We\u2019ll talk today about men learning to submit and learning to step up. Stay tuned.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>. Thanks for joining us. You know, it\u2019s interesting that we\u2019re talking about fathering this week because, I think, if you ask a lot of guys today\u2014I think a lot of Christian guys want to step it up in this area. They want to be better fathers than the fathers they had; and they\u2019re trying to do it, and be there. Yet, as a culture, we\u2019re still running a deficit here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 There\u2019s a reason for that. I mean, a number of young men want to be better fathers than their fathers were because their fathers weren\u2019t there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They abandoned them, or their fathers divorced their mom, or maybe their fathers just did a poor job. So, they want to do something to really redeem what they didn\u2019t experience. But I do agree with you, Bob. I think this is a generation of young dads that really does want to step up and does want to assume the responsibility of fatherhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They have the desire; but maybe, what they\u2019re missing is the road map to know how to get there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, in my book, <em>Stepping Up: A Call to Courageous Manhood, <\/em>I talk about a quote\u2014and I forget who said this, but I think I got it out of <em>Newsweek <\/em>magazine\u2014which I\u2019m glad is now bankrupt and no longer available\u2014but anyway, it was a statement about men and boys. One of the quotes read, \u201cA boy without a father is like an explorer without a map.\u201d I\u2019ve given that\u2014now, around the country, in various messages I\u2019ve given around our \u201cStepping Up<sup>\u2122<\/sup>\u201d video event and our video series we have available, here at FamilyLife\u2014and the heads nod\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because every man was once a boy. He needed a map\u2014he needed a dad who would show him the way. There\u2019s a gentleman with us, here in the studio, who believes that, as well. Doug Wilson joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Doug, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Thanks so much. It\u2019s good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Doug is the Senior Fellow of Theology at New Saint Andrew\u2019s College in Moscow, Idaho\u2014been married for 37 years to his wife Nancy, has 16 grandchildren, who came from 3 children. I\u2019m going to start out, Doug, with one of my favorite questions I <em>love<\/em> to ask of men. You\u2019ve written a book called <em>Father Hunger<\/em>. I\u2019m going to target my question to you around the subject of fatherhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the question I usually ask\u2014I usually ask men, \u201cOut of everything you\u2019ve done in your life, what would you say is the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u201d Now, that\u2019s how I would usually ask the question; but to you, Doug\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Besides agreeing to be interviewed by you guys?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We toss softballs here, Doug! Don\u2019t give us that. Don\u2019t give us that. You\u2019ve been to tougher places\u2014much tougher places!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The question for you, Doug, is: \u201cAs a father of three\u2014out of all those years of being a father\u2014what would you say is the most courageous thing you have ever done?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Yes. That\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 C.S. Lewis said one time that, \u201cCourage is not a separate virtue, but it is a testing point for all of the virtues.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> It\u2019s where everything meets. It\u2019s the intersection for everything. I would have to say, first, in terms of my three kids\u2014and courage with regard to dealing with them\u2014has never been an issue. They\u2019ve just been great kids, and we\u2019ve had a wonderful relationship. Courage has been very much needed at issues relating to them\u2014involving them. The thing that comes to mind is that when our first child was born in 1976\u2014and in the late \u201870s, one time when Bekah, our oldest, was toddling around the living room\u2014she was just a little tink\u2014my wife Nancy said, \u201cDoug, I can\u2019t see handing her over to people, who don\u2019t know God, and saying, \u2018Here she is\u2014educate her. Teach her all about life; teach her everything\u2019.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that time, I knew virtually nothing about Christian education, but I knew I agreed with that\u2014I agreed with my wife on that. I\u2019m answering your question as though it were courage, but there\u2019s a thin line sometimes between courage and idiocy; right? [Laughter] I told my wife, \u201cWell, don\u2019t worry. We\u2019ll have a Christian school started by the time Bekah hits kindergarten.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A Christian school!?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, you\u2019re the pastor of a local church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> I\u2019m the pastor of a church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There were no plans on the drawing board for a school at that point; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You weren\u2019t talking about homeschooling?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You were talking about creating a school?