you're young enough that you could be my child\u2014and I wanted to fix up your future mate\u2014if you were my son, what would I fix up?\u00a0 I would look for, obviously, a believer that loved the Lord\u2014a girl that was heading where you were heading\u2014but do you know what I'd look for, guys?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you were a young man that loved opera, I wouldn't find, necessarily, a girl that loved camping; alright?\u00a0 I would get someone that was on the same page as you\u2014someone, that socially, you could hold hands; and you could go together in things.\u00a0 I'm a great believer in social compatibility.\u00a0 A premarital relationship has to be easy.\u00a0 Do you know what the problem with that is?\u00a0 It's that opposites attract.\u00a0 [Audience Laughter]\u00a0 What will drive you crazy about your mate are the things that attracted you to them at the outset, and you have to be careful of that.\u00a0 I'll make you a statement:\u00a0 \u201cTo the degree that you and your future mate are socially opposite, you had better balance it out with an equal amount of flexibility and holiness.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCouples that are real, real close in everything that they like\u2014if they don't watch it, they can get bored in life because it's easy just to go together\u2014but if you're really at a disparity, that's okay\u2014but if you\u2019ve got 30 pounds of difference, there had better be 30 pounds of flexibility.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve got 100 pounds of difference, with you and your mate, there\u2019d better be 100 pounds of holiness and godliness with each other. You've got to be able to enjoy the same things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did a wedding, one time, of the number-one draft choice in all the United States in professional baseball.\u00a0 He married Miss Texas.\u00a0 She was\u2014still is\u2014beautiful.\u00a0 This girl loved to dress up.\u00a0 She loved to go out.\u00a0 She loved evening gowns.\u00a0 She loved long, extended evenings at elegant restaurants, enjoying good company.\u00a0 This guy\u2014when baseball season was over\u2014he had a Ram pickup with a couple of guns\u2014decoys.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t country.\u00a0 This boy was rural!\u00a0 [Audience Laughter]\u00a0 You know what I\u2019m saying?\u00a0 He also happened to be handsome\u2014off the page, and she was beautiful\u2014off the page; and they got attracted.\u00a0 Both were Christians, and they were attracted to each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, ha ha\u2014the season would end.\u00a0 He would do what he had always done.\u00a0 He said, \"Honey, we're heading to the woods.\"\u00a0 \"I don't think I will.\"\u00a0 \"Well, I am!\"\u00a0 Well, I got a phone call.\u00a0 It got so problematic that she did the last thing that a woman will do, sometimes, to get her husband's attention\u2014she fired the flare.\u00a0 She said, \"I'm out of here.\"\u00a0 I don't think she meant to do it, but that's the only way she could get this kid\u2014that all of his life, he had done what pleased him.\u00a0 Well, all of a sudden, your marriage is a wake-up call.\u00a0 You have to do\u20141 Corinthians 7\u2014\"what pleases your mate.\"\u00a0 So, there has to be a social or some sort of compatibility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 5:\u00a0 There needs to be legitimate passion.\u00a0 It had better be there.\u00a0 I am a believer in this.\u00a0 A lot of guys aren't, but I am.\u00a0 When I say to a couple:\u00a0 \u201cDo you love the Lord?\u201d \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cAre you walking with God?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cOh, yes.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cAre y\u2019all heading to do great things?\u201d \u201cYes.\u201d \"Tell me about your physical purity.\u00a0 Are y\u2019all staying pure?\"\u00a0 That guy says to me, \"Well, we have no real temptation.\"\u00a0 I say, \"We've got a problem.\"\u00a0 [Audience Laughter]\u00a0 You don't just marry your best friend.\u00a0 You have to long for things that only are done with your mate.\u00a0 There is an intimacy, a passion, an excitement that has to be there.\u00a0 Maybe you can turn on the switch at the altar.\u00a0 I doubt it.\u00a0 There had better be some sort of passion because where there isn't, that gets really old really quick.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, the marriage bed is the follow-through on all of the spiritual, emotional, social love that you have.\u00a0 All of the delight that you feel in that woman\u2014 that has given herself and loved you\u2014the delight of it is shown in a physical expression in the marital bed.\u00a0 When a woman has such appreciation for that man\u2014who goes out in that pit, and works and struggles\u2014the follow-through is in the marital bed.\u00a0 When that isn't there, there is a problem.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn The Song of Solomon, they're not married until Chapter 4.\u00a0 There are things said in Chapter 2 and in Chapter 3, by the single woman\u2014that are exciting, indeed.\u00a0 She longs for him.\u00a0 That has to be there.