from throwing a touchdown pass.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeff:<\/strong>\u00a0 Think about your life and the times when you learn great lessons.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t when you had a Super Bowl ring put on your finger, or someone gave you a great trophy, or you got a financial windfall, or they wrote you up in the newspaper\u2014and you said, \u201cOh, my, this makes me humble.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to surrender more to Jesus for this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo, those things are not as constructive because we are too fallen.\u00a0 It\u2019s the toughest blitzes in life\u2014the biggest trials, the weaknesses of our temptation that each of us our vulnerable to\u2014that says:\u00a0 \u201cGod, I can\u2019t make it on my own.\u00a0 Change me.\u00a0 Help me.\u201d\u00a0 The blitzes are really the sweet opportunities for God to do great work in our lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is from a former NFL quarterback, who, on more than one occasion, has faced blitzing linebackers\u2014who\u2019s been knocked down, and who\u2019s gotten back up again.\u00a0 Stay with us.\u00a0 Do you have your wings for the game day on Saturday?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Notice I said Saturday.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, because before we ever get to the Super Bowl on Sunday, we\u2019ve got something bigger happening\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A game\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and yes, I do have my wing order ready to go.\u00a0 Thank you very much.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, what kind are you going to get?\u00a0 Are you going to get spicy wings or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I always go half and half.\u00a0 I go with the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Some frou-frou wings\u2014what are you going to do?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Go with the garlic parmesan, which are pretty good wings.\u00a0 Yes, they are.\u00a0 And now, I\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You don\u2019t dare kiss Mary Ann after the garlic parmesan?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 It\u2019s worse if you try to kiss her after the mango habanero because that just burns her lips right up.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you\u2014but you mix the two together you\u2019ve got a pretty good meal right there!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What we\u2019re talking about here is not food.\u00a0 We\u2019re talking about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we\u2019re talking about food!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014Super Saturday.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re talking about food in the middle of Super Saturday because tomorrow is the day when, all around the country, in hundreds of locations, guys are going to be huddling up for training camp with\u2014not the Super Bowl training camp, but the Super Saturday training camp\u2014where guys are getting together to really understand the game plan for manhood\u2014to understand God\u2019s design for masculinity\u2014how you live that out, how you work together with other guys and build into each other\u2019s lives in the midst of this.\u00a0 This is going to be a great day\u2014tens of thousands of guys, rallying tomorrow for the Stepping Up<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Super Saturday.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Every guy who attends is going to get a workbook that he\u2019s going to leave the event with.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to have some of the adjustments he\u2019s going to make in his own game plan for his life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFrankly, Bob, it\u2019s going to be a life-changing weekend\u2014very practical, face life as a man\u2014to face the kind of blitzes that we experience, as men, in life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, that\u2019s the message that we\u2019re hearing this week as Jeff Kemp, former NFL quarterback, talks about some of the off-field blitzes he faced as an NFL player, and in his life after the NFL, and how he learned a little bit about how to manage life by learning how to manage the rushing linebackers during his time as an NFL quarterback.\u00a0 Here\u2019s Jeff Kemp with Part Two of his message on facing the blitz.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeff:<\/strong>\u00a0 The biggest blitz that I faced\u2014and this is prior to my dad getting cancer and dying.\u00a0 That was a pretty tough blitz.\u00a0 Prior to that, it was 1991.\u00a0 I was a Christian athlete that gave testimony all over the country.\u00a0 We had prayer groups.\u00a0 I told people that I was more into my relationship with God for my security than I was the NFL and the coaches; but when it came time to leave the league, I found out I was a lot less of a mature Christian than I realized.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got cut in 1992 after I\u2019d had a really good season with the Eagles.\u00a0 I came home to Seattle.\u00a0 For four weeks, no team would pick me up.\u00a0 In the fourth week of the season, the Seahawks had a quarterback get hurt.\u00a0 We thought, \u201cThis is great.\u201d\u00a0 I called the coach of the Seahawks, Tom Flores.\u00a0 I said, \u201cCoach, I\u2019m in town.\u00a0 I\u2019m in shape.\u00a0 I\u2019m ready.\u00a0 Please sign me.\u201d\u00a0 It was a voicemail, and I hung up.\u00a0 Then, he called me back on my voicemail machine and said: \u201cHey, I heard you got cut.\u00a0 Sorry about that, but we\u2019re not going to sign you.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to sign someone else,\u201d that I\u2019d never heard of\u2014another blow to my ego, but this is God working.