Worth area.\u00a0 <br><br>I mean, here is a guy in the prime of his life.\u00a0 Is he supposed to count it all joy when he hears news like that?\u00a0 The Scripture says, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had the opportunity to talk with Matt and Lauren about this event\u2014that took place, now, almost three years ago when I was down in Dallas, meeting with Matt about the Stepping Up\u2122 Super Saturdayevent that is going to take place on February 2, 2013.\u00a0 That\u2019s the day before the Super Bowl, when we are rallying men, all around the country, to participate in a one-day video event for men\u2014a rally point for guys to call them to step up and be men.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhile I was there, I asked if we could just have a conversation about Matt\u2019s brain tumor\u2014about how they\u2019re doing, about the ongoing treatment, and where they are today.\u00a0 This week, we\u2019re going to let our listeners hear Matt and Lauren share the story and give us an update on how they\u2019re doing.\u00a0 Rather than leaving it as a cliffhanger, I think we can go ahead and say all of the news right now is very good.\u00a0 All of the scans are clear, and there\u2019s no cancer that the doctors can find in Matt\u2019s body.\u00a0 We\u2019re grateful for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think listening to his story is going to bring some perspective to listeners.\u00a0 Let\u2019s listen to Matt Chandler.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 On Thanksgiving morning 2009, I woke up a little bit later than Lauren.\u00a0 Lauren had been in the kitchen, kind of preparing breakfast and some dishes to take to our in-laws.\u00a0 We were going to do Thanksgiving dinner with her parents.\u00a0 They live just a few blocks from us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got up and poured myself a cup of coffee and was headed to my chair\u2014think I\u2019ll mention I have a chair\u2014then, ask Lauren if I could do anything to help.\u00a0 She said I could feed Norah, our youngest daughter.\u00a0 Norah was about six months at the time, still on the bottle.\u00a0 I made a bottle, and sat down with Norah and fed her the bottle, and burped her, and put her in her Johnny Jump Up<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014which is kind of this springy contraption that, honestly, looks like a blast, that hangs in a door frame.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I put her in that, and she immediately began to jump.\u00a0 I was headed back to my chair.\u00a0 Then, I\u2019m probably just going to have to default to Lauren here because I don\u2019t have any other memory of what happens next.\u00a0 I wake up in the hospital, but Lauren can kind of fill in the gap.\u00a0 I only know the story because I\u2019ve been told it, whereas she experienced it live in HD.\u00a0 So, you want to pick up from here?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 Like Matt said, I was getting some dishes ready in the kitchen while he and the kids were in the living room.\u00a0 I could just hear the normal sounds of a normal morning and could hear the kids playing, could hear the TV humming, could hear Norah just bouncing.\u00a0 All of a sudden, I hear just this crash that interrupts the normal sounds.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was just waiting to hear Matt say, \u201cDon\u2019t worry about it, Lauren.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got it,\u201d \u2014waiting to hear something.\u00a0 The only thing that kind of breaks the silence is Audrey saying, \u201cDad!\u00a0 Dad, are you okay?\u201d\u00a0 I walk into the living room.\u00a0 The kids are kind of sitting on the couch.\u00a0 All looks normal.\u00a0 Then, I come around the side of the couch.\u00a0 I see Matt on the floor, just in a grand maul seizure\u2014just his whole body shaking.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that moment\u2014I had taken a lifeguarding class in college\u2014in that moment, I remembered what I was supposed to do with a victim who was seizing.\u00a0 I pulled him away from the edge of the fireplace, yelling at the poor kids to go get dressed, telling Audrey to go get my phone.\u00a0 I yell at Audrey a couple of times to get dressed.\u00a0 Finally, she\u2019s like, \u201cI\u2019m already dressed, Mom!\u201d\u00a0 I felt so badly for her, but kind of using my body to shield the kids from Matt and him shaking.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Finally, Audrey brings me my phone.\u00a0 I call 9-1-1.\u00a0 We\u2019re really close to the fire station.\u00a0 I can hear the sirens go on.\u00a0 The EMT\u2019s come in.\u00a0 I call my parents.\u00a0 I call Matt\u2019s mom just to say\u2014tell them what\u2019s going on.\u00a0 My parents are there\u2014like Matt said\u2014they live just around the corner\u2014within seconds.\u00a0 Audrey goes upstairs with my mom, and Mom\u2019s just comforting her.\u00a0 I\u2019m just sitting there in the living room with these EMT\u2019s coming around, examining Matt.\u00a0\u00a0 By that time, Matt had just stopped seizing and was just really breathing heavily, almost kind of like a snore.\u00a0 Audrey and Reid talk about, \u201cHow when Daddy was snoring funny.