When Matt Chandler was diagnosed with a brain tumor, doctors told him that the prognosis was not good.\u00a0 They expected him to live no more than two or three more years.\u00a0 This Thanksgiving will be the three-year anniversary of that diagnosis.\u00a0 As of today, Matt\u2019s scans are clear.\u00a0 He is cancer-free, but the ordeal is not over for Matt.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re still fully-convinced that this takes my life and takes my life in under a decade.\u00a0 They\u2019re still fully-convinced of that.\u00a0 So, those are some of the things that you kind of have to continue to learn to walk in and learn to just kind of, once again, open-handedness in this.\u00a0 You know, \u201cLord, I want that.\u00a0 I want to throw the ball with my boy on the beach when he\u2019s 16.\u00a0 I want him to be able to take trips with me.\u00a0 I want him to be able to do those things; but You are better, ultimately.\u00a0 I want to voice to You that I trust You.\u00a0 If You want to call me home, then, let\u2019s go; but I\u2019d like this\u2014\u201d\u00a0 edition.\u00a0 Have you ever thought, somewhere in the back of your mind, when you\u2019re in the midst of a challenge, a struggle, that you\u2019ve tried to be good and maybe you don\u2019t deserve what\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, absolutely!\u00a0 It\u2019s like, \u201cLord!\u00a0 Do You not know what Your servant has done for You recently?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 It\u2019s totally arrogant.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s totally\u2014it is terrible theology.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s not the way God operates.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t give us what we deserve.\u00a0 If He did, we\u2019d be crispy critters.\u00a0 He\u2019d fry us because we don\u2019t deserve good things to happen to us all the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been hearing, this week, from Matt and Lauren Chandler.\u00a0 Matt is the pastor at the Village Church in Flower Mound, Texas, just north of the DFW Airport.\u00a0 He and Lauren have three children.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThree years ago, on Thanksgiving\u2014they are coming up on the third anniversary of Thanksgiving weekend\u2014where Matt had a seizure.\u00a0 The doctors found that seizure was because of a stage-three brain tumor\u2014a tumor that, first of all, they said, \u201cIt\u2019s got to be removed.\u201d\u00a0 Secondly, they said, \u201cThese are deadly tumors.\u201d\u00a0 They gave him a two to three years prognosis.\u00a0 They said, \u201cEven if we remove the tumor and do radiation, two to three years is the life expectancy.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I said, they are coming up on three years.\u00a0 Right now, the scans are clear; but I had the opportunity to talk with them about what it\u2019s like to live with this, in the back of your mind\u2014literally and figuratively\u2014as a couple.\u00a0 The reality that the doctors have said, \u201cThis is probably going to kill you sooner rather than later.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think a story like this, Bob, needs to have the bookends\u2014on the front and the back\u2014of Scripture.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to read the same passage twice because there are listeners who are going to identify, maybe not with the severity of the news that Matt Chandler heard, but with their own set of trials and suffering.\u00a0 First Peter, Chapter 4, verse 12, says, \u201cBeloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you as though something strange were happening to you; but rejoice in so far as you share Christ\u2019s sufferings that you may be able to rejoice and be glad when His glory is revealed.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll suffering has purpose.\u00a0 God has a reason for allowing suffering, for taking us through periods of suffering.\u00a0 Our character is refined; our character is revealed.\u00a0 As you are going to hear in Matt Chandler\u2019s story today and in his wife, Lauren, you\u2019re going to hear up-close and personal how two people\u2014two good people; but nonetheless, broken people\u2014process some life-shattering news.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ll hear how they deal honestly with that news, transparently; and yet, how they deal with it in faith at the same time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really, as a man who is not looking to escape\u2014I love my wife deeply, I love our children deeply.\u00a0 I love our family.\u00a0 I love coming home.\u00a0 It has been one of the great gifts of God and one of the great joys of my life to be given the family that I\u2019ve been given and the wife I\u2019ve been given.\u00a0 I don\u2019t just love my wife.\u00a0 I really enjoy Lauren\u2014one of my best friends.\u00a0 I\u2019m getting to like her more, and more, and more.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always liked her.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, to worry about, \u201cDo I get this future?\u00a0 Do I get to be 60 and sip coffee with my wife in the morning?\u00a0 Do I get to be an empty-nester?\u00a0 Do I get to come back around in my 50\u2019s and just have my wife to myself again, and have our home where we\u2019re not cleaning dirty diapers, and we\u2019re not having to magic-erase marker off the wall, and we can actually have nice stuff that doesn\u2019t get destroyed in a year-and-a-half\/two years, and really kind of enjoy one another?