Don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, Dr. Michael Haykin joins us.\u00a0\u00a0 Is that the case, Michael?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That we kind of fantasize or romanticize?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We glamorize history.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes, I think part of it has to do with the movies\u2014the way that Hollywood has presented the past.\u00a0 It can\u2019t get into some of the challenges\u2014the smells, for example\u2014that would have confronted the average person living in the past\u2014the pain that most people lived with\u2014physical pain.\u00a0 There were no pain killers; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 We forget those sorts of things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0I think one reason why we do tend to idealize or romanticize these relationships is because we have letters that don\u2019t sound like the letters that we write to one another today.\u00a0 Do you know what I mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, they were thoughtful letters because they didn\u2019t have a spell check and a quick-erase button to hit on a computer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No email, no cell phones, no instant communication.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0They had to sit down with a piece of parchment, and permanent ink, and thoughtfully craft those words on a piece of paper.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 In fact, I have often heard it said that some of these letters that were written in times past were often\u2014someone would sit down and do a draft of the letter before they would actually write the letter in a format that they would send.\u00a0 Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 That would be true, but probably not with many of these letters because these letters are not intended for\u2014in the eyes of the writers\u2014for permanency, in one sense.\u00a0 They are intended for the eyes, alone, of the individual.\u00a0 That, in fact, is one of the challenges of reading these letters.\u00a0 Some of my favorites in here are the letters of Samuel and Sarah Pearce.\u00a0 He\u2019s often described as the Brainerd\u2014the Baptist Brainerd\u2014because it is just a powerful life\u201470 years of piety, crammed into 10\u2014or like Jim Elliot, or Robert Murray M\u2019Cheyne. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, he was a courageous warrior for the faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen; very much so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Some of our listeners are probably wondering, \u201cHow does this guy know all of these facts about Samuel Pearce?\u201d\u00a0 Well he is a Church historian.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We didn\u2019t make that clear, at the beginning; did we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We didn\u2019t make that clear, at the beginning.\u00a0 He has written a book called <em>The Christian Lover,<\/em> and it is about some of these letters that were written.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So Samuel Pearce, living in England\u2014friend of William Carey\u2014he is married to his wife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sarah.\u00a0 They had met at the church where he was pastoring.\u00a0 He went to a church in downtown Birmingham, England, in a very heavy industrial area or an area that was becoming that way.\u00a0 Most of his congregation were illiterate, and so he starts Sunday schools to start to teach them.\u00a0 He meets her within a year of his becoming pastor there.\u00a0 They are married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce he became involved in the missionary endeavors that Carey was involved in, he was frequently traveling\u2014thus, the letters then, as a vehicle for making himself present in his wife\u2019s life, when he is actually away\u2014absent, on preaching missions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, are these letters\u2014I hate to sound crass here but\u2014smarmy kind of gooey romance?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Smarmy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, some love letters just have that kind of a gooey, sentimental, \u201cOh my dear Darling,\u201d \u2014this and that stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 These guys were writing from the frontlines of battle, in many regards, in ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>They are.\u00a0 Yes, they are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So were they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are they smarmy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I am not sure I would ever use the word \u201csmarmy\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Some of them sound like they come out of a Jane Austen novel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, really? So they are really\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s the same period. Jane Austen is writing about ten years after him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here is one of the letters that you have included in the book.\u00a0 This is from Samuel to Sarah, written in London, September 7, 1795.\u00a0 He writes:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEvery day improves not only my tenderness but my esteem for you.\u00a0 Called, as I now am, to mingle with much society and all its orders, I have daily opportunity of making remarks on human temper.\u00a0 And after all I have seen, and through my judgment, as well as my affections, still approves of you as the best of women for me.\u00a0 We have been too long united by conjugal ties to admit a suspicion of flattery in our correspondent conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, is that smarmy right there, Bob?