\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I heard Kay say this\u2014a couple of years ago\u2014she was speaking at Catalyst.\u00a0 It was brilliant.\u00a0 She said, \u201cJust ask the question, \u2018God, are you calling me to adopt?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s all she said, \u201cI just want you to go home and ask the question, \u2018God, are you calling me to adopt?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s brilliant.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>She went back.\u00a0 She was invited back to Catalyst this year.\u00a0 Seven young couples\u2014guys all in their 20s\u2014came up and said, \u201cMeet our adopted kid,\u201d because of that day\u2014seven young couples that adopted because she simply said, \u201cAsk the question.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, September 26<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, I so enjoyed reading the Proverb\u2014Proverbs 27:17\u2014that I want to do it again; alright?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Proverbs 27:17\u2014listen up!\u00a0 \u201cIron sharpens iron as one man sharpens another.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is time for men to have an edge.\u00a0 It\u2019s time for us to be sharp.\u00a0 What you\u2019re going to hear on the broadcast today is going to sharpen you.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to shape you.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to challenge you to step up and be a difference-maker because there are literally hundreds of thousands of orphans in America\u2014in the foster care system\u2014and there are millions of orphans, worldwide.\u00a0 There are a ton of orphans in America who are growing up in fatherless homes who need us, as men, to step up and step into their lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you\u2019ve been calling men to step up for awhile now\u2014but our focus, this week, is on calling men to step up in the area of the fatherless and to have a father\u2019s heart for those who don\u2019t have a dad and don\u2019t have a mom\u2014for the orphan.\u00a0 <br><br>We were a part of an event, back in the spring.\u00a0 The Christian Alliance for Orphans hosted the Orphans Summit.\u00a0 This was the eighth annual Orphans Summit.\u00a0 We were out for that event.\u00a0 There was a panel discussion that was convened with you, Rick Warren, Russell Moore from Southern Seminary, and Jedd Medefind, who is the head of the Christian Alliance for Orphans, talking about, \u201cHow do we get men engaged on this issue?\u201d and strategizing together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think there were a couple hundred men in the room as we thought through, \u201cHow do we get guys to engage around this issue and to step up?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re going to hear Part Two of the panel discussion that took place out at Saddleback Church at the Christian Alliance for Orphans Summit, back in May.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded audio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rick, at Saddleback, you\u2019re calling your members to get involved in a variety of ways\u2014Kingdom agendas.\u00a0 The orphan is going to be a concern for a percentage.\u00a0 Is it right that it ought to be for a percentage as opposed to for the whole?\u00a0 It seems overwhelming for all of us to get involved in every aspect of the peace plan; right?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, yes, yes.\u00a0 There\u2019s no doubt about it.\u00a0 God calls us to different causes.\u00a0 One of the problems that we often do is gift projection, \u201cYou must feel as passionately about something as I do.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s just not true.\u00a0 God gives everybody a different shape.\u00a0 We call it spiritual gifts, heart, ability, personality, experience.\u00a0 God wired you for that, and God gave everybody a different shape so everything in the world gets done.\u00a0 If we all liked to do the same things, there\u2019d be a lot that didn\u2019t get done.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, no, you don\u2019t make people feel badly because they say, \u201cThat\u2019s not my particular calling.\u201d\u00a0 What we\u2019re just saying with this conference is, \u201cWe need to call out more.\u201d\u00a0 There are a number of people there who simply haven\u2019t been called out.\u00a0 When they step out\u2014now, as I said, I don\u2019t believe everybody is called to adopt; but I do believe everybody is called to have children in their lives.\u00a0 I say that without fear.\u00a0 That every\u2014your entire life\u2014whether you are 17 or you\u2019re 77, you\u2019re going to need children in your life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s great.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014because they keep you young, they keep you humble, they keep you unselfish.\u00a0 They have all kinds of things to teach you.\u00a0 They force you to get out of your mold.\u00a0 Nothing is more self-centered than a person who has no children in his life.\u00a0 Nobody is more self-centered than somebody that has no children in their life.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 I may offend you, but it\u2019s the truth.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are other ways to build into the lives of children\u2014if a guy tells you, \u201cLook, I\u2019m not in a place to adopt.\u00a0 I\u2019m on the road 50 weeks a year,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m a single person, and I can\u2019t be on the road,\u201d fine.\u00a0 You can get a \u201cTimothy\u201d; okay?\u00a0 By the way, I always like to give guys a little practical faith.\u00a0 Here\u2019s something I\u2019ve done with \u201cTimothy\u2019s\u201d for 40 years.\u00a0 I call it SHARE\u2014S-H-A-R-E.\u00a0 I started doing this when I was 17 years old.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you do when you\u2019re trying to disciple a young boy\u2014five things\u2014S-H-A-R-E.\u00a0\u00a0 First, <em>study<\/em> the Word together.\u00a0 \u201cH\u201d, <em>help<\/em> him with a practical need.\u00a0 \u201cA\u201d, <em>assign<\/em> him a project that you work on.\u00a0 \u201cR\u201d, <em>review<\/em> your Bible verses; and \u201cE\u201d, <em>encourage<\/em> him with prayer.\u00a0 You pray with him and for him.\u00a0 It\u2019s not rocket science.\u00a0 You just do these five things.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to be a genius to do it.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can find a kid in your church\u2014who needs a father figure.\u00a0 You just take him out to Taco Bell or something.\u00a0 You study the Word together.\u00a0 You help him with a practical need.\u00a0 You assign him a project, which might be a Bible-study project.\u00a0 You review some Bible verses you\u2019re working on that you memorized together, and you encourage him with prayer.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s good.