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut then, to look at this very real possibility of early\u2014I don\u2019t think anybody leaves early; right?\u00a0 But to leave, honestly, before I thought I would.\u00a0 It created in me\u2014really, what the Lord stirred up and showed me is that I had some idolatry in my life.\u00a0 I had some confidence in me and my life\u2014that, ultimately, is the kind of idolatry that you would never get in trouble for.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Lord had to just really graciously go, \u201cYou love them more than I do?\u201d or, \u201cYou\u2019re a better provider for your wife than I am?\u201d or, \u201cReally, all your hopes and dreams about your family are built around you?\u201d\u00a0 Those were the kind of gut-checks that the Lord was having with me in those early days.\u00a0 Then, one of the gifts He gave me\u2014one of the really sweet gifts He gave me is that it was alright to mourn and alright to ask Him for things that maybe sounded selfish.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, believe He\u2019s sovereign, love Him more than anyone or anything else in the universe\u2014but I want to walk my daughter down the aisle.\u00a0 I do.\u00a0 I want to see my boy become a man.\u00a0 I would love to see him get married.\u00a0 I\u2019d love to see him be a daddy.\u00a0 I\u2019d love to have grandbabies.\u00a0 I want those things.\u00a0 It\u2019s not idolatrous for me to want those things.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike everything else, I just need to have an open hand and say, \u201cYou gave me the breath.\u00a0 You gave me the life.\u00a0 It\u2019s Yours to do with as You please; but ultimately, I have these desires, and I don\u2019t think they are wicked desires.\u201d\u00a0 That was some of the internal wrestle that was occurring as I was staring death in the face; but simultaneously, really wanting, what I think are real gifts and joys that God gives in means of common grace.\u00a0 He gives to a lot of men\u2014even men who don\u2019t love Him.\u00a0 That was the wrestle that was going on in my heart.\u00a0 God was stripping from me maybe some closed handedness and maybe some pride in my life towards the kind of husband I was and the kind of father I was because if you asked me, \u201cI\u2019m doing it right.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo we have Bible studies in our house?\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 Do we worship as a family?\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 Do we pray as a family?\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 Do we engage our kids with grace and try to point them toward\u2014their hearts toward Christ, all the time?\u00a0 \u201cConstantly.\u201d\u00a0 Are we perfect?\u00a0 \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 But are we doing what the Lord would command us to do in the Scriptures?\u00a0 As a husband, am I?\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 As a father, am I?\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 Is my wife doing the same?\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I had\u2014God, help me.\u00a0 I had kind of, \u201cYou owe me this,\u201d in my heart.\u00a0 I had no idea it was there.\u00a0 I had no idea it was there.\u00a0 Really, that was some of the wrestle that I was going through in those early days.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Lauren, did you, in these days, start to think about, \u201cOkay, if we only have two years, I want to make sure we do Hawaii.\u00a0 I want to make sure we do this\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 We had already done Hawaii.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you start to go through the check list of, \u201cHere\u2019s what\u2019s on the bucket list\u201d?\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s get this done.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to get prepared for if I\u2019m going to be a single parent.\u201d\u00a0 Were you doing all that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I really believed that Matt had more than two to three years.\u00a0 I really felt like the Lord just said, \u201cToday.\u00a0 Let\u2019s just think about today.\u201d\u00a0 Honestly, it\u2019s interesting just what the years leading up to that had done\u2014the Lord had done in me.\u00a0 I had a couple of miscarriages.\u00a0 I\u2019d gone through some loss and\u2014where you go through that thing of, \u201cI don\u2019t want to hope, and I don\u2019t want to plan because then I\u2019ll be disappointed.\u201d\u00a0 But getting to just hope and just let that\u2014like Matt said, letting that hope be in the Lord and what He would have.\u00a0 Have these desires, but being open-handed about them; and then, trusting the Lord that He would just bring what we needed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen he was\u2014early on in his ministry\u2014we were newly-married.\u00a0 I would just get nervous when he\u2019d fly, and I\u2019d be home.\u00a0 I\u2019d be afraid if something happened to the airplane, and I was left single\u2014especially when I was pregnant with Audrey.\u00a0 In my mind, I\u2019d play out these scenarios.\u00a0 I would play out, \u201cOkay, who could take care of me?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 That ended up putting just this wedge between us in our relationship.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even realize it.\u00a0 The Lord convicted me of making this Plan B and showing me that I was not trusting Him by making up Plan B.