Won a lot of games\u2014beat Arkansas a lot of times.\u00a0 In fact, I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve ever beaten you\u2014have we? \u2014since you\u2019ve been coaching at Georgia?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I can\u2019t remember.\u00a0 I plead the Fifth.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was looking forward to this discussion because you all and our family have something in common.\u00a0 We both have adopted.\u00a0 One of our six is adopted and you all have adopted two children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0The reason I was looking forward to this conversation was because of a little clip we saw on ESPN that you did that was one of the most powerful clips I\u2019ve ever seen.\u00a0 I wept, and I know it is because I have a heart for orphans.\u00a0 We\u2019ve adopted one, and it grows beyond the one we\u2019ve had.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, Coach and Katharyn, you may not know this, but about six years ago FamilyLife launched an orphan care outreach called Hope for Orphans<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.\u00a0 There have been a lot of things happen around that.\u00a0 God has used the leader of that, along with other leaders in the orphan care, foster care, and adoption area, to coalesce what is now more than 100 organizations that are meeting annually, talking about how we can work together to address the needs of over 130 million orphans worldwide.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we are trying to do is call the Church\u2014 not individuals\u2014we are trying to call the Church to get on the playing field and to just take a piece of it\u2014take a piece of the problem.\u00a0 There are 400,000 churches.\u00a0 If each person, listening to this broadcast, would say, \u201cI\u2019d like to be that person in my church to help establish an orphan care ministry,\u201d I think we can address this issue\u2014huge.\u00a0 I think, over the next decade, we can see tens of millions of orphans cared for in the foster care system in America\u2014which has a half million foster care children.\u00a0 Over 150,000 of them are adoptable.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I married Barbara, and we started out our marriage together, and we started having kids\u2014we had had four children\u2014over those years\u2014I do not recall, until I started dating Barbara and married her, ever having the conscious thought of two things:\u00a0 Number one: a big family.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even like kids.\u00a0 [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, gosh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And number two: I don\u2019t remember, as an adult, ever having a conscious thought about adopting.\u00a0 I was basically pretty self-absorbed.\u00a0 To think about expressing a heart for an orphan\u2014someone who didn\u2019t have a family\u2014never crossed my mind.\u00a0 But Barbara, as a little girl, had prayed she would have a chance to someday adopt a child and give a child a family.\u00a0 That started a dialogue in our marriage.\u00a0\u00a0 How did the dialogue start in your marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it was definitely a God-thing.\u00a0 Mark and I both came from big families.\u00a0 Our desire was to have a big family, but we were not allowed to have a big family because we went on fertility drugs for both John and David.\u00a0 After David, we had decided we weren\u2019t going to do that any farther.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMark\u2019s dad, actually, and his wife were in a foster care program and took care of some kids.\u00a0 We were witness to that and saw that through our married life.\u00a0\u00a0 We talked about maybe being possibly foster parents, at some point, when our children were older because we wanted our children to be the older ones in the home, not the younger ones.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark: <\/strong>\u00a0We didn\u2019t want to change that pecking order.\u00a0 That was a big part of it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 My brother and his wife, when they got married, were not able to have children together.\u00a0 They had been married for maybe eight or nine years, and they were looking to adopt.\u00a0 They were going through all the options of whether to do it here or overseas.\u00a0 When it is happening in your family, it kind of gets you thinking about it and things of that nature.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, actually, my sister-in-law, Lisa, went over to Ukraine with a friend from our church.\u00a0 While she was over there, we were having discussions in James 1:27 about God tells us to take care of the orphans and the widows.\u00a0 Actually, we were talking about that, and we were talking about Lisa being over there.\u00a0 That next Sunday was when pastor actually addressed the same thing.\u00a0 Mark and I just kind of looked at each other.\u00a0 We kind of said, \u201cWell, yes, we can do this!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We discussed that the responsibility\u2014I remember discussing that the responsibility of helping the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Billy and Lisa were\u2014they went to the Ukraine.\u00a0 They brought back some pictures.\u00a0 Katharyn\u2019s brother\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Lisa was over there.\u00a0 I was actually communicating with Lisa on the phone, when I could.\u00a0 We were just at a family dinner.\u00a0 We were talking about it; and we were like, \u201cYes, we could adopt two little boys.\u00a0 They would fit in our family.\u201d\u00a0 Football and boys\u2014that\u2019s easy.\u00a0 It\u2019s a good thing.\u00a0 We loved our two boys, John and David.