year, being a little more intentional in the area of spiritual equipping, training, and discipleship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Bob, do you know the thing that this couple who joins us on today's broadcast remind me most about?\u00a0 In fact, every time I see their faces, the image of this occurring\u2014I just break out in a big grin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have no idea what you're talking about.\u00a0 What do you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, they wrote a book called <em>PlayStation Nation<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s about computer games and how we have a generation of young people who are addicted.\u00a0 The story\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Yes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Remember the story they told of the kids who wouldn't obey their parents; and the mom caught them, in the middle of the night?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Yes, that's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you remember, Olivia?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Yes, right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What did the mother do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> She took the system, and she wrapped it all up, and she went up to their top story, and she threw it off the deck of her house.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And it crashed onto the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> \u2014and it crashed onto the rocks below.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> To what she described as the beautiful sound of electronics smashing on the ground.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You can't get that out of your mind?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think that's great\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> It is a great story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It's a great image because the boys who were playing the game were somewhere on one of the other floors, peering out the window.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cMom's lost her mind!\u00a0 Mom's going crazy!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Oh, yes, they tried to wake up Dad, \"Dad, stop Mom!\u00a0 Stop her!\u00a0 She's going crazy!\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Does that stick with you because you've always wanted to go up on the top of the house and throw something off and just see what happens?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Perhaps.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 You know, I think every parent wants to get the upper hand and feel like, for just a moment, they've had it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> We should have clarified\u2014make sure the child's hands are off of the remote controls while you're throwing the system over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That is true.\u00a0 That is true.\u00a0 You don't want to wrap the child up with it when you toss it over the edge.\u00a0 Well, anyway, Kurt and Olivia Bruner join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Kurt and Olivia, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Thanks for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I do appreciate that story.\u00a0 And I appreciate this new resource you have created called <em>Just Add Family<\/em>.\u00a0 Now, Olivia, you were a former schoolteacher\u2014so, you know how to teach\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014not only your four children, but other children, as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Yes, and that was part of it\u2014was to make it fun.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And, Kurt, you worked at <em>Focus on the Family<\/em> for\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Twenty years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Twenty years\u2014I was going to guess 15.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Because you look so young.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That's it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Those years are flying by.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> They are.\u00a0 He is now a pastor of Lakepoint Church in Dallas, Texas, and heads up spiritual formation there.\u00a0 I just want to know what caused you to create this\u2014well, it's called <em>Just Add Family<\/em>.\u00a0 You're not actually making a family\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It looks like a recipe tin that's in there; doesn't it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Well, people would have to get a picture of what this is.\u00a0 So, you have a tin can there, which really kind of reflects a recipe box or a pre-packaged cake mix; right?\u00a0 The idea being all you have to do is add your family; and it has all you need\u2014easy recipes for faith-filled fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe thought this would be a great way for families, who want to be intentional\u2014whether it's at bedtime, or at mealtime, or drive time, or with family night activities, whatever it might be\u2014to be able to just grab a recipe card rather than read a book and say, \"Hey, I can take this idea; and I can do that in the next five minutes.\" \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you talk about families who want to be intentional.\u00a0 As you think about that, I'm thinking, \"I don't know that I\u2014as a dad, as a husband\u2014was ever schooled in the need to be intentional.\"\u00a0 I think I got married, and had kids, and thought, \u201cWell, you know, you just kind of roll with the punches.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Where you're in a reactive mode, right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Probably\u2014and don't you think most parents\u2014most Christians\u2014are?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, if I hadn't taken a class from Dr. Howard Hendricks at Dallas Theological Seminary, I don't think this concept of being intentional\u2014about making fun family memories, and passing on biblical truth, and giving them core convictions at the same time\u2014would ever have occurred to me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, I attempted it on my own and had some really dumb games that we played.\u00a0 You know, we gave the kids an old fishing rod and reel that they couldn't hurt\u2014and they didn't have a hook on the end\u2014but we kind of made one, I think, out of a paper clip.\u00a0 I hid behind the couch while they'd throw the line over.\u00a0 As I recall, we made little paper fish that had character qualities on them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Oh, that's great.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And so they'd catch a fish, and we'd talk about doing what's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> I love it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Or we'd talk about honesty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> See, it wasn't dumb.