Then, five days before the election, we had a statewide debate on television. When it was over, a reporter came up to me and asked me, \u201cIs your son Nathan Dennis Mansfield?\u201d I looked at him and I thought, \u201cOh my heavens! What\u2019s happened?\u201d He said, \u201cDid you know that your son had been busted, five months before, on drug charges for paraphernalia?\u201d I knew nothing! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, March 21<sup>st<\/sup>. Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine. Dennis Mansfield joins us today to talk about the news that rocked his world\u2014the news that his son was a prodigal. Stay tuned. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. There are\u2014in all of our lives, all our families\u2014there are defining moments. There are those moments that if you write the history of a family, some dates are going to stand out as landmark dates. Some of those dates are high-water landmarks\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014wedding dates\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Some of them are valleys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Some of them are valleys. And we have a friend with us, here on <em>FamilyLife Today,<\/em> who went through a long, dark valley; and it didn\u2019t turn out quite like he and his wife thought it would turn out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, you know, we read in Luke, Chapter 15, the parable of the prodigal son. The story is a beautiful story because it ends with the father looking out the window and here comes his son. They\u2019re united, and they have a celebration and a feast. We just kind of feel like that\u2019s the way it all ought to work out. Well, sometimes, prodigals don\u2019t work out that way. And Dennis Mansfield and his wife Susan know that well. Dennis, welcome to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Thank you, Dennis. Thank you, Bob. It\u2019s an honor to be with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Dennis and his wife Susan were married in 1977. They have three children. Dennis was, for a number of years, worked with <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>, Family Research Council, and Promise Keepers\u2014is an artist through video and film. Currently, working in an organization called 8:4; is that right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> 8:4 Pictures. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> 8:4 Pictures, what\u2019s the significance of the 8\/4? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Psalm 8:4, \u201cWho is man?\u201d\u2014you know: \u201cWho are we that we get to stand before God? Who are we that we get to see what He does and the joy of His creativity?\u201d And that\u2019s why we chose Psalm 8:4. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, Dennis has just finished a book called <em>Beautiful Nate<\/em>.\u00a0 Throughout the broadcast, I\u2019ll refer to Dennis as Dennis the Greater. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just to keep it clear? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, just to keep it clear\u2014\u201cDennis the Greater, answer that question if you would.\u201d Well, introduce us to your family. You had three children; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Yes. Dennis, I was one of those rare young men who, when we\u00a0 came to Christ\u2014I was already married two years. So, I didn\u2019t grow up in a Christian family. And Susan and I were married in 1977. We just thought, \u201cWell, I guess we\u2019ll just try and figure this thing out.\u201d Well, we came to Christ; and we immediately started hearing about child-rearing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, Nate was our first. He was born in 1981. Meg came after three years later in \u201884. Then, for whatever reason, God did not allow us to have any children until a caboose boy came around in 1992, Colin. So, we have three. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Your son, Nate, brought quite a drama and quite a story to your family. When did you first really suspect that there was something serious taking place in Nate? When he was a teenager\u2014college? What point did you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> That\u2019s a great question. It really was preteen. I began to see things in him, where he would be a deceiver. He would go in and figure out ways to scam on getting deals from supermarkets or coffee. He was always just looking for <em>the deal<\/em>. And in that attitude of deception, ultimately, fed the attitude of rebellion\u2014and the rebellious attitude that was picked up by the people\u2014whether marijuana started it or it was just adjunct to being rebellious, I don\u2019t know. But it went hand and glove. And I did not know he was smoking because I didn\u2019t\u2014I didn\u2019t do drugs. And he was just getting worse with his surly attitude and his behavior patterns. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was he starting to smoke marijuana preteen? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> No, I don\u2019t believe so. I think he probably, with his buddies, would sneak in to drink people\u2019s beer. You know, I started losing track of who his buddies really were\u2014the kids that were in Christian school and all that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we moved into teen years, the best that I can figure is somewhere around his junior\/senior year, he started smoking pot\u2014don\u2019t know that he was involved in any other drugs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> When a couple watches their son go through a rebellion that spirals out of control, downward, it\u2019s not just the child that spiraling out of control. It has a way of defining a marriage and a family in ways people can\u2019t even imagine. How did it impact your marriage and also your family? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> It was insane! The anger level\u2014the divisiveness that Nate brought into Susan and my relationship was insane. It was as if we knew that we shouldn\u2019t be acting this way towards each other, but we loved our son. He became a master at peeling one parent off from the other\u2014of dividing and conquering. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, suddenly, we found ourselves, at each other, trying to\u2014either discipline Nate, on one hand\u2014or to stand next to him and support him, on the other. Meanwhile, he was off to the side\u2014I\u2019m sure\u2014smirking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were you the \u201cgrace\u201d parent, or were you the \u201claw\u201d parent? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Bob, I think that in a chaotic, near-insanity type environment, where drugs are involved in a family\u2014of rebellion, deep rebellion\u2014I think the parental roles trade off back and forth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> In our case, there were times where I was the \u201cSure, Honey, here\u2019s fifty bucks. I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll love going to the movies.\u201d And he\u2019s going to go buy something we didn\u2019t want him to buy. Other times, I was the anchor that said, \u201cNo, you\u2019re not going to do it.\u201d It was my inconsistency\u2014but on the other hand, it was also my hope\u2014\u201cOh, he\u2019s getting better.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A parent is set up. He wants the best for his son, his daughter. He\u2019s set up for hope\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> He\u2019s set up for failure\u2014is what he\u2019s set up for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Really, he is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> And I tell you\u2014for the guy that knew it all\u2014the <em>Focus on the Family<\/em> guy\u2014I was scratching my head going, \u201cCan I do anything right?\u201d It was a horrible feeling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And to that point, Dennis, I don\u2019t think our listeners\u2014unless they\u2019ve been the parent of a prodigal\u2014can understand the hopelessness, the sense of despair, the shame, the feelings of being a failure, of thinking back through all the mistakes you\u2019ve made and trying to place blame on yourself for what\u2019s going wrong in a child who clearly has his or her own will. But these parents still have needs. They need friends to come alongside them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCoach a person, who is listening right now, who is not the parent of a prodigal\u2014they know the parents, and they are afraid to say anything. They don\u2019t know what to say if they do encounter them. How can they be an encouragement to that couple or to that mom or dad? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> I\u2019d like to speak to both the coach and the player\u2014because the coach, you can enter in and honor that friend of yours\u2014where you see the prodigal by asking questions, not making statements: \u201cMarge, how is Tim doing right now? Can you tell me a little bit about what he\u2019s involved in?\u201d \u201cHow is Heather reacting at school?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAsking questions does so much for the parent of a prodigal to open up. Coming in and telling them anything\u2014there is no street \u201ccred\u201d. It is like: \u201cAre you kidding me? Why don\u2019t you just be quiet and walk away from me because I am so bruised, internally, that there is nothing you can tell me that\u2019s going to heal me.\u201d So, coach with questions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, for the parent that\u2019s out there\u2014that\u2019s listening right now, who is weeping, because they know what I\u2019m talking about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> \u2014they know what two\/three o\u2019clock in the morning feels like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> \u2014they know what having their son chest-thump them and say, \u201cYou know, I have no use for you,\u201d and going out and leaving. The only thing I can say to you\u2014and I want you to hear me with all my heart\u2014is that Christ <em>loves you<\/em>, and that He loves you, and He loves your child, and He will do whatever it takes to bring that child, <em>not to you<\/em>, <em>but to Him<\/em>. That has got to be your prayer! To be reconciled only with your child is a minor thing because, if they\u2019re in drugs, they are cons. If they are in drugs, they are lying to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> See their mouth? It is saying lies; okay? \u201cOh, but they are never ly\u2014\u201d They\u2019re lying to you if they\u2019re in drugs because that\u2019s the culture. Christ never lies, and He will not take their lies. He will be that Hound of Heaven that will lovingly go after them. I\u2019m telling you\u2014I\u2019m speaking from over a decade of experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was Nate coming home stoned? I mean, was it obvious that this was what he was doing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> It was very interesting. We\u2019d go away for a weekend, with a Christian ministry thing, and come back. The house would be a mess. Knock on the door, on Monday: \u201cYes, your son had a party here, and the police came. Thirty-five people left and ran over the fences, and we had to chase people down.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI literally brought him in to face the police officer. My son, Nate, looked at this police officer\u2014a gentleman that had great respect in our community\u2014and said, \u201cYou\u2019re a liar! That never happened.\u201d That\u2019s Nate telling the police officer! I remember thinking, \u201cThis poison is now in the DNA. It\u2019s in his marrow.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, you\u2019re seeing the disrespect that\u2019s emerging\u2014this attitude. Are you seeing the drug use, the marijuana use, manifesting itself in other ways other than the disrespect? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Normally, in his speech. There\u2019d be dullness. There\u2019d be that sort of <em>Cheech &amp; Chong<\/em> feel to his expressions. Yet, I was like, \u201cWell, boy, you\u2019re sounding pretty slow.