Stay with us. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition. You know, I was just sitting here thinking about the fact that a couple of weeks ago we were on the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup> marriage cruise. Going on a cruise is, for a lot of us, it\u2019s kind of one of those once-in-a-lifetime\u2014you don\u2019t get to do it very often.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019ve hosted, now, three of these <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> cruises. It is a lot of fun, but it is\u2014in our case, I think it is one of the most informative, life-changing opportunities to spend some really fun days and evenings with the love of your life\u2014 walking around on deck, having conversations, not being interrupted by this shiny thing I\u2019ve got in my pocket\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> My cellphone\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014this screen\u2014this screen\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014it was off for three days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Three days. Did you go through withdrawal? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t! I didn\u2019t miss not looking at the email. I didn\u2019t go down and log-on for anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I just kept having fun with Mary Ann. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to read you a quote. This is from someone who just came. They\u2019ve been married for 29 years. They said, \u201cThe first day was somewhat awkward since we hadn\u2019t spent dedicated time with each other and without distractions.\u201d Then, they said the couple\u2019s \u201conion was slowly peeled off, one layer at a time. And by the end of the week, the <em>onion<\/em> had disappeared. [Laughter] Amen to this wonderful and eternal experience!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t think people can begin to realize this can be a transformational experience for an individual,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014for a couple, for, really, a family\u2014because you are going to gain things, on the cruise, that are going recalibrate you as you go back to experience life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And there are times in your marriage where you intentionally want to make some memories\u2014where you want to do some special things. This year, they were around a sculpted ice heart that was melting, there in the breeze, and wedding cake. We lead couples through their vows. And it really is a great ceremony and just a tremendous way to put an exclamation point on a great week. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes, the ice heart wasn\u2019t the only heart melting up onboard the pool deck\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014that last night. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well-said, Bob, well-said. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [Laughter] Now, we\u2019re going to\u2014we want you to hear a portion of a message from Dr. Eric Mason. Eric is the pastor of Epiphany Fellowship in Philadelphia. He and his wife joined us, onboard the cruise; and he spoke on Tuesday night. He spoke about what seeking forgiveness really needs to look like and what are the characteristics of genuine repentance in a marriage. And here, with his message from Psalm 51, is Dr. Eric Mason. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Eric:<\/strong> Let\u2019s get it. Verse 1 [and following] says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHave mercy on me, O God, according to Your steadfast love, according to Your abundant mercy. Blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquities and cleanse me from my sin; for I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against You, and You only, have I sinned and have done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be justified in Your words and blameless in Your judgment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBehold, I was brought forth in iniquity and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, You delight in truth in the inward being, and You teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean. Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness. Let the bones that You have broken rejoice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to talk about, tonight, of course, as you see, the characteristics of a repentant spouse. As I grow as a believer, and as I get to connect with Christians and Christians who grow and mature in different ways, we can become a big facade in our lives, where we\u2019re not willing to admit where we are because we\u2019ve become<em> skilled<\/em> at hiding where we actually are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, there comes a time and there comes a need in our lives when we have to get to the point, as believers: \u201cWill we live our lives open and bare before the Lord?\u201d Are we going to be honest and open up ourselves before Him and the people around you? If you want to grow, if you want to develop, if you want to be better for His glory\u2014not a self-help message\u2014but a Gospel message\u2014where we begin to say, \u201cHey, God, I am sick and tired of being sick and tired; and I want to be open before You.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we come to this passage, which, I believe, is sort of the sine qua non of repentance in the Bible. It\u2019s one of those passages that play a phenomenal roll in us recognizing what repentance is and what repentance looks like. The word in the Old Testament usually for repentance that points out its principle here is the word <em>nicham<\/em> which points to the idea of turning the other direction. In the New Testament, the word is <em>metanoia<\/em>. The word <em>metanoia<\/em> doesn\u2019t just mean change the direction. It means to change your way of thinking about whatever you\u2019re thinking about that\u2019s opposite of what God already knows and embrace His mindset. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat points to the reality\u2014listen\u2014that without repentance, we are walking in a stronghold. How do I know that? Because Second Corinthians, Chapter 10, says that we must take every thought captive, in obedience to Christ, that which exalts itself against Him. So, the stronghold isn\u2019t the actual sin that we commit, but it\u2019s the mindset that shapes the execution of the sin that we commit. That stronghold barricades us in from turning from our sin and turning from the living God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, David sins by committing adultery and murder. He comes to a point later, which we will get to, where he gets confronted with his sin by a friend that came and got in his grill\u2014in his face. He said, \u201cDavid, I want to tell you a story.\u201d He said, \u201cCome on, man, tell me a story. I love your stories, Nate.\u201d Nathan starts telling the story. He said, \u201cMan, there is this man. He had a whole bunch of sheep.\u201d He said, \u201cOkay. Okay.\u201d He said, \u201cAnd there was one who had one little sheep that he took care of\u2014beautiful, beautiful sheep.\u201d He said, \u201cOkay.\u201d \u201cThis dude that had a whole bunch of sheep came over, got with him, took his sheep, got rid of him, and put him with the other sheep\u2014even though, he had a whole bunch of sheep.\u201d David said, \u201cBring him here right now!\u201d He said, \u201cYou\u2019re the man.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, it\u2019s interesting that David had a lot of self-righteousness when it came to somebody else\u2019s sin; but when it came to him dealing with his sin, he\u2019s going to say, what we hear in the first part of this chapter\u2014which I think we all should call upon and work through, as people who are to be repentant spouses\u2014which brings me to my first point of\u2014if you\u2019re going to walk out the characteristics of a deeply-repentant spouse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one: You must throw yourself on the character of God. Right here, David says, \u201cHave mercy on me, O God.\u201d I like the fact that he calls for God\u2019s mercy because he called on God\u2019s character before he dealt with his sin. This is very, very important because if you focus in on your sin first\u2014then, you\u2019ll get depressed. You\u2019ll get frustrated, and you\u2019ll feel locked in\u2014but if you put your mind on the character of God, then, you\u2019ll have encouragement to deal with your sin. But if you try to deal with your sin, without the character of God, you will get in deeper bondage. That\u2019s why you need the Gospel, not self-righteousness, because the Gospel is the willingness to submit ourselves to the beauty of the character of God so that Christ\u2019s righteousness can cover our sin and deal with it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we call on God\u2019s character, not our sin. You\u2019ve got to make sure God\u2019s\u2014you\u2019ve got to make sure\u2014in your life, no matter where you are\u2014and in your marriage, that the character of God and the perfections and attributes of God are driving your marriage, not just your sin, because if you just mention your sin to each other all the time, then, all you\u2019re going to do is argue about your sin: \u201cWell, you sinned against me.\u201d \u201cNo, you sinned against me.\u201d \u201cWell, the other day it was you.\u201d \u201cNow, today it was you.\u201d \u201cNo, you remember when you did...\u201d\u2014and you\u2019re just going\u2014back, and back, and back, and back. But <em>if you<\/em> focus on God\u2019s mercy and you look at the little bit that your spouse did to you, in light of the holiness of God and on your life, you say: \u201cGod, I deserve this. So, how am I going to add on and push on to them what You didn\u2019t give to me?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, my man David, he begins to throw himself and calls on the attributes that he needs. Then, after that, he says something beautiful. He says, \u201cAccording to Your steadfast love...\u201d I like that. That\u2019s the Hebrew word, <em>hesedh<\/em>. And that word means loyal love. Somebody say, \u201cLoyal love.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience:<\/strong> Loyal love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Eric:<\/strong> Loyal love points to this\u2014God\u2019s unconditional covenant with His people. That means He\u2019s faithful, even though we\u2019re not faithful. David isn\u2019t calling on family. He\u2019s not calling on\u2014like, \u201cGod, I\u2019ve been killing it for Your glory. I\u2019ve been spending time in the Word. I just think I just deserve some love right now.\u201d No, that\u2019s not what he does. What he does is he says: \u201cI know I\u2019ve messed up beyond the worst level of messing up. What I need is\u2014I need the God, right now, who will deal with me based on His commitment to covenant, not my failure of the covenant.\u201d See, that\u2019s what\u2019s so good about the new covenant through Christ, though\u2014is the new covenant, through Christ, is an unconditional covenant, where God does all the work of the covenant. We work <em>because<\/em> of His love, not working to <em>get<\/em> His love. He lays out, for us, this covenant love in this steadfast love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, he says, again, \u201cAccording to your abundant mercy...