In December of 2005, James Dungy, the son of the football coach for the Indianapolis Colts, Tony Dungy, took his own life.\u00a0 A few weeks later, right before the Super Bowl, Coach Dungy reflected on the pain his family had been through and how pain is sometimes a tool, in the hand of a merciful God.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tony Dungy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Pain sometimes lets us know we\u2019ve got a condition that needs to be healed.\u00a0 A lot of times, because of that pain\u2014that little temporary pain\u2014you learn what\u2019s harmful.\u00a0 You learn to fear the right things.\u00a0 Pain, inside, sometimes lets us know that, spiritually, we\u2019re not quite right.\u00a0 Sometimes pain is the only way that will turn us back to the Father.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Wednesday edition.\u00a0 With the Super Bowl coming up this weekend, everybody is kind of focused on the world of professional football.\u00a0 It\u2019s in all the papers and on TV everywhere.\u00a0 We thought, today, we would revisit what was a difficult chapter in the life of a figure whose life is tied to pro football because of his time as a player and as a coach.\u00a0 That is Coach Tony Dungy.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis, you and I, on a couple of occasions, have had the opportunity to sit down with Coach Dungy.\u00a0 In fact, we went up to the Colts headquarters in Indianapolis, back when he was still coaching for the Colts, and sat down and had an extended conversation with him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s such a real deal.\u00a0 Bob, our trip to Indianapolis\u2014when we interviewed him\u2014I was so impressed with him\u2014his authenticity, the family he grew up in as a young man, the impact of his father upon his life, and his mother.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s so easy\u2014among professional sports, among the coaches and the athletes\u2014to kind of lose your perspective, but he just doesn\u2019t seem to have lost his perspective in the midst of a lot of competing priorities.\u00a0 He is fully committed to his wife, and his family, and his faith.\u00a0 Coach Dungy is authentic.\u00a0 The reason for that is, as a man, he has placed his faith in Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Not only have we had the chance to interview Coach Dungy, but I\u2019ve had the opportunity, on more than one occasion, of going to the Super Bowl, and doing a chapel for one of the teams, and also going to the Athletes in Action NFL Super Bowl breakfast.\u00a0 It\u2019s a first-class breakfast for somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 people.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great breakfast, where they honor sports figures who have character and faith and who are models to the next generation.\u00a0 One of those figures that they honor at the breakfast is Bart Starr.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had the privilege of meeting him.\u00a0 He\u2019s a great competitor.\u00a0 Of course, he was a quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.\u00a0 They\u2019ve actually created an award in his honor.<\/p>\n<p>At that breakfast, one of the things they do is conclude the breakfast by actually sharing the Gospel, and making a presentation about who Jesus Christ is, and what His claims are to each individual person\u2019s life.\u00a0 Here\u2019s this crowd of people, who are all there to celebrate two teams that made it to the pinnacle of their sport\u2019s finals; and yet, there is an organization, Athletes in Action, showing up, setting up these sports figures to make the Gospel known in a clear way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Back in 2006, Coach Dungy had been invited to be the keynote speaker at the Super Bowl breakfast.\u00a0 It turned out that just weeks before he was to speak, his son had taken his own life.\u00a0 You remember there was a lot of media scrutiny.\u00a0 There was a spotlight on this event, as a result of what the Dungy family had been through.\u00a0 As the Coach spoke at the Super Bowl breakfast that morning, he reflected on the lessons he had learned from being a dad and raising a number of boys\u2014raising different children.\u00a0 It was a powerful presentation.<\/p>\n<p>[Recorded Message]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tony Dungy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m going to illustrate three things that I\u2019ve learned about the Lord.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to use my boys to illustrate that.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to start with my middle son, Eric.\u00a0 He looks more like me than my other two boys do.\u00a0 Matter of fact, he looks so much like me that when I look at him, I see myself; and I see a lot of the same things.\u00a0 Eric is very, very competitive\u2014ultra-competitive.\u00a0 He\u2019s focused on sports to where it\u2019s almost a problem.