\u201d \u201cYes, I\u2019ve got some chew.\u201d I didn\u2019t do chew. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Like chewing tobacco? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Like chewing tobacco. I saw the lie, but I began to believe the lie. That was the deepest sorrow for me\u2014is that I knew it and was sucked into it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Here\u2019s something that a parent who has never had a prodigal can\u2019t possibly understand. You so want to believe the best about your child. It is\u2014I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s a desire to rescue, a desire to get out of a hopeless situation\u2014but it is the heart of a parent to want to believe\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014even a lie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And so people are listening: \u201cHow could you do that? How could you hear the lies and then rush into believe it, even though you\u2019ve heard 553 lies that have preceded that\u2014that you caught them in a lie?\u201d\u2014right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly right, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I wrote down three things that I want to say to the parent, at this point. Number one: Protect your relationship with God. Get in the Book. Remind yourself\u2014speaking of a lie\u2014remind yourself of the truth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, protect your relationship with your spouse. Don\u2019t let that be destroyed in the midst of this battle. And I want you to comment on this before I get to my third one here. Was your marriage ever in trouble to the point where you and Susan felt like, \u201cI wonder if we\u2019re going to make it?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> We weren\u2019t to that point. We were headed to that point. What I mean by that is we had so grounded ourselves in Christ that we knew that that was truth. And we moved towards it; but it didn\u2019t feel like it, Dennis. It didn\u2019t feel like it because I\u2019ve got, in front of me, this child that I\u2019ve raised, who is now adolescent coming into adulthood\u2014and he\u2019s telling me what he is doing, and I\u2019m believing him because I want to believe in him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, finally, Susan and I looked at each other; and we went, \u201cHe is lying to us.\u201d He is not a liar, in the truest sense. He is someone addicted to drugs\u2014who is lying to us. We began to disassociate our hope and bring it into reality of fact\u2014big difference. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There really is. And you said something there that\u2019s a key word to play off of. You can\u2019t live your life by feelings because the addict will use your feelings to manipulate you and play you against the truth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> They will steal your money. They will sell your things from home. They will do everything they can, and they will not blink an eye. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, protect your marriage. And I meant to add to that, also, protect your family. One of the things that can happen with the other children is they can begin to rush in to rescue mom or dad from all the pain\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Or be left completely out of the equation because mom and dad are so consumed with one child\u2014they don\u2019t have time for anybody else. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, absolutely, Bob, absolutely. Then, finally, my third point\u2014and this is where the body of Christ, the Church\u2014this is where community, this is where relationships are a huge payoff. Protect a friendship or two with someone you can trust. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It helps to have someone from the outside who you invite in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014to your valley because the valley is so insane. The valley makes so little sense\u2014that you need someone just to remind you of the truth: Number one, about God; number two, about yourself; number three, about who you were as parents\u2014somebody who has witnessed what you did and say, \u201cYou know what? You guys weren\u2019t failures.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> I tell you, Dennis, Michael Boerner, who is one of my dear friends and one of the friends of the ministry\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> \u2014was that man for me. He reminded me\u2014he brought me back to the anchor of who I was in Christ. To that person who wants to be a coach and wants to help someone through it\u2014don\u2019t pretend that you know what they\u2019re going through. Michael never pretended that he knew what I was going through. Just go in and say\u2014ask questions, \u201cHow are you?\u201d Again, I go back to questions. To the person\u2014that comes in, who wants to give Scripture and beat the daylight out of parents who are already beaten\u2014\u201cGo away!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell our listeners what you were doing at this time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Here\u2019s the irony. I was serving with a ministry called <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>. I worked in association with <em>Focus<\/em> as one of the executive directors of the Family Policy Council. I was considered the \u201cpro-family guy\u201d. I was the go-to-guy on how to raise a family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, in fact, you decided to get politically involved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> You know, I did. After a decade of serving in association with <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>, an open seat for Congress occurred. In Idaho, there are only two seats. It\u2019s a very small state. That seat was open; and then, I decided, \u201cYes, let\u2019s run.