[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, wait just a second.\u00a0 You raised four daughters; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there ever any pushback?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, oh yes.\u00a0 There wasn\u2019t pushback.\u00a0 There was very stimulating discussion\u2014stimulating discussion\u2014four daughters.\u00a0 There were different times in their lives when they thought it was a good idea; other times when they weren\u2019t quite as sure about the whole thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have been having a very stimulating discussion this week with the author of a book called <em>What He Must Be...if He Wants to Marry My Daughter<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Voddie Baucham joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Voddie, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 It\u2019s good to be back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Voddie is a pastor.\u00a0 He is a conference speaker, a professor, writer, and he\u2019s been a frequent guest, here, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEarlier, Voddie, we talked about how a young man needs to be a follower of Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You follow up that qualification with another one that is tied to being a follower of Christ.\u00a0 He needs to know how to lead like Christ.\u00a0 Explain what you mean by that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 If you look in Ephesians, Chapter 5, and you look at the list of qualifications, really, for a husband\u2014you look at this picture of what it means to be a Christ-like leader\u2014basically, to lead a wife as Christ leads the church.\u00a0 You find that the picture is not just about a guy who pounds his chest and, \u201cMe man; you woman\u2014me speak; you do.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s to lead in love.\u00a0 He\u2019s to lead in the Word.\u00a0 He\u2019s to lead in righteousness.\u00a0 He\u2019s to lead in selflessness, and he is to lead in intimacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost guys don\u2019t understand servant-leadership from that perspective.\u00a0 So, it\u2019s very important that when we talk about the way a husband is supposed to lead, we don\u2019t just take the culture\u2019s definition of leadership and superimpose that on the Scriptures.\u00a0 We have to get into the Word of God to determine what biblical leadership in the home looks like; and then look for an individual who understands that, as opposed to just the cultural norm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have already shared with us this week that you never saw a picture of what biblical leadership in the home looks like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014from a father, from a husband.\u00a0 So, how did you get that picture drawn for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, what my wife and I did was\u2014we found people who did marriage well.\u00a0 We hung around them until they told us, \u201cIt\u2019s enough.\u201d\u00a0 We really did.\u00a0 We found some people.\u00a0 There were a couple of teammates of mine at Rice University who came from some pretty solid families.\u00a0 We just found ourselves gravitating towards those folks and gravitating toward people in our church, also, for example\u2014who did marriage well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, reading the Scriptures and trying to figure out who it is that we were supposed to be, and how it is that we are supposed to live and function within these roles.\u00a0 Part of the problem was we didn\u2019t know what we didn\u2019t know, but we knew that we didn\u2019t want to reproduce what we had seen in our homes of origin.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m sensing, though, that you are a pretty natural leader; right?\u00a0 You are kind of a take-charge kind of guy; aren\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, really, I\u2019m not.\u00a0 I\u2019m kind of a wall flower.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, come on!\u00a0 Come on!\u00a0 You are not pulling that over\u2014[Laughter] \u2014but 20 years ago, were you a take-charge\u2014?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes; always.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you authoritarian, back then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 In my personality, or do you mean in our marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no.\u00a0 I really wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 I really wasn\u2019t authoritarian in my marriage\u2014partly because I married a very strong woman, and partially because I did not want to be the negative pictures that I saw. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So you had enough savvy to figure out you needed to get a mentor.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t know what you didn\u2019t know\u2014so, you\u2019re going to attach yourself to somebody who did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would say to the single people, who are listening, that\u2014again, we\u2019re addressing fathers about their responsibility to interview and prequalify the young man who\u2019s going to get their daughter in marriage.\u00a0 To the single man, who is listening in, who may feel a deficit in some of these areas\u2014you\u2019re saying, \u201cFind someone that you respect in this area and come close to them for a season.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It may develop into a lifetime friendship; but a year or two of being discipled by an older man who knows how to lead his wife and love his wife well.\u00a0 That would be a great assignment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; and here\u2019s the thing\u2014these same young men are willing to spend $100,000 to be discipled by a university so that they can get a good job at the end of it.