and I thought, \u201cWell, I can see why Dennis wants to have her on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 She has a master\u2019s from Dallas Theological Seminary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There you go.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s where you went.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re on the board of Dallas Seminary right now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right; right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She and her husband have adopted children from Rwanda.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right, too.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I thought, \u201cThere you go.\u00a0 Dennis will want that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Cha-ching.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Then, here at the bottom of the bio, it says she graduated from Mr. Rainey\u2019s sixth-grade Sunday school class.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWell, now\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, you have it.\u00a0 She is one of the rare survivors.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I had 550 sixth graders go through my class in 11 years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She lived to tell the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She admitted that she attended!\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a great question for her in just a moment about that, but she\u2019s also written a book.\u00a0 It\u2019s called <em>Anything<\/em>\u2014one word\u2014<em>Anything: The Prayer That Unlocked My God and My Soul<\/em>.\u00a0 One thing you didn\u2019t mention\u2014she and Zac are in Austin, Texas, where they give leadership in a local church there.\u00a0 She has three other kids besides the one they adopted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Jennie Allen joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Jennie, welcome to the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 It\u2019s so good to be here.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, wait.\u00a0 I\u2019m curious.\u00a0 Do you remember little 11-year-old Jennie Allen?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Of course.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you really?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Of course, I don\u2019t remember because she was an early\u2014she was one of the early attendees.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I taught it for 11 years.\u00a0 So, she was in year two, I think.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, she got\u2014she kind of got the material early on.\u00a0 I don\u2019t recall whether Jennie caused trouble in the class and if I ever made her sit between two boys\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I may\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014or\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you remember ever\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I may have sat between two boys, but it wasn\u2019t because I was in trouble.\u00a0 I just thought there were a couple of boys that were awfully cute.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 Here is your question from the sixth-grade class.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was the illustration, or the object lesson, or the teaching that grabbed you as an 11- and 12-year-old?\u00a0 Now, there is a reason why I\u2019m asking you this question.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Basically, he\u2019s saying, \u201cDo you remember <em>anything<\/em> about the class?\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I\u2019m giving you a <em>broad <\/em>opportunity here, Jennie.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, good.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, the reason I\u2019m asking is not because of me teaching the class.\u00a0 I want to illustrate this because I want parents to realize that an 11- or 12-year-old is capable of hearing much, much more than you give them credit for; alright?\u00a0 I\u2019ve stalled long enough.\u00a0 I\u2019ve given you a chance to kind of recoup maybe some of the lessons that I taught.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We are all waiting to see: Do you remember anything from the class?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do; absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What do you remember?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 That no adult had talked to me about sex, at that point.\u00a0 Sorry, Mom and Dad, you might have given me a book; but at that point, it was the first time that I had even\u2014and then, it was happening in the church!\u00a0 So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was all new?\u00a0 This was new information for you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was new information for me.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m sure Dennis might have gotten in some trouble behind the scenes about that, but it so was brave.\u00a0 It was so helpful to me because, like I said, I was already liking boys.\u00a0 I remember good and well a boy in that class that I liked at the time.\u00a0 The topics that you covered\u2014church had never been that way for me\u2014so, I was just taking everything in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s interesting\u2014I was reflecting on it, coming today, and thinking of the ministry that you all have had all of these years.\u00a0 I, just now\u2014I have a son headed into seventh grade.\u00a0 I look back, even with more appreciation because I did\u2014can I say that\u2014I did stay pure until I was married.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Praise the Lord for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014if I want to announce that on the radio\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Give me five, right there.\u00a0 Way to go!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014but I did!