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, you ran for Congress; and that\u2019s when you had a point in this story that was kind of one of those dates that gets marked down on the calendar as a defining moment for your family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> When I made the decision to run for Congress, we spent about a year, preparing for it\u2014running for it. Then, five days before the election, we had a statewide debate on television. When it was over, a reporter came up to me and asked me, \u201cIs your son Nathan Dennis Mansfield?\u201d I looked at him and I said, \u201cOh my heavens! What\u2019s happened?\u201d He said, \u201cDid you know that your son had been busted, five months before, on a drug charge for paraphernalia?\u201d I knew nothing, five days out from the election. I was suddenly thrown into this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, wait. Your son had been arrested? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Had been arrested\u2014was out of our house, had been arrested\u2014never told us. The court date kept being moved along, by whatever powers that be\u2014and, eventually, was announced, five days before the election. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was he\u2014this was post-high school? He\u2019s living on his own? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> He was in his senior year. We had had the moment of time when\u2014we\u2019re talking about moments\u2014in his senior year, where he blew up and said, \u201cI\u2019ll see you in the obituaries,\u201d in December\/January of his senior year. He moved out\u2014he moved out of our house\u2014he was 18. So, why he was so angry and why he moved out in that December\/January period was because he had been busted. He never shared that with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, here is the media\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Oh my! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014five days before the election, wanting to play that card to bust you and keep you out of Congress. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Well, keep me out of Congress\u2014to call me a hypocrite, to go against every stand that we had taken, for a decade, to blow out the credibility of the pro-life stand, pro-choice in education stand, the stand against the gay agenda\u2014all those things. It was a perfect \u201cMan bites dog story\u201d. They went after it, and they bit hard. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I\u2019ve said it more than once, here on today\u2019s broadcast, Dennis. A parent who has not been through this cannot imagine the chaos that each phone call brings, that each new set of circumstances bring. I mean, it\u2019s absolutely a crazy-maker for a parent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI do not know how a person, who does not have a solid faith in Jesus Christ, handles these kinds of storms. They have to move to denial\u2014to some kind of disassociation with reality and escapism, of their own, to drugs, alcohol, affairs, etc.\u2014because the pain can be unbearable in addition to just the mental games your mind plays of all the what-if\u2019s of what\u2019s taking place: \u201cWhere is he? What\u2019s he doing? What\u2019s next?\u201d It really is an incredible set of circumstances. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> It is, Dennis. I think that term that you just coined, \u201ca crazy-maker,\u201d is absolutely true. That\u2019s how Susan and I began to look at this. Nate got busted. We lost the Congressional race. Suddenly, we\u2019re looking around. Nate went through court\u2014did what he had to do. Then, it got crazier. He ended up being arrested <em>in Missouri<\/em> for drug charges. The wise judge said to him and the other three Idaho boys: \u201cHey, you guys are better than this! Go get your degree. Show me your degree. Your felony will drop off.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe came back to Idaho. I asked him: \u201cAre you in school? Are we ready to go?\u201d \u201cNo, Dad, I\u2019m not into that.\u201d He squandered\u2014and I thought\u2014he said, \u201cI\u2019ll just never go back to Missouri.\u201d Ironic as it was, he believed he could just walk away from the responsibility of a judge\u2019s order on him for a felony! That\u2019s crazy-maker time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> And as the story went on, it continued to go on. It ended up being that\u2014and a lot of people don\u2019t realize this\u2014that people who are involved with OxyContin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and oxycodone, which are prescription drugs\u2014that when the money dries up for that, the suitable substitute, in the drug culture, is heroin. <br><br>And so, suddenly, my precious son, my beautiful Nate, went from oxycodone, OxyContin, to heroin\u2014and was arrested in our community with balloons of black tar heroin. It just got worse! He spent a year in our local jail\u2014then, was sent to Missouri to face that same judge to go to prison. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I restate what I said earlier. Protect your relationship with God. Protect your marriage and your family\u2014and what\u2019s left of your family. And third, protect your friendships because you can\u2019t go through this alone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M: <\/strong>Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, stories like this\u2014these are stories that often remain tucked away. We don\u2019t know it\u2019s going on because nobody feels safe to say, \u201cThis is what\u2019s happening in our family;\u201d but when you hear about it\u2014when somebody cracks open the door and shares a little bit of what\u2019s happening\u2014you want to be ready to know how to respond\u2014how to demonstrate kindness, and compassion, and empathy, and love for your friend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt might be good to have a copy of Dennis\u2019s book available\u2014maybe a couple of copies available so that you can give one out when you hear about somebody whose son or daughter is going through something like this. a year, preparing for it\u2014running for it. Then, five days before the election, we had a statewide debate on television. When it was over, a reporter came up to me and asked me, \u201cIs your son Nathan Dennis Mansfield?