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Building a school because there were no schooling options. With homeschooling, I don\u2019t know\u2014it\u2019s hard for me to recollect\u2014at that time, I\u2019m not sure that we\u2019d even heard of homeschooling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> This was the late \u201870s and it was not a \u201cthing\u201d. So, I told my wife\u2014I promised my wife\u2014that by the time Bekah hit kindergarten, we would have a Christian school started. The reason for that is I\u2019m convinced that Deuteronomy 6:4-9 says, \u201cYou will teach your children when you walk along the road, when you rise up, when you lie down.\u201d That tells you that the Word of God is the environment that\u2014Christian kids\u2014covenant kids\u2014ought to grow up in an environment dominated and controlled by the Word of God. That should be their native habitat.\u00a0 That should be the place where they live. Not only is that where they ought to grow up, but they ought to <em>love <\/em>it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things I tell parents all of the time is, \u201cYour job is not to get your kids to conform to the standard. Your job is to get your kids to <em>love<\/em> the standard.\u201d It\u2019s not enough to get them to just conform until they\u2019re 18; and then, they go away. You want them to internalize the standard. I\u2019ll never forget\u2014a number of years later after Logos School was started\u2014we opened Bekah\u2019s kindergarten year. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you really?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> We really did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How many kids came?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Nineteen\u2014there were four staff members, nineteen kids, and no money\u2014nineteen kids. The Lord was just extremely kind to us. We made it. The school was a thriving Christian school, and my grandkids are going there now\u2014school-aged grandkids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a wonderful thing, too. But when we started\u2014years later, I was at a board meeting. We were talking about some policy. Someone had proposed a policy\u2014I forget, even, what the policy was. One of the other board members, a friend of mine, said, \u201cNo; I\u2019m against this policy,\u201d\u2014and why\u2014he quoted a verse from Deuteronomy.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou shall not boil a kid in its mother\u2019s milk.\u201d \u201cWell, what did you mean?\u201d Well, the mother\u2019s milk is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re speaking, now, of a goat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> \u2014yes\u2014milk is given by God as nourishment\/life. The law there\u2014I think it\u2019s like the law of not muzzling the oxen.\u00a0 God\u2019s got bigger issues that He\u2019s teaching us through this. You shall not take that which God designed as an instrument of life and turn it into the instrument of death. Christian education is life. It\u2019s about life. It should be life. It should be received as life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou don\u2019t just want to have a high-standards Christian school. You want to have a high standards\/high morale Christian school. We wanted that from the beginning. To answer your question, basically, I was a young husband\u2014a young father who knew virtually nothing. My wife said, \u201cWe can\u2019t have godless people bring up our children.\u201d I agreed with that. I knew nothing other than that I agreed with that. Rashly, courageously, whatever\u2014in God\u2019s kindness\u2014I said, \u201cWell, we\u2019ll have a school started.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said, \u201cI will provide. I will be the provider here.\u201d I mean, we talked about provision already this week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And, \u201cI will protect.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re going to protect them and provide by having Christian education for them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Right. I sometimes tell people that a lot of Christian men need to learn a two-word prayer. That is: \u201cGeronimo! Amen.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just jump and trust!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Just jump and trust. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re talking about the office, the responsibility, the role of fathers as opposed to mothers. I think, sometimes, we take for granted some of the most basic definitions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I liked your definition of masculinity, which fuels the father\u2019s responsibility. Explain what masculinity is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> In this book\u2014I\u2019ve approached it different ways over the years\u2014in this book, I have the definition that, \u201cMasculinity is the glad assumption of sacrificial responsibility.\u201d \u201cMasculinity is the glad assumption of sacrificial responsibility.\u201d It\u2019s not just grudging acceptance. It\u2019s not a refusal to accept all of it. Jesus gave Himself to the end\u2014He didn\u2019t give Himself, mostly. He didn\u2019t agree to be flogged and then released. He went to the cross. He saved us by going to the cross and into the grave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBasically, what this means is that, \u201cHusbands, love your wives as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her,\u201d\u2014that means husbands need to be all-in. They need to be all-in, gladly. So: \u201cThis is the Lord we serve. This is what He is like. This is how He modeled it for us. Let\u2019s imitate that. Let\u2019s give ourselves to that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s another aspect to this; that is, authority flows to those who take responsibility. Authority flees those who try to evade responsibility. Jesus, it says, \u201c...taught with authority and not like the scribes.