\u00a0 I think I was pushing two and Mark\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here is how I remember it.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I remember that Billy and Lisa saw a boy named Andre at the orphanage.\u00a0 We were looking at pictures of Andre.\u00a0 They thought Andre would fit our family.\u00a0\u00a0 They wanted little bitty babies, and Andre was probably already two or three years old.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We didn\u2019t want somebody who wouldn\u2019t sleep through the night.\u00a0 I like my sleep!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, we were watching pictures of Andre; but another little face kept popping up\u2014a little different-looking face than all the other kids.\u00a0 That ended up being Anya.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs this desire to adopt came, we were like, \u201cOkay, we\u2019ll go get Andre;\u201d and then we saw this picture of Anya.\u00a0 We were like, \u201cWho would adopt this face?\u201d\u00a0 We said, \u201cYou know what\u2014let\u2019s adopt her.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you saw Andre and you\u2019re thinking, \u201cWell, maybe this is what God would have for us,\u201d and your eyes keep looking at this little girl\u2014can you describe for our listeners what her face looked like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Her face, all on the left side was just\u2014looked beat up. The right side looks totally normal.\u00a0 Then, the left side just looks all kind of crunched up a little bit.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There is some fibrous tissue growth in there.\u00a0 Anyway, we thought we\u2019d come to America and have some doctors take a look at it and say, \u201cOh, that\u2019s the problem.\u00a0 We\u2019ll get it straightened away immediately.\u201d\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t quite that way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you jumped from seeing a picture of her and coming to America.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\u00a0 I went too fast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As your eyes started to drift toward\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I want to know what you thought.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014her, what happened to cause you to go, \u201cI wonder if we should adopt her?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think, in our minds, we were thinking, \u201cBoys.\u201d\u00a0 I think that both Mark and I probably have hearts of mercy.\u00a0 So, you just\u2014I said to Lisa on the phone, \u201cSo, why is she there?\u201d\u00a0 A lot of the kids are in the orphanage in Ukraine because their parents can\u2019t afford to feed them and take care of them.\u00a0 Lisa said, \u201cShe\u2019s there because of her face\u2014because her parents left her in the maternity ward because of her face.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I think Mark and my hearts just broke.\u00a0 We were just like, \u201cOkay, we\u2019ll take a little baby girl.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Katharyn, that is a huge decision.\u00a0 To go from you had been thinking, \u201cBoy,\u201d and, now, it is a girl\u2014not only a girl\u2014but a girl with facial deformity.\u00a0 To go, \u201cOkay,\u201d \u2014was it that quick?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 The other thing, too, is that we didn\u2019t know if there was other physical\u2014\u201cWho knows what the rest of the body has?\u201d\u00a0 As it turned out, she\u2019s extremely normal in every way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Speak to that though because I\u2019ve been involved in challenging couples to consider adoption.\u00a0 One of their greatest fears is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat if there is something wrong?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes. \u201cWhat are the genetics?\u201d, \u201cWhat if\u2014?\u201d, and, \u201cWhat about this?\u201d\u00a0 Speak to the fear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, they are still little souls; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn: <\/strong>\u00a0God created them.<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right; so, what the heck?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have a friend who adopted a little boy, and the little boy was not expected to live.\u00a0 I have to say that this was one of the most powerful moments in my life because he said, \u201cYou know\u2014he may only live two or three years; but you know what?\u00a0 He will die with a family around him.\u00a0 He will experience family instead of dying alone in a crib or in an orphanage as being a number.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod didn\u2019t make little kids to die alone.\u00a0 That is really what you are saying here.\u00a0\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter what the handicap is\u2014whether it is a physical handicap, an emotional handicap.\u00a0 We all have them.\u00a0 Some handicaps you can just see; but you guys chose her.\u00a0 You chose her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I think that God put it on our heart to do it.\u00a0 It was an act of obedience for us.\u00a0 We believe, when God puts something like that on our hearts, He is going to equip us with what we need to finish the drill\u2014like we say at Georgia.\u00a0 There was confidence that God was going to provide for us and He was going to help us know how to handle the entire situation\u2014not just the adoption.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll say this, too.\u00a0 Adoption is a little bit like marriage.\u00a0 The thought of adoption is exciting, but it is a life-long commitment.\u00a0 The thought of a wedding is exciting.\u00a0 It\u2019s fun.