\u201d I looked at him and I thought, \u201cOh my heavens! What\u2019s happened?\u201d He said, \u201cDid you know that your son had been busted, five months before, on drug charges for paraphernalia?\u201d I knew nothing! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, March 21<sup>st<\/sup>. Dennis Mansfield joins us today to talk about the news that rocked his world\u2014the news that his son was a prodigal. There are those moments that if you write the history of a family, some dates are going to stand out as landmark dates. Some of those dates are high-water landmarks\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014wedding dates\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Some of them are valleys. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Some of them are valleys. And we have a friend with us, here on <em>FamilyLife Today,<\/em> who went through a long, dark valley; and it didn\u2019t turn out quite like he and his wife thought it would turn out. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, you know, we read in Luke, Chapter 15, the parable of the prodigal son. The story is a beautiful story because it ends with the father looking out the window and here comes his son. They\u2019re united, and they have a celebration and a feast. We just kind of feel like that\u2019s the way it all ought to work out. Well, sometimes, prodigals don\u2019t work out that way. And Dennis Mansfield and his wife Susan know that well. Dennis, welcome to the broadcast. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Thank you, Dennis. Thank you, Bob. It\u2019s an honor to be with you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Dennis and his wife Susan were married in 1977. They have three children. Dennis was, for a number of years, worked with <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>, Family Research Council, and Promise Keepers\u2014is an artist through video and film. Currently, working in an organization called 8:4; is that right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> 8:4 Pictures. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> 8:4 Pictures, what\u2019s the significance of the 8\/4? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Psalm 8:4, \u201cWho is man?\u201d\u2014you know: \u201cWho are we that we get to stand before God? Who are we that we get to see what He does and the joy of His creativity?\u201d And that\u2019s why we chose Psalm 8:4. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, Dennis has just finished a book called <em>Beautiful Nate<\/em>.\u00a0 Throughout the broadcast, I\u2019ll refer to Dennis as Dennis the Greater. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just to keep it clear? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, just to keep it clear\u2014\u201cDennis the Greater, answer that question if you would.\u201d Well, introduce us to your family. You had three children; right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Yes. Dennis, I was one of those rare young men who, when we\u00a0 came to Christ\u2014I was already married two years. So, I didn\u2019t grow up in a Christian family. And Susan and I were married in 1977. We just thought, \u201cWell, I guess we\u2019ll just try and figure this thing out.\u201d Well, we came to Christ; and we immediately started hearing about child-rearing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, Nate was our first. He was born in 1981. Meg came after three years later in \u201884. Then, for whatever reason, God did not allow us to have any children until a caboose boy came around in 1992, Colin. So, we have three. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Your son, Nate, brought quite a drama and quite a story to your family. When did you first really suspect that there was something serious taking place in Nate? When he was a teenager\u2014college? What point did you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> That\u2019s a great question. It really was preteen. I began to see things in him, where he would be a deceiver. He would go in and figure out ways to scam on getting deals from supermarkets or coffee. He was always just looking for <em>the deal<\/em>. And in that attitude of deception, ultimately, fed the attitude of rebellion\u2014and the rebellious attitude that was picked up by the people\u2014whether marijuana started it or it was just adjunct to being rebellious, I don\u2019t know. But it went hand and glove. And I did not know he was smoking because I didn\u2019t\u2014I didn\u2019t do drugs. And he was just getting worse with his surly attitude and his behavior patterns. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was he starting to smoke marijuana preteen? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> No, I don\u2019t believe so. I think he probably, with his buddies, would sneak in to drink people\u2019s beer. You know, I started losing track of who his buddies really were\u2014the kids that were in Christian school and all that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we moved into teen years, the best that I can figure is somewhere around his junior\/senior year, he started smoking pot\u2014don\u2019t know that he was involved in any other drugs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> When a couple watches their son go through a rebellion that spirals out of control, downward, it\u2019s not just the child that spiraling out of control. It has a way of defining a marriage and a family in ways people can\u2019t even imagine. How did it impact your marriage and also your family? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> It was insane! The anger level\u2014the divisiveness that Nate brought into Susan and my relationship was insane. It was as if we knew that we shouldn\u2019t be acting this way towards each other, but we loved our son. He became a master at peeling one parent off from the other\u2014of dividing and conquering. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, suddenly, we found ourselves, at each other, trying to\u2014either discipline Nate, on one hand\u2014or to stand next to him and support him, on the other. Meanwhile, he was off to the side\u2014I\u2019m sure\u2014smirking. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Were you the \u201cgrace\u201d parent, or were you the \u201claw\u201d parent? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Bob, I think that in a chaotic, near-insanity type environment, where drugs are involved in a family\u2014of rebellion, deep rebellion\u2014I think the parental roles trade off back and forth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> In our case, there were times where I was the \u201cSure, Honey, here\u2019s fifty bucks. I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll love going to the movies.\u201d And he\u2019s going to go buy something we didn\u2019t want him to buy. Other times, I was the anchor that said, \u201cNo, you\u2019re not going to do it.\u201d It was my inconsistency\u2014but on the other hand, it was also my hope\u2014\u201cOh, he\u2019s getting better.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A parent is set up. He wants the best for his son, his daughter. He\u2019s set up for hope\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> He\u2019s set up for failure\u2014is what he\u2019s set up for. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Really, he is. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> And I tell you\u2014for the guy that knew it all\u2014the <em>Focus on the Family<\/em> guy\u2014I was scratching my head going, \u201cCan I do anything right?\u201d It was a horrible feeling. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And to that point, Dennis, I don\u2019t think our listeners\u2014unless they\u2019ve been the parent of a prodigal\u2014can understand the hopelessness, the sense of despair, the shame, the feelings of being a failure, of thinking back through all the mistakes you\u2019ve made and trying to place blame on yourself for what\u2019s going wrong in a child who clearly has his or her own will. But these parents still have needs. They need friends to come alongside them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCoach a person, who is listening right now, who is not the parent of a prodigal\u2014they know the parents, and they are afraid to say anything. They don\u2019t know what to say if they do encounter them. How can they be an encouragement to that couple or to that mom or dad? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> I\u2019d like to speak to both the coach and the player\u2014because the coach, you can enter in and honor that friend of yours\u2014where you see the prodigal by asking questions, not making statements: \u201cMarge, how is Tim doing right now? Can you tell me a little bit about what he\u2019s involved in?\u201d \u201cHow is Heather reacting at school?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAsking questions does so much for the parent of a prodigal to open up. Coming in and telling them anything\u2014there is no street \u201ccred\u201d. It is like: \u201cAre you kidding me? Why don\u2019t you just be quiet and walk away from me because I am so bruised, internally, that there is nothing you can tell me that\u2019s going to heal me.\u201d So, coach with questions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, for the parent that\u2019s out there\u2014that\u2019s listening right now, who is weeping, because they know what I\u2019m talking about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> \u2014they know what two\/three o\u2019clock in the morning feels like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> \u2014they know what having their son chest-thump them and say, \u201cYou know, I have no use for you,\u201d and going out and leaving. The only thing I can say to you\u2014and I want you to hear me with all my heart\u2014is that Christ <em>loves you<\/em>, and that He loves you, and He loves your child, and He will do whatever it takes to bring that child, <em>not to you<\/em>, <em>but to Him<\/em>. That has got to be your prayer! To be reconciled only with your child is a minor thing because, if they\u2019re in drugs, they are cons. If they are in drugs, they are lying to you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> See their mouth? It is saying lies; okay? \u201cOh, but they are never ly\u2014\u201d They\u2019re lying to you if they\u2019re in drugs because that\u2019s the culture. Christ never lies, and He will not take their lies. He will be that Hound of Heaven that will lovingly go after them. I\u2019m telling you\u2014I\u2019m speaking from over a decade of experience. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was Nate coming home stoned? I mean, was it obvious that this was what he was doing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> It was very interesting. We\u2019d go away for a weekend, with a Christian ministry thing, and come back. The house would be a mess. Knock on the door, on Monday: \u201cYes, your son had a party here, and the police came. Thirty-five people left and ran over the fences, and we had to chase people down.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI literally brought him in to face the police officer. My son, Nate, looked at this police officer\u2014a gentleman that had great respect in our community\u2014and said, \u201cYou\u2019re a liar! That never happened.\u201d That\u2019s Nate telling the police officer! I remember thinking, \u201cThis poison is now in the DNA. It\u2019s in his marrow.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, you\u2019re seeing the disrespect that\u2019s emerging\u2014this attitude. Are you seeing the drug use, the marijuana use, manifesting itself in other ways other than the disrespect? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Normally, in his speech. There\u2019d be dullness. There\u2019d be that sort of <em>Cheech &amp; Chong<\/em> feel to his expressions. Yet, I was like, \u201cWell, boy, you\u2019re sounding pretty slow.