\u201d That\u2019s because He was a servant Lord\u2014a servant leader. He washed His disciples\u2019 feet. He gave Himself away. He gave Himself away, ultimately, on the cross; and He gave Himself away in His teaching ministry. He gave Himself away in His healing ministry. He gave Himself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen He gave Himself, people responded to Him by looking to Him as someone who had something to say\u2014someone who had real, genuine authority. Well, we are partial and imperfect in our imitation of that; but the same basic thing happens. When a husband gives himself away\u2014when he assumes responsibility, gladly, and he does it sacrificially\u2014authority flows to him. He doesn\u2019t have to demand it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if a husband hears a sermon on headship and submission in marriage or something\u2014and goes and talks to his wife, saying, \u201cWhy aren\u2019t you submitting?\u201d\u2014and jabs at the verse, with his finger, saying\u2014\u201cCan\u2019t you read?\u201d Well, the verses, around that, tell the husband what to do. Maybe, she\u2019s not the only one who can\u2019t read. [Laughter] What he must do is he must model it for her; right? If husbands think that wives need to learn how to submit, show her how easy it is; you know? Husband, you submit to the Word of God. You submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit. You submit to the example of the Lord Jesus, who took on the glad assumption of sacrificial responsibility. Show that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, then, Paul says in Ephesians 5 that, \u201cHe who loves his wife loves himself.\u201d I don\u2019t know why this is; but it\u2019s another divine sense-of-humor thing, I think. When men give themselves to their wives\u2014they can give with a teaspoon, and their wives give back with a snow shovel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Hmmm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> \u201cHe who loves his wife loves himself.\u201d God has built the world in such a way that\u2014I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ve met a Christian man capable of outgiving a Christian woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Doug, what I want to do is apply what you\u2019ve just said about masculinity being the glad assumption of sacrificial responsibility. As a father, I felt that. It was interesting, coming home after a full day\u2019s work, the glad assumption\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How glad were you? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, exactly! I wanted somebody to take care of me!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But it demanded my obedience to my heavenly Father, at that point, to gladly assume the sacrifice of being exhausted, tired, whipped\u2014and instead of doing what I wanted to do, at the end of the day, serve Barbara and serve my family by attempting\u2014however imperfectly I did it\u2014by attempting to be a father who paid attention to them and was all there\u2014and didn\u2019t unplug and become a vegetable in front of the TV, which I would have liked to have done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s because of your definition here: \u201c...the glad assumption of sacrificial\u201d\u2014and that\u2019s the key word\u2014\u201cembracing responsibility and fulfilling it,\u201d\u2014not quitting\u2014but continuing to plead your case, on behalf of your kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to ask you, here, because I was having a conversation recently with a friend of mine who\u2014I know, if this friend was sitting at the table, the friend would say: \u201cWhy is that a definition of masculinity? I mean, are not women to gladly assume sacrificial responsibility, as well?\u00a0 Why do we make that masculine?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> This is the response I would give, \u201cNote that I said this is masculinity, not maleness.\u201d God assigns us our roles. God tells us what we\u2019re to do in particular relations. There are several obvious examples. One is that the Church is the bride of Christ. That\u2019s a feminine entity\u2014the Church is a feminine entity. Yet, half of that entity is male. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the reasons why we ought not to have women preachers is because we are feminine. To disobey our husband, who said not to do that, is to usurp; right? So, I believe that you have a feminine entity that has males in it. You can have a masculine entity\u2014parenthood\u2014that has a man and a woman in it and a stubborn two year-old boy. Well, let\u2019s quote Proverbs to this two-year-old boy, \u201cMy son, obey the law of your mother.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, a boy is supposed to be submissive to his father and mother. We wanted to bring up our children in such a way that whenever my wife told my son to do something, I wanted him to see my shadow behind her. I stood with her.\u00a0 She had genuine authority over him. He was male. She was female; but she, together with me, was masculine, together with me, in that relationship. I understand masculinity and femininity as authority and submission. That imprints on a marriage one way\u2014the husband is to be masculine; the wife to be feminine, in <em>that<\/em> relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut when you go through other relationships and look at it\u2014masculinity and femininity are not exactly parallel or coterminous with male\/female. This is one of the things that trips feminists up. They think that Christians believe that God the Father is male, but He\u2019s not! God is a spirit. Maleness is a biological attribute, and God has no biology.