establish in your home is going to be more significant and more important in the days ahead than what the culture outside your home is trying to press on you.\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk more about that today.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition.\u00a0 I see you brought the stone tablets back into the studio with you today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, Bob, Bob, I made it real clear\u2014this is not the Ten Commandments; okay?\u00a0 But it\u2019s not ten suggestions.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, I use the word urgent very rarely, here on <em>FamilyLife Today;<\/em> but I do have a \u201cState of the Family\u201d address to give to our listeners.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a culture war statement\u2014it\u2019s \u201cTen Urgent Steps\u201d that every family needs to take.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what we\u2019re spending time looking at this week because we need to be thinking shrewdly, purposefully, and intentionally about how we navigate, how we build strong families in a culture where, I think, in some cases, it\u2019s becoming increasingly more difficult to keep your family pointed in the right direction.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have a game plan, the world has one for you.\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It has one for you.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 It\u2019s not a friendly game plan.\u00a0 It will destroy your marriage, your family, and your legacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Already this week, you have taken us through the first five of your \u201cTen Comgestions\u201d\u2014no, \u201cSummandments.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cComgestions\u201d?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was trying to add\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That sounds like I need an antacid or something.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was trying to combine commandment and suggestion.\u00a0 I came up with \u201cComgestions\u201d.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cComgestions\u201d?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What are the five that you\u2019ve already outlined for us?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Again, it\u2019s \u201cTen Urgent Steps for Every Family\u201d.\u00a0 The first five are: Number one, your first step is to kneel down and surrender to Jesus Christ.\u00a0 Secondly, you have to train your family to love others.\u00a0 We\u2019re in the midst of a culture war, and we\u2019re not going to win by yelling and screaming at the other side.\u00a0 Third, we need to become the guardian of marriage.\u00a0 We need to protect it, uphold it, and keep our marriage covenant.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber four, slow down\u2014slow down.\u00a0 I can hear my dad, Hook Rainey, \u201cSlow down, son.\u00a0 Slow down.\u201d\u00a0 Take a step back\u2014evaluate what your schedule is all about and where it\u2019s taking you.\u00a0 Slow down, take a deep breath, and, maybe, make some adjustments.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber five\u2014we talk to men.\u00a0 We need men to step up and man up.\u00a0 By the way, I failed to mention, Bob, when I talked about this\u2014men need to grab hold of this resource, the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video event\u2014and ask if they can host it in their church or their business.\u00a0 It\u2019s Super Saturday, February 2, 2013.\u00a0 There\u2019s going to be thousands of men\u2014tens of thousands of men, I believe\u2014all across the country\u2014meeting together to talk about what it means to be a man.\u00a0 Then, they are going to\u2014I think, they are going to \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, so, we\u2019ve got the one-day event that we\u2019re launching on February 2<sup>nd<\/sup>.\u00a0 Then, there\u2019s the responsibility for the men in your community.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright, back to your list.\u00a0 Number six is where we are?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, alright.\u00a0 As I go through these next five\u2014I want you to listen\u2014to apply just one of them\u2014just pick one of these five for your relationships\u2014if you\u2019re single\u2014or your marriage, or your family.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber six, become proactive, not just reactive.\u00a0 Bob, you\u2019ve done this.\u00a0 You had five children\u2014you and Mary Ann.\u00a0 You know that if you don\u2019t set a course for your marriage and family as you go through the life cycle of a family, the culture is going to put you on your heels, over and over again, around so many different issues, as you put your kid in school, as they go through junior high, high school.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to decide whether you\u2019re going to play offense or just defense.\u00a0\u00a0 Now, even if you have a good offense, doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re not going to have to play defense from time to time; but you need to have a good offense and anticipate the issues that are coming your way, as a family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, if your children are smaller, you have to decide how much is too much, how long is too long, what are your boundaries and your limits.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t know, I promise you it\u2019s going to create problems for you later around games, around music, around Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, etc.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, there are issues as your children move toward puberty.\u00a0 Your children, at the ages of 9, 10, 11, 12, are being taught stuff that you and I were taught in our teenage years.\u00a0 Trust me, in this culture, they are being exposed to all kinds of stuff because of the kids they run around with\u2014even the kids that are in church.