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, that\u2014that\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is a good line there; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I like that line. Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWe have been too long united by conjugal ties to admit a suspicion of flattery in our correspondence or conversation.\u00a0 I begin to count the days, which I hope will bring me to a re-enjoyment of your dear company.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whew!\u00a0 [Laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She probably smiled when she read that; don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would think so.\u00a0 You mentioned before we came into the studio that Samuel Pearce had a unique love for his wife\u2014that is displayed in these letters.\u00a0 What do we pick up about a biblical approach of a man\u2019s love for his wife as we read what he has written?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael: <\/strong>\u00a0Well, I think what you find is\u2014this sort of language is what you would typically associate with courtship\u2014with the period just prior to marriage and then, maybe, just a few months after.\u00a0 What you find in Pearce is\u2014there is a sustained passion for his wife that deepens as the years go by.\u00a0 For me, Pearce has been a model. Reading his letters to his wife\u2014and I have transcribed most of those letters\u2014he is modeling, for me, what my relationship needs to be with my wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, do you write letters like this to your wife?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Not exactly in that sort of language, but I do write letters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How often?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Usually, once a week because I come down to Southern.\u00a0 Before I leave, I will actually write her a card that I will leave on the dresser.\u00a0 I leave, usually on a Wednesday morning.\u00a0 Around four in the morning, she is still asleep.\u00a0 So, she will get the card when she gets up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>For some of our listeners, just a good letter, here at Valentine\u2019s Day, would be a home run.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0I\u2019m thinking of the folks who attend the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage conference.\u00a0 One of the projects we have couples do is write a love letter as a part of the conference.\u00a0 For many of these couples, it has been the duration of their marriage since they have written anything out in their own hand to one another.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have heard from couples, years later. That love letter is a treasure\u2014something that they would go grab out of the house if the house was burning down.\u00a0 There is something about our expression of love for one another that really binds us together; isn\u2019t there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes. It is interesting these love letters have an enduring quality that can communicate love to the next generation. There was a couple who went to our conference, a number of years ago, in another city.\u00a0 I was recently with this couple in Atlanta.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mm, hmm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The wife had pulled out her husband\u2019s love letter out of her purse.\u00a0 Her teenage daughter saw the letter and wanted to hear about the letter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She still had it in her purse after how many years?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, she kept it.\u00a0 It had been, I think, close to 25 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She brought it out so she could show it to you at the lunch; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She didn\u2019t carry it around in her purse every day; did she?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0Really!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I think the teenage daughter saw how it had been read several times.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>[Laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The teenage daughter started reading that love letter and was, \u201cWow! This is hot!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201cDad said this to you?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It marked a new beginning that this couple had, over 25years ago, at a <em>Weekend to Remember,<\/em> because there were things expressed that had been hidden in the heart.\u00a0 That is what really you are talking about here, Michael, as you share these love letters.\u00a0 We need to get our love out in the open and express it for our spouse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now some of the letters you have included in the book are expressions of love from one person to another\u2014where the other person did not respond or reciprocate; aren\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, there is.\u00a0 One of them is a letter of a man named Benjamin Beddome\u2014he was a very well-known Baptist minister\u201418<sup>th<\/sup> century hymn writer\u2014his letter of proposal to a woman named Anne Steele.\u00a0 He quotes John Milton\u2019s formation\u2014where God forms Eve for Adam in the Garden.\u00a0 He quotes his text.\u00a0 It is quite, quite powerful.\u00a0 Anyway, she refuses him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She turned him down!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 She turns him down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She was a hymn writer. He was a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She is a hymn writer and her response was\u2014later, her sister asked her, \u201cWhy would you turn such a man down?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWell, I looked over into that field,\u201d\u2014and she is talking about the field of marriage with Benjamin\u2014\u201cand all I saw were thorns and prickles.