So, each time I pulled forward, his finger just thrust in the air, like a parody of an orator. He didn\u2019t cry\u2014I cried! I yelled out. My dad came running with pliers, and a Band-Aid<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, and calming words\u2014hopefully, avoiding litigation, in that moment\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> I tell people that\u2014in that moment\u2014I realized that the Lord was speaking to me because I heard Him say, clearly, \u201cYou are a fisher of men.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s a bad story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> That\u2019s a bad, bad story. [Laughter] Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But the reality is that God\u2019s assignment, to each one of us, is to be \u201cfishers of men\u201d. I think of the motorcycle gang couple\u2014who were still processing their own issues\u2014but they had found a little bit of bread. They went back to the motorcycle group and said: \u201cHey! We\u2019ve got to share with you what we\u2019ve found, even though our marriage is still messed up.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> There is this incredibly broken paradigm, I believe, in Christendom\u2014which is this: \u201cI need to have arrived before I can turn around and help somebody else on their journey.\u201d It\u2019s a false premise because, I believe, on this side of eternity, none of us will have ever arrived. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> All we can do\u2014the very best we can do\u2014is simply invite someone else to journey with us as we journey with Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But you have met people, Mike, whose lives are messy\u2014really messy. Would you say to some group of really messy people, \u201cOkay, for you\u2014you need to get some of this mess cleaned up before you can be useful for the King.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> My advice to everyone is to connect with Jesus and walk with Jesus. As you walk with Jesus, invite others to come with you because it\u2019s in that process, where He\u2019s doing the work of sanctification. He\u2019s doing the work of cleaning us\u2014always; right?\u2014of restoring us, building relationship with Him, understanding His Word. All of these things are happening all of the time, simultaneously.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You see, this gets back to the motorcycle people in Colorado Springs because, as I remember the story, when they contacted you, later, to tell you about coming to faith at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> and about leading a HomeBuilders group, the thing that they said was, \u201cThe best thing we did for our marriage was to lead a HomeBuilders group.\u201d In other words, they got better as they <em>did<\/em> ministry. One of the ways God cleans up the mess of our lives is by getting us in the game, helping others; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Absolutely. You two can attest to this\u2014who learns the most when you guys prepare a sermon and give it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That would be us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019re the ones who are constantly preaching to ourselves. We\u2019re constantly <em>learning<\/em> in the process of our own ministry. So, we have to recognize that\u2019s true in others\u2019 lives, as well. I think Paul is an example of somebody who really got that because he was launching people into ministry\u2014Day One. You know, \u201cHear the Gospel,\u201d and then, \u201cBe released to it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Paul said: \u201cI didn\u2019t just impart the Gospel to you. I imparted my life.\u201d Paul had lived a rugged life. He\u2019d been a part of stoning Christians. He was part of the opposition. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, if there was anybody who could have felt disqualified to be used\u2014in fact, I think I would put it a little stronger than how you said it. I think you said it was a misconception\u2014or it was false. I would use a little stronger terminology. I think, if you hear a voice saying, \u201cGod can\u2019t use you,\u201d that\u2019s a <em>lie<\/em>\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because we do have an enemy who is the <em>author<\/em> of lies. He speaks into people\u2019s minds saying: \u201cYou\u2019ve fouled up! You\u2019ve had an abortion,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ve had premarital sex,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ve committed adultery,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ve stolen, \u201cYou\u2019ve done\u2014this or that. God could never use you!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reality is that, no matter at what stage of the sanctification process He does use you, it\u2019s all still very broken.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s the One Who has poured His glory, as you talk about in the book, into a vessel\u2014a cracked pot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> You mentioned that verse from Ephesians, earlier, about how God is creating a masterpiece with our lives. The analogy, I use in my church, is we\u2019re the ones who think that we disqualify ourselves by splattering black paint on a canvas\u2014representing our murderous selfishness\u2014or, you know, red paint\u2014representing our jealous covetousness\u2014or teal paint\u2014representing our horrible style choices of the 1980\u2019s. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know\u2014all of these horrific colors that we\u2019re splashing on the canvas\u2014not realizing that that\u2019s simply the backdrop from which God begins to create an absolute masterpiece with our lives. It\u2019s in our most broken and humble places that I believe the glory of God can shine the <em>most<\/em> clearly through. It requires us to really surrender to Him and begin the journey of obedience with Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let\u2019s talk about how somebody can begin to find out where God wants to put them on the playing field. You talk about God speaking to us. We need to unpack that a bit because you, as a pastor, have had people come up to you, at church, and say, \u201cPastor, God told me to divorce my husband.\u201d They want out of this marriage\u2014or they want to go commit this sin or that\u2014they can find a way to justify it. They use God to do it. Explain how a person can know that he or she is hearing from God. Then, let\u2019s talk about how to specifically know where to get into the game.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> In ministry for 22 years, I have seen a lot of that misconception. I\u2019ve seen a lot of that abuse of using\u2014sort of\u2014well, I call it: \u201cPlaying the God card,\u201d: \u201cHey, God told me this!\u201d How can you argue with that because, if God really did tell them\u2014you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would just tell you that we do spend a lot of time unpacking it. One of the first things I will say is: \u201cGod\u2019s call will never contradict God\u2019s Word. God has already called us, generally, revealing His general call through the Word that we have today.\u201d Knowing the Word\u2014investing your time in the Word, meditating on the Word\u2014that will be a great first step to discerning God\u2019s call in your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The Scripture is our plumb line for where we start. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Not an experience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Absolutely, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Although, God does, as you shared, speak to us through experiences that we have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> He does speak through experiences. He does, I think, speak directly into our hearts, as well. I believe that the Spirit of God is given to every single believer, dwelling within us. I would confess to you, and to all of those listening today, that I have never heard the audible voice of the Lord; but I have felt His prompting. I have felt His leading. There are times when I can\u2019t describe why I would be pressed to reach out to a person, or to make a phone call, or to write a letter; and yet, I know, because of confirmation from the other end, that God was absolutely directing that moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I would have to say, it all has to fall under the general call of Scripture: We are called to love God. We\u2019re called to love people. We\u2019re called to serve the world. Underneath that general umbrella, I believe that God really does want a relationship with each one of us that\u2019s intimate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think one of the words of caution, here, is that when you have that sense\u2014that prompting\u2014that, \u201cGee, is the Lord really leading me in this direction?\u201d \u2014God\u2019s Word is certain. Those promptings are subjective and, maybe, less certain. That doesn\u2019t mean that you don\u2019t respond to the prompting. It just means that you don\u2019t presume that the prompting is as authoritative in your life as God\u2019s Word is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Absolutely. Like I said, \u201cIt would need to submit to God\u2019s Word.\u201d For example, if you\u2019re in a marriage relationship\u2014if you\u2019re being prompted or led to exit the marriage, or to flirt with somebody else, or to whatever that somehow discounts that marriage relationship\u2014you can be certain that\u2019s <em>not<\/em> the Holy Spirit of God working. That\u2019s, actually, the enemy prompting us and urging us. I would just say that\u2019s a temptation. That\u2019s not a prompting of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that\u2019s where\u2014when you talk about a plumb line\u2014that\u2019s where I would always come back to the Scripture. However, inside a marriage relationship, I believe that God is, actually, prompting us and leading us often. I just think we are not listening to Him. I mean that in terms of gift-giving, and honoring spouse, and how to serve\u2014not just to do my own thing\u2014sort of slipping into duty and role\u2014but rather to be active and proactive, with the Lord: \u201cHow do I <em>actively <\/em>connect with my wife today?\u201d \u201cHow do I <em>actively <\/em>connect with my husband today?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s where God really is speaking to us, and prompting us, and leading us in good pathways. That\u2019s the \u201chinds\u2019 feet in high places\u201dthat I would point to\u2014of God\u2019s care and call for each one of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know how to do marriage and family apart from that quiet voice of God. I love the Scriptures. I\u2019m going to embrace the Scriptures because it gives me my assignment\u2014my marching orders\u2014how I\u2019m to obey\u2014but I\u2019m going to tell you something\u2014there were times, as a parent, when we were raising four teenagers, at one time\u2014where it was like\u2014if I hadn\u2019t had the prompting of God to go inspect something\u2014if He hadn\u2019t helped me catch my kids\u2014[Laughter] I would pray that prayer all the time, Mike!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara and I would say, as we went to bed at night: \u201cOh, Lord, God, we know this kid is up to something! We pray that You, as the Hound of Heaven, would chase him down and You help us catch him so he doesn\u2019t get too far\u201d\u2014or, \u201cshe gets too far away.