Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 You know, we have a lot of women who listen to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019m just wondering if you think that today they should just go ahead and turn over to the soft rock station\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, no, no, no, no.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014or the country\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re going to find out a lot as they relate to their husbands, maybe their boyfriends, maybe as they raise their sons and daughters.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You think they are going to be curious about all this men-stuff we\u2019re going to be talking about here?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, you\u2019ve seen it with the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video series.\u00a0 When we\u2019ve shown that to groups of men and women\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the women go, \u201c<em>That<\/em> is really good stuff!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 The guys grunt, but the women\u2014the women are all over it!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They get pretty excited about it.\u00a0 You\u2019re right.\u00a0 Good point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And they\u2019re going to like our guest on today\u2019s broadcast.\u00a0 Kenny Luck joins us from Saddleback\u2014all the way from Southern California.\u00a0 Welcome to Arkansas, Kenny.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you, Dennis and Bob.\u00a0 It\u2019s great to be here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kenny is the Men\u2019s Pastor of Saddleback.\u00a0 He is the President and Founder of <em>Every Man Ministries<\/em>.\u00a0 He\u2019s written more than 20 books, including a new one called <em>Sleeping Giant<\/em>.\u00a0 He and his wife Chrissy met at UCLA.\u00a0 They have three children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou talk about, in your book, the men\u2019s movement.\u00a0 You say, in the church, there is an 800-pound gorilla.\u00a0 What is the gorilla?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a \u201chim\u201d; not a \u201cher\u201d.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did I say it was her?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no, it\u2019s him.\u00a0 We want to endear ourselves to the female listeners.\u00a0 It\u2019s definitely \u201ca him\u201d.\u00a0 We have the women and the children.\u00a0 That\u2019s what all the statistical research shows us; but the highest flight demographic, in least-utilized asset, Dennis, is the men.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I talk with pastors about men who are affiliated versus men who are activated\u2014when you study all of the categories of involvement in the local church\u2014Bible study, evangelism, service, ministry, volunteerism, et cetera\u2014it\u2019s dominated by the women, three-to-one.\u00a0 I look at the New Testament and I see Jesus not having a big problem recruiting men.\u00a0 I look at the book of Acts\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But He was Jesus, Kenny!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was Jesus; but even those guys, who were intoxicated by the Spirit in Acts, Chapter 2, they did not have a problem recruiting men.\u00a0 So, we have half the body\u2014on the female side\u2014highly- and heavily-involved.\u00a0 We have the church\u2014that\u2019s languishing to get Kingdom initiatives done in communities\u2014and we are, as I would put it, dealing our aces to the devil by not having a strong vision-investment and pathway for a man to be great and do great things in the local church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the 800-pound gorilla is the guy; and he\u2019s asleep in the church?\u00a0 Is that what you are saying?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, he\u2019s\u2014it\u2019s the issue.\u00a0 The 800-pound gorilla is the issue of men and their involvement in the church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Men engaged in a mission\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Correct.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that\u2019s really what you are all about.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to rewind the tapes and go all the way back to when you were a boy.\u00a0 Where did you get this passion for calling men\u2014pardon the phrase\u2014to step up?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Our listeners have heard that phrase a few times here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s interesting when you say, \u201cStep up\u201d.\u00a0 There is a book by Kay Hymowitz right now.\u00a0 It\u2019s called <em>Manning Up<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s talking about the extended adolescence of men.\u00a0 When you asked the question, \u201cWhere did you get the passion?\u201d \u2014it comes out of pain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of passion comes out of pain\u2014pain of fatherlessness; the pain of not having a relationship with my own dad; the systemic emotional and relational difficulties I had growing up, as a young man; and then, being parented by peer culture and culture-at-large, in terms of, \u201cWhat identity was I going to place my masculinity into?\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have a model.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have a mentor.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have someone messaging me on what healthy masculinity was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you chase the cultural vision and version of masculinity, you end up, inevitably, hurting yourself \u2014hurting people around you\u2014because it\u2019s very self-oriented.\u00a0 You self-protect, you self-indulge, you self-gratify, you self-preserve.\u00a0 You want to become self-important\u2014all those values and culture that are attached to being great as a man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHaving experienced the loss, frustration, and emptiness of what I would call a broken quest for sonship in the world, you hit a cul-de-sac, as a man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re going to have to explain what you mean by a \u201cbroken quest for sonship\u201d.