and that if God was calling him home, He was calling him home.\u00a0 We were okay with that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, December 12<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Rob and Rhonda Bugh join us today to talk about how you respond to life when the bottom drops out.\u00a0 Stay with us.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 You know\u2014part of the story we\u2019re going to hear today\u2014I don\u2019t know that I\u2019ve ever heard of a funeral or a memorial service where the line was ten hours long for folks to go through and to pay their respects for the deceased.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re going to hear a remarkable story today about a pair of choice servants of Jesus Christ.\u00a0 Rob and Rhonda Bugh join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Rhonda, Rob, welcome back to the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 It\u2019s great to be here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you, Dennis.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Together, they have hammered out a brand-new marriage; and I say, \u201cTogether, they\u2019ve hammered it out,\u201d because both of them were married for a number of years before their spouses died.\u00a0 Rob was married to Carol until 2006.\u00a0 They\u2019d been married for 27 years.\u00a0 They had four children.\u00a0 Rhonda was married to Tom who, by the way, was Rob\u2019s best friend; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Closest buddy on the planet.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And my accountability partner, and we prayed for our marriages, and our kids, and the cause of Christ, and on, and on, together, for years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rhonda, you and Tom had three children; and your husband died after 25 years of marriage in 2005.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to start with you back to that remarkable line of people\u2014ten hours, Rhonda.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Tom had the amazing ability to relate to many different levels of people.\u00a0 He was president of the medical staff at Central DuPage Hospital\u2014that at the time\u2014had about 800 doctors.\u00a0 He was a general surgeon.\u00a0 He was active in our church.\u00a0 He was a motorcycle driver.\u00a0 He had a semi truck driving license.\u00a0 He just was able to meet a lot of different people in his life, and they all came.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, take me back\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no.\u00a0 Before we go back to how they met, I know some of our listeners are going to want to know this.\u00a0 So, we need to get this right out of the way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, alright.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was it a Harley?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a Harley.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The important information is now recorded.\u00a0 So, take me back, now, to the 25 years before that memorial service.\u00a0 How did you and Tom meet?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tom and I met at the University of Iowa, and we went to medical school together at the University of Iowa.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was it about him that caught your eye?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, initially, we met\u2014he was a rugby player, and we met and lived in the same dorm.\u00a0 He was a very good looking, athletic man; and I guess, to be honest, that\u2019s what attracted me.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was a hunk.\u00a0 Let\u2019s just get it out here.\u00a0 He\u2019s a hunk; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just glad\u2014I\u2019m glad it was rugby and that you didn\u2019t meet over a cadaver.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s\u2014well, and then, that\u2019s the second part of it.\u00a0 We broke up.\u00a0 Due to a motorcycle accident that I was involved in, he came to visit me in the hospital; and our relationship blossomed again.\u00a0 We, then, started dating over a cadaver in anatomy class in medical school.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, how did he propose?\u00a0 How does a medical school student, a guy who is going to become a surgeon, propose to a future pediatrician?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is one of the most beautiful things.\u00a0 He\u2014we had gone to church together.\u00a0 We came home after church on a Sunday, and we would have devotions together.\u00a0 We were sitting on the couch, and we were reading Proverbs 31.\u00a0 Not sure exactly\u2014at that time, I wasn\u2019t sure why we were reading about Proverbs 31; but as he closed the Bible, it had my married name\u2014I guess he was pretty confident\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That you were going to say, \u201cYes\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014engraved on the Bible, and he asked\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019d already\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019d already engraved my name on the Bible and asked if I would marry him.\u00a0 That was our first devotion out of my Bible that I still use.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s pretty cool.\u00a0 So, you started your marriage, then.\u00a0 I mean what a\u2014med school\u2014that\u2019s pretty tough\u2014all the way through residency\u2014all those years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A surgeon married to a pediatrician with competing hours, but you did find time to have children; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 We did\u2014not the most opportune time.\u00a0 I had my first child in my third year of residency, and that was very difficult.\u00a0 I was on call, and he was on call every third night.