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I think God\u2014I\u2019ve said it many times\u2014He feels sorry for the prayer of a helpless parent because He shows up in that moment. Circumstances do occur! I mean, He sets them up!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> I have no doubt about that. That\u2019s an amazing thing\u2014the revelation of God. You know\u2014how, all of a sudden\u2014texts will pop up on the cell phone. You\u2019re like: \u201cWait! Who are these texts from?\u201d\u2014you know?\u00a0 And then the kid\u2019s trying to hide the phone\u2014there it is! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Mike, you talk about people going rogue in their Christian life\u2014what do you mean by that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Well, I point to the example of Jonah. I point to him, actually, throughout this entire book, simply because he is a guy who is a beautiful picture of mess, all the way through. You know, the general picture of Jonah is he\u2019s a mess, at the beginning. When he hears God call, he runs from it and winds up in a bigger mess of his own making. He repents for what amounts to maybe 20 minutes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe gives the world\u2019s worst message; you know? \u201cForty days and Nineveh will be overturned.\u201d It\u2019s literally the worst message we have recorded in Scripture. My buddy, Keith, says, \u201cThe only good thing about it is its length;\u201d right? \u201cIf you can\u2019t be good, be quick.\u201d [Laughter] And then, he sees an incredible return on that obedience. We\u2019ve got this incredible repentance of this entire city\u2014a people group.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd yet, at the end, he is still a mess. That\u2019s sort of a great foundation for what I\u2019m talking about. God worked through Jonah\u2019s failure because, as he was running from God, everyone on the ship ends up praising Him. Then, God worked through Jonah\u2019s obedience because, when Jonah was doing what God told him to do, there was this incredible return upon investment. Even at the end of the book, when Jonah\u2019s all upset because of God\u2019s grace, God is still teaching Jonah and revealing His glory, in the midst of his mess.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So the \u201cgoing rogue\u201d is that running away from\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Thank you. Yes, exactly\u2014the \u201cgoing rogue\u201d is thinking that, \u201cEven though I\u2019ve heard from God, I\u2019m going to do my own thing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Mike, there\u2019s something that you do, in your book, that really helps the reader learn how to participate with God, in His call. It\u2019s just five steps\u2014very simple. What I\u2019d like you to do is just tweet\u2014like 144 characters\u2014and we\u2019ll not hold you to that, really\u2014but I would like you to just tweet on each one of them. What does it mean? For instance, Step 1: \u201cGet Quiet\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s so hard for us to get quiet in our daily lives because of the pace at which so many of us are running constantly\u2014the bombardment of media, radio, internet, etc. In order to begin the process of hearing God, it really begins with prioritizing this in your own life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGetting quiet is just what it sounds like. It might be that you need to set aside 20 minutes \/ a half hour, in the morning, before the kids get up. It might mean that, after everybody\u2019s in bed, you spend some time in the evening. It might mean that, for you, you arrange for some childcare to spend half a day with the Lord. It\u2019s just the idea of prioritizing listening to God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I like what you say, at the end of this section, in your book. You say, \u201cYou must try to flee the bonds of normalcy in order to quiet your mind.\u201d I don\u2019t think that comes naturally in this culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStep 2: \u201cInvite God\u2019s Spirit\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> It\u2019s just beginning with an invitation: \u201cJesus, I want to hear from You. Lord, I want to hear what it is that You have for my life. I want to know what Your will is for me, personally.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Step 3\u2014again, we\u2019re talking about how you determine what God is calling you to do\u2014you say: \u201cTake a Personal Inventory\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. The premise is that you are who you are because God is making that masterpiece out of you. Your life is the masterpiece that He\u2019s making. So, know who you are\u2014know what your strengths are, know what your giftings are, know what your talents are and your passions are\u2014because where the world\u2019s deep need and your deep passion meet is where your deep joy will be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Step 4: \u201cIdentify Your Dreams\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> You have to know what it is that you\u2019re interested in\u2014what makes your heart come alive. The questions are: \u201cIf you didn\u2019t have limitations in your life, financially\u2014if you weren\u2019t bound by circumstance\u2014what do you feel like God would be calling you into?\u201d so that you understand what it is that, \u201cMan! If I could really score big in my life, and bring Him great glory, what would that look like?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s a passage, I think, in Philippians, where Paul writes, \u201cFor it is He who is at work within you both to will\u201d \u2014that is to create the desire\u2014\u201cand to work\u201d\u2014that\u2019s to create the opportunity to do it\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201caccording to His own good pleasure.