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe <em>is <\/em>a father; right? He\u2019s ultimately masculine; but He\u2019s not male, at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> One of the things you talk about in your book is how we fail boys in preparing them to be fathers. Would you explain? Explain what you mean by that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Yes. Put it this way\u2014boys and men are simpletons. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s not very nice! That\u2019s not very nice!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re on our broadcast! Are you calling Bob and me\u2014[Laughter] \u2014yes, okay, go on.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Oftentimes, guys are like a dog pushing a rock. They\u2019re just a one-track mind, and they\u2019re doing what they\u2019re doing. Desperately, they need to have the nuances of life and the connections of life explained to them and modeled for them. So, boys don\u2019t grow to be men without mentoring by men. Boys become men by a process that\u2019s not simply biological maturation. Boys become men when men come alongside\u2014when men instruct; when men teach\u2014men who\u2019ve been through it\u2014and men who know that, \u201cWhen a woman says this. . .\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA dad takes his son aside\u2014who\u2019s been married for a year\u2014\u201cNow, son, I\u2019ve noticed a couple of times when you\u2019ve been over, you\u2019ve left. You just sort of left your wife to come out to the car after you. You just sort of disappeared. That\u2019s not a good idea.\u201d \u201cWell, why\u2014how come?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, you need to symbolize your care for her. You\u2019ve got to do certain things.\u201d A dad\u2014he can save a young guy a lot of time\u2014especially, if he\u2019s got money in the account with his son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> If the son\u2019s not going to be defensive and say, \u201cOh, geez!\u201d\u2014he\u2019s going to take it onboard. If the son wants to hear from his father, and the father has a wealth of information, he is mentoring. Other men do the same sort of thing. Boys becoming men is not simply a matter of time. Boys becoming men is a matter of discipleship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Modeling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Modeling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Mentoring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Mentoring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Shaping their characters and building into their lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> If I could go back to something you said\u2014I can\u2019t be interviewed by ya\u2019ll\u2014having written a book on this\u2014without honoring my father, from whom I learned a ton of this stuff. You were starting to brag on your dad. You didn\u2019t realize it; but as you were starting to brag about him, I was just getting ready to ask you to come back, here at the end of the broadcast \u2014 which I am doing now\u2014and to seat your father, if we could, across the table from you, right now\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014and to give him a tribute\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014a verbal tribute\u2014spoken directly to him about what he meant to you, as a boy growing up, and now, as a man and an older father, at your stage of life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Yes. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, the thing I\u2019d like to thank you, Dad, for is that I never, in all the years I was growing up, I never saw you and Mom raise your voices to each other\u2014never. I don\u2019t know what that would be like. I knew that you had issues\u2014things you had to work out\u2014but I knew about those things because you used them as illustrations when you gave talks. I wouldn\u2019t have known it from the home. The other thing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere were many other things, but you were dedicated to the absolute authority of the Word of God. So that whatever happened, all we had to do was find out what the verse said. After that, that was what we were going to do. You taught me that we are to have no problem passages. The only problem we have, with regard to a passage, is the exegesis\u2014what is it saying? But once we know what it is saying, we are to give ourselves to obedience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou taught me that obedience is joyful. It is our liberty. It is the way God designed us to live. Obedience is no more a restraint on us than wings are a restraint on a bird. You taught me\u2014over many, many years\u2014that God wants His people to shine light in the world and to be hungry to lead people to Christ. You\u2019re the most dedicated, effective, personal evangelist I\u2019ve ever heard of. I\u2019m just astonished at your gifts in that regard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou were a courageous father\u2014not just in physical things\u2014your service in the Korean War\u2014and how the Lord used you there and the things you did there. As a small boy, I was very proud of you for that sort of thing. You were easy to respect, easy to look up to, easy to honor. I never ever had to worry about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I also was very impressed and proud of your consistent commitment to the Word of God in situations where a Christian ministry that you were working for wanted to carry books that were written by liberal theologians and folks who were not any good for the soul. You took a stand and you wound up leaving the ministry that you were clearly called to and worked in another job for a year or two to provide for the family because you