\u00a0 So, we would be together every third night.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a hard time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Take us to the first indication\u2014and this was two-plus decades later\u2014the first indication that there was something physical that Tom had.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Tom and I were due to turn 50 and celebrate our 25<sup>th<\/sup> wedding anniversary.\u00a0 We had made plans to take our family, over Christmas break, to Hawaii to celebrate those milestones; but before that, in the fall, Tom, who was involved in a medical strategic networking, had been asked to come to Cuba to train medical students how to preach the Gospel and to really pray with their patients.\u00a0 <br><br>He had just come back from Cuba and was slightly hoarse.\u00a0 It was approximately six weeks before we were to leave for Hawaii, and he was having some hoarseness and some trouble swallowing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t think anything about it at the time; did you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 We did not because he used an inhaler for asthma at times, and they felt it was vocal cord inflammation from the inhaler.\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, how long before there were symptoms that drove you to further exploration?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 While we were in Hawaii, he stopped eating things that were difficult to swallow.\u00a0 When we got back on New Year\u2019s Eve, he went into the hospital to do an emergency appendicitis on a patient.\u00a0 While he was there, taking off his scrubs, he noticed a lump in his throat.\u00a0 From that moment on, it was a whirlwind.\u00a0 He had a CAT scan done, saw a surgeon, and four and half months later died.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The diagnosis\u2014that came from that CAT scan and that initial surgery\u2014take us to when you got that news\u2014when he got that news.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 The night he came home from doing the surgery\u2014he came home; and he said, \u201cRhonda, look.\u201d\u00a0 He showed me the lump in his throat.\u00a0 We were afraid, but the radiologist had felt it was just an enlarged thyroid that maybe had cancer in it.\u00a0 They elected to operate a few days later, and the surgeon immediately found it wasn\u2019t just a simple thyroid cancer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, how did you hear that news?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 The surgeon called me into the waiting room, and they told me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Two doctors who get the news you got\u2014you kind of know\u2014you\u2019ve been around the block a few times.\u00a0 You know, you hope for the best, you pray for the best; but you know what the odds are.\u00a0 How did you walk those next four months of life?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Day by day\u2014minute by minute.\u00a0 It\u2019s really\u2014when you go through something like that, you can\u2019t look ahead.\u00a0 It\u2019s too frightening, and each day is a blessing.\u00a0 If you read about this kind of cancer my husband had, there were only about six cases ever described\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and nobody, anywhere in the country, knew how to take care of it.\u00a0 Nothing worked on this type of cancer, and it\u2019s still totally untreatable.\u00a0 So, reading the literature, hearing the doctors\u2014his oncologist said, \u201cIt\u2019s not a good prognosis; but I can promise you this\u2014I\u2019m going to walk with you all along the way, and I\u2019m going to throw the kitchen sink at you.\u201d\u00a0 And they did\u2014maximal amounts of radiation, every chemotherapy drug that we could try.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if you look at all of that, you know the odds are not favorable; but we continued to really pray. We would use\u2014our church home was a tremendous support to us and just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rhonda, you started your relationship in Proverbs 31\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014with a Bible.\u00a0 It was not merely symbolic.\u00a0 You and Tom shared a vibrant faith.\u00a0 How did your faith sustain you two through that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sorry.\u00a0 [Crying]\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t expecting that.\u00a0 Well, my husband was a very godly man, and he never faltered.\u00a0 He was in the Word every day.\u00a0 Rob came over frequently\u2014and as friends and our pastor, he constantly looked to Rob, as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou cannot go through anything like this if you don\u2019t believe that what you\u2019re going through is God\u2019s sovereign will.\u00a0 The only way that you can move that foot in front of the other is to know there\u2019s light at the end of the tunnel, and there\u2019s a way out, and that we aren\u2019t\u2014and we both truly believed that we are not home and that if God was calling him home, He was calling him home.\u00a0 We were okay with that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There came a point, in your fight together, where you looked and you said, \u201cWe fought the good fight.\u00a0 Now, it\u2019s time to say, \u2018Goodbye.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 How long was the goodbye period?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 There were two times that I remember clearly saying, \u201cGoodbye.\u201d\u00a0 The first time was before he was going into his final surgery.\u00a0 The throat specialist at Loyola was going to do what was called a commando procedure, as a last ditch effort.\u00a0 The cancer was basically filling up Tom\u2019s neck, and he would suffocate to death.