\u00a0 I was really causing a rift between our relationship, in my heart and mind, by making a Plan B and not being completely where I am.\u00a0 So, I\u2019ve had years of guarding my heart and my mind against that when this comes into play.\u00a0 <br><br>We\u2019re doing this Galatians study\u2014Tim Keller\u2019s Galatians study\u2014with our church.\u00a0 He talks about\u2014in Galatians, where he says that He has prepared, in advance, the good works that we would do.\u00a0 He points out that He prepares us for these good works that He has coming for us.\u00a0 I think for so long I had read, \u201cOkay, He\u2019s got these good works, and I\u2019ve got to keep my eye out for them because I might miss them,\u201d \u2014but really focusing more on the Lord preparing us for these good works that He has for us to do.\u00a0 We\u2019re not going to miss them because He\u2019s shaping us so that we can walk through these good works\u2014and just really seeing those years, leading up to this trial, as preparation\u2014like He had been preparing me to deal with \u201ctwo to three years\u201d to just be, \u201cNow,\u201d\u2014and to not have a Plan B, but to just trust the Lord for each day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUltimately, what I get, because I\u2019m His, is Him.\u00a0 That\u2019s really the only hope that lasts.\u00a0 That\u2019s only the desire that\u2019s fulfilled.\u00a0 It says, \u201cA hope deferred makes the heart sick;\u201d but there is a place where I can put hope where it\u2019s not deferred.\u00a0 It\u2019s in Jesus\u2014that there is a desire that can be fulfilled.\u00a0 It\u2019s intimacy with Him and knowing Him.\u00a0 Whether that means get two to three years with my husband or I get 20 to 30 years with him, just trusting Him with each day and not getting too far ahead of Him and of the grace that\u2019s for that day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Matt, when you get a headache now\u2014when you start to get a headache, do you start to go\u2014?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 My doctors had been on\u2014like every one of them\u2014have been brilliant in coaching me through this.\u00a0 What I mean by that is\u2014yes, anytime the weather changes, anytime the pollen kicks up in the air, anytime I get a headache, I go, \u201cOh, man!\u00a0 Is this it?\u00a0 Here we go.\u201d\u00a0 Finally, I went and had a scan\u2014a scheduled scan\u2014and it was clear.\u00a0 I was, \u201cPhew!\u201d\u00a0 I just talked to my neuro-oncologist and said, \u201cHey, I get\u201d\u2014I have to remember, \u201cI got headaches before this.\u00a0 I had some allergies before this,\u201d because every time I get a headache now, every time I\u2019m fatigued now\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the ways that the tumor was signaling\u2014that we were unaware of before the seizure\u2014was I\u2019d kind of become anti-social.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to go to parties.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to go to events with a lot of people.\u00a0 I just thought the growth of the church and the pace of life that we had been living had made me a bit of a recluse, but what was happening was the tumor and where it was located was really making me kind of withdraw.\u00a0 So, anytime I feel like that, anytime Lauren\u2019s like \u201cHey, what do you think about going to this deal with the Bleakers and the Pattersons?\u201d\u2014good friends of ours\u2014and I go, \u201cI don\u2019t really want to do that.\u201d\u00a0 I find myself now going, \u201cOh, no, no.\u201d \u2014\u201cLet\u2019s do it.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go do it.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did have to figure out how to\u2014well, what we call it is \u201cthe new normal\u201d.\u00a0 I had to figure out the new normal.\u00a0 I have to preach to myself far more.\u00a0 Another really residual effect emotionally and spiritually from this journey is you just have morbid thoughts, all of the time.\u00a0 We were on vacation last year in Florida, and we\u2019re playing on the beach.\u00a0 My son and I are just kind of digging in the sand.\u00a0 He\u2019s five at the time.\u00a0 I see this teenage boy throwing the football with his dad.\u00a0 I mean, I have the thought, \u201cI wonder if I get to do that.\u201d\u00a0 I would have never had that thought before.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>They opened up a new hospital here in town\u2014a really nice kind of hospital, right down from our church.\u00a0 When they opened it, I thought, \u201cI wonder if I\u2019m going to die there.\u201d\u00a0 Those are the kinds of thoughts that you are constantly having now\u2014that I have to kind of hold in check.\u00a0 My wife laughs at me because she\u2019s like, \u201cWhat if we all die there?\u00a0 What if everybody we know\u2014maybe that\u2019s where we all go and die?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr on vacation, we took some pictures with some friends.\u00a0 In my mind, I\u2019m like, \u201cHey, in that little video-thing they play at funerals, is this going to be one of those pictures?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s just like you\u2019re stuck in that line of thinking because it\u2019s very real.\u00a0 In some strange ways, it\u2019s what Moses asked God for, \u201cTeach me to number my days.\u201d\u00a0 God\u2019s kind of given this to us as a gift because I\u2019ve still got to actively go in for scans regularly.\u00a0 They\u2019re still fully-convinced that this takes my life and takes my life in under a decade.