\u00a0 There are all kinds of values they are being exposed to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you, as a parent, have to do\u2014you have to keep your ear to the ground, know what\u2019s going on.\u00a0 Then, as a mom and dad, would you please take advantage of what FamilyLife has created for you to combat where the culture is coming after your children to seduce them?\u00a0 Use <em>Passport2Purity<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> to equip your son, your daughter, on a weekend getaway to prepare them for adolescence.\u00a0 I promise you it\u2019ll be one of the best weekends you\u2019ve ever spent with your son or daughter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, what I hearing you say here, in point number six\u2014in step six\u2014is the importance of having a game plan.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was doing the work on the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series, I sat down with Coach Tony Dungy.\u00a0 I asked him\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014what would it be like for a pro coach to head into Sunday and you hadn\u2019t developed a game plan?\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t last one Sunday in the league without a game plan.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cThat\u2019s what you do all week long.\u00a0 You make your plan; and then, you go play the game.\u201d\u00a0 Yet, how many of us, in our marriages and in our families, don\u2019t have a three-year strategic plan\u2014a two-year?\u00a0 We don\u2019t have a one-month\u2014we don\u2019t have a plan for this week.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing, Bob\u2014we\u2019re adults.\u00a0 We know where those young people are headed.\u00a0 There are certain issues they are going to face.\u00a0 We can either be silent and stick our head in the sand or we can be proactive and give our children a leg-up on this thing to be able to head it off at the pass.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The seventh step on your list, really, kind of ties into this sixth one; doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really does, and this is a tough one.\u00a0 Number seven:\u00a0 Refuse to allow the media monster to devour your family.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to predict something here, Bob.\u00a0 I believe, in the next two to three years, we\u2019re going to witness a steeper decline of immorality and perversion being embraced by our culture.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be promoted.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to see all kinds of stuff pumped out in mainstream television and on the internet.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s what I want moms and dads to realize: Don\u2019t expect Google<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, NBC<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, or Disney<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> to help you protect your family.\u00a0 You are the mom; you are the dad; you\u2019re the grandparents.\u00a0 You must guard your family, ruthlessly, from the messages of the media.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because ten years ago, the average person was spending 2.7 hours a week online; today, it\u2019s 18 hours.\u00a0 Did you hear that?\u00a0 Ten years ago, there were zero YouTube videos viewed on a daily basis; today, four billion.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs a result, 62 percent of the girls and 93 percent of the boys are exposed to porn by the age of 18.\u00a0 Did you hear that?\u00a0 Sixty-two percent of your daughters\u2014that\u2019s not somebody else\u2019s, by the way.\u00a0 That\u2019s 93 percent of your sons are exposed by 18.\u00a0 Then, listen to this\u201467 percent of men and 49 percent of women\u2014ages 18-26\u2014now consider viewing porn as acceptable behavior.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, think about the culture right now.\u00a0 Has there ever been at any moment in history where the top three best-sellers on the <em>New York Times<\/em> Best-Seller List were <em>Shades of Grey<\/em>, porn in novel form\u2014top three for months, on end.\u00a0 So, guess what\u2019s coming?\u00a0 Movies, TV shows\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 More of the same.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you, they\u2019re going to popularize what made publishers millions of dollars.\u00a0 They are going to prey upon our children and our grandchildren if we don\u2019t have our hands on the stick.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the point is the media culture is not going to be concerned about the moral character of your children.\u00a0 You better be very concerned about it, and you better have some guardrails in place to protect your family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are the one who must have those guardrails in place to keep your family on the right road.\u00a0 Number seven:\u00a0 Refuse to allow the media monster to devour your family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber eight:\u00a0 Train; train; train.\u00a0 Train your family to think biblically.\u00a0 Second \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTimothy 3:16 is very clear.\u00a0 It says, \u201cAll Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness\u2014\u201d now, listen carefully\u2014this is what you want for your sons and daughters as you raise them\u2014\u201cthat the man of God,\u201d\u2014the woman of God\u2014\u201cmaybe competent, equipped for every good work.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow are they going to be equipped?\u00a0 It\u2019s the Book.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to get them in the Book.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to get the Book in them.\u00a0 The reason this is so important is that life is made up of decisions.