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, even though he wrote a good letter, he came out\u2014he didn\u2019t quite have it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Exactly! There is more to marriage than being able to write a good love letter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, Thomas Charles and Sally Jones\u2014it worked out a little better for them; didn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, again he is a great preacher\u2014a Calvinistic Methodist in Bala, North Wales.\u00a0 He is smitten with her, and she is not taken with him.\u00a0 It takes a couple of years before she starts to warm up and come around.\u00a0 But he perseveres.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He pursues her with letters\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He pursues her with letters.\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2014and, ultimately\u2014? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She is won over.\u00a0 They had some connection\u2014they met each other, from time to time.\u00a0 Ultimately, she recognizes that this is the man whom God has called.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>For some of our single listeners, this may have given them courage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am thinking of some guys, who may be listening right now, who are single\u2014who need to pull out a pen and paper.\u00a0 If they are trying to really persuade a young lady, in their own direction, then, perhaps, they need to think about crafting a\u2014not a swarmy\u2014what did you call it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Smarmy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014a smarmy letter?\u00a0 Not a smarmy letter, but a sweet letter\u2014a letter of courtship\u2014a letter of interest.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Listen to what Thomas Charles wrote to Sally Jones. He said, \u201cI now put in execution, writing you, and solicit the favor of a correspondence with you until such time as kind Providence indulges me with an interview, which on my part, is most ardently desired.\u201d\u00a0 So, basically, \u201cCan I write to you before we get a date?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, he writes: \u201cYou are the only person that I ever saw and the first I ever addressed on the subject, with whom, I thought I could spend my life in happy union and felicity and, for whom, I possess a particular affection and esteem, requisite for conjugal happiness. You are the only temporal blessing I have, for some time past, asked with importunity, of the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, he says \u201cYou\u2019re the one for me!\u201d\u00a0 I mean, he is saying that, \u201cYou\u2019re the only person I ever saw and the first I have addressed on the subject.\u201d\u00a0 Imagine that expression of desire and purity. Do you think, in our culture today, how many guys could say, \u201cYou\u2019re the only women I have ever seen and had this kind of affection for or been drawn to in this way\u201d?\u00a0 He writes and requests, \u201cI hope that your determination will happily convince me that the Lord\u2019s answer is favorable.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, after the knot is tied, everybody who is married, knows that there can be conflict in a marriage relationship. You tell one story of John Broadus.\u00a0 Is that his name?\u00a0 Is that correct?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>John Broadus was one of the founding four men of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where I teach\u2014a name that is renowned, in Southern Baptist circles, for his homiletics.\u00a0\u00a0 He had a textbook on homiletics that is well-known.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, he may have been known for his theology; but he had a letter that had a disclaimer on it that said, \u201cRead with care\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Because why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, once you get into the letter, you suddenly find that he is away.\u00a0 I think he is in Virginia; and his wife is, back, in Kentucky.\u00a0 There has obviously been a quarrel between them before he left.\u00a0 He is, basically, asking for forgiveness.\u00a0 It is not just, \u201cPlease forgive me,\u201d it is, \u201cPlease, please!\u201d\u00a0 It goes on for a number of lines where he is repeating the same thing, \u201cI do love you.\u00a0 I dearly love you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can obviously see why a Victorian\u2014who are very prudish in some of these matters were\u2014this is not the sort of thing you want for PR going out about a very well-known public figure\u2014thus, the \u201cRead with care.\u201d\u00a0 Again, it shows you that, in even the best of marriages, there will be times of conflict and tension.\u00a0 The critical question is dealing with those things, biblically.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, how are you going to handle it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let me read just a portion of one of John Broadus\u2019 letters to his wife\u2014this written in the middle of the Civil War\u2014Wednesday, September 2, 1863.\u00a0 He writes to her and says:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOh, my Darling! The love of my life is bound up in your love. Tell me\u2014tell me that, without reserve, from a full, overflowing heart\u2014you love me and that you will always love me with your whole heart!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I am happy; and there is nothing Earth can give or take away that shall render me really unhappy.\u00a0 For are we not both trying, amid all our weaknesses, to trust in the yet loftier and richer love of God our Savior? Then love me, Lottie, love me! See how much more you can love me! I claim to deserve it only on one ground\u2014that I love you.