\u00a0 I think it was the bravery of people that spoke into my life about this topic and didn\u2019t hold back.\u00a0 There is no doubt\u2014I remember sitting in that class.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you remember any specific subject\u2014anything Dennis said\u2014any illustration he used?\u00a0 That\u2019s really what he\u2019s looking for.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This was over a hundred years ago, Bob.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I understand.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know.\u00a0 I mean, \u201cCome on!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve already made it back around with my kids.\u00a0 You know, I don\u2019t know if it was that class and if it was you, but I\u2014the fire.\u00a0 I mean, that one stuck with me\u2014about where the fire belongs.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Smokey\u2014yes, Smokey the Bear.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Smokey the Bear.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 We\u2019ve all heard about Smokey the Bear.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, so that one stuck with me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cOnly you can prevent forest fires.\u201d\u00a0 No, we did.\u00a0 We had little buttons later on.\u00a0 Probably, didn\u2019t have them that second year; but had little buttons with the little bear, there, who was pointing his finger, \u201cOnly you can prevent forest fires.\u201d\u00a0 I was trying to equip these young people to say the best way to stop a forest fire is to never start one.\u00a0 So, \u201cBuild your boundaries high and a long ways away from all the fire.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I know Dennis just gave you a copy of the <em>Passport2Purity<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> resource that you can do with your son or daughters.\u00a0 Now, you get a chance to relive Mr. Rainey\u2019s sixth-grade Sunday school\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014class all over again\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I will.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014this time as an adult.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Well, your book\u2014I tell you, really interesting.\u00a0 I love the theme of this book because it\u2019s around something I believe strongly in, as well.\u00a0 It\u2019s called surrender.\u00a0 You really had a moment of surrender with Zac or, at least, a time when you guys verbalized it in prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you take us to that spot and tell that story?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I can tell that story.\u00a0 We are the kids that grew up in the church.\u00a0 We are the kids that had a lot of things going for us.\u00a0 In a lot of ways, we were doing the right things.\u00a0 We were checking our boxes with God.\u00a0 My husband was in ministry.\u00a0 He\u2019s a pastor\u2014still is.\u00a0 By everybody\u2019s standards\u2014they would look over at Jennie and Zac Allen and would say, \u201cYou guys love God, and you are serving Him in amazing ways,\u201d \u2014but if I were really honest\u2014and I didn\u2019t know this prior\u2014but I loved a lot of things more than I loved God.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat all kind of came to a head for me one night when I was reading a blog of a girl named Katie Davis.\u00a0 I\u2019d heard about her over dinner.\u00a0 I get home, and Zac\u2019s headed to bed.\u00a0 I crawl into the bathroom with my computer and sit on the floor because everybody\u2019s asleep.\u00a0 I start reading the words of this girl.\u00a0 This girl is living in Uganda, at 22, and had adopted 13 little girls off the street.\u00a0 Her words about Jesus and the implications of God just shattered me on that bathroom floor.\u00a0 I think what it was\u2014was I realized and saw in myself, that night, all of the things that I was loving more than God.\u00a0 It really disturbed me.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 For instance?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 One thing that became really clear to me immediately, as I was reading her words, was she abandoned pleasing her parents.\u00a0 She said, \u201cOkay, my parents obviously did not want their young, little girl moving overseas to Uganda,\u201d when she had the grades and the money to do anything she wanted in life.\u00a0 Yet, she said, \u201cBut Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 Everything was just this, \u201cBut Jesus\u201d in her words.\u00a0 It was, \u201cI\u2019m going to give up this life for forever.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realized and saw my own soul pretty quickly.\u00a0 I had not made decisions that way.\u00a0 I had made decisions based on the opinions of people, and I had truly loved everybody\u2019s approval of me.\u00a0 Honestly, that came in the package of a good, little Christian girl.\u00a0 I kind of was doing everything right.\u00a0 I had everybody\u2019s approval, and I was afraid of losing it.\u00a0 I was afraid of doing anything to step out of that box. It was binding me.\u00a0 It was defining my life.\u00a0 All of my decisions\u2014if I got to something, like adoption, and I didn\u2019t know if I would have the approval of my parents, or family, or my community, I would just turn the other way.\u00a0 There wouldn\u2019t be a point of dying to that.\u00a0 I would just want more than anything to keep everybody around me happy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what happened\u2014back to the question\u2014the prayer.\u00a0 I mean, all of this was leading up to this.\u00a0 Reading this girl that was just 110 percent surrendered\u2014and I don\u2019t know that I had seen that very many times.\u00a0 I\u2019m not talking about this surrender has to look like going over to Africa, by the way.\u00a0 I still live in a great, little house in the suburbs of Austin.