\u00a0 Something or someone is going to inform your children on how they go about making those decisions.\u00a0 Don\u2019t you want the truth of God in their soul that is informing them about how to make the right choice?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget, Bob, one of my sons going to school.\u00a0 He had a sack lunch in the back of the class.\u00a0 I think he was in maybe ninth grade.\u00a0 He was eating his lunch over the lunch period at school, and a couple of boys brought a porn magazine.\u00a0 I mean, today, it\u2019s not going to be a magazine; it\u2019s going to be on a screen of some kind.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A smart phone, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, exactly.\u00a0 But I leaned forward as my son told the story and shared what he did.\u00a0 I said, \u201cSo, what did you do?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cWell, I took my sandwich\u2014put it back in the bag.\u00a0 I took my sack lunch and I walked past those guys on out into the hall and found another place to finish my meal.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you something\u2014I went crazy.\u00a0 It was like, \u201cWay to go, son!\u00a0 Way to go!\u00a0 That\u2019s the kind of decision that is going to preserve your soul, over the long haul.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the reality, folks, especially as it values\u2014wanting to make life about money and possessions as being ultimately important\u2014not people, not a godly legacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tConvictions are formed where life and truth collide.\u00a0 If life collides, where there is no truth, we call that compromise; but where life and truth collide, there is the possibility that your son or your daughter will have a conviction to stand firm in the midst of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing I think sons and daughters are facing today.\u00a0 If you hold to a biblical conviction around certain areas of truth, the culture will say to you, \u201cYou\u2019re not kind.\u00a0 You\u2019re not loving.\u00a0 You\u2019re not compassionate.\u00a0 You\u2019re truth is a mean truth.\u201d\u00a0 Nobody wants to be mean.\u00a0 So, the tendency is to say, \u201cOkay, well, I\u2019ll back down.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, back off.\u00a0 And Bob, that\u2019s why my second urgent step\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014was about love.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have to have love as we stand firm on the Scriptures and as we attempt to hold forth the truth of God in the midst of a culture that doesn\u2019t honor God and doesn\u2019t recognize Him as being relevant today.\u00a0 So, back to number eight:\u00a0 Train; train; train your family to think biblically about life, about their choices, about what they\u2019re facing in this culture.\u00a0 You\u2019ll never, never regret it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber nine\u2014and this is pretty simple\u2014pray more, together, with one another\u2014pray for one another, and pray for others.\u00a0 The family was never designed by God to be a holy huddle, where a family kind of huddles up and is self-absorbed on its own issues.\u00a0 We need to have a place where we do that, where we do pray for one another and we hold one another up in prayer; but those prayers need to be turned outward to other people that we know who need God to touch their lives.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Bob, I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve emphasized prayer enough for families.\u00a0 Certainly, we\u2019ve talked to husbands and wives about praying together; but we need to get dads, down on their knees, next to their sons or their daughters\u2019 bed, as they go to sleep in the evening, and put their hands on their hands, and hold their hands and say, \u201cSweetie, could I just pray with you and pray for you?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think there is a tremendous need to cry out today and ask God to protect our children, to give them a sense of mission in life, and to use them in their generation to make a difference because they are the warriors that we\u2019re sending to a time that we will not see.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve talked for years about the need for husbands and wives to pray together regularly.\u00a0 You\u2019re just saying, \u201cLet\u2019s broaden the circle here.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that\u2019d be a good idea.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Number ten, I think\u2014and hear me on this\u2014I think every person\u2014every married couple\u2014and every family needs to be about God\u2019s mission for them.\u00a0 God\u2019s got a plan for your life.\u00a0 He\u2019s got a mission for you to accomplish.\u00a0 So, the question is, \u201cWhat is it?\u201d\u00a0 What do you feel like must be done in this culture?\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 If you nail down what your mission is, then, what are you going to do about it?\u00a0 <br><br>Here\u2019s the thing.\u00a0 When our family was in school, we had a mission to the junior high and the high school.\u00a0 We started a party where we\u2019d sell pizza for a buck, and we lost money on the deal\u2014some of those kids ate lots of slices of pizza!\u2014but we had an outreach.\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting, now 20 years later, it\u2019s still going on\u2014in the junior high and the high school\u2014that we started it.\u00a0 I think our kids got a picture of Mom and Dad weren\u2019t just concerned about them.\u00a0 We were concerned about other people\u2019s kids and wanting to provide a good influence in the lives of others.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf, for instance, you\u2019re passionate about marriages and families, then, let me tell you something\u2014we have got a deal for you.