\u00a0 Love me, dearest.\u00a0 Love me! Love me! Love me!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This written by a theologian.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Then he goes on to say: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am unwilling to cease writing.\u00a0 I want to keep begging for you to love me.\u00a0 Not that I doubt you, dearest.\u00a0 Oh, no\u2014fond, faithful, true, self-sacrificing, devoted wife, gentle, tender, sweetheart wife.\u00a0 I know that you love me dearly; and for that very reason, I want you to love me more, dearest, more.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhile I write, I feel not so far distant; and when I stop, the wires seem to be cut and the blank impassable space stretches out between us.\u00a0 Lottie, won\u2019t you love me? Ever tenderly yours, John Broadus\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let me ask you a question about that, Michael.\u00a0 You listen to a letter where he is saying \u201cLove me.\u00a0 Love me.\u00a0 Love me.\u201d\u00a0 Does that concern you that maybe he was a little pre-occupied with her loving him, instead of him expressing his love for her? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It could be taken that way, if it is read out of context, but I think I have read enough of the letters of Broadus.\u00a0 I read about 25 or 30 of them\u2014maybe, even more to his first wife, Lottie.\u00a0 There is more going on in their marriage than simply that.\u00a0 I take it there has been a conflict.\u00a0\u00a0 He has come away, and he is trying to resolve that.\u00a0 The difficulty of resolving that\u2014when there is no other means of communication, beyond a pen and paper\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How long would it have taken that letter to have gotten back to her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Probably the best part of a week, I would think, depending on where he was.\u00a0 It is in the middle of the Civil War. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You also reflect some more contemporary letters.\u00a0 In fact, you go to the great British doctor\u2014the prince of preachers\u2014Martyn Lloyd-Jones\u2014and found some of his love letters to his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There is one.\u00a0 Well, there are a few that are being reprinted.\u00a0 One of the <em>Banner of Truth<\/em> books, of the letters of Lloyd-Jones, came out.\u00a0 I found this letter in there, in which he talks about how he is crazy about his wife.\u00a0 He is away on a trip, across the Atlantic, and she is back in Wales.\u00a0 What we know about their marriage is\u2014 that after that trip, he vowed he would never take another trip of such length, without taking her along with him.\u00a0 He was away for about six weeks to two months, I think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We can get this picture because I have read Lloyd-Jones\u2019 sermons. I have listened to some of his preaching. You would not think of him as a romantic, as you listen to him; would you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 This was a surprise when I read through that volume of letters. Lloyd- Jones, probably in terms of his understanding of ministry in certain areas of life and theology, has been an enormous influence on me, personally.\u00a0 What a surprise to find that letter.\u00a0 So, when I was drawing this volume up, with my daughter, I thought: \u201cMan!\u00a0 We have got to include that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am just going to read a portion of it, as well. This was written on the 25<sup>th <\/sup>of September, 1939\u2014Martyn to Bethan Lloyd-Jones: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dear Bethan, Thank you for your letter of this morning, though I am very angry that you should have been up until 11:30 p.m.writing it! I see that you are quite incorrigible. The idea that I shall become used to being without you is really funny.\u00a0 I could speak for a long time on this subject as I have told you many, many times.\u00a0 The passing of years does nothing but deepen and intensify my love for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I think of those days in London, in 1925 and 1926, when I thought that no greater love was possible, I could laugh!\u00a0 But honestly, during the last year, I have come to believe that it was not possible for a man to love his wife more than I loved you.\u00a0 Yet, I see that there is no end to love and that it is still true that absence makes the heart grow fonder.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am quite certain that there is no lover, anywhere, writing to a girl, who is quite as mad about her as I am.\u00a0 Indeed, I pity those lovers who are not married. Well, I\u2019d better put a curb to things or I shall spend the night writing to you, without a word of news.\u00a0 Ever yours, Martyn\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, what I get out of that letter is the maturity of love.\u00a0 What he basically said was\u2014when he started, it was puppy love.\u00a0 Now, he compares what he has for his wife and there is no comparison. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you\u2019re really sharing in your book here, Michael, is example after example of letters that come from the heart\u2014that are expressed\u2014not just a fond affection, but there is also great theology.\u00a0 These letters point people to God and remind their spouses of the truth of God\u2019s Word. I am thinking of the illustration of 1,600 letters by this guy.\u00a0 For some of our listeners, you just need to write one.\u00a0 You need to write one love letter to your wife, or to your husband, and then, may I challenge you to read it to them, face to face.\u00a0 If you go to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am going to be at the conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, Dr. Michael Haykin joins us.