I like something a little\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It's not your musical love language?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here is the reason, though\u2014we need to focus on romance in our marriages because we get into ruts and routines in our marriage.\u00a0 I just kind of wrote down what that routine has looked like for us.\u00a0 You know, we get up before sunup.\u00a0 We get on the treadmill.\u00a0 We have a few words with one another\u2014maybe have a little breakfast together\u2014a cup of coffee.\u00a0 We have a kiss on the cheek or the lips; and we say, \u201cGoodbye,\u201d for the day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI leave to go to work.\u00a0 Barbara stays home to go to work.\u00a0 We both begin to tackle a number of problems that we'll face throughout the day.\u00a0 She may have to deal with endless issues\u2014doctors, laundry, chores, errands.\u00a0 I have endless issues at work.\u00a0 I'm dealing with budgets, finances, human resource issues.\u00a0 And then, our paths cross again, after this laborious day, at about 6:00\/6:30 in the evening\u2014when both of us have spent 90 percent of our emotional bank account.\u00a0 I mean, it is banging, \u201cEmpty\u201d, at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, not just emotionally\u2014physically, you're tired.\u00a0 You've had a day behind you.\u00a0 You've tapped into your emotional reserves and so, now, here you are together, as man and wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; and you watch the news together, eat some dinner, read some mail, maybe pay some bills.\u00a0 You clean up from dinner, and then maybe go online\u2014do a little email\u2014watch some sporting event.\u00a0 She may go to bed early because she's had a tough day, and I come in later.\u00a0 You get in this routine; and it is day, after day, after day, of the same routine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0And romance was not a part of the routine\u2014I noticed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn't see it anywhere in here.\u00a0 You know\u2014and our weekends are no better.\u00a0 They're spent catching up on sleep, and family, and household duties.\u00a0 It's no wonder why we have a television program called <em>Desperate Housewives<\/em> and why <em>Newsweek<\/em> had, as their cover story, a new generation of married women, who are cheating on their husbands.\u00a0 They're looking for intimacy.\u00a0 They're looking for some excitement.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, one of the quotes in the <em>Newsweek<\/em> article was one woman, lamenting, saying, \"Don't you remember the time when he kissed you with a kiss that launched 1,000 kisses?\"\u00a0 Well, you know, you can think back to the times when you dated\u2014when you kissed with a kiss that launched 1,000 kisses\u2014but the nature of this routine, I just read right here\u2014there's not anything there that wants to launch 1,000 kisses.\u00a0 It wants to pour water all over them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We've talked, this week, about the makeover and going back to make sure the foundation is solid before we do anything to the rooms, or the walls, or the decoration.\u00a0 For a woman, that means making sure there is security and acceptance.\u00a0 For a man, it means making sure there is fundamental respect for his manhood and his masculinity.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith those in place, though, there are still some things we can do to cause the romantic house to sparkle a little bit rather than be drab or dreary; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 If you want to have a romantic makeover, I think there's about a half-a-dozen things you need to focus on.\u00a0 One of them is imagination and creativity.\u00a0 Now, if you don't believe this is in the Scripture\u2014take a look at the book of Song of Solomon.\u00a0 Both Solomon and his bride took the time to be able to focus on the romance in their relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRemember her invitation to him?\u00a0 \"Come!\u00a0 Let's go to the countryside...\"\u00a0 She didn't go on to say, \"...so we can do a little antiquing.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \"No, let's go visit the vineyard, and there I will give you my love.\"\u00a0 It's not mentioned in Song of Solomon, Chapter 7, how much, in advance, she invited him to go on this horticultural experience into the vineyard; but you have to kind of pick up on the fact that she invited him, early, to go to the vineyard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You're saying she allowed for a little anticipation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She did.\u00a0 She allowed for that anticipation to build a little imagination and to be thinking about, \"Wow!\u00a0 There's going to be some things that may take place here.\"\u00a0 What you're really seeing there, Bob, is a picture of what it used to be like when we dated.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRemember how you used to date?\u00a0 You would plan the date.\u00a0 You'd think through where you're going to go, and what you do next, and what you'd wear, and how you'd get all set for one another, and how you'd try to show her a good night.\u00a0 Well, that's all the stuff of imagination and creativity that adds some spark to the relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0And I'm thinking back to the days when Mary Ann and I were dating.\u00a0 I'm thinking of all the creative things I did as a way to express affection to her.\u00a0 For example, one year, there was a pizza place in town that made heart-shaped pizzas on Valentine's Day.\u00a0 Without telling Mary Ann\u2014she was working at the hospital\u2014she was a nurse\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew when her dinner break was going to be.