\u00a0 We are not in a mud hut in Africa; but this heart of, \u201cNothing matters more than pleasing my Savior.\u201d\u00a0 That was so brilliant and stunning to see!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was like God\u2019s glory\u2014just pouring out of this little computer screen\u2014of, \u201cThis is life!\u201d because what happened that night wasn\u2019t Katie.\u00a0 I love her.\u00a0 I\u2019ve gotten to meet her since.\u00a0 I\u2019m a huge fan of her ministry, but it wasn\u2019t her.\u00a0 She would tell you, too, \u201cIt\u2019s not me.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s that she was just obeying God in the story that He has for her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because of that, God\u2019s glory was just pouring out of her.\u00a0 My story has turned out to be different, but I wanted to live that way.\u00a0 I wanted to live my story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to just jump back in because the first thing you said was, \u201cI read this blog from this girl.\u00a0 She was committed to following Jesus, even if it meant displeasing her parents.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, we\u2019re on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Do we need a qualifier around that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s do that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Yes, I believe that even today my deepest desire is to honor my parents; but there had been moments where getting their approval had become a god to me\u2014more important and more valuable than pleasing God, my Savior.\u00a0 I do believe that we cannot do things in the name of Jesus and just walk away from everyone\u2019s opinions.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think that; but I think, usually, especially those of us who have grown up in the church, we tend to do the opposite.\u00a0 We will disqualify movements of God because people are afraid of where it might lead us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just have to say, from the parent-perspective, it\u2019s possible for a mom and a dad to usurp the position\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that belongs to God and say\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You bet.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cYou should do what we want you to do.\u00a0 We know best, even though you\u2019re 20, or 25, or 30, or 50.\u00a0 Follow what we say,\u201d \u2014rather than teach you how to read the Scriptures, and pray, and hear from God yourself.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s such a beautiful dance.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that how every relationship is?\u00a0 It still is with my parents.\u00a0 I can jump ahead in this story and say some of the things that probably scared them to death for us\u2014we are actually living and doing now.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had these beautiful conversations about adoption.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the things that you all have already shared that we have done, and they have been so gracious.\u00a0 I think it is respecting and honoring but also knowing yourself and knowing the things that you are tempted to idolize more than God.\u00a0 For me, it was their opinion and other peoples\u2019, too.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the other thing I\u2019ve found curious.\u00a0 This epiphany that you had\u2014reading the blog and going, \u201cI\u2019m not living this way,\u201d \u2014this was after you got your degree from Dallas Theological Seminary?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 Yes, I had been to seminary.\u00a0 I was chock-full of God.\u00a0 I mean, even verbally passionate about God.\u00a0 If you had sat down and talked to me, there is no doubt you would have walked away and said, \u201cThat girl loves God.\u201d\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t being a fake, but what I didn\u2019t understand was God doesn\u2019t compete.\u00a0 My heart, while it was completely being controlled by others\u2019 opinions of me\u2014He was, in some ways, standing back and waiting for me to demolish that idol.\u00a0 I had to see to it.\u00a0 That was part of the journey and the grace of God because I have no doubt in my mind, prior to that point, I would have been in heaven.\u00a0 I would have faced God.\u00a0 That day, when I faced Him, we would have done business.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would be there, and I would experience His grace and mercy; but I didn\u2019t want to miss all that He had for me because the bottom line is that\u2014if He is real\u2014if the God of the universe is real, and created me, and put me on this earth, and spun this earth\u2014I want to be in line with Him!\u00a0 It isn\u2019t out of reprimand that God brought me to that point\u2014although there was confession and ugly tears.\u00a0 I believe that God wanted to bring me to this place to see my sin and to see that sin is the love of anything more than God.\u00a0 I saw that, that night; and it broke me.\u00a0\u00a0 I wanted to be about things that were bigger than my little self and the invisible thoughts of a few people.\u00a0 It seemed ludicrous after that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You and Zac actually experienced this moment together.\u00a0 I want to read what you wrote in your book.\u00a0 You say, \u201cZac and I climbed into bed on a completely average night two years ago.\u00a0 We were pretty tired.\u00a0 Zac took my hand and spoke the simple words we\u2019d been processing for the past few months but had not been yet ready to say.\u201d\u00a0 Those words were?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWe will do anything.\u201d\u00a0 I think, for us, those little simple words held in them 1,000 little deaths because it certainly wasn\u2019t just people\u2019s approval I loved.\u00a0 I also loved comfort.\u00a0 I loved planning my life.\u00a0 I loved control.\u00a0 I wanted to plan my life and live it.