Dennis Rainey says, \u201cYou\u2019ll be surprised at where the peer pressure is coming from and whether it is good or bad.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The most negative peer pressure we found\u2014sometimes, it came from young people in the youth group. Kids who have all the trappings of Christianity\u2014and they\u2019re smiling at you when they come to your house. \u201cOh, yes, sir, Mr. Rainey. Oh, yes!\u201d Then, they tell my daughter: \u201cYou don\u2019t need to obey that! You just need to break out! You\u2019re just caged like a bird!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, May 21<sup>st<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine. It\u2019s not a question of whether your children will face peer pressure; it\u2019s a question of what they\u2019ll do with it and how you\u2019ll prepare them for it. We\u2019ll talk about that today. Stay tuned. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition. I think moms and dads are maybe not as fully aware as they ought to be of how much real danger there is for young people as they go through their teenage years. Thirteen to nineteen is a pretty dangerous season of life; isn\u2019t it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt about it. What happens is they start pushing us out\u2014around age 11, 12, 13\u2014at a time when the world is pulling them in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And every young man \/ young woman needs a mother and a father to be able to guide them and walk through these perilous years\u2014these teenage years\u2014with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And even if you live out in rural South Dakota\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Because of media, Bob, I\u2019m telling, you there\u2019s an onslaught coming out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; but you don\u2019t have a TV in your house, and you limit internet access to 15 minutes a day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, that helps. That helps, but they\u2019re still going to have peers. Ultimately, they\u2019re going to rub shoulders with people who offer them alternative lifestyles. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And the changes that are going on in their own life are enough\u2014that if they didn\u2019t have a peer group to deal with, and they didn\u2019t have the internet, and they didn\u2019t have TV\u2014just the fact that they are changing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They lack confidence; and they aren\u2019t sure who they are\u2014either as a young man or a young woman. What happens is they start taking their cues from their peers. Whether we like it or not, peers are number one during this period. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You got a real sense of this years ago when you taught a sixth-grade Sunday school class in a local church, and you did that for more than a decade. But when it came right down to it, you really wanted moms and dads to be the ones going through this material with their kids\u2014not the Sunday school teacher. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t want to teach other peoples\u2019 kids. I want them to teach their own kids. Moms and dads don\u2019t have a problem with someone stepping in, for a few moments, and talking straight to their son or daughter if\u2014and this is a big if\u2014<em>if<\/em> that voice is setting them up as the authority. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, so, we\u2014more than a decade ago\u2014put together the very first <em>Passport2Purity<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> weekend\u2014five sessions that a mom or a dad could take a son or a daughter through. They listen to some teaching from you and from Barbara, and they get a chance to interact\u2014to do some projects together. Over the years, tens of thousands of families have done that. How many of you\u2014if you could have your sixth-grader experience everything you experienced in adolescence and receive the same sex education that you received from the same type of person\u2014how many of you would want your 12-year-old to replicate what education you had and the experiences you had? Hold your hands up\u2014one. Isn\u2019t that interesting? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe question is\u2014if we don\u2019t go on the offensive, what we ultimately do\u2014and I don\u2019t like the picture of this, whatsoever\u2014but it\u2019s like we pick our child up, and we come to the fence\u2014where the culture reigns on the other side\u2014and we just open the gate, and let them go through to be preyed upon by the culture. Now, here\u2019s the bad news. No matter how good a job you do, you\u2019re not going to be able to do it perfectly. You\u2019re not going to be able to head off all evil that tries to prey upon your child\u2014your son, your daughter\u2019s life. But I think it\u2019s why God gave children parents. It\u2019s why we must wake up in the morning, with the burden of this Book\u2014of teaching our children how to love God, how to walk with Him, how to get in this Book\u2014let the Book get in them\u2014and how, in all of that\u2014how they can serve Him with all their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, here\u2019s the good news: We have some help for you. <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> is a guided- tour that you lead your child through the traps of peer pressure\u2014the talk, the sex talk\u2014setting boundaries\u2014crossing the date-line. Here\u2019s a preview from Dennis Rainey. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There are going to be interviews with older teenagers. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong> What are some of the challenges that you guys have faced during your teen years? [Silence] No challenges? Life\u2019s been a breeze. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Teenager:<\/strong> Oh, yes! It\u2019s been perfect! No problems at all. [Laughter] It isn\u2019t me we\u2019re talking about. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re going to laugh at some fun stories. [Random noises] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s going to be object lessons: How many of you believe me when I tell you that what\u2019s in this sack is dangerous? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what? There is more than likely going to be a surprise or two. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Child:<\/strong> Yes, he just taped a package to the bottom of the kid\u2019s tube side. What if it\u2019s a bomb?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Man:<\/strong> Sweat glands, do you copy? Sweat glands, do you copy? Sweat glands! Sweat glands! Come in! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Child:<\/strong> It\u2019s embarrassing enough to be standing in front of a bunch of\u2014oh my word! There\u2019s Todd! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mom:<\/strong> Todd. Who\u2019s Todd? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Child:<\/strong> As in Todd Jones from school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mom:<\/strong> So? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Child:<\/strong> So! Quick, hide! Get down, Mom! Right here, behind the\u2014Ahh! [Scuffling sound]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[End of Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, when I taught this to my sixth-grade Sunday school class, one of the ways I taught it was using the image of traps. Proverbs talks about a snare. I want to show you three of them that, really, <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> is built around. It touches on more than just these three, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first one is found in First Corinthians 15:33. It says, \u201cDo not be deceived bad company corrupts good morals.\u201d I\u2019m going to ask you to come up. This is a rat trap. You can trap that one and tell us what that one is all about. [Click of a trap]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Man:<\/strong> Dating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Dating is all about setting some limits\u2014setting some understandings about when they\u2019re going to be able to date, who they\u2019ll be able to date, how they\u2019ll be able to date, at what age or what maturity, what the guidelines are, about if they\u2019re ready to date. And there is, actually, in the <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> kit\u2014there is a contract that they sign: \u201cI agree to wait until you say I am ready to date.\u201d They sign it and date it, and you witness it. It\u2019s a great moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomeone else come up and set up another trap. Who\u2019d like to? Ma\u2019am, come on up here. This one, here, is one of the most dangerous little traps I\u2019ve got up here. [Click of a trap] And what is it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Woman:<\/strong> Peer pressure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Peer pressure is back to First Corinthians 15:33. There\u2019s a reason why this is this quick one because here is the great lie that occurs\u2014that the kids that your kids are running around with are coming from families that have the same values, and have the same beliefs, and the same standards that you have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe junior high years are the fork in the road, where you begin to find out what kind of peer pressure our kid\u2019s friends would have on them. And you know what one of the most negative peer pressure we found was\u2014sometimes, it came from young people in the youth group. Kids who have all the trappings of Christianity\u2014and they\u2019re smiling at you when they come to your house. \u201cOh, yes, sir, Mr. Rainey.\u201d Then, they tell my daughter: \u201cYou don\u2019t need to obey that! You just need to break out! You\u2019re just caged like a bird!\u201d You\u2019ll hear that story in <em>Passport2Purity<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomeone else come on up and do this last one. You can go right up here and just keep your distance. [Click of a trap] What\u2019s it say? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Woman:<\/strong> Sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sex. Actually, when I taught this in my class\u2014I\u2019m going to show you the trap I used. [Clanging noises] This is an antique bear trap. It takes three men to set it. I have had kids come up, and they would look at that, and they\u2019d set that off. Then, all of a sudden, get the point. They are about to head off into adolescence, where there all these traps being set for them; and they better know what their boundaries are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to go all the way out to the end because, really, <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> is talking about preparing your child for life and preparing them for the ultimate commitments in life\u2014like marriage. I want you to hear about a couple who made some decisions and made some commitments that paid off as they moved toward marriage. Listen to this couple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Samuel:<\/strong> I remember when I was in seventh grade, and I had a girlfriend. There was a lot of pressure from our friends for us to kiss and for us to kind of consummate a seventh-grade relationship\u2014to the extent that her friends would even begin to coordinate kind of like these moments to say, \u201cOkay, now, you can kiss!