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I got that call and heard that message, I just didn\u2019t have any of my great Christian maturity or faith left.\u00a0 The bottom dropped out.\u00a0 I went out to the front porch of my house.\u00a0 I was so broken, and so mad, and so frustrated that I wasn\u2019t going to get to play football that season; and my career was ending.\u00a0 \u201cI can\u2019t believe it\u2019s this bad!\u201d\u00a0 I was feeling yucky and rotten.\u00a0 I was mad at God.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t going to pray, and I told Him.\u00a0\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I\u2019m married.\u00a0 So, I\u2019m not just myself.\u00a0 I\u2019m a team.\u00a0 This is a good message to us\u2014that fits in line about the larger purpose of marriage\u2014where we shape one another to be more like Jesus Christ.\u00a0 I\u2019m sitting there, in my pity party.\u00a0 Stacy comes out.\u00a0 She is compassionate toward me.\u00a0 She goes, \u201cOh, Jeff, I can\u2019t imagine how much this hurts; but I\u2019ve just got to remind you.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been through some tough things, and God has always had a good purpose.\u00a0 He\u2019s always opening another door.\u00a0 He\u2019s always taught us something and had something good ahead of us.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>I looked at her, and I said: \u201cI know that!\u00a0 I just can\u2019t believe that it\u2019s finishing like this.\u00a0 I just want to finish football with some dignity!\u201d\u00a0 Well, there are two sides to love, and Stacy\u2019s good at both sides.\u00a0 She started kicking in the tougher side of love, and she did it so delicately that it impacted me like a sledge hammer.\u00a0 She said, \u201cYou know, as I recall, Jesus led a perfect life.\u00a0 Then, when He left this world, He didn\u2019t receive any dignity.\u00a0 Maybe you need to let go of that desire.\u201d\u00a0 Here\u2019s what happened in that moment.\u00a0 My very worst moment of my life\u2014granted, no one had died of cancer, I hadn\u2019t lost my wife, or a child, or something more precious to me\u2014but losing my career hurt.\u00a0 I had the worst moment of my life converted to the greatest moment of my life in a matter of seconds.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Here\u2019s what happened.\u00a0 I started thinking about Jesus and the life He lived\u2014sweating drops of blood in the Garden of Gethsemane\u2014\u201cI really don\u2019t want to do this, Father, to be separated from You, to take upon the sin of the world, to be completely in anguish of bearing the world\u2019s rebellion against You, to die the most brutal death possible; and yet, if this is the only way, I will do this because I love You, I\u2019m obedient to You, and We are one.\u00a0\u00a0 Not my will but Thy will be done.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what Jesus says.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, soon, He\u2019s beaten\u2014can\u2019t recognize His face.\u00a0 His back is ripped off through the scourging.\u00a0 He\u2019s dragging a cross up the hill, and He can\u2019t even make it all the way because He\u2019s so worn down and beaten already.\u00a0 Then, He is crucified, and He did that for me.\u00a0 I have eternal life, and I have all my sins forgiven, and this is the meaning of my life\u2014this is my treasure\u2014and I want more pro football?\u00a0 What an ungrateful idiot I am!\u00a0 How short-sighted of me.\u00a0 What a lack of vision!\u00a0 \u201cGod, I\u2019m sorry!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, sometimes\u2014I had grown up in a Christian family.\u00a0 For an emotional guy\u2014 I think there was enough competition- and performance-orientation and insecurity that \u201cI\u2019ve got to be better\u201d and kind of please God so I can get a benefit from Him\u2014kind of a conditional theology that I had in my life.\u00a0 There was enough of that mixed in me that I kind of viewed God as a formula thing\u2014\u201cI please Him, He helps me.\u00a0 We work together,\u201d etc., etc.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have a passionate love affair with Jesus.\u00a0 All of a sudden, I started to cry.\u00a0 I felt a love with Jesus\u2014a love from Jesus, a love for Him.\u00a0 That was because I was in such a blitz\u2014losing my security of my career\u2014that which I had been treasuring.\u00a0 All of a sudden, it put my true treasure on Jesus.\u00a0 It was a blitz that opened my eyes to that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Think about your life and the times when you learned great lessons.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t when you had a Super Bowl ring put on your finger, or someone gave you a great trophy, or you got a financial windfall, or they wrote you up in the newspaper\u2014and you said, \u201cOh, my, this makes me humble.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to surrender more to Jesus through this.\u201d\u00a0 No, those things are not as constructive because we are too fallen.\u00a0 It\u2019s the toughest blitzes in life\u2014the biggest trials, the weaknesses of our temptations that each work in our lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI speak about that story because of the analogy to our spiritual lives; and secondly, because it is such a great picture of marriage.\u00a0 If I was Jeff by myself\u2014or Stacy didn\u2019t have the courage, and our marriage was too asymptotic\u2014two people going on parallel paths, rather than connected\u2014I don\u2019t think she would have been in tune with my spirit enough or had the courage to come out and both\u2014\u201cA\u201d, encourage me; and, \u201cB\u201d, challenge me, as she did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod used her in me because we\u2019re one, and it helped change my life.