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s super-emotional to where it\u2019s almost scary.\u00a0 Now, those of you that see me now would say, \u201cWait a minute.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t sound a lot like you,\u201d but it was me at 14.\u00a0 I grew up not too far from here in Jackson, Michigan.\u00a0 There are some people in this room that knew me when I was 14 years old.\u00a0 When people talk about me being composed and calm on the sideline, my buddies laugh because that\u2019s not the guy they remember.<\/p>\n<p>I was the guy that got the technical fouls, that got thrown out of the games, and that got in the fights.\u00a0 I quit the team my senior year because I had a disagreement with the coach.\u00a0 Now, when people ask me, \u201cHow do you stay so calm on the sideline?\u201d I really have to tell them, \u201cIt is Christian maturity.\u201d\u00a0 It didn\u2019t happen overnight.\u00a0 It was a process.\u00a0 So, when I look at Eric and I look at myself, that\u2019s one of the things I know about God.\u00a0 I know how powerful His Spirit is.\u00a0 I know that He can change people, and I know that He\u2019ll do that if we allow Him to.<\/p>\n<p>The second way I\u2019ve seen God\u2019s hand at work is through our youngest son.\u00a0 Jordan was born with a rare\u2014very, very rare neurological condition.\u00a0 It\u2019s called Congenital Insensitivity to Pain\u2014only two or three cases in the whole United States.\u00a0 It\u2019s a little more prevalent in other countries, but there have been only about three diagnosed in the United States.\u00a0 Basically, what happens\u2014he\u2019s missing the conductors that allow the nerve signals to go from his body to his brain.<\/p>\n<p>That sounds like it is good, at the beginning; but I promise you, it\u2019s not.\u00a0 We\u2019ve learned a lot about pain in the last five years since we\u2019ve had Jordan.\u00a0 We\u2019ve learned that some hurts are really necessary for kids.\u00a0 Pain is necessary really for kids to find out the difference between what\u2019s good and what\u2019s harmful.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan loves cookies, and cookies are good for you; but in his mind, \u201cIf they\u2019re good out on the plate, they\u2019re even better in the oven.\u201d\u00a0 So, he will go right in the oven\u2014if my wife\u2019s not looking, when she\u2019s baking them\u2014reach in, take the pan out, burn his hands, eat the cookie that\u2019s too hot, burn his tongue, and never feel it.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t know that that\u2019s bad for him.\u00a0 When we go to the park, he\u2019ll go on the slide.\u00a0 All kids know it is fun to go up the slide and slide down.\u00a0 He has fun doing that, too.\u00a0 To him, it\u2019s just as much fun jumping off from the top.\u00a0 He has no fear of anything.\u00a0 So, we constantly have to watch him.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve also learned that pain actually helps the body heal.\u00a0 Something I didn\u2019t know, until talking with the doctor, is that you get an injury\u2014your brain senses that there\u2019s pain there.\u00a0 It sends the right healing agents, naturally, to that spot because it senses something is wrong.\u00a0 Without that sensation\u2014of feeling something\u2019s wrong\u2014Jordan\u2019s body doesn\u2019t send those healing agents.\u00a0 Consequently, he\u2019s got cuts from June and July that haven\u2019t healed yet.<\/p>\n<p>The other thing we\u2019ve noticed with him and our other four kids, is that pain is the quickest way to get your kids to come back to you.\u00a0 If you have young kids, you\u2019ve all experienced that before:\u00a0 \u201cHey, don\u2019t do this,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t do that.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to get hurt.\u201d\u00a0 They don\u2019t always listen; but as soon as they get hurt, they come screaming back to you.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a daughter\u2014the same way.\u00a0 She\u2019s the same way.\u00a0 As soon as something happens, she runs, and races, and is very dramatic; but she comes and jumps in your arms.\u00a0 \u201cJordan, be careful.\u00a0 Don\u2019t run in the house.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to run into something.\u00a0 You\u2019ll get hurt.\u201d\u00a0 BAM! But he keeps on going because he doesn\u2019t feel the pain, and he doesn\u2019t turn back to us all the time.\u00a0 So, that\u2019s what we\u2019ve seen.<\/p>\n<p>Really, you get the question all the time:\u00a0 \u201cWhy does the Lord allow pain in your life?\u201d \u201cWhy do bad things happen to good people?\u201d \u201cIf God is a God of love, why does He allow these hurtful things?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019ve learned that, a lot of times, because of that pain\u2014that little temporary pain\u2014you learn what\u2019s harmful.\u00a0 You learn to fear the right things.\u00a0 Pain sometimes lets us know we\u2019ve got a condition that needs to be healed.