couldn\u2019t work in that ministry. You were the one who taught me that taking a stand over principle is what we\u2019re called to\u2014resolving it is God\u2019s responsibility. You taught me that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou taught me that the Christian life is a life of joy. The Christian life is a life of confessing your sins humbly. You taught me how to confess my sins. You taught me how to give myself to the Word of God. If I could end all of that by saying\u2014not only, Dad, am I grateful for all the things you gave me\u2014but I wanted to say two things: one, is that I love you very much; and two, I respect you You know, it\u2019s interesting that we\u2019re talking about fathering this week because, I think, if you ask a lot of guys today\u2014I think a lot of Christian guys want to step it up in this area. They want to be better fathers than the fathers they had; and they\u2019re trying to do it, and be there. Yet, as a culture, we\u2019re still running a deficit here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 There\u2019s a reason for that. I mean, a number of young men want to be better fathers than their fathers were because their fathers weren\u2019t there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They abandoned them, or their fathers divorced their mom, or maybe their fathers just did a poor job. So, they want to do something to really redeem what they didn\u2019t experience. But I do agree with you, Bob. I think this is a generation of young dads that really does want to step up and does want to assume the responsibility of fatherhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> They have the desire; but maybe, what they\u2019re missing is the road map to know how to get there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, in my book, <em>Stepping Up: A Call to Courageous Manhood, <\/em>I talk about a quote\u2014and I forget who said this, but I think I got it out of <em>Newsweek <\/em>magazine\u2014which I\u2019m glad is now bankrupt and no longer available\u2014but anyway, it was a statement about men and boys. One of the quotes read, \u201cA boy without a father is like an explorer without a map.\u201d I\u2019ve given that\u2014now, around the country, in various messages I\u2019ve given around our \u201cStepping Up<sup>\u2122<\/sup>\u201d video event and our video series we have available, here at FamilyLife\u2014and the heads nod\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014because every man was once a boy. He needed a map\u2014he needed a dad who would show him the way. There\u2019s a gentleman with us, here in the studio, who believes that, as well. It\u2019s good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Doug is the Senior Fellow of Theology at New Saint Andrew\u2019s College in Moscow, Idaho\u2014been married for 37 years to his wife Nancy, has 16 grandchildren, who came from 3 children. I\u2019m going to start out, Doug, with one of my favorite questions I <em>love<\/em> to ask of men. You\u2019ve written a book called <em>Father Hunger<\/em>. I\u2019m going to target my question to you around the subject of fatherhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the question I usually ask\u2014I usually ask men, \u201cOut of everything you\u2019ve done in your life, what would you say is the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u201d Now, that\u2019s how I would usually ask the question; but to you, Doug\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Besides agreeing to be interviewed by you guys?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We toss softballs here, Doug! Don\u2019t give us that. Don\u2019t give us that. You\u2019ve been to tougher places\u2014much tougher places!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> The question for you, Doug, is: \u201cAs a father of three\u2014out of all those years of being a father\u2014what would you say is the most courageous thing you have ever done?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Yes. That\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 C.S. Lewis said one time that, \u201cCourage is not a separate virtue, but it is a testing point for all of the virtues.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> It\u2019s where everything meets. It\u2019s the intersection for everything. I would have to say, first, in terms of my three kids\u2014and courage with regard to dealing with them\u2014has never been an issue. They\u2019ve just been great kids, and we\u2019ve had a wonderful relationship. Courage has been very much needed at issues relating to them\u2014involving them. The thing that comes to mind is that when our first child was born in 1976\u2014and in the late \u201870s, one time when Bekah, our oldest, was toddling around the living room\u2014she was just a little tink\u2014my wife Nancy said, \u201cDoug, I can\u2019t see handing her over to people, who don\u2019t know God, and saying, \u2018Here she is\u2014educate her. Teach her all about life; teach her everything\u2019.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that time, I knew virtually nothing about Christian education, but I knew I agreed with that\u2014I agreed with my wife on that. I\u2019m answering your question as though it were courage, but there\u2019s a thin line sometimes between courage and idiocy; right? [Laughter] I told my wife, \u201cWell, don\u2019t worry. We\u2019ll have a Christian school started by the time Bekah hits kindergarten.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> A Christian school!?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, you\u2019re the pastor of a local church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> I\u2019m the pastor of a church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> There were no plans on the drawing board for a school at that point; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You weren\u2019t talking about homeschooling?