\u00a0 You called it dumb.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> It wasn't dumb.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, it didn't certainly have the appeal this has.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Well, let me just say that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is pretty cool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> \u2014that idea is not in the <em>Just Add Family<\/em> kit.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But it will be in <em>Just Add Family 2<\/em>, the sequel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Yes, that's right.\u00a0 But I'll say, Dennis, at least you tried something\u2014engaging instead of sitting there and boring your kids.\u00a0 I grew up in a Christian family with great Christian parents.\u00a0 They brought us to church.\u00a0 About once a year, the pastor would preach on having family devotions or family altar, or whatever they would call it.\u00a0 My dad would feel guilty because he wasn't doing anything like that.\u00a0 My mom would nudge him, and then he'd try.\u00a0 So, the seven children\u2014we'd sit on the couch\u2014and he would open his Bible.\u00a0 He's supposed to be inspiring us with the faith or something.\u00a0 We would\u2014you know\u2014we'd sabotage it within a few days because we'd rather go to the dentist than go through something called family devotions.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, we didn't want our kids to have their emotional association with our faith to be the most boring, dry time of the week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> We wanted it to be the thing they look forward to\u2014the time we're going to talk about what we believe is going to be engaging, and fun, and just creating great memories. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And did you start with that kind of intentionality from day one of the Kurt and Olivia Bruner marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> No, actually\u2014and that's the encouraging part because we weren't doing anything.\u00a0 I came from a background where I wasn't in a Christian home.\u00a0 So, I didn't have <em>any<\/em> example to follow.\u00a0 I remember when we first started talking about this\u2014Kurt was vice president of <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>.\u00a0 He had written books, he was in seminary\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Elder at my church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Elder at the church, doing all this stuff for everybody else, but we weren't really doing anything in our own home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> In fact, our oldest was five, and our second was three.\u00a0 I went on a business trip\u2014actually, with a guy who worked with IBM\u2014whom you have met and had on the show\u2014Jim Wideman\u2014but at the time, he was working for IBM.\u00a0 He started talking about all these things he's doing with his kids that he called \"Family Nights\".\u00a0 Boy, I sat there and thought, \"I have more education and more\u2014you know, I'm an elder in the church, for heaven\u2019s sake\u2014this is just a layman.\"\u00a0 So, I started stealing his ideas. We started meeting together for lunch once a month to say, \"Hey, here's an idea I tried,\" or, \"Here's one that flopped; but you know, if you twist it this way, it might change.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just, as a group of guys, started brainstorming, \u201cHow can we be intentional with our kids about engaging object-lesson-based activities?\u201d\u00a0 Then we partnered with John Trent, a good friend of mine, who wrote a book called <em>The Blessing<\/em>.\u00a0 You've probably talked to him about that.\u00a0 \u201cWell, how can we do bedtime blessing?\u00a0 What are some things we could do at bedtime that make it very easy in little, small, spoon-size chunks to bless our children as we're putting them to bed?\u00a0 So, how do we capture those moments?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, a lot of people talk about it\u2014a lot of people want to do it\u2014so, we thought, \"Hey, wouldn't it be fun to actually just make some recipe cards that you can grab on the fly and incorporate it into the everyday-ness of life?\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> And we did realize that it's hard to do.\u00a0 I mean, even as intentional as we want to be and we are in our lives\u2014and to actually get to it is hard.\u00a0 So, to make it easy\u2014and make it into a kit where they can just pull out a card is very simple, easy to read, and it looks fun for the kids\u2014makes it a little bit easier.\u00a0 We feel like, during these years, if we can make it fun\u2014make it appealing when they think about our faith\u2014they have a good feeling, they have love, they have fun\u2014and Mom and Dad\u2014then, we're earning the right, and we're setting up the right, when they're teenagers, to go to the Scripture and have a Bible study with them and discuss worldview issues with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tReally, you're creating the idea that, \u201cIf I have a spiritual question, who do I go to?\u00a0 Yes, I can go to my youth pastor, but I want to go to my Mom and Dad, too, and say \u2018What do you think about this?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 You're creating that environment in your home, where faith is discussed as an important part\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Earning the right to influence them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And just to kind of assume nothing here, from a biblical perspective, this is commanded in Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Yes, it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Deuteronomy 6\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> You had to get to that; didn't you?\u00a0 Well, \u201cIf there's something I ought to do, I certainly don't want to do it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you know, but here's the thing\u2014when God was forming the nation of Israel, and He was sending them off to establish this new nation that had its own spiritual identity\u2014He charged the fathers and mothers with, first of all, modeling a love for God but, secondly, passing it on through the everyday teaching of life\u2014but also formal, intentional teaching.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you've had 10\/15-plus years, as a family, of trying to be intentional, trying to disciple your kids, and make this kind of thing happen.\u00a0 What has been the net effect of that in the Bruner family, Olivia?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Well, the net effect\u2014I would say the bottom line effect is relationship, which is the great part.\u00a0 We have built a very strong relationship with our kids.