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 When I talk about not having a relationship with my dad and the validation that goes with it, you go and chase validation.\u00a0 You want that affirmation, and acceptance, and approval.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t get it from a father, you go get it from some other man, or group of men, or from culture-at-large.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way God made us.\u00a0 That\u2019s what God modeled in Matthew, Chapter 3, when Jesus was baptized.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, every man is looking for someone to say, \u201cThis is my beloved son\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cin whom I\u2019m well pleased.\u201d\u00a0 If it\u2019s not your dad doing it, you\u2019ll go find somebody else who will.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that\u2019s what\u2014well, you know\u2014 what God models for us\u2014is meant for us.\u00a0 I think every man\u2014 young and old\u2014wants a special moment, a special blessing, a special name\u2014\u201cSon,\u201d and a special love\u2014love that comes from a father.\u00a0 \u201dGuys,\u201d I say to men all the time, \u201cyou can never appropriately love a woman until you\u2019ve been loved appropriately by another man.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think younger guys today are looking for an older man\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014who\u2019s continuing to approve of them, saying, \u201cI\u2019m proud of you\u201d\u2014not as a son\u2014but just as an older man to a younger man to say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m tracking with you.\u00a0 I\u2019m following you, and I want you to know I\u2019m proud of you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wrote a note this morning to a young man in\u2014you know who\u2019s hammering out life.\u00a0 He\u2019s facing some tough stuff.\u00a0 And I wrote a note.\u00a0 I just thought, as I was doing that, \u201cYou know, those kinds of messages breathe life into the soul of a man,\u201d because there are not that many men in our lives who truly do believe in us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s\u2014perfect illustration is the last conference I did in Birmingham.\u00a0 There were 1,200 guys there.\u00a0 After I walked out, I was up until one o\u2019clock in the morning with thirty 20- to 30-year-olds who, essentially, wanted me to be there dad.\u00a0 I wish I could just pack them all on the plane, and we could do life, and I could walk alongside of them; but they were looking for a daddy-mentor-type person who could speak into the struggles that they were facing and not solving, at a peer level.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey wanted to be with someone who was around the corner\u2014someone who would walk with them.\u00a0 So, I see what you\u2019re describing every time I go and speak.\u00a0 I get tons of emails from younger men who just have had, again, no modeling or mentoring.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me go back because you said that, in the church, \u201cthree-to-one\u201d women are active, and engaged, and passionate.\u00a0 People have said, \u201cWell, the problem is the church is not masculine enough.\u201d\u00a0 Is that right?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would say that the perception is much more powerful that it\u2019s feminine in the sense that, when a man looks at the church\u2014if there is no vision for him\u2014because men come into church, and they\u2019re asking themselves questions they don\u2019t verbalize.\u00a0 They ask, in their minds, \u201cHow do I fit here?\u00a0 Can I do something great?\u00a0 Is there value to me?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 If they see all the value, and money, and investment going toward women\u2019s ministry\u2014children\u2019s ministry, schools, weekend services\u2014and they don\u2019t really feel like they can be a stakeholder in the big-thing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cYou can go do the parking lot ministry\u2014no knock on guys who do the parking lot ministry because there are probably a few listening.\u00a0 However, if you have a guy and you say, \u201cHey, you can greet people, usher, and do the parking lot ministry,\u201d \u2014for him\u2014the way God made him\u2014that\u2019s not resonating.\u00a0 We orphan them in the absence of a strong vision and pathway of involvement, to the world, to be great.\u00a0 That\u2019s why you have millions affiliated, but not activated, because they don\u2019t sense or feel like they are valued.\u00a0 They know that they are valued by how a church is investing in programs for them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve spent some time, here at FamilyLife, talking to our team because we are all over this with you.\u00a0 I mean, I believe today men need to be challenged with a vision and a mission to make a difference in their world.\u00a0 The reason we\u2019re losing them is we\u2019re not giving them a big enough challenge.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe challenged men and women, as couples, to step up and to host the <em>Art of Marriage<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> in their communities, in their church, in their business, in their lake house.\u00a0 Now, some 24 months later, we\u2019ve had over 300,000 people\u2014more than 10,000 events\u2014all hosted by laymen and women\u2014but men who stepped up and said, \u201cYes, Sweetie, I\u2019ll do this with you.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what led us, ultimately, to put together a new video series called <em>Stepping Up<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob was the Executive Producer of that\u2014Grand Poobah.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure all of the titles he had, but he\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 I saw it.\u00a0 It\u2019s excellent.