\u201d That\u2019s what you\u2019re talking about here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStep 5: \u201cSet Your Goals and Then Submit Them to God\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> This is an exercise I do with great regularity. I actually walk through a goal-setting exercise, but I always end that goal-setting exercise with truly submitting them to the Lord. The Lord, I believe, is the One Who prompts me and leads me to actually make these goals for ministry in my life; but I always want to submit them because I <em>never<\/em> want to get ahead of the Lord. I don\u2019t just want to ask God to bless what I\u2019m doing. I want to sense what He\u2019s already blessing and then get into that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ll tell you something I like about this list. This is not only a great list for adults\u2014young people, who are starting out their lives\u2014but this is a great list to begin to train your children to know how to make a good decision. One of my concerns about the next generation, that is being raised today, is that we, as parents, are not doing a good job engaging them around taking the Bible\u2014taking circumstances\u2014and then, taking our children\u2019s hand in ours and teaching them how to put their hand in God\u2019s hand so that they end up\u2014at the end of the day\u2014making a decision that is filled with wisdom and not foolishness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> What we\u2019re trying to do is\u2014we are trying to train our children; correct? We don\u2019t want to just make the decision for them. We want to help them to make the decision for themselves.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, and these five steps, I think, would be great to begin to walk your child through as they move into the teenage years about: \u201cHow do you make a decision about how you invest your life?\u201d \u201c\u2026what you give your time to?\u201d It\u2019s all about being still, listening to God, taking an inventory, and then, ultimately, committing your way to Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, you have to start with the premise that, no matter what\u2019s going on in your life\u2014where you are, how messy things are\u2014God has a purpose. He wants to use you to advance the Kingdom. I think a lot of people don\u2019t start with that premise. They think, \u201cNo, I\u2019m not sure that God can use me,\u201d or, \u201cThings are too messy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s the point of what you\u2019ve written, Mike, in your book, <em>Glorious Mess. <\/em>I would just encourage our listeners\u2014if you find yourself discouraged\u2014really wondering, \u201cCan God use me?\u201d\u2014get a copy of the book. <\/strong>Oww!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> With my first cast, I had nabbed a sixty-pounder!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was so startled that he didn\u2019t say anything\u2014he was so startled. So, each time I pulled forward, his finger just thrust in the air, like a parody of an orator. He didn\u2019t cry\u2014I cried! I yelled out. My dad came running with pliers, and a Band-Aid<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, and calming words\u2014hopefully, avoiding litigation, in that moment\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> I tell people that\u2014in that moment\u2014I realized that the Lord was speaking to me because I heard Him say, clearly, \u201cYou are a fisher of men.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s a bad story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> That\u2019s a bad, bad story. [Laughter] Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But the reality is that God\u2019s assignment, to each one of us, is to be \u201cfishers of men\u201d. I think of the motorcycle gang couple\u2014who were still processing their own issues\u2014but they had found a little bit of bread. They went back to the motorcycle group and said: \u201cHey! We\u2019ve got to share with you what we\u2019ve found, even though our marriage is still messed up.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> There is this incredibly broken paradigm, I believe, in Christendom\u2014which is this: \u201cI need to have arrived before I can turn around and help somebody else on their journey.\u201d It\u2019s a false premise because, I believe, on this side of eternity, none of us will have ever arrived. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> All we can do\u2014the very best we can do\u2014is simply invite someone else to journey with us as we journey with Jesus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But you have met people, Mike, whose lives are messy\u2014really messy. Would you say to some group of really messy people, \u201cOkay, for you\u2014you need to get some of this mess cleaned up before you can be useful for the King.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> My advice to everyone is to connect with Jesus and walk with Jesus. As you walk with Jesus, invite others to come with you because it\u2019s in that process, where He\u2019s doing the work of sanctification. He\u2019s doing the work of cleaning us\u2014always; right?\u2014of restoring us, building relationship with Him, understanding His Word. All of these things are happening all of the time, simultaneously.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You see, this gets back to the motorcycle people in Colorado Springs because, as I remember the story, when they contacted you, later, to tell you about coming to faith at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> and about leading a HomeBuilders group, the thing that they said was, \u201cThe best thing we did for our marriage was to lead a HomeBuilders group.