but secondly, the temptation for you and me to look down our noses at other people, and judge them, and think, \u201cHow broken are you?\u201d\u00a0 Well, we\u2019re expecting people who don\u2019t know Christ to behave as though they do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, December 10<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 What does it look like for us to learn how to live as missionaries, more and more, in our own communities?\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about that today.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition.\u00a0 So, no guest; you didn\u2019t bring a guest in here today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I didn\u2019t.\u00a0 I\u2019m taking over!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 You have a few things you want to talk about today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have some things on my heart and chest that I want to share with our listeners because I think we\u2019re living in an urgent day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It does feel like the culture is shifting a little bit; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It does.\u00a0 And Bob, here\u2019s what I decided to do today.\u00a0 I guess you could consider this a \u201cState of the Family\u201d address.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it\u2019s not going to be this fire-breathing, flame-throwing, standing on top of the mountain\u2014shouting and yelling at everybody about what\u2019s happening in the culture.\u00a0 That\u2019s never been our approach, here on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\u00a0 We\u2019ve always been about helping individuals, marriages, and families push back against the culture and live it out\u2014where life is hammered out in their own marriages and their own communities.\u00a0 So, I just have some things\u2014they\u2019re not the Ten Commandments; okay?\u00a0 They\u2019re not the Ten Commandments, but they\u2019re not ten suggestions either.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 These are more than coaching tips that you\u2019re giving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No doubt.\u00a0 I mean, it really is game time.\u00a0 I know this is Christmas and it\u2019s all filled with warm fuzzies and everything; We want to make sure our family remains strong in the culture we\u2019re in today.\u201d \u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you, your marriage is taking place on a spiritual battlefield, not on a romantic balcony.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 These are non-negotiables.\u00a0 These steps are absolutely essential if you\u2019re not going to be a casualty in what\u2019s taking place in marriage and family today.\u00a0 As you listen to these first five\u2014I\u2019m going to attempt to give you five today.\u00a0 As you listen to these five, try to grab one that you think you and your spouse, you and your family, you and your extended family need to apply today or in the coming days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst one\u2014Number one:\u00a0 The first step is not a step up.\u00a0 It\u2019s a step down.\u00a0 The first step is that you need to kneel down and surrender to the King of kings and the Lord of lords.\u00a0 I have a passage in my Bible that has one of my mentors\u2019 names by it.\u00a0 It says, \u201cBill Bright\u2019s life verse.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s Galatians, Chapter 2, verse 20\u2014this was Bill\u2019s favorite verse.\u00a0 \u201cI have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself up for me.\u201d\u00a0 That passage of Scripture is calling us to die\u2014to give up ourselves\u2014and to yield to the only One who can help you defeat your selfishness\u2014day-in and day-out\u2014Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can I tell you what helped unlock that verse for me in my thinking?\u00a0 I remember reading it years ago and thinking, \u201cWhat does that mean?\u00a0 \u2018I\u2019ve been crucified.\u2019\u00a0 Well, I haven\u2019t been crucified.\u201d\u00a0 I was just trying to get my head around that verse.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomebody suggested, where you see the word, \u201cI\u201d, there at the beginning\u2014just put in the word, \u201cself.\u201d\u00a0 Self is crucified with Christ; therefore, self no longer lives.\u00a0 Jesus Christ now lives in me; \u201cand the life I live, I live by faith in the Son...\u201d That helped because it helped me understand what we\u2019re really saying is, \u201cMy priorities are going to be different, going forward.\u00a0 Instead of self-directed priorities, it\u2019s going to be Christ-directed priorities.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 And that\u2019s the hope of the home.\u00a0 That\u2019s the hope of a family\u2014that two individuals, a husband and a wife, would yield to Him.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 If self dies, between a husband and a wife, they have a chance of making it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a good thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Christianity is, first and foremost, a relationship with the One who defeated death\u2014Jesus Christ\u2014and it begins with surrender to Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s interesting, Bob, here in December, that I\u2019d be giving this message because it was 40 years ago that Barbara and I started out our marriage and we had our first Christmas together.\u00a0 Before we gave one another any presents on that first Christmas, back in 1972, we both gave Jesus Christ everything about us\u2014our lives, our desire for possessions, for children, some of the things we valued\u2014which were really silly, at the time, looking back on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You did this in a tangible way.