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He put it together, but the design of this is not to be put in the hands of a pastor\u2014not that I\u2019m against that\u2014but to put in the hands of a layman, whose pastor says, \u201c<em>Sic \u2018em!<\/em>\u00a0 Go get them!\u00a0 Go reach your community.\u00a0 Go reach the people in your neighborhood, your business world, and reach out and make a difference for Jesus Christ,\u201d because men are struggling to be men in every segment of society today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re advocating the same kind of thing\u2014that it needs to be that impassioned volunteer who is giving leadership to a lot of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hey, listen.\u00a0 <em>Marvel Comics<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> knows men better than most pastors.\u00a0 They know that men want to deliver justice, they want to stick it to the bad guy, they want special power, and they want to defend the weak and vulnerable.\u00a0 Why do you have a multi-billion dollar series about a good man rising when others are suffering?\u00a0 You have it because that\u2019s the way God made us.\u00a0 <br><br>He made us to step into that roll.\u00a0 When you look at Jesus, this is Jesus, the Man of Justice.\u00a0 The culture that Jesus walked into, from a male perspective, the culture was broken.\u00a0 You had men believing sincerely, \u201cThank God I\u2019m not a woman, a kid, or a Gentile.\u201d\u00a0 It was this toxic mix of nationalism and chauvinism\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and ethnocentrism.\u00a0 Here comes Jesus, the Man of Justice, defending women, saying, \u201cLet the children come,\u201d and telling parables about the Good Samaritan.\u00a0 So, it is the ethos of the man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Dennis, I totally agree with you.\u00a0 Any pastor who truly wants to help himself should have the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> event on Super Saturday because, when you activate men into a solid vision of purpose and cause\u2014they are dying and desperate for that.\u00a0 So, whether it\u2019s the layman, whether it\u2019s the men in a couples\u2019 group that are kind of languishing, or whether it\u2019s just a group of guys who get together and recreate\u2014I think <em>Stepping Up<\/em> is going to be a part of the catalyst of waking the sleeping giant in our country.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And what you\u2019re doing is trying to provide an ongoing system\u2014a way, that once men are touched, there is an ongoing discipleship, mentoring\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014process for them that doesn\u2019t just happen over ten weeks and, then, it\u2019s over.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it\u2019s church-centric.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That, to me, is very important because it just can\u2019t be just men\u2019s groups.\u00a0 Ultimately, there has to be a place called the local church where men are real, authentic, and are tied to accountability, to worship, to growth, and to ongoing discipleship.\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 They are connecting somewhere!\u00a0 They are connecting to go ride motorbikes.\u00a0 They are connecting to go chase the white ball.\u00a0 They are connecting around sports franchises.\u00a0 They are connecting.\u00a0 They are finding a form of fellowship, but not the depth and meaning that is absent from the other forms of fellowship\u2014doesn\u2019t go to purpose and meaning, as a man.\u00a0 So, yes, the backend is so important.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think one of the big lessons of the men\u2019s movement, over the last 30 years, is that we\u2019ve had a lot of inspiration but not a lot of progression.\u00a0 Inspiration and activation creates frustration, when there is no progression.\u00a0 I know that\u2019s a lot of rhyme; but it\u2019s so true, on the grassroots levels.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that\u2019s where what we\u2019re doing\u2014what <em>Sleeping Giant<\/em> is doing\u2014what <em>Every Man Ministries<\/em> is doing\u2014in terms of providing clarity of process\u2014\u201cHey, it doesn\u2019t stop here.\u00a0 This meeting will reconvene.\u00a0 It\u2019ll meet at a <em>Sleeping Giant<\/em> mid-sized meeting.\u00a0 Then, you\u2019ll hear vision to be great and do great things\u2014getting in, getting healthy, getting strong, and getting going into God\u2019s purposes for which you were created.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is what every man wants to hear\u2014needs to hear.\u00a0 However, they are not hearing that.\u00a0 And that\u2019s where we have a new wave of ministries\u2014that are aligning, I think\u2014it\u2019s going to be one of the best, within the Church, moving out things\u2014we have seen in a long time.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would you unpack what\u2014you kind of ran through \u201cgetting in, getting healthy\u201d\u2014you\u2019ve got kind of a path that you think guys need to be on.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It was out of a need to help my guys at Saddleback communicate to their friends\u2014Christian and non-Christian\u2014 \u201cWhat is this about?\u00a0 What is this men\u2019s culture about?\u201d \u2014and give them a vernacular that wasn\u2019t worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and mission\u2014if you have absolutely no connection to those concepts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because all men know and sense the need to have a team.\u00a0 They need to \u201cget in\u201d; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 They know they have to have core health.\u00a0 There are billion-dollar magazines that talk about physical health; but then, you have relational, marital, familial health\u2014which are the true touch points where they need the most help.\u00a0 That\u2019s, \u201cget healthy\u201d.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But their spiritual health in that, too; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s exactly\u2014that\u2019s the point\u2014is that it\u2019s not just healthy relationships for the sake of healthy relationships.