\u00a0 Then, it made me a better person.\u00a0 I was ready to accept\u2014in fact, that was fascinating.\u00a0 Right after I started kind of praying to God\u2014after saying, \u201cNo,\u201d and enjoying Him, and loving Him, and appreciating Him, finally\u2014these words came into my head\u2014and Paul had written them\u2014he said, \u201cForgetting what lies behind, I press on to what lies ahead.\u201d\u00a0 I needed that freedom.\u00a0 All of a sudden, football was gone.\u00a0 I was ready to retire, and that was really sweet the way God did that through a blitz.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarriage blitzes us because we\u2019re designed to be different, and those differences will come at us, frequently.\u00a0 First of all, from our person standpoint, Stacy and I got a high degree of difference, given to us by God.\u00a0 We\u2014our styles are so different.\u00a0 Our kids can hear it in the house every day.\u00a0 We have a great marriage; but we\u2019re learning more, and more, and more.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 These great strengths make for a fabulous team in crisis\u2014like that year we went through in \u201991\u2014awesome team because of those differences.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, Keegan\u2014one day, our five-year-old\u2014is walking through the hallway.\u00a0 He sees Mommy and Daddy having a conversation.\u00a0 We\u2019re disagreeing because we see things differently.\u00a0 He says, \u201cDaddy, you guys are too different to be married,\u201d [Laughter] \u2014pretty insightful five-year-old.\u00a0 I think, \u201cOh, my gosh!\u00a0 This is a teachable moment.\u00a0 I better say something good!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I get down on my knee, while I\u2019m thinking.\u00a0 \u201cOkay.\u00a0 No, Keegan.\u00a0 Keegan, the reason Mommy and Daddy are married is because we\u2019re different.\u00a0 You know, how on a football team there are big linemen, and little quarterbacks, and there are fast receivers?\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s because their differences make them a better team.\u00a0 In marriage, God made men and women very different so they can become a really good team to be a good mommy and daddy.\u00a0 The good thing for you is we have God to glue us together.\u201d\u00a0 Then, I sat there a minute and thought, \u201cThat was a really good talk.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \u201cWell, done, Jeff!\u201d\u00a0 But Keegan trumped me because his little five-year-old brain went to work quickly.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou know what, though, Dad?\u00a0 I think with you guys it\u2019s going to take Crazy Glue!\u201d [Laughter] \u2014from a five-year-old!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s what I want to touch on.\u00a0 There is a huge, and disguised, and unnoticed blitz that is impacting marriage, and family, and relationships in America\u2014and around the world.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to give you kind of a really simple paradigm, through which to see this blitz\u2014that will help us overcome it.\u00a0 This paradigm is, I think, something crucial to pass onto the next generation because this generation, that is being raised right now, is being raised in the most consumeristic, individualistic, selfish culture in the history of mankind.\u00a0 This consumer culture is the blitz that we\u2019re facing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTwenty to thirty minutes of talk, from a dad, in a week, is what a child gets.\u00a0 They get forty hours of media, including the TV, and the web, and everything else.\u00a0 They see 500 advertisements a day\u2014150,000 in a year.\u00a0 Close to 3 million advertisements by the time they are 20 or 25 years old.\u00a0 I mean, we are just inundated with messages that say: \u201cYou\u2019re the consumer.\u00a0 Go for the gusto.\u00a0 Make it work for you.\u00a0 Trade it in.\u00a0 Get a new one.\u00a0 Be happy.\u00a0 It\u2019s about you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me read a letter that a 29-year-old guy, named Jeremy, wrote me when I said, \u201cHey, give me some insight into what Gen-Y thinks about marriage and relationships.\u201d\u00a0 He said: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn my experience, the fear of divorce is very real in Gen-Y.\u00a0 Many of us saw our parents, friends\u2019 parents, or close family members go through divorce.\u00a0 The inevitable question is, \u201cIf they can\u2019t do it, what makes me think I can?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think a major challenge for my generation is consumerism.\u00a0 We\u2019ve grown up in a country that\u2019s known incredible prosperity and freedom.\u00a0 We have been inundated with advertisements since we were born.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been taught, by society, not to be satisfied with what we have.\u00a0 We need to update and upgrade constantly, or we become outdated and irrelevant.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost of us have never had to learn how to be content.\u00a0 Remember in Philippians how Paul talked about the secret of contentment\u2014completely the opposite of consumption, ownership, and stuff\u2014totally based in a relationship with Christ.\u00a0 \u201cI can handle all things through Him who gives me strength.\u201d\u00a0 We never had to learn how to be content.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou move into\u2014excuse me\u2014our society changes so fast we don\u2019t have to worry about being content.\u00a0 In fact, if you get content with what you have and you get too comfortable, you risk missing the next big thing and marginalizing yourself from your peers.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is what 22-year-olds are thinking about\u2014the pressure to keep up and stay relevant is overwhelming.