\u201d In other words, they got better as they <em>did<\/em> ministry. One of the ways God cleans up the mess of our lives is by getting us in the game, helping others; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Absolutely. You two can attest to this\u2014who learns the most when you guys prepare a sermon and give it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That would be us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019re the ones who are constantly preaching to ourselves. We\u2019re constantly <em>learning<\/em> in the process of our own ministry. So, we have to recognize that\u2019s true in others\u2019 lives, as well. I think Paul is an example of somebody who really got that because he was launching people into ministry\u2014Day One. You know, \u201cHear the Gospel,\u201d and then, \u201cBe released to it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Paul said: \u201cI didn\u2019t just impart the Gospel to you. I imparted my life.\u201d Paul had lived a rugged life. He\u2019d been a part of stoning Christians. He was part of the opposition. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, if there was anybody who could have felt disqualified to be used\u2014in fact, I think I would put it a little stronger than how you said it. I think you said it was a misconception\u2014or it was false. I would use a little stronger terminology. I think, if you hear a voice saying, \u201cGod can\u2019t use you,\u201d that\u2019s a <em>lie<\/em>\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because we do have an enemy who is the <em>author<\/em> of lies. He speaks into people\u2019s minds saying: \u201cYou\u2019ve fouled up! You\u2019ve had an abortion,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ve had premarital sex,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ve committed adultery,\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ve stolen, \u201cYou\u2019ve done\u2014this or that. God could never use you!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reality is that, no matter at what stage of the sanctification process He does use you, it\u2019s all still very broken.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He\u2019s the One Who has poured His glory, as you talk about in the book, into a vessel\u2014a cracked pot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> You mentioned that verse from Ephesians, earlier, about how God is creating a masterpiece with our lives. The analogy, I use in my church, is we\u2019re the ones who think that we disqualify ourselves by splattering black paint on a canvas\u2014representing our murderous selfishness\u2014or, you know, red paint\u2014representing our jealous covetousness\u2014or teal paint\u2014representing our horrible style choices of the 1980\u2019s. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know\u2014all of these horrific colors that we\u2019re splashing on the canvas\u2014not realizing that that\u2019s simply the backdrop from which God begins to create an absolute masterpiece with our lives. It\u2019s in our most broken and humble places that I believe the glory of God can shine the <em>most<\/em> clearly through. It requires us to really surrender to Him and begin the journey of obedience with Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Let\u2019s talk about how somebody can begin to find out where God wants to put them on the playing field. You talk about God speaking to us. We need to unpack that a bit because you, as a pastor, have had people come up to you, at church, and say, \u201cPastor, God told me to divorce my husband.\u201d They want out of this marriage\u2014or they want to go commit this sin or that\u2014they can find a way to justify it. They use God to do it. Explain how a person can know that he or she is hearing from God. Then, let\u2019s talk about how to specifically know where to get into the game.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> In ministry for 22 years, I have seen a lot of that misconception. I\u2019ve seen a lot of that abuse of using\u2014sort of\u2014well, I call it: \u201cPlaying the God card,\u201d: \u201cHey, God told me this!\u201d How can you argue with that because, if God really did tell them\u2014you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would just tell you that we do spend a lot of time unpacking it. One of the first things I will say is: \u201cGod\u2019s call will never contradict God\u2019s Word. God has already called us, generally, revealing His general call through the Word that we have today.\u201d Knowing the Word\u2014investing your time in the Word, meditating on the Word\u2014that will be a great first step to discerning God\u2019s call in your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The Scripture is our plumb line for where we start. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Not an experience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Absolutely, yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Although, God does, as you shared, speak to us through experiences that we have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> He does speak through experiences. He does, I think, speak directly into our hearts, as well. I believe that the Spirit of God is given to every single believer, dwelling within us. I would confess to you, and to all of those listening today, that I have never heard the audible voice of the Lord; but I have felt His prompting. I have felt His leading. There are times when I can\u2019t describe why I would be pressed to reach out to a person, or to make a phone call, or to write a letter; and yet, I know, because of confirmation from the other end, that God was absolutely directing that moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I would have to say, it all has to fall under the general call of Scripture: We are called to love God. We\u2019re called to love people. We\u2019re called to serve the world. Underneath that general umbrella, I believe that God really does want a relationship with each one of us that\u2019s intimate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I think one of the words of caution, here, is that when you have that sense\u2014that prompting\u2014that, \u201cGee, is the Lord really leading me in this direction?