\u00a0 It\u2019s:\u00a0 \u201cYou need to be healthy spiritually.\u00a0 And guess what?\u00a0 When you get healthy, spiritually, you get healthy, maritally.\u00a0 When you get healthy, spiritually, you get healthy, familial-ly.\u00a0 When you get healthy, spiritually, you get healthy emotionally.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, \u201cget in\u201d and \u201cget healthy\u201d.\u00a0 There\u2019s enough pain that men want to defeat in their own lives that provide plenty of ammunition and success from men\u2019s ministries if\u2014like the parable of the Good Samaritan\u2014instead of being a church that walks on the other side of the street and says, \u201cHey!\u201d you know, or casts the idea that, \u201cYou have to clean yourself up before you can get over here,\u201d \u2014you go meet people or men who are like icebergs.\u00a0 Underneath the tip of their image, there is huge suffering.\u00a0 I assume nine out of ten\u2014when I\u2019m in front of men.\u00a0 There is an issue that they want to win at.\u00a0 You start talking and providing opportunities for them to deal with that\u2014they will come in droves!\u00a0 That\u2019s what we discovered at Saddleback.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we changed our paradigm to \u201cGet in, Get Healthy.\u201d\u00a0 Then, that transformation that happens is they\u2019re getting healthy in God, in their relationships, and their families.\u00a0 It\u2019s like creating a bank account that, then, you can spend on vision\u2014like, \u201cHey, I\u2019m so glad you\u2019re doing well.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad that you\u2019re happy that we\u2019re providing this for you.\u00a0 This is where this is going.\u00a0 Okay, we\u2019d love for you to get strong and become a solid disciple of Jesus Christ and join us in leadership, community, and service.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why we built that model\u2014the backend\u2014because we\u2019ve had, for 30 years, a lot of good catalytic experience and emotion; but what we need is clarity and intentionality in the process.\u00a0 Men love that.\u00a0 They love clarity.\u00a0 They\u2019re asking\u2014even though they are not verbalizing\u2014\u201cNow, that you\u2019ve got me.\u00a0 Where are you taking me?\u00a0 Where is this going?\u00a0 How am I going to end up fitting?\u201d\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have an answer for that, then, you lose them; but if you have a clear pathway for them\u2014when they get initially involved and you keep seeding that\u2014\u201cHey, here\u2019s where you are.\u00a0 Here\u2019s where we\u2019d love you to be, and here\u2019s what it involves.\u201d\u00a0 They really matriculate through the process.\u00a0 That\u2019s what changed our church.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s what the church is supposed to be about.\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s why I\u2019m excited about Super Saturday because we have gone to churches and said to churches, \u201cWould you put together a group of men who gather before the Super Bowl on Saturday\u2014before the Super Bowl?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, they can kind of thump their chests and have some rally cries; but at the core\u2014hear biblical messages on courageous manhood of a true follower of Jesus Christ and how you can begin to deal with some of the demons\u2014some of the stuff, as you\u2019ve said, Kenny, below the surface\u2014from the tip of the iceberg\u2014those core issues that are just knocking the daylights out of guys.\u00a0 They can\u2019t get beyond and how to begin to fellowship with other guys\u2014get authentic; get real.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, not just have an event, but begin to launch something, from that point, that begins to be a self-sustaining movement of men, led by men in the church, going forward.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 That sounds awesome!\u00a0 Let\u2019s do it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s do it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s do it!\u00a0 No, you\u2014you know what I was thinking about <em>Stepping Up<\/em> and watching the content?\u00a0 It\u2019s so beautifully done.\u00a0 It resonated with me so deeply, and I see a lot of stuff.\u00a0 This is such high-quality\u2014resonating content\u2014but you know what I was thinking, in the context of Super Saturday\u2014it\u2019s sort of like being in the red zone.\u00a0 You can move the ball in the middle of the field without issue.\u00a0 Most teams can move the ball; but when they get into that red zone, the field shrinks.\u00a0 It\u2019s like a fist fight in a phone booth.\u00a0 It is so hard to push it across.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s so appropriate to have Super Saturday because there are millions of men who are bogged down in the red zones of life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and family\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, they are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and marriage.\u00a0 They move the ball, and they score consistently in other realms; but in their relationship with God\u2014 their relationship with their wife, how they\u2019re leading their family, their personal character\u2014 they are bogged down in the red zone.\u00a0 No man likes to see the guy with the soccer cleats come on every time and kick field goals.\u00a0 You\u2019re not going to Super Bowl.\u00a0 I was sitting there listening to <em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u2014the curriculum\u2014and I went, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Red zone versus end zone\u2014he wants to be in the end zone.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cHe wants to go from frustration to celebration.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what FamilyLife is offering all churches and men\u2019s President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Kenny Luck believes that if the church is going to be the church and the Kingdom of God is going to be advanced, then, men have to be called to step up and be men.