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 <em>The<\/em> <em>Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014folks, let me tell you something.\u00a0 When you one of the finest things out there to make an impact on other people.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s another tool for the guys who are listening.\u00a0 You say, \u201cI\u2019m not into the marriage thing, but I do pound the table about guys needing to be guys\u2014guys needing to be courageous, to step up.\u201d\u00a0 So, we\u2019ve got Super Saturday coming\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Coming up February 2nd\u2014a video event that\u2019s going to challenge men to step up and to embrace their responsibilities as men.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the point you are making here is that you really need to look outside of the walls of your family\u2014and as a family\u2014ask the question, \u201cWhat can we be doing to advance the Kingdom together?\u00a0 How can we put our shoulders together toward advancing the work of God\u2019s Kingdom around the world?\u201d\u00a0 If it is marriage- and family-related, we\u2019ve got tools to help.\u00a0 If it\u2019s something else, other people have got tools to help; but let\u2019s get after it; right?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Ephesians, Chapter 2, verse 10 says, \u201cWe are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, for good works, which He prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.\u201d\u00a0 What that\u2019s saying is, \u201cFolks, He has made you for a purpose.\u00a0 He has something for you to do\u2014for you to be a part of\u2014to reach out and to pierce the darkness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber ten:\u00a0 Every family needs an overall mission.\u00a0 Now, in a moment, I\u2019m going to wrap this whole thing up with a great illustration.\u00a0 You do not want to miss this illustration from a young lady, that we interviewed some time ago, and how her grandmother gave her an image of what a true, godly marriage and family ought to look like, all the way to the finish line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut first, Bob, I just want to turn to our listeners and ask them a very listener, to listen to just a great story that Heidi St. John shared, here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, a few months back, about her grandmother and how her love for her husband gave Heidi an incredible vision for what marriage and family ought to be, all the way to the finish line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 My grandparents spent the last five years of their lives in an assisted living facility.\u00a0 Grandpa had taken a turn for the worst.\u00a0 My grandpa had gone to a phase in the process of dying where he could no longer eat.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t be hydrated anymore.\u00a0 It was so painful for me to watch, as his granddaughter.\u00a0 He just seemed to linger\u2014I remember, at one point, just saying, \u201cLord, please take him home.\u00a0 He just seems like he\u2019s suffering.\u201d\u00a0 It was so hard to watch.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I started wondering if he was waiting for something, and I learned my grandpa was waiting for my grandma.\u00a0 I think that she knew that he was waiting for her.\u00a0 So, the day that he passed away, we brought Grandma over to visit him.\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget because he was just almost nonresponsive, at that point.\u00a0 We lowered the side rails on his bed, and we wheeled Grandma up as close as we could.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, she leaned into him.\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you, it was like there was nobody else in the world\u2014let alone, in that room.\u00a0 She put her hands on his chest, and she put her face next to his face.\u00a0 She cried.\u00a0 Her tears just kind of dropped onto his face; and she said, \u201cDaddy, I love you.\u00a0 I love you.\u00a0 You have been such a good husband\u201d\u2014just affirmed his life.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI know I\u2019ll see you again.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cI know you\u2019ll be waiting for me.\u00a0 I know it won\u2019t be long.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe opened his eyes.\u00a0 I had not seen him really open his eyes in a couple of days\u2014just a tear fell from his eyes.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI love you.\u201d\u00a0 Shortly after that, he went home to be with the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew, in that moment, she was making the choice to prefer him.\u00a0 I know she didn\u2019t want him to go, but she gave him permission to go.\u00a0 She said, \u201cIt\u2019s alright to go.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what she had modeled for us\u2014her whole life\u2014that\u2019s what I had seen her do\u2014was prefer my grandfather.\u00a0 They loved the Lord, and they finished well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber four, slow down\u2014slow down.\u00a0 I can hear my dad, Hook Rainey, \u201cSlow down, son.\u00a0 Slow down.\u201d\u00a0 Take a step back\u2014evaluate what your schedule is all about and where it\u2019s taking you.\u00a0 Slow down, take a deep breath, and, maybe, make some adjustments.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber five\u2014we talk to men.\u00a0 We need men to step up and man up.\u00a0 By the way, I failed to mention, Bob, when I talked about this\u2014men need to grab hold of this resource, the <em>Stepping Up<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> video event\u2014and ask if they can host it in their church or their business.\u00a0 It\u2019s Super Saturday, February 2, 2013.\u00a0 There\u2019s going to be thousands of responsibility for the men in your community.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright, back to your list.\u00a0 Number six is where we are?