\u201d \u2014God\u2019s Word is certain. Those promptings are subjective and, maybe, less certain. That doesn\u2019t mean that you don\u2019t respond to the prompting. It just means that you don\u2019t presume that the prompting is as authoritative in your life as God\u2019s Word is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Absolutely. Like I said, \u201cIt would need to submit to God\u2019s Word.\u201d For example, if you\u2019re in a marriage relationship\u2014if you\u2019re being prompted or led to exit the marriage, or to flirt with somebody else, or to whatever that somehow discounts that marriage relationship\u2014you can be certain that\u2019s <em>not<\/em> the Holy Spirit of God working. That\u2019s, actually, the enemy prompting us and urging us. I would just say that\u2019s a temptation. That\u2019s not a prompting of God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that\u2019s where\u2014when you talk about a plumb line\u2014that\u2019s where I would always come back to the Scripture. However, inside a marriage relationship, I believe that God is, actually, prompting us and leading us often. I just think we are not listening to Him. I mean that in terms of gift-giving, and honoring spouse, and how to serve\u2014not just to do my own thing\u2014sort of slipping into duty and role\u2014but rather to be active and proactive, with the Lord: \u201cHow do I <em>actively <\/em>connect with my wife today?\u201d \u201cHow do I <em>actively <\/em>connect with my husband today?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s where God really is speaking to us, and prompting us, and leading us in good pathways. That\u2019s the \u201chinds\u2019 feet in high places\u201dthat I would point to\u2014of God\u2019s care and call for each one of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t know how to do marriage and family apart from that quiet voice of God. I love the Scriptures. I\u2019m going to embrace the Scriptures because it gives me my assignment\u2014my marching orders\u2014how I\u2019m to obey\u2014but I\u2019m going to tell you something\u2014there were times, as a parent, when we were raising four teenagers, at one time\u2014where it was like\u2014if I hadn\u2019t had the prompting of God to go inspect something\u2014if He hadn\u2019t helped me catch my kids\u2014[Laughter] I would pray that prayer all the time, Mike!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara and I would say, as we went to bed at night: \u201cOh, Lord, God, we know this kid is up to something! We pray that You, as the Hound of Heaven, would chase him down and You help us catch him so he doesn\u2019t get too far\u201d\u2014or, \u201cshe gets too far away.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I think God\u2014I\u2019ve said it many times\u2014He feels sorry for the prayer of a helpless parent because He shows up in that moment. Circumstances do occur! I mean, He sets them up!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> I have no doubt about that. That\u2019s an amazing thing\u2014the revelation of God. You know\u2014how, all of a sudden\u2014texts will pop up on the cell phone. You\u2019re like: \u201cWait! Who are these texts from?\u201d\u2014you know?\u00a0 And then the kid\u2019s trying to hide the phone\u2014there it is! [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Mike, you talk about people going rogue in their Christian life\u2014what do you mean by that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Well, I point to the example of Jonah. I point to him, actually, throughout this entire book, simply because he is a guy who is a beautiful picture of mess, all the way through. You know, the general picture of Jonah is he\u2019s a mess, at the beginning. When he hears God call, he runs from it and winds up in a bigger mess of his own making. He repents for what amounts to maybe 20 minutes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe gives the world\u2019s worst message; you know? \u201cForty days and Nineveh will be overturned.\u201d It\u2019s literally the worst message we have recorded in Scripture. My buddy, Keith, says, \u201cThe only good thing about it is its length;\u201d right? \u201cIf you can\u2019t be good, be quick.\u201d [Laughter] And then, he sees an incredible return on that obedience. We\u2019ve got this incredible repentance of this entire city\u2014a people group.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd yet, at the end, he is still a mess. That\u2019s sort of a great foundation for what I\u2019m talking about. God worked through Jonah\u2019s failure because, as he was running from God, everyone on the ship ends up praising Him. Then, God worked through Jonah\u2019s obedience because, when Jonah was doing what God told him to do, there was this incredible return upon investment. Even at the end of the book, when Jonah\u2019s all upset because of God\u2019s grace, God is still teaching Jonah and revealing His glory, in the midst of his mess.