\u00a0 Incidentally, let me throw a little note in here\u2014when these things aren't there\u2014when you have a couple that is getting married simply on shallow reasons and the impulse of just longing to be\u2014this primitive desire that, \u201cWe have to be married,\u201d you're going to start running into problems in communication\u2014problems in keeping the excitement going.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happens, a lot of times, is a couple will go to this kind of panacea.\u00a0 There's a salve that you can rub on a problem relationship.\u00a0 It will give it immediate relief for about a 24-hour period.\u00a0 It's called premarital sex.\u00a0 In the midst of premarital sex, the worst of couples feels like it's a great relationship.\u00a0 That's one of the great problems with premarital sex.\u00a0 It's not just that it is sin, but it creates a deception.\u00a0 It retards the real development of the deeper things.\u00a0 The reason that a couple falls into premarital sex:\u00a0 A lot of times, it is just the pure novelty of eroticism.\u00a0 On a scale of sexuality\u2014on a 1 to 10\u2014that's about a 12, and you can't maintain that in marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you get married, it's not going to be this explosive kind of thing that takes off.\u00a0 Oh, every once in a while, things happen; but generally, it's going to be the expression of character.\u00a0 It's going to come out of this fountain of character.\u00a0\u00a0 Now, when you get into premarital sex, you just go around the character.\u00a0 What happens, though, when you get into marriage\u2014is that premarital stuff doesn't happen like it used to.\u00a0 You end up just busting it up.\u00a0 Tony Evans says, \u201cWhat was a great deal becomes an ordeal, goes to a new deal; and you just try a new mate, and get out of it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if I was just an atheist, just on the counseling that I\u2019ve done, I would say, \u201cBeware of premarital sex.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ll go so far as to saying, \u201cSome of the bad marriages that I have seen, I can ask the question, \u2018Did you all fall into premarital sex?\u2019\u00a0 Usually, the answer is, \u2018Yes.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 And I tell them, \u201cYour relationship probably wouldn\u2019t have endured to the altar if you hadn\u2019t had premarital sex.\u00a0 You just kind of kept spraying lighter fluid on this thing, but the real coals and embers weren\u2019t there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to share one other thing here.\u00a0 The phenomena of a premarital relationship\u2014there\u2019s a lot of confusion and a lot of talk, right now, on dating.\u00a0 Let me give you my opinion, which is equally authoritative and true on this, just from my observations.\u00a0 [Audience laughter]\u00a0 If you want to write it down, don\u2019t write it down\u2014just listen.\u00a0 Let me give you, like Paul says, \u201cOne who by the grace of God is trustworthy,\u201d\u2014that has seen this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA date is a time of enjoyment and of pure recreation of people of the opposite sex at a common event.\u00a0 That's all that a date is.\u00a0 It's responsible people enjoying a common event.\u00a0 There's no escalation, there is no continuation, there are no expectations that you put on it.\u00a0 Everybody kind of \u201cdogs\u201d dating.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be honest with you\u2014if it came down to me hanging out with Michael Anadero, I\u2019d rather hang out with Sally.\u00a0 You know what I\u2019m saying?\u00a0 I just really enjoyed the presence of just neat girls, and just the opposite way of men and women.\u00a0 That\u2019s no problem; okay? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhenever that noun\u2014a \"date\"\u2014becomes a process\u2014\"dating\"\u2014you're continually seeing the same person over, and over, and over\u2014when that happens, escalation, expectations, and temptation <em>are<\/em> going to happen.\u00a0 That's a fact, and that's okay for the heat to build.\u00a0 But when you start seeing the same person, over and over, what you\u2019re getting into is preparation for courtship.\u00a0 The problem we have, in our culture, is we don\u2019t have a fearfulness of <em>dating<\/em>.\u00a0 Call it what you want\u2014going steady\u2014when the same people keep seeing each other, it\u2019s going to escalate.\u00a0 There are going to be expectations.\u00a0 There are going to be temptations.\u00a0 That\u2019s okay <em>if<\/em> you have a man and a woman that are theologically, morally, philosophically solid.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf that man, financially, can take on where that dating is going to go into courtship, is going to go into marriage\u2014if that man is in place\u2014if you have two people who are solid, who are sound\u2014that process that leads into courtship, that goes to the altar\u2014that's okay.\u00a0 But if you don't\u2014if you're not there socially, you're going to have to put off that wedding for years, and years, and years.\u00a0 That becomes a frustration and a temptation.