\u00a0 You guys actually wrote it down and signed it over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wrote out a contract, a \u201cTitle Deed\u201d to our Lives.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to tell you something.\u00a0 That was determinative in what our marriage has become and what our family has become.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo, it does not mean we have the perfect marriage.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve listened to <em>FamilyLife Today, <\/em>you\u2019ve heard many of my idiotic choices that I\u2019ve made here\u2014and the selfishness that I still have\u2014unfortunately, who tries to get off the cross\u2014as you talked about\u2014who wants to live out his own life.\u00a0 But you know what?\u00a0 That commitment changed the course of our lives.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf Jesus Christ is who He claimed to be\u2014if He is the King of kings, Lord of lords, God Incarnate, which is what we celebrate, here at Christmas\u2014then He demands our absolute surrender and obedience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We do not live in a culture that promotes selflessness.\u00a0 In fact, it promotes just the opposite; but you\u2019re not simply talking about dying to self, as noble as that might be.\u00a0 You have to take the next step and live for Christ because, if you\u2019re going to die to self, something else is going to direct your life; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The cool thing about this is\u2014the Bible tells us once we have committed our lives to Christ, He comes to indwell us.\u00a0 Spiritually-speaking, He lives His life in and through us, if we surrender to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright.\u00a0 So step one, in this culture\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kneel down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kneel down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Surrender.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Die to self.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Give up!\u00a0 Some of you\u2019ve been battling it too long.\u00a0 Give up!\u00a0 Put your hands out like you\u2019re going to prison because\u2014you know what? \u2014if you\u2019re a bond slave of Christ, it\u2019ll pay off over the long haul.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it\u2019s not something that you do once and then it\u2019s done.\u00a0 It\u2019s something you do over and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, oh I wish it was, Bob.\u00a0 I just wish it was, but you know what?\u00a0 That surrender has to be done every day, moment by moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber two\u2014now, this is really important as we march forward in this culture.\u00a0 Train your family to love others.\u00a0 I purposely put this number two because it would be so easy to make this number eight, number nine\u2014somewhere down on the list\u2014but some of the things I\u2019m going to talk about here are going to demand that we, not only exemplify the love of Christ, but we train our children to have that attitude in them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s going to become increasingly difficult to be a married couple, standing on the Scriptures\u2014to be a pair of parents, or a single parent, trying to hold to the Bible and the teachings of Scripture, in this culture.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be difficult in two ways:\u00a0 People are going to want to throw rocks at you.\u00a0 So, they\u2019re going to come after you.\u00a0 But secondly, the temptation for you and me to look down our noses at other people, and judge them, and think, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you clean up your act?\u00a0 I mean, good night!\u00a0 How broken are you?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re expecting people, who don\u2019t know Christ, to behave as though they do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why would we judge them?\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly the same way I\u2019d be behaving if Christ didn\u2019t live in me.\u00a0 We aren\u2019t going to win the day by yelling, and screaming, and turning up the emotional intensity of our arguments in this culture.\u00a0 We are going to win the day, not by finger-pointing; but we\u2019re going to win the day by becoming Christ-like as we love broken people and offer them\u2014offer them and say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 This is where you find life.\u00a0 This is where you can find reality.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst Corinthians 13 talks about faith, hope, and love.\u00a0 It says the greatest of these\u2014the greatest of those three:\u00a0 faith, hope, and love\u2014is love.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because love can conquer even a hardened heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s a place where I had to do a little adjusting on my own because, again, when you look at media\u2014and particularly news media today\u2014turning up the volume and shouting has become the way to win ratings and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s entertainment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and you watch it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and you can become like it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you get sucked right into it.\u00a0 Yet, there is a fundamental self-righteousness that comes with that\u2014that is, again, natural, I think, to all of us.