\u00a0 They\u2019re still fully-convinced of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, those are some of the things that you kind of have to continue to learn to walk in and learn to just kind of\u2014once again, open-handedness\u2014 \u201cMaybe I don\u2019t, but maybe I do.\u201d\u00a0 You know, \u201cLord, I want that.\u00a0 I want to throw the ball with my boy on the beach when he\u2019s 16.\u00a0 I want him to be able to take trips with me.\u00a0 I want him to be able to do those things; but You are better, ultimately.\u00a0 I want to voice to You that I want these things\u2014I desire these things, but I trust You.\u00a0 If You want to call me home, then, let\u2019s go; but I\u2019d like this\u2014\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of the rhythm I\u2019m in with the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>The irony is, even talking with Lauren, that day on the beach\u2014I mean\u2014I go back that night.\u00a0 I was like, \u201cHey, I had this thought.\u201d\u00a0 She was like, \u201cI was thinking the same thing on my chair, reading my book.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s become this point for us, where we\u2019re just really honest about, \u201cHey, this is a thought I had.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to hold that thought to myself.\u00a0 I want to share it with you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve found some real peace with each other in this journey by me not harboring all these fears or her not harboring all these fears\u2014kind of this joint rhythm of we want to express our desire for this before the Lord, while simultaneously saying, \u201cBut what You want is better than what we want.\u00a0 What You want will bring more joy than what we\u2019re saying we want.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you emotionally at the place where it\u2019s, \u201cLord, if You\u2019re ready to take him, let\u2019s go\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I mean, I want him here.\u00a0 I want him here.\u00a0 I\u2019m not at the place where, \u201cIf the Lord wants him, that\u2019s fine.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, I want him here.\u00a0 I want him here for decades, but I trust the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, again, we\u2019ve been listening to Matt and Lauren Chandler as they have been sharing with us\u2014bringing us into the middle of what life is like when you\u2019re living with a diagnosis like they\u2019ve received\u2014that Matt\u2019s brain tumor, his cancer\u2014which, by the way, everything is clear right now.\u00a0 The news is good today; but the doctors say, \u201cIt\u2019ll likely come back, and it\u2019ll likely kill you.\u201d\u00a0 Good reminder for us to be praying for Matt and Lauren\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and for strength, and for hope, and for faith for them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I agree.\u00a0 I encourage our listeners to do just that.\u00a0 When something happens like this, you take a step back, and you go, \u201cWhy is this happening to me?\u201d\u00a0 But the Scripture that I read, at the beginning of the broadcast, I want to read again\u2014First Peter, Chapter 4, verse 12, \u201cBeloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when\u201d\u2014when, when\u2014\u201cit comes upon you to test you as though something strange were happening to you.\u201d\u00a0 All of us are going to experience trials.\u00a0 We\u2019re all going to die.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to die of something.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe question is, \u201cWhen bad news comes, are you ready for it?\u201d\u00a0 Have you been building the faith muscle so that, at the time the bad news occurs, you\u2019re ready to flex it?\u00a0 Don\u2019t wait to start living when you get the news that you\u2019re dying!\u00a0 You need to start living today.\u00a0 Jesus Christ holds the keys to life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the message that Matt and Lauren Chandler have for all of us is, \u201cThese were lives that had been built upon the rock of Jesus Christ.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019d been obedient to Him.\u00a0 So, when the floods came and the winds blew and beat against their house, it didn\u2019t fall.\u00a0 Was it shaky?\u00a0 Was there fear?\u00a0 Was there doubt?\u00a0 Was there authentic processing?\u00a0 You better believe it.\u00a0 I can\u2019t say I would handle it as well as they did, but here\u2019s the question, \u201cEverybody is going to get that kind of news, at some point\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat are you basing life on?\u00a0 Who are you basing life on \u2014the words of Christ, in the Scripture, or of mankind?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to quote\u2014in my Bible\u2014across from 1 Peter 4, I have this quote by the British theologian, John Stott.\u00a0 He was speaking of Christians who don\u2019t have a biblical understanding of suffering.\u00a0 He said this, \u201cSome Christians grin too much, and they groan too little.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019re going through life, thinking that life is a lark and just having a good time.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 We\u2019re all going to groan.\u00a0 We\u2019re all going to groan.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to wish it upon yourself.\u00a0 It will happen; but you have to be ready, in the midst of the groaning, to walk by faith in Jesus Christ.