\u00a0 So, they decided to try a surgery to remove everything in his neck.\u00a0 Before he went into surgery, I, at that time, told him I didn\u2019t think I could go on without him.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know how to do life without him, and he assured me I would be fine.\u00a0 He gave me permission to marry again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the hardest time of saying goodbye was when the surgeon, the ear, nose, and throat specialist\u2014they all came and said, \u201cWe\u2019ve never seen a cancer like this.\u00a0 It spread quickly,\u201d and there was nothing more they could do.\u00a0 Tom wanted to keep fighting; and I had to say it was time to come home, and there was nothing more we could do.\u00a0 That\u2019s when, I think, we said our goodbye.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rob, you must have done the service, if he was your best friend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I did.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What do you remember from that memorial service?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Tom was highly-respected and deeply loved.\u00a0 He was a man\u2019s man, and he was a discipler.\u00a0 He had a real passion for taking people on the fringes and rooting them in the Gospel.\u00a0 Whether they were bikers, or carpenters, unemployed, or leading physicians, Tom wanted to be there for them.\u00a0 So, Tom and Rhonda, incidentally, had a stream of people that would live with them for periods of time\u2014that Tom would kind of take in to help\u2014doctors that were in trouble\u2014people like that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>So, there were several of us that shared.\u00a0 There were different people from different aspects of Tom\u2019s life; and then, my responsibility was to point people to the Jesus that Tom so deeply loved and to talk about the hope that was the obvious driver of Tom\u2019s life.\u00a0 That was an incredible privilege for me, and that was a great moment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had no idea, as you preached your friend\u2019s funeral, that the path you had been walking with him and with his widow would be a path you would find yourself on with your wife, a year and a half later?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, actually, Tom died in May of 2005.\u00a0 Then, in August of 2005, my wife was diagnosed with a different kind of cancer, a rare cancer that took the Mayo Clinic a couple of weeks to figure out.\u00a0 It ended up being an internal melanoma that originated in her colon area.\u00a0 That put us on a journey where we battled back and forth for about 11 months.\u00a0 Both Tom and Carol\u2019s cancers were similar in that they were very rare, and extremely aggressive, and very disfiguring.\u00a0 Carol ended up with baseball-sized tumors inside and outside her body; but Carol lived for 11 months and, then, died in August of 2006.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rhonda, do you remember\u2014you were grieving still the loss of your husband when you got the news that Rob\u2019s wife had a tumor.\u00a0 Do you remember what you thought?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 My thoughts were the community\u2019s thoughts: \u201cWhat is going on?\u201d\u00a0 It was very frightening.\u00a0 During that time, our church really rallied, as a community, and prayed a lot over what was happening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, he\u2019s your senior pastor.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s our senior pastor, and he was my pastor.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He cared for so many of you; and now, it was turning around that you needed to care for him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there a time when you and Carol said goodbye?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Carol spent the last couple months, Dennis, with a chemo mind\u2014what we call a chemo mind\u2014the effects of the radiation and the strong, strong drugs just took a toll on her; and in addition, the cancer spread to her brain.\u00a0 So, the last month or so, especially, when we would have had some conversations, we were not able to; but we had been saying goodbye, in a bunch of little ways, all along.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But one of the things I appreciated about the medical staff at MD Anderson Hospital, in Houston, where we were, is they never took away our hope.\u00a0 They never said, \u201cOne more month, and it is over.\u201d\u00a0 So, there was always this sense of which, \u201cMaybe we could find something else,\u201d or, \u201cMaybe she would qualify for a particular protocol.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOthers around us could see that that wasn\u2019t going to work\u2014especially, medical people\u2014but we just kept fighting; and pretty soon, it was gone.\u00a0 We did not have a time to formally say goodbye; but then, after Carol died, I discovered that she had written my four kids and me these wonderful letters.\u00a0 I include a copy of her letter to me in my book.\u00a0 Those were just masterpieces of a wife and a mother\u2019s commitment to her family and her commitment to Christ.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would you mind sharing your favorite part of that letter with our listeners?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 One is when Carol said, \u201cRob, you absolutely have no regrets.\u00a0 You\u2019ve been an amazing husband.\u201d\u00a0 That was kind of her first point.\u00a0 Another major point\u2014and little did we know what God had in store for us\u2014was when Carol gave me permission to remarry.\u00a0 Every couple is different.\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTom and Rhonda talked about that.\u00a0 Carol and I never talked about remarriage, but I got this letter a couple of days after she died.