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s all they remember of this seizure; and they remember the EMT\u2019s coming in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just remember looking down at Matt and seeing him just in the most vulnerable state I\u2019d ever seen him in\u2014which was difficult for me because he\u2019s always been just the rock and knowing what to do in an emergency.\u00a0 In these unfamiliar situations, he was who I would just cling to and really count on, just as support and guidance; and here he was\u2014 just vulnerable and incapacitated.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s conscious at this point but not lucid.\u00a0 He kind of looks at me but not\u2014but kind of looks through me.\u00a0 There is no recognition in his eyes when he looks at me.\u00a0 So, we get in the ambulance.\u00a0 I\u2019m sitting in the front; and I\u2019m just wondering, \u201cIs this what my life\u2014am I going to have a husband who will no longer know who I am\u2014that I\u2019ll have just a brain-damaged husband for the rest of my life?\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how long this is going to last\u2014effective of whatever just happened.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI hear just this wrestling going on in the back of the truck.\u00a0 I was like, \u201cWhat in the world?\u201d\u00a0 I can hear this one EMT saying, \u201cSir!\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to help you.\u00a0 Sir!\u00a0 Calm down.\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to help you.\u201d\u00a0 He had punched one of the EMT\u2019s because they were trying to restrain him, and calm him down, and give him some drugs, start an IV.\u00a0 He was just not cooperating.\u00a0 So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Story of my life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren: <\/strong>\u00a0\u2014they finally give him something.\u00a0 They were able to stick something in his arm to calm him down.\u00a0 I go back into the front of the ambulance, get to the emergency room.\u00a0 They unload him.\u00a0 It\u2019s the first time he recognizes me.\u00a0 He\u2019s finally lucid; and he\u2019s like, \u201cWhat happened?!\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, you had a seizure, Hon.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 He starts apologizing.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cAre you kidding me?\u00a0 Why are you apologizing?\u00a0 You had no control over this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey took him back to the CT scan, and they see something on the CT scan.\u00a0 So, they put him in for an MRI.\u00a0 They see something on the MRI.\u00a0 The doctor comes in and just, really, compassionately, sits down at Matt\u2019s side and says, \u201cThere\u2019s a mass in your brain that we think caused the seizure.\u00a0 You need to contact a neurosurgeon and get this checked out.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So, really, where I pick back up is post-CT scan.\u00a0 I have no memory of the CT scan at all, but I do remember them coming in and talking about a shadow that they saw in the CT scan and that they wanted to do an MRI.\u00a0 So, did the MRI; and then, remember the doctor coming in and sitting down.\u00a0 He was very gracious, and gentle, and wasn\u2019t abrupt, wasn\u2019t\u2014just kind of warm and said, \u201cYou\u2019ve got a mass, a small mass, in your right frontal lobe.\u00a0 It\u2019s our recommendation that you go see someone about this.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>He was encouraging, honestly, \u201cHey, this looks encapsulated.\u00a0 This looks\u201d\u2014so, we, through a series of connections, decided upon Dr. Barnett at Baylor downtown.\u00a0 Went and saw Dr. Barnett on Tuesday.\u00a0 The seizure happens Thursday; then, on Tuesday, we go see Dr. Barnett.\u00a0 <br><br>I thought, and some people who had seen the scan said, that it looked like it was just going to be like some sort of low-grade glioma; and they were going to have to watch it.\u00a0 I was probably going to have to be on anti-seizure meds.\u00a0 So, going into Tuesday, my expectation was to hear those kinds of things.\u00a0 We walk into Barnett\u2019s office, sit down.\u00a0 He pulls up that scan; and, I mean, very quickly says, \u201cThis looks bad.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have to do surgery as soon as we can.\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019ve made a hole for you on Friday.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, I felt like I got punched in the soul.\u00a0 That was the first time, maybe in my life, that it felt like the floor dropped out from underneath me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, to\u2014I guess\u2014try to encourage me, he said, \u201cI know a guy\u2014we had a patient here who had a glioblastoma and made it ten years.\u201d\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m going, \u201cThat\u2019s encouragement?!\u00a0 I\u2019m 36, and the encouragement you have for me is that maybe I\u2019ve got another 10 years.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey start to kind of walk through, \u201cThis is maybe the dangers of having a craniotomy and the right frontal lobe spatial reasoning.\u201d\u00a0 Well, I mean, that\u2019s what I do.\u00a0 I look at information, and let the Spirit kind of put it in different parts of my mind, and then, proclaim it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019re going into, now, eight days after the seizure and an eight-hour craniotomy.