\u00a0 Pain, inside, sometimes lets us know that, spiritually, we\u2019re not quite right.\u00a0 We need to be healed; and God will send that healing agent, right to the spot.\u00a0 Sometimes, pain is the only way that will turn us, as kids, back to the Father.\u00a0 So, we\u2019ve learned a lot about that.<\/p>\n<p>But I think the most important lesson that I\u2019ve learned about the Lord, I\u2019ve learned from my oldest son, James.\u00a0 As you heard, James would have been 19; but he died right before Christmas.\u00a0 James was a Christian.\u00a0 He was, by far, the most sensitive, the most compassionate of all our boys.\u00a0 Because of that, he was always looking around for that person that needed help.\u00a0 He was always looking for the one that was hurting, the one that was alone.<\/p>\n<p>Most of his friends that we had gotten to know\u2014if I ever asked them, \u201cHow did you get to know my son?\u201d, they\u2019d say, \u201cWell, I was sitting by myself in the cafeteria one day,\u201d or, \u201cOne day, the kids were picking on me,\u201d or, \u201cOne day, I was walking home by myself; and he gave me a ride.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the kind of guy he was\u2014very, very compassionate\u2014very sensitive.\u00a0 As most teenage boys today, James was getting a lot of messages from the world that maybe that\u2019s not the way to be.\u00a0 You\u2019ve all seen them\u2014on TV, in the movies, the music they listen to, the magazines that they\u2019re able to read.\u00a0 You get those conflicting signals\u2014mixed signals.\u00a0 He was struggling very much with how you should respond to the world.\u00a0 He ended up taking his life right before Christmas.\u00a0 It was tough.\u00a0 It was very, very painful; but as painful as it was, there were some good things that came out of it.<\/p>\n<p>When I was at the funeral, I talked about one of my biggest regrets.\u00a0 James was home for Thanksgiving and was leaving\u2014going back to school and going back to work\u2014just the normal process\u2014you don\u2019t think about it.\u00a0 I said, \u201cHey, I\u2019ll see you later.\u201d\u00a0 My daughter took him to the airport.\u00a0 We just exchanged, \u201cSee you later.\u201d\u00a0 That was the last time I saw him.\u00a0 I talked to him on the phone a lot, but never saw him again.\u00a0 I shared, at the funeral, that my biggest regret was that I didn\u2019t give him a big hug the very last time I saw him.<\/p>\n<p>I met a guy, the next day after the funeral.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou know, I was there.\u00a0 I heard you talking.\u00a0 I took off work today.\u00a0 I called my son and I said: \u2018I\u2019m going to take you to the movies.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to spend some time and go to dinner.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 That was a real, real blessing to me.\u00a0 I\u2019ve gotten a lot of letters, like that, from people who have heard what I said and said, \u201cHey, you brought me a little closer to my son,\u201d or, \u201c...a little closer to my daughter.\u201d\u00a0 That is a tremendous blessing.<\/p>\n<p>We were able to donate some of James\u2019 organs to an organ donors program.\u00a0 Got a letter back about two weeks ago that two people had received his corneas and now can see.\u00a0 [Audience applause]\u00a0 That has been a tremendous blessing.<\/p>\n<p>I had the privilege of talking to a young man, who was James\u2019 age, who was going through some struggles\u2014didn\u2019t know if he could make it.\u00a0 We talked for about a week, and his voice just didn\u2019t sound good; but every day, it sounded a little bit better and better.\u00a0 About ten days later, he called me back and asked me how I was doing.\u00a0 I could just feel, in his voice, he was doing better; and he was going to make it.\u00a0 That was a tremendous blessing.<\/p>\n<p>I got a letter from a girl, in our church, who had grown up with James.\u00a0 She said: \u201cYou know, we\u2019ve been going to the same church in Tampa for all these years.\u00a0 I sat there in church every Sunday, but never really knowing if there was a God or not.\u00a0 I came to the funeral because I knew James.\u00a0 When I saw what happened at the funeral\u2014and your family, and the celebration, and how it was handled\u2014that was the first time I realized, \u201cThere has to be a God.\u201d\u00a0 I accepted Christ into my life, and my life\u2019s been different since that day.\u201d\u00a0 [Audience applause]\u00a0 That was an awesome blessing.<\/p>\n<p>So, all those things have made me realize what God\u2019s love is all about.\u00a0 But here\u2019s the biggest part of that\u2014I know, in my heart, that James\u2019 death has affected many people and benefitted many people.\u00a0 That makes me feel better.\u00a0 But I also know this: \u201cIf God had had a conversation with me and said:\u00a0 \u2018I can help some people see.\u00a0 I can heal some relationships.