\u201d Then, he begins to deal with his sin. Then, he begins to say, \u201cLord,\u201d\u2014he says: \u201cBlot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly\u201d\u2014he says, \u201cI want it all gone, God.\u201d He says, \u201cI don\u2019t want any trace of my mess\u201d\u2014just let me build a foundation. He said he doesn\u2019t want any of his mess to get in the way of his relationship with the living God. He says, \u201cCleanse me from my sins.\u201d So, he asked for full cleansing from his sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst thing, we see\u2014if you are going to be a deeply-repentant spouse\u2014is the attributes of God: God\u2019s mercy, God\u2019s love, God\u2019s grace, God\u2019s longsuffering, God\u2019s spirituality, God\u2019s omniscience, God\u2019s omnipresence\u2014His attributes must pervade a marriage because the more your mind is on the Lord and your marriage\u2014and not just the faults of your spouse\u2014then, you can deal with sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut then, next, number two: If you are going to succeed, the characteristics\u2014and this can apply to anyone, even though we are applying it specifically to a spouse\u2014but next point\u2014if you\u2019re going to walk in the characteristics of a deeply-repentant spouse\u2014number two: You must fully own the extent of your sin. <br><br>David says, \u201cI know my transgressions.\u201d Now, the word here for \u201cknow\u201d means to know something intimately. When he says, \u201cI know my sin,\u201d that means he is able to absolutely, unadulteratedly acknowledge what he did. That means he knows the sinfulness of his sin. He didn\u2019t try to say: \u201cWell, it wasn\u2019t like So-and-so over there. You know how he did or how she did....\u201d No, no, no. That\u2019s not what he\u2019s saying. He\u2019s saying: \u201cI\u2019m talking about I know my own transgressions. I know the sinfulness of my sin.\u201d See, you can\u2019t repent until you know how sinful your sin is. See, a part of the most authentic and powerful thing a Christian can do is own their sin. You can\u2019t even get <em>saved<\/em> until you own your sin! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what the Bible says\u2014that you have to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. You have to <em>acknowledge<\/em> that there is a sin issue for the cross to pay for sins\u2014but, as a believer, once you start walking with Him, you\u2019re provisionally certified and Kingdom-bound\u2014but you are still, practically, a mess. So, you better get used to learning how to repent. Some of us, in this house\u2014and I fight with it every day, myself. That\u2019s why I\u2019m yelling right now because I\u2019m preaching to myself [Laughter]\u2014that I have to <em>fight<\/em> self-righteousness! I have to <em>fight<\/em> not wanting to acknowledge stuff. I have to <em>fight<\/em> unforgiveness and anger\u2014when the Bible says, \u201cReject the root of bitterness, sprouting up, that it may devour many.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhere does bitterness come from? It\u2019s fermented unforgiveness and anger. And guess what it leads to? Bitterness leads to unrepentance and soul-corrosion. And that\u2019s why David says, \u201cI know the extent of my sin.\u201d Proverbs talks about the fact: \u201cHe who confesses a matter\u201d\u201428:13\u2014\u201cand forsakes it, finds favor.\u201d So, that means, in our marriages, we have to begin to talk honestly about stuff that happened in our past. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid talked about knowing his sin. He talks about the fact that God is justified in saying to him whatever He wants to say to him\u2014look at it. It says, \u201cAgainst You, and You only, have I sinned and have done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be justified in Your words.\u201d I like David\u2019s words when Nathan came to him, and he says, \u201cYou\u2019re the man.\u201d He says, \u201cI\u2019ve sinned against the Lord.\u201d He didn\u2019t have a paragraph of information to give out to give an atmosphere for the reasoning behind why he sinned. No, he owned his sin. He said, \u201cI have sinned against the Lord!\u201d You don\u2019t make any concession. No, you say, \u201cI have sinned!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Eric:<\/strong> Do you know how much relief can happen and healing can happen in people\u2019s lives if you would just say, \u201cI am so sorry for what I did, and I repent!\u201d? That\u2019s why God told the leaders in Job\u2014He said, \u201cRip your heart, not your garments,\u201d because they got used to\u2014you know, when something bad happened\u2014you know, they were so religious. They knew the religious thing to do was to rip their garments\u2014to look like they were devastated\u2014but in their heart, they were hard, and caked over, and no transformation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut Jesus Christ did not come for us to have the same old, nasty, funky, trifling, hard heart. He came\u2014based on Ezekiel 36, verses 25-27\u2014He said: \u201cI will sprinkle you clean with water. I will remove the heart of stone and put a heart of <em>flesh<\/em> in you. I will take the old spirit out of you, put a new spirit in you, put My Spirit on you, put My Word in you, and cause you to walk in My statutes.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen He gives you a new heart, He gives you receptivity\u2014that means a new value system, new affections, and your will being taken out of bondage to be able to serve Him\u2014so that, now, you can repent of your sin and you can own up to stuff. He did not come so that you could cake the new heart over with the old mess. [Clapping] That\u2019s why you got to own your stuff, instead of not admitting it\u2014then, it cakes over, cakes over, cakes over\u2014bondage gets deeper. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he goes down, and he says\u2014he says, \u201cAgainst You, and You alone, have I sinned.\u201d He is saying that to say, \u201cGod, ultimately, my sin is against You.\u201d That\u2019s great! You can\u2019t deal with your sin with man until you deal with your sin before God\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Eric:<\/strong> \u2014because, ultimately, it is His holiness that has been <em>infringed upon<\/em>. So, in dealing with God, it makes it real, in dealing with others, because if you deal with man, first and only, you\u2019re only concerned about the consequences and situation that got messed up by your sin. So, you\u2019re trying to clean up on your own. But when you go to God first, \u201cAgainst Thee, and Thee only, have I sinned,\u201d then, you trust Him, without your help, to work out, good or bad, what He\u2019s going to work out with your help. That means you don\u2019t try to fix stuff on your own. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, a repentant person submits to discipline. He submits to it. That\u2019s why he says, right here\u2014he\u2019s submitting to the discipline of the Lord, which brings us to our last point. The repentant person longs for long-term transformation. Look at what he says\u2014he says, \u201cBehold, You delight in truth in the inward being\u2026and teach me wisdom in the secret heart.\u201d This is crazy, right here, in a good way, because check it. When he says, \u201cDelight,\u201d he is talking about what God likes, inside of His people. He\u2019s not just talking about like on the outer crevices of His people. He says, \u201c...in the inward part\u201d\u2014he uses two terms. He says, \u201cinward part\u201d, and then, he said, \u201csecret places\u201d. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what he is saying here is, \u201cYou like it and You delight\u201d\u2014the word here means to emotionally take joy in someone, something, or some place. Now, he says, \u201cYou delight in truth.\u201d Now, truth, here in the Hebrew, doesn\u2019t just mean information, even though it involves information. The word, here for truth, means to have certainty. It means firmness, stability, faithfulness, fidelity\u2014which means commitment\u2014uprightness, integrity, faithfulness, and authenticity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I love this because this is some real-deal Christianity here. Why is it? Because he says, \u201cYou desire the places that I\u2019ve closed off from You to be reopened in my life for You to deal with.\u201d See, David is even getting beyond the sin of adultery in the passage. He\u2019s going to the deeper root of the things that led up to the adultery\u2014the type of heart that led up to the adultery, the type of mindset, and the other litany of things in his life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, you\u2019re looking at me funny. Let me see if I can make it plain. At the church, we had an exterminator. We bought the building. We didn\u2019t\u2014you know it\u2019s a 130-year-old building. It was all types of things\u2014factory\u2014all kinds of things. And we got some work done on it, and we got the first exterminator visit. Exterminator comes in; and he says, \u201cPastor, tell your team I need everything opened up\u2014every single thing that has a knob on it.\u201d I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says: \u201cPastor,\u201d \u2014he says, \u201c...because if I clean in these spots, but there is still mess in these closed spots\u2014when you open these spots, it will befoul the spots up here that I\u2019ve cleaned out. So, what I need you to do is I need you to open every single door in this building\u2014everything that has a knob on it\u2014because I\u2019m going to go on the inside of all of those places, and I\u2019m going to deal with every infestation\u2014but the only way I can get to them is if you open them all up.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>That\u2019s what Jesus is saying to you today, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you open your life?\u201d See, some of you all need to open up\u2014you say: \u201cNow, see, Jesus, I haven\u2019t opened this door in 20 years; but\u2014I don\u2019t even know what\u2019s in there anymore. I\u2019ve put some stuff just away.\u201d That\u2019s what Jesus Christ came to do. No matter where you are in life, and no matter how pristine you think you are, you are in desperate need of the cross of Christ. And that\u2019s what David says next, \u201cPurge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean.\u201d He said, \u201cWash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.\u201d He\u2019s like, \u201cGod, I want You to absolutely, unadulteratedly, fully cleanse me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019m glad, in the new covenant, we have the blood. Listen to this\u2014he says in verse 8\u2014I\u2019m closing\u2014he says: \u201cLet me hear joy and gladness. Let the bones that You have broken rejoice.\u201d He\u2019s been so deep in his sin\u2014he says, \u201cI can\u2019t believe how much I\u2019ve missed out on life.\u201d Let me tell you something\u2014when you don\u2019t repent of sin, you miss out on so many good things. And God is saying to you: \u201cI want you\u2014open up every area of your life. Come to Me, all you who are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly of heart; and you will find rest for your soul.\u201d Come to Him, and let it go! <br><br>Guess what the Gospel frees you to do\u2014to not worry about your sin anymore. That\u2019s what gives you the ability to repent\u2014is that Jesus already paid for it. Since He already paid for it, you might as well admit it. [Clapping]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell you what\u2014we were having church, onboard the cruise, with Eric Mason. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We were. I\u2019ll just read you some of the quotes of the folks who have been on the cruise. You know, I was just sitting here thinking about the fact that a couple of weeks ago we were on the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><sup>\u2122<\/sup> marriage cruise. Going on a cruise is, for a lot of us, it\u2019s kind of one of those once-in-a-lifetime\u2014you don\u2019t get to do it very often.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019ve hosted, now, three of these <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> cruises. It is a lot of fun, but it is\u2014in our case, I think it is one of the most informative, life-changing opportunities to spend some really fun days and evenings with the love of your life\u2014 walking around on deck, having conversations, not being interrupted by this shiny thing I\u2019ve got in my pocket\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> My cellphone\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014this screen\u2014this screen\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u2014it was off for three days. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Three days. Did you go through withdrawal? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I didn\u2019t! I didn\u2019t miss not looking at the email. I didn\u2019t go down and log-on for anything. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I just kept having fun with Mary Ann. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I want to read you a quote. This is from someone who just came. They\u2019ve been married for 29 years. They said, \u201cThe first day was somewhat awkward since we hadn\u2019t spent dedicated time with each other and without distractions.\u201d Then, they said the couple\u2019s \u201conion was slowly peeled off, one layer at a time. And by the end of the week, the <em>onion<\/em> had disappeared. [Laughter] Amen to this wonderful and eternal experience!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t think people can begin to realize this can be a transformational experience for an individual,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014for a couple, for, really, a family\u2014because you are going to gain things, on the cruise, that are going recalibrate you as you go back to experience life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And there are times in your marriage where you intentionally want to make some memories\u2014where you want to do some special things. He spoke about what seeking forgiveness really needs to look like and what are the characteristics of genuine repentance in a marriage. And here, with his message from Psalm 51, is Dr. Eric Mason. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Eric:<\/strong> Let\u2019s get it. Verse 1 [and following] says: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHave mercy on me, O God, according to Your steadfast love, according to Your abundant mercy. Blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquities and cleanse me from my sin; for I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Let the bones that You have broken rejoice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to talk about, tonight, of course, as you see, the characteristics of a repentant spouse. As I grow as a believer, and as I get to connect with Christians and Christians who grow and mature in different ways, we can become a big facade in our lives, where we\u2019re not willing to admit where we are because we\u2019ve become<em> skilled<\/em> at hiding where we actually are. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, there comes a time and there comes a need in our lives when we have to get to the point, as believers: \u201cWill we live our lives open and bare before the Lord?\u201d Are we going to be honest and open up ourselves before Him and the people around you? If you want to grow, if you want to develop, if you want to be better for His glory\u2014not a self-help message\u2014but a Gospel message\u2014where we begin to say, \u201cHey, God, I am sick and tired of being sick and tired; and I want to be open before You.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we come to this passage, which, I believe, is sort of the sine qua non of repentance in the Bible. It\u2019s one of those passages that play a phenomenal roll in us recognizing what repentance is and what repentance looks like. The word in the Old Testament usually for repentance that points out its principle here is the word <em>nicham<\/em> which points to the idea of turning the other direction. In the New Testament, the word is <em>metanoia<\/em>. The word <em>metanoia<\/em> doesn\u2019t just mean change the direction. It means to change your way of thinking about whatever you\u2019re thinking about that\u2019s opposite of what God already knows and embrace His mindset. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat points to the reality\u2014listen\u2014that without repentance, we are walking in a stronghold. How do I know that? Because Second Corinthians, Chapter 10, says that we must take every thought captive, in obedience to Christ, that which exalts itself against Him. So, the stronghold isn\u2019t the actual sin that we commit, but it\u2019s the mindset that shapes the execution of the sin that we commit. That stronghold barricades us in from turning from our sin and turning from the living God. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, David sins by committing adultery and murder. He comes to a point later, which we will get to, where he gets confronted with his sin by a friend that came and got in his grill\u2014in his face. He said, \u201cDavid, I want to tell you a story.