\u00a0 Everybody is like, \u201cOh, the wedding!\u201d \u2014but then you stay married the rest of your life.\u00a0 When you adopt, don\u2019t get enamored with just the thought of adoption because it is a life-long commitment; but it is a major, major blessing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A lot of people think about adoption as, \u201cWe\u2019d like to fill out our family,\u201d or, \u201cWe\u2019d like to add to our family.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t think there\u2019s anything wrong with that; but you guys have described there is kind of a change between \u201cfilling out our family\u201d and all of a sudden going, \u201cWe can take care of a little girl.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not about \u201cfilling out our family\u201d \u2014it\u2019s about investing in the life of a little girl\u2014pouring your life into her.\u00a0 I want to know about the first time you saw Anya, face-to-face\u2014not just in a picture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh!\u00a0 That was so precious because they walked me up to the room.\u00a0 In front of me\u2014Mark was not there\u2014I was in Ukraine alone, making this decision for our family; but he knew exactly who to bring out there for me because I wasn\u2019t going to say, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 It didn\u2019t matter who they brought out there.\u00a0 I was going to be like, \u201cOkay.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe walk up, and we peer into this little room.\u00a0 They\u2019re sitting at the table\u2014so quiet, and peaceful, and sweet\u2014eating some cereal.\u00a0 Then, they bring them out.\u00a0 Well, the minute the caregivers\u2014I see them talk to Anya and Zach\u2014Zach pops up out of his chair and starts running towards the door.\u00a0 Anya starts crying because Anya is very much aware of what\u2019s happening.\u00a0 Zach is, too; but I believe he is fired up to be getting-out-of-the-orphanage type of scenario\u2014even though he was only three-and-a-half.\u00a0 Anya was two-and-a-half, but she knew that if they started calling me, \u201cMama,\u201d that that meant that, eventually, I was going to end up taking her away from what she knew.\u00a0 So, she was crying.\u00a0 She was scared.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI believe that, in the orphanage, because of her facial deformity, she was given a little extra care and attention because what we came to find out was that when they are 15, they are then put out on the street, with the clothes on their back.\u00a0 They can\u2019t afford to do anything else over there.\u00a0 A lot of times, girls, like her, would end up becoming prostitutes and end up in the river, and things of that nature.\u00a0 So, she was scared.\u00a0 I had to bribe her with cookies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the first time you picked her up\u2014describe that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019s very, very, very light.\u00a0 It actually\u2014I didn\u2019t go\u2014I kind of would kneel down on their level, and kind of just rub their little backs, and things like that.\u00a0 I think it took me probably four or five visits of bringing cookies before I actually picked them up and kind of swung them around.\u00a0 It\u2019s not like they just start clinging to you and it\u2019s like your own children\u2014you know, as babies.\u00a0 There is a little\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 It takes time to bond.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 It takes time to bond.\u00a0 They\u2019re a little standoffish because they don\u2019t know\u2014they kind of shift around classes in the orphanage.\u00a0 So, they don\u2019t even have the same caregiver.\u00a0 Zach and Anya didn\u2019t even know how long they were going to be with us.\u00a0 They knew they were going to be leaving the orphanage, but they didn\u2019t know what that meant.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t know that meant that they were going to be with us for the rest of their life, Lord willing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mark, the first time you picked her up; do you remember?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do remember she was light as a feather.\u00a0 I just played with them.\u00a0 I brought a ball, I think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What a surprise.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Zach was showing off.\u00a0 He would do a seat drop on the concrete and laugh.\u00a0 Anya would just laugh hysterically at him.\u00a0 We just watched them play on the playground.\u00a0 They had a couple of old, rusty things there.\u00a0 They had a wooden slide.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 We chased them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It was fun.\u00a0 We just tried to get them to laugh, and tickle them, and all that kind of stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you have any second thoughts as you were over in the Ukraine?\u00a0 You have both of these kids.\u00a0 Were you thinking, \u201cShould we take one?\u00a0 Should we take both?\u201d \u2014any second thoughts?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had second thoughts immediately after I told them.\u00a0 They came out and I said, \u201cYes these are the children we want.\u201d\u00a0 My translator left to go start the paperwork.\u00a0 There was nobody there who spoke English.\u00a0 They ushered me, by myself, into the room with Zach and Anya.\u00a0 Anya is crying.\u00a0 I\u2019m kneeling down, trying to take care of her.\u00a0 Zach is picking up blocks and starting to toss them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnya starts to laugh.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cOkay, he\u2019s not building; but she\u2019s laughing.