\u00a0 They know they can talk to us; we know we can talk to them.\u00a0 We have created an environment where they realize we want to talk to them about their faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt's also been growth, and every stage is different.\u00a0 I always say, \"You know, be flexible\u2014if anything, as a parent, be flexible,\" because every stage of <em>their<\/em> spiritual growth is different.\u00a0 It's not about putting a child in a box and saying, \"You must look exactly like this or act exactly like this.\"\u00a0 It's about their relationship with God\u2014and to watch our children begin to develop their relationship with God, starting at a young age, where it was us just telling them through\u2014whether it be a fishing rod and paper fishes or a little\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> That's a bad idea. [Laughter]\u00a0 I don\u2019t like that idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or a little\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it's a brilliant idea. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said it was dumb earlier.\u00a0 Now, you're rising to defend it; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Or something a little more high-tech like we do\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, there you go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Basically, you're creating that environment for them to grow and for them to see, \"Hey, Mom and Dad are modeling it; and Mom and Dad grow at the same time.\"\u00a0 That's the neat thing\u2014we have grown through it\u2014I have learned.\u00a0 I mean, as a parent, you learn from your children.\u00a0 They come up with these great statements and sayings during family nights, that I go, \"That is a good point.\"\u00a0 We've developed this atmosphere in our home where faith and spiritual growth is talked about amongst each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So give us an idea, Kurt, of what a typical <em>Just Add Family<\/em> event would look like.\u00a0 If I pulled\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No, no, no, let's just pull one out of the can\u2014one of the recipe cards.\u00a0 Kurt, I know you have this one committed to memory.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> What color\u2014okay\u2014it's the green shaded\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> What does the green one say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is called a \"Special Occasion\" recipe, and we need to mention there are bedtime recipes\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Mealtime.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Mealtime\u2014this one is a \u201cSpecial Occasion\u201d recipe\u2014in case you need to look and have a cheat sheet there, Kurt.\u00a0 It's card number two of \"Special Occasions.\"\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Okay, it's called \"Spittin' Image\".\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> That's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Spittin' Image.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Now, wait, this is sounding messy to begin with.\u00a0 I'm not sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Back up, back up, because here it goes.\u00a0 Okay, so you want to hear, \u201cWhat does this typically look like?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 That's what you're saying; right, Bob?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Okay, so, typically, it looks like this:\u00a0 \"Oh, my goodness!\u00a0 It's Family Night.\u00a0 We've got to do something.\u00a0 Have you thought of anything to do?\"\u00a0 \"No, I haven't thought of anything to do, but the kids are expecting us to do something on Family Night.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Where is that recipe can?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Where is that can?\u00a0 We really wish this can had existed starting 10 or 15 years ago in our house because we had to come up with ideas or call our friends and say, \"What did you do last week for Family Night?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo the first step is realizing, \"I didn't prepare anything;\" alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, so tell me what I'm doing in the spittin' thing now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Alright, you go ahead.\u00a0 Do you want the card?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Oooh, I would get the card.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Well, let's start with\u2014we'll share the duty here.\u00a0 First of all, the card has at the top the title, and then it says, \"Best use.\u00a0 How should you use this card?\"\u00a0 The first is: \"As a Family Night activity, near a child's birthday, to reinforce their special identity.\"\u00a0 So you're thinking, \"Okay, it's a special occasion recipe card.\u00a0 What's the occasion?\u00a0 Well, one of the kids is having a birthday, let's do something significant.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo you're going to need some ingredients.\u00a0 It lists the ingredients.\u00a0 So, you've got your prep ready here\u2014large pieces of butcher paper available\u2014you can get those from, like, Sunday school supply stores, or grocery stores, or whatever\u2014you need some of those.\u00a0 So, this is one where you'd want to think in advance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You really can go back to the produce section in a grocery store\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong>\u00a0 You can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And just ask them if they'll tear off a chunk of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> A big piece of butcher paper.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There you go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> \u201cWhat's the nutritional value?\u201d That's listed as well.\u00a0 \u201cThe nutritional value of this recipe card is it affirms your child as one made in the image of God.\u201d\u00a0 So, that's the point of what you are about to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> All right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Okay, so what you're going to do is\u2014this one actually has two activities\u2014and I always encourage\u2014if you don't want to do them both just do one.\u00a0 But you're going to start out with having your kid lie flat on the paper.\u00a0 You're going to draw basically an outline of them, and actually let them do it.\u00a0 If you have a couple of them, let one child outline one and, then, the other child outlines the other. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So if you have six kids, like we do, you might want to slip the butcher five bucks.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You might need to <em>become<\/em> the butcher.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Buy something when you ask for the paper. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I'm just picturing how much paper that would take.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> We have gotten a lot of questions when we've had to get things for Family Night from people, \"What do you need that for?\" \u2014you know?\u00a0 Yes, so they are basically making a spittin' image\u2014hence, the title\u2014of themselves on this.\u00a0\u00a0 Then, you're going to get out the markers; and they are going to, after their outline is drawn, they're going to actually make a picture of themselves\u2014make it look as much like them as they can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> So if they're wearing blue pants, they might color the pants blue, and so forth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Okay, so after you do that\u2014and that's going to take a while\u2014so that's what I mean\u2014if you just want to do that one, that will work.\u00a0 But if you have kids that are just having a blast, and you're engaged, and you're not in a hurry to get to bed, then, \u201cLet's do the next one.\u201d\u00a0 You're going to get out your play dough, and you're going to do the same thing\u2014you're going to try to make an image of yourself with the play dough.\u00a0 If you're a boy, obviously, you're hair is shorter; if you're a girl, it's going to be longer; and this is <em>fun<\/em>.\u00a0 This is all about creating an atmosphere where you are having fun with your family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So act goofy, have fun with your kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Yes, exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Right, the two-year-old\u2019s messing with the play dough while they're supposed to be drawing; that's okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It's not a matter of achieving the objective.\u00a0 It's a matter of building relationship\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And driving home a spiritual principle, at the same time; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> And, honestly, especially when the kids are younger, I'm less concerned about whether they get the point than they've emotively-connected:\u00a0 \u201cWhen we talk about God in this family, it's a great time;\u201d alright?\u00a0 I want to reinforce, at the emotional level\u2014 whether they get the point or not\u2014although, they get a lot of points.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> They get them; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And Family Night is going to be a fun time; right?\u00a0 I mean, Family Night is not going to be, \"Oh, here comes another lecture from dad.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So far, there has been no actual spitting involved in this.\u00a0 Is there spitting coming somewhere?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> \"Spittin' image\" is actually a phrase, Bob, that\u2019s used\u2014\u201cYou're in the spittin' image of God.\u201d\u00a0 We're going to get there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was too literal on this; wasn't I? \u2014too black and white.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Okay, so after\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Although, that's a great idea!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No, no, no.\u00a0 I should not have suggested\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Dennis could come up with a good activity for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There's been some real interesting Family Nights at Bob's house, over the years.\u00a0 Keep going, Olivia.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Okay.\u00a0 The point of this is they have made two different examples of their image.\u00a0 Then, you're going to take some time and get quiet.\u00a0 This is where they do sit and listen, and we do go into the Bible.\u00a0 I had a pastor ask me, \"Well, you don't open your Bible and read chapters at a time at Family Night?\"\u00a0 I said, \"No, but we are not opposed to opening your Bible.\"\u00a0 I mean, you want to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> In moderation\u2014in moderation. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> We want you to open your Bible\u2014 that's not what we're saying.\u00a0 This isn't in lieu of your Bible, this is in addition to.\u00a0 So we, then, open it up and start talking about what does it mean to be made\u2014us\u2014 to be made in the image of God?\u00a0 We start that discussion with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have to stop you, Kurt, because some just heard you kind of kid about this\u2014\"In moderation\".\u00a0 Why do you say that word?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Well, because, actually\u2014well, it isn't just\u2014but you can only feed\u2014to your children so much at a time; right?\u00a0 You can't\u2014you're not going to want to read six chapters of the Scripture in association with it or else what you've done is you've lost them.\u00a0 You want to drill home the specific, very limited concept of what you're dealing with, at that time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, in one sense, you were teasing when you said, \"in moderation\"; but in another sense, you were saying\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> It is in moderation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Don't pour too much into a thimble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Yes, exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, yes.\u00a0 It's just like when they're young\u2014you don't pour that much fluid in the glass.\u00a0 Of course, they have sippy cups, now, that can't spill, anyway.\u00a0 So, that's a bad illustration.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> That worked before, though.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you don't want them to over-eat cotton candy and candy corn or there's going to be a mess that way, too; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Well, you do have to be sensitive to \u201cWhere is the child?\u201d in terms of their ability to comprehend and so forth.\u00a0 Like, \u201cDo we want to deal with the doctrine of the Trinity at five?\u201d\u00a0 Well, in truth, our daughter was sitting there one day.\u00a0 We've gotten into the habit of catching\u2014kind of getting clues of what they're picking up and such.\u00a0 My daughter was sitting there, very intensely concentrating, as if somebody trying to thread a needle.\u00a0 She was thinking; and she said, \"Okay, God lives in our heart, and Jesus lives in our heart.\u00a0 So, both of those guys do.\"\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 We realized, \"I don't think she's getting all of the concepts we're trying to get across, but she's reaching for them.\u201d\u00a0 That's the goal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> That's exactly right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, I'm reaching into the can here.