\u00a0 I found it; and she said, \u201cRob, I want to share you with somebody else.\u00a0 You have too much to offer.\u00a0 I believe in you.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want you to do this by yourself.\u00a0 I want to encourage you to remarry.\u201d\u00a0 That was an amazing thing for me to read.\u00a0 It really was stunning.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because of how foresighted she was\u2014how she was\u2014how selfless she was being, how\u2014[Crying]\u2014for so many of us, as Christ-followers, life is about us.\u00a0 Life is about me\u2014this kind of me-ism that is embedded in American evangelicalism.\u00a0 One of the amazing things about Carol\u2014amazing thing about Tom\u2014is life wasn\u2019t about them.\u00a0 That letter was just an incredible picture of that.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The subtitle of your book, <em>Finding Grace in the Depths of Disappointment\u2014<\/em>if you haven\u2019t been living in grace, experiencing grace, knowing the God of all grace\u2014you\u2019re more than likely not going to find it when you run into the type of valley that you two went through.\u00a0 I just appreciate both of you being willing to allow us to journey with you in that and share some of the lessons because I\u2019ve quoted Ecclesiastes, Chapter 7, verse 1, many times here on the broadcast.\u00a0 It just talks about how it is good to go to the house of mourning\u2014to the place where it\u2019s the end of a matter\u2014to the place where there\u2019s death because the living takes it to heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s a message for us today.\u00a0 Where are you in your relationship with God?\u00a0 Are you experiencing the God of all grace?\u00a0 Do you know Him, and are you walking with Him?\u2014because you don\u2019t get ready to meet Him when you come to death\u2019s door.\u00a0 You need to be spending a lifetime doing that.\u00a0 If you miss Him, you\u2019ve missed life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 The point is that God\u2019s sustaining grace is not something that we just reach out and tap into in the midst of the storm.\u00a0 It\u2019s something that you cultivate throughout a lifetime so that it\u2019s there\u2014it\u2019s always there\u2014but the question is, \u201cHave we been learning how to walk in grace, and how to walk by faith, even on the sunny days?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 <br><br>I think your book does a great job of spelling out some of the very practical things that both of you went through as and to pay their respects for the deceased.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re going to hear a remarkable story today about a pair of choice servants of Jesus Christ.\u00a0 Rob and Rhonda Bugh join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Rhonda, Rob, welcome back to the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 It\u2019s great to be here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you, Dennis.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Together, they have hammered out a brand-new marriage; and I say, \u201cTogether, they\u2019ve hammered it out,\u201d because both of them were married for a number of years before their spouses died.\u00a0 Rob was married to Carol until 2006.\u00a0 They\u2019d been married for 27 years.\u00a0 They had four children.\u00a0 Rhonda was married to Tom who, by the way, was Rob\u2019s best friend; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Closest buddy on the planet.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And my accountability partner, and we prayed for our marriages, and our kids, and the cause of Christ, and on, and on, together, for years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rhonda, you and Tom had three children; and your husband died after 25 years of marriage in 2005.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to start with you back to that remarkable line of people\u2014ten hours, Rhonda.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Tom had the amazing ability to relate to many different levels of people.\u00a0 He was president of the medical staff at Central DuPage Hospital\u2014that at the time\u2014had about 800 doctors.\u00a0 He was a general surgeon.\u00a0 He was active in our church.\u00a0 He was a motorcycle driver.\u00a0 He had a semi truck driving license.\u00a0 He just was able to meet a lot of different people in his life, and they all came.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, take me back\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no.\u00a0 Before we go back to how they met, I know some of our listeners are going to want to know this.\u00a0 So, we need to get this right out of the way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, alright.\u00a0 recorded.\u00a0 So, take me back, now, to the 25 years before that memorial service.\u00a0 How did you and Tom meet?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tom and I met at the University of Iowa, and we went to medical school together at the University of Iowa.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was it about him that caught your eye?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, initially, we met\u2014he was a rugby player, and we met and lived in the same dorm.\u00a0 He was a very good looking, athletic man; and I guess, to be honest, that\u2019s what attracted me.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was a hunk.\u00a0 Let\u2019s just get it out here.\u00a0 He\u2019s a hunk; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just glad\u2014I\u2019m glad it was rugby and that you didn\u2019t meet over a cadaver.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s\u2014well, and then, that\u2019s the second part of it.\u00a0 We broke up.\u00a0 Due to a motorcycle accident that I was involved in, he came to visit me in the hospital; and our relationship blossomed again.