\u00a0 So, this is okay.\u201d\u00a0 The blocks started flying a little bit wilder, and a little bit harder, and longer.\u00a0 I said, \u201cOkay, nyet, nyet,\u201d which means, \u201cNo.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019re not doing that anymore,\u201d and kind of covered up the blocks.\u00a0 He runs over and knocks a vase over with water.\u00a0 It goes all over the room.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cOh!\u00a0 Nyet!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to clean that up, and he picks up this water can.\u00a0 He\u2019s dumping it all over the floor. I\u2019m like, \u201cOh!\u00a0 Nyet!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnya is still laughing.\u00a0 I\u2019m, at least, thankful for that; but Zach is like\u2014and then he runs down with his head thrown back, just laughing this kind of cackle\u2014a little scary\u2014to the other end of the room.\u00a0 He picks up a stick, and he starts just wildly whacking at things.\u00a0 I remember\u2014literally, like in a stance\u2014it must have been a football stance I\u2019ve seen them do at practice\u2014like saying, \u201cLord, are we okay?\u00a0\u00a0 Are You and I on the same page here?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cDid I hear?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cYou knew what we needed and what I would do.\u00a0 Are we okay?\u201d\u00a0 After that, I was like, \u201cOh boy, what have I gotten our family into?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long did it actually take you before you were able to leave the Ukraine and come back to America with the children?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Katharyn spent about 30 days.\u00a0 I spent 8 days.\u00a0 I got there just to handle the legal part because I had to be there.\u00a0 It was actually a week before camp started of our 1999 season.\u00a0 Coach Bowden allowed me to go at that time.\u00a0 It was supposed to be done earlier in the summer.\u00a0 It got pushed back, so I went. Katharyn did most of everything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is more I want to ask you about adoption because you hinted at it in terms of it not being a fairy tale.\u00a0 It\u2019s not this happily-ever-after story.\u00a0 There is a cost in marriage\u2014making a commitment to another person\u2014but also in making a commitment to adopt.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to talk more about that; but I just want to turn to the listener for a moment and just ask you, \u201cWhat is your response to this?\u201d\u00a0 Maybe it is as simple as praying for the 130-plus million orphans in the world\u2014that God would rally the body of Christ\u2014the troops here in America and other countries around the world\u2014because we\u2019re working with other countries, too\u2014but would rally the troops to rescue the helpless.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe orphan needs people to speak for them.\u00a0 That is what we are talking about here.\u00a0 That\u2019s why Coach Richt decided to do this\u2014and Katharyn\u2014this interview.\u00a0 We are speaking on behalf of those who have no voice.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 The body of Christ\u2014there are so many different parts and pieces of it.\u00a0 I think there are a lot of people out there who might be willing to adopt but feel like they can\u2019t handle it financially.\u00a0\u00a0 They have the heart for it.\u00a0 They have the spirit for it, but they don\u2019t feel like they have the finances for it.\u00a0 Even back when we did it, we had some friends of ours who had the finances to help us take this trip and help us through this adoption process.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou may not be called to adopt yourself, but you may be called to support it financially.\u00a0 There might be a young couple in your church that has the heart for it, but they need help and the confidence of some financial help.\u00a0 I want to encourage prayer\u2014it is number one.\u00a0 If you can help financially, beautiful; and if you want to go ahead and do it yourself, that is great.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be afraid to let people know your needs because I think we just don\u2019t ask enough.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We don\u2019t.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad you mentioned that, Mark.\u00a0 The fourth way you can help is by considering to start an orphan care\/foster care\/adoption ministry in your local church.\u00a0 This is being done in thousands of churches across America.\u00a0 In my opinion, it is one of the cutting-edge new ministries occurring in America.\u00a0 If you want to go visit where God is at work, go get involved in an orphan care ministry.\u00a0 I promise you will see God there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ll meet God in an orphanage.\u00a0 You really will.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Next weekend, our team from Hope for Orphans<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> is participating in a national pastor\u2019s summit on adoption that is taking place at Southern Seminary\u2014talking about all of the ways that individuals and churches can get involved in caring for the needs of orphans. looking forward to this discussion because you all and our family have something in common.\u00a0 We both have adopted.\u00a0 One of our six is adopted and you all have adopted two children.\u00a0 because of a little clip we saw on ESPN that you did that was one of the most powerful clips I\u2019ve ever seen.\u00a0 I wept, and I know it is because I have a heart for orphans.\u00a0 We\u2019ve orphan care outreach called Hope for Orphans<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.\u00a0 There have been a lot of things happen around that.