\u00a0 That pushes us up to that point.\u00a0 We geared up for surgery.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 When Dr. Barnett sat us down, and showed us those scans, and said, \u201cThis is something that needs to be dealt with and quickly,\u201d I just had this conviction that it was supposed\u2014we needed to remove it.\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you move to fear at all?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I feared in those days\u2014I feared more that a seizure would happen again.\u00a0 That was traumatic to see him helpless; but as far as the brain surgery goes, up until he had the surgery, there wasn\u2019t fear.\u00a0 I can only explain that by the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 Like I said, I think he insulated my mind of, \u201cLet\u2019s just\u2014today.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 I headed into the surgery\u2014I had several concerns.\u00a0 So, I can\u2014I mean\u2014I can still name them.\u00a0 They still\u2014because this isn\u2019t over, actually.\u00a0 They are still things that I have to continually lay at the feet of the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne is that I would come through, but I wouldn\u2019t be me anymore\u2014that I would come through and not be the father that I am to my kids now, that I wouldn\u2019t be the husband that I am to my wife right now\u2014that here they would be stuck with this new guy, and all of the hopes that were in my heart about what God might do in me and through me to reestablish a line in the Chandler\u2019s bloodline of men who loved Him, served Him, and followed Him, and served their families well might be eradicated.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPost-surgery\u2014really, after the surgery was over\u2014I didn\u2019t have a lot of residual effects.\u00a0 I had some weakness on my left side, but it was pretty clear, early on, that I was still in there.\u00a0 I had a flat effect, which means I wouldn\u2019t\u2014I wouldn\u2019t respond\u2014even if I was making a joke, I would do it with a real kind of just flat, sober-kind of look on my face.\u00a0 But every day, I was getting stronger.\u00a0 Every day, I was getting\u2014my personality was returning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFinally, it moved to, \u201cHey, we\u2019re going to let you know what we\u2019ve found.\u201d\u00a0 Correct me if I\u2019m wrong here\u2014the pitch was, \u201cWhy don\u2019t\u2019 you get some family members and some friends?\u00a0 Let\u2019s meet up at my office and we\u2019ll go through\u2014\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Now, Lauren already knew the diagnosis.\u00a0 They told Lauren before they told me.\u00a0 Then, bless Lauren\u2019s heart.\u00a0 Lauren decided to not tell anyone else and just kind of carry that on herself\u2014outside of Brian Miller, who is chairman of our elders, who also knew, because she felt like it would have been just a disrespectful thing for <em>everyone<\/em> in the world to know but me.\u00a0 So, until I knew, she just wasn\u2019t going\u2014she didn\u2019t tell my parents.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t tell her parents\u2014just what a beast of a woman to be able to carry that by herself for that period of time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dr. Barnett had Brian Miller, the chairman of our elders and me meet him in the base\u2014in a conference room in the basement of the hospital.\u00a0 He told me anaplastic oligodendroglioma, which means it\u2019s malignant\u2014it\u2019s grade three.\u00a0 So, it\u2019s not the absolute worst form\u2014glioblastoma would be the most aggressive form of brain tumors\u2014but still life-threatening.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember walking out of that room.\u00a0 We have friends and family there, and seeing couples together and thinking\u2014it just\u2014it stung to see even just my parents sitting together, thinking that here they are decades into marriage, decades into life with grandbabies, together.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cThat is not guaranteed for me;\u201d and I just found that out\u2014that very well, I could be half-a-couple in the next two to three years.\u00a0 So, that, for me, was the hardest part of the whole process\u2014harder than finding out that he had a brain tumor, harder than the seizure, harder than chemo or radiation\u2014but just that point, right there, was the toughest.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 When we walked into Dr. Barnett\u2019s office, I remember he opened up the envelope.\u00a0 I think they took seven swatches.\u00a0 He basically starts walking through the swatches.\u00a0 This was grade one; this is grade one.\u00a0 This was grade two; this was grade two.\u00a0 This was\u2014and then, you get to three.\u00a0 Now, we\u2019re in anaplastic\u2014now, we\u2019re in malignant, non-encapsulated.\u00a0 \u201cThis will kill you.\u201d\u00a0 The question now is, \u201cWhen?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt three, was bad news\u2014it wasn\u2019t good news.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t what we were hoping for.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t\u2014and I don\u2019t know if it was post-surgery stuff or if it was\u2014but I shed some tears and then, geared up.