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, alright.\u00a0 As I go through these next five\u2014I want you to listen\u2014to apply just one of them\u2014just pick one of these five for your relationships\u2014if you\u2019re single\u2014or your marriage, or your family.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber six, become proactive, not just reactive.\u00a0 Bob, you\u2019ve done this.\u00a0 You had five children\u2014you and Mary Ann.\u00a0 You know that if you don\u2019t set a course for your marriage and family as you go through the life cycle of a family, the culture is going to put you on your heels, over and over again, around so many different issues, as you put your kid in school, as they go through junior high, high school.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to decide whether you\u2019re going to play offense or just defense.\u00a0\u00a0 Now, even if you have a good offense, doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re not going to have to play defense from time to time; but you need to have a good offense and anticipate the issues that are coming your way, as a family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, if your children are smaller, you have to decide how much is too much, how long is too long, what are your boundaries and your limits.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t know, I promise you it\u2019s going to create problems for you later around games, around music, around Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, etc.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, there are issues as your children move toward puberty.\u00a0 Your children, at the ages of 9, 10, 11, 12, are being taught stuff that you and I were taught in our teenage years.\u00a0 Trust me, in this culture, they are being exposed to all kinds of stuff because of the kids they run around with\u2014even the kids that are in church.\u00a0 There are all kinds of values they are being exposed to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you, as a parent, have to do\u2014you have to keep your ear to the ground, know what\u2019s going on.\u00a0 Then, as a mom and dad, would you please take advantage of what FamilyLife has created for you to combat where the culture is sat down with Coach Tony Dungy.\u00a0 I asked him\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014what would it be like for a pro coach to head into Sunday and you hadn\u2019t developed a game plan?\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t last one Sunday in the league without a game plan.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cThat\u2019s what you do all week long.\u00a0 You make your plan; and then, you go play the game.\u201d\u00a0 Yet, how many of us, in our marriages and in our families, don\u2019t have a three-year strategic plan\u2014a two-year?\u00a0 We don\u2019t have a one-month\u2014we don\u2019t have a plan for this week.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing, Bob\u2014we\u2019re adults.\u00a0 We know where those young people are headed.\u00a0 There are certain issues they are going to face.\u00a0 We can either be silent and stick our head in the sand or we can be proactive and give our children a leg-up on this thing to be able to head it off at the pass.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The seventh step on your list, really, kind of ties into this sixth one; doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really does, and this is a tough one.\u00a0 Number seven:\u00a0 Refuse to allow the media monster to devour your family.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to predict something here, Bob.\u00a0 I believe, in the next two to three years, we\u2019re going to witness a steeper decline of immorality and perversion being embraced by our culture.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be promoted.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to see all kinds of stuff pumped out in mainstream television and on the internet.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s what I want moms and dads to realize: Don\u2019t expect Google<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, NBC<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, or Disney<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> to help you protect your family.\u00a0 You are the mom; you are the dad; you\u2019re the grandparents.\u00a0 You must guard your family, ruthlessly, from the messages of the media.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because ten years ago, the average person was spending 2.7 hours a week online; today, it\u2019s 18 hours.\u00a0 Did you hear that?\u00a0 Ten years ago, there were zero YouTube videos viewed on a daily basis; today, four billion.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs a result, 62 percent of the girls and 93 percent of the boys are exposed to porn by the age of 18.\u00a0 Did you hear that?\u00a0 Sixty-two percent of your daughters\u2014that\u2019s not somebody else\u2019s, by the way.\u00a0 That\u2019s 93 percent of your sons are exposed by 18.\u00a0 Then, listen to this\u201467 percent of men and 49 percent of women\u2014ages 18-26\u2014now consider viewing porn as acceptable behavior.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, think about the culture right now.\u00a0 Has there ever been at any moment in history where the top three best-sellers on the <em>New York Times<\/em> Best-Seller List were <em>Shades of Grey<\/em>, porn in novel form\u2014top three for months, on end.\u00a0 So, guess what\u2019s coming?\u00a0 Movies, TV shows\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 More of the same.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you, they\u2019re going to popularize what made publishers millions of dollars.\u00a0 They are going to prey upon our children and our grandchildren if we don\u2019t have our hands on the stick.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the point is the media culture is not going to be concerned about the moral character of your children.