\u00a0 There's a \"memory pantry\", that's kind of a clear plastic box, that's in there.\u00a0 I'm assuming you've got 52.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> There are 48.\u00a0 We wanted to assume that you're not going\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You're going to take a vacation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Yes, that there's\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Forty-eight recipes, then, for special occasions, bedtime, mealtime\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> The goal was, \u201cIf you could do it four times a month, over a year.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Here is Bob's secret sauce recipe.\u00a0 That must be where the spitting occurs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [Laughter]\u00a0\u00a0 I don't spit in my sauce.\u00a0 What are you talking about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cCooking from scratch\u201d\u2014it's all about doing what Psalm 78 talks about, which is passing on the truth about God to your children\u2014and you, as a parent\u2014your experience of God, as a follower of Jesus Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> That's right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And, you know, that is the command of Scripture to us, as parents, to make that handoff in the relay race so that our children, as much as it depends upon us, don't end up being in that 50 percent category you were talking about where we lose them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is my challenge\u2014I want to challenge every listener\u2014that has a family\u2014and I think you can use this 12 and under.\u00a0 I think you could use it a little older than that\u2014but even if they spread out beyond that\u2014take the next 12 months and become intentional, in your family, about passing on the truth of God's Word to your children.\u00a0 And, frankly, Bob, this can right here and the recipes would be a great way to start.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I mean, it's a recipe box and it\u2019s got recipes for how you can be intentional.\u00a0 That\u2019s a word we\u2019ve kicked around a lot here. bit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Speaking of the new year, we have just a few days left in 2012.\u00a0 I\u2019ve noticed you\u2019ve been praying a little more regularly than I\u2019ve seen you pray in recent days.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know what?\u00a0 You\u2019re laughing about remind me most about?\u00a0 In fact, every time I see their faces, the image of this occurring\u2014I just break out in a big grin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I have no idea what you're talking about.\u00a0 What do you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, they wrote a book called <em>PlayStation Nation<\/em>. right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Do you remember, Olivia?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Yes, the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> \u2014and it crashed onto the rocks below.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> To what she described as the they tried to wake up Dad, \"Dad, stop Mom!\u00a0 Stop her!\u00a0 She's going crazy!\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Does that stick with you because you've always wanted to go up on the top of the house and throw something off and just see what happens?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Perhaps.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 You know, I think every parent wants to get the upper hand and feel like, for just a moment, they've had it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> We should have clarified\u2014make sure the child's hands are off of the remote controls while you're throwing the system over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That is true.\u00a0 That is true.\u00a0 You don't want to wrap the Church in Dallas, Texas, and heads up spiritual formation there.\u00a0 I just want to know what caused you to create this\u2014well, it's called <em>Just Add Family<\/em>.\u00a0 You're not actually making a family\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> It looks like a recipe tin that's in there; doesn't it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Well, people would have to get a picture of what this is.\u00a0 So, you have a tin can there, which really kind of reflects a recipe box or a pre-packaged cake mix; right?\u00a0 The idea being all you have to do is add your family; and it has all you need\u2014easy recipes for faith-filled fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe thought this would be a great way for families, who want to be intentional\u2014whether it's at bedtime, or at mealtime, or drive time, or with family night activities, whatever it might be\u2014to be able to just grab a recipe card rather than read a book and say, \"Hey, I can take this idea; and I can do that in the next five minutes.\" \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you talk about families who want to be intentional.\u00a0 As you think about that, I'm thinking, \"I don't know that I\u2014as a dad, as a husband\u2014was ever schooled in the need to be intentional.\"\u00a0 I think I got married, and had kids, and thought, \u201cWell, you know, you just kind of roll with the punches.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Where you're in a reactive mode, right? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Probably\u2014and don't you think most parents\u2014most Christians\u2014are?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, if I hadn't taken a class from Dr. Howard Hendricks at Dallas Theological Seminary, I don't think this concept of being intentional\u2014about making fun family memories, and passing on biblical truth, and giving them core convictions at the same time\u2014would ever have occurred to me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, I attempted it on my own and had some really dumb games that we played.\u00a0 You know, we gave the kids an old fishing rod and reel that they couldn't hurt\u2014and they didn't have a hook on the end\u2014but we kind of made one, I think, out of a paper clip.\u00a0 I hid behind the couch while they'd throw the line over.\u00a0 As I recall, we made little paper fish that had character qualities on them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Oh, that's great.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And so they'd catch a fish, and we'd talk about doing what's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> I love it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Or we'd talk about honesty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> See, it wasn't dumb.\u00a0 You called it dumb.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> It wasn't dumb.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, it didn't certainly have the appeal this has.