\u00a0 God has used the leader of that, along with other leaders in the orphan care, foster care, and adoption area, to coalesce what is now more than 100 organizations that are meeting annually, talking about how we can work together to address the needs of over 130 million orphans worldwide.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we are trying to do is call the Church\u2014 not individuals\u2014we are trying to call the Church to get on the playing field and to just take a piece of it\u2014take a piece of the problem.\u00a0 There are 400,000 churches.\u00a0 If each person, listening to this broadcast, would say, \u201cI\u2019d like to be that person in my church to help establish an orphan care ministry,\u201d I think we can address this issue\u2014huge.\u00a0 I think, over the next decade, we can see tens of millions of orphans cared for in the foster care system in America\u2014which has a half million foster care children.\u00a0 Over 150,000 of them are adoptable.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I married Barbara, and we started out our marriage together, and we started having kids\u2014we had had four children\u2014over those years\u2014I do not recall, until I started dating Barbara and married her, ever having the conscious thought of two things:\u00a0 Number one: a big family.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even like kids.\u00a0 [Laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, gosh. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And number two: I don\u2019t remember, as an adult, ever having a conscious thought about adopting.\u00a0 I was basically pretty self-absorbed.\u00a0 To think about expressing a heart for an orphan\u2014someone who didn\u2019t have a family\u2014never crossed my mind.\u00a0 But Barbara, as a little girl, had prayed she would have a chance to someday adopt a child and give a child a family.\u00a0 That started a dialogue in our marriage.\u00a0\u00a0 How did the dialogue start in your marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it was definitely a God-thing.\u00a0 Mark and I both came from big families.\u00a0 Our desire was to have a big family, but we were not allowed to have a big family because we went on fertility drugs for both John and David.\u00a0 After David, we had decided we weren\u2019t going to do that any farther.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMark\u2019s dad, actually, and his wife were in a foster care program and took care of some kids.\u00a0 We were witness to that and saw that through our married life.\u00a0\u00a0 We talked about maybe being possibly foster parents, at some point, when our children were older because we wanted our children to be the older ones in the home, not the younger ones.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark: <\/strong>\u00a0We didn\u2019t want to change that pecking order.\u00a0 That was a big part of it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 My brother and his wife, when they got married, were not able to have children together.\u00a0 They had been married for maybe eight or nine years, and they were looking to adopt.\u00a0 They were going through all the options of whether to do it here or overseas.\u00a0 When it is happening in your family, it kind of gets you thinking about it and things of that nature.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, actually, my sister-in-law, Lisa, went over to Ukraine with a friend from our church.\u00a0 While she was over there, we were having discussions in James 1:27 about God tells us to take care of the orphans and the widows.\u00a0 Actually, we were talking about that, and we were talking about Lisa being over there.\u00a0 That next Sunday was when pastor actually addressed the same thing.\u00a0 Mark and I just kind of looked at each other.\u00a0 We kind of said, \u201cWell, yes, we can do this!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We discussed that the responsibility\u2014I remember discussing that the responsibility of helping the widows and the orphans was that of the Church.\u00a0 We have a lot of great social programs in our country and our government does a very nice job in a lot of ways; but really, God\u2019s Word says that the Church should do it.\u00a0 What is the Church?\u00a0 Is it the building or is it the body of Christ?\u00a0 It\u2019s us\u2014it\u2019s the body of Christ.\u00a0\u00a0 Well, what are we doing to make a difference in that area?\u00a0 It all kind of came together around that Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you started to dialogue about it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Billy and Lisa were\u2014they went to the Ukraine.\u00a0 They brought back some pictures.\u00a0 Katharyn\u2019s brother\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Lisa was over there.\u00a0 I was actually communicating with Lisa on the phone, when I could.\u00a0 We were just at a family dinner.\u00a0 We were talking about it; and we were like, \u201cYes, we could adopt two little boys.\u00a0 They would fit in our family.\u201d\u00a0 Football and boys\u2014that\u2019s easy.\u00a0 It\u2019s a good thing.\u00a0 We loved our two boys, John and David.\u00a0 I think I was pushing two and Mark\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here is how I remember it.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I remember that Billy and Lisa saw a boy named Andre at the orphanage.\u00a0 We were looking at pictures of Andre.\u00a0 They thought Andre would fit our family.\u00a0\u00a0 They wanted little bitty babies, and Andre was probably already two or three years old.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We didn\u2019t want somebody who wouldn\u2019t sleep through the night.\u00a0 I like my sleep!