\u00a0 We, then, started dating over a cadaver in anatomy class in medical school.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, how did he propose?\u00a0 How does a medical school student, a guy who is going to become a surgeon, propose to a future pediatrician?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is one of the most beautiful things.\u00a0 He\u2014we had gone to church together.\u00a0 We came home after church on a Sunday, and we would have devotions together.\u00a0 We were sitting on the couch, and we were reading Proverbs 31.\u00a0 Not sure exactly\u2014at that time, I wasn\u2019t sure why we were reading about Proverbs 31; but as he closed the Bible, it had my married name\u2014I guess he was pretty confident\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That you were going to say, \u201cYes\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014engraved on the Bible, and he asked\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019d already\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019d already engraved my name on the Bible and asked if I would marry him.\u00a0 That was our first devotion out of my Bible that I still use.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s pretty cool.\u00a0 So, you started your marriage, then.\u00a0 I mean what a\u2014med school\u2014that\u2019s pretty tough\u2014all the way through residency\u2014all those years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A surgeon married to a pediatrician with competing hours, but you did find time to have children; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 We did\u2014not the most opportune time.\u00a0 I had my first child in my third year of residency, and that was very difficult.\u00a0 I was on call, and he was on call every third night.\u00a0 So, we would be together every third night.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a hard time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Take us to the first indication\u2014and this was two-plus decades later\u2014the first indication that there was something physical that Tom had.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Tom and I were due to turn 50 and celebrate our 25<sup>th<\/sup> wedding anniversary.\u00a0 We had made plans to take our family, over Christmas break, to Hawaii to celebrate those milestones; but before that, in the fall, Tom, who was involved in a medical strategic networking, had been asked to come to Cuba to train medical students how to preach the Gospel and to really pray with their patients.\u00a0 <br><br>He had just come back from Cuba and was slightly hoarse.\u00a0 It was approximately six weeks before we were to leave for Hawaii, and he was having some hoarseness and some trouble swallowing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t think anything about it at the time; did you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 We did not because he used an inhaler for asthma at times, and they felt it was vocal cord inflammation from the inhaler.\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, how long before there were symptoms that drove you to further exploration?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 While we were in Hawaii, he stopped eating things that were difficult to swallow.\u00a0 When we got back on New Year\u2019s Eve, he went into the hospital to do an emergency appendicitis on a patient.\u00a0 While he was there, taking off his scrubs, he noticed a lump in his throat.\u00a0 From that moment on, it was a whirlwind.\u00a0 He had a CAT scan done, saw a surgeon, and four and half months later died.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The diagnosis\u2014that came from that CAT scan and that initial surgery\u2014take us to when you got that news\u2014when he got that news.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 The night he came home from doing the surgery\u2014he came home; and he said, \u201cRhonda, look.\u201d\u00a0 He showed me the lump in his throat.\u00a0 We were afraid, but the radiologist had felt it was just an enlarged thyroid that maybe had cancer in it.\u00a0 They elected to operate a few days later, and the surgeon immediately found it wasn\u2019t just a simple thyroid cancer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, how did you hear that news?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 The surgeon called me into the waiting room, and they told me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Two doctors who get the news you got\u2014you kind of know\u2014you\u2019ve been around the block a few times.\u00a0 You know, you hope for the best, you pray for the best; but you know what the odds are.\u00a0 How did you walk those next four months of life?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Day by day\u2014minute by minute.\u00a0 It\u2019s really\u2014when you go through something like that, you can\u2019t look ahead.\u00a0 It\u2019s too frightening, and each day is a blessing.\u00a0 If you read about this kind of cancer my husband had, there were only about six cases ever described\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and nobody, anywhere in the country, knew how to take care of it.\u00a0 Nothing worked on this type of cancer, and it\u2019s still totally untreatable.\u00a0 So, reading the literature, hearing the doctors\u2014his oncologist said, \u201cIt\u2019s not a good prognosis; but I can promise you this\u2014I\u2019m going to walk with you all along the way, and I\u2019m going to throw the kitchen sink at you.\u201d\u00a0 And they did\u2014maximal amounts of radiation, every chemotherapy drug that we could try.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if you look at all of that, you know the odds are not favorable; but we continued to really pray. We would use\u2014our church home was a tremendous support to us and just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rhonda, you started your relationship in Proverbs 31\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014with a Bible.