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had the opportunity to hear Matt and Lauren share the story we\u2019ve been hearing this week when I was with them down in anniversary of that diagnosis.\u00a0 As of today, Matt\u2019s scans are clear.\u00a0 He is cancer-free, but the ordeal is not over for Matt.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re still fully-convinced that this takes my life and takes my life in under a decade.\u00a0 They\u2019re still fully-convinced of that.\u00a0 So, those are some of the things that you kind of have to continue to learn to walk in and learn to just kind of, once again, open-handedness in this.\u00a0 You know, \u201cLord, I want that.\u00a0 I want to throw the ball with my boy on the beach when he\u2019s 16.\u00a0 I want him to be able to take trips with me.\u00a0 I want him to be able to do those things; but You are better, ultimately.\u00a0 I want to voice to You that I trust You.\u00a0 If You want to call me home, then, let\u2019s go; but I\u2019d like this\u2014\u201d\u00a0 what\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, absolutely!\u00a0 It\u2019s like, \u201cLord!\u00a0 Do You not know what Your servant has done for You recently?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 It\u2019s totally arrogant.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s totally\u2014it is terrible theology.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s not the way God operates.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t give us what we deserve.\u00a0 If He did, we\u2019d be crispy critters.\u00a0 He\u2019d fry us because we don\u2019t deserve good things to happen to us all the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been hearing, this week, from Matt and Lauren Chandler.\u00a0 Matt is the pastor at the Village Church in Flower Mound, Texas, just north of the DFW Airport.\u00a0 He and Lauren have three children.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThree years ago, on Thanksgiving\u2014they are coming up on the third anniversary of Thanksgiving weekend\u2014where Matt had a seizure.\u00a0 The doctors found that seizure was because of a stage-three brain tumor\u2014a tumor that, first of all, they said, \u201cIt\u2019s got to be removed.\u201d\u00a0 Secondly, they said, \u201cThese are deadly tumors.\u201d\u00a0 They gave him a two to three years prognosis.\u00a0 They said, \u201cEven if we remove the tumor and do radiation, two to three years is the life expectancy.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I said, they are coming up on three years.\u00a0 Right now, the scans are clear; but I had the opportunity to talk with them about what it\u2019s like to live with this, in the back of your mind\u2014literally and figuratively\u2014as a couple.\u00a0 The reality that the doctors have said, \u201cThis is probably going to kill you sooner rather than later.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think a story like this, Bob, needs to have the bookends\u2014on the front and the back\u2014of Scripture.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to read the same passage twice because there are listeners who are going to identify, maybe not with the severity of the news that Matt Chandler heard, but with their own set of trials and suffering.\u00a0 First Peter, Chapter 4, verse 12, says, \u201cBeloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you as though something strange were happening to you; but rejoice in so far as you share Christ\u2019s sufferings that you may be able to rejoice and be glad when His glory is revealed.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll suffering has purpose.\u00a0 God has a reason for allowing suffering, for taking us through periods of suffering.\u00a0 Our character is refined; our character is revealed.\u00a0 As you are going to hear in Matt Chandler\u2019s story today and in his wife, Lauren, you\u2019re going to hear up-close and personal how two people\u2014two good people; but nonetheless, broken people\u2014process some life-shattering news.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ll hear how they deal honestly with that news, transparently; and yet, how they deal with it in faith at the same time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really, as a man who is not looking to escape\u2014I love my wife deeply, I love our children deeply.\u00a0 I love our family.\u00a0 I love coming home.\u00a0 It has been one of the great gifts of God and one of the great joys of my life to be given the family that I\u2019ve been given and the wife I\u2019ve been given.\u00a0 I don\u2019t just love my wife.\u00a0 I really enjoy Lauren\u2014one of my best friends.\u00a0 I\u2019m getting to like her more, and more, and more.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always liked her.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, to worry about, \u201cDo I get this future?\u00a0 Do I get to be 60 and sip coffee with my wife in the morning?\u00a0 Do I get to be an empty-nester?\u00a0 Do I get to come back around in my 50\u2019s and just have my wife to myself again, and have our home where we\u2019re not cleaning dirty diapers, and we\u2019re not having to magic-erase marker off the wall, and we can actually have nice stuff that doesn\u2019t get destroyed in a year-and-a-half\/two years, and really kind of enjoy one another?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut then, to look at this very real possibility of early\u2014I don\u2019t think anybody leaves early; right?\u00a0 But to leave, honestly, before I thought I would.