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd if you're not there spiritually, then there are temptations that will come by that continual kind of relationship.\u00a0 Immature people in the continual same social context are\u2014I mean, it is striking matches, knee-deep in kerosene.\u00a0 So, dating is a thing all of you are going to do with the same person; but it demands a great deal of trepidation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0That is Tommy Nelson, the pastor at Denton Bible Church in Denton, Texas.\u00a0 Not long ago, he spoke to students at Cedarville University about what to look for and what to be if you want to be a married person someday.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI'll tell you, there had to be a wake-up call in that chapel that day for a lot of those college students who kind of thought, \"Okay, maybe I've been approaching this thing a little too casually.\u00a0 Maybe, I need to approach it with a little more earnest\u2014not only who I'm looking for, but who I am\u2014whether I'm the right kind of person to even be looking in the first place.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, I think that's extremely important.\u00a0 When a single person is in the process of becoming God's man and God's woman, and they do have what Tommy was talking about\u2014that edge to their lives\u2014an edge in the sense of growth, an edge in the sense of mission in what they're about as an individual\u2014it's so much easier to balance that tandem bicycle when it's moving, and it's moving in a direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSpiritually-speaking, I think what God wants from all of us is\u2014He wants us moving toward Him and moving in the direction of what His mission is for our lives.\u00a0 Single people really need to be a part of the Great Commission.\u00a0 In the process, as they find other people who are going with them in the same direction, that's when you meet your spouse.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat's how Barbara and I met.\u00a0 We were in the process of investing our lives in college-age students and high school students.\u00a0 In the process, came together.\u00a0 We didn't have to talk about our direction.\u00a0 We both had that direction.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSingle people, however, who aren't involved in going somewhere, sit back on a hammock.\u00a0 They begin to panic, and they begin to try to force relationships, and they fret.\u00a0 Instead of becoming the right person, they're looking for the right person.\u00a0 What singles today need to do is not panic; but they need to believe in God, and trust Him, and get on with life\u2014get on with being God's man, God's woman, and who He created you to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That's back to what Tommy said in this message.\u00a0 I love this quote from him:\u00a0 \"If you're single and you want to know who to marry, run as hard and as fast toward Jesus as you can.\u00a0 If, out of the corner of your eye, you see somebody running in the same direction, take a second look.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go.\u00a0 That's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That's the kind of advice singles need to hear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then, you may lock arms together and run in the same direction toward Christ.\u00a0 I have no idea what that decision to follow Christ has saved Barbara and me from, as we've run toward the Savior; but as I look around, in the culture, I see a lot of people who are bored, a lot of people who are running off to have an affair, a lot of people who are married to their jobs.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI'm telling you, Bob, this is a difficult culture to have what Tommy Nelson was talking about\u2014a successful marriage.\u00a0 I think that's why the spiritual dimension of life has to be at the very core of who we are and what we're about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0I talked to a friend of mine, just the other day.\u00a0 His daughter is just recently married.\u00a0 Two months into the marriage, she and her husband are experiencing financial difficulties.\u00a0 She just found out that one of the reasons for that is because some of their money is going to pay for internet pornography.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think to myself, \u201cI wish she could have heard Tommy's message, yesterday and today, when he talked about moral compatibility, theological compatibility, and ministry compatibility.\u201d\u00a0 You don't think about those things when you're head-over-heels in love with some smooth-talking guy or some real good-looking young lady.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0Yet, you've got to pull back and think about those kinds of things or you'll wind up like my friend's daughter, two months into her marriage, and full of heartache, and a loss of hope, wondering:\u00a0 \"How do we fix this?\u201d and, \u201cDid I just make the biggest mistake of my life?\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, you've hit on something there that a single person can't begin to appreciate unless they experience it.