\u00a0 It was not merely symbolic.\u00a0 You and Tom shared a vibrant faith.\u00a0 How did your faith sustain you two through that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sorry.\u00a0 [Crying]\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t expecting that.\u00a0 Well, my husband was a very godly man, and he never faltered.\u00a0 He was in the Word every day.\u00a0 Rob came over frequently\u2014and as friends and our pastor, he constantly looked to Rob, as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou cannot go through anything like this if you don\u2019t believe that what you\u2019re going through is God\u2019s sovereign will.\u00a0 The only way that you can move that foot in front of the other is to know there\u2019s light at the end of the tunnel, and there\u2019s a way out, and that we aren\u2019t\u2014and we both truly believed that we are not home and that if God was calling him home, He was calling him home.\u00a0 We were okay with that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There came a point, in your fight together, where you looked and you said, \u201cWe fought the good fight.\u00a0 Now, it\u2019s time to say, \u2018Goodbye.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 How long was the goodbye period?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 There were two times that I remember clearly saying, \u201cGoodbye.\u201d\u00a0 The first time was before he was going into his final surgery.\u00a0 The throat specialist at Loyola was going to do what was called a commando procedure, as a last ditch effort.\u00a0 The cancer was basically filling up Tom\u2019s neck, and he would suffocate to death.\u00a0 So, they decided to try a surgery to remove everything in his neck.\u00a0 Before he went into surgery, I, at that time, told him I didn\u2019t think I could go on without him.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know how to do life without him, and he assured me I would be fine.\u00a0 He gave me permission to marry again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the hardest time of saying goodbye was when the surgeon, the ear, nose, and throat specialist\u2014they all came and said, \u201cWe\u2019ve never seen a cancer like this.\u00a0 It spread quickly,\u201d and there was nothing more they could do.\u00a0 Tom wanted to keep fighting; and I had to say it was time to come home, and there was nothing more we could do.\u00a0 That\u2019s when, I think, we said our goodbye.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rob, you must have done the service, if he was your best friend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I did.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What do you remember from that memorial service?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Tom was highly-respected and deeply loved.\u00a0 He was a man\u2019s man, and he was a discipler.\u00a0 He had a real passion for taking people on the fringes and rooting them in the Gospel.\u00a0 Whether they were bikers, or carpenters, unemployed, or leading physicians, Tom wanted to be there for them.\u00a0 So, Tom and Rhonda, incidentally, had a stream of people that would live with them for periods of time\u2014that Tom would kind of take in to help\u2014doctors that were in trouble\u2014people like that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>So, there were several of us that shared.\u00a0 There were different people from different aspects of Tom\u2019s life; and then, my responsibility was to point people to the Jesus that Tom so deeply loved and to talk about the hope that was the obvious driver of Tom\u2019s life.\u00a0 That was an incredible privilege for me, and that was a great moment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had no idea, as you preached your friend\u2019s funeral, that the path you had been walking with him and with his widow would be a path you would find yourself on with your wife, a year and a half later?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, actually, Tom died in May of 2005.\u00a0 Then, in August of 2005, my wife was diagnosed with a different kind of cancer, a rare cancer that took the Mayo Clinic a couple of weeks to figure out.\u00a0 It ended up being an internal melanoma that originated in her colon area.\u00a0 That put us on a journey where we battled back and forth for about 11 months.\u00a0 Both Tom and Carol\u2019s cancers were similar in that they were very rare, and extremely aggressive, and very disfiguring.\u00a0 Carol ended up with baseball-sized tumors inside and outside her body; but Carol lived for 11 months and, then, died in August of 2006.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rhonda, do you remember\u2014you were grieving still the loss of your husband when you got the news that Rob\u2019s wife had a tumor.\u00a0 Do you remember what you thought?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 My thoughts were the community\u2019s thoughts: \u201cWhat is going on?\u201d\u00a0 It was very frightening.\u00a0 During that time, our church really rallied, as a community, and prayed a lot over what was happening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, he\u2019s your senior pastor.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s our senior pastor, and he was my pastor.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He cared for so many of you; and now, it was turning around that you needed to care for him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rhonda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there a time when you and Carol said goodbye?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Carol spent the last couple months, Dennis, with a chemo mind\u2014what we call a chemo mind\u2014the effects of the radiation and the strong, strong drugs just took a toll on her; and in addition, the cancer spread to her brain.