\u00a0 It feeds something inside of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Only to you, Bob.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Not me.\u00a0 Are you kidding me?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have to remember, all of us, that what we see in others is equally true about us.\u00a0 We\u2019re all sinners.\u00a0 We\u2019re all at the same place, at the foot of the cross, in need of the same salvation.\u00a0 The person you\u2019re looking at and going, \u201cHow could that person think that\u2014be that way?\u00a0 How can they live that way?\u201d\u00a0 Listen, you\u2019re a lot closer to them than you are to the perfect example of Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 Don\u2019t miss this nuance of this one\u2014training your family to love others.\u00a0 Your little unit needs to be an incubator where you birth real love that pierces the darkness of the culture.\u00a0 That means your kids need to catch from you how to do it\u2014that they need to be taught from you how to do.\u00a0 You do that by getting in the Book.\u00a0 You read about Jesus, and how He handled those who persecuted Him and who wanted to put Him to death, and you attempt to love them as He did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jesus is a better role model here than some of the anchors on TV; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that\u2019s accurate.\u00a0 Number two:\u00a0 Train your family to love others.\u00a0 Number three:\u00a0 Become a guardian of marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not just your marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, and in fact, here\u2019s what I want our listeners to catch.\u00a0 I believe the real hope for marriage and family, long haul, is in our listeners\u2019 homes.\u00a0 I believe a grass roots spiritual awakening that protects the marriage covenant\u2014that also looks out for other people and their marriages\u2014is going to be the way we express the love of Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I want to talk about two ways you can be a guardian of marriage.\u00a0 Number one:\u00a0 Guard and protect the definition of marriage.\u00a0 Back in 1991, FamilyLife wrote a document called \u201cThe Family Manifesto\u201d.\u00a0 In it\u2014it seemed a stretch\u2014but in \u201cThe Family Manifesto\u201d, we defined marriage between a man and a woman and their God for a lifetime, never between two people of the same sex.\u00a0 Now, today, as we know, that definition is coming under fire.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to increasingly come under fire, but we must not be silent.\u00a0 We must speak up and defend marriage, in a loving way.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I had love as number two.\u00a0 We need to graciously speak up and say, \u201cNo, man didn\u2019t design marriage.\u00a0 God did.\u201d\u00a0 What God designed, we need to be careful that we don\u2019t redefine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA second way you can be the guardian of marriage, though, is by keeping your marriage covenant and calling others to do the same.\u00a0 I was recently with a guy who went to <em>I Still Do\u2122.<\/em>\u00a0 Bob, do you remember <em>I Still Do<\/em>?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We used to hold events, around the country, as we celebrated the marriage covenant.\u00a0 Well, this young man and his wife came and brought another couple from their town to <em>I Still Do<\/em> in Memphis.\u00a0 Both couples got the marriage covenant that we passed out, at the end of that event.\u00a0 They went home and signed it\u2014had their kids witness it.\u00a0 They framed it, put it up on the wall\u2014I believe in their bedroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA few years passed.\u00a0 My friend said, \u201cI heard that the other couple that went with us to Memphis\u2014to <em>I Still Do<\/em>\u2014were in trouble and they were getting a divorce.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI went home after work. I took the marriage covenant off of our wall and went down to this guy\u2019s office.\u201d\u00a0 He was a doctor.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI took that covenant in there and said, \u2018I\u2019m here to help you make good on your marriage covenant.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 I wish I could tell you that that turned him around.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t, but you know what?\u00a0 If more of that occurred, on behalf of other people\u2019s covenants, we wouldn\u2019t see the divorce rate what it is today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We need to care about our own covenant; but also, be looking out for other people\u2019s marriage covenant.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 Number three: Become a guardian of marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber four is pretty simple, but it\u2019s pretty radical.\u00a0 Slow down.\u00a0 Slow down.\u00a0 Take a step back\u2014evaluate your schedule and where it\u2019s taking you, your marriage and your family\u2014and pull back and take a look at the pace of life\u2014how you compare your schedule and all the things your family is doing with other families\u2014and all the fatigue that it is producing, and all the increased schedule.\u00a0 It even makes me tired to think about it, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you remember the mom we talked to this year who had done the radical sabbatical for her family\u2014where they pared off all kinds of things?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about taking that kind of a look at your schedule.