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Well, let me just say that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> This is pretty cool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> \u2014that idea is not in the <em>Just Add Family<\/em> kit.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> But it will be in <em>Just Add Family 2<\/em>, the sequel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Yes, that's right.\u00a0 But I'll say, Dennis, at least you tried something\u2014engaging instead of sitting there and boring your kids.\u00a0 I grew up in a Christian family with great Christian parents.\u00a0 They brought us to church.\u00a0 About once a year, the pastor would preach on having family devotions or family altar, or whatever they would call it.\u00a0 My dad would feel guilty because he wasn't doing anything like that.\u00a0 My mom would nudge him, and then he'd try.\u00a0 So, the seven children\u2014we'd sit on the couch\u2014and he would open his Bible.\u00a0 He's supposed to be inspiring us with the faith or something.\u00a0 We would\u2014you know\u2014we'd sabotage it within a few days because we'd rather go to the dentist than go through something called family devotions.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, we didn't want our kids to have their emotional association with our faith to be the most boring, dry time of the week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> No doubt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> We wanted it to be the thing they look forward to\u2014the time we're going to talk about what we believe is going to be engaging, and fun, and just creating great memories. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And did you start with that kind of intentionality from day one of the Kurt and Olivia Bruner marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> No, actually\u2014and that's the encouraging part because we weren't doing anything.\u00a0 I came from a background where I wasn't in a Christian home.\u00a0 So, I didn't have <em>any<\/em> example to follow.\u00a0 I remember when we first started talking about this\u2014Kurt was vice president of <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>.\u00a0 He had written books, he was in seminary\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Elder at my church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Elder at the church, doing all this stuff for everybody else, but we weren't really doing anything in our own home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> In fact, our oldest was five, and our second was three.\u00a0 I went on a business trip\u2014actually, with a guy who worked with IBM\u2014whom you have met and had on the show\u2014Jim Wideman\u2014but at the time, he was working for IBM.\u00a0 He started talking about all these things he's doing with his kids that he called \"Family Nights\".\u00a0 Boy, I sat there and thought, \"I have more education and more\u2014you know, I'm an elder in the church, for heaven\u2019s sake\u2014this is just a layman.\"\u00a0 So, I started stealing his ideas. We started meeting together for lunch once a month to say, \"Hey, here's an idea I tried,\" or, \"Here's one that flopped; but you know, if you twist it this way, it might change.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just, as a group of guys, started brainstorming, \u201cHow can we be intentional with our kids about engaging object-lesson-based activities?\u201d\u00a0 Then we partnered with John Trent, a good friend of mine, who wrote a book called <em>The Blessing<\/em>.\u00a0 You've probably talked to him about that.\u00a0 \u201cWell, how can we do bedtime blessing?\u00a0 What are some things we could do at bedtime that make it very easy in little, small, spoon-size chunks to bless our children as we're putting them to bed?\u00a0 So, how do we capture those moments?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, a lot of people talk about it\u2014a lot of people want to do it\u2014so, we thought, \"Hey, wouldn't it be fun to actually just make some recipe cards that you can grab on the fly and incorporate it into the everyday-ness of life?\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> And we did realize that it's hard to do.\u00a0 I mean, even as intentional as we want to be and we are in our lives\u2014and to actually get to it is hard.\u00a0 So, to make it easy\u2014and make it into a kit where they can just pull out a card is very simple, easy to read, and it looks fun for the kids\u2014makes it a little bit easier.\u00a0 We feel like, during these years, if we can make it fun\u2014make it appealing when they think about our faith\u2014they have a good feeling, they have love, they have fun\u2014and Mom and Dad\u2014then, we're earning the right, and we're setting up the right, when they're teenagers, to go to the Scripture and have a Bible study with them and discuss worldview issues with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tReally, you're creating the idea that, \u201cIf I have a spiritual question, who do I go to?\u00a0 Yes, I can go to my youth pastor, but I want to go to my Mom and Dad, too, and say \u2018What do you think about this?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 You're creating that environment in your home, where faith is discussed as an important part\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Earning the right to influence them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And just to kind of assume nothing here, from a biblical perspective, this is commanded in Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Yes, it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Deuteronomy 6\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> You had to get to that; didn't you?\u00a0 Well, \u201cIf there's something I ought to do, I certainly don't want to do it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you know, but here's the thing\u2014when God was forming the nation of Israel, and He was sending them off to establish this new nation that had its own spiritual identity\u2014He charged the fathers and mothers with, first of all, modeling a love for God but, secondly, passing it on through the everyday teaching of life\u2014but also formal, intentional teaching.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So you've had 10\/15-plus years, as a family, of trying to be intentional, trying to disciple your kids, and make this kind of thing happen.\u00a0 What has been the net effect of that in the Bruner family, Olivia?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Well, the net effect\u2014I would say the bottom line effect is relationship, which is the great part.\u00a0 We have built a very strong relationship with our kids.\u00a0 They know they can talk to us; we know we can talk to them.\u00a0 We have created an environment where they realize we want to talk to them about their faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt's also been growth, and every stage is different.