\u00a0 So, the last month or so, especially, when we would have had some conversations, we were not able to; but we had been saying goodbye, in a bunch of little ways, all along.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>But one of the things I appreciated about the medical staff at MD Anderson Hospital, in Houston, where we were, is they never took away our hope.\u00a0 They never said, \u201cOne more month, and it is over.\u201d\u00a0 So, there was always this sense of which, \u201cMaybe we could find something else,\u201d or, \u201cMaybe she would qualify for a particular protocol.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOthers around us could see that that wasn\u2019t going to work\u2014especially, medical people\u2014but we just kept fighting; and pretty soon, it was gone.\u00a0 We did not have a time to formally say goodbye; but then, after Carol died, I discovered that she had written my four kids and me these wonderful letters.\u00a0 I include a copy of her letter to me in my book.\u00a0 Those were just masterpieces of a wife and a mother\u2019s commitment to her family and her commitment to Christ.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would you mind sharing your favorite part of that letter with our listeners?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 One is when Carol said, \u201cRob, you absolutely have no regrets.\u00a0 You\u2019ve been an amazing husband.\u201d\u00a0 That was kind of her first point.\u00a0 Another major point\u2014and little did we know what God had in store for us\u2014was when Carol gave me permission to remarry.\u00a0 Every couple is different.\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTom and Rhonda talked about that.\u00a0 Carol and I never talked about remarriage, but I got this letter a couple of days after she died.\u00a0 I found it; and she said, \u201cRob, I want to share you with somebody else.\u00a0 You have too much to offer.\u00a0 I believe in you.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want you to do this by yourself.\u00a0 I want to encourage you to remarry.\u201d\u00a0 That was an amazing thing for me to read.\u00a0 It really was stunning.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because of how foresighted she was\u2014how she was\u2014how selfless she was being, how\u2014[Crying]\u2014for so many of us, as Christ-followers, life is about us.\u00a0 Life is about me\u2014this kind of me-ism that is embedded in American evangelicalism.\u00a0 One of the amazing things about Carol\u2014amazing thing about Tom\u2014is life wasn\u2019t about them.\u00a0 That letter was just an incredible picture of that.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The subtitle of your book, <em>Finding Grace in the Depths of Disappointment\u2014<\/em>if you haven\u2019t been living in grace, experiencing grace, knowing the God of all grace\u2014you\u2019re more than likely not going to find it when you run into the type of valley that you two went through.\u00a0 I just appreciate both of you being willing to allow us to journey with you in that and share some of the lessons because I\u2019ve quoted Ecclesiastes, Chapter 7, verse 1, many times here on the broadcast.\u00a0 It just talks about how it is good to go to the house of mourning\u2014to the place where it\u2019s the end of a matter\u2014to the place where there\u2019s death because the living takes it to heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s a message for us today.\u00a0 Where are you in your relationship with God?\u00a0 Are you experiencing the God of all grace?\u00a0 Do you know Him, and are you walking with Him?\u2014because you don\u2019t get ready to meet Him when you come to death\u2019s door.\u00a0 You need to be spending a lifetime doing that.\u00a0 If you miss Him, you\u2019ve missed life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 The point is that God\u2019s sustaining grace is not something that we just reach out and tap into in the midst of the storm.\u00a0 It\u2019s something that you cultivate throughout a lifetime so that it\u2019s there\u2014it\u2019s always there\u2014but the question is, \u201cHave we been learning how to walk in grace, and how to walk by faith, even on the sunny days?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 <br><br>I think your book does a great job of spelling out some of the very practical things that both of you went through as you lost your spouses and, then, how God brought beauty from ashes.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to hear more about that this week.\u00a0 The title of the book is <em>When the Bottom Drops Out<\/em>.\u00a0 We have it in our <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> Resource Center.\u00a0 You can order a copy when you go online at FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 Once again, the website is FamilyLifeToday.com. \u2014the title of the book is <em>When the Bottom Drops Out<\/em>\u2014or you call, toll-free, to request the book.\u00a0 Call 1-800-FL-TODAY, 1-800-358-6329.\u00a0 That\u2019s 1-800- \u201cF\u201d as in family, \u201cL\u201d as in life, and then, the word, \u201cTODAY\u201d.\u00a0 Ask about the book, <em>When the Bottom Drops Out<\/em>, when you get in touch with us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, can I share with you an email we got recently from one of our listeners who said:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just wrote to tell you what a blessing your program is to me.\u00a0 When I discovered your program years ago, it was like an answer to prayer.\u00a0 You have consistently kept your focus on the family and been careful not to place your political views before family issues\u2014and I want to thank you for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m making a commitment to be a blessing to your ministry this year.\u00a0 Now, our finances have been extremely difficult over the past decade;