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am.\u00a0 Ephesians 5 talks about being wise about the days because they are evil.\u00a0 Bob, I think this is one of the most important things couples need to be considering today because the pace of life can set you up for an affair.\u00a0 It can set you up to turn against your spouse, and it can also result in no longer investing in your marriage.\u00a0 You\u2019re so busy, you don\u2019t have time for one another, and creating romance, and healthy conversations, where you get a chance to listen and connect with each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about being purposeful and intentional about the things that really matter because the culture will try to tell you, \u201cHere\u2019s what really matters.\u201d\u00a0 We have to weigh that out against what the Scriptures say really matters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 Number five\u2014this is to men.\u00a0 Listen carefully, guys.\u00a0 Man up and step up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I knew this was going to be on the top ten somewhere.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Focus on becoming, not just any man, but a <em>courageous<\/em> man.\u00a0 I want you to listen to me carefully.\u00a0 This culture is trying to dis-courage you.\u00a0 It is trying to remove courage from your chest.\u00a0 It wants to rob you of your courage; but there isn\u2019t a man listening, Bob, who wants to be known as a coward.\u00a0 We don\u2019t talk much about cowardice anymore.\u00a0 We should.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was recently with a group of men, about 15 men at a getaway, and we talked about why it\u2019s so easy for men to be passive.\u00a0 We came up with all kinds of reasons\u2014afraid of failing, we are lazy, and we don\u2019t know how\u2014so, the easiest thing to do is nothing.\u00a0 We let our wives do it.\u00a0 So, we talked about, \u201cWhat should we do?\u201d\u00a0 We watched the new <em>Stepping Up\u2122<\/em> video series that we just finished, which is a small group video series for men\u2019s groups.\u00a0 We got through eight of the ten in about four days.\u00a0 As a result\u2014I\u2019ve got a feeling, Bob\u2014there were about 15 wives, scattered all over the country, who had men come home from that retreat that probably surprised them.\u00a0 It was like, \u201cWhat happened to my husband?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat happened to my husband?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want our listeners to know\u2014the battle today for the family begins with how men behave.\u00a0 I want to show you how powerful an illustration can be of a man who behaves well by letting you listen to a clip from a <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> broadcast\u2014I don\u2019t know, how many years ago? \u2014maybe\u2014six, eight, or ten years ago.\u00a0 R.V. Brown came into the studio.\u00a0 You know, Bob.\u00a0 He was one of 17 children.\u00a0 I asked him to give a tribute to his dad.\u00a0 He called his dad Willie Fish.\u00a0 Let\u2019s listen to that of all, for loving my Mama, and then secondly, for loving me, and kissing me, and rubbing my little round head, and telling me to go to school, and everything was going to be okay.\u00a0 And then, Dad, I want to thank you for taking me fishing\u2014July the 6<sup>th<\/sup>, 1959, for the first time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd Dad, I want to just tell you what an awesome leader you was.\u00a0 With no education, Dad, you taught me.\u00a0 You educated me how to love.\u00a0 Dad, thank you!\u00a0 I\u2019m the kind of man I am today because of who you are.\u00a0 Thank you for loving Mama.\u00a0 Thank you for the leadership and authority in which you raised us.\u00a0 Thank you for the discipline; and most of all, father, I want to thank you for that hug and that kiss, and that little rub on my little, round head, and you\u2019d say, \u201cYou\u2019re going to be okay, son.\u201d\u00a0 Dad, I love you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio] fire-breathing, flame-throwing, standing on top of the mountain\u2014shouting and yelling at everybody about what\u2019s happening in the culture.\u00a0 That\u2019s never been our approach, here on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\u00a0 We\u2019ve always been about helping individuals, marriages, and families push back against the culture and live it out\u2014where life is hammered out in their own marriages and their own communities.\u00a0 So, I just have some things\u2014they\u2019re not the Ten Commandments; okay?\u00a0 They\u2019re not the Ten Commandments, but they\u2019re not ten are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, let\u2019s get to the \u201cTen Urgent Steps\u201d.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re calling them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m into steps these days.\u00a0 I\u2019m into steps.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Something about stepping up.\u00a0 And this is the kind of thing that, if a young couple came to you and said, \u201cWe\u2019re just starting out our marriage. We want to make sure our family remains strong in the culture we\u2019re in today.\u201d \u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you, your marriage is taking place on a spiritual battlefield, not on a romantic balcony.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 These are non-negotiables.\u00a0 These steps are absolutely essential if you\u2019re not going to be a casualty in what\u2019s taking place in marriage and family today.\u00a0 As you listen to these first five\u2014I\u2019m going to attempt to give you five today.