\u00a0 I always say, \"You know, be flexible\u2014if anything, as a parent, be flexible,\" because every stage of <em>their<\/em> spiritual growth is different.\u00a0 It's not about putting a child in a box and saying, \"You must look exactly like this or act exactly like this.\"\u00a0 It's about their relationship with God\u2014and to watch our children begin to develop their relationship with God, starting at a young age, where it was us just telling them through\u2014whether it be a fishing rod and paper fishes or a little\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> That's a bad idea. [Laughter]\u00a0 I don\u2019t like that idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or a little\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I think it's a brilliant idea. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You said it was dumb earlier.\u00a0 Now, you're rising to defend it; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Or something a little more high-tech like we do\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, there you go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Basically, you're creating that environment for them to grow and for them to see, \"Hey, Mom and Dad are modeling it; right, Bob?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Okay, so, typically, it looks like this:\u00a0 \"Oh, my goodness!\u00a0 It's Family Night.\u00a0 We've got to do something.\u00a0 Have you thought of anything to do?\"\u00a0 \"No, I haven't thought of anything to do, but the kids are expecting us to do something on Family Night.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Where is that recipe can?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Where is that can?\u00a0 We really wish this can had existed starting 10 or 15 years ago in our house because we had to come up with ideas or call our friends and say, \"What did you do last week for Family Night?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo the first step is realizing, \"I didn't prepare anything;\" alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay, so tell me what I'm doing in the spittin' thing now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Alright, you go ahead.\u00a0 Do you want the card?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Oooh, I would get the card.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Well, let's start with\u2014we'll share the duty here.\u00a0 First of all, the card has at the top the title, and then it says, \"Best use.\u00a0 How should you use this card?\"\u00a0 The first is: \"As a Family Night activity, near a child's birthday, to reinforce their special identity.\"\u00a0 So you're thinking, \"Okay, it's a special occasion recipe card.\u00a0 What's the occasion?\u00a0 Well, one of the kids is having a birthday, let's do something significant.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo you're going to need some ingredients.\u00a0 It lists the ingredients.\u00a0 So, you've got your prep ready here\u2014large pieces of butcher paper available\u2014you can get those from, like, Sunday school supply stores, or grocery stores, or whatever\u2014you need some of those.\u00a0 So, this is one where you'd want to think in advance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You really can go back to the produce section in a grocery store\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong>\u00a0 You can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And just ask them if they'll tear off a chunk of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> A big piece of butcher paper.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There you go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> \u201cWhat's the nutritional value?\u201d That's listed as well.\u00a0 \u201cThe nutritional value of this recipe card is it affirms your child as one made in the image of God.\u201d\u00a0 So, that's the point of what you are about to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> All right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Okay, so what you're going to do is\u2014this one actually has two activities\u2014and I always encourage\u2014if you don't want to do them both just do one.\u00a0 But you're going to start out with having your kid lie flat on the paper.\u00a0 You're going to draw basically an outline of them, and actually let them do it.\u00a0 If you have a couple of them, let one child outline one and, then, the other child outlines the other. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So if you have six kids, like we do, you might want to slip the butcher five bucks.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You might need to <em>become<\/em> the butcher.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Buy something when you ask for the paper. [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I'm just picturing how much paper that would take.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> We have gotten a lot of questions when we've had to get things for Family Night from people, \"What do you need that for?\" \u2014you know?\u00a0 Yes, so they are basically making a spittin' image\u2014hence, the title\u2014of themselves on this.\u00a0\u00a0 Then, you're going to get out the markers; and they are going to, after their outline is drawn, they're going to actually make a picture of themselves\u2014make it look as much like them as they can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> So if they're wearing blue pants, they might color the pants blue, and so forth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Okay, so after you do that\u2014and that's going to take a while\u2014so that's what I mean\u2014if you just want to do that one, that will work.\u00a0 But if you have kids that are just having a blast, and you're engaged, and you're not in a hurry to get to bed, then, \u201cLet's do the next one.\u201d\u00a0 You're going to get out your play dough, and you're going to do the same thing\u2014you're going to try to make an image of yourself with the play dough.\u00a0 If you're a boy, obviously, you're hair is shorter; if you're a girl, it's going to be longer; and this is <em>fun<\/em>.\u00a0 This is all about creating an atmosphere where you are having fun with your family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So act goofy, have fun with your kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Yes, exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Right, the two-year-old\u2019s messing with the play dough while they're supposed to be drawing; that's okay. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It's not a matter of achieving the objective.\u00a0 It's a matter of building relationship\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And driving home a spiritual principle, at the same time; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> And, honestly, especially when the kids are younger, I'm less concerned about whether they get the point than they've emotively-connected:\u00a0 \u201cWhen we talk about God in this family, it's a great time;\u201d alright?