\u00a0 But then, you move into marriage\u2014a world where there are no easy upgrades, no quick fixes.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve never learned how to be content\u2014how to stay committed to something, despite how it feels\u2014it\u2019ll be that much harder to succeed in marriage.\u00a0 Unless we make a blatant effort to view our spouse differently than we\u2019ve been taught to view everything else in society, we\u2019re going to slip into the consumeristic, hypnotic trance without even knowing it.\u00a0 That\u2019s the blitz I\u2019m talking about\u2014a consumeristic trance that we\u2019ve almost been hypnotized into\u2014that we end up putting into our relationships.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe mindset of marriage is at odds with the mindset of consumerism.\u00a0 It\u2019s not about getting and taking.\u00a0 It\u2019s about giving and exchanging.\u00a0 It\u2019s not anchored in what you feel.\u00a0 It\u2019s anchored in what you believe and what you are committed to.\u00a0 It\u2019s not self-focused; it\u2019s self-sacrificing.\u00a0 Most of us would never like to admit that we think like consumers, but it remains at the core of our culture and the foundation of society.\u00a0 It\u2019s almost impossible not to be affected by it and let it spill over into our marriages.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Philippians, Chapter 2, it tells us that with anything in life we should have the same attitude as Jesus Christ\u2014just before that, it explained His attitude, in a coaching point\u2014on how we should behave in relationships and, particularly in the most important relationship, marriage\u2014the one in which kids are stuck viewing through a consumeristic lens.\u00a0 Thus, its advertising isn\u2019t so good\u2014with a 50 percent divorce rate, and a bunch of old couples who seem like they never talk at the dinner table and restaurants, and supposedly don\u2019t have any sex.\u00a0 People have sex, and fun, and romance everywhere else.\u00a0 So, what kind of advertisement are we doing for God\u2019s institution?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, they\u2019re cohabiting instead and hooking up.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the results of that are totally destroying their self-esteem and their confidence in who God made them.\u00a0 They are stuck, floating on a sea of sin, and separation from God, and insecurity that makes relationships even less stable.\u00a0 But God says in verse 3 of Chapter 2: \u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit; but with humility of mind, let each of you regard one another as more important than himself.\u00a0 Don\u2019t merely look out for your own personal interests but also for the interests of others.\u201d\u00a0 What blueprints for marriage\u2014this is the most self-effacing\u2014other-serving relationship on earth.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYet, we have let consumerism slip into the Christian mentality of marriage.\u00a0 If Christians find themselves, four years into marriage, saying, \u201cBut I\u2019m not happy,\u201d that\u2019s because they made the center of their marriage their happiness\u2014which turned them into a consumer\u2014which meant they took more out of it than they were putting into it.\u00a0 The contrast of the world\u2019s consumer-approach to relationship to God\u2019s approach of being a sacrificial investor is the way that can get us out of this blitz.\u00a0 We could, then, show the world that marriage is beautiful.\u00a0 It\u2019s an awesome advertisement for the Gospel.\u00a0 It\u2019s a picture of covenant love.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the simple paradigm I\u2019m going to leave us with.\u00a0 Today, am I an investor or a consumer?\u00a0 The paradigm for us\u2014to crush in our life\u2014is the consumer paradigm.\u00a0 One of the great things we can give to the next generation is the question,\u00a0 \u201cHey, have you ever thought about how much consumerism shapes relationships; and how we tend to go into it with a selfish formula of, \u2018How much can I get from that person?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the complete opposite of what God intended for marriage.\u00a0 It\u2019s meant to be the place of selflessness and investment in another.\u00a0 Paradoxically, by laying down your life and giving yourself to someone else\u2014not waiting for a return or doing a transaction\u2014you get a bond that is so strong that God\u2019s love comes in and gives you both a greater return in the long-term.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a young husband who came into his home and found his wife in bed\u2014in an affair.\u00a0 Shock on all parties\u2019 sake; but he did something that was an investor mentality rather than a consumer mentality.\u00a0 He went away from that moment.\u00a0 He asked himself the question, \u201cHow could I have ever let my wife get to the point where she would fall in love and get into a sexual affair with another person?\u201d\u00a0 He came to the conclusion that even though he was a leader of a church, and he was coaching little league, and he was a good dad, and a busy guy doing good things\u2014not messing around with pornography or other stuff\u2014he\u2019d stopped paying attention to his wife.\u00a0 He\u2019d stop choosing her and investing in her.\u00a0 He\u2019d stopped making her his priority.\u00a0 Basically, he had allowed her to fall out of love with him.\u00a0 He came to her, and he apologized.\u00a0 By his apology, she melted more than she ever would have before.\u00a0 She found the grace of God.\u00a0 She confessed her sin.\u00a0 They are now together, and their kids and their grandkids will have a legacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause he took the blitz, and he looked inside, and he didn\u2019t act like a consumer who\u2019d been ripped off by his wife\u2019s affair\u2014he acted like an investor who said: \u201cMaybe I\u2019ve done some things to cause this problem.