\u00a0 They need to be willing to spend a few hours being discipled by a man who will lead them toward Christ-likeness at the end of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you think most men today drift in the direction of being abusive, authoritarian, lording leaders; or do you think most men just drift toward being couch potatoes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Passivity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, men in our culture have been feminized.\u00a0 One of the products of the feminist movement in our culture\u2014two things\u2014one, we are not raising women any more.\u00a0 We are raising men who happen to be biologically capable of having children.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, we are not raising men any more.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 We are raising these guys, who from the time that they are small, are taught to see women as <em>completely<\/em> like them in every way.\u00a0 Women are not to be protected.\u00a0 They are to be competed with.\u00a0 This radical feminist agenda has actually produced a generation of men who believe that it is evil to be what the Bible says a man is supposed to be.\u00a0 As a result of it, you have a bunch of women who are desperate to be led and a bunch of men who have no idea how to do it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve already described this week that one of the things a guy must be, if he wants to marry your daughter, is somebody who can clearly articulate the Gospel.\u00a0 We\u2019ve heard you do that and thought, \u201cWell, that rules out a whole bunch of guys.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we have to get a guy who can clearly articulate the Gospel, and who can swim against the cultural tide, and fight against the programming of the feminist culture and say, \u201cI\u2019m ready to be a man.\u201d\u00a0 You are basically saying with your book, \u201cMy daughter will never marry;\u201d right?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Is that\u2014I mean, that\u2019s the conclusion somebody could draw from reading this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that\u2019s why, again, we\u2019ve talked about\u2014if you can\u2019t find one, build one because I recognize that we are not raising young men like this\u2014which gets to another one of the purposes for the book\u2014that\u2019s clearly outlined in the book\u2014is that this is a road map for how we raise our sons because that is part of the problem.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou look at this and we say, \u201cOkay fine.\u00a0 I agree this is what we are supposed to be looking for in a young man, but that\u2019s not out there.\u201d\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s an indictment against the way people, who call themselves followers of Christ, have been raising their sons for generations now.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 To that point, there are young men like this.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 There really are.\u00a0 We are kind of spoofing the fact that there is no one out there.\u00a0 There are lots of young men who have grown up in homes that have been trained\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and who do know how to sacrificially love and lead another person, and have been in training to be a great husband, for a number of years.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 They are out there.\u00a0 They are out there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the guy has got to be follower of Christ.\u00a0 He\u2019s got to understand what it means to lead and be ready to step up with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 And Voddie, a part of leading is taking responsibility for a subject that young men today\u2014this is a tough one for them\u2014intimacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They move to one thing, and you are really calling them to another.\u00a0 Explain what you mean there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 For men, in our culture, intimacy is a three-letter word that begins with \u201cS\u201d and it ends with \u201cX\u201d.\u00a0 That\u2019s all they think of; but there is this picture in the Old Testament, carried over again in the New Testament, in Genesis 2 and Ephesians, Chapter 5, \u201cTherefore a man shall leave his mother and his father and cleave to his wife.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe picture of intimacy there is this picture that begins with the commitment\u2014the leaving and the cleaving\u2014and leads to the one flesh.\u00a0 Unfortunately, in our culture, we have it backwards.\u00a0 We have people who want to become one flesh for a while to see if they are really interested in really leaving and cleaving.\u00a0 As a result, they are undermining the intimacy in their marriage because the commitment is not what is there first.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI talk, in the book, about this protection of intimacy from the outside and then on the inside.\u00a0 From the outside, that means that we protect the marriage relationship from all invaders, foreign and domestic.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Such as?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Such as foreign invaders\u2014my buddies that I used to hang out with before I got married.\u00a0 Haven\u2019t we all heard that?\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know what she is so upset about.\u00a0 I was hanging out with those guys long before I ever met her.\u201d\u00a0 Key phrase, \u201c<em>Before you met her<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 Now, she is prioritized above all those outside relationships\u2014not just foreign, but domestic\u2014the in-laws!\u00a0 I have to protect my marriage against the in-laws\u2014against my own parents, and against my kids!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tell my children all the time, \u201cMommy and Daddy are committed to one another.\u00a0 We come first; you don\u2019t!\u201d\u00a0 They have to understand that.\u00a0 Our marriage is the foundation upon which our children\u2019s security is built.