\u201d \u201cYes, I\u2019ve got some chew.\u201d I didn\u2019t do chew. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Like chewing tobacco? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Like chewing tobacco. I saw the lie, but I began to believe the lie. That was the deepest sorrow for me\u2014is that I knew it and was sucked into it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Here\u2019s something that a parent who has never had a prodigal can\u2019t possibly understand. You so want to believe the best about your child. It is\u2014I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s a desire to rescue, a desire to get out of a hopeless situation\u2014but it is the heart of a parent to want to believe\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014even a lie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And so people are listening: \u201cHow could you do that? How could you hear the lies and then rush into believe it, even though you\u2019ve heard 553 lies that have preceded that\u2014that you caught them in a lie?\u201d\u2014right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> That\u2019s exactly right, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I wrote down three things that I want to say to the parent, at this point. Number one: Protect your relationship with God. Get in the Book. Remind yourself\u2014speaking of a lie\u2014remind yourself of the truth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, protect your relationship with your spouse. Don\u2019t let that be destroyed in the midst of this battle. And I want you to comment on this before I get to my third one here. Was your marriage ever in trouble to the point where you and Susan felt like, \u201cI wonder if we\u2019re going to make it?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> We weren\u2019t to that point. We were headed to that point. What I mean by that is we had so grounded ourselves in Christ that we knew that that was truth. And we moved towards it; but it didn\u2019t feel like it, Dennis. It didn\u2019t feel like it because I\u2019ve got, in front of me, this child that I\u2019ve raised, who is now adolescent coming into adulthood\u2014and he\u2019s telling me what he is doing, and I\u2019m believing him because I want to believe in him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, finally, Susan and I looked at each other; and we went, \u201cHe is lying to us.\u201d He is not a liar, in the truest sense. He is someone addicted to drugs\u2014who is lying to us. We began to disassociate our hope and bring it into reality of fact\u2014big difference. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There really is. And you said something there that\u2019s a key word to play off of. You can\u2019t live your life by feelings because the addict will use your feelings to manipulate you and play you against the truth. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> They will steal your money. They will sell your things from home. They will do everything they can, and they will not blink an eye. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, protect your marriage. And I meant to add to that, also, protect your family. One of the things that can happen with the other children is they can begin to rush in to rescue mom or dad from all the pain\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Or be left completely out of the equation because mom and dad are so consumed with one child\u2014they don\u2019t have time for anybody else. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Oh, absolutely, Bob, absolutely. Then, finally, my third point\u2014and this is where the body of Christ, the Church\u2014this is where community, this is where relationships are a huge payoff. Protect a friendship or two with someone you can trust. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It helps to have someone from the outside who you invite in\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014to your valley because the valley is so insane. The valley makes so little sense\u2014that you need someone just to remind you of the truth: Number one, about God; number two, about yourself; number three, about who you were as parents\u2014somebody who has witnessed what you did and say, \u201cYou know what? You guys weren\u2019t failures.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> I tell you, Dennis, Michael Boerner, who is one of my dear friends and one of the friends of the ministry\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> \u2014was that man for me. He reminded me\u2014he brought me back to the anchor of who I was in Christ. To that person who wants to be a coach and wants to help someone through it\u2014don\u2019t pretend that you know what they\u2019re going through. Michael never pretended that he knew what I was going through. Just go in and say\u2014ask questions, \u201cHow are you?\u201d Again, I go back to questions. To the person\u2014that comes in, who wants to give Scripture and beat the daylight out of parents who are already beaten\u2014\u201cGo away!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell our listeners what you were doing at this time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Here\u2019s the irony. I was serving with a ministry called <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>. I worked in association with <em>Focus<\/em> as one of the executive directors of the Family Policy Council. I was considered the \u201cpro-family guy\u201d. I was the go-to-guy on how to raise a family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Well, in fact, you decided to get politically involved. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> You know, I did. After a decade of serving in association with <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>, an open seat for Congress occurred. In Idaho, there are only two seats. It\u2019s a very small state. That seat was open; and then, I decided, \u201cYes, let\u2019s run.