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how else to explain it.\u00a0 I just felt like I shed some tears; and then, we were like, \u201cOkay, let\u2019s see what the Lord is going to do.\u201d\u00a0 I was just having a strange sense of confidence that this was going to be alright\u2014maybe that was naivety.\u00a0 I know the seven steps\u2014maybe this is denial.\u00a0 Maybe this is\u2014you know?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUltimately, from there, we went out to a conference room, where some people on staff\u2014some very good friends of mine were.\u00a0 We were able to sit down and give them the news.\u00a0 At this point, still no one has said to me, \u201cTwo to three years.\u201d\u00a0 No one\u2019s said that to me.\u00a0 They\u2019ve just said this is bad news.\u00a0 This is going to be a fight and that there is going to be radiation\/chemo in my future.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>For whatever reason, the Lord kind of zoomed me in on, \u201cWe\u2019ve got a fight on our hands.\u00a0 So, let\u2019s fight.\u201d\u00a0 I remember, back in those days, I just really had Nehemiah\u2019s prayer, \u201cNow, Lord, strengthen our hands,\u201d in my heart and head.\u00a0 That had been my prayer, \u201cStrengthen my hands.\u00a0 Let me do well.\u00a0 Let me glorify You well in this.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of that night.\u00a0 Then, we headed home.\u00a0 We were going to start radiation, almost immediately after that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was partly why they told me before him\u2014was so we could get started getting all that lined up\u2014 the neuro-oncologist said.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve been listening to Matt and Lauren Chandler from the Village Church in Dallas, Texas, as they\u2019ve been reflecting on a tough road that God put them on, almost three years ago.\u00a0 It\u2019s a road where they\u2019ve learned to walk by faith in a way that you can\u2019t learn it any other way than to go through a valley like that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the issue.\u00a0 Are you going to believe the Scriptures in a set of circumstances like they were facing?\u00a0 I want to reread the passage I read at the beginning of the broadcast because, again, there is a listener who needs to hear this again.\u00a0 That listener needs to embrace this passage.\u00a0 The key word, Bob, is the word you used, \u201cby faith\u201d.\u00a0 It\u2019s by faith.\u00a0 \u201cCount it all joy, brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.\u00a0 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome time ago, I had lunch with a businessman.\u00a0 He told me a story.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI was meeting with a Christian leader.\u00a0 I told the Christian leader that my life was really pretty easy\u2014that I really hadn\u2019t ever really endured any major suffering in my life.\u201d\u00a0 He said the Christian leader looked me in the eye and said, \u201cYou will.\u00a0 You will.\u201d\u00a0 He said it wasn\u2019t a matter of a few months before he was facing a number of trials in his life that he needed to step up and face by faith.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe issue is not <em>if<\/em> you\u2019re going to encounter various trials that test your faith, that prove your faith.\u00a0 The issue is you <em>will <\/em>face those trials.\u00a0 You will run into circumstances that remind you\u2014you\u2019re not God, and He is.\u00a0 The issue is, \u201cWill you respond in faith when those circumstances occur?\u00a0 Will you trust God that He knows what He\u2019s doing and that He is a God who loves you and who can be trusted in any and every circumstance?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We still have more to hear from Matt and Lauren this week.\u00a0 I had the opportunity to have this conversation with them, and to years ago that Pastor Matt Chandler was taken to the hospital after having a seizure.\u00a0 He did not expect to hear what he eventually heard.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 I thought, and some people who had seen the scan said, that it looked like it was just going to be like some sort of low-grade glioma; and they were going to have to watch it.\u00a0 I was probably going to have to be on anti-seizure meds.\u00a0 So, going into Tuesday, my expectation was to hear those kinds of things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe walk into Barnett\u2019s office, sit down.\u00a0 He pulls up that scan; and, I mean, very quickly says, \u201cThis looks bad.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, I felt like I got punched in the soul.\u00a0 That was the first time, maybe in my life, that it felt like the floor dropped out from underneath me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 wondering\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in your case, it was whether your wife was going to make it back when Barbara\u2014her heart was racing 300 beats a minute; right?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 As we start today\u2019s broadcast, I just have to read a verse because there is a listener who needs to hear this verse today.\u00a0 James, Chapter 1, verse 2, \u201cCount it all joy, brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.