\u00a0 That's why they need to take our word for it here.\u00a0 You want to be in the process of becoming God's man and God's woman\u2014totally sold out to Jesus Christ\u2014not having to battle over the issue of whose you are.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you Jesus Christ's bond slave?\u00a0 Is He your Master?\u00a0 Have you written over the title deed of your life to Him?\u00a0 Once those issues have been settled, I'm telling you, the other issues that come your way are going to be much easier to deal with if you settle the issue of who is going to be your Lord and your Master.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And if you\u2019re going with somebody right now, or you\u2019re engaged to somebody right now, and they don\u2019t show that kind of spiritual vitality\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Be careful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Beware.\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you, you could be walking off into quicksand.\u00a0 There are people who get a form of religion for a period of time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right\u2014right before the wedding.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you\u2014on that, too.\u00a0 You and I have both seen couples who have been pulled, and lured, and sucked into relationships.\u00a0 Truthfully, they\u2019ve been manipulated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 At the <em>Weekend to Remember <\/em>marriage getaways that we do\u2014on Saturday, we have a couple of breakout sessions with the engaged couples\u2014we give them a process to go through\u2014a checklist to look at as they consider, \u201cAm I making the right decision by committing myself to this person for a lifetime?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019ve seen some couples walk out of that session and go:\u00a0 \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 We don\u2019t think that this is the right direction for us.\u201d\u00a0 Or maybe it\u2019s been one of the two that\u2019s made that decision.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we\u2019ve said many times, we would rather have those people make a hard decision, at that moment in time, than to go ahead, and get married, and find themselves, later on, going:\u00a0 \u201cDid I make a foolish choice?\u00a0 Did I walk into something that, if I had been paying more attention, I would have waited a little bit?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe <em>Weekend to Remember <\/em>is designed to be a fun and a romantic, relaxing getaway for married couples to get a deeper understanding of God\u2019s design and purpose for marriage. up?\u00a0 I would look for, obviously, a believer that loved the Lord\u2014a girl that was heading where you were heading\u2014but do you know what I'd look for, guys?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you were a young man that loved opera, I wouldn't find, necessarily, a girl that loved camping; alright?\u00a0 I would get someone that was on the same page as you\u2014someone, that socially, you could hold hands; and you could go together in things.\u00a0 I'm a great believer in social compatibility.\u00a0 A premarital relationship has to be easy.\u00a0 Do you know what the problem with that is?\u00a0 It's that opposites attract.\u00a0 [Audience Laughter]\u00a0 What will drive you crazy about your mate are the things that attracted you to them at the outset, and you have to be careful of that.\u00a0 I'll make you a statement:\u00a0 \u201cTo the degree that you and your future mate are socially opposite, you had better balance it out with an equal amount of flexibility and holiness.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCouples that are real, real close in everything that they like\u2014if they don't watch it, they can get bored in life because it's easy just to go together\u2014but if you're really at a disparity, that's okay\u2014but if you\u2019ve got 30 pounds of difference, there had better be 30 pounds of flexibility.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve got 100 pounds of difference, with you and your mate, there\u2019d better be 100 pounds of holiness and godliness with each other. You've got to be able to enjoy the same things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did a wedding, one time, of the number-one draft choice in all the United States in professional baseball.\u00a0 He married Miss Texas.\u00a0 She was\u2014still is\u2014beautiful.\u00a0 This girl loved to dress up.\u00a0 She loved to go out.\u00a0 She loved evening gowns.\u00a0 She loved long, extended evenings at elegant restaurants, enjoying good company.\u00a0 This guy\u2014when baseball season was over\u2014he had a Ram pickup with a couple of guns\u2014decoys.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t country.\u00a0 This boy was rural!\u00a0 [Audience Laughter]\u00a0 You know what I\u2019m saying?\u00a0 He also happened to be handsome\u2014off the page, and she was beautiful\u2014off the page; and they got attracted.\u00a0 Both were Christians, and they were attracted to each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, ha ha\u2014the season would end.\u00a0 He would do what he had always done.