\u00a0\u00a0 Is that the case, Michael?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That we kind of fantasize or romanticize?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We glamorize history.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh yes, I think part of it has to do with the movies\u2014the way that Hollywood has presented the past.\u00a0 It can\u2019t get into some of the challenges\u2014the smells, for example\u2014that would have confronted the average person living in the past\u2014the pain that most people lived with\u2014physical pain.\u00a0 There were no pain killers; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 We forget those sorts of things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0I think one reason why we do tend to idealize or romanticize these relationships is because we have letters that don\u2019t sound like the letters that we write to one another today.\u00a0 Do you know what I mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, they were thoughtful letters because they didn\u2019t have a spell check and a quick-erase button to hit on a computer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No email, no cell phones, no instant communication.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0They had to sit down with a piece of parchment, and permanent ink, and thoughtfully craft those words on a piece of paper.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 In fact, I have often heard it said that some of these letters that were written in times past were often\u2014someone would sit down and do a draft of the letter before they would actually write the letter in a format that they would send.\u00a0 Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 That would be true, but probably not with many of these letters because these letters are not intended for\u2014in the eyes of the writers\u2014for permanency, in one sense.\u00a0 They are intended for the eyes, alone, of the individual.\u00a0 That, in fact, is one of the challenges of reading these letters.\u00a0 Some of my favorites in here are the letters of Samuel and Sarah Pearce.\u00a0 He\u2019s often described as the Brainerd\u2014the Baptist Brainerd\u2014because it is just a powerful life\u201470 years of piety, crammed into 10\u2014or like Jim Elliot, or Robert Murray M\u2019Cheyne. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, he was a courageous warrior for the faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen; very much so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Some of our listeners are probably wondering, \u201cHow does this guy know all of these facts about Samuel Pearce?\u201d\u00a0 Well he is a Church historian.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We didn\u2019t make that clear, at the beginning; did we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We didn\u2019t make that clear, at the beginning.\u00a0 He has written a book called <em>The Christian Lover,<\/em> and it is about some of these letters that were written.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So Samuel Pearce, living in England\u2014friend of William Carey\u2014he is married to his wife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sarah.\u00a0 They had met at the church where he was pastoring.\u00a0 He went to a church in downtown Birmingham, England, in a very heavy industrial area or an area that was becoming that way.\u00a0 Most of his congregation were illiterate, and so he starts Sunday schools to start to teach them.\u00a0 He meets her within a year of his becoming pastor there.\u00a0 They are married.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce he became involved in the missionary endeavors that Carey was involved in, he was frequently traveling\u2014thus, the letters then, as a vehicle for making himself present in his wife\u2019s life, when he is actually away\u2014absent, on preaching missions. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, are these letters\u2014I hate to sound crass here but\u2014smarmy kind of gooey romance?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Smarmy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, some love letters just have that kind of a gooey, sentimental, \u201cOh my dear Darling,\u201d \u2014this and that stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 These guys were writing from the frontlines of battle, in many regards, in ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>They are.\u00a0 Yes, they are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So were they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are they smarmy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I am not sure I would ever use the word \u201csmarmy\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Some of them sound like they come out of a Jane Austen novel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, really? So they are really\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s the same period. Jane Austen is writing about ten years after him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here is one of the letters that you have included in the book.\u00a0 This is from Samuel to Sarah, written in London, September 7, 1795.\u00a0 He writes:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEvery day improves not only my tenderness but my esteem for you.\u00a0 Called, as I now am, to mingle with much society and all its orders, I have daily opportunity of making remarks on human temper.\u00a0 And after all I have seen, and through my judgment, as well as my affections, still approves of you as the best of women for me.\u00a0 We have been too long united by conjugal ties to admit a suspicion of flattery in our correspondent conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, is that smarmy right there, Bob?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, that\u2014that\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is a good line there; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I like that line. Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWe have been too long united by conjugal ties to admit a suspicion of flattery in our correspondence or conversation.\u00a0 I begin to count the days, which I hope will bring me to a re-enjoyment of your dear company.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whew!\u00a0 [Laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She probably smiled when she read that; don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would think so.\u00a0 You mentioned before we came into the studio that Samuel Pearce had a unique love for his wife\u2014that is displayed in these letters.\u00a0 What do we pick up about a biblical approach of a man\u2019s love for his wife as we read what he has written?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael: <\/strong>\u00a0Well, I think what you find is\u2014this sort of language is what you would typically associate with courtship\u2014with the period just prior to marriage and then, maybe, just a few months after.\u00a0 What you find in Pearce is\u2014there is a sustained passion for his wife that deepens as the years go by.\u00a0 For me, Pearce has been a model. Reading his letters to his wife\u2014and I have transcribed most of those letters\u2014he is modeling, for me, what my relationship needs to be with my wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, do you write letters like this to your wife?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Not exactly in that sort of language, but I do write letters. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How often?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Usually, once a week because I come down to Southern.\u00a0 Before I leave, I will actually write her a card that I will leave on the dresser.\u00a0 I leave, usually on a Wednesday morning.\u00a0 Around four in the morning, she is still asleep.\u00a0 So, she will get the card when she gets up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>For some of our listeners, just a good letter, here at Valentine\u2019s Day, would be a home run.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0I\u2019m thinking of the folks who attend the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage conference.\u00a0 One of the projects we have couples do is write a love letter as a part of the conference.\u00a0 For many of these couples, it has been the duration of their marriage since they have written anything out in their own hand to one another.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have heard from couples, years later. That love letter is a treasure\u2014something that they would go grab out of the house if the house was burning down.\u00a0 There is something about our expression of love for one another that really binds us together; isn\u2019t there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes. It is interesting these love letters have an enduring quality that can communicate love to the next generation. There was a couple who went to our conference, a number of years ago, in another city.\u00a0 I was recently with this couple in Atlanta.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mm, hmm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The wife had pulled out her husband\u2019s love letter out of her purse.\u00a0 Her teenage daughter saw the letter and wanted to hear about the letter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She still had it in her purse after how many years?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, she kept it.\u00a0 It had been, I think, close to 25 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She brought it out so she could show it to you at the lunch; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She didn\u2019t carry it around in her purse every day; did she?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0Really!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I think the teenage daughter saw how it had been read several times.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>[Laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The teenage daughter started reading that love letter and was, \u201cWow! This is hot!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201cDad said this to you?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It marked a new beginning that this couple had, over 25years ago, at a <em>Weekend to Remember,<\/em> because there were things expressed that had been hidden in the heart.\u00a0 That is what really you are talking about here, Michael, as you share these love letters.\u00a0 We need to get our love out in the open and express it for our spouse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now some of the letters you have included in the book are expressions of love from one person to another\u2014where the other person did not respond or reciprocate; aren\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, there is.\u00a0 One of them is a letter of a man named Benjamin Beddome\u2014he was a very well-known Baptist minister\u201418<sup>th<\/sup> century hymn writer\u2014his letter of proposal to a woman named Anne Steele.\u00a0 He quotes John Milton\u2019s formation\u2014where God forms Eve for Adam in the Garden.\u00a0 He quotes his text.\u00a0 It is quite, quite powerful.\u00a0 Anyway, she refuses him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She turned him down!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 She turns him down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She was a hymn writer. He was a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She is a hymn writer and her response was\u2014later, her sister asked her, \u201cWhy would you turn such a man down?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWell, I looked over into that field,\u201d\u2014and she is talking about the field of marriage with Benjamin\u2014\u201cand all I saw were thorns and prickles.