019t we? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know if I can wait for this! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Man, yes. So, I\u2019m going to write something tonight\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> \u2014and I\u2019ll have it for you tomorrow. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Send it to my agent, if you would. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes, exactly, exactly. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> Oh my! He costs us too much money\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes, that\u2019s true. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> \u2014already. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> \u201cWe can\u2019t afford that Lepine.\u201d [Laughter] You know, it deals with\u2014I don\u2019t want to take the weight off <em>Grace<\/em> and the emotion we\u2019re at, right now\u2014but it deals with just a topic that was also very dear to Russ and me, just as what we were struggling with\u2014dealing primarily with: \u201cWhat has God promised?\u201d It is a very American story, in that sense: \u201cWhat has God promised us? Has He promised us the Gospel or the American dream?\u201d It was something that we both\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Wait! Wait! Wait! Do that again. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> That was pretty good. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Say\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes, I keep forgetting <em>Grace Unplugged<\/em>. [Laughter] In 2015, be ready because\u2014but isn\u2019t that something? It was something that both Russ and I were independently thinking about. It was one of those\u2014I came to him and he came to me\u2014and we\u2019re both like: \u201cWait! We both thought of it.\u201d In all fairness, if we both come to independent\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019ve got to do a movie on this concept.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> \u2014conclusions, it is sort of like confirming\u2014not that we are over-spiritualizing. We\u2019re saying: \u201cGosh! It\u2019s on both of our hearts.\u201d As I was looking around\u2014at my friends, at my family, and then, at my own heart\u2014I realized: \u201cHuh? Have I replaced the Gospel\u201d\u2014however <em>subtly<\/em>, however <em>deceptively<\/em>\u2014\u201cwith praying for my own comfort?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019m sick. Heal me, God.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m out of work. Get me a better job.\u201d With this attitude of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> \u201cI need that new car.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes, \u201cI lost my job. Therefore, God has a better one for me.\u201d Now, we all believe Romans 8:28; but does that mean a higher-paying, better-dental-benefits job? I think that\u2019s what we subtly believe sometimes. So, it was on that\u2014that is the heart behind the story. So\u2014and then, it\u2019s packaged\u2014I won\u2019t bore you with what the packaging is, but it\u2019s a lot of fun. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Russ:<\/strong> It\u2019s great. It\u2019s set in\u2014a young man who wants to be a race car driver\u2014and the neglect of a father, who\u2019s so consumed with his business, that he doesn\u2019t take the time with the son. We don\u2019t want to tell you anything else because we want you to go see that one; but we know you won\u2019t because you\u2019ll have us come back and show it to you for free. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was wondering, \u201cWhere does the radio deejay fit into this story?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s just what I\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russ:<\/strong> We, actually, thought you\u2019d be the stock car driver. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019re praying that the film does well and praying that God will use it in the lives of teenage daughters, and their daddies, and families, and maybe, open up some conversations\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brad:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014and maybe, some phone calls and some reconciliation out of this. So, hope folks will go out and see it. And thanks for making great movies that we can enjoy and take our friends to. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould you thank these guys? [Applause] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019ve been listening to the producer and screenwriter\/director of <em>Grace Unplugged<\/em> and Bob Lepine, shamelessly, trying to find a way onto the big screen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [Laughter] One of these days! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let me tell you something, folks [Laughter]\u2014he fits as the stock car driver. I\u2019ve been in the car with him, and it\u2019s real. [Laughter] It\u2019s real. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Typecasting, at that point. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I did not have a helmet, and there was not a roll bar. It was\u2014it was a rental car\u2014a rent-a-dent\u2014and he ran over the curb! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It is encouraging to see guys who are taking risks, and who are going out and trying to make great movies that you can take anybody to\u2014that have a redemptive message\u2014that present the Gospel clearly in them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. And I think these are the kinds of movies, certainly, that the community of faith\u2014followers of Christ\u2014ought to support as it comes to your community. Invite some friends\u2014some families. Go see this movie. You\u2019re not going to be disappointed. It\u2019s got a great message\u2014a great theme. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, use it like we did our movies\u2014our kids would roll their eyes back in their heads: \u201cOh, Dad! We\u2019re not going to go get a Coke<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and a pizza, now, and talk about the <em>theme and the worldview<\/em>: \u2018What are they talking about? What does it represent?\u2019\u201d You did the same thing, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I did. You\u2019re right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I know you did! [Laughter] Absolutely; but take them out and talk about that.