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about that today.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 You know, we have a lot of women who listen to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019m just wondering if you think that today they should just go ahead and turn over to the soft rock station\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, no, no, no, no.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014or the country\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re going to find out a lot as they relate to their husbands, maybe their boyfriends, maybe as they raise their sons and daughters.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You think they are going to be curious about all this men-stuff we\u2019re going to be talking about here?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, you\u2019ve seen it with the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video series.\u00a0 When we\u2019ve shown that to groups of men and women\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the women go, \u201c<em>That<\/em> is really good stuff!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 The guys grunt, but the women\u2014the women are all over it!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They get pretty excited about it.\u00a0 You\u2019re right.\u00a0 Good point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And they\u2019re going to like our guest on today\u2019s broadcast.\u00a0 Kenny Luck joins us from Saddleback\u2014all the way from Southern California.\u00a0 Welcome to Arkansas, Kenny.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you, Dennis and Bob.\u00a0 It\u2019s great to be here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kenny is the Men\u2019s Pastor of Saddleback.\u00a0 He is the President and Founder of <em>Every Man Ministries<\/em>.\u00a0 He\u2019s written more than 20 books, including a new one called <em>Sleeping Giant<\/em>.\u00a0 He and his wife Chrissy met at UCLA.\u00a0 They have three children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou talk about, in your book, the men\u2019s movement.\u00a0 You say, in the church, there is an 800-pound gorilla.\u00a0 What is the gorilla?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a \u201chim\u201d; not a \u201cher\u201d.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did I say it was her?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no, it\u2019s him.\u00a0 We want to endear ourselves to the female listeners.\u00a0 It\u2019s definitely \u201ca him\u201d.\u00a0 We have the women and the children.\u00a0 That\u2019s what all the statistical research shows us; but the highest flight demographic, in least-utilized asset, Dennis, is the men.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I talk with pastors about men who are affiliated versus men who are activated\u2014when you study all of the categories of involvement in the local church\u2014Bible study, evangelism, service, ministry, volunteerism, et cetera\u2014it\u2019s dominated by the women, three-to-one.\u00a0 I look at the New Testament and I see Jesus not having a big problem recruiting men.\u00a0 I look at the book of Acts\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But He was Jesus, Kenny!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was Jesus; but even those guys, who were intoxicated by the Spirit in Acts, Chapter 2, they did not have a problem recruiting men.\u00a0 So, we have half the body\u2014on the female side\u2014highly- and heavily-involved.\u00a0 We have the church\u2014that\u2019s languishing to get Kingdom initiatives done in communities\u2014and we are, as I would put it, dealing our aces to the devil by not having a strong vision-investment and pathway for a man to be great and do great things in the local church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the 800-pound gorilla is the guy; and he\u2019s asleep in the church?\u00a0 Is that what you are saying?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, he\u2019s\u2014it\u2019s the issue.\u00a0 The 800-pound gorilla is the issue of men and their involvement in the church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Men engaged in a mission\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Correct.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that\u2019s really what you are all about.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to rewind the tapes and go all the way back to when you were a boy.\u00a0 Where did you get this passion for calling men\u2014pardon the phrase\u2014to step up?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Our listeners have heard that phrase a few times here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s interesting when you say, \u201cStep up\u201d.\u00a0 There is a book by Kay Hymowitz right now.\u00a0 It\u2019s called <em>Manning Up<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s talking about the extended adolescence of men.\u00a0 When you asked the question, \u201cWhere did you get the passion?\u201d \u2014it comes out of pain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of passion comes out of pain\u2014pain of fatherlessness; the pain of not having a relationship with my own dad; the systemic emotional and relational difficulties I had growing up, as a young man; and then, being parented by peer culture and culture-at-large, in terms of, \u201cWhat identity was I going to place my masculinity into?\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have a model.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have a mentor.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have someone messaging me on what healthy masculinity was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you chase the cultural vision and version of masculinity, you end up, inevitably, hurting yourself \u2014hurting people around you\u2014because it\u2019s very self-oriented.\u00a0 You self-protect, you self-indulge, you self-gratify, you self-preserve.