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, we were watching pictures of Andre; but another little face kept popping up\u2014a little different-looking face than all the other kids.\u00a0 That ended up being Anya.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs this desire to adopt came, we were like, \u201cOkay, we\u2019ll go get Andre;\u201d and then we saw this picture of Anya.\u00a0 We were like, \u201cWho would adopt this face?\u201d\u00a0 We said, \u201cYou know what\u2014let\u2019s adopt her.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you saw Andre and you\u2019re thinking, \u201cWell, maybe this is what God would have for us,\u201d and your eyes keep looking at this little girl\u2014can you describe for our listeners what her face looked like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Her face, all on the left side was just\u2014looked beat up. The right side looks totally normal.\u00a0 Then, the left side just looks all kind of crunched up a little bit.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There is some fibrous tissue growth in there.\u00a0 Anyway, we thought we\u2019d come to America and have some doctors take a look at it and say, \u201cOh, that\u2019s the problem.\u00a0 We\u2019ll get it straightened away immediately.\u201d\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t quite that way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you jumped from seeing a picture of her and coming to America.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\u00a0 I went too fast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As your eyes started to drift toward\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I want to know what you thought.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014her, what happened to cause you to go, \u201cI wonder if we should adopt her?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think, in our minds, we were thinking, \u201cBoys.\u201d\u00a0 I think that both Mark and I probably have hearts of mercy.\u00a0 So, you just\u2014I said to Lisa on the phone, \u201cSo, why is she there?\u201d\u00a0 A lot of the kids are in the orphanage in Ukraine because their parents can\u2019t afford to feed them and take care of them.\u00a0 Lisa said, \u201cShe\u2019s there because of her face\u2014because her parents left her in the maternity ward because of her face.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I think Mark and my hearts just broke.\u00a0 We were just like, \u201cOkay, we\u2019ll take a little baby girl.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Katharyn, that is a huge decision.\u00a0 To go from you had been thinking, \u201cBoy,\u201d and, now, it is a girl\u2014not only a girl\u2014but a girl with facial deformity.\u00a0 To go, \u201cOkay,\u201d \u2014was it that quick?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 The other thing, too, is that we didn\u2019t know if there was other physical\u2014\u201cWho knows what the rest of the body has?\u201d\u00a0 As it turned out, she\u2019s extremely normal in every way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Speak to that though because I\u2019ve been involved in challenging couples to consider adoption.\u00a0 One of their greatest fears is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat if there is something wrong?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes. \u201cWhat are the genetics?\u201d, \u201cWhat if\u2014?\u201d, and, \u201cWhat about this?\u201d\u00a0 Speak to the fear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, they are still little souls; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn: <\/strong>\u00a0God created them.<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right; so, what the heck?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have a friend who adopted a little boy, and the little boy was not expected to live.\u00a0 I have to say that this was one of the most powerful moments in my life because he said, \u201cYou know\u2014he may only live two or three years; but you know what?\u00a0 He will die with a family around him.\u00a0 He will experience family instead of dying alone in a crib or in an orphanage as being a number.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod didn\u2019t make little kids to die alone.\u00a0 That is really what you are saying here.\u00a0\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter what the handicap is\u2014whether it is a physical handicap, an emotional handicap.\u00a0 We all have them.\u00a0 Some handicaps you can just see; but you guys chose her.\u00a0 You chose her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I think that God put it on our heart to do it.\u00a0 It was an act of obedience for us.\u00a0 We believe, when God puts something like that on our hearts, He is going to equip us with what we need to finish the drill\u2014like we say at Georgia.\u00a0 There was confidence that God was going to provide for us and He was going to help us know how to handle the entire situation\u2014not just the adoption.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll say this, too.\u00a0 Adoption is a little bit like marriage.\u00a0 The thought of adoption is exciting, but it is a life-long commitment.\u00a0 The thought of a wedding is exciting.\u00a0 It\u2019s fun.\u00a0 Everybody is like, \u201cOh, the wedding!\u201d \u2014but then you stay married the rest of your life.\u00a0 When you adopt, don\u2019t get enamored with just the thought of adoption because it is a life-long commitment; but it is a major, major blessing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A lot of people think about adoption as, \u201cWe\u2019d like to fill out our family,\u201d or, \u201cWe\u2019d like to add to our family.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t think there\u2019s anything wrong with that; but you guys have described there is kind of a change between \u201cfilling out our family\u201d and all of a sudden going, \u201cWe can take care of a little girl.