\u00a0 I can save some people\u2019s lives.\u00a0 I can give some people eternal life\u2014but I have to take your son to do it.\u00a0 You make the choice.\u201d\u00a0 I know how I\u2019d have answered that.\u00a0 I\u2019d have said \u201cNo, I\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 As great as all that is, I don\u2019t want to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s the awesome thing about God.\u00a0 He had that choice; and He said, \u201cYes, I\u2019m going to do it\u201d\u20142,000 years ago, with His Son, Jesus, on the cross.\u00a0 And because He said, \u201cYes,\u201d\u2014because He made the choice that I wouldn\u2019t make, as a parent\u2014that\u2019s paid the way for us to come back into relationship with Him.\u00a0 That\u2019s let us know, with a certainty, that we can live in heaven.\u00a0 That\u2019s the benefit I got by accepting Christ into my heart.\u00a0 That\u2019s the benefit James got.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I went back to work one week after my son died.\u00a0 I had a lot of media people\u2014a lot of sports writers, a lot of fans ask me: \u201cHow could you get back to work so quick after something like that?\u00a0 How have you recovered so quickly?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m not totally recovered.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if I ever will be.\u00a0 It\u2019s still very, very painful; but I was able to come back because of something one of my good Christian friends said to me, after the funeral.\u00a0\u00a0 He said this: \u201cJames accepted Christ into his heart.\u00a0 So, you know he\u2019s in heaven; right?\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cRight.\u00a0 I know that.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cSo, with all you know about heaven, if you had the power to bring him back right now; would you?\u201d\u00a0 When I thought about that, I said: \u201cNo, I wouldn\u2019t.\u00a0 I would not want him back with what I know about heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what helped me through the grieving process.\u00a0 Because of Christ\u2019s Spirit in me, I have the confidence that James is there, at peace with the Lord.\u00a0 I have a peace of mind, in the midst of something that\u2019s very, very painful.\u00a0 That\u2019s my prayer today\u2014that everyone in this room would know that same thing.<\/p>\n<p>[Studio]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Once again, today we have been listening to a message from the former coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Coach Tony Dungy\u2014a message presented at the 2006 Super Bowl Breakfast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to believe we\u2019re talking right now to an individual who, because of the compelling nature of what Tony just shared, has come to the realization that he needs to decide what he needs to do with Jesus Christ\u2014or perhaps she needs to decide what she needs to do with Jesus Christ.\u00a0 Are you going to trust in Him to be your Savior\u2014your Lord, your Master, your Redeemer\u2014who can redeem you from certain judgment or are you going to trust in yourself?\u00a0 Are you going to think you\u2019re going to make it to God through your good works?\u00a0 That simply will not work.\u00a0 You\u2019re not going to get there.\u00a0 In fact, I want to just read the words of Christ to that person who is contemplating his eternal future.\u00a0 Jesus said in John, Chapter 5, verse 24, \u201cTruly, truly I say to you, he who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment but has passed out of death into life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A person who doesn\u2019t know Jesus Christ is in death.\u00a0 They are under certain judgment.\u00a0 They have to pay their own price for their own sins.\u00a0 The reality is\u2014they don\u2019t have the payment that God demands\u2014but the person that places their faith in Jesus Christ, who paid the penalty for your sin by becoming a man\u2014living a life of perfection over 30 years, and then going to a cross and paying the price on the cross for your sins, and bearing the wrath of God\u2014He makes an offer to you because He\u2019s alive from the dead today and says, \u201cIf you\u2019ll place your faith in Me, you can pass out of death and judgment and into life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question is: \u201cWhat are you going to do with Christ?\u00a0 Will you take Him at His word and place your faith, right where you are?\u201d\u00a0 Dungy, the son of the football coach for the Indianapolis Colts, Tony Dungy, took his own life.\u00a0 A few weeks later, right before the Super Bowl, Coach Dungy reflected on the pain his family had been through and how pain is sometimes a tool, in the hand of a merciful God.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tony Dungy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Pain sometimes lets us know we\u2019ve got a condition that needs to be healed.