\u00a0 I ordered the heart-shaped pizza so that it would be hot and fresh, right about the time she'd be starting her dinner break.\u00a0 Went by, and picked it up, and surprised her\u2014showed up with a heart-shaped pizza on Valentine's Day, while she was working at the hospital.\u00a0 We fed each other pizza.\u00a0 We talked about how cute she was in her uniform\u2014all of that kind of thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose little things\u2014the heart-shaped pizzas, or the Valentine's Day cards, or the flowers\u2014Barbara, that creativity and use of imagination\u2014it's really saying to your spouse, \"I was thinking about you.\"<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It communicates that, \u201cYou are important enough to me that I've taken the time to plan something\u2014to think about you ahead of time\u2014to use some of my energy and my thinking on you.\u201d\u00a0 It's a way to value your spouse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I'll never forget leaving on a trip\u2014I don't recall how long the trip was\u2014all I remember was coming back on a Friday night and being excited about seeing Barbara because she had invited me to get away\u2014a lot like the bride of Solomon did.\u00a0 It was a real treat.\u00a0 I mean, I'm not at liberty\u2014at this point, with or without her here in the studio, I might add\u2014to talk about what took place\u2014but what happened was\u2014she used her imagination, she used her creativity.\u00a0 She encouraged me and she blessed me, as a man, with that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think we underestimate what those things can mean in a marriage relationship, along the way.\u00a0 I think there needs to be those kinds of moments, with some degree of regularity, throughout the year, in a marriage relationship.\u00a0 I know you can\u2019t go to extreme imagination and creativity ideas four or five times a month, but you can do something each month that speaks your spouse\u2019s romantic love language.\u00a0 In the process, what you do is you actually give your marriage a romantic makeover.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Barbara, can you think of one or two ways that Dennis has connected\u2014using creativity and imagination\u2014to express his love and his affection for you\u2014to be romantic with you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the things that he likes to do, as he has mentioned before, is he likes to have a special meal or a romantic quiet meal.\u00a0 One of the ways that he does that is\u2014he knows that with our schedule, that\u2019s difficult for me to pull off.\u00a0 So, he will be the one to go to the store, and buy the ingredients, and do all of the work to create that atmosphere, and that mood, and that time because he knows that\u2014especially, in the years that all of our kids were at home\u2014he knew that that was really difficult for me to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe would go and do that, and help me by participating in creating an evening that we could have time together\u2014just the two of us.\u00a0 A lot of times, we would do it after the kids were in bed.\u00a0 When our kids were really young, they would all go to bed at eight o\u2019clock; and then, we would have dinner and time for the two of us, late at night.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Again, the point is he was lightening your load and saying, \u201cI value this time with you, and I want to make it special.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and I think what happens is marriages become stale.\u00a0 We become stale-mates, at that point.\u00a0 Our God, though, is not a boring God.\u00a0 He is a God who has a tremendous imagination and is creative.\u00a0 He created the earth.\u00a0 John Piper wrote an article called \u201cGod is Not Boring\u201d.\u00a0 In that, he said that using our God-given imagination is a Christian duty.\u00a0 He went on to say: \u201cJesus said, \u2018Whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them.\u2019\u00a0 We must imagine ourselves in their place and imagine what we would like done to us.\u00a0 Compassionate, sympathetic, helpful love hangs much on the imagination of the lover.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe point is, as lovers of our spouses, we need to be thinking and imagining, \u201cWhat would speak volumes to our spouse?\u201d\u00a0 Would it be turning off the TV?\u00a0 Would it be helping her do the dishes?\u00a0 Would it be sending him an email, in the middle of the day, that invites him home to a little more than just a regular meal?\u00a0 But it\u2019s something that speaks of the heart that has imagined something of a gift for the other person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it's important for us, here, to know what our wife does like and doesn't like because it may be that we're trying to express our love over and over again\u2014and all we're doing is annoying the other person.\u00a0 You've talked about this.\u00a0 Which one of you likes to have your hair played with or your neck rubbed?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Neck rubbed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it is Dennis that likes that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, he likes it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You don't like it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Not particularly; but he would always does it to me, though.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it would really kind of annoy you.\u00a0 He's trying to say, \"I love you.\u00a0 I love you;\" and you're going, \"Get your hands off me!\u00a0 That really bugs me.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that really points out the need to do an inventory on your spouse.