\u00a0 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTrials come in all kinds of packages.\u00a0 The one we\u2019re going to hear about today is a big package.\u00a0 Matt Chandler\u2014we\u2019re coming up on the third-year anniversary, this Thanksgiving, of receiving news that he was diagnosed with brain cancer and was given two to three years to live by the doctor.\u00a0 He had a brand-new baby joining two other children.\u00a0 He and his wife Lauren are in ministry at the Village Church, north of the Dallas\/Ft. Worth area.\u00a0 <br><br>I mean, here is a guy in the prime of his life.\u00a0 Is he supposed to count it all joy when he hears news like that?\u00a0 The Scripture says, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had the opportunity to talk with Matt and Lauren about this event\u2014that took place, now, almost three years ago when I was down in Dallas, meeting with Matt about the Stepping Up\u2122 Super Saturdayevent that is going to take place on February 2, 2013.\u00a0 That\u2019s the day before the Super Bowl, when we are rallying men, all around the country, to participate in a one-day video event for men\u2014a rally point for guys to call them to step up and be men.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhile I was there, I asked if we could just have a conversation about Matt\u2019s brain tumor\u2014about how they\u2019re doing, about the ongoing treatment, and where they are today.\u00a0 This week, we\u2019re going to let our listeners hear Matt and Lauren share the story and give us an update on how they\u2019re doing.\u00a0 Rather than leaving it as a cliffhanger, I think we can go ahead and say all of the news right now is very good.\u00a0 All of the scans are clear, and there\u2019s no cancer that the doctors can find in Matt\u2019s body.\u00a0 We\u2019re grateful for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think listening to his story is going to bring some perspective to listeners.\u00a0 Let\u2019s listen to Matt Chandler.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 On Thanksgiving morning 2009, I woke up a little bit later than Lauren.\u00a0 Lauren had been in the kitchen, kind of preparing breakfast and some dishes to take to our in-laws.\u00a0 We were going to do Thanksgiving dinner with her parents.\u00a0 They live just a few blocks from us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got up and poured myself a cup of coffee and was headed to my chair\u2014think I\u2019ll mention I have a chair\u2014then, ask Lauren if I could do anything to help.\u00a0 She said I could feed Norah, our youngest daughter.\u00a0 Norah was about six months at the time, still on the bottle.\u00a0 I made a bottle, and sat down with Norah and fed her the bottle, and burped her, and put her in her Johnny Jump Up<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2014which is kind of this springy contraption that, honestly, looks like a blast, that hangs in a door frame.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I put her in that, and she immediately began to jump.\u00a0 I was headed back to my chair.\u00a0 Then, I\u2019m probably just going to have to default to Lauren here because I don\u2019t have any other memory of what happens next.\u00a0 I wake up in the hospital, but Lauren can kind of fill in the gap.\u00a0 I only know the story because I\u2019ve been told it, whereas she experienced it live in HD.\u00a0 So, you want to pick up from here?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 Like Matt said, I was getting some dishes ready in the kitchen while he and the kids were in the living room.\u00a0 I could just hear the normal sounds of a normal morning and could hear the kids playing, could hear the TV humming, could hear Norah just bouncing.\u00a0 All of a sudden, I hear just this crash that interrupts the normal sounds.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was just waiting to hear Matt say, \u201cDon\u2019t worry about it, Lauren.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got it,\u201d \u2014waiting to hear something.\u00a0 The only thing that kind of breaks the silence is Audrey saying, \u201cDad!\u00a0 Dad, are you okay?\u201d\u00a0 I walk into the living room.\u00a0 The kids are kind of sitting on the couch.\u00a0 All looks normal.\u00a0 Then, I come around the side of the couch.\u00a0 I see Matt on the floor, just in a grand maul seizure\u2014just his whole body shaking.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that moment\u2014I had taken a lifeguarding class in college\u2014in that moment, I remembered what I was supposed to do with a victim who was seizing.\u00a0 I pulled him away from the edge of the fireplace, yelling at the poor kids to go get dressed, telling Audrey to go get my phone.\u00a0 I yell at Audrey a couple of times to get dressed.\u00a0 Finally, she\u2019s like, \u201cI\u2019m already dressed, Mom!\u201d\u00a0 I felt so badly for her, but kind of using my body to shield the kids from Matt and him shaking.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Finally, Audrey brings me my phone.\u00a0 I call 9-1-1.\u00a0 We\u2019re really close to the fire station.\u00a0 I can hear the sirens go on.\u00a0 The EMT\u2019s come in.\u00a0 I call my parents.\u00a0 I call Matt\u2019s mom just to say\u2014tell them what\u2019s going on.\u00a0 My parents are there\u2014like Matt said\u2014they live just around the corner\u2014within seconds.