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, you ran for Congress; and that\u2019s when you had a point in this story that was kind of one of those dates that gets marked down on the calendar as a defining moment for your family. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> When I made the decision to run for Congress, we spent about a year, preparing for it\u2014running for it. Then, five days before the election, we had a statewide debate on television. When it was over, a reporter came up to me and asked me, \u201cIs your son Nathan Dennis Mansfield?\u201d I looked at him and I said, \u201cOh my heavens! What\u2019s happened?\u201d He said, \u201cDid you know that your son had been busted, five months before, on a drug charge for paraphernalia?\u201d I knew nothing, five days out from the election. I was suddenly thrown into this. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, wait. Your son had been arrested? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Had been arrested\u2014was out of our house, had been arrested\u2014never told us. The court date kept being moved along, by whatever powers that be\u2014and, eventually, was announced, five days before the election. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Was he\u2014this was post-high school? He\u2019s living on his own? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> He was in his senior year. We had had the moment of time when\u2014we\u2019re talking about moments\u2014in his senior year, where he blew up and said, \u201cI\u2019ll see you in the obituaries,\u201d in December\/January of his senior year. He moved out\u2014he moved out of our house\u2014he was 18. So, why he was so angry and why he moved out in that December\/January period was because he had been busted. He never shared that with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So, here is the media\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Oh my! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014five days before the election, wanting to play that card to bust you and keep you out of Congress. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> Well, keep me out of Congress\u2014to call me a hypocrite, to go against every stand that we had taken, for a decade, to blow out the credibility of the pro-life stand, pro-choice in education stand, the stand against the gay agenda\u2014all those things. It was a perfect \u201cMan bites dog story\u201d. They went after it, and they bit hard. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I\u2019ve said it more than once, here on today\u2019s broadcast, Dennis. A parent who has not been through this cannot imagine the chaos that each phone call brings, that each new set of circumstances bring. I mean, it\u2019s absolutely a crazy-maker for a parent. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI do not know how a person, who does not have a solid faith in Jesus Christ, handles these kinds of storms. They have to move to denial\u2014to some kind of disassociation with reality and escapism, of their own, to drugs, alcohol, affairs, etc.\u2014because the pain can be unbearable in addition to just the mental games your mind plays of all the what-if\u2019s of what\u2019s taking place: \u201cWhere is he? What\u2019s he doing? What\u2019s next?\u201d It really is an incredible set of circumstances. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> It is, Dennis. I think that term that you just coined, \u201ca crazy-maker,\u201d is absolutely true. That\u2019s how Susan and I began to look at this. Nate got busted. We lost the Congressional race. Suddenly, we\u2019re looking around. Nate went through court\u2014did what he had to do. Then, it got crazier. He ended up being arrested <em>in Missouri<\/em> for drug charges. The wise judge said to him and the other three Idaho boys: \u201cHey, you guys are better than this! Go get your degree. Show me your degree. Your felony will drop off.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe came back to Idaho. I asked him: \u201cAre you in school? Are we ready to go?\u201d \u201cNo, Dad, I\u2019m not into that.\u201d He squandered\u2014and I thought\u2014he said, \u201cI\u2019ll just never go back to Missouri.\u201d Ironic as it was, he believed he could just walk away from the responsibility of a judge\u2019s order on him for a felony! That\u2019s crazy-maker time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M:<\/strong> And as the story went on, it continued to go on. It ended up being that\u2014and a lot of people don\u2019t realize this\u2014that people who are involved with OxyContin<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> and oxycodone, which are prescription drugs\u2014that when the money dries up for that, the suitable substitute, in the drug culture, is heroin. <br><br>And so, suddenly, my precious son, my beautiful Nate, went from oxycodone, OxyContin, to heroin\u2014and was arrested in our community with balloons of black tar heroin. It just got worse! He spent a year in our local jail\u2014then, was sent to Missouri to face that same judge to go to prison. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And I restate what I said earlier. Protect your relationship with God. Protect your marriage and your family\u2014and what\u2019s left of your family. And third, protect your friendships because you can\u2019t go through this alone. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis M: <\/strong>Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You know, stories like this\u2014these are stories that often remain tucked away. We don\u2019t know it\u2019s going on because nobody feels safe to say, \u201cThis is what\u2019s happening in our family;\u201d but when you hear about it\u2014when somebody cracks open the door and shares a little bit of what\u2019s happening\u2014you want to be ready to know how to respond\u2014how to demonstrate kindness, and compassion, and empathy, and love for your friend. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt might be good to have a copy of Dennis\u2019s book available\u2014maybe a couple of copies available so that you can give one out when you hear about somebody whose son or daughter is going through something like this.