\u00a0 A lot of times, because of that pain\u2014that little temporary pain\u2014you learn what\u2019s harmful.\u00a0 You learn to fear the right things.\u00a0 Pain, inside, sometimes lets us know that, spiritually, we\u2019re not quite right.\u00a0 Sometimes pain is the only way that will turn us back to the Father.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Wednesday edition.\u00a0 With the Super Bowl coming up this weekend, everybody is kind of focused on the world of professional football.\u00a0 It\u2019s in all the papers and on TV everywhere.\u00a0 We thought, today, we would revisit what was a difficult chapter in the life of a figure whose life is tied to pro football because of his time as a player and as a coach.\u00a0 That is Coach Tony Dungy.<\/p>\n<p>Dennis, you and I, on a couple of occasions, have had the opportunity to sit down with Coach Dungy.\u00a0 In fact, we went up to the Colts headquarters in Indianapolis, back when he was still coaching for the Colts, and sat down and had an extended conversation with him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s such a real deal.\u00a0 Bob, our trip to Indianapolis\u2014when we interviewed him\u2014I was so impressed with him\u2014his authenticity, the family he grew up in as a young man, the impact of his father upon his life, and his mother.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s so easy\u2014among professional sports, among the coaches and the athletes\u2014to kind of lose your perspective, but he just doesn\u2019t seem to have lost his perspective in the midst of a lot of competing priorities.\u00a0 He is fully committed to his wife, and his family, and his faith.\u00a0 Coach Dungy is authentic.\u00a0 The reason for that is, as a man, he has placed his faith in Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Not only have we had the chance to interview Coach Dungy, but I\u2019ve had the opportunity, on more than one occasion, of going to the Super Bowl, and doing a chapel for one of the teams, and also going to the Athletes in Action NFL Super Bowl breakfast.\u00a0 It\u2019s a first-class breakfast for somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 people.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great breakfast, where they honor sports figures who have character and faith and who are models to the next generation.\u00a0 One of those figures that they honor at the breakfast is Bart Starr.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had the privilege of meeting him.\u00a0 He\u2019s a great competitor.\u00a0 Of course, he was a quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.\u00a0 They\u2019ve actually created an award in his honor.<\/p>\n<p>At that breakfast, one of the things they do is conclude the breakfast by actually sharing the Gospel, and making a presentation about who Jesus Christ is, and what His claims are to each individual person\u2019s life.\u00a0 Here\u2019s this crowd of people, who are all there to celebrate two teams that made it to the pinnacle of their sport\u2019s finals; and yet, there is an organization, Athletes in Action, showing up, setting up these sports figures to make the Gospel known in a clear way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Back in 2006, Coach Dungy had been invited to be the keynote speaker at the Super Bowl breakfast.\u00a0 It turned out that just weeks before he was to speak, his son had taken his own life.\u00a0 You remember there was a lot of media scrutiny.\u00a0 There was a spotlight on this event, as a result of what the Dungy family had been through.\u00a0 As the Coach spoke at the Super Bowl breakfast that morning, he reflected on the lessons he had learned from being a dad and raising a number of boys\u2014raising different children.\u00a0 It was a powerful presentation.<\/p>\n<p>[Recorded Message]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tony Dungy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m going to illustrate three things that I\u2019ve learned about the Lord.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to use my boys to illustrate that.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to start with my middle son, Eric.\u00a0 He looks more like me than my other two boys do.\u00a0 Matter of fact, he looks so much like me that when I look at him, I see myself; and I see a lot of the same things.\u00a0 Eric is very, very competitive\u2014ultra-competitive.\u00a0 He\u2019s focused on sports to where it\u2019s almost a problem.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s super-emotional to where it\u2019s almost scary.\u00a0 Now, those of you that see me now would say, \u201cWait a minute.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t sound a lot like you,\u201d but it was me at 14.\u00a0 I grew up not too far from here in Jackson, Michigan.\u00a0 There are some people in this room that knew me when I was 14 years old.\u00a0 When people talk about me being composed and calm on the sideline, my buddies laugh because that\u2019s not the guy they remember.