\u00a0 You want to become self-important\u2014all those values and culture that are attached to being great as a man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHaving experienced the loss, frustration, and emptiness of what I would call a broken quest for sonship in the world, you hit a cul-de-sac, as a man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re going to have to explain what you mean by a \u201cbroken quest for sonship\u201d.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 When I talk about not having a relationship with my dad and the validation that goes with it, you go and chase validation.\u00a0 You want that affirmation, and acceptance, and approval.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t get it from a father, you go get it from some other man, or group of men, or from culture-at-large.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way God made us.\u00a0 That\u2019s what God modeled in Matthew, Chapter 3, when Jesus was baptized.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, every man is looking for someone to say, \u201cThis is my beloved son\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cin whom I\u2019m well pleased.\u201d\u00a0 If it\u2019s not your dad doing it, you\u2019ll go find somebody else who will.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that\u2019s what\u2014well, you know\u2014 what God models for us\u2014is meant for us.\u00a0 I think every man\u2014 young and old\u2014wants a special moment, a special blessing, a special name\u2014\u201cSon,\u201d and a special love\u2014love that comes from a father.\u00a0 \u201dGuys,\u201d I say to men all the time, \u201cyou can never appropriately love a woman until you\u2019ve been loved appropriately by another man.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think younger guys today are looking for an older man\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014who\u2019s continuing to approve of them, saying, \u201cI\u2019m proud of you\u201d\u2014not as a son\u2014but just as an older man to a younger man to say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m tracking with you.\u00a0 I\u2019m following you, and I want you to know I\u2019m proud of you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wrote a note this morning to a young man in\u2014you know who\u2019s hammering out life.\u00a0 He\u2019s facing some tough stuff.\u00a0 And I wrote a note.\u00a0 I just thought, as I was doing that, \u201cYou know, those kinds of messages breathe life into the soul of a man,\u201d because there are not that many men in our lives who truly do believe in us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s\u2014perfect illustration is the last conference I did in Birmingham.\u00a0 There were 1,200 guys there.\u00a0 After I walked out, I was up until one o\u2019clock in the morning with thirty 20- to 30-year-olds who, essentially, wanted me to be there dad.\u00a0 I wish I could just pack them all on the plane, and we could do life, and I could walk alongside of them; but they were looking for a daddy-mentor-type person who could speak into the struggles that they were facing and not solving, at a peer level.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey wanted to be with someone who was around the corner\u2014someone who would walk with them.\u00a0 So, I see what you\u2019re describing every time I go and speak.\u00a0 I get tons of emails from younger men who just have had, again, no modeling or mentoring.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me go back because you said that, in the church, \u201cthree-to-one\u201d women are active, and engaged, and passionate.\u00a0 People have said, \u201cWell, the problem is the church is not masculine enough.\u201d\u00a0 Is that right?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would say that the perception is much more powerful that it\u2019s feminine in the sense that, when a man looks at the church\u2014if there is no vision for him\u2014because men come into church, and they\u2019re asking themselves questions they don\u2019t verbalize.\u00a0 They ask, in their minds, \u201cHow do I fit here?\u00a0 Can I do something great?\u00a0 Is there value to me?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 If they see all the value, and money, and investment going toward women\u2019s ministry\u2014children\u2019s ministry, schools, weekend services\u2014and they don\u2019t really feel like they can be a stakeholder in the big-thing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cYou can go do the parking lot ministry\u2014no knock on guys who do the parking lot ministry because there are probably a few listening.\u00a0 However, if you have a guy and you say, \u201cHey, you can greet people, usher, and do the parking lot ministry,\u201d \u2014for him\u2014the way God made him\u2014that\u2019s not resonating.\u00a0 We orphan them in the absence of a strong vision and pathway of involvement, to the world, to be great.\u00a0 That\u2019s why you have millions affiliated, but not activated, because they don\u2019t sense or feel like they are valued.\u00a0 They know that they are valued by how a church is investing in programs for them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve spent some time, here at FamilyLife, talking to our team because we are all over this with you.\u00a0 I mean, I believe today men need to be challenged with a vision and a mission to make a difference in their world.\u00a0 The reason we\u2019re losing them is we\u2019re not giving them a big enough challenge.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe challenged men and women, as couples, to step up and to host the <em>Art of Marriage<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> in their communities, in their church, in their business, in their lake house.\u00a0 Now, some 24 months later, we\u2019ve had over 300,000 people\u2014more than 10,000 events\u2014all hosted by laymen and women\u2014but men who stepped up and said, \u201cYes, Sweetie, I\u2019ll do this with you.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what led us, ultimately, to put together a new video series called <em>Stepping Up<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob was the Executive Producer of that\u2014Grand Poobah.