\u00a0 I should look at myself.\u00a0 Change myself.\u00a0 Turn to God and invest in her by apologizing myself.\u201d\u00a0 Look what it did\u2014an amazing rebirth of life for that marriage.\u00a0 That\u2019s the investor mentality versus the consumer mentality.\u00a0 We need to bring it to our lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, again, today, we\u2019ve been listening to a message from Jeff Kemp, former NFL quarterback, talking about how you face the blitzes that life throws at you\u2014and how you stand firm, and stay in the pocket, and get the job done; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I\u2019m thinking of 1 Corinthians, Chapter 16, verses 13-14.\u00a0 It says, \u201cBe watchful.\u00a0 Stand firm in the faith.\u201d\u00a0 It goes on to talk about acting like men, being strong, and doing everything we do in love.\u00a0 It begins, though, with being watchful.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s really what Jeff is challenging guys to do here\u2014is be watchful about what\u2019s coming at you\u2014know when to get out of the pocket, and when to flee the danger, and also, know how to go on the offense.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we\u2019re challenging men to do, as a practical application of this message, is get involved in Super Saturday tomorrow in a church, near you, in your community.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are going to be tens of thousands of guys who are going to be involved in a Super Saturday event tomorrow in of the adjustments he\u2019s going to make in his own game plan for his life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFrankly, Bob, it\u2019s going to be a life-changing weekend\u2014very practical, anchored in the Scriptures\u2014but also very entertaining, and also an opportunity to connect with other guys.\u00a0 We\u2019re hoping that out of Super Saturday, that throughout the spring, there are going to be, literally, hundreds, if not thousands, of men\u2019s groups who are meeting together over a ten-week period to go deeper in a video series we\u2019ve created called Stepping Up: A face life as a man\u2014to face the kind of blitzes that we experience, as men, in life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, that\u2019s the message that we\u2019re hearing this week as Jeff Kemp, former NFL quarterback, talks about some of the off-field blitzes he faced as an NFL player, and in his life after the NFL, and how he learned a little bit about how to manage life by learning how to manage the rushing linebackers during his time as an NFL quarterback.\u00a0 Here\u2019s Jeff Kemp with Part Two of his message on facing the blitz.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jeff:<\/strong>\u00a0 The biggest blitz that I faced\u2014and this is prior to my dad getting cancer and dying.\u00a0 That was a pretty tough blitz.\u00a0 Prior to that, it was 1991.\u00a0 I was a Christian athlete that gave testimony all over the country.\u00a0 We had prayer groups.\u00a0 I told people that I was more into my relationship with God for my security than I was the NFL and the coaches; but when it came time to leave the league, I found out I was a lot less of a mature Christian than I realized.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got cut in 1992 after I\u2019d had a really good season with the Eagles.\u00a0 I came home to Seattle.\u00a0 For four weeks, no team would pick me up.\u00a0 In the fourth week of the season, the Seahawks had a quarterback get hurt.\u00a0 We thought, \u201cThis is great.\u201d\u00a0 I called the coach of the Seahawks, Tom Flores.\u00a0 I said, \u201cCoach, I\u2019m in town.\u00a0 I\u2019m in shape.\u00a0 I\u2019m ready.\u00a0 Please sign me.\u201d\u00a0 It was a voicemail, and I hung up.\u00a0 Then, he called me back on my voicemail machine and said: \u201cHey, I heard you got cut.\u00a0 Sorry about that, but we\u2019re not going to sign you.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to sign someone else,\u201d that I\u2019d never heard of\u2014another blow to my ego, but this is God working.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I got that call and heard that message, I just didn\u2019t have any of my great Christian maturity or faith left.\u00a0 The bottom dropped out.\u00a0 I went out to the front porch of my house.\u00a0 I was so broken, and so mad, and so frustrated that I wasn\u2019t going to get to play football that season; and my career was ending.\u00a0 \u201cI can\u2019t believe it\u2019s this bad!\u201d\u00a0 I was feeling yucky and rotten.\u00a0 I was mad at God.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t going to pray, and I told Him.\u00a0\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I\u2019m married.\u00a0 So, I\u2019m not just myself.\u00a0 I\u2019m a team.\u00a0 This is a good message to us\u2014that fits in line about the larger purpose of marriage\u2014where we shape one another to be more like Jesus Christ.\u00a0 I\u2019m sitting there, in my pity party.\u00a0 Stacy comes out.\u00a0 She is compassionate toward me.\u00a0 She goes, \u201cOh, Jeff, I can\u2019t imagine how much this hurts; but I\u2019ve just got to remind you.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been through some tough things, and God has always had a good purpose.\u00a0 He\u2019s always opening another door.\u00a0 He\u2019s always taught us something and had something good ahead of us.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>I looked at her, and I said: \u201cI know that!\u00a0 I just can\u2019t believe that it\u2019s finishing like this.\u00a0 I just want to finish football with some dignity!\u201d\u00a0 Well, there are two sides to love, and Stacy\u2019s good at both sides.