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You were talking about creating a school?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Building a school because there were no schooling options. With homeschooling, I don\u2019t know\u2014it\u2019s hard for me to recollect\u2014at that time, I\u2019m not sure that we\u2019d even heard of homeschooling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> This was the late \u201870s and it was not a \u201cthing\u201d. So, I told my wife\u2014I promised my wife\u2014that by the time Bekah hit kindergarten, we would have a Christian school started. The reason for that is I\u2019m convinced that Deuteronomy 6:4-9 says, \u201cYou will teach your children when you walk along the road, when you rise up, when you lie down.\u201d That tells you that the Word of God is the environment that\u2014Christian kids\u2014covenant kids\u2014ought to grow up in an environment dominated and controlled by the Word of God. That should be their native habitat.\u00a0 That should be the place where they live. Not only is that where they ought to grow up, but they ought to <em>love <\/em>it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things I tell parents all of the time is, \u201cYour job is not to get your kids to conform to the standard. Your job is to get your kids to <em>love<\/em> the standard.\u201d It\u2019s not enough to get them to just conform until they\u2019re 18; and then, they go away. You want them to internalize the standard. I\u2019ll never forget\u2014a number of years later after Logos School was started\u2014we opened Bekah\u2019s kindergarten year. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Did you really?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> We really did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> How many kids came?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Nineteen\u2014there were four staff members, nineteen kids, and no money\u2014nineteen kids. The Lord was just extremely kind to us. We made it. The school was a thriving Christian school, and my grandkids are going there now\u2014school-aged grandkids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s a wonderful thing, too. But when we started\u2014years later, I was at a board meeting. We were talking about some policy. Someone had proposed a policy\u2014I forget, even, what the policy was. One of the other board members, a friend of mine, said, \u201cNo; I\u2019m against this policy,\u201d\u2014and why\u2014he quoted a verse from Deuteronomy.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou shall not boil a kid in its mother\u2019s milk.\u201d \u201cWell, what did you mean?\u201d Well, the mother\u2019s milk is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re speaking, now, of a goat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> \u2014yes\u2014milk is given by God as nourishment\/life. The law there\u2014I think it\u2019s like the law of not muzzling the oxen.\u00a0 God\u2019s got bigger issues that He\u2019s teaching us through this. You shall not take that which God designed as an instrument of life and turn it into the instrument of death. Christian education is life. It\u2019s about life. It should be life. It should be received as life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou don\u2019t just want to have a high-standards Christian school. You want to have a high standards\/high morale Christian school. We wanted that from the beginning. To answer your question, basically, I was a young husband\u2014a young father who knew virtually nothing. My wife said, \u201cWe can\u2019t have godless people bring up our children.\u201d I agreed with that. I knew nothing other than that I agreed with that. Rashly, courageously, whatever\u2014in God\u2019s kindness\u2014I said, \u201cWell, we\u2019ll have a school started.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said, \u201cI will provide. I will be the provider here.\u201d I mean, we talked about provision already this week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And, \u201cI will protect.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re going to protect them and provide by having Christian education for them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Right. I sometimes tell people that a lot of Christian men need to learn a two-word prayer. That is: \u201cGeronimo! Amen.\u201d [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Just jump and trust!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Just jump and trust. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> We\u2019re talking about the office, the responsibility, the role of fathers as opposed to mothers. I think, sometimes, we take for granted some of the most basic definitions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I liked your definition of masculinity, which fuels the father\u2019s responsibility. Explain what masculinity is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> In this book\u2014I\u2019ve approached it different ways over the years\u2014in this book, I have the definition that, \u201cMasculinity is the glad assumption of sacrificial responsibility.\u201d \u201cMasculinity is the glad assumption of sacrificial responsibility.\u201d It\u2019s not just grudging acceptance. It\u2019s not a refusal to accept all of it. Jesus gave Himself to the end\u2014He didn\u2019t give Himself, mostly. He didn\u2019t agree to be flogged and then released. He went to the cross. He saved us by going to the cross and into the grave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBasically, what this means is that, \u201cHusbands, love your wives as Christ loved the Church and gave Himself up for her,\u201d\u2014that means husbands need to be all-in. They need to be all-in, gladly. So: \u201cThis is the Lord we serve. This is what He is like. This is how He modeled it for us. Let\u2019s imitate that. Let\u2019s give ourselves to that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s another aspect to this; that is, authority flows to those who take responsibility. Authority flees those who try to evade responsibility. Jesus, it says, \u201c...taught with authority and not like the scribes.