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure all of the titles he had, but he\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 I saw it.\u00a0 It\u2019s excellent.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He put it together, but the design of this is not to be put in the hands of a pastor\u2014not that I\u2019m against that\u2014but to put in the hands of a layman, whose pastor says, \u201c<em>Sic \u2018em!<\/em>\u00a0 Go get them!\u00a0 Go reach your community.\u00a0 Go reach the people in your neighborhood, your business world, and reach out and make a difference for Jesus Christ,\u201d because men are struggling to be men in every segment of society today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re advocating the same kind of thing\u2014that it needs to be that impassioned volunteer who is giving leadership to a lot of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hey, listen.\u00a0 <em>Marvel Comics<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> knows men better than most pastors.\u00a0 They know that men want to deliver justice, they want to stick it to the bad guy, they want special power, and they want to defend the weak and vulnerable.\u00a0 Why do you have a multi-billion dollar series about a good man rising when others are suffering?\u00a0 You have it because that\u2019s the way God made us.\u00a0 <br><br>He made us to step into that roll.\u00a0 When you look at Jesus, this is Jesus, the Man of Justice.\u00a0 The culture that Jesus walked into, from a male perspective, the culture was broken.\u00a0 You had men believing sincerely, \u201cThank God I\u2019m not a woman, a kid, or a Gentile.\u201d\u00a0 It was this toxic mix of nationalism and chauvinism\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and ethnocentrism.\u00a0 Here comes Jesus, the Man of Justice, defending women, saying, \u201cLet the children come,\u201d and telling parables about the Good Samaritan.\u00a0 So, it is the ethos of the man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Dennis, I totally agree with you.\u00a0 Any pastor who truly wants to help himself should have the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> event on Super Saturday because, when you activate men into a solid vision of purpose and cause\u2014they are dying and desperate for that.\u00a0 So, whether it\u2019s the layman, whether it\u2019s the men in a couples\u2019 group that are kind of languishing, or whether it\u2019s just a group of guys who get together and recreate\u2014I think <em>Stepping Up<\/em> is going to be a part of the catalyst of waking the sleeping giant in our country.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And what you\u2019re doing is trying to provide an ongoing system\u2014a way, that once men are touched, there is an ongoing discipleship, mentoring\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014process for them that doesn\u2019t just happen over ten weeks and, then, it\u2019s over.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it\u2019s church-centric.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That, to me, is very important because it just can\u2019t be just men\u2019s groups.\u00a0 Ultimately, there has to be a place called the local church where men are real, authentic, and are tied to accountability, to worship, to growth, and to ongoing discipleship.\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 They are connecting somewhere!\u00a0 They are connecting to go ride motorbikes.\u00a0 They are connecting to go chase the white ball.\u00a0 They are connecting around sports franchises.\u00a0 They are connecting.\u00a0 They are finding a form of fellowship, but not the depth and meaning that is absent from the other forms of fellowship\u2014doesn\u2019t go to purpose and meaning, as a man.\u00a0 So, yes, the backend is so important.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think one of the big lessons of the men\u2019s movement, over the last 30 years, is that we\u2019ve had a lot of inspiration but not a lot of progression.\u00a0 Inspiration and activation creates frustration, when there is no progression.\u00a0 I know that\u2019s a lot of rhyme; but it\u2019s so true, on the grassroots levels.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that\u2019s where what we\u2019re doing\u2014what <em>Sleeping Giant<\/em> is doing\u2014what <em>Every Man Ministries<\/em> is doing\u2014in terms of providing clarity of process\u2014\u201cHey, it doesn\u2019t stop here.\u00a0 This meeting will reconvene.\u00a0 It\u2019ll meet at a <em>Sleeping Giant<\/em> mid-sized meeting.\u00a0 Then, you\u2019ll hear vision to be great and do great things\u2014getting in, getting healthy, getting strong, and getting going into God\u2019s purposes for which you were created.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is what every man wants to hear\u2014needs to hear.\u00a0 However, they are not hearing that.\u00a0 And that\u2019s where we have a new wave of ministries\u2014that are aligning, I think\u2014it\u2019s going to be one of the best, within the Church, moving out things\u2014we have seen in a long time.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would you unpack what\u2014you kind of ran through \u201cgetting in, getting healthy\u201d\u2014you\u2019ve got kind of a path that you think guys need to be on.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It was out of a need to help my guys at Saddleback communicate to their friends\u2014Christian and non-Christian\u2014 \u201cWhat is this about?\u00a0 What is this men\u2019s culture about?\u201d \u2014and give them a vernacular that wasn\u2019t worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and mission\u2014if you have absolutely no connection to those concepts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because all men know and sense the need to have a team.\u00a0 They need to \u201cget in\u201d; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 They know they have to have core health.\u00a0 There are billion-dollar magazines that talk about physical health; but then, you have relational, marital, familial health\u2014which are the true touch points where they need the most help.\u00a0 That\u2019s, \u201cget healthy\u201d.