\u00a0 As you listen to these five, try to grab one that you think you and your spouse, you and your family, you and your extended family need to apply today or in the coming days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst one\u2014Number one:\u00a0 The first step is not a step up.\u00a0 It\u2019s a step down.\u00a0 The first step is that you need to kneel down and surrender to the King of kings and the Lord of lords.\u00a0 I have a passage in my Bible that has one of my mentors\u2019 names by it.\u00a0 It says, \u201cBill Bright\u2019s life verse.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s Galatians, Chapter 2, verse 20\u2014this was Bill\u2019s favorite verse.\u00a0 \u201cI have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself up for me.\u201d\u00a0 That passage of Scripture is calling us to die\u2014to give up ourselves\u2014and to yield to the only One who can help you defeat your selfishness\u2014day-in and day-out\u2014Jesus Christ. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can I tell you what helped unlock that verse for me in my thinking?\u00a0 I remember reading it years ago and thinking, \u201cWhat does that mean?\u00a0 \u2018I\u2019ve been crucified.\u2019\u00a0 Well, I haven\u2019t been crucified.\u201d\u00a0 I was just trying to get my head around that verse.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSomebody suggested, where you see the word, \u201cI\u201d, there at the beginning\u2014just put in the word, \u201cself.\u201d\u00a0 Self is crucified with Christ; therefore, self no longer lives.\u00a0 Jesus Christ now lives in me; \u201cand the life I live, I live by faith in the Son...\u201d That helped because it helped me understand what we\u2019re really saying is, \u201cMy priorities are going to be different, going forward.\u00a0 Instead of self-directed priorities, it\u2019s going to be Christ-directed priorities.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 And that\u2019s the hope of the home.\u00a0 That\u2019s the hope of a family\u2014that two individuals, a husband and a wife, would yield to Him.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 If self dies, between a husband and a wife, they have a chance of making it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a good thing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Christianity is, first and foremost, a relationship with the One who defeated death\u2014Jesus Christ\u2014and it begins with surrender to Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s interesting, Bob, here in December, that I\u2019d be giving this message because it was 40 years ago that Barbara and I started out our marriage and we had our first Christmas together.\u00a0 Before we gave one another any presents on that first Christmas, back in 1972, we both gave Jesus Christ everything about us\u2014our lives, our desire for possessions, for children, some of the things we valued\u2014which were really silly, at the time, looking back on it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You did this in a tangible way.\u00a0 You guys actually wrote it down and signed it over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wrote out a contract, a \u201cTitle Deed\u201d to our Lives.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to tell you something.\u00a0 That was determinative in what our marriage has become and what our family has become.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo, it does not mean we have the perfect marriage.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve listened to <em>FamilyLife Today, <\/em>you\u2019ve heard many of my idiotic choices that I\u2019ve made here\u2014and the selfishness that I still have\u2014unfortunately, who tries to get off the cross\u2014as you talked about\u2014who wants to live out his own life.\u00a0 But you know what?\u00a0 That commitment changed the course of our lives.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf Jesus Christ is who He claimed to be\u2014if He is the King of kings, Lord of lords, God Incarnate, which is what we celebrate, here at Christmas\u2014then He demands our absolute surrender and obedience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We do not live in a culture that promotes selflessness.\u00a0 In fact, it promotes just the opposite; but you\u2019re not simply talking about dying to self, as noble as that might be.\u00a0 You have to take the next step and live for Christ because, if you\u2019re going to die to self, something else is going to direct your life; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The cool thing about this is\u2014the Bible tells us once we have committed our lives to Christ, He comes to indwell us.\u00a0 Spiritually-speaking, He lives His life in and through us, if we surrender to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright.\u00a0 So step one, in this culture\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kneel down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kneel down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Surrender.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Die to self.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Give up!\u00a0 Some of you\u2019ve been battling it too long.\u00a0 Give up!\u00a0 Put your hands out like you\u2019re going to prison because\u2014you know what? \u2014if you\u2019re a bond slave of Christ, it\u2019ll pay off over the long haul.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it\u2019s not something that you do once and then it\u2019s done.\u00a0 It\u2019s something you do over and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, oh I wish it was, Bob.\u00a0 I just wish it was, but you know what?\u00a0 That surrender has to be done every day, moment by moment. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber two\u2014now, this is really important as we march forward in this culture.\u00a0 Train your family to love others.\u00a0 I purposely put this number two because it would be so easy to make this number eight, number nine\u2014somewhere down on the list\u2014but some of the things I\u2019m going to talk about here are going to demand that we, not only exemplify the love of Christ, but we train our children to have that attitude in them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s going to become increasingly difficult to be a married couple, standing on the Scriptures\u2014to be a pair of parents, or a single parent, trying to hold to the Bible and the teachings of Scripture, in this culture.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be difficult in two ways:\u00a0 People are going to want to throw rocks at you.\u00a0 So, they\u2019re going to come after you.\u00a0 But secondly, the temptation for you and me to look down our noses at other people, and judge them, and think, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you clean up your act?\u00a0 I mean, good night!\u00a0 How broken are you?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re expecting people, who don\u2019t know Christ, to behave as though they do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why would we judge them?\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly the same way I\u2019d be behaving if Christ didn\u2019t live in me.\u00a0 We aren\u2019t going to win the day by yelling, and screaming, and turning up the emotional intensity of our arguments in this culture.\u00a0 We are going to win the day, not by finger-pointing; but we\u2019re going to win the day by becoming Christ-like as we love broken people and offer them\u2014offer them and say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 This is where you find life.\u00a0 This is where you can find reality.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst Corinthians 13 talks about faith, hope, and love.\u00a0 It says the greatest of these\u2014the greatest of those three:\u00a0 faith, hope, and love\u2014is love.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because love can conquer even a hardened heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s a place where I had to do a little adjusting on my own because, again, when you look at media\u2014and particularly news media today\u2014turning up the volume and shouting has become the way to win ratings and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s entertainment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and you watch it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and you can become like it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you get sucked right into it.\u00a0 Yet, there is a fundamental self-righteousness that comes with that\u2014that is, again, natural, I think, to all of us.\u00a0 It feeds something inside of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Only to you, Bob.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Not me.\u00a0 Are you kidding me?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have to remember, all of us, that what we see in others is equally true about us.\u00a0 We\u2019re all sinners.\u00a0 We\u2019re all at the same place, at the foot of the cross, in need of the same salvation.\u00a0 The person you\u2019re looking at and going, \u201cHow could that person think that\u2014be that way?\u00a0 How can they live that way?\u201d\u00a0 Listen, you\u2019re a lot closer to them than you are to the perfect example of Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 Don\u2019t miss this nuance of this one\u2014training your family to love others.\u00a0 Your little unit needs to be an incubator where you birth real love that pierces the darkness of the culture.\u00a0 That means your kids need to catch from you how to do it\u2014that they need to be taught from you how to do.\u00a0 You do that by getting in the Book.\u00a0 You read about Jesus, and how He handled those who persecuted Him and who wanted to put Him to death, and you attempt to love them as He did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jesus is a better role model here than some of the anchors on TV; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that\u2019s accurate.\u00a0 Number two:\u00a0 Train your family to love others.\u00a0 Number three:\u00a0 Become a guardian of marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not just your marriage. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, and in fact, here\u2019s what I want our listeners to catch.\u00a0 I believe the real hope for marriage and family, long haul, is in our listeners\u2019 homes.\u00a0 I believe a grass roots spiritual awakening that protects the marriage covenant\u2014that also looks out for other people and their marriages\u2014is going to be the way we express the love of Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I want to talk about two ways you can be a guardian of marriage.\u00a0 Number one:\u00a0 Guard and protect the definition of marriage.\u00a0 Back in 1991, FamilyLife wrote a document called \u201cThe Family Manifesto\u201d.\u00a0 In it\u2014it seemed a stretch\u2014but in \u201cThe Family Manifesto\u201d, we defined marriage between a man and a woman and their God for a lifetime, never between two people of the same sex.\u00a0 Now, today, as we know, that definition is coming under fire.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to increasingly come under fire, but we must not be silent.\u00a0 We must speak up and defend marriage, in a loving way.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I had love as number two.\u00a0 We need to graciously speak up and say, \u201cNo, man didn\u2019t design marriage.