\u00a0 You better be very concerned about it, and you better have some guardrails in place to protect your family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are the one who must have those guardrails in place to keep your family on the right road.\u00a0 Number seven:\u00a0 Refuse to allow the media monster to devour your family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber eight:\u00a0 Train; train; train.\u00a0 Train your family to think biblically.\u00a0 Second \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTimothy 3:16 is very clear.\u00a0 It says, \u201cAll Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness\u2014\u201d now, listen carefully\u2014this is what you want for your sons and daughters as you raise them\u2014\u201cthat the man of God,\u201d\u2014the woman of God\u2014\u201cmaybe competent, equipped for every good work.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow are they going to be equipped?\u00a0 It\u2019s the Book.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to get them in the Book.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to get the Book in them.\u00a0 The reason this is so important is that life is made up of decisions.\u00a0 Something or someone is going to inform your children on how they go about making those decisions.\u00a0 Don\u2019t you want the truth of God in their soul that is informing them about how to make the right choice?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget, Bob, one of my sons going to school.\u00a0 He had a sack lunch in the back of the class.\u00a0 I think he was in maybe ninth grade.\u00a0 He was eating his lunch over the lunch period at school, and a couple of boys brought a porn magazine.\u00a0 I mean, today, it\u2019s not going to be a magazine; it\u2019s going to be on a screen of some kind.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A smart phone, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, exactly.\u00a0 But I leaned forward as my son told the story and shared what he did.\u00a0 I said, \u201cSo, what did you do?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cWell, I took my sandwich\u2014put it back in the bag.\u00a0 I took my sack lunch and I walked past those guys on out into the hall and found another place to finish my meal.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you something\u2014I went crazy.\u00a0 It was like, \u201cWay to go, son!\u00a0 Way to go!\u00a0 That\u2019s the kind of decision that is going to preserve your soul, over the long haul.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the reality, folks, especially as it relates to our children.\u00a0 The culture is creating a battleground around which they are redefining marriage.\u00a0 They are reshaping morality and what is right and wrong.\u00a0 They are recasting values\u2014wanting to make life about money and possessions as being ultimately important\u2014not people, not a godly legacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tConvictions are formed where life and truth collide.\u00a0 If life collides, where there is no truth, we call that compromise; but where life and truth collide, there is the possibility that your son or your daughter will have a conviction to stand firm in the midst of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing I think sons and daughters are facing today.\u00a0 If you hold to a biblical conviction around certain areas of truth, the culture will say to you, \u201cYou\u2019re not kind.\u00a0 You\u2019re not loving.\u00a0 You\u2019re not compassionate.\u00a0 You\u2019re truth is a mean truth.\u201d\u00a0 Nobody wants to be mean.\u00a0 So, the tendency is to say, \u201cOkay, well, I\u2019ll back down.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, back off.\u00a0 And Bob, that\u2019s why my second urgent step\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014was about love.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have to have love as we stand firm on the Scriptures and as we attempt to hold forth the truth of God in the midst of a culture that doesn\u2019t honor God and doesn\u2019t recognize Him as being relevant today.\u00a0 So, back to number eight:\u00a0 Train; train; train your family to think biblically about life, about their choices, about what they\u2019re facing in this culture.\u00a0 You\u2019ll never, never regret it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber nine\u2014and this is pretty simple\u2014pray more, together, with one another\u2014pray for one another, and pray for others.\u00a0 The family was never designed by God to be a holy huddle, where a family kind of huddles up and is self-absorbed on its own issues.\u00a0 We need to have a place where we do that, where we do pray for one another and we hold one another up in prayer; but those prayers need to be turned outward to other people that we know who need God to touch their lives.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Bob, I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve emphasized prayer enough for families.\u00a0 Certainly, we\u2019ve talked to husbands and wives about praying together; but we need to get dads, down on their knees, next to their sons or their daughters\u2019 bed, as they go to sleep in the evening, and put their hands on their hands, and hold their hands and say, \u201cSweetie, could I just pray with you and pray for you?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think there is a tremendous need to cry out today and ask God to protect our children, to give them a sense of mission in life, and to use them in their generation to make a difference because they are the warriors that we\u2019re sending to a time that we will not see.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve talked for years about the need for husbands and wives to pray together regularly.\u00a0 You\u2019re just saying, \u201cLet\u2019s broaden the circle here.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that\u2019d be a good idea.