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But their spiritual health in that, too; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s exactly\u2014that\u2019s the point\u2014is that it\u2019s not just healthy relationships for the sake of healthy relationships.\u00a0 It\u2019s:\u00a0 \u201cYou need to be healthy spiritually.\u00a0 And guess what?\u00a0 When you get healthy, spiritually, you get healthy, maritally.\u00a0 When you get healthy, spiritually, you get healthy, familial-ly.\u00a0 When you get healthy, spiritually, you get healthy emotionally.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, \u201cget in\u201d and \u201cget healthy\u201d.\u00a0 There\u2019s enough pain that men want to defeat in their own lives that provide plenty of ammunition and success from men\u2019s ministries if\u2014like the parable of the Good Samaritan\u2014instead of being a church that walks on the other side of the street and says, \u201cHey!\u201d you know, or casts the idea that, \u201cYou have to clean yourself up before you can get over here,\u201d \u2014you go meet people or men who are like icebergs.\u00a0 Underneath the tip of their image, there is huge suffering.\u00a0 I assume nine out of ten\u2014when I\u2019m in front of men.\u00a0 There is an issue that they want to win at.\u00a0 You start talking and providing opportunities for them to deal with that\u2014they will come in droves!\u00a0 That\u2019s what we discovered at Saddleback.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we changed our paradigm to \u201cGet in, Get Healthy.\u201d\u00a0 Then, that transformation that happens is they\u2019re getting healthy in God, in their relationships, and their families.\u00a0 It\u2019s like creating a bank account that, then, you can spend on vision\u2014like, \u201cHey, I\u2019m so glad you\u2019re doing well.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad that you\u2019re happy that we\u2019re providing this for you.\u00a0 This is where this is going.\u00a0 Okay, we\u2019d love for you to get strong and become a solid disciple of Jesus Christ and join us in leadership, community, and service.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why we built that model\u2014the backend\u2014because we\u2019ve had, for 30 years, a lot of good catalytic experience and emotion; but what we need is clarity and intentionality in the process.\u00a0 Men love that.\u00a0 They love clarity.\u00a0 They\u2019re asking\u2014even though they are not verbalizing\u2014\u201cNow, that you\u2019ve got me.\u00a0 Where are you taking me?\u00a0 Where is this going?\u00a0 How am I going to end up fitting?\u201d\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have an answer for that, then, you lose them; but if you have a clear pathway for them\u2014when they get initially involved and you keep seeding that\u2014\u201cHey, here\u2019s where you are.\u00a0 Here\u2019s where we\u2019d love you to be, and here\u2019s what it involves.\u201d\u00a0 They really matriculate through the process.\u00a0 That\u2019s what changed our church.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s what the church is supposed to be about.\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s why I\u2019m excited about Super Saturday because we have gone to churches and said to churches, \u201cWould you put together a group of men who gather before the Super Bowl on Saturday\u2014before the Super Bowl?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, they can kind of thump their chests and have some rally cries; but at the core\u2014hear biblical messages on courageous manhood of a true follower of Jesus Christ and how you can begin to deal with some of the demons\u2014some of the stuff, as you\u2019ve said, Kenny, below the surface\u2014from the tip of the iceberg\u2014those core issues that are just knocking the daylights out of guys.\u00a0 They can\u2019t get beyond and how to begin to fellowship with other guys\u2014get authentic; get real.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, not just have an event, but begin to launch something, from that point, that begins to be a self-sustaining movement of men, led by men in the church, going forward.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 That sounds awesome!\u00a0 Let\u2019s do it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s do it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s do it!\u00a0 No, you\u2014you know what I was thinking about <em>Stepping Up<\/em> and watching the content?\u00a0 It\u2019s so beautifully done.\u00a0 It resonated with me so deeply, and I see a lot of stuff.\u00a0 This is such high-quality\u2014resonating content\u2014but you know what I was thinking, in the context of Super Saturday\u2014it\u2019s sort of like being in the red zone.\u00a0 You can move the ball in the middle of the field without issue.\u00a0 Most teams can move the ball; but when they get into that red zone, the field shrinks.\u00a0 It\u2019s like a fist fight in a phone booth.\u00a0 It is so hard to push it across.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s so appropriate to have Super Saturday because there are millions of men who are bogged down in the red zones of life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and family\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, they are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and marriage.\u00a0 They move the ball, and they score consistently in other realms; but in their relationship with God\u2014 their relationship with their wife, how they\u2019re leading their family, their personal character\u2014 they are bogged down in the red zone.\u00a0 No man likes to see the guy with the soccer cleats come on every time and kick field goals.\u00a0 You\u2019re not going to Super Bowl.\u00a0 I was sitting there listening to <em>Stepping Up<\/em>\u2014the curriculum\u2014and I went, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Red zone versus end zone\u2014he wants to be in the end zone.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kenny:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cHe wants to go from frustration to celebration.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what FamilyLife is offering all churches and men\u2019s