<\/p>\n<p>I was the guy that got the technical fouls, that got thrown out of the games, and that got in the fights.\u00a0 I quit the team my senior year because I had a disagreement with the coach.\u00a0 Now, when people ask me, \u201cHow do you stay so calm on the sideline?\u201d I really have to tell them, \u201cIt is Christian maturity.\u201d\u00a0 It didn\u2019t happen overnight.\u00a0 It was a process.\u00a0 So, when I look at Eric and I look at myself, that\u2019s one of the things I know about God.\u00a0 I know how powerful His Spirit is.\u00a0 I know that He can change people, and I know that He\u2019ll do that if we allow Him to.<\/p>\n<p>The second way I\u2019ve seen God\u2019s hand at work is through our youngest son.\u00a0 Jordan was born with a rare\u2014very, very rare neurological condition.\u00a0 It\u2019s called Congenital Insensitivity to Pain\u2014only two or three cases in the whole United States.\u00a0 It\u2019s a little more prevalent in other countries, but there have been only about three diagnosed in the United States.\u00a0 Basically, what happens\u2014he\u2019s missing the conductors that allow the nerve signals to go from his body to his brain.<\/p>\n<p>That sounds like it is good, at the beginning; but I promise you, it\u2019s not.\u00a0 We\u2019ve learned a lot about pain in the last five years since we\u2019ve had Jordan.\u00a0 We\u2019ve learned that some hurts are really necessary for kids.\u00a0 Pain is necessary really for kids to find out the difference between what\u2019s good and what\u2019s harmful.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan loves cookies, and cookies are good for you; but in his mind, \u201cIf they\u2019re good out on the plate, they\u2019re even better in the oven.\u201d\u00a0 So, he will go right in the oven\u2014if my wife\u2019s not looking, when she\u2019s baking them\u2014reach in, take the pan out, burn his hands, eat the cookie that\u2019s too hot, burn his tongue, and never feel it.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t know that that\u2019s bad for him.\u00a0 When we go to the park, he\u2019ll go on the slide.\u00a0 All kids know it is fun to go up the slide and slide down.\u00a0 He has fun doing that, too.\u00a0 To him, it\u2019s just as much fun jumping off from the top.\u00a0 He has no fear of anything.\u00a0 So, we constantly have to watch him.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve also learned that pain actually helps the body heal.\u00a0 Something I didn\u2019t know, until talking with the doctor, is that you get an injury\u2014your brain senses that there\u2019s pain there.\u00a0 It sends the right healing agents, naturally, to that spot because it senses something is wrong.\u00a0 Without that sensation\u2014of feeling something\u2019s wrong\u2014Jordan\u2019s body doesn\u2019t send those healing agents.\u00a0 Consequently, he\u2019s got cuts from June and July that haven\u2019t healed yet.<\/p>\n<p>The other thing we\u2019ve noticed with him and our other four kids, is that pain is the quickest way to get your kids to come back to you.\u00a0 If you have young kids, you\u2019ve all experienced that before:\u00a0 \u201cHey, don\u2019t do this,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t do that.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to get hurt.\u201d\u00a0 They don\u2019t always listen; but as soon as they get hurt, they come screaming back to you.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a daughter\u2014the same way.\u00a0 She\u2019s the same way.\u00a0 As soon as something happens, she runs, and races, and is very dramatic; but she comes and jumps in your arms.\u00a0 \u201cJordan, be careful.\u00a0 Don\u2019t run in the house.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to run into something.\u00a0 You\u2019ll get hurt.\u201d\u00a0 BAM! But he keeps on going because he doesn\u2019t feel the pain, and he doesn\u2019t turn back to us all the time.\u00a0 So, that\u2019s what we\u2019ve seen.<\/p>\n<p>Really, you get the question all the time:\u00a0 \u201cWhy does the Lord allow pain in your life?\u201d \u201cWhy do bad things happen to good people?\u201d \u201cIf God is a God of love, why does He allow these hurtful things?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019ve learned that, a lot of times, because of that pain\u2014that little temporary pain\u2014you learn what\u2019s harmful.\u00a0 You learn to fear the right things.\u00a0 Pain sometimes lets us know we\u2019ve got a condition that needs to be healed.\u00a0 Pain, inside, sometimes lets us know that, spiritually, we\u2019re not quite right.\u00a0 We need to be healed; and God will send that healing agent, right to the spot.\u00a0 Sometimes, pain is the only way that will turn us, as kids, back to the Father.\u00a0 So, we\u2019ve learned a lot about that.<\/p>\n<p>But I think the most important lesson that I\u2019ve learned about the Lord, I\u2019ve learned from my oldest son, James.\u00a0 As you heard, James would have been 19; but he died right before Christmas.