\u00a0 It created in me\u2014really, what the Lord stirred up and showed me is that I had some idolatry in my life.\u00a0 I had some confidence in me and my life\u2014that, ultimately, is the kind of idolatry that you would never get in trouble for.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Lord had to just really graciously go, \u201cYou love them more than I do?\u201d or, \u201cYou\u2019re a better provider for your wife than I am?\u201d or, \u201cReally, all your hopes and dreams about your family are built around you?\u201d\u00a0 Those were the kind of gut-checks that the Lord was having with me in those early days.\u00a0 Then, one of the gifts He gave me\u2014one of the really sweet gifts He gave me is that it was alright to mourn and alright to ask Him for things that maybe sounded selfish.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, believe He\u2019s sovereign, love Him more than anyone or anything else in the universe\u2014but I want to walk my daughter down the aisle.\u00a0 I do.\u00a0 I want to see my boy become a man.\u00a0 I would love to see him get married.\u00a0 I\u2019d love to see him be a daddy.\u00a0 I\u2019d love to have grandbabies.\u00a0 I want those things.\u00a0 It\u2019s not idolatrous for me to want those things.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike everything else, I just need to have an open hand and say, \u201cYou gave me the breath.\u00a0 You gave me the life.\u00a0 It\u2019s Yours to do with as You please; but ultimately, I have these desires, and I don\u2019t think they are wicked desires.\u201d\u00a0 That was some of the internal wrestle that was occurring as I was staring death in the face; but simultaneously, really wanting, what I think are real gifts and joys that God gives in means of common grace.\u00a0 He gives to a lot of men\u2014even men who don\u2019t love Him.\u00a0 That was the wrestle that was going on in my heart.\u00a0 God was stripping from me maybe some closed handedness and maybe some pride in my life towards the kind of husband I was and the kind of father I was because if you asked me, \u201cI\u2019m doing it right.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo we have Bible studies in our house?\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 Do we worship as a family?\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 Do we pray as a family?\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 Do we engage our kids with grace and try to point them toward\u2014their hearts toward Christ, all the time?\u00a0 \u201cConstantly.\u201d\u00a0 Are we perfect?\u00a0 \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 But are we doing what the Lord would command us to do in the Scriptures?\u00a0 As a husband, am I?\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 As a father, am I?\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 Is my wife doing the same?\u00a0 \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I had\u2014God, help me.\u00a0 I had kind of, \u201cYou owe me this,\u201d in my heart.\u00a0 I had no idea it was there.\u00a0 I had no idea it was there.\u00a0 Really, that was some of the wrestle that I was going through in those early days.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Lauren, did you, in these days, start to think about, \u201cOkay, if we only have two years, I want to make sure we do Hawaii.\u00a0 I want to make sure we do this\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 We had already done Hawaii.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you start to go through the check list of, \u201cHere\u2019s what\u2019s on the bucket list\u201d?\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s get this done.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to get prepared for if I\u2019m going to be a single parent.\u201d\u00a0 Were you doing all that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I really believed that Matt had more than two to three years.\u00a0 I really felt like the Lord just said, \u201cToday.\u00a0 Let\u2019s just think about today.\u201d\u00a0 Honestly, it\u2019s interesting just what the years leading up to that had done\u2014the Lord had done in me.\u00a0 I had a couple of miscarriages.\u00a0 I\u2019d gone through some loss and\u2014where you go through that thing of, \u201cI don\u2019t want to hope, and I don\u2019t want to plan because then I\u2019ll be disappointed.\u201d\u00a0 But getting to just hope and just let that\u2014like Matt said, letting that hope be in the Lord and what He would have.\u00a0 Have these desires, but being open-handed about them; and then, trusting the Lord that He would just bring what we needed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen he was\u2014early on in his ministry\u2014we were newly-married.\u00a0 I would just get nervous when he\u2019d fly, and I\u2019d be home.\u00a0 I\u2019d be afraid if something happened to the airplane, and I was left single\u2014especially when I was pregnant with Audrey.\u00a0 In my mind, I\u2019d play out these scenarios.\u00a0 I would play out, \u201cOkay, who could take care of me?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 That ended up putting just this wedge between us in our relationship.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even realize it.\u00a0 The Lord convicted me of making this Plan B and showing me that I was not trusting Him by making up Plan B.\u00a0 I was really causing a rift between our relationship, in my heart and mind, by making a Plan B and not being completely where I am.\u00a0 So, I\u2019ve had years of guarding my heart and my mind against that when this comes into play.