\u201d He said, \u201cCome on, man, tell me a story. I love your stories, Nate.\u201d Nathan starts telling the story. He said, \u201cMan, there is this man. He had a whole bunch of sheep.\u201d He said, \u201cOkay. Okay.\u201d He said, \u201cAnd there was one who had one little sheep that he took care of\u2014beautiful, beautiful sheep.\u201d He said, \u201cOkay.\u201d \u201cThis dude that had a whole bunch of sheep came over, got with him, took his sheep, got rid of him, and put him with the other sheep\u2014even though, he had a whole bunch of sheep.\u201d David said, \u201cBring him here right now!\u201d He said, \u201cYou\u2019re the man.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, it\u2019s interesting that David had a lot of self-righteousness when it came to somebody else\u2019s sin; but when it came to him dealing with his sin, he\u2019s going to say, what we hear in the first part of this chapter\u2014which I think we all should call upon and work through, as people who are to be repentant spouses\u2014which brings me to my first point of\u2014if you\u2019re going to walk out the characteristics of a deeply-repentant spouse. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one: You must throw yourself on the character of God. Right here, David says, \u201cHave mercy on me, O God.\u201d I like the fact that he calls for God\u2019s mercy because he called on God\u2019s character before he dealt with his sin. This is very, very important because if you focus in on your sin first\u2014then, you\u2019ll get depressed. You\u2019ll get frustrated, and you\u2019ll feel locked in\u2014but if you put your mind on the character of God, then, you\u2019ll have encouragement to deal with your sin. But if you try to deal with your sin, without the character of God, you will get in deeper bondage. That\u2019s why you need the Gospel, not self-righteousness, because the Gospel is the willingness to submit ourselves to the beauty of the character of God so that Christ\u2019s righteousness can cover our sin and deal with it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we call on God\u2019s character, not our sin. You\u2019ve got to make sure God\u2019s\u2014you\u2019ve got to make sure\u2014in your life, no matter where you are\u2014and in your marriage, that the character of God and the perfections and attributes of God are driving your marriage, not just your sin, because if you just mention your sin to each other all the time, then, all you\u2019re going to do is argue about your sin: \u201cWell, you sinned against me.\u201d \u201cNo, you sinned against me.\u201d \u201cWell, the other day it was you.\u201d \u201cNow, today it was you.\u201d \u201cNo, you remember when you did...\u201d\u2014and you\u2019re just going\u2014back, and back, and back, and back. But <em>if you<\/em> focus on God\u2019s mercy and you look at the little bit that your spouse did to you, in light of the holiness of God and on your life, you say: \u201cGod, I deserve this. So, how am I going to add on and push on to them what You didn\u2019t give to me?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, my man David, he begins to throw himself and calls on the attributes that he needs. Then, after that, he says something beautiful. He says, \u201cAccording to Your steadfast love...\u201d I like that. That\u2019s the Hebrew word, <em>hesedh<\/em>. And that word means loyal love. Somebody say, \u201cLoyal love.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience:<\/strong> Loyal love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Eric:<\/strong> Loyal love points to this\u2014God\u2019s unconditional covenant with His people. That means He\u2019s faithful, even though we\u2019re not faithful. David isn\u2019t calling on family. He\u2019s not calling on\u2014like, \u201cGod, I\u2019ve been killing it for Your glory. I\u2019ve been spending time in the Word. I just think I just deserve some love right now.\u201d No, that\u2019s not what he does. What he does is he says: \u201cI know I\u2019ve messed up beyond the worst level of messing up. What I need is\u2014I need the God, right now, who will deal with me based on His commitment to covenant, not my failure of the covenant.\u201d See, that\u2019s what\u2019s so good about the new covenant through Christ, though\u2014is the new covenant, through Christ, is an unconditional covenant, where God does all the work of the covenant. We work <em>because<\/em> of His love, not working to <em>get<\/em> His love. He lays out, for us, this covenant love in this steadfast love. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, he says, again, \u201cAccording to your abundant mercy...\u201d Then, he begins to deal with his sin. Then, he begins to say, \u201cLord,\u201d\u2014he says: \u201cBlot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly\u201d\u2014he says, \u201cI want it all gone, God.\u201d He says, \u201cI don\u2019t want any trace of my mess\u201d\u2014just let me build a foundation. He said he doesn\u2019t want any of his mess to get in the way of his relationship with the living God. He says, \u201cCleanse me from my sins.\u201d So, he asked for full cleansing from his sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst thing, we see\u2014if you are going to be a deeply-repentant spouse\u2014is the attributes of God: God\u2019s mercy, God\u2019s love, God\u2019s grace, God\u2019s longsuffering, God\u2019s spirituality, God\u2019s omniscience, God\u2019s omnipresence\u2014His attributes must pervade a marriage because the more your mind is on the Lord and your marriage\u2014and not just the faults of your spouse\u2014then, you can deal with sin. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut then, next, number two: If you are going to succeed, the characteristics\u2014and this can apply to anyone, even though we are applying it specifically to a spouse\u2014but next point\u2014if you\u2019re going to walk in the characteristics of a deeply-repentant spouse\u2014number two: You must fully own the extent of your sin. <br><br>David says, \u201cI know my transgressions.