\u00a0 I want to reinforce, at the emotional level\u2014 whether they get the point or not\u2014although, they get a lot of points.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> They get them; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And Family Night is going to be a fun time; right?\u00a0 I mean, Family Night is not going to be, \"Oh, here comes another lecture from dad.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So far, there has been no actual spitting involved in this.\u00a0 Is there spitting coming somewhere?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> \"Spittin' image\" is actually a phrase, Bob, that\u2019s used\u2014\u201cYou're in the spittin' image of God.\u201d\u00a0 We're going to get there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I was too literal on this; wasn't I? \u2014too black and white.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Okay, so after\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Although, that's a great idea!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> No, no, no.\u00a0 I should not have suggested\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Dennis could come up with a good activity for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There's been some real interesting Family Nights at Bob's house, over the years.\u00a0 Keep going, Olivia.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Okay.\u00a0 The point of this is they have made two different examples of their image.\u00a0 Then, you're going to take some time and get quiet.\u00a0 This is where they do sit and listen, and we do go into the Bible.\u00a0 I had a pastor ask me, \"Well, you don't open your Bible and read chapters at a time at Family Night?\"\u00a0 I said, \"No, but we are not opposed to opening your Bible.\"\u00a0 I mean, you want to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> In moderation\u2014in moderation. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> We want you to open your Bible\u2014 that's not what we're saying.\u00a0 This isn't in lieu of your Bible, this is in addition to.\u00a0 So we, then, open it up and start talking about what does it mean to be made\u2014us\u2014 to be made in the image of God?\u00a0 We start that discussion with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I have to stop you, Kurt, because some just heard you kind of kid about this\u2014\"In moderation\".\u00a0 Why do you say that word?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Well, because, actually\u2014well, it isn't just\u2014but you can only feed\u2014to your children so much at a time; right?\u00a0 You can't\u2014you're not going to want to read six chapters of the Scripture in association with it or else what you've done is you've lost them.\u00a0 You want to drill home the specific, very limited concept of what you're dealing with, at that time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> So, in one sense, you were teasing when you said, \"in moderation\"; but in another sense, you were saying\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> It is in moderation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Don't pour too much into a thimble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> Yes, exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, yes.\u00a0 It's just like when they're young\u2014you don't pour that much fluid in the glass.\u00a0 Of course, they have sippy cups, now, that can't spill, anyway.\u00a0 So, that's a bad illustration.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> That worked before, though.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And you don't want them to over-eat cotton candy and candy corn or there's going to be a mess that way, too; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Well, you do have to be sensitive to \u201cWhere is the child?\u201d in terms of their ability to comprehend and so forth.\u00a0 Like, \u201cDo we want to deal with the doctrine of the Trinity at five?\u201d\u00a0 Well, in truth, our daughter was sitting there one day.\u00a0 We've gotten into the habit of catching\u2014kind of getting clues of what they're picking up and such.\u00a0 My daughter was sitting there, very intensely concentrating, as if somebody trying to thread a needle.\u00a0 She was thinking; and she said, \"Okay, God lives in our heart, and Jesus lives in our heart.\u00a0 So, both of those guys do.\"\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 We realized, \"I don't think she's getting all of the concepts we're trying to get across, but she's reaching for them.\u201d\u00a0 That's the goal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Olivia:<\/strong> That's exactly right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, I'm reaching into the can here.\u00a0 There's a \"memory pantry\", that's kind of a clear plastic box, that's in there.\u00a0 I'm assuming you've got 52.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> There are 48.\u00a0 We wanted to assume that you're not going\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> You're going to take a vacation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> Yes, that there's\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Forty-eight recipes, then, for special occasions, bedtime, mealtime\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> The goal was, \u201cIf you could do it four times a month, over a year.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Here is Bob's secret sauce recipe.\u00a0 That must be where the spitting occurs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> [Laughter]\u00a0\u00a0 I don't spit in my sauce.\u00a0 What are you talking about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u201cCooking from scratch\u201d\u2014it's all about doing what Psalm 78 talks about, which is passing on the truth about God to your children\u2014and you, as a parent\u2014your experience of God, as a follower of Jesus Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kurt:<\/strong> That's right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And, you know, that is the command of Scripture to us, as parents, to make that handoff in the relay race so that our children, as much as it depends upon us, don't end up being in that 50 percent category you were talking about where we lose them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is my challenge\u2014I want to challenge every listener\u2014that has a family\u2014and I think you can use this 12 and under.\u00a0 I think you could use it a little older than that\u2014but even if they spread out beyond that\u2014take the next 12 months and become intentional, in your family, about passing on the truth of God's Word to your children.\u00a0 And, frankly, Bob, this can right here and the recipes would be a great way to start.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> I mean, it's a recipe box and it\u2019s got recipes for how you can be intentional.\u00a0 That\u2019s a word we\u2019ve kicked around a lot here.