\u00a0 If you're going to refurbish, remodel, and you're going to rekindle the romance in your marriage, then that means you need to know what would create romance with your spouse.\u00a0 And so, in Simply Romantic<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Nights\u2014which is a kit of romantic ideas for husbands and wives\u2014we have a romantic inventory.\u00a0 One of the questions asks you to go through a long list of things that fan the flames of romance in your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Like neck rub and back rub?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, let me give you an illustration\u2014candy, flowers, neck rub, back rub.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I told you they were in there.\u00a0 You know Barbara doesn't like those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That's right, and she would not have checked those off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just making sure you know that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And in this inventory, you're actually asked to only check off five.\u00a0 Bubble bath, lingerie, love notes, praise in front of others, praise in private, sharing recreational activities, gifts, dancing, eating out, movies, picnics, talking by firelight, a honey-do list that's done, holding my hand, flirting, walking together, spending time with no agenda, public displays of affection, watching you play with the kids, all the bills paid on time\u2014well, you get the point.\u00a0 You do an inventory so that you can truly have a romantic makeover in your marriage because you know what would communicate romance to your spouse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, if you don't want back rubs and neck rubs, is there one of those that you would check off and say, \"Yes, this is romantic for me.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, the \u201cOther.\u201d\u00a0 Barbara would write \u201cOther.\u201d\u00a0 It would be she wants to know she\u2019s appreciated for what she\u2019s done on behalf of the family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t asking you.\u00a0 I\u2019m asking her.\u00a0 So what\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was answering for her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 You think you\u2019ve got me nailed, huh?\u00a0 Is that it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve got you nailed\u2014never!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you hear her come back with that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It sounded like you did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 For a second, she thought, \u201cOh, he thinks he\u2019s got me figured out.\u00a0 We\u2019re about to change the equation.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cChange the formula, here!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 Answer the question, Sweetheart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, one of the ones on this list that I would check is \"Spending time together, with no agenda.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Doing what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, because then, if you've got time, then you can talk about whatever you want to talk about.\u00a0 I mean, that's the good thing about going for walks.\u00a0 It gives you time that's not interrupted by kids; and it's not predetermined\u2014you've got this list of things.\u00a0 So often, we communicate about things that we have to communicate about\u2014we have to communicate about the kids, we have to talk about the schedule, we have to make decisions about things.\u00a0 I really enjoy time with him when it's not driven-time\u2014when it\u2019s not governed by objectives and things that have to be done\u2014when we just have time when we can talk about whatever we feel like talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Long drives.\u00a0 You've done that before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Long drives.\u00a0 I like those, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 With the radio off\u2014just the two of you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the cell phone off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 And silence is fine for a while, too.\u00a0 That doesn't bother either one of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You've got one of those on the list that would be\u2014we know neck rubs would be on your list\u2014what else\u2014one other?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All the bills being paid on time.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And make it snappy; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; but it's more of a flirting of\u2014you know\u2014more of a flirting like, \"I like you.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, creativity and imagination are important ingredients for a healthy, romantic makeover; and we can execute over the weekend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What's yours called?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mine is called \"Play it Again\" for Simply Romantic husbands.\u00a0 Here is the built anticipation:\u00a0 \u201cA few days before your Simply Romantic adventure, put a custom CD or cassette in your wife's car stereo.\u00a0 Make sure it's not jazz, but it's piano.\u00a0 Make sure\"\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That's not on the list at all!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cMake sure the music will begin when she starts the car.\u00a0 If you narrate the recording, use some of your time to invite her out for a musical date.\u00a0 If you don't narrate, write a note and tape it to the CD or the cassette tape.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, it talks about the main event:\u00a0 \u201cOver dinner talk, about two things.\u00a0 First, discuss your favorite memories from your dating days;