\u00a0 Audrey goes upstairs with my mom, and Mom\u2019s just comforting her.\u00a0 I\u2019m just sitting there in the living room with these EMT\u2019s coming around, examining Matt.\u00a0\u00a0 By that time, Matt had just stopped seizing and was just really breathing heavily, almost kind of like a snore.\u00a0 Audrey and Reid talk about, \u201cHow when Daddy was snoring funny.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s all they remember of this seizure; and they remember the EMT\u2019s coming in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just remember looking down at Matt and seeing him just in the most vulnerable state I\u2019d ever seen him in\u2014which was difficult for me because he\u2019s always been just the rock and knowing what to do in an emergency.\u00a0 In these unfamiliar situations, he was who I would just cling to and really count on, just as support and guidance; and here he was\u2014 just vulnerable and incapacitated.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s conscious at this point but not lucid.\u00a0 He kind of looks at me but not\u2014but kind of looks through me.\u00a0 There is no recognition in his eyes when he looks at me.\u00a0 So, we get in the ambulance.\u00a0 I\u2019m sitting in the front; and I\u2019m just wondering, \u201cIs this what my life\u2014am I going to have a husband who will no longer know who I am\u2014that I\u2019ll have just a brain-damaged husband for the rest of my life?\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how long this is going to last\u2014effective of whatever just happened.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI hear just this wrestling going on in the back of the truck.\u00a0 I was like, \u201cWhat in the world?\u201d\u00a0 I can hear this one EMT saying, \u201cSir!\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to help you.\u00a0 Sir!\u00a0 Calm down.\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to help you.\u201d\u00a0 He had punched one of the EMT\u2019s because they were trying to restrain him, and calm him down, and give him some drugs, start an IV.\u00a0 He was just not cooperating.\u00a0 So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Story of my life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren: <\/strong>\u00a0\u2014they finally give him something.\u00a0 They were able to stick something in his arm to calm him down.\u00a0 I go back into the front of the ambulance, get to the emergency room.\u00a0 They unload him.\u00a0 It\u2019s the first time he recognizes me.\u00a0 He\u2019s finally lucid; and he\u2019s like, \u201cWhat happened?!\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, you had a seizure, Hon.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 He starts apologizing.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cAre you kidding me?\u00a0 Why are you apologizing?\u00a0 You had no control over this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey took him back to the CT scan, and they see something on the CT scan.\u00a0 So, they put him in for an MRI.\u00a0 They see something on the MRI.\u00a0 The doctor comes in and just, really, compassionately, sits down at Matt\u2019s side and says, \u201cThere\u2019s a mass in your brain that we think caused the seizure.\u00a0 You need to contact a neurosurgeon and get this checked out.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So, really, where I pick back up is post-CT scan.\u00a0 I have no memory of the CT scan at all, but I do remember them coming in and talking about a shadow that they saw in the CT scan and that they wanted to do an MRI.\u00a0 So, did the MRI; and then, remember the doctor coming in and sitting down.\u00a0 He was very gracious, and gentle, and wasn\u2019t abrupt, wasn\u2019t\u2014just kind of warm and said, \u201cYou\u2019ve got a mass, a small mass, in your right frontal lobe.\u00a0 It\u2019s our recommendation that you go see someone about this.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>He was encouraging, honestly, \u201cHey, this looks encapsulated.\u00a0 This looks\u201d\u2014so, we, through a series of connections, decided upon Dr. Barnett at Baylor downtown.\u00a0 Went and saw Dr. Barnett on Tuesday.\u00a0 The seizure happens Thursday; then, on Tuesday, we go see Dr. Barnett.\u00a0 <br><br>I thought, and some people who had seen the scan said, that it looked like it was just going to be like some sort of low-grade glioma; and they were going to have to watch it.\u00a0 I was probably going to have to be on anti-seizure meds.\u00a0 So, going into Tuesday, my expectation was to hear those kinds of things.\u00a0 We walk into Barnett\u2019s office, sit down.\u00a0 He pulls up that scan; and, I mean, very quickly says, \u201cThis looks bad.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have to do surgery as soon as we can.\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019ve made a hole for you on Friday.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, I felt like I got punched in the soul.\u00a0 That was the first time, maybe in my life, that it felt like the floor dropped out from underneath me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, to\u2014I guess\u2014try to encourage me, he said, \u201cI know a guy\u2014we had a patient here who had a glioblastoma and made it ten years.\u201d\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m going, \u201cThat\u2019s encouragement?!