\u00a0 She started kicking in the tougher side of love, and she did it so delicately that it impacted me like a sledge hammer.\u00a0 She said, \u201cYou know, as I recall, Jesus led a perfect life.\u00a0 Then, when He left this world, He didn\u2019t receive any dignity.\u00a0 Maybe you need to let go of that desire.\u201d\u00a0 Here\u2019s what happened in that moment.\u00a0 My very worst moment of my life\u2014granted, no one had died of cancer, I hadn\u2019t lost my wife, or a child, or something more precious to me\u2014but losing my career hurt.\u00a0 I had the worst moment of my life converted to the greatest moment of my life in a matter of seconds.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Here\u2019s what happened.\u00a0 I started thinking about Jesus and the life He lived\u2014sweating drops of blood in the Garden of Gethsemane\u2014\u201cI really don\u2019t want to do this, Father, to be separated from You, to take upon the sin of the world, to be completely in anguish of bearing the world\u2019s rebellion against You, to die the most brutal death possible; and yet, if this is the only way, I will do this because I love You, I\u2019m obedient to You, and We are one.\u00a0\u00a0 Not my will but Thy will be done.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what Jesus says.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, soon, He\u2019s beaten\u2014can\u2019t recognize His face.\u00a0 His back is ripped off through the scourging.\u00a0 He\u2019s dragging a cross up the hill, and He can\u2019t even make it all the way because He\u2019s so worn down and beaten already.\u00a0 Then, He is crucified, and He did that for me.\u00a0 I have eternal life, and I have all my sins forgiven, and this is the meaning of my life\u2014this is my treasure\u2014and I want more pro football?\u00a0 What an ungrateful idiot I am!\u00a0 How short-sighted of me.\u00a0 What a lack of vision!\u00a0 \u201cGod, I\u2019m sorry!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, sometimes\u2014I had grown up in a Christian family.\u00a0 For an emotional guy\u2014 I think there was enough competition- and performance-orientation and insecurity that \u201cI\u2019ve got to be better\u201d and kind of please God so I can get a benefit from Him\u2014kind of a conditional theology that I had in my life.\u00a0 There was enough of that mixed in me that I kind of viewed God as a formula thing\u2014\u201cI please Him, He helps me.\u00a0 We work together,\u201d etc., etc.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have a passionate love affair with Jesus.\u00a0 All of a sudden, I started to cry.\u00a0 I felt a love with Jesus\u2014a love from Jesus, a love for Him.\u00a0 That was because I was in such a blitz\u2014losing my security of my career\u2014that which I had been treasuring.\u00a0 All of a sudden, it put my true treasure on Jesus.\u00a0 It was a blitz that opened my eyes to that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Think about your life and the times when you learned great lessons.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t when you had a Super Bowl ring put on your finger, or someone gave you a great trophy, or you got a financial windfall, or they wrote you up in the newspaper\u2014and you said, \u201cOh, my, this makes me humble.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to surrender more to Jesus through this.\u201d\u00a0 No, those things are not as constructive because we are too fallen.\u00a0 It\u2019s the toughest blitzes in life\u2014the biggest trials, the weaknesses of our temptations that each of us is vulnerable to\u2014that says: \u201cGod, I can\u2019t make it on my own.\u00a0 Change me.\u00a0 Help me.\u201d\u00a0 The blitzes are really the sweet opportunities for God to do the great work in our lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI speak about that story because of the analogy to our spiritual lives; and secondly, because it is such a great picture of marriage.\u00a0 If I was Jeff by myself\u2014or Stacy didn\u2019t have the courage, and our marriage was too asymptotic\u2014two people going on parallel paths, rather than connected\u2014I don\u2019t think she would have been in tune with my spirit enough or had the courage to come out and both\u2014\u201cA\u201d, encourage me; and, \u201cB\u201d, challenge me, as she did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod used her in me because we\u2019re one, and it helped change my life.\u00a0 Then, it made me a better person.\u00a0 I was ready to accept\u2014in fact, that was fascinating.\u00a0 Right after I started kind of praying to God\u2014after saying, \u201cNo,\u201d and enjoying Him, and loving Him, and appreciating Him, finally\u2014these words came into my head\u2014and Paul had written them\u2014he said, \u201cForgetting what lies behind, I press on to what lies ahead.\u201d\u00a0 I needed that freedom.\u00a0 All of a sudden, football was gone.\u00a0 I was ready to retire, and that was really sweet the way God did that through a blitz.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarriage blitzes us because we\u2019re designed to be different, and those differences will come at us, frequently.\u00a0 First of all, from our person standpoint, Stacy and I got a high degree of difference, given to us by God.\u00a0 We\u2014our styles are so different.\u00a0 Our kids can hear it in the house every day.\u00a0 We have a great marriage; but we\u2019re learning more, and more, and more.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 These great strengths make for a fabulous team in crisis\u2014like that year we went through in \u201991\u2014awesome team because of those differences.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnyway, Keegan\u2014one day, our five-year-old\u2014is walking through the hallway.\u00a0 He sees Mommy and Daddy having a conversation.\u00a0 We\u2019re disagreeing because we see things differently.