\u00a0 James was a Christian.\u00a0 He was, by far, the most sensitive, the most compassionate of all our boys.\u00a0 Because of that, he was always looking around for that person that needed help.\u00a0 He was always looking for the one that was hurting, the one that was alone.<\/p>\n<p>Most of his friends that we had gotten to know\u2014if I ever asked them, \u201cHow did you get to know my son?\u201d, they\u2019d say, \u201cWell, I was sitting by myself in the cafeteria one day,\u201d or, \u201cOne day, the kids were picking on me,\u201d or, \u201cOne day, I was walking home by myself; and he gave me a ride.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the kind of guy he was\u2014very, very compassionate\u2014very sensitive.\u00a0 As most teenage boys today, James was getting a lot of messages from the world that maybe that\u2019s not the way to be.\u00a0 You\u2019ve all seen them\u2014on TV, in the movies, the music they listen to, the magazines that they\u2019re able to read.\u00a0 You get those conflicting signals\u2014mixed signals.\u00a0 He was struggling very much with how you should respond to the world.\u00a0 He ended up taking his life right before Christmas.\u00a0 It was tough.\u00a0 It was very, very painful; but as painful as it was, there were some good things that came out of it.<\/p>\n<p>When I was at the funeral, I talked about one of my biggest regrets.\u00a0 James was home for Thanksgiving and was leaving\u2014going back to school and going back to work\u2014just the normal process\u2014you don\u2019t think about it.\u00a0 I said, \u201cHey, I\u2019ll see you later.\u201d\u00a0 My daughter took him to the airport.\u00a0 We just exchanged, \u201cSee you later.\u201d\u00a0 That was the last time I saw him.\u00a0 I talked to him on the phone a lot, but never saw him again.\u00a0 I shared, at the funeral, that my biggest regret was that I didn\u2019t give him a big hug the very last time I saw him.<\/p>\n<p>I met a guy, the next day after the funeral.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou know, I was there.\u00a0 I heard you talking.\u00a0 I took off work today.\u00a0 I called my son and I said: \u2018I\u2019m going to take you to the movies.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to spend some time and go to dinner.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 That was a real, real blessing to me.\u00a0 I\u2019ve gotten a lot of letters, like that, from people who have heard what I said and said, \u201cHey, you brought me a little closer to my son,\u201d or, \u201c...a little closer to my daughter.\u201d\u00a0 That is a tremendous blessing.<\/p>\n<p>We were able to donate some of James\u2019 organs to an organ donors program.\u00a0 Got a letter back about two weeks ago that two people had received his corneas and now can see.\u00a0 [Audience applause]\u00a0 That has been a tremendous blessing.<\/p>\n<p>I had the privilege of talking to a young man, who was James\u2019 age, who was going through some struggles\u2014didn\u2019t know if he could make it.\u00a0 We talked for about a week, and his voice just didn\u2019t sound good; but every day, it sounded a little bit better and better.\u00a0 About ten days later, he called me back and asked me how I was doing.\u00a0 I could just feel, in his voice, he was doing better; and he was going to make it.\u00a0 That was a tremendous blessing.<\/p>\n<p>I got a letter from a girl, in our church, who had grown up with James.\u00a0 She said: \u201cYou know, we\u2019ve been going to the same church in Tampa for all these years.\u00a0 I sat there in church every Sunday, but never really knowing if there was a God or not.\u00a0 I came to the funeral because I knew James.\u00a0 When I saw what happened at the funeral\u2014and your family, and the celebration, and how it was handled\u2014that was the first time I realized, \u201cThere has to be a God.\u201d\u00a0 I accepted Christ into my life, and my life\u2019s been different since that day.\u201d\u00a0 [Audience applause]\u00a0 That was an awesome blessing.<\/p>\n<p>So, all those things have made me realize what God\u2019s love is all about.\u00a0 But here\u2019s the biggest part of that\u2014I know, in my heart, that James\u2019 death has affected many people and benefitted many people.\u00a0 That makes me feel better.\u00a0 But I also know this: \u201cIf God had had a conversation with me and said:\u00a0 \u2018I can help some people see.\u00a0 I can heal some relationships.\u00a0 I can save some people\u2019s lives.\u00a0 I can give some people eternal life\u2014but I have to take your son to do it.\u00a0 You make the choice.\u201d\u00a0 I know how I\u2019d have answered that.\u00a0 I\u2019d have said \u201cNo, I\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 As great as all that is, I don\u2019t want to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s the awesome thing about God.\u00a0 He had that choice; and He said, \u201cYes, I\u2019m going to do it\u201d\u20142,000 years ago, with His Son, Jesus, on the cross.