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So the \u201cgoing rogue\u201d is that running away from\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Thank you. Yes, exactly\u2014the \u201cgoing rogue\u201d is thinking that, \u201cEven though I\u2019ve heard from God, I\u2019m going to do my own thing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Mike, there\u2019s something that you do, in your book, that really helps the reader learn how to participate with God, in His call. It\u2019s just five steps\u2014very simple. What I\u2019d like you to do is just tweet\u2014like 144 characters\u2014and we\u2019ll not hold you to that, really\u2014but I would like you to just tweet on each one of them. What does it mean? For instance, Step 1: \u201cGet Quiet\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Well, it\u2019s so hard for us to get quiet in our daily lives because of the pace at which so many of us are running constantly\u2014the bombardment of media, radio, internet, etc. In order to begin the process of hearing God, it really begins with prioritizing this in your own life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGetting quiet is just what it sounds like. It might be that you need to set aside 20 minutes \/ a half hour, in the morning, before the kids get up. It might mean that, after everybody\u2019s in bed, you spend some time in the evening. It might mean that, for you, you arrange for some childcare to spend half a day with the Lord. It\u2019s just the idea of prioritizing listening to God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I like what you say, at the end of this section, in your book. You say, \u201cYou must try to flee the bonds of normalcy in order to quiet your mind.\u201d I don\u2019t think that comes naturally in this culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStep 2: \u201cInvite God\u2019s Spirit\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> It\u2019s just beginning with an invitation: \u201cJesus, I want to hear from You. Lord, I want to hear what it is that You have for my life. I want to know what Your will is for me, personally.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Step 3\u2014again, we\u2019re talking about how you determine what God is calling you to do\u2014you say: \u201cTake a Personal Inventory\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> That\u2019s right. The premise is that you are who you are because God is making that masterpiece out of you. Your life is the masterpiece that He\u2019s making. So, know who you are\u2014know what your strengths are, know what your giftings are, know what your talents are and your passions are\u2014because where the world\u2019s deep need and your deep passion meet is where your deep joy will be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Step 4: \u201cIdentify Your Dreams\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> You have to know what it is that you\u2019re interested in\u2014what makes your heart come alive. The questions are: \u201cIf you didn\u2019t have limitations in your life, financially\u2014if you weren\u2019t bound by circumstance\u2014what do you feel like God would be calling you into?\u201d so that you understand what it is that, \u201cMan! If I could really score big in my life, and bring Him great glory, what would that look like?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s a passage, I think, in Philippians, where Paul writes, \u201cFor it is He who is at work within you both to will\u201d \u2014that is to create the desire\u2014\u201cand to work\u201d\u2014that\u2019s to create the opportunity to do it\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014\u201caccording to His own good pleasure.\u201d That\u2019s what you\u2019re talking about here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStep 5: \u201cSet Your Goals and Then Submit Them to God\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> This is an exercise I do with great regularity. I actually walk through a goal-setting exercise, but I always end that goal-setting exercise with truly submitting them to the Lord. The Lord, I believe, is the One Who prompts me and leads me to actually make these goals for ministry in my life; but I always want to submit them because I <em>never<\/em> want to get ahead of the Lord. I don\u2019t just want to ask God to bless what I\u2019m doing. I want to sense what He\u2019s already blessing and then get into that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ll tell you something I like about this list. This is not only a great list for adults\u2014young people, who are starting out their lives\u2014but this is a great list to begin to train your children to know how to make a good decision. One of my concerns about the next generation, that is being raised today, is that we, as parents, are not doing a good job engaging them around taking the Bible\u2014taking circumstances\u2014and then, taking our children\u2019s hand in ours and teaching them how to put their hand in God\u2019s hand so that they end up\u2014at the end of the day\u2014making a decision that is filled with wisdom and not foolishness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mike:<\/strong> What we\u2019re trying to do is\u2014we are trying to train our children; correct? We don\u2019t want to just make the decision for them. We want to help them to make the decision for themselves.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, and these five steps, I think, would be great to begin to walk your child through as they move into the teenage years about: \u201cHow do you make a decision about how you invest your life?\u201d \u201c\u2026what you give your time to?\u201d It\u2019s all about being still, listening to God, taking an inventory, and then, ultimately, committing your way to Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, you have to start with the premise that, no matter what\u2019s going on in your life\u2014where you are, how messy things are\u2014God has a purpose. He wants to use you to advance the Kingdom. I think a lot of people don\u2019t start with that premise. They think, \u201cNo, I\u2019m not sure that God can use me,\u201d or, \u201cThings are too messy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s the point of what you\u2019ve written, Mike, in your book, <em>Glorious Mess. <\/em>I would just encourage our listeners\u2014if you find yourself discouraged\u2014really wondering, \u201cCan God use me?\u201d\u2014get a copy of the book.