\u00a0 Now, we were acknowledging a God that we had known for a long time, and we had known Him to be trustworthy; but, honestly, we were scared of Him\u2014and probably, rightfully so.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe knew, good and well, when we were handing up to Him little pieces of our lives that we loved and had deeply attached ourselves to that He may mess with them.\u00a0 Sure enough, one by one, He has taken our little tokens of our lives and has begun to piece them into this story that is so much better than one I was trying to write.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I was trying hard to write it, and maintain it, and make it work.\u00a0 I realize that that effort to control my life and keep everybody happy\u2014it was making me sick.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>There was no freedom.\u00a0 I can\u2019t say that I was living that verse that says, \u201cIt is for freedom that Christ set you free.\u201d\u00a0 I did not feel free!\u00a0 In fact, one of my previous projects is called <em>Stuck<\/em> because that is how I felt.\u00a0 I felt so stuck in these feelings of anxiety, in these feelings of measuring up, in these feelings of actually recognizing, a lot of times, that I couldn\u2019t control my life.\u00a0 <br><br>It\u2019s just amazing that in handing up this simple little prayer to God and saying, \u201cGod, we will do anything,\u201d we were saying, \u201cGod, You have us.\u00a0 We\u2019re in.\u00a0 Everything that we\u2019ve been trying to do with our lives, everything we\u2019ve been trying to control, everything we\u2019ve been trying to do to measure up to everybody and even to You, it\u2019s Yours.\u00a0 Do with us what You will, and we\u2019re done.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to put our hands behind our back, and You have us.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I had asked you before then, \u201cDoes God\u2014is He everything to you?\u201d you would have said, \u201cYes;\u201d right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would have because I was comparing that to everybody around me, and we were in ministry.\u00a0 It would have been outward signs.\u00a0 I realized that, outwardly, everyone thought I loved God; and inwardly, between me and Him that night\u2014and it was just us on that floor\u2014He showed me that I didn\u2019t.\u00a0 It was heartbreaking.\u00a0 It still breaks my heart that so long went by; and yet, I believed it was His mercy and timing to show me that night.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven, just back to the book and sitting here and talking with you guys, I mean, I wouldn\u2019t have done any of this.\u00a0 I wanted to sit on the back row of our church, and I didn\u2019t\u2014because I was so paralyzed by fear.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want everybody\u2019s judgment.\u00a0 I was controlling my life in that way.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI can control better everybody\u2019s opinions if I sit back.\u201d\u00a0 I think that\u2019s true for a lot of people.\u00a0 I think we are\u2014we don\u2019t even realize how much fear we are living in.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know how much it\u2019s got us and defines our life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 When we fear people more than we fear God, we\u2019re enslaved.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re imprisoned to the opinions of others; and I\u2019ve been there, too.\u00a0 I mean, I know what you\u2019re talking about.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking of Bill Bright, who was really the first person to teach me about what you\u2019re talking about here\u2014or attempt to teach me\u2014may I say?\u00a0 It has been a lifelong process for me, but he talked about how he was a bond- slave of Jesus Christ.\u00a0\u00a0 He said, \u201cA slave has no rights.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s always convicted me because you can tell if you are really in a master\/slave relationship with Jesus Christ because you haven\u2019t got any rights.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jennie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I think this is a generation of entitled people.\u00a0 I think you are nailing it, and Bill Bright nailed it.\u00a0 We don\u2019t understand the concept of completely giving up our rights because we are Americans.\u00a0 We are the generation that usually gets what we want when we want it.\u00a0 The idea that we would literally say, \u201cGod, even my anger towards my husband or my anger towards someone in our church because they had misunderstood me\u201d\u2014see I didn\u2019t have a right to be understood.\u00a0 I had to realize that it is, \u201cOh, it feels like death,\u201d and it is death; but in it, is freedom.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You probably don\u2019t remember this.\u00a0 The reason is, most likely, in that second year of my sixth-grade Sunday school class, I probably hadn\u2019t landed on the class verse; but for over a half dozen years, the class verse was Colossians, Chapter 1, verse 18, \u201cAnd He\u201d\u2014speaking of Jesus\u2014\u201cis the head of the body, the church.\u00a0 He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything He might be preeminent.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Seeds Family Worship:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Singing <em>Preeminent<\/em> , taken from Colossians 1:18]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I can\u2019t help but think right now there\u2019s a person listening to us who has been struggling with God, and it\u2019s time.\u00a0 It\u2019s time.\u00a0 It\u2019s time to surrender.\u00a0 It\u2019s time to open the prison door and get free.\u00a0 It\u2019s time to burn the idols, crush the idols\u2014whatever it might be\u2014but today is the day.\u00a0 Do it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, a lot of people, I think, know what they\u2019re supposed to do.\u00a0 They know the prayer they ought to be ready to pray;