\u201d That\u2019s because He was a servant Lord\u2014a servant leader. He washed His disciples\u2019 feet. He gave Himself away. He gave Himself away, ultimately, on the cross; and He gave Himself away in His teaching ministry. He gave Himself away in His healing ministry. He gave Himself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen He gave Himself, people responded to Him by looking to Him as someone who had something to say\u2014someone who had real, genuine authority. Well, we are partial and imperfect in our imitation of that; but the same basic thing happens. When a husband gives himself away\u2014when he assumes responsibility, gladly, and he does it sacrificially\u2014authority flows to him. He doesn\u2019t have to demand it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if a husband hears a sermon on headship and submission in marriage or something\u2014and goes and talks to his wife, saying, \u201cWhy aren\u2019t you submitting?\u201d\u2014and jabs at the verse, with his finger, saying\u2014\u201cCan\u2019t you read?\u201d Well, the verses, around that, tell the husband what to do. Maybe, she\u2019s not the only one who can\u2019t read. [Laughter] What he must do is he must model it for her; right? If husbands think that wives need to learn how to submit, show her how easy it is; you know? Husband, you submit to the Word of God. You submit to the leading of the Holy Spirit. You submit to the example of the Lord Jesus, who took on the glad assumption of sacrificial responsibility. Show that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd, then, Paul says in Ephesians 5 that, \u201cHe who loves his wife loves himself.\u201d I don\u2019t know why this is; but it\u2019s another divine sense-of-humor thing, I think. When men give themselves to their wives\u2014they can give with a teaspoon, and their wives give back with a snow shovel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Hmmm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> \u201cHe who loves his wife loves himself.\u201d God has built the world in such a way that\u2014I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ve met a Christian man capable of outgiving a Christian woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Doug, what I want to do is apply what you\u2019ve just said about masculinity being the glad assumption of sacrificial responsibility. As a father, I felt that. It was interesting, coming home after a full day\u2019s work, the glad assumption\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> How glad were you? [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, exactly! I wanted somebody to take care of me!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But it demanded my obedience to my heavenly Father, at that point, to gladly assume the sacrifice of being exhausted, tired, whipped\u2014and instead of doing what I wanted to do, at the end of the day, serve Barbara and serve my family by attempting\u2014however imperfectly I did it\u2014by attempting to be a father who paid attention to them and was all there\u2014and didn\u2019t unplug and become a vegetable in front of the TV, which I would have liked to have done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s because of your definition here: \u201c...the glad assumption of sacrificial\u201d\u2014and that\u2019s the key word\u2014\u201cembracing responsibility and fulfilling it,\u201d\u2014not quitting\u2014but continuing to plead your case, on behalf of your kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have to ask you, here, because I was having a conversation recently with a friend of mine who\u2014I know, if this friend was sitting at the table, the friend would say: \u201cWhy is that a definition of masculinity? I mean, are not women to gladly assume sacrificial responsibility, as well?\u00a0 Why do we make that masculine?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> This is the response I would give, \u201cNote that I said this is masculinity, not maleness.\u201d God assigns us our roles. God tells us what we\u2019re to do in particular relations. There are several obvious examples. One is that the Church is the bride of Christ. That\u2019s a feminine entity\u2014the Church is a feminine entity. Yet, half of that entity is male. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the reasons why we ought not to have women preachers is because we are feminine. To disobey our husband, who said not to do that, is to usurp; right? So, I believe that you have a feminine entity that has males in it. You can have a masculine entity\u2014parenthood\u2014that has a man and a woman in it and a stubborn two year-old boy. Well, let\u2019s quote Proverbs to this two-year-old boy, \u201cMy son, obey the law of your mother.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, a boy is supposed to be submissive to his father and mother. We wanted to bring up our children in such a way that whenever my wife told my son to do something, I wanted him to see my shadow behind her. I stood with her.\u00a0 She had genuine authority over him. He was male. She was female; but she, together with me, was masculine, together with me, in that relationship. I understand masculinity and femininity as authority and submission. That imprints on a marriage one way\u2014the husband is to be masculine; the wife to be feminine, in <em>that<\/em> relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut when you go through other relationships and look at it\u2014masculinity and femininity are not exactly parallel or coterminous with male\/female. This is one of the things that trips feminists up. They think that Christians believe that God the Father is male, but He\u2019s not! God is a spirit. Maleness is a biological attribute, and God has no biology.