\u00a0 <br><br>We\u2019re doing this Galatians study\u2014Tim Keller\u2019s Galatians study\u2014with our church.\u00a0 He talks about\u2014in Galatians, where he says that He has prepared, in advance, the good works that we would do.\u00a0 He points out that He prepares us for these good works that He has coming for us.\u00a0 I think for so long I had read, \u201cOkay, He\u2019s got these good works, and I\u2019ve got to keep my eye out for them because I might miss them,\u201d \u2014but really focusing more on the Lord preparing us for these good works that He has for us to do.\u00a0 We\u2019re not going to miss them because He\u2019s shaping us so that we can walk through these good works\u2014and just really seeing those years, leading up to this trial, as preparation\u2014like He had been preparing me to deal with \u201ctwo to three years\u201d to just be, \u201cNow,\u201d\u2014and to not have a Plan B, but to just trust the Lord for each day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUltimately, what I get, because I\u2019m His, is Him.\u00a0 That\u2019s really the only hope that lasts.\u00a0 That\u2019s only the desire that\u2019s fulfilled.\u00a0 It says, \u201cA hope deferred makes the heart sick;\u201d but there is a place where I can put hope where it\u2019s not deferred.\u00a0 It\u2019s in Jesus\u2014that there is a desire that can be fulfilled.\u00a0 It\u2019s intimacy with Him and knowing Him.\u00a0 Whether that means get two to three years with my husband or I get 20 to 30 years with him, just trusting Him with each day and not getting too far ahead of Him and of the grace that\u2019s for that day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Matt, when you get a headache now\u2014when you start to get a headache, do you start to go\u2014?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 My doctors had been on\u2014like every one of them\u2014have been brilliant in coaching me through this.\u00a0 What I mean by that is\u2014yes, anytime the weather changes, anytime the pollen kicks up in the air, anytime I get a headache, I go, \u201cOh, man!\u00a0 Is this it?\u00a0 Here we go.\u201d\u00a0 Finally, I went and had a scan\u2014a scheduled scan\u2014and it was clear.\u00a0 I was, \u201cPhew!\u201d\u00a0 I just talked to my neuro-oncologist and said, \u201cHey, I get\u201d\u2014I have to remember, \u201cI got headaches before this.\u00a0 I had some allergies before this,\u201d because every time I get a headache now, every time I\u2019m fatigued now\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the ways that the tumor was signaling\u2014that we were unaware of before the seizure\u2014was I\u2019d kind of become anti-social.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to go to parties.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to go to events with a lot of people.\u00a0 I just thought the growth of the church and the pace of life that we had been living had made me a bit of a recluse, but what was happening was the tumor and where it was located was really making me kind of withdraw.\u00a0 So, anytime I feel like that, anytime Lauren\u2019s like \u201cHey, what do you think about going to this deal with the Bleakers and the Pattersons?\u201d\u2014good friends of ours\u2014and I go, \u201cI don\u2019t really want to do that.\u201d\u00a0 I find myself now going, \u201cOh, no, no.\u201d \u2014\u201cLet\u2019s do it.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go do it.\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did have to figure out how to\u2014well, what we call it is \u201cthe new normal\u201d.\u00a0 I had to figure out the new normal.\u00a0 I have to preach to myself far more.\u00a0 Another really residual effect emotionally and spiritually from this journey is you just have morbid thoughts, all of the time.\u00a0 We were on vacation last year in Florida, and we\u2019re playing on the beach.\u00a0 My son and I are just kind of digging in the sand.\u00a0 He\u2019s five at the time.\u00a0 I see this teenage boy throwing the football with his dad.\u00a0 I mean, I have the thought, \u201cI wonder if I get to do that.\u201d\u00a0 I would have never had that thought before.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>They opened up a new hospital here in town\u2014a really nice kind of hospital, right down from our church.\u00a0 When they opened it, I thought, \u201cI wonder if I\u2019m going to die there.\u201d\u00a0 Those are the kinds of thoughts that you are constantly having now\u2014that I have to kind of hold in check.\u00a0 My wife laughs at me because she\u2019s like, \u201cWhat if we all die there?\u00a0 What if everybody we know\u2014maybe that\u2019s where we all go and die?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr on vacation, we took some pictures with some friends.\u00a0 In my mind, I\u2019m like, \u201cHey, in that little video-thing they play at funerals, is this going to be one of those pictures?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s just like you\u2019re stuck in that line of thinking because it\u2019s very real.\u00a0 In some strange ways, it\u2019s what Moses asked God for, \u201cTeach me to number my days.\u201d\u00a0 God\u2019s kind of given this to us as a gift because I\u2019ve still got to actively go in for scans regularly.\u00a0 They\u2019re still fully-convinced that this takes my life and takes my life in under a decade.\u00a0 They\u2019re still fully-convinced of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, those are some of the things that you kind of have to continue to learn to walk in and learn to just kind of\u2014once again, open-handedness\u2014 \u201cMaybe I don\u2019t, but maybe I do.