\u00a0 He said, \"Honey, we're heading to the woods.\"\u00a0 \"I don't think I will.\"\u00a0 \"Well, I am!\"\u00a0 Well, I got a phone call.\u00a0 It got so problematic that she did the last thing that a woman will do, sometimes, to get her husband's attention\u2014she fired the flare.\u00a0 She said, \"I'm out of here.\"\u00a0 I don't think she meant to do it, but that's the only way she could get this kid\u2014that all of his life, he had done what pleased him.\u00a0 Well, all of a sudden, your marriage is a wake-up call.\u00a0 You have to do\u20141 Corinthians 7\u2014\"what pleases your mate.\"\u00a0 So, there has to be a social or some sort of compatibility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber 5:\u00a0 There needs to be legitimate passion.\u00a0 It had better be there.\u00a0 I am a believer in this.\u00a0 A lot of guys aren't, but I am.\u00a0 When I say to a couple:\u00a0 \u201cDo you love the Lord?\u201d \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cAre you walking with God?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cOh, yes.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cAre y\u2019all heading to do great things?\u201d \u201cYes.\u201d \"Tell me about your physical purity.\u00a0 Are y\u2019all staying pure?\"\u00a0 That guy says to me, \"Well, we have no real temptation.\"\u00a0 I say, \"We've got a problem.\"\u00a0 [Audience Laughter]\u00a0 You don't just marry your best friend.\u00a0 You have to long for things that only are done with your mate.\u00a0 There is an intimacy, a passion, an excitement that has to be there.\u00a0 Maybe you can turn on the switch at the altar.\u00a0 I doubt it.\u00a0 There had better be some sort of passion because where there isn't, that gets really old really quick.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, the marriage bed is the follow-through on all of the spiritual, emotional, social love that you have.\u00a0 All of the delight that you feel in that woman\u2014 that has given herself and loved you\u2014the delight of it is shown in a physical expression in the marital bed.\u00a0 When a woman has such appreciation for that man\u2014who goes out in that pit, and works and struggles\u2014the follow-through is in the marital bed.\u00a0 When that isn't there, there is a problem.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn The Song of Solomon, they're not married until Chapter 4.\u00a0 There are things said in Chapter 2 and in Chapter 3, by the single woman\u2014that are exciting, indeed.\u00a0 She longs for him.\u00a0 That has to be there.\u00a0 Incidentally, let me throw a little note in here\u2014when these things aren't there\u2014when you have a couple that is getting married simply on shallow reasons and the impulse of just longing to be\u2014this primitive desire that, \u201cWe have to be married,\u201d you're going to start running into problems in communication\u2014problems in keeping the excitement going.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat happens, a lot of times, is a couple will go to this kind of panacea.\u00a0 There's a salve that you can rub on a problem relationship.\u00a0 It will give it immediate relief for about a 24-hour period.\u00a0 It's called premarital sex.\u00a0 In the midst of premarital sex, the worst of couples feels like it's a great relationship.\u00a0 That's one of the great problems with premarital sex.\u00a0 It's not just that it is sin, but it creates a deception.\u00a0 It retards the real development of the deeper things.\u00a0 The reason that a couple falls into premarital sex:\u00a0 A lot of times, it is just the pure novelty of eroticism.\u00a0 On a scale of sexuality\u2014on a 1 to 10\u2014that's about a 12, and you can't maintain that in marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you get married, it's not going to be this explosive kind of thing that takes off.\u00a0 Oh, every once in a while, things happen; but generally, it's going to be the expression of character.\u00a0 It's going to come out of this fountain of character.\u00a0\u00a0 Now, when you get into premarital sex, you just go around the character.\u00a0 What happens, though, when you get into marriage\u2014is that premarital stuff doesn't happen like it used to.\u00a0 You end up just busting it up.\u00a0 Tony Evans says, \u201cWhat was a great deal becomes an ordeal, goes to a new deal; and you just try a new mate, and get out of it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if I was just an atheist, just on the counseling that I\u2019ve done, I would say, \u201cBeware of premarital sex.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ll go so far as to saying, \u201cSome of the bad marriages that I have seen, I can ask the question, \u2018Did you all fall into premarital sex?\u2019\u00a0 Usually, the answer is, \u2018Yes.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 And I tell them, \u201cYour relationship probably wouldn\u2019t have endured to the altar if you hadn\u2019t had premarital sex.\u00a0 You just kind of kept spraying lighter fluid on this thing, but the real coals and embers weren\u2019t there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to share one other thing here.