\u00a0 I\u2019m 36, and the encouragement you have for me is that maybe I\u2019ve got another 10 years.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey start to kind of walk through, \u201cThis is maybe the dangers of having a craniotomy and the right frontal lobe spatial reasoning.\u201d\u00a0 Well, I mean, that\u2019s what I do.\u00a0 I look at information, and let the Spirit kind of put it in different parts of my mind, and then, proclaim it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019re going into, now, eight days after the seizure and an eight-hour craniotomy.\u00a0 That pushes us up to that point.\u00a0 We geared up for surgery.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 When Dr. Barnett sat us down, and showed us those scans, and said, \u201cThis is something that needs to be dealt with and quickly,\u201d I just had this conviction that it was supposed\u2014we needed to remove it.\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you move to fear at all?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I feared in those days\u2014I feared more that a seizure would happen again.\u00a0 That was traumatic to see him helpless; but as far as the brain surgery goes, up until he had the surgery, there wasn\u2019t fear.\u00a0 I can only explain that by the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 Like I said, I think he insulated my mind of, \u201cLet\u2019s just\u2014today.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 I headed into the surgery\u2014I had several concerns.\u00a0 So, I can\u2014I mean\u2014I can still name them.\u00a0 They still\u2014because this isn\u2019t over, actually.\u00a0 They are still things that I have to continually lay at the feet of the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne is that I would come through, but I wouldn\u2019t be me anymore\u2014that I would come through and not be the father that I am to my kids now, that I wouldn\u2019t be the husband that I am to my wife right now\u2014that here they would be stuck with this new guy, and all of the hopes that were in my heart about what God might do in me and through me to reestablish a line in the Chandler\u2019s bloodline of men who loved Him, served Him, and followed Him, and served their families well might be eradicated.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPost-surgery\u2014really, after the surgery was over\u2014I didn\u2019t have a lot of residual effects.\u00a0 I had some weakness on my left side, but it was pretty clear, early on, that I was still in there.\u00a0 I had a flat effect, which means I wouldn\u2019t\u2014I wouldn\u2019t respond\u2014even if I was making a joke, I would do it with a real kind of just flat, sober-kind of look on my face.\u00a0 But every day, I was getting stronger.\u00a0 Every day, I was getting\u2014my personality was returning. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFinally, it moved to, \u201cHey, we\u2019re going to let you know what we\u2019ve found.\u201d\u00a0 Correct me if I\u2019m wrong here\u2014the pitch was, \u201cWhy don\u2019t\u2019 you get some family members and some friends?\u00a0 Let\u2019s meet up at my office and we\u2019ll go through\u2014\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Now, Lauren already knew the diagnosis.\u00a0 They told Lauren before they told me.\u00a0 Then, bless Lauren\u2019s heart.\u00a0 Lauren decided to not tell anyone else and just kind of carry that on herself\u2014outside of Brian Miller, who is chairman of our elders, who also knew, because she felt like it would have been just a disrespectful thing for <em>everyone<\/em> in the world to know but me.\u00a0 So, until I knew, she just wasn\u2019t going\u2014she didn\u2019t tell my parents.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t tell her parents\u2014just what a beast of a woman to be able to carry that by herself for that period of time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dr. Barnett had Brian Miller, the chairman of our elders and me meet him in the base\u2014in a conference room in the basement of the hospital.\u00a0 He told me anaplastic oligodendroglioma, which means it\u2019s malignant\u2014it\u2019s grade three.\u00a0 So, it\u2019s not the absolute worst form\u2014glioblastoma would be the most aggressive form of brain tumors\u2014but still life-threatening.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember walking out of that room.\u00a0 We have friends and family there, and seeing couples together and thinking\u2014it just\u2014it stung to see even just my parents sitting together, thinking that here they are decades into marriage, decades into life with grandbabies, together.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cThat is not guaranteed for me;\u201d and I just found that out\u2014that very well, I could be half-a-couple in the next two to three years.\u00a0 So, that, for me, was the hardest part of the whole process\u2014harder than finding out that he had a brain tumor, harder than the seizure, harder than chemo or radiation\u2014but just that point, right there, was the toughest.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Matt:<\/strong>\u00a0 When we walked into Dr. Barnett\u2019s office, I remember he opened up the envelope.\u00a0 I think they took seven swatches.\u00a0 He basically starts walking through the swatches.\u00a0 This was grade one; this is grade one.