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Number ten, I think\u2014and hear me on this\u2014I think every person\u2014every married couple\u2014and every family needs to be about God\u2019s mission for them.\u00a0 God\u2019s got a plan for your life.\u00a0 He\u2019s got a mission for you to accomplish.\u00a0 So, the question is, \u201cWhat is it?\u201d\u00a0 What do you feel like must be done in this culture?\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 If you nail down what your mission is, then, what are you going to do about it?\u00a0 <br><br>Here\u2019s the thing.\u00a0 When our family was in school, we had a mission to the junior high and the high school.\u00a0 We started a party where we\u2019d sell pizza for a buck, and we lost money on the deal\u2014some of those kids ate lots of slices of pizza!\u2014but we had an outreach.\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting, now 20 years later, it\u2019s still going on\u2014in the junior high and the high school\u2014that we started it.\u00a0 I think our kids got a picture of Mom and Dad weren\u2019t just concerned about them.\u00a0 We were concerned about other people\u2019s kids and wanting to provide a good influence in the lives of others.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf, for instance, you\u2019re passionate about marriages and families, then, one of the finest things out there to make an impact on other people.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s another tool for the guys who are listening.\u00a0 You say, \u201cI\u2019m not into the marriage thing, but I do pound the table about guys needing to be guys\u2014guys needing to be courageous, to step up.\u201d\u00a0 So, we\u2019ve got Super Saturday coming\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Coming up February 2nd\u2014a video event that\u2019s going to challenge men to step up and to embrace their responsibilities as men.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the point you are making here is that you really need to look outside of the walls of your family\u2014and as a family\u2014ask the question, \u201cWhat can we be doing to advance the Kingdom together?\u00a0 How can we put our shoulders together toward advancing the work of God\u2019s Kingdom around the world?\u201d\u00a0 If it is marriage- and family-related, we\u2019ve got tools to help.\u00a0 If it\u2019s something else, other people have got tools to help; but let\u2019s get after it; right?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Ephesians, Chapter 2, verse 10 says, \u201cWe are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, for good works, which He prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.\u201d\u00a0 What that\u2019s saying is, \u201cFolks, He has made you for a purpose.\u00a0 He has something for you to do\u2014for you to be a part of\u2014to reach out and to pierce the darkness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber ten:\u00a0 Every family needs an overall mission.\u00a0 Now, in a moment, I\u2019m going to wrap this whole thing up with a great illustration.\u00a0 You do not want to miss this illustration from a young lady, that we interviewed some time ago, and how her grandmother gave her an image of what a true, godly marriage and family ought to look like, all the way to the finish line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut first, Bob, I just want to turn to our listeners and ask them a very incredible vision for what marriage and family ought to be, all the way to the finish line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 My grandparents spent the last five years of their lives in an assisted living facility.\u00a0 Grandpa had taken a turn for the worst.\u00a0 My grandpa had gone to a phase in the process of dying where he could no longer eat.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t be hydrated anymore.\u00a0 It was so painful for me to watch, as his granddaughter.\u00a0 He just seemed to linger\u2014I remember, at one point, just saying, \u201cLord, please take him home.\u00a0 He just seems like he\u2019s suffering.\u201d\u00a0 It was so hard to watch.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I started wondering if he was waiting for something, and I learned my grandpa was waiting for my grandma.\u00a0 I think that she knew that he was waiting for her.\u00a0 So, the day that he passed away, we brought Grandma over to visit him.\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget because he was just almost nonresponsive, at that point.\u00a0 We lowered the side rails on his bed, and we wheeled Grandma up as close as we could.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, she leaned into him.\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you, it was like there was nobody else in the world\u2014let alone, in that room.\u00a0 She put her hands on his chest, and she put her face next to his face.\u00a0 She cried.\u00a0 Her tears just kind of dropped onto his face; and she said, \u201cDaddy, I love you.\u00a0 I love you.\u00a0 You have been such a good husband\u201d\u2014just affirmed his life.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI know I\u2019ll see you again.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cI know you\u2019ll be waiting for me.\u00a0 I know it won\u2019t be long.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe opened his eyes.\u00a0 I had not seen him really open his eyes in a couple of days\u2014just a tear fell from his eyes.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI love you.\u201d\u00a0 Shortly after that, he went home to be with the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew, in that moment, she was making the choice to prefer him.\u00a0 I know she didn\u2019t want him to go, but she gave him permission to go.\u00a0 She said, \u201cIt\u2019s alright to go.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what she had modeled for us\u2014her whole life\u2014that\u2019s what I had seen her do\u2014was prefer my grandfather.\u00a0 They loved the Lord, and they finished well.\u00a0