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not about \u201cfilling out our family\u201d \u2014it\u2019s about investing in the life of a little girl\u2014pouring your life into her.\u00a0 I want to know about the first time you saw Anya, face-to-face\u2014not just in a picture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh!\u00a0 That was so precious because they walked me up to the room.\u00a0 In front of me\u2014Mark was not there\u2014I was in Ukraine alone, making this decision for our family; but he knew exactly who to bring out there for me because I wasn\u2019t going to say, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 It didn\u2019t matter who they brought out there.\u00a0 I was going to be like, \u201cOkay.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe walk up, and we peer into this little room.\u00a0 They\u2019re sitting at the table\u2014so quiet, and peaceful, and sweet\u2014eating some cereal.\u00a0 Then, they bring them out.\u00a0 Well, the minute the caregivers\u2014I see them talk to Anya and Zach\u2014Zach pops up out of his chair and starts running towards the door.\u00a0 Anya starts crying because Anya is very much aware of what\u2019s happening.\u00a0 Zach is, too; but I believe he is fired up to be getting-out-of-the-orphanage type of scenario\u2014even though he was only three-and-a-half.\u00a0 Anya was two-and-a-half, but she knew that if they started calling me, \u201cMama,\u201d that that meant that, eventually, I was going to end up taking her away from what she knew.\u00a0 So, she was crying.\u00a0 She was scared.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI believe that, in the orphanage, because of her facial deformity, she was given a little extra care and attention because what we came to find out was that when they are 15, they are then put out on the street, with the clothes on their back.\u00a0 They can\u2019t afford to do anything else over there.\u00a0 A lot of times, girls, like her, would end up becoming prostitutes and end up in the river, and things of that nature.\u00a0 So, she was scared.\u00a0 I had to bribe her with cookies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the first time you picked her up\u2014describe that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019s very, very, very light.\u00a0 It actually\u2014I didn\u2019t go\u2014I kind of would kneel down on their level, and kind of just rub their little backs, and things like that.\u00a0 I think it took me probably four or five visits of bringing cookies before I actually picked them up and kind of swung them around.\u00a0 It\u2019s not like they just start clinging to you and it\u2019s like your own children\u2014you know, as babies.\u00a0 There is a little\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 It takes time to bond.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 It takes time to bond.\u00a0 They\u2019re a little standoffish because they don\u2019t know\u2014they kind of shift around classes in the orphanage.\u00a0 So, they don\u2019t even have the same caregiver.\u00a0 Zach and Anya didn\u2019t even know how long they were going to be with us.\u00a0 They knew they were going to be leaving the orphanage, but they didn\u2019t know what that meant.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t know that meant that they were going to be with us for the rest of their life, Lord willing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mark, the first time you picked her up; do you remember?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do remember she was light as a feather.\u00a0 I just played with them.\u00a0 I brought a ball, I think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What a surprise.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Zach was showing off.\u00a0 He would do a seat drop on the concrete and laugh.\u00a0 Anya would just laugh hysterically at him.\u00a0 We just watched them play on the playground.\u00a0 They had a couple of old, rusty things there.\u00a0 They had a wooden slide.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 We chased them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It was fun.\u00a0 We just tried to get them to laugh, and tickle them, and all that kind of stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you have any second thoughts as you were over in the Ukraine?\u00a0 You have both of these kids.\u00a0 Were you thinking, \u201cShould we take one?\u00a0 Should we take both?\u201d \u2014any second thoughts?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had second thoughts immediately after I told them.\u00a0 They came out and I said, \u201cYes these are the children we want.\u201d\u00a0 My translator left to go start the paperwork.\u00a0 There was nobody there who spoke English.\u00a0 They ushered me, by myself, into the room with Zach and Anya.\u00a0 Anya is crying.\u00a0 I\u2019m kneeling down, trying to take care of her.\u00a0 Zach is picking up blocks and starting to toss them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnya starts to laugh.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cOkay, he\u2019s not building; but she\u2019s laughing.\u00a0 So, this is okay.\u201d\u00a0 The blocks started flying a little bit wilder, and a little bit harder, and longer.\u00a0 I said, \u201cOkay, nyet, nyet,\u201d which means, \u201cNo.\u201d \u201cWe\u2019re not doing that anymore,\u201d and kind of covered up the blocks.\u00a0 He runs over and knocks a vase over with water.\u00a0 It goes all over the room.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cOh!\u00a0 Nyet!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to clean that up, and he picks up this water can.\u00a0 He\u2019s dumping it all over the floor. I\u2019m like, \u201cOh!\u00a0 Nyet!