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe <em>is <\/em>a father; right? He\u2019s ultimately masculine; but He\u2019s not male, at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> One of the things you talk about in your book is how we fail boys in preparing them to be fathers. Would you explain? Explain what you mean by that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Yes. Put it this way\u2014boys and men are simpletons. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> That\u2019s not very nice! That\u2019s not very nice!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You\u2019re on our broadcast! Are you calling Bob and me\u2014[Laughter] \u2014yes, okay, go on.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Oftentimes, guys are like a dog pushing a rock. They\u2019re just a one-track mind, and they\u2019re doing what they\u2019re doing. Desperately, they need to have the nuances of life and the connections of life explained to them and modeled for them. So, boys don\u2019t grow to be men without mentoring by men. Boys become men by a process that\u2019s not simply biological maturation. Boys become men when men come alongside\u2014when men instruct; when men teach\u2014men who\u2019ve been through it\u2014and men who know that, \u201cWhen a woman says this. . .\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA dad takes his son aside\u2014who\u2019s been married for a year\u2014\u201cNow, son, I\u2019ve noticed a couple of times when you\u2019ve been over, you\u2019ve left. You just sort of left your wife to come out to the car after you. You just sort of disappeared. That\u2019s not a good idea.\u201d \u201cWell, why\u2014how come?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, you need to symbolize your care for her. You\u2019ve got to do certain things.\u201d A dad\u2014he can save a young guy a lot of time\u2014especially, if he\u2019s got money in the account with his son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> If the son\u2019s not going to be defensive and say, \u201cOh, geez!\u201d\u2014he\u2019s going to take it onboard. If the son wants to hear from his father, and the father has a wealth of information, he is mentoring. Other men do the same sort of thing. Boys becoming men is not simply a matter of time. Boys becoming men is a matter of discipleship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Modeling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Modeling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Mentoring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> Mentoring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Shaping their characters and building into their lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Doug:<\/strong> If I could go back to something you said\u2014I can\u2019t be interviewed by ya\u2019ll\u2014having written a book on this\u2014without honoring my father, from whom I learned a ton of this stuff. I don\u2019t know what that would be like. I knew that you had issues\u2014things you had to work out\u2014but I knew about those things because you used them as illustrations when you gave talks. I wouldn\u2019t have known it from the home. The other thing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere were many other things, but you were dedicated to the absolute authority of the Word of God. So that whatever happened, all we had to do was find out what the verse said. After that, that was what we were going to do. You taught me that we are to have no problem passages. The only problem we have, with regard to a passage, is the exegesis\u2014what is it saying? But once we know what it is saying, we are to give ourselves to obedience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou taught me that obedience is joyful. It is our liberty. It is the way God designed us to live. Obedience is no more a restraint on us than wings are a restraint on a bird. You taught me\u2014over many, many years\u2014that God wants His people to shine light in the world and to be hungry to lead people to Christ. You\u2019re the most dedicated, effective, personal evangelist I\u2019ve ever heard of. I\u2019m just astonished at your gifts in that regard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou were a courageous father\u2014not just in physical things\u2014your service in the Korean War\u2014and how the Lord used you there and the things you did there. As a small boy, I was very proud of you for that sort of thing. You were easy to respect, easy to look up to, easy to honor. I never ever had to worry about that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I also was very impressed and proud of your consistent commitment to the Word of God in situations where a Christian ministry that you were working for wanted to carry books that were written by liberal theologians and folks who were not any good for the soul. You took a stand and you wound up leaving the ministry that you were clearly called to and worked in another job for a year or two to provide for the family because you couldn\u2019t work in that ministry. You were the one who taught me that taking a stand over principle is what we\u2019re called to\u2014resolving it is God\u2019s responsibility. You taught me that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou taught me that the Christian life is a life of joy. The Christian life is a life of confessing your sins humbly. You taught me how to confess my sins. You taught me how to give myself to the Word of God.