\u201d Now, the word here for \u201cknow\u201d means to know something intimately. When he says, \u201cI know my sin,\u201d that means he is able to absolutely, unadulteratedly acknowledge what he did. That means he knows the sinfulness of his sin. He didn\u2019t try to say: \u201cWell, it wasn\u2019t like So-and-so over there. You know how he did or how she did....\u201d No, no, no. That\u2019s not what he\u2019s saying. He\u2019s saying: \u201cI\u2019m talking about I know my own transgressions. I know the sinfulness of my sin.\u201d See, you can\u2019t repent until you know how sinful your sin is. See, a part of the most authentic and powerful thing a Christian can do is own their sin. You can\u2019t even get <em>saved<\/em> until you own your sin! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what the Bible says\u2014that you have to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. You have to <em>acknowledge<\/em> that there is a sin issue for the cross to pay for sins\u2014but, as a believer, once you start walking with Him, you\u2019re provisionally certified and Kingdom-bound\u2014but you are still, practically, a mess. So, you better get used to learning how to repent. Some of us, in this house\u2014and I fight with it every day, myself. That\u2019s why I\u2019m yelling right now because I\u2019m preaching to myself [Laughter]\u2014that I have to <em>fight<\/em> self-righteousness! I have to <em>fight<\/em> not wanting to acknowledge stuff. I have to <em>fight<\/em> unforgiveness and anger\u2014when the Bible says, \u201cReject the root of bitterness, sprouting up, that it may devour many.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhere does bitterness come from? It\u2019s fermented unforgiveness and anger. And guess what it leads to? Bitterness leads to unrepentance and soul-corrosion. And that\u2019s why David says, \u201cI know the extent of my sin.\u201d Proverbs talks about the fact: \u201cHe who confesses a matter\u201d\u201428:13\u2014\u201cand forsakes it, finds favor.\u201d So, that means, in our marriages, we have to begin to talk honestly about stuff that happened in our past. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid talked about knowing his sin. He talks about the fact that God is justified in saying to him whatever He wants to say to him\u2014look at it. It says, \u201cAgainst You, and You only, have I sinned and have done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be justified in Your words.\u201d I like David\u2019s words when Nathan came to him, and he says, \u201cYou\u2019re the man.\u201d He says, \u201cI\u2019ve sinned against the Lord.\u201d He didn\u2019t have a paragraph of information to give out to give an atmosphere for the reasoning behind why he sinned. No, he owned his sin. He said, \u201cI have sinned against the Lord!\u201d You don\u2019t make any concession. No, you say, \u201cI have sinned!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Eric:<\/strong> Do you know how much relief can happen and healing can happen in people\u2019s lives if you would just say, \u201cI am so sorry for what I did, and I repent!\u201d? That\u2019s why God told the leaders in Job\u2014He said, \u201cRip your heart, not your garments,\u201d because they got used to\u2014you know, when something bad happened\u2014you know, they were so religious. They knew the religious thing to do was to rip their garments\u2014to look like they were devastated\u2014but in their heart, they were hard, and caked over, and no transformation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut Jesus Christ did not come for us to have the same old, nasty, funky, trifling, hard heart. He came\u2014based on Ezekiel 36, verses 25-27\u2014He said: \u201cI will sprinkle you clean with water. I will remove the heart of stone and put a heart of <em>flesh<\/em> in you. I will take the old spirit out of you, put a new spirit in you, put My Spirit on you, put My Word in you, and cause you to walk in My statutes.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen He gives you a new heart, He gives you receptivity\u2014that means a new value system, new affections, and your will being taken out of bondage to be able to serve Him\u2014so that, now, you can repent of your sin and you can own up to stuff. He did not come so that you could cake the new heart over with the old mess. [Clapping] That\u2019s why you got to own your stuff, instead of not admitting it\u2014then, it cakes over, cakes over, cakes over\u2014bondage gets deeper. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he goes down, and he says\u2014he says, \u201cAgainst You, and You alone, have I sinned.\u201d He is saying that to say, \u201cGod, ultimately, my sin is against You.\u201d That\u2019s great! You can\u2019t deal with your sin with man until you deal with your sin before God\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audience:<\/strong> Amen. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Eric:<\/strong> \u2014because, ultimately, it is His holiness that has been <em>infringed upon<\/em>. So, in dealing with God, it makes it real, in dealing with others, because if you deal with man, first and only, you\u2019re only concerned about the consequences and situation that got messed up by your sin. So, you\u2019re trying to clean up on your own. But when you go to God first, \u201cAgainst Thee, and Thee only, have I sinned,\u201d then, you trust Him, without your help, to work out, good or bad, what He\u2019s going to work out with your help. That means you don\u2019t try to fix stuff on your own. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, a repentant person submits to discipline. He submits to it. That\u2019s why he says, right here\u2014he\u2019s submitting to the discipline of the Lord, which brings us to our last point. The repentant person longs for long-term transformation. Look at what he says\u2014he says, \u201cBehold, You delight in truth in the inward being\u2026and teach me wisdom in the secret heart.\u201d This is crazy, right here, in a good way, because check it. When he says, \u201cDelight,\u201d he is talking about what God likes, inside of His people. He\u2019s not just talking about like on the outer crevices of His people. He says, \u201c...in the inward part\u201d\u2014he uses two terms. He says, \u201cinward part\u201d, and then, he said, \u201csecret places\u201d. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what he is saying here is, \u201cYou like it and You delight\u201d\u2014the word here means to emotionally take joy in someone, something, or some place. Now, he says, \u201cYou delight in truth.\u201d Now, truth, here in the Hebrew, doesn\u2019t just mean information, even though it involves information. The word, here for truth, means to have certainty. It means firmness, stability, faithfulness, fidelity\u2014which means commitment\u2014uprightness, integrity, faithfulness, and authenticity. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I love this because this is some real-deal Christianity here. Why is it? Because he says, \u201cYou desire the places that I\u2019ve closed off from You to be reopened in my life for You to deal with.\u201d See, David is even getting beyond the sin of adultery in the passage. He\u2019s going to the deeper root of the things that led up to the adultery\u2014the type of heart that led up to the adultery, the type of mindset, and the other litany of things in his life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, you\u2019re looking at me funny. Let me see if I can make it plain. At the church, we had an exterminator. We bought the building. We didn\u2019t\u2014you know it\u2019s a 130-year-old building. It was all types of things\u2014factory\u2014all kinds of things. And we got some work done on it, and we got the first exterminator visit. Exterminator comes in; and he says, \u201cPastor, tell your team I need everything opened up\u2014every single thing that has a knob on it.\u201d I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says: \u201cPastor,\u201d \u2014he says, \u201c...because if I clean in these spots, but there is still mess in these closed spots\u2014when you open these spots, it will befoul the spots up here that I\u2019ve cleaned out. So, what I need you to do is I need you to open every single door in this building\u2014everything that has a knob on it\u2014because I\u2019m going to go on the inside of all of those places, and I\u2019m going to deal with every infestation\u2014but the only way I can get to them is if you open them all up.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>That\u2019s what Jesus is saying to you today, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you open your life?\u201d See, some of you all need to open up\u2014you say: \u201cNow, see, Jesus, I haven\u2019t opened this door in 20 years; but\u2014I don\u2019t even know what\u2019s in there anymore. I\u2019ve put some stuff just away.\u201d That\u2019s what Jesus Christ came to do. No matter where you are in life, and no matter how pristine you think you are, you are in desperate need of the cross of Christ. And that\u2019s what David says next, \u201cPurge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean.\u201d He said, \u201cWash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.\u201d He\u2019s like, \u201cGod, I want You to absolutely, unadulteratedly, fully cleanse me.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I\u2019m glad, in the new covenant, we have the blood. Listen to this\u2014he says in verse 8\u2014I\u2019m closing\u2014he says: \u201cLet me hear joy and gladness. Let the bones that You have broken rejoice.\u201d He\u2019s been so deep in his sin\u2014he says, \u201cI can\u2019t believe how much I\u2019ve missed out on life.\u201d Let me tell you something\u2014when you don\u2019t repent of sin, you miss out on so many good things. And God is saying to you: \u201cI want you\u2014open up every area of your life. Come to Me, all you who are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly of heart; and you will find rest for your soul.\u201d Come to Him, and let it go! <br><br>Guess what the Gospel frees you to do\u2014to not worry about your sin anymore. That\u2019s what gives you the ability to repent\u2014is that Jesus already paid for it. Since He already paid for it, you might as well admit it. [Clapping]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Tell you what\u2014we were having church, onboard the cruise, with Eric Mason. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We were. I\u2019ll just read you some of the quotes of the folks who have been on the cruise. I\u2019ve got a quote here from a couple, where the wife has been asking God for her husband to lead, spiritually, in their relationship. She said, \u201cWe started praying, together, for the first time in our marriage, after more than a decade.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0That can happen in a week-long experience, where you\u2019re kind of sitting and soaking in\u2014not just the sun\u2014but in the Scriptures\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and you\u2019re hearing the Scriptures applied to the everyday issues you face in your marriage and family and, really, helped in applying them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You and I are going to be speaking on next year\u2019s cruise, along with Dr. Gary Chapman, the author of the book, <em>The Five Love Languages<\/em>.