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnya is still laughing.\u00a0 I\u2019m, at least, thankful for that; but Zach is like\u2014and then he runs down with his head thrown back, just laughing this kind of cackle\u2014a little scary\u2014to the other end of the room.\u00a0 He picks up a stick, and he starts just wildly whacking at things.\u00a0 I remember\u2014literally, like in a stance\u2014it must have been a football stance I\u2019ve seen them do at practice\u2014like saying, \u201cLord, are we okay?\u00a0\u00a0 Are You and I on the same page here?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cDid I hear?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cYou knew what we needed and what I would do.\u00a0 Are we okay?\u201d\u00a0 After that, I was like, \u201cOh boy, what have I gotten our family into?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long did it actually take you before you were able to leave the Ukraine and come back to America with the children?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Katharyn spent about 30 days.\u00a0 I spent 8 days.\u00a0 I got there just to handle the legal part because I had to be there.\u00a0 It was actually a week before camp started of our 1999 season.\u00a0 Coach Bowden allowed me to go at that time.\u00a0 It was supposed to be done earlier in the summer.\u00a0 It got pushed back, so I went. Katharyn did most of everything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is more I want to ask you about adoption because you hinted at it in terms of it not being a fairy tale.\u00a0 It\u2019s not this happily-ever-after story.\u00a0 There is a cost in marriage\u2014making a commitment to another person\u2014but also in making a commitment to adopt.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to talk more about that; but I just want to turn to the listener for a moment and just ask you, \u201cWhat is your response to this?\u201d\u00a0 Maybe it is as simple as praying for the 130-plus million orphans in the world\u2014that God would rally the body of Christ\u2014the troops here in America and other countries around the world\u2014because we\u2019re working with other countries, too\u2014but would rally the troops to rescue the helpless.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe orphan needs people to speak for them.\u00a0 That is what we are talking about here.\u00a0 That\u2019s why Coach Richt decided to do this\u2014and Katharyn\u2014this interview.\u00a0 We are speaking on behalf of those who have no voice.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mark:<\/strong>\u00a0 The body of Christ\u2014there are so many different parts and pieces of it.\u00a0 I think there are a lot of people out there who might be willing to adopt but feel like they can\u2019t handle it financially.\u00a0\u00a0 They have the heart for it.\u00a0 They have the spirit for it, but they don\u2019t feel like they have the finances for it.\u00a0 Even back when we did it, we had some friends of ours who had the finances to help us take this trip and help us through this adoption process.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou may not be called to adopt yourself, but you may be called to support it financially.\u00a0 There might be a young couple in your church that has the heart for it, but they need help and the confidence of some financial help.\u00a0 I want to encourage prayer\u2014it is number one.\u00a0 If you can help financially, beautiful; and if you want to go ahead and do it yourself, that is great.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be afraid to let people know your needs because I think we just don\u2019t ask enough.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We don\u2019t.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad you mentioned that, Mark.\u00a0 The fourth way you can help is by considering to start an orphan care\/foster care\/adoption ministry in your local church.\u00a0 This is being done in thousands of churches across America.\u00a0 In my opinion, it is one of the cutting-edge new ministries occurring in America.\u00a0 If you want to go visit where God is at work, go get involved in an orphan care ministry.\u00a0 I promise you will see God there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Katharyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ll meet God in an orphanage.\u00a0 You really will.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Next weekend, our team from Hope for Orphans<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> is participating in a national pastor\u2019s summit on adoption that is taking place at Southern Seminary\u2014talking about all of the ways that individuals and churches can get involved in caring for the needs of orphans. Adoption is one of the ways we can do that, and that\u2019s what you guys have done.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, this year, Orphan Sunday\u2014it is Sunday, November 4<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0 That weekend, the team is mobilizing hundreds of Christians and churches, all around the country, to host an <em>If You Were Mine<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> adoption seminar in your local community, in your local church.\u00a0 Anybody can host this event.\u00a0 Our team is making the video curriculum available to the first 500 people who contact us and say, \u201cOur family will host this,\u201d or, \u201cMy wife and I will host it,\u201d \u201cMy husband and I can host this in our church.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll we need is a date and a location.\u00a0 We\u2019ll send out the video seminar so that you can host the <em>If You Were Mine<\/em> video seminar the weekend of November 3<sup>rd<\/sup> and 4<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Again, November 4<sup>th<\/sup> is Orphan Sunday.