\u201d And they would go run and hide. They would kind of put us together, and then, they\u2019d go run behind the building or something. That relationship ended pretty shortly thereafter. When I made that decision to, I guess, to not kiss anybody until I knew she was going to be my wife, I didn\u2019t see the point, really, of dating in junior high. I had a lot of friends that were girls. We hung out at lunch, and at football games, and basketball games, and that sort of thing. But she was my last official girlfriend until Stephanie and I got together\u2014until we started dating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met Stephanie at church\u2014at a church plant. I moved to Nashville, Tennessee, after college. She was visiting one of her friends. The first day that I met her: She was coming out of the church office, and I was coming into the church office. Being the new guy to town, I just went up to her, and introduced myself, and said, \u201cHello,\u201d\u2014actually, made fun of her because of the way that she was animated in talking to me. I didn\u2019t know what to do with her animation. So, I just kind of did it back at her, even though that wasn\u2019t me! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> He approached me with confidence, and dignity, and just looked me in the eyes, said, \u201cHello,\u201d introduced himself, and was just funny. I guess him imitating me made me endear him. There was something endearing about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That was memorable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Made it memorable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I got in the car. I was going out of town. I talked about him for the next 45 minutes to my girlfriend and told her: \u201cOkay, this sounds too hokey. I can\u2019t say he\u2019s the guy I\u2019m going to marry, but I want to marry a guy like him.\u201d And\u2014because if I say, \u201cHe\u2019s the guy I\u2019m going to marry,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s just like too movie-ish: [Overly dramatized voice] \u201cHe\u2019s the one! I just know it! Oh, be still my beating heart!\u201d [Laughter] So, I said, \u201ca guy like him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Samuel:<\/strong> Our first date was on New Year\u2019s Eve of that year. Four months later, after we had met, was our first date. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> He just kind of told me: \u201cThis is who I am. This is what I\u2019m about, and I don\u2019t play games. If I\u2019m pursuing a girl, I\u2019m taking everything we do very seriously; and I\u2019m not just doing it for a period of time, or to have fun, or\u2014I\u2019m being very intentional about what I\u2019m doing.\u201d I got butterflies! I was like, \u201cYeah, me!\u201d [Laughter] I felt like, \u201cOkay, this is what a man is like.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[End of Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you and your sixth-grader will listen to that; and I happen to know who that couple is. That\u2019s my son and his wife. All of our kids didn\u2019t make that same commitment, but he did. You\u2019ll listen to more of the whole story on that; but it gives you a point of reference with your child, before they face the raging hormones, to decide, in advance, what they are going to do with the opposite sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, when I concluded my message on the traps with my sixth-grade class\u2014and we opened them up, set all the traps, and we put them up front, scattered around\u2014and there were traps of drugs, pornography. All these traps were set open. I told them, \u201cI wanted to illustrate what they were about to embark on.\u201d I\u2019ll tell you, the visual illustration of this was so powerful that I decided\u2014when I spoke at Promise Keepers at Mile High Stadium in 1995\u2014that I would do it there to conclude my message in front of 51,000 men. Listen to this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid and Jonathan Short are here. They have agreed to help me in a little illustration, here, as we conclude this message. What the guys are setting up right now\u2014on the platform, gentlemen, are traps. The bear trap is right here, in case you can\u2019t see it. They are about to set up some additional traps between where Jonathan is going to stand and where David, his dad, and I are going to stand\u2014at the other end of the stage. Jonathan, in a moment, I\u2019m going to turn and address you, as a young man. Your dad and I\u2014as the older generation\u2014are going to turn to you. We\u2019re going to beckon you to come to maturity. We\u2019re going to call you to come to adulthood. We\u2019re going to call you, as a young man, to come to being a real man\u2014to manhood; alright? When we do that, what I want you to do is I want you to come; okay? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, to illustrate what is taking place in our culture, with the youth of today, guys, I felt like it would be appropriate to blindfold Jonathan. Okay, Jonathan can\u2019t see. Jonathan, you stand right there. Your dad and I are going to go over here. There are traps all over the stage up here, guys, that you can\u2019t see, representing peer pressure, drugs, alcohol, pornography, pride, sexual immorality. About five steps in front of Jonathan is the bear trap\u2014guys, that\u2019s real, and it\u2019s loaded. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJonathan, as a young man, you\u2019re vulnerable, at this age. You know, the blindfold is a picture of adolescence; but it doesn\u2019t quite capture how vulnerable you really are. So, Jonathan, I want you to take your shoes off. Okay, Jonathan, on the count of three, I want you to come to your dad and me, on this side of the stage, representing maturity, adulthood, and manhood. One\u2014two\u2014three. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Jonathan, stop! This is your dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[End of Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, his father came over to the boy. He said, \u201cPut your hands on my shoulder, back here, and stick close because we\u2019re walking around.