\u00a0 He says, \u201cDaddy, you guys are too different to be married,\u201d [Laughter] \u2014pretty insightful five-year-old.\u00a0 I think, \u201cOh, my gosh!\u00a0 This is a teachable moment.\u00a0 I better say something good!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I get down on my knee, while I\u2019m thinking.\u00a0 \u201cOkay.\u00a0 No, Keegan.\u00a0 Keegan, the reason Mommy and Daddy are married is because we\u2019re different.\u00a0 You know, how on a football team there are big linemen, and little quarterbacks, and there are fast receivers?\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s because their differences make them a better team.\u00a0 In marriage, God made men and women very different so they can become a really good team to be a good mommy and daddy.\u00a0 The good thing for you is we have God to glue us together.\u201d\u00a0 Then, I sat there a minute and thought, \u201cThat was a really good talk.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \u201cWell, done, Jeff!\u201d\u00a0 But Keegan trumped me because his little five-year-old brain went to work quickly.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou know what, though, Dad?\u00a0 I think with you guys it\u2019s going to take Crazy Glue!\u201d [Laughter] \u2014from a five-year-old!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s what I want to touch on.\u00a0 There is a huge, and disguised, and unnoticed blitz that is impacting marriage, and family, and relationships in America\u2014and around the world.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to give you kind of a really simple paradigm, through which to see this blitz\u2014that will help us overcome it.\u00a0 This paradigm is, I think, something crucial to pass onto the next generation because this generation, that is being raised right now, is being raised in the most consumeristic, individualistic, selfish culture in the history of mankind.\u00a0 This consumer culture is the blitz that we\u2019re facing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTwenty to thirty minutes of talk, from a dad, in a week, is what a child gets.\u00a0 They get forty hours of media, including the TV, and the web, and everything else.\u00a0 They see 500 advertisements a day\u2014150,000 in a year.\u00a0 Close to 3 million advertisements by the time they are 20 or 25 years old.\u00a0 I mean, we are just inundated with messages that say: \u201cYou\u2019re the consumer.\u00a0 Go for the gusto.\u00a0 Make it work for you.\u00a0 Trade it in.\u00a0 Get a new one.\u00a0 Be happy.\u00a0 It\u2019s about you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me read a letter that a 29-year-old guy, named Jeremy, wrote me when I said, \u201cHey, give me some insight into what Gen-Y thinks about marriage and relationships.\u201d\u00a0 He said: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn my experience, the fear of divorce is very real in Gen-Y.\u00a0 Many of us saw our parents, friends\u2019 parents, or close family members go through divorce.\u00a0 The inevitable question is, \u201cIf they can\u2019t do it, what makes me think I can?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think a major challenge for my generation is consumerism.\u00a0 We\u2019ve grown up in a country that\u2019s known incredible prosperity and freedom.\u00a0 We have been inundated with advertisements since we were born.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been taught, by society, not to be satisfied with what we have.\u00a0 We need to update and upgrade constantly, or we become outdated and irrelevant.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost of us have never had to learn how to be content.\u00a0 Remember in Philippians how Paul talked about the secret of contentment\u2014completely the opposite of consumption, ownership, and stuff\u2014totally based in a relationship with Christ.\u00a0 \u201cI can handle all things through Him who gives me strength.\u201d\u00a0 We never had to learn how to be content.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou move into\u2014excuse me\u2014our society changes so fast we don\u2019t have to worry about being content.\u00a0 In fact, if you get content with what you have and you get too comfortable, you risk missing the next big thing and marginalizing yourself from your peers.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is what 22-year-olds are thinking about\u2014the pressure to keep up and stay relevant is overwhelming.\u00a0 But then, you move into marriage\u2014a world where there are no easy upgrades, no quick fixes.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve never learned how to be content\u2014how to stay committed to something, despite how it feels\u2014it\u2019ll be that much harder to succeed in marriage.\u00a0 Unless we make a blatant effort to view our spouse differently than we\u2019ve been taught to view everything else in society, we\u2019re going to slip into the consumeristic, hypnotic trance without even knowing it.\u00a0 That\u2019s the blitz I\u2019m talking about\u2014a consumeristic trance that we\u2019ve almost been hypnotized into\u2014that we end up putting into our relationships.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe mindset of marriage is at odds with the mindset of consumerism.\u00a0 It\u2019s not about getting and taking.\u00a0 It\u2019s about giving and exchanging.\u00a0 It\u2019s not anchored in what you feel.\u00a0 It\u2019s anchored in what you believe and what you are committed to.\u00a0 It\u2019s not self-focused; it\u2019s self-sacrificing.\u00a0 Most of us would never like to admit that we think like consumers, but it remains at the core of our culture and the foundation of society.\u00a0 It\u2019s almost impossible not to be affected by it and let it spill over into our marriages.