\u00a0 For us to prioritize our children above our marriage is actually to undermine our children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 I have spoken to a lot of couples and reminded them that one of the phrases in the traditional wedding vow is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201c...forsaking all others.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2014\u201c...forsaking all others.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 And I have said, \u201cThat means your kids.\u00a0 That means your parents.\u00a0 That means your siblings.\u00a0 That means the allegiance here is primary.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut when the kids come along, and they are so helpless, and they are so needy, and your husband or your wife seems more self-sufficient than those kids, you can see how a mom\u2019s heart gets drawn away or how a dad begins to prioritize his kids ahead of his spouse; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; absolutely.\u00a0 That\u2019s why it is so important that we set these priorities.\u00a0 It\u2019s so important that we have these things understood and discussed long beforehand.\u00a0 It\u2019s very important that our worldview lens is adjusted in this direction so that we protect ourselves and protect the intimacy in our marriage.\u00a0 This is an area, quite frankly, where men, in our culture, are not prepared to lead.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about protecting the young lady from the intimacy before marriage because, as a dad, you may be observing a young man who is being just a little too physically friendly with your daughter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m sure this has never happened; but what would you say to a young man if you felt like he was being too familiar with your daughter? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d say, \u201cYou are being too familiar with my daughter.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 All he would have to do is look at Voddie Baucham, former college football tight end\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Six\u2014how tall are you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 On the radio, I am 6\u20198\u201d.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s not 6\u20198\u201d, but he is more than 6 foot!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you 6\u20193\u201d.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Six-three\u2014that\u2019s what\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He would look 6\u20198\u201d to that young man.\u00a0 If you said, \u201cYou\u2019re being too familiar,\u201d I think he would respond by saying, \u201cYes, sir, Mr. Baucham.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019d back off; wouldn\u2019t he?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But to this point\u2014dads need to be there, in the relationship!\u00a0 They can\u2019t just fall over\u2014and as you said earlier\u2014be a cheap suit and just fold.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; absolutely.\u00a0 You can\u2019t do that.\u00a0 It all goes back to understanding our responsibilities, and dads do not comprehend this.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the other thing.\u00a0 A lot of dads are uncomfortable with it.\u00a0 They are uncomfortable with the way their daughters are dressing.\u00a0 They are uncomfortable with the way their daughters conduct themselves around young men.\u00a0 They are uncomfortable with the way young men are too familiar with their daughters.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut our culture has come along and whispered into their ears, \u201cNow, you know, that\u2019s the way things are.\u00a0 You are just overprotective. You need to let them\u2014\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s a lie!\u00a0 It\u2019s an absolute lie.\u00a0 We have completely abdicated our responsibility.\u00a0 As a result, we have an epidemic of unprotected women in our culture.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve said that a young man is going to have to be a follower of Christ.\u00a0 He\u2019s going to have to be someone who understands what spiritual leadership looks like\u2014understands the priority of the marriage relationship, if he is going to enter into it.\u00a0 You also believe he needs to value children.\u00a0 If a young man comes and says, \u201cYes, kids\u2014I\u2019m okay with having kids,\u201d but there is not really a desire or priority for that.\u00a0 Are you saying, \u201cNot my daughter\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bye, bye.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, because that is one of the <em>purposes<\/em> of the thing.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 He\u2019s telling me he doesn\u2019t understand the purpose of the thing.\u00a0 So, when we are getting married\u2014when we look, for example, in Malachi\u2014why is God so upset in Malachi with these people who are unfaithful to the wife of their youth?\u00a0 What was He after?\u00a0 He was after\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2014a godly\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2014a godly offspring.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the purposes of the thing.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cBe fruitful and multiply.\u201d\u00a0 This idea here is not one that is sort of, \u201cMaybe; maybe not.\u00a0 Whatever, depending on\u2014\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 No!\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the purposes of the thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You talk about a couple in the book, Jim and Debbie, who were on opposite ends of this issue.\u00a0 It was a problem; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I watched it happen.\u00a0 I sat down with this couple, and I\u2019m having a conversation with this couple.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking at this woman who is crushed.\u00a0 Her spirit is crushed!\u00a0\u00a0 These are Christian people, okay?\u00a0 I\u2019m looking at this man and he\u2019s saying, \u201cListen, we agreed, before we got married, no children.\u00a0 She agreed to it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, here\u2019s the back story.