\u201d They started shuffling through all those. Before the father and the son had made it around all of the 14 traps and made it all the way over here, 51,000 men were giving a standing ovation to that dad and his son, illustrating what should take place. [Clapping] I think they were clapping for two reasons. One, they wished their dads had done it; and they knew\u2014something within their chest\u2014that it was right. And secondly, they were clapping because they knew that was their responsibility with their kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo me, that\u2019s the picture of what you\u2019ve got\u2014whether it\u2019s your son or your daughter\u2014you two, together, are going to take them through some of the most dangerous and perilous traps a human being ever faces, really, with not a lot of training. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019ve been listening to the second part of a message that you shared, recently, Dennis, with parents of 11- and 12-year-olds, sixth-graders, at a local Christian school. I\u2019m just curious\u2014what did the audience\u2014what did the expressions on the faces look like as you were going through all of this? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, they had had a full day. So, they were a bit weary, and they\u2019re raising their families; but they were really listening. They were nodding their heads, taking notes, and they were getting it because I think every parent really wants to do a good job\u2014not only to raise their children up until adolescence\u2014but to prepare their child for adolescence and then go through it with them\u2014experience the ups and downs, the challenges, teach your child how to make a right choice; and if they fail, how to get back up and keep going. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve already shared this week that the head of school at Little Rock Christian Academy, where you shared this message, really wants to see all of the moms and dads of the sixth-graders take their sons and daughters on one of these <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> weekends. He\u2019s pretty much making it mandatory; isn\u2019t he? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He did. He did. I thought it was great leadership. I thought: \u201cWow! That\u2019s pretty cool.\u201d To my knowledge, he\u2019s really not had any pushback. I think the parents recognize: \u201cYou know what? We need to do this.\u201d I think it\u2019s going to be fascinating, not only right now, what happens\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but over the next six years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How does this change a culture? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014all the way through high school\u2014to have over 140 young people who, if they stick together\u2014they have a common vocabulary around a common set of issues that they\u2019re all going to face anyway\u2014but they all have a biblical perspective of those issues; and their parents know, and they know. I think it\u2019s going to be fun, Bob. I really do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and the lines of communication get opened up on a weekend like this. That is where the groundwork is laid for the adolescent years. You don\u2019t have to wait for your school or your church group to get together and all do this, as a coordinated effort. You can do this on your own, with your son or daughter, this summer. face peer pressure during the junior high and high school years\u2014some of it positive, some of it negative. Dennis Rainey says, \u201cYou\u2019ll be surprised at where the peer pressure is coming from and whether it is good or bad.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The most negative peer pressure we found\u2014sometimes, it came from young people in the youth group. Kids who have all the trappings of Christianity\u2014and they\u2019re smiling at you when they come to your house. \u201cOh, yes, sir, Mr. Rainey. Oh, yes!\u201d Then, they tell my daughter: \u201cYou don\u2019t need to obey that! You just need to break out! You\u2019re just caged like a bird!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, May 21<sup>st<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine. It\u2019s not a question of whether your children will face peer pressure; it\u2019s a question of what they\u2019ll do with it and how you\u2019ll prepare them for it. We\u2019ll talk about that today. Stay tuned. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition. I think moms and dads are maybe not as fully aware as they ought to be of how much real danger there is for young people as they go through their teenage years. Thirteen to nineteen is a pretty dangerous season of life; isn\u2019t it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt about it. What happens is they start pushing us out\u2014around age 11, 12, 13\u2014at a time when the world is pulling them in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And every young man \/ young woman needs a mother and a father to be able to guide them and walk through these perilous years\u2014these teenage years\u2014with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And even if you live out in rural South Dakota\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Because of media, Bob, I\u2019m telling, you there\u2019s an onslaught coming out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay; but you don\u2019t have a TV in your house, and you limit internet access to 15 minutes a day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, that helps. That helps, but they\u2019re still going to have peers. Ultimately, they\u2019re going to rub shoulders with people who offer them alternative lifestyles. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong> And the changes that are going on in their own life are enough\u2014that if they didn\u2019t have a peer group to deal with, and they didn\u2019t have the internet, and they didn\u2019t have TV\u2014just the fact that they are changing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They lack confidence; and they aren\u2019t sure who they are\u2014either as a young man or a young woman. What happens is they start taking their cues from their peers. Whether we like it or not, peers are number one during this period. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You got a real sense of this years ago when you taught a sixth-grade Sunday school class in a local church, and you did that for more than a decade. But when it came right down to it, you really wanted moms and dads to be the ones going through this material with their kids\u2014not the Sunday school teacher. <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I don\u2019t want to teach other peoples\u2019 kids. I want them to teach their own kids. Moms and dads don\u2019t have a problem with someone stepping in, for a few moments, and talking straight to their son or daughter if\u2014and this is a big if\u2014<em>if<\/em> that voice is setting them up as the authority. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, so, we\u2014more than a decade ago\u2014put together the very first <em>Passport2Purity<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> weekend\u2014five sessions that a mom or a dad could take a son or a daughter through. They listen to some teaching from you and from Barbara, and they get a chance to interact\u2014to do some projects together. Over the years, tens of thousands of families have done that. How many of you\u2014if you could have your sixth-grader experience everything you experienced in adolescence and receive the same sex education that you received from the same type of person\u2014how many of you would want your 12-year-old to replicate what education you had and the experiences you had? Hold your hands up\u2014one. Isn\u2019t that interesting? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe question is\u2014if we don\u2019t go on the offensive, what we ultimately do\u2014and I don\u2019t like the picture of this, whatsoever\u2014but it\u2019s like we pick our child up, and we come to the fence\u2014where the culture reigns on the other side\u2014and we just open the gate, and let them go through to be preyed upon by the culture. Now, here\u2019s the bad news. No matter how good a job you do, you\u2019re not going to be able to do it perfectly. You\u2019re not going to be able to head off all evil that tries to prey upon your child\u2014your son, your daughter\u2019s life. But I think it\u2019s why God gave children parents. It\u2019s why we must wake up in the morning, with the burden of this Book\u2014of teaching our children how to love God, how to walk with Him, how to get in this Book\u2014let the Book get in them\u2014and how, in all of that\u2014how they can serve Him with all their lives. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, here\u2019s the good news: We have some help for you. <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> is a guided- tour that you lead your child through the traps of peer pressure\u2014the talk, the sex talk\u2014setting boundaries\u2014crossing the date-line. [Random noises] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s going to be object lessons: How many of you believe me when I tell you that what\u2019s in this sack is dangerous? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what? There is more than likely going to be a surprise or two. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Child:<\/strong> Yes, he just taped a package to the bottom of the kid\u2019s tube side. What if it\u2019s a bomb?! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Man:<\/strong> Sweat glands, do you copy? Sweat glands, do you copy? Sweat glands! Sweat glands! Come in! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Child:<\/strong> It\u2019s embarrassing enough to be standing in front of a bunch of\u2014oh my word! There\u2019s Todd! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mom:<\/strong> Todd. Who\u2019s Todd? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Child:<\/strong> As in Todd Jones from school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mom:<\/strong> So? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Child:<\/strong> So! Quick, hide! Get down, Mom! Right here, behind the\u2014Ahh! [Scuffling sound]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[End of Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, when I taught this to my sixth-grade Sunday school class, one of the ways I taught it was using the image of traps. Proverbs talks about a snare. I want to show you three of them that, really, <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> is built around. It touches on more than just these three, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first one is found in First Corinthians 15:33. It says, \u201cDo not be deceived bad company corrupts good morals.\u201d I\u2019m going to ask you to come up. This is a rat trap. You can trap that one and tell us what that one is all about. [Click of a trap]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Man:<\/strong> Dating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Dating is all about setting some limits\u2014setting some understandings about when they\u2019re going to be able to date, who they\u2019ll be able to date, how they\u2019ll be able to date, at what age or what maturity, what the guidelines are, about if they\u2019re ready to date. And there is, actually, in the <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> kit\u2014there is a contract that they sign: \u201cI agree to wait until you say I am ready to date.\u201d They sign it and date it, and you witness it. It\u2019s a great moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomeone else come up and set up another trap. Who\u2019d like to? Ma\u2019am, come on up here. This one, here, is one of the most dangerous little traps I\u2019ve got up here. [Click of a trap] And what is it? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Woman:<\/strong> Peer pressure. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Peer pressure is back to First Corinthians 15:33. There\u2019s a reason why this is this quick one because here is the great lie that occurs\u2014that the kids that your kids are running around with are coming from families that have the same values, and have the same beliefs, and the same standards that you have. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe junior high years are the fork in the road, where you begin to find out what kind of peer pressure our kid\u2019s friends would have on them. And you know what one of the most negative peer pressure we found was\u2014sometimes, it came from young people in the youth group. Kids who have all the trappings of Christianity\u2014and they\u2019re smiling at you when they come to your house. \u201cOh, yes, sir, Mr. Rainey.\u201d Then, they tell my daughter: \u201cYou don\u2019t need to obey that! You just need to break out! You\u2019re just caged like a bird!\u201d You\u2019ll hear that story in <em>Passport2Purity<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomeone else come on up and do this last one. You can go right up here and just keep your distance. [Click of a trap] What\u2019s it say? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Woman:<\/strong> Sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Sex. Actually, when I taught this in my class\u2014I\u2019m going to show you the trap I used. [Clanging noises] This is an antique bear trap. It takes three men to set it. I have had kids come up, and they would look at that, and they\u2019d set that off. Then, all of a sudden, get the point. They are about to head off into adolescence, where there all these traps being set for them; and they better know what their boundaries are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to go all the way out to the end because, really, <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> is talking about preparing your child for life and preparing them for the ultimate commitments in life\u2014like marriage. I want you to hear about a couple who made some decisions and made some commitments that paid off as they moved toward marriage. Listen to this couple. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Samuel:<\/strong> I remember when I was in seventh grade, and I had a girlfriend. There was a lot of pressure from our friends for us to kiss and for us to kind of consummate a seventh-grade relationship\u2014to the extent that her friends would even begin to coordinate kind of like these moments to say, \u201cOkay, now, you can kiss!\u201d And they would go run and hide. They would kind of put us together, and then, they\u2019d go run behind the building or something. That relationship ended pretty shortly thereafter. When I made that decision to, I guess, to not kiss anybody until I knew she was going to be my wife, I didn\u2019t see the point, really, of dating in junior high. I had a lot of friends that were girls. We hung out at lunch, and at football games, and basketball games, and that sort of thing. But she was my last official girlfriend until Stephanie and I got together\u2014until we started dating. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met Stephanie at church\u2014at a church plant. I moved to Nashville, Tennessee, after college. She was visiting one of her friends. The first day that I met her: She was coming out of the church office, and I was coming into the church office. Being the new guy to town, I just went up to her, and introduced myself, and said, \u201cHello,\u201d\u2014actually, made fun of her because of the way that she was animated in talking to me. I didn\u2019t know what to do with her animation. So, I just kind of did it back at her, even though that wasn\u2019t me! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> He approached me with confidence, and dignity, and just looked me in the eyes, said, \u201cHello,\u201d introduced himself, and was just funny. I guess him imitating me made me endear him. There was something endearing about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That was memorable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> Made it memorable. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> I got in the car. I was going out of town. I talked about him for the next 45 minutes to my girlfriend and told her: \u201cOkay, this sounds too hokey. I can\u2019t say he\u2019s the guy I\u2019m going to marry, but I want to marry a guy like him.\u201d And\u2014because if I say, \u201cHe\u2019s the guy I\u2019m going to marry,\u201d\u2014that\u2019s just like too movie-ish: [Overly dramatized voice] \u201cHe\u2019s the one! I just know it! Oh, be still my beating heart!\u201d [Laughter] So, I said, \u201ca guy like him.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Samuel:<\/strong> Our first date was on New Year\u2019s Eve of that year. Four months later, after we had met, was our first date. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephanie:<\/strong> He just kind of told me: \u201cThis is who I am. This is what I\u2019m about, and I don\u2019t play games. If I\u2019m pursuing a girl, I\u2019m taking everything we do very seriously; and I\u2019m not just doing it for a period of time, or to have fun, or\u2014I\u2019m being very intentional about what I\u2019m doing.\u201d I got butterflies! I was like, \u201cYeah, me!\u201d [Laughter] I felt like, \u201cOkay, this is what a man is like.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[End of Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you and your sixth-grader will listen to that; and I happen to know who that couple is. That\u2019s my son and his wife. All of our kids didn\u2019t make that same commitment, but he did. You\u2019ll listen to more of the whole story on that; but it gives you a point of reference with your child, before they face the raging hormones, to decide, in advance, what they are going to do with the opposite sex. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, when I concluded my message on the traps with my sixth-grade class\u2014and we opened them up, set all the traps, and we put them up front, scattered around\u2014and there were traps of drugs, pornography. All these traps were set open. I told them, \u201cI wanted to illustrate what they were about to embark on.