\u00a0 God did.\u201d\u00a0 What God designed, we need to be careful that we don\u2019t redefine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA second way you can be the guardian of marriage, though, is by keeping your marriage covenant and calling others to do the same.\u00a0 I was recently with a guy who went to <em>I Still Do\u2122.<\/em>\u00a0 Bob, do you remember <em>I Still Do<\/em>?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We used to hold events, around the country, as we celebrated the marriage covenant.\u00a0 Well, this young man and his wife came and brought another couple from their town to <em>I Still Do<\/em> in Memphis.\u00a0 Both couples got the marriage covenant that we passed out, at the end of that event.\u00a0 They went home and signed it\u2014had their kids witness it.\u00a0 They framed it, put it up on the wall\u2014I believe in their bedroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA few years passed.\u00a0 My friend said, \u201cI heard that the other couple that went with us to Memphis\u2014to <em>I Still Do<\/em>\u2014were in trouble and they were getting a divorce.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI went home after work. I took the marriage covenant off of our wall and went down to this guy\u2019s office.\u201d\u00a0 He was a doctor.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI took that covenant in there and said, \u2018I\u2019m here to help you make good on your marriage covenant.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 I wish I could tell you that that turned him around.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t, but you know what?\u00a0 If more of that occurred, on behalf of other people\u2019s covenants, we wouldn\u2019t see the divorce rate what it is today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We need to care about our own covenant; but also, be looking out for other people\u2019s marriage covenant.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 Number three: Become a guardian of marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber four is pretty simple, but it\u2019s pretty radical.\u00a0 Slow down.\u00a0 Slow down.\u00a0 Take a step back\u2014evaluate your schedule and where it\u2019s taking you, your marriage and your family\u2014and pull back and take a look at the pace of life\u2014how you compare your schedule and all the things your family is doing with other families\u2014and all the fatigue that it is producing, and all the increased schedule.\u00a0 It even makes me tired to think about it, Bob. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you remember the mom we talked to this year who had done the radical sabbatical for her family\u2014where they pared off all kinds of things?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about taking that kind of a look at your schedule.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am.\u00a0 Ephesians 5 talks about being wise about the days because they are evil.\u00a0 Bob, I think this is one of the most important things couples need to be considering today because the pace of life can set you up for an affair.\u00a0 It can set you up to turn against your spouse, and it can also result in no longer investing in your marriage.\u00a0 You\u2019re so busy, you don\u2019t have time for one another, and creating romance, and healthy conversations, where you get a chance to listen and connect with each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about being purposeful and intentional about the things that really matter because the culture will try to tell you, \u201cHere\u2019s what really matters.\u201d\u00a0 We have to weigh that out against what the Scriptures say really matters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 Number five\u2014this is to men.\u00a0 Listen carefully, guys.\u00a0 Man up and step up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I knew this was going to be on the top ten somewhere.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Focus on becoming, not just any man, but a <em>courageous<\/em> man.\u00a0 I want you to listen to me carefully.\u00a0 This culture is trying to dis-courage you.\u00a0 It is trying to remove courage from your chest.\u00a0 It wants to rob you of your courage; but there isn\u2019t a man listening, Bob, who wants to be known as a coward.\u00a0 We don\u2019t talk much about cowardice anymore.\u00a0 We should.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was recently with a group of men, about 15 men at a getaway, and we talked about why it\u2019s so easy for men to be passive.\u00a0 We came up with all kinds of reasons\u2014afraid of failing, we are lazy, and we don\u2019t know how\u2014so, the easiest thing to do is nothing.\u00a0 We let our wives do it.\u00a0 So, we talked about, \u201cWhat should we do?\u201d\u00a0 We watched the new <em>Stepping Up\u2122<\/em> video series that we just finished, which is a small group video series for men\u2019s groups.\u00a0 We got through eight of the ten in about four days.\u00a0 As a result\u2014I\u2019ve got a feeling, Bob\u2014there were about 15 wives, scattered all over the country, who had men come home from that retreat that probably surprised them.\u00a0 It was like, \u201cWhat happened to my husband?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat happened to my husband?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want our listeners to know\u2014the battle today for the family begins with how men behave.\u00a0 I want to show you how powerful an illustration can be of a man who behaves well by letting you listen to a clip from a <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> broadcast\u2014I don\u2019t know, how many years ago? \u2014maybe\u2014six, eight, or ten years ago.\u00a0 R.V.