\u00a0\u00a0 He had <em>stolen<\/em> four years of her life.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 Finally\u2014in order for her\u2014after giving four years of her life to this man\u2014finally, for him to pull the trigger and marry her\u2014he basically corners her and says, \u201cWell, we\u2019d have to agree that there aren\u2019t going to be any children.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He blackmailed her, basically.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 He blackmailed her.\u00a0 He blackmailed her!\u00a0 So now, several years later, every time she sees a baby, she\u2019s breaking down crying; alright?\u00a0 He\u2019s going, \u201cHey, we had a deal here.\u00a0 We had an agreement.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m pushing hard after a couple of conversations.\u00a0 I am like, \u201cNow, wait a minute.\u00a0 What does it mean to love your wife?\u201d He looks at me and he says, \u201cI don\u2019t know that I want to answer that question.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d He said, \u201cBecause if I answer that question, ultimately, you are going to get me to the place where I have to admit that the loving thing to do would be to give her children.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to answer that question.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, my goodness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dude, you just answered the question!\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 Anyway, to make a long story short, I sit here and this guy basically says\u2014I\u2019 like, \u201cYou know that you could lose this woman.\u00a0 She\u2019s checking out.\u201d\u00a0 I see this happening.\u00a0 He says, \u201cI understand.\u201d\u00a0 That couple got divorced, within a year of that encounter, all because he dug in his heals and said, \u201cNo children.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, I want to go back to what you said earlier when Bob asked you the question, \u201cWhat would happen if a young man wasn\u2019t interested in having children?\u201d\u00a0 Your response was, \u201cBye, bye.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Bye, bye.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know what you are saying, \u201cWhat is there unclear about what I just said?\u201d\u00a0 But would you\u2014I\u2019m going to make just a theoretical situation here.\u00a0 If you had a young man who was really tracking with you, and he understands what Christ did for him at the cross, and he understands how to lead.\u00a0 He\u2019s showing a heart for God, and he\u2019s like I was when I was first married.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have a big heart for children.\u00a0\u00a0 I would say I got a heart transplant from the Scriptures from a man who discipled me.\u00a0 Wouldn\u2019t you, as a father, if you saw green lights in almost every other area, wouldn\u2019t you put your arm around that young man and say, \u201cYou know, young man, let\u2019s come and let\u2019s\u2014\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would treat it like every other one of these qualifications:\u00a0 Can\u2019t find one? Build one.\u00a0 I\u2019d treat it like every other one of these qualifications.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s reason together from the Scriptures.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about this a bit.\u00a0 The Scriptures\u2014when they declare, \u201cBehold the fruit of the womb is a reward, a gift from\u2014\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Where?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 From God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 God.\u00a0 That\u2019s a pretty good gift because the Giver is perfect.\u00a0 I think you are right.\u00a0 I think this culture has really missed the good gifts of God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We are so far away on this\u2014that immediately, when you say something like this, people go to the extreme.\u00a0 They say, \u201cWell, wait a minute!\u00a0 Are you saying that a person has to have 49 kids in order to be godly?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not what I said.\u00a0 I said, \u201cOur <em>attitud<\/em>e toward children has to be a biblical one.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what I am saying.\u00a0 We have to have a biblical attitude toward children.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We are not dictating the size of the quiver.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right; that\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is up to God to determine.\u00a0 What we are championing is God\u2019s viewpoint of children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you have that kind of viewpoint, then that affects how you shepherd, as a dad.\u00a0 When you say, \u201cThis is a gift from God.\u00a0 I\u2019m supposed to care for this gift\u2014steward this gift\u2014then you\u2019re going to take a deep breath, and you\u2019re going to muster up some courage in those moments when it\u2019s hard, and you\u2019re going to do what a dad needs to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what Voddie has outlined in the book, <em>What He Must Be...if He Wants to Marry My Daughter<\/em>\u2014a good book for dads to read through as they understand their responsibilities\u2014our responsibilities, as men, in protecting our daughters.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt brings to mind the books, Dennis, that you\u2019ve <\/strong>If a dad is going to be involved in his teenage daughter\u2019s life\u2014guiding, guarding, protecting her\u2014there are going to be times when that dad is going to have to step in and make some unpopular decisions.\u00a0 Here\u2019s Voddie Baucham.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 A lot of dads are uncomfortable with it.\u00a0 They are uncomfortable with the way their daughters are dressing.\u00a0 They are uncomfortable with the way their daughters conduct themselves around young men.