\u00a0 And because He said, \u201cYes,\u201d\u2014because He made the choice that I wouldn\u2019t make, as a parent\u2014that\u2019s paid the way for us to come back into relationship with Him.\u00a0 That\u2019s let us know, with a certainty, that we can live in heaven.\u00a0 That\u2019s the benefit I got by accepting Christ into my heart.\u00a0 That\u2019s the benefit James got.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I went back to work one week after my son died.\u00a0 I had a lot of media people\u2014a lot of sports writers, a lot of fans ask me: \u201cHow could you get back to work so quick after something like that?\u00a0 How have you recovered so quickly?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m not totally recovered.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if I ever will be.\u00a0 It\u2019s still very, very painful; but I was able to come back because of something one of my good Christian friends said to me, after the funeral.\u00a0\u00a0 He said this: \u201cJames accepted Christ into his heart.\u00a0 So, you know he\u2019s in heaven; right?\u201d\u00a0 I said: \u201cRight.\u00a0 I know that.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cSo, with all you know about heaven, if you had the power to bring him back right now; would you?\u201d\u00a0 When I thought about that, I said: \u201cNo, I wouldn\u2019t.\u00a0 I would not want him back with what I know about heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what helped me through the grieving process.\u00a0 Because of Christ\u2019s Spirit in me, I have the confidence that James is there, at peace with the Lord.\u00a0 I have a peace of mind, in the midst of something that\u2019s very, very painful.\u00a0 That\u2019s my prayer today\u2014that everyone in this room would know that same thing.<\/p>\n<p>[Studio]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Once again, today we have been listening to a message from the former coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Coach Tony Dungy\u2014a message presented at the 2006 Super Bowl Breakfast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to believe we\u2019re talking right now to an individual who, because of the compelling nature of what Tony just shared, has come to the realization that he needs to decide what he needs to do with Jesus Christ\u2014or perhaps she needs to decide what she needs to do with Jesus Christ.\u00a0 Are you going to trust in Him to be your Savior\u2014your Lord, your Master, your Redeemer\u2014who can redeem you from certain judgment or are you going to trust in yourself?\u00a0 Are you going to think you\u2019re going to make it to God through your good works?\u00a0 That simply will not work.\u00a0 You\u2019re not going to get there.\u00a0 In fact, I want to just read the words of Christ to that person who is contemplating his eternal future.\u00a0 Jesus said in John, Chapter 5, verse 24, \u201cTruly, truly I say to you, he who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment but has passed out of death into life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A person who doesn\u2019t know Jesus Christ is in death.\u00a0 They are under certain judgment.\u00a0 They have to pay their own price for their own sins.\u00a0 The reality is\u2014they don\u2019t have the payment that God demands\u2014but the person that places their faith in Jesus Christ, who paid the penalty for your sin by becoming a man\u2014living a life of perfection over 30 years, and then going to a cross and paying the price on the cross for your sins, and bearing the wrath of God\u2014He makes an offer to you because He\u2019s alive from the dead today and says, \u201cIf you\u2019ll place your faith in Me, you can pass out of death and judgment and into life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question is: \u201cWhat are you going to do with Christ?\u00a0 Will you take Him at His word and place your faith, right where you are?\u201d\u00a0 Maybe, you need to pull off the road.\u00a0 Perhaps, you\u2019re at work or at home.\u00a0 Just stop, right now, and bow your head and pray the following prayer.\u00a0 The words of the prayer are not important\u2014as is the attitude of your heart:<\/p>\n<p>Lord Jesus, I need you.\u00a0 I accept You as my Savior and Lord\u2014my Master.\u00a0 I now trust You to do what I can\u2019t do.\u00a0 Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins, for being raised to life so that You can offer me life eternal.<\/p>\n<p>If you place your faith in Christ, He promised you that you will not come into judgment.\u00a0 You have just passed from death to life.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 You just began to live, as God designed it.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s what Coach Dungy\u2014what we\u2019re all about\u2014here on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>We want people to know about who Jesus Christ is and what He came to do for individual people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 On