\u201d I\u2019ll tell you, the visual illustration of this was so powerful that I decided\u2014when I spoke at Promise Keepers at Mile High Stadium in 1995\u2014that I would do it there to conclude my message in front of 51,000 men. Listen to this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid and Jonathan Short are here. They have agreed to help me in a little illustration, here, as we conclude this message. What the guys are setting up right now\u2014on the platform, gentlemen, are traps. The bear trap is right here, in case you can\u2019t see it. They are about to set up some additional traps between where Jonathan is going to stand and where David, his dad, and I are going to stand\u2014at the other end of the stage. Jonathan, in a moment, I\u2019m going to turn and address you, as a young man. Your dad and I\u2014as the older generation\u2014are going to turn to you. We\u2019re going to beckon you to come to maturity. We\u2019re going to call you to come to adulthood. We\u2019re going to call you, as a young man, to come to being a real man\u2014to manhood; alright? When we do that, what I want you to do is I want you to come; okay? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, to illustrate what is taking place in our culture, with the youth of today, guys, I felt like it would be appropriate to blindfold Jonathan. Okay, Jonathan can\u2019t see. Jonathan, you stand right there. Your dad and I are going to go over here. There are traps all over the stage up here, guys, that you can\u2019t see, representing peer pressure, drugs, alcohol, pornography, pride, sexual immorality. About five steps in front of Jonathan is the bear trap\u2014guys, that\u2019s real, and it\u2019s loaded. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJonathan, as a young man, you\u2019re vulnerable, at this age. You know, the blindfold is a picture of adolescence; but it doesn\u2019t quite capture how vulnerable you really are. So, Jonathan, I want you to take your shoes off. Okay, Jonathan, on the count of three, I want you to come to your dad and me, on this side of the stage, representing maturity, adulthood, and manhood. One\u2014two\u2014three. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>David:<\/strong> Jonathan, stop! This is your dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[End of Audio Clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, his father came over to the boy. He said, \u201cPut your hands on my shoulder, back here, and stick close because we\u2019re walking around.\u201d They started shuffling through all those. Before the father and the son had made it around all of the 14 traps and made it all the way over here, 51,000 men were giving a standing ovation to that dad and his son, illustrating what should take place. [Clapping] I think they were clapping for two reasons. One, they wished their dads had done it; and they knew\u2014something within their chest\u2014that it was right. And secondly, they were clapping because they knew that was their responsibility with their kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo me, that\u2019s the picture of what you\u2019ve got\u2014whether it\u2019s your son or your daughter\u2014you two, together, are going to take them through some of the most dangerous and perilous traps a human being ever faces, really, with not a lot of training. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019ve been listening to the second part of a message that you shared, recently, Dennis, with parents of 11- and 12-year-olds, sixth-graders, at a local Christian school. I\u2019m just curious\u2014what did the audience\u2014what did the expressions on the faces look like as you were going through all of this? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, they had had a full day. So, they were a bit weary, and they\u2019re raising their families; but they were really listening. They were nodding their heads, taking notes, and they were getting it because I think every parent really wants to do a good job\u2014not only to raise their children up until adolescence\u2014but to prepare their child for adolescence and then go through it with them\u2014experience the ups and downs, the challenges, teach your child how to make a right choice; and if they fail, how to get back up and keep going. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You\u2019ve already shared this week that the head of school at Little Rock Christian Academy, where you shared this message, really wants to see all of the moms and dads of the sixth-graders take their sons and daughters on one of these <em>Passport2Purity<\/em> weekends. He\u2019s pretty much making it mandatory; isn\u2019t he? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> He did. He did. I thought it was great leadership. I thought: \u201cWow! That\u2019s pretty cool.\u201d To my knowledge, he\u2019s really not had any pushback. I think the parents recognize: \u201cYou know what? We need to do this.\u201d I think it\u2019s going to be fascinating, not only right now, what happens\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014but over the next six years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How does this change a culture? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014all the way through high school\u2014to have over 140 young people who, if they stick together\u2014they have a common vocabulary around a common set of issues that they\u2019re all going to face anyway\u2014but they all have a biblical perspective of those issues; and their parents know, and they know. I think it\u2019s going to be fun, Bob. I really do. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, and the lines of communication get opened up on a weekend like this. That is where the groundwork is laid for the adolescent years. You don\u2019t have to wait for your school or your church group to get together and all do this, as a coordinated effort. You can do this on your own, with your son or daughter, this summer.