\u00a0 They are uncomfortable with the way young men are too familiar with their daughters.\u00a0 But our culture has come along and whispered into their ears, \u201cNow, you know, that\u2019s the way things are.\u00a0 You are just overprotective.\u00a0 You need to let them\u2014\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s a lie.\u00a0 It\u2019s an absolute lie.\u00a0 We have completely abdicated our responsibility; and as a result, we have an epidemic of unprotected women in our culture.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, October 10<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I am Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We are going to give some dads some courage today to be the protectors of their daughters, even if their daughter is saying, \u201cI don\u2019t want your protection.\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk about that today.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I have a suspicion there may be some daughters who just said, \u201cDaddy, let\u2019s listen to a different station today\u201d you know? \u2014 \u201cinstead of this one we\u2019ve been listening to.\u00a0 Let\u2019s just tune out and listen to something different.\u00a0 Maybe some music would be good.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, Bob, daughters wouldn\u2019t do that.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They wouldn\u2019t push back against the idea of a daddy interviewing their date and then maybe going on to qualify the young man who is going to take them as his bride. [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Now, wait just a second.\u00a0 You raised four daughters; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there ever any pushback?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, oh yes.\u00a0 There wasn\u2019t pushback.\u00a0 There was very stimulating discussion\u2014stimulating discussion\u2014four daughters.\u00a0 There were different times in their lives when they thought it was a good idea; other times when they weren\u2019t quite as sure about the whole thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have been having a very stimulating discussion this week with the author of a book called <em>What He Must Be...if He Wants to Marry My Daughter<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Voddie Baucham joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Voddie, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 It\u2019s good to be back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Voddie is a pastor.\u00a0 He is a conference speaker, a professor, writer, and he\u2019s been a frequent guest, here, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEarlier, Voddie, we talked about how a young man needs to be a follower of Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You follow up that qualification with another one that is tied to being a follower of Christ.\u00a0 He needs to know how to lead like Christ.\u00a0 Explain what you mean by that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 If you look in Ephesians, Chapter 5, and you look at the list of qualifications, really, for a husband\u2014you look at this picture of what it means to be a Christ-like leader\u2014basically, to lead a wife as Christ leads the church.\u00a0 You find that the picture is not just about a guy who pounds his chest and, \u201cMe man; you woman\u2014me speak; you do.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s to lead in love.\u00a0 He\u2019s to lead in the Word.\u00a0 He\u2019s to lead in righteousness.\u00a0 He\u2019s to lead in selflessness, and he is to lead in intimacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost guys don\u2019t understand servant-leadership from that perspective.\u00a0 So, it\u2019s very important that when we talk about the way a husband is supposed to lead, we don\u2019t just take the culture\u2019s definition of leadership and superimpose that on the Scriptures.\u00a0 We have to get into the Word of God to determine what biblical leadership in the home looks like; and then look for an individual who understands that, as opposed to just the cultural norm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have already shared with us this week that you never saw a picture of what biblical leadership in the home looks like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014from a father, from a husband.\u00a0 So, how did you get that picture drawn for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, what my wife and I did was\u2014we found people who did marriage well.\u00a0 We hung around them until they told us, \u201cIt\u2019s enough.\u201d\u00a0 We really did.\u00a0 We found some people.\u00a0 There were a couple of teammates of mine at Rice University who came from some pretty solid families.\u00a0 We just found ourselves gravitating towards those folks and gravitating toward people in our church, also, for example\u2014who did marriage well. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, reading the Scriptures and trying to figure out who it is that we were supposed to be, and how it is that we are supposed to live and function within these roles.\u00a0 Part of the problem was we didn\u2019t know what we didn\u2019t know, but we knew that we didn\u2019t want to reproduce what we had seen in our homes of origin.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m sensing, though, that you are a pretty natural leader; right?\u00a0 You are kind of a take-charge kind of guy; aren\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, really, I\u2019m not.\u00a0 I\u2019m kind of a wall flower.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, come on!\u00a0 Come on!\u00a0 You are not pulling that over\u2014[Laughter] \u2014but 20 years ago, were you a take-charge\u2014?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes; always.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you authoritarian, back then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 In my personality, or do you mean in our marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no.