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So, even though he wrote a good letter, he came out\u2014he didn\u2019t quite have it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Exactly! There is more to marriage than being able to write a good love letter. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, Thomas Charles and Sally Jones\u2014it worked out a little better for them; didn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, again he is a great preacher\u2014a Calvinistic Methodist in Bala, North Wales.\u00a0 He is smitten with her, and she is not taken with him.\u00a0 It takes a couple of years before she starts to warm up and come around.\u00a0 But he perseveres.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He pursues her with letters\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He pursues her with letters.\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2014and, ultimately\u2014? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She is won over.\u00a0 They had some connection\u2014they met each other, from time to time.\u00a0 Ultimately, she recognizes that this is the man whom God has called.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>For some of our single listeners, this may have given them courage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am thinking of some guys, who may be listening right now, who are single\u2014who need to pull out a pen and paper.\u00a0 If they are trying to really persuade a young lady, in their own direction, then, perhaps, they need to think about crafting a\u2014not a swarmy\u2014what did you call it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Smarmy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014a smarmy letter?\u00a0 Not a smarmy letter, but a sweet letter\u2014a letter of courtship\u2014a letter of interest.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Listen to what Thomas Charles wrote to Sally Jones. He said, \u201cI now put in execution, writing you, and solicit the favor of a correspondence with you until such time as kind Providence indulges me with an interview, which on my part, is most ardently desired.\u201d\u00a0 So, basically, \u201cCan I write to you before we get a date?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, he writes: \u201cYou are the only person that I ever saw and the first I ever addressed on the subject, with whom, I thought I could spend my life in happy union and felicity and, for whom, I possess a particular affection and esteem, requisite for conjugal happiness. You are the only temporal blessing I have, for some time past, asked with importunity, of the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, he says \u201cYou\u2019re the one for me!\u201d\u00a0 I mean, he is saying that, \u201cYou\u2019re the only person I ever saw and the first I have addressed on the subject.\u201d\u00a0 Imagine that expression of desire and purity. Do you think, in our culture today, how many guys could say, \u201cYou\u2019re the only women I have ever seen and had this kind of affection for or been drawn to in this way\u201d?\u00a0 He writes and requests, \u201cI hope that your determination will happily convince me that the Lord\u2019s answer is favorable.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, after the knot is tied, everybody who is married, knows that there can be conflict in a marriage relationship. You tell one story of John Broadus.\u00a0 Is that his name?\u00a0 Is that correct?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>John Broadus was one of the founding four men of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where I teach\u2014a name that is renowned, in Southern Baptist circles, for his homiletics.\u00a0\u00a0 He had a textbook on homiletics that is well-known.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, he may have been known for his theology; but he had a letter that had a disclaimer on it that said, \u201cRead with care\u201d? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Because why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, once you get into the letter, you suddenly find that he is away.\u00a0 I think he is in Virginia; and his wife is, back, in Kentucky.\u00a0 There has obviously been a quarrel between them before he left.\u00a0 He is, basically, asking for forgiveness.\u00a0 It is not just, \u201cPlease forgive me,\u201d it is, \u201cPlease, please!\u201d\u00a0 It goes on for a number of lines where he is repeating the same thing, \u201cI do love you.\u00a0 I dearly love you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can obviously see why a Victorian\u2014who are very prudish in some of these matters were\u2014this is not the sort of thing you want for PR going out about a very well-known public figure\u2014thus, the \u201cRead with care.\u201d\u00a0 Again, it shows you that, in even the best of marriages, there will be times of conflict and tension.\u00a0 The critical question is dealing with those things, biblically.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, how are you going to handle it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let me read just a portion of one of John Broadus\u2019 letters to his wife\u2014this written in the middle of the Civil War\u2014Wednesday, September 2, 1863.\u00a0 He writes to her and says:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOh, my Darling! The love of my life is bound up in your love. Tell me\u2014tell me that, without reserve, from a full, overflowing heart\u2014you love me and that you will always love me with your whole heart!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I am happy; and there is nothing Earth can give or take away that shall render me really unhappy.\u00a0 For are we not both trying, amid all our weaknesses, to trust in the yet loftier and richer love of God our Savior? Then love me, Lottie, love me! See how much more you can love me! I claim to deserve it only on one ground\u2014that I love you.