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Philippians, Chapter 2, it tells us that with anything in life we should have the same attitude as Jesus Christ\u2014just before that, it explained His attitude, in a coaching point\u2014on how we should behave in relationships and, particularly in the most important relationship, marriage\u2014the one in which kids are stuck viewing through a consumeristic lens.\u00a0 Thus, its advertising isn\u2019t so good\u2014with a 50 percent divorce rate, and a bunch of old couples who seem like they never talk at the dinner table and restaurants, and supposedly don\u2019t have any sex.\u00a0 People have sex, and fun, and romance everywhere else.\u00a0 So, what kind of advertisement are we doing for God\u2019s institution?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, they\u2019re cohabiting instead and hooking up.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the results of that are totally destroying their self-esteem and their confidence in who God made them.\u00a0 They are stuck, floating on a sea of sin, and separation from God, and insecurity that makes relationships even less stable.\u00a0 But God says in verse 3 of Chapter 2: \u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit; but with humility of mind, let each of you regard one another as more important than himself.\u00a0 Don\u2019t merely look out for your own personal interests but also for the interests of others.\u201d\u00a0 What blueprints for marriage\u2014this is the most self-effacing\u2014other-serving relationship on earth.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYet, we have let consumerism slip into the Christian mentality of marriage.\u00a0 If Christians find themselves, four years into marriage, saying, \u201cBut I\u2019m not happy,\u201d that\u2019s because they made the center of their marriage their happiness\u2014which turned them into a consumer\u2014which meant they took more out of it than they were putting into it.\u00a0 The contrast of the world\u2019s consumer-approach to relationship to God\u2019s approach of being a sacrificial investor is the way that can get us out of this blitz.\u00a0 We could, then, show the world that marriage is beautiful.\u00a0 It\u2019s an awesome advertisement for the Gospel.\u00a0 It\u2019s a picture of covenant love.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the simple paradigm I\u2019m going to leave us with.\u00a0 Today, am I an investor or a consumer?\u00a0 The paradigm for us\u2014to crush in our life\u2014is the consumer paradigm.\u00a0 One of the great things we can give to the next generation is the question,\u00a0 \u201cHey, have you ever thought about how much consumerism shapes relationships; and how we tend to go into it with a selfish formula of, \u2018How much can I get from that person?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the complete opposite of what God intended for marriage.\u00a0 It\u2019s meant to be the place of selflessness and investment in another.\u00a0 Paradoxically, by laying down your life and giving yourself to someone else\u2014not waiting for a return or doing a transaction\u2014you get a bond that is so strong that God\u2019s love comes in and gives you both a greater return in the long-term.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a young husband who came into his home and found his wife in bed\u2014in an affair.\u00a0 Shock on all parties\u2019 sake; but he did something that was an investor mentality rather than a consumer mentality.\u00a0 He went away from that moment.\u00a0 He asked himself the question, \u201cHow could I have ever let my wife get to the point where she would fall in love and get into a sexual affair with another person?\u201d\u00a0 He came to the conclusion that even though he was a leader of a church, and he was coaching little league, and he was a good dad, and a busy guy doing good things\u2014not messing around with pornography or other stuff\u2014he\u2019d stopped paying attention to his wife.\u00a0 He\u2019d stop choosing her and investing in her.\u00a0 He\u2019d stopped making her his priority.\u00a0 Basically, he had allowed her to fall out of love with him.\u00a0 He came to her, and he apologized.\u00a0 By his apology, she melted more than she ever would have before.\u00a0 She found the grace of God.\u00a0 She confessed her sin.\u00a0 They are now together, and their kids and their grandkids will have a legacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause he took the blitz, and he looked inside, and he didn\u2019t act like a consumer who\u2019d been ripped off by his wife\u2019s affair\u2014he acted like an investor who said: \u201cMaybe I\u2019ve done some things to cause this problem.\u00a0 I should look at myself.\u00a0 Change myself.\u00a0 Turn to God and invest in her by apologizing myself.\u201d\u00a0 Look what it did\u2014an amazing rebirth of life for that marriage.\u00a0 That\u2019s the investor mentality versus the consumer mentality.\u00a0 We need to bring it to our lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, again, today, we\u2019ve been listening to a message from Jeff Kemp, former NFL quarterback, talking about how you face the blitzes that life throws at you\u2014and how you stand firm, and stay in the pocket, and get the job done; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I\u2019m thinking of 1 Corinthians, Chapter 16, verses 13-14.\u00a0 It says, \u201cBe watchful.\u00a0 Stand firm in the faith.\u201d\u00a0 It goes on to talk about acting like men, being strong, and doing everything we do in love.\u00a0 It begins, though, with being watchful.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s really what Jeff is challenging guys to do here\u2014is be watchful about what\u2019s coming at you\u2014know when to get out of the pocket, and when to flee the danger, and also, know how to go on the offense.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we\u2019re challenging men to do, as a practical application of this message, is get involved in Super Saturday tomorrow in a church, near you, in your