\u00a0 The phenomena of a premarital relationship\u2014there\u2019s a lot of confusion and a lot of talk, right now, on dating.\u00a0 Let me give you my opinion, which is equally authoritative and true on this, just from my observations.\u00a0 [Audience laughter]\u00a0 If you want to write it down, don\u2019t write it down\u2014just listen.\u00a0 Let me give you, like Paul says, \u201cOne who by the grace of God is trustworthy,\u201d\u2014that has seen this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA date is a time of enjoyment and of pure recreation of people of the opposite sex at a common event.\u00a0 That's all that a date is.\u00a0 It's responsible people enjoying a common event.\u00a0 There's no escalation, there is no continuation, there are no expectations that you put on it.\u00a0 Everybody kind of \u201cdogs\u201d dating.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be honest with you\u2014if it came down to me hanging out with Michael Anadero, I\u2019d rather hang out with Sally.\u00a0 You know what I\u2019m saying?\u00a0 I just really enjoyed the presence of just neat girls, and just the opposite way of men and women.\u00a0 That\u2019s no problem; okay? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhenever that noun\u2014a \"date\"\u2014becomes a process\u2014\"dating\"\u2014you're continually seeing the same person over, and over, and over\u2014when that happens, escalation, expectations, and temptation <em>are<\/em> going to happen.\u00a0 That's a fact, and that's okay for the heat to build.\u00a0 But when you start seeing the same person, over and over, what you\u2019re getting into is preparation for courtship.\u00a0 The problem we have, in our culture, is we don\u2019t have a fearfulness of <em>dating<\/em>.\u00a0 Call it what you want\u2014going steady\u2014when the same people keep seeing each other, it\u2019s going to escalate.\u00a0 There are going to be expectations.\u00a0 There are going to be temptations.\u00a0 That\u2019s okay <em>if<\/em> you have a man and a woman that are theologically, morally, philosophically solid.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf that man, financially, can take on where that dating is going to go into courtship, is going to go into marriage\u2014if that man is in place\u2014if you have two people who are solid, who are sound\u2014that process that leads into courtship, that goes to the altar\u2014that's okay.\u00a0 But if you don't\u2014if you're not there socially, you're going to have to put off that wedding for years, and years, and years.\u00a0 That becomes a frustration and a temptation.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd if you're not there spiritually, then there are temptations that will come by that continual kind of relationship.\u00a0 Immature people in the continual same social context are\u2014I mean, it is striking matches, knee-deep in kerosene.\u00a0 So, dating is a thing all of you are going to do with the same person; but it demands a great deal of trepidation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0That is Tommy Nelson, the pastor at Denton Bible Church in Denton, Texas.\u00a0 Not long ago, he spoke to students at Cedarville University about what to look for and what to be if you want to be a married person someday.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI'll tell you, there had to be a wake-up call in that chapel that day for a lot of those college students who kind of thought, \"Okay, maybe I've been approaching this thing a little too casually.\u00a0 Maybe, I need to approach it with a little more earnest\u2014not only who I'm looking for, but who I am\u2014whether I'm the right kind of person to even be looking in the first place.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, I think that's extremely important.\u00a0 When a single person is in the process of becoming God's man and God's woman, and they do have what Tommy was talking about\u2014that edge to their lives\u2014an edge in the sense of growth, an edge in the sense of mission in what they're about as an individual\u2014it's so much easier to balance that tandem bicycle when it's moving, and it's moving in a direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSpiritually-speaking, I think what God wants from all of us is\u2014He wants us moving toward Him and moving in the direction of what His mission is for our lives.\u00a0 Single people really need to be a part of the Great Commission.\u00a0 In the process, as they find other people who are going with them in the same direction, that's when you meet your spouse.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat's how Barbara and I met.\u00a0 We were in the process of investing our lives in college-age students and high school students.\u00a0 In the process, came together.\u00a0 We didn't have to talk about our direction.\u00a0 We both had that direction.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSingle people, however, who aren't involved in going somewhere, sit back on a hammock.\u00a0 They begin to panic, and they begin to try to force relationships, and they fret.\u00a0 Instead of becoming the right person, they're looking for the right person.