\u00a0 I really wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 I really wasn\u2019t authoritarian in my marriage\u2014partly because I married a very strong woman, and partially because I did not want to be the negative pictures that I saw. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So you had enough savvy to figure out you needed to get a mentor.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t know what you didn\u2019t know\u2014so, you\u2019re going to attach yourself to somebody who did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would say to the single people, who are listening, that\u2014again, we\u2019re addressing fathers about their responsibility to interview and prequalify the young man who\u2019s going to get their daughter in marriage.\u00a0 To the single man, who is listening in, who may feel a deficit in some of these areas\u2014you\u2019re saying, \u201cFind someone that you respect in this area and come close to them for a season.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It may develop into a lifetime friendship; but a year or two of being discipled by an older man who knows how to lead his wife and love his wife well.\u00a0 That would be a great assignment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; and here\u2019s the thing\u2014these same young men are willing to spend $100,000 to be discipled by a university so that they can get a good job at the end of it.\u00a0 They need to be willing to spend a few hours being discipled by a man who will lead them toward Christ-likeness at the end of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you think most men today drift in the direction of being abusive, authoritarian, lording leaders; or do you think most men just drift toward being couch potatoes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Passivity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, men in our culture have been feminized.\u00a0 One of the products of the feminist movement in our culture\u2014two things\u2014one, we are not raising women any more.\u00a0 We are raising men who happen to be biologically capable of having children.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, we are not raising men any more.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 We are raising these guys, who from the time that they are small, are taught to see women as <em>completely<\/em> like them in every way.\u00a0 Women are not to be protected.\u00a0 They are to be competed with.\u00a0 This radical feminist agenda has actually produced a generation of men who believe that it is evil to be what the Bible says a man is supposed to be.\u00a0 As a result of it, you have a bunch of women who are desperate to be led and a bunch of men who have no idea how to do it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve already described this week that one of the things a guy must be, if he wants to marry your daughter, is somebody who can clearly articulate the Gospel.\u00a0 We\u2019ve heard you do that and thought, \u201cWell, that rules out a whole bunch of guys.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we have to get a guy who can clearly articulate the Gospel, and who can swim against the cultural tide, and fight against the programming of the feminist culture and say, \u201cI\u2019m ready to be a man.\u201d\u00a0 You are basically saying with your book, \u201cMy daughter will never marry;\u201d right?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Is that\u2014I mean, that\u2019s the conclusion somebody could draw from reading this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that\u2019s why, again, we\u2019ve talked about\u2014if you can\u2019t find one, build one because I recognize that we are not raising young men like this\u2014which gets to another one of the purposes for the book\u2014that\u2019s clearly outlined in the book\u2014is that this is a road map for how we raise our sons because that is part of the problem.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou look at this and we say, \u201cOkay fine.\u00a0 I agree this is what we are supposed to be looking for in a young man, but that\u2019s not out there.\u201d\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s an indictment against the way people, who call themselves followers of Christ, have been raising their sons for generations now.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 To that point, there are young men like this.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 There really are.\u00a0 We are kind of spoofing the fact that there is no one out there.\u00a0 There are lots of young men who have grown up in homes that have been trained\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and who do know how to sacrificially love and lead another person, and have been in training to be a great husband, for a number of years.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 They are out there.\u00a0 They are out there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the guy has got to be follower of Christ.\u00a0 He\u2019s got to understand what it means to lead and be ready to step up with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 And Voddie, a part of leading is taking responsibility for a subject that young men today\u2014this is a tough one for them\u2014intimacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They move to one thing, and you are really calling them to another.\u00a0 Explain what you mean there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 For men, in our culture, intimacy is a three-letter word that begins with \u201cS\u201d and it ends with \u201cX\u201d.\u00a0 That\u2019s all they think of; but there is this picture in the Old Testament, carried over again in the New Testament, in Genesis 2 and Ephesians, Chapter 5, \u201cTherefore a man shall leave his mother and his father and cleave to his wife.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe picture of intimacy there is this picture that begins with the commitment\u2014the leaving and the cleaving\u2014and leads to the one flesh.\u00a0 Unfortunately, in our culture, we have it backwards.\u00a0 We have people who want to become one flesh for a while to see if they are really interested in really leaving and cleaving.