\u00a0 This was grade two; this was grade two.\u00a0 This was\u2014and then, you get to three.\u00a0 Now, we\u2019re in anaplastic\u2014now, we\u2019re in malignant, non-encapsulated.\u00a0 \u201cThis will kill you.\u201d\u00a0 The question now is, \u201cWhen?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt three, was bad news\u2014it wasn\u2019t good news.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t what we were hoping for.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t\u2014and I don\u2019t know if it was post-surgery stuff or if it was\u2014but I shed some tears and then, geared up.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how else to explain it.\u00a0 I just felt like I shed some tears; and then, we were like, \u201cOkay, let\u2019s see what the Lord is going to do.\u201d\u00a0 I was just having a strange sense of confidence that this was going to be alright\u2014maybe that was naivety.\u00a0 I know the seven steps\u2014maybe this is denial.\u00a0 Maybe this is\u2014you know?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUltimately, from there, we went out to a conference room, where some people on staff\u2014some very good friends of mine were.\u00a0 We were able to sit down and give them the news.\u00a0 At this point, still no one has said to me, \u201cTwo to three years.\u201d\u00a0 No one\u2019s said that to me.\u00a0 They\u2019ve just said this is bad news.\u00a0 This is going to be a fight and that there is going to be radiation\/chemo in my future.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>For whatever reason, the Lord kind of zoomed me in on, \u201cWe\u2019ve got a fight on our hands.\u00a0 So, let\u2019s fight.\u201d\u00a0 I remember, back in those days, I just really had Nehemiah\u2019s prayer, \u201cNow, Lord, strengthen our hands,\u201d in my heart and head.\u00a0 That had been my prayer, \u201cStrengthen my hands.\u00a0 Let me do well.\u00a0 Let me glorify You well in this.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of that night.\u00a0 Then, we headed home.\u00a0 We were going to start radiation, almost immediately after that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lauren:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was partly why they told me before him\u2014was so we could get started getting all that lined up\u2014 the neuro-oncologist said.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve been listening to Matt and Lauren Chandler from the Village Church in Dallas, Texas, as they\u2019ve been reflecting on a tough road that God put them on, almost three years ago.\u00a0 It\u2019s a road where they\u2019ve learned to walk by faith in a way that you can\u2019t learn it any other way than to go through a valley like that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the issue.\u00a0 Are you going to believe the Scriptures in a set of circumstances like they were facing?\u00a0 I want to reread the passage I read at the beginning of the broadcast because, again, there is a listener who needs to hear this again.\u00a0 That listener needs to embrace this passage.\u00a0 The key word, Bob, is the word you used, \u201cby faith\u201d.\u00a0 It\u2019s by faith.\u00a0 \u201cCount it all joy, brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.\u00a0 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome time ago, I had lunch with a businessman.\u00a0 He told me a story.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI was meeting with a Christian leader.\u00a0 I told the Christian leader that my life was really pretty easy\u2014that I really hadn\u2019t ever really endured any major suffering in my life.\u201d\u00a0 He said the Christian leader looked me in the eye and said, \u201cYou will.\u00a0 You will.\u201d\u00a0 He said it wasn\u2019t a matter of a few months before he was facing a number of trials in his life that he needed to step up and face by faith.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe issue is not <em>if<\/em> you\u2019re going to encounter various trials that test your faith, that prove your faith.\u00a0 The issue is you <em>will <\/em>face those trials.\u00a0 You will run into circumstances that remind you\u2014you\u2019re not God, and He is.\u00a0 The issue is, \u201cWill you respond in faith when those circumstances occur?\u00a0 Will you trust God that He knows what He\u2019s doing and that He is a God who loves you and who can be trusted in any and every circumstance?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We still have more to hear from Matt and Lauren this week.\u00a0 I had the opportunity to have this conversation with them, and to get the update on how they are doing, when I was down visiting Matt and making plans for the upcoming Stepping Up Super Saturday that will take place on Saturday, February 2<sup>nd<\/sup>.\u00a0 That\u2019s the day before the Super Bowl.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are going to be hundreds of churches, all around the country, that are going to be joining with us in this Super Saturday event\u2014where men are going to be going through a video event that we have put together that features, not only Matt Chandler, but Tony Dungy, and Bill Bennett, and Dennis Rainey, and Crawford Loritts, and Voddie Baucham, James MacDonald and other guys\u2014all calling men to step up and be men.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMatt\u2019s a part of that