\u00a0 What singles today need to do is not panic; but they need to believe in God, and trust Him, and get on with life\u2014get on with being God's man, God's woman, and who He created you to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That's back to what Tommy said in this message.\u00a0 I love this quote from him:\u00a0 \"If you're single and you want to know who to marry, run as hard and as fast toward Jesus as you can.\u00a0 If, out of the corner of your eye, you see somebody running in the same direction, take a second look.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go.\u00a0 That's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That's the kind of advice singles need to hear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then, you may lock arms together and run in the same direction toward Christ.\u00a0 I have no idea what that decision to follow Christ has saved Barbara and me from, as we've run toward the Savior; but as I look around, in the culture, I see a lot of people who are bored, a lot of people who are running off to have an affair, a lot of people who are married to their jobs.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI'm telling you, Bob, this is a difficult culture to have what Tommy Nelson was talking about\u2014a successful marriage.\u00a0 I think that's why the spiritual dimension of life has to be at the very core of who we are and what we're about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0I talked to a friend of mine, just the other day.\u00a0 His daughter is just recently married.\u00a0 Two months into the marriage, she and her husband are experiencing financial difficulties.\u00a0 She just found out that one of the reasons for that is because some of their money is going to pay for internet pornography.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think to myself, \u201cI wish she could have heard Tommy's message, yesterday and today, when he talked about moral compatibility, theological compatibility, and ministry compatibility.\u201d\u00a0 You don't think about those things when you're head-over-heels in love with some smooth-talking guy or some real good-looking young lady.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0Yet, you've got to pull back and think about those kinds of things or you'll wind up like my friend's daughter, two months into her marriage, and full of heartache, and a loss of hope, wondering:\u00a0 \"How do we fix this?\u201d and, \u201cDid I just make the biggest mistake of my life?\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, you've hit on something there that a single person can't begin to appreciate unless they experience it.\u00a0 That's why they need to take our word for it here.\u00a0 You want to be in the process of becoming God's man and God's woman\u2014totally sold out to Jesus Christ\u2014not having to battle over the issue of whose you are.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you Jesus Christ's bond slave?\u00a0 Is He your Master?\u00a0 Have you written over the title deed of your life to Him?\u00a0 Once those issues have been settled, I'm telling you, the other issues that come your way are going to be much easier to deal with if you settle the issue of who is going to be your Lord and your Master.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And if you\u2019re going with somebody right now, or you\u2019re engaged to somebody right now, and they don\u2019t show that kind of spiritual vitality\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Be careful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Beware.\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you, you could be walking off into quicksand.\u00a0 There are people who get a form of religion for a period of time\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right\u2014right before the wedding.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you\u2014on that, too.\u00a0 You and I have both seen couples who have been pulled, and lured, and sucked into relationships.\u00a0 Truthfully, they\u2019ve been manipulated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 At the <em>Weekend to Remember <\/em>marriage getaways that we do\u2014on Saturday, we have a couple of breakout sessions with the engaged couples\u2014we give them a process to go through\u2014a checklist to look at as they consider, \u201cAm I making the right decision by committing myself to this person for a lifetime?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019ve seen some couples walk out of that session and go:\u00a0 \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 We don\u2019t think that this is the right direction for us.\u201d\u00a0 Or maybe it\u2019s been one of the two that\u2019s made that decision.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we\u2019ve said many times, we would rather have those people make a hard decision, at that moment in time, than to go ahead, and get married, and find themselves, later on, going:\u00a0 \u201cDid I make a foolish choice?\u00a0 Did I walk into something that, if I had been paying more attention, I would have waited a little bit?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe <em>Weekend to Remember <\/em>is designed to be a fun and a romantic, relaxing getaway for married couples to get a deeper understanding of God\u2019s design and purpose for marriage.