\u00a0 As a result, they are undermining the intimacy in their marriage because the commitment is not what is there first.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI talk, in the book, about this protection of intimacy from the outside and then on the inside.\u00a0 From the outside, that means that we protect the marriage relationship from all invaders, foreign and domestic.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Such as?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Such as foreign invaders\u2014my buddies that I used to hang out with before I got married.\u00a0 Haven\u2019t we all heard that?\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know what she is so upset about.\u00a0 I was hanging out with those guys long before I ever met her.\u201d\u00a0 Key phrase, \u201c<em>Before you met her<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 Now, she is prioritized above all those outside relationships\u2014not just foreign, but domestic\u2014the in-laws!\u00a0 I have to protect my marriage against the in-laws\u2014against my own parents, and against my kids!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI tell my children all the time, \u201cMommy and Daddy are committed to one another.\u00a0 We come first; you don\u2019t!\u201d\u00a0 They have to understand that.\u00a0 Our marriage is the foundation upon which our children\u2019s security is built.\u00a0 For us to prioritize our children above our marriage is actually to undermine our children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 I have spoken to a lot of couples and reminded them that one of the phrases in the traditional wedding vow is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201c...forsaking all others.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2014\u201c...forsaking all others.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 And I have said, \u201cThat means your kids.\u00a0 That means your parents.\u00a0 That means your siblings.\u00a0 That means the allegiance here is primary.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut when the kids come along, and they are so helpless, and they are so needy, and your husband or your wife seems more self-sufficient than those kids, you can see how a mom\u2019s heart gets drawn away or how a dad begins to prioritize his kids ahead of his spouse; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; absolutely.\u00a0 That\u2019s why it is so important that we set these priorities.\u00a0 It\u2019s so important that we have these things understood and discussed long beforehand.\u00a0 It\u2019s very important that our worldview lens is adjusted in this direction so that we protect ourselves and protect the intimacy in our marriage.\u00a0 This is an area, quite frankly, where men, in our culture, are not prepared to lead.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about protecting the young lady from the intimacy before marriage because, as a dad, you may be observing a young man who is being just a little too physically friendly with your daughter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m sure this has never happened; but what would you say to a young man if you felt like he was being too familiar with your daughter? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d say, \u201cYou are being too familiar with my daughter.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 All he would have to do is look at Voddie Baucham, former college football tight end\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Six\u2014how tall are you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 On the radio, I am 6\u20198\u201d.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s not 6\u20198\u201d, but he is more than 6 foot!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you 6\u20193\u201d.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Six-three\u2014that\u2019s what\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He would look 6\u20198\u201d to that young man.\u00a0 If you said, \u201cYou\u2019re being too familiar,\u201d I think he would respond by saying, \u201cYes, sir, Mr. Baucham.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019d back off; wouldn\u2019t he?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But to this point\u2014dads need to be there, in the relationship!\u00a0 They can\u2019t just fall over\u2014and as you said earlier\u2014be a cheap suit and just fold.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; absolutely.\u00a0 You can\u2019t do that.\u00a0 It all goes back to understanding our responsibilities, and dads do not comprehend this.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the other thing.\u00a0 A lot of dads are uncomfortable with it.\u00a0 They are uncomfortable with the way their daughters are dressing.\u00a0 They are uncomfortable with the way their daughters conduct themselves around young men.\u00a0 They are uncomfortable with the way young men are too familiar with their daughters.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut our culture has come along and whispered into their ears, \u201cNow, you know, that\u2019s the way things are.\u00a0 You are just overprotective. You need to let them\u2014\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s a lie!\u00a0 It\u2019s an absolute lie.\u00a0 We have completely abdicated our responsibility.\u00a0 As a result, we have an epidemic of unprotected women in our culture.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve said that a young man is going to have to be a follower of Christ.\u00a0 He\u2019s going to have to be someone who understands what spiritual leadership looks like\u2014understands the priority of the marriage relationship, if he is going to enter into it.\u00a0 You also believe he needs to value children.\u00a0 If a young man comes and says, \u201cYes, kids\u2014I\u2019m okay with having kids,\u201d but there is not really a desire or priority for that.\u00a0 Are you saying, \u201cNot my daughter\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bye, bye.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, because that is one of the <em>purposes<\/em> of the thing.