\u201d\u00a0 You know, \u201cLord, I want that.\u00a0 I want to throw the ball with my boy on the beach when he\u2019s 16.\u00a0 I want him to be able to take trips with me.\u00a0 I want him to be able to do those things; but You are better, ultimately.\u00a0 I want to voice to You that I want these things\u2014I desire these things, but I trust You.\u00a0 If You want to call me home, then, let\u2019s go; but I\u2019d like this\u2014\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of the rhythm I\u2019m in with the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>The irony is, even talking with Lauren, that day on the beach\u2014I mean\u2014I go back that night.\u00a0 I was like, \u201cHey, I had this thought.\u201d\u00a0 She was like, \u201cI was thinking the same thing on my chair, reading my book.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s become this point for us, where we\u2019re just really honest about, \u201cHey, this is a thought I had.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to hold that thought to myself.\u00a0 I want to share it with you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve found some real peace with each other in this journey by me not harboring all these fears or her not harboring all these fears\u2014kind of this joint rhythm of we want to express our desire for this before the Lord, while simultaneously saying, \u201cBut what You want is better than what we want.\u00a0 What You want will bring more joy than what we\u2019re saying we want.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you emotionally at the place where it\u2019s, \u201cLord, if You\u2019re ready to take him, let\u2019s go\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I mean, I want him here.\u00a0 I want him here.\u00a0 I\u2019m not at the place where, \u201cIf the Lord wants him, that\u2019s fine.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, I want him here.\u00a0 I want him here for decades, but I trust the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, again, we\u2019ve been listening to Matt and Lauren Chandler as they have been sharing with us\u2014bringing us into the middle of what life is like when you\u2019re living with a diagnosis like they\u2019ve received\u2014that Matt\u2019s brain tumor, his cancer\u2014which, by the way, everything is clear right now.\u00a0 The news is good today; but the doctors say, \u201cIt\u2019ll likely come back, and it\u2019ll likely kill you.\u201d\u00a0 Good reminder for us to be praying for Matt and Lauren\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and for strength, and for hope, and for faith for them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I agree.\u00a0 I encourage our listeners to do just that.\u00a0 When something happens like this, you take a step back, and you go, \u201cWhy is this happening to me?\u201d\u00a0 But the Scripture that I read, at the beginning of the broadcast, I want to read again\u2014First Peter, Chapter 4, verse 12, \u201cBeloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when\u201d\u2014when, when\u2014\u201cit comes upon you to test you as though something strange were happening to you.\u201d\u00a0 All of us are going to experience trials.\u00a0 We\u2019re all going to die.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to die of something.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe question is, \u201cWhen bad news comes, are you ready for it?\u201d\u00a0 Have you been building the faith muscle so that, at the time the bad news occurs, you\u2019re ready to flex it?\u00a0 Don\u2019t wait to start living when you get the news that you\u2019re dying!\u00a0 You need to start living today.\u00a0 Jesus Christ holds the keys to life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the message that Matt and Lauren Chandler have for all of us is, \u201cThese were lives that had been built upon the rock of Jesus Christ.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019d been obedient to Him.\u00a0 So, when the floods came and the winds blew and beat against their house, it didn\u2019t fall.\u00a0 Was it shaky?\u00a0 Was there fear?\u00a0 Was there doubt?\u00a0 Was there authentic processing?\u00a0 You better believe it.\u00a0 I can\u2019t say I would handle it as well as they did, but here\u2019s the question, \u201cEverybody is going to get that kind of news, at some point\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat are you basing life on?\u00a0 Who are you basing life on \u2014the words of Christ, in the Scripture, or of mankind?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to quote\u2014in my Bible\u2014across from 1 Peter 4, I have this quote by the British theologian, John Stott.\u00a0 He was speaking of Christians who don\u2019t have a biblical understanding of suffering.\u00a0 He said this, \u201cSome Christians grin too much, and they groan too little.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019re going through life, thinking that life is a lark and just having a good time.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 We\u2019re all going to groan.\u00a0 We\u2019re all going to groan.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to wish it upon yourself.\u00a0 It will happen; but you have to be ready, in the midst of the groaning, to walk by faith in Jesus Christ.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had the opportunity to hear Matt and Lauren share the story we\u2019ve been hearing this week when I was with them down in