\u00a0 Love me, dearest.\u00a0 Love me! Love me! Love me!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This written by a theologian.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Then he goes on to say: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am unwilling to cease writing.\u00a0 I want to keep begging for you to love me.\u00a0 Not that I doubt you, dearest.\u00a0 Oh, no\u2014fond, faithful, true, self-sacrificing, devoted wife, gentle, tender, sweetheart wife.\u00a0 I know that you love me dearly; and for that very reason, I want you to love me more, dearest, more.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhile I write, I feel not so far distant; and when I stop, the wires seem to be cut and the blank impassable space stretches out between us.\u00a0 Lottie, won\u2019t you love me? Ever tenderly yours, John Broadus\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let me ask you a question about that, Michael.\u00a0 You listen to a letter where he is saying \u201cLove me.\u00a0 Love me.\u00a0 Love me.\u201d\u00a0 Does that concern you that maybe he was a little pre-occupied with her loving him, instead of him expressing his love for her? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It could be taken that way, if it is read out of context, but I think I have read enough of the letters of Broadus.\u00a0 I read about 25 or 30 of them\u2014maybe, even more to his first wife, Lottie.\u00a0 There is more going on in their marriage than simply that.\u00a0 I take it there has been a conflict.\u00a0\u00a0 He has come away, and he is trying to resolve that.\u00a0 The difficulty of resolving that\u2014when there is no other means of communication, beyond a pen and paper\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How long would it have taken that letter to have gotten back to her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Probably the best part of a week, I would think, depending on where he was.\u00a0 It is in the middle of the Civil War. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You also reflect some more contemporary letters.\u00a0 In fact, you go to the great British doctor\u2014the prince of preachers\u2014Martyn Lloyd-Jones\u2014and found some of his love letters to his wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There is one.\u00a0 Well, there are a few that are being reprinted.\u00a0 One of the <em>Banner of Truth<\/em> books, of the letters of Lloyd-Jones, came out.\u00a0 I found this letter in there, in which he talks about how he is crazy about his wife.\u00a0 He is away on a trip, across the Atlantic, and she is back in Wales.\u00a0 What we know about their marriage is\u2014 that after that trip, he vowed he would never take another trip of such length, without taking her along with him.\u00a0 He was away for about six weeks to two months, I think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We can get this picture because I have read Lloyd-Jones\u2019 sermons. I have listened to some of his preaching. You would not think of him as a romantic, as you listen to him; would you? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 This was a surprise when I read through that volume of letters. Lloyd- Jones, probably in terms of his understanding of ministry in certain areas of life and theology, has been an enormous influence on me, personally.\u00a0 What a surprise to find that letter.\u00a0 So, when I was drawing this volume up, with my daughter, I thought: \u201cMan!\u00a0 We have got to include that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am just going to read a portion of it, as well. This was written on the 25<sup>th <\/sup>of September, 1939\u2014Martyn to Bethan Lloyd-Jones: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dear Bethan, Thank you for your letter of this morning, though I am very angry that you should have been up until 11:30 p.m.writing it! I see that you are quite incorrigible. The idea that I shall become used to being without you is really funny.\u00a0 I could speak for a long time on this subject as I have told you many, many times.\u00a0 The passing of years does nothing but deepen and intensify my love for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I think of those days in London, in 1925 and 1926, when I thought that no greater love was possible, I could laugh!\u00a0 But honestly, during the last year, I have come to believe that it was not possible for a man to love his wife more than I loved you.\u00a0 Yet, I see that there is no end to love and that it is still true that absence makes the heart grow fonder.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am quite certain that there is no lover, anywhere, writing to a girl, who is quite as mad about her as I am.\u00a0 Indeed, I pity those lovers who are not married. Well, I\u2019d better put a curb to things or I shall spend the night writing to you, without a word of news.\u00a0 Ever yours, Martyn\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, what I get out of that letter is the maturity of love.\u00a0 What he basically said was\u2014when he started, it was puppy love.\u00a0 Now, he compares what he has for his wife and there is no comparison. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you\u2019re really sharing in your book here, Michael, is example after example of letters that come from the heart\u2014that are expressed\u2014not just a fond affection, but there is also great theology.\u00a0 These letters point people to God and remind their spouses of the truth of God\u2019s Word. I am thinking of the illustration of 1,600 letters by this guy.\u00a0 For some of our listeners, you just need to write one.\u00a0 You need to write one love letter to your wife, or to your husband, and then, may I challenge you to read it to them, face to face.\u00a0 If you go to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am going to be at the conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