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 He\u2019s telling me he doesn\u2019t understand the purpose of the thing.\u00a0 So, when we are getting married\u2014when we look, for example, in Malachi\u2014why is God so upset in Malachi with these people who are unfaithful to the wife of their youth?\u00a0 What was He after?\u00a0 He was after\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2014a godly\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2014a godly offspring.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the purposes of the thing.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cBe fruitful and multiply.\u201d\u00a0 This idea here is not one that is sort of, \u201cMaybe; maybe not.\u00a0 Whatever, depending on\u2014\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 No!\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the purposes of the thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You talk about a couple in the book, Jim and Debbie, who were on opposite ends of this issue.\u00a0 It was a problem; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I watched it happen.\u00a0 I sat down with this couple, and I\u2019m having a conversation with this couple.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking at this woman who is crushed.\u00a0 Her spirit is crushed!\u00a0\u00a0 These are Christian people, okay?\u00a0 I\u2019m looking at this man and he\u2019s saying, \u201cListen, we agreed, before we got married, no children.\u00a0 She agreed to it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, here\u2019s the back story.\u00a0\u00a0 He had <em>stolen<\/em> four years of her life.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 Finally\u2014in order for her\u2014after giving four years of her life to this man\u2014finally, for him to pull the trigger and marry her\u2014he basically corners her and says, \u201cWell, we\u2019d have to agree that there aren\u2019t going to be any children.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He blackmailed her, basically.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 He blackmailed her.\u00a0 He blackmailed her!\u00a0 So now, several years later, every time she sees a baby, she\u2019s breaking down crying; alright?\u00a0 He\u2019s going, \u201cHey, we had a deal here.\u00a0 We had an agreement.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m pushing hard after a couple of conversations.\u00a0 I am like, \u201cNow, wait a minute.\u00a0 What does it mean to love your wife?\u201d He looks at me and he says, \u201cI don\u2019t know that I want to answer that question.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhy?\u201d He said, \u201cBecause if I answer that question, ultimately, you are going to get me to the place where I have to admit that the loving thing to do would be to give her children.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to answer that question.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, my goodness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dude, you just answered the question!\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 Anyway, to make a long story short, I sit here and this guy basically says\u2014I\u2019 like, \u201cYou know that you could lose this woman.\u00a0 She\u2019s checking out.\u201d\u00a0 I see this happening.\u00a0 He says, \u201cI understand.\u201d\u00a0 That couple got divorced, within a year of that encounter, all because he dug in his heals and said, \u201cNo children.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, I want to go back to what you said earlier when Bob asked you the question, \u201cWhat would happen if a young man wasn\u2019t interested in having children?\u201d\u00a0 Your response was, \u201cBye, bye.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Bye, bye.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know what you are saying, \u201cWhat is there unclear about what I just said?\u201d\u00a0 But would you\u2014I\u2019m going to make just a theoretical situation here.\u00a0 If you had a young man who was really tracking with you, and he understands what Christ did for him at the cross, and he understands how to lead.\u00a0 He\u2019s showing a heart for God, and he\u2019s like I was when I was first married.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have a big heart for children.\u00a0\u00a0 I would say I got a heart transplant from the Scriptures from a man who discipled me.\u00a0 Wouldn\u2019t you, as a father, if you saw green lights in almost every other area, wouldn\u2019t you put your arm around that young man and say, \u201cYou know, young man, let\u2019s come and let\u2019s\u2014\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would treat it like every other one of these qualifications:\u00a0 Can\u2019t find one? Build one.\u00a0 I\u2019d treat it like every other one of these qualifications.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s reason together from the Scriptures.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about this a bit.\u00a0 The Scriptures\u2014when they declare, \u201cBehold the fruit of the womb is a reward, a gift from\u2014\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Where?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 From God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 God.\u00a0 That\u2019s a pretty good gift because the Giver is perfect.\u00a0 I think you are right.\u00a0 I think this culture has really missed the good gifts of God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We are so far away on this\u2014that immediately, when you say something like this, people go to the extreme.\u00a0 They say, \u201cWell, wait a minute!\u00a0 Are you saying that a person has to have 49 kids in order to be godly?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not what I said.\u00a0 I said, \u201cOur <em>attitud<\/em>e toward children has to be a biblical one.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what I am saying.\u00a0 We have to have a biblical attitude toward children.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We are not dictating the size of the quiver.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right;