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is good.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Russell, in your church, back in Louisville, they know you wrote the book, <em>Adopted for Life<\/em>, and that you\u2019ve got a couple of adopted kids at your home.\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing there are people, when they see you coming\u2014they try to get busy doing something else.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If a guy comes up to you and says, \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s my thing.\u201d\u00a0 Do you say, \u201cGreat\u201d?\u00a0 What do you say to them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I agree with Rick.\u00a0 God does not call everybody to adopt or to foster.\u00a0 God does call everybody, within the body of Christ, to James 1:27, \u201cCare for the widows and the orphans in their distress;\u201d but that looks different in so many different ways.\u00a0 <br><br>One of the things that I\u2019m trying to say\u2014just as loudly as I say, \u201cGod may be calling you to adopt, or foster, or participate\u201d\u2014is to say, \u201cDon\u2019t adopt.\u201d\u00a0 What we don\u2019t need are people who aren\u2019t understanding and counting the cost of what they\u2019re getting into\u2014who think, \u201cSomehow, this orphan is going to meet some need in my life or in my marriage.\u201d\u00a0 You need to say, \u201cDo not\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cOur marriage is rocky.\u00a0 So, let\u2019s adopt a kid.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you\u2019d be surprised at how many people will actually think that.\u00a0 \u201cWell, we can fix our marriage if we join in this project together.\u201d\u00a0 Well, all you are doing is putting an orphan at risk, now, of being twice-orphaned.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to say, \u201cHow is God calling me?\u201d\u00a0 Sometimes, what that means is to step back and simply say, \u201cGod, I don\u2019t know how You are calling me to minister to the widow and to the orphan, but would you show me?\u00a0 Would you give me a desire?\u00a0 Would you give me a passion in that area?\u201d\u00a0 That looks\u2014that can be a thousand different things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dennis, if a guy is listening and he thinks, \u201cGod\u2019s put a burden for this on my wife\u2019s heart but really hasn\u2019t put a burden on my heart.\u00a0 So, it\u2019s cool.\u00a0 She can do her thing.\u00a0 That\u2019s fine.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to be involved in something else.\u201d\u00a0 Is that okay?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s the first response.\u00a0 I think the first response is\u2014what you just said, \u201cPray and ask God, \u2018What is my part?\u00a0 What do You want me to do?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 By the way, Barbara and I were having this conversation, this afternoon, as we ran an errand between the sessions.\u00a0 She said, \u201cYou know?\u00a0 This is the right thing for you and me to be doing.\u00a0 I really love doing this with you.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the deal, guys.\u00a0 You can grow old for something.\u00a0 You were not designed by God to rust out.\u00a0 You were designed to stretch out to the finish line, and I want to do that with my wife.\u00a0 I want to share the battle with her and be in a foxhole together, hunkered down against a common enemy\u2014not standing up\u2014duking it out with her.\u00a0 The tendency is\u2014if you\u2019ve not got a common enemy\u2014you become self-absorbed about the marriage and how, \u201cShe\u2019s not meeting my needs,\u201d or whatever.\u00a0\u00a0 I think the offense\u2014going on the offense is healthy for a marriage\u2014back to your point of spiritual battle.\u00a0 I think there\u2019s something really, very mystical but profoundly practical\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014about engaging in spiritual battle, as a couple, around a calling like this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 morning.\u00a0 My question is, \u201cWhat do you tell the foster youth, who grew up without a father\u201d\u2014like I did.\u00a0 I grew up\u2014my dad died at the age of 40 from brain cancer.\u00a0 I was in foster care for 11 years in the state of Georgia and the state of Ohio.\u00a0 I look at you men on stage.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cWhere were you while I was growing up?\u201d\u00a0 [Tearfully]\u00a0 The question I ask, \u201cWhere was God?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that question\u2014I\u2019ve been asked it a million times because Saddleback is always out on front.\u00a0 We actually have\u2014when there are disasters\u2014we\u2019re like first- responders.\u00a0 The reason we want to be there is because when people say, \u201cWhere is God in that pain?\u201d\u00a0 He is in the lives of the people who are there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Now, when he says, \u201cGod wasn\u2019t there in my pain,\u201d I am sorry!\u00a0 [Tearfully]\u00a0 I am sorry.\u00a0 I think the only appropriate response to somebody in pain is to first go, \u201cThat\u2019s got to hurt,\u201d \u2014not to give them a sermon, not give them a theodicy\u2014a theory of why there is evil allowed in the world\u2014but just to go, \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d and to <em>empathize<\/em> with people is the most manly thing you can do.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you study the ministry of Jesus, you will find that everywhere He went, He gave a look, a word, and a touch\u2014a look, a word, and a touch\u2014a look, a word, and a touch.\u00a0 He looked people in the eye.\u00a0 He would give them a word of encouragement.\u00a0 He would give them an affirming touch\u2014handshake, pat on the back\u2014I don\u2019t care\u2014whatever\u2014a hug, whatever.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you look people in the eye, you\u2019re giving them the most important thing you can give them, which is your attention.\u00a0 If you\u2019re too important to give people your attention, sorry, you\u2019ve got an ego problem.\u00a0 You always give people your attention.\u00a0 When I give you\u2019re wasting your life.\u00a0 Your time is your life.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>When you give a child your attention, you\u2019re giving them the most important and expensive thing you can give them.\u00a0 Give them a look.\u00a0 You look them in the eye, and then, you give them a word; but you give them a word after you\u2019ve listened.\u00a0 You love more with with his friends is they talked too much.\u00a0 They were great friends for the first three chapters.\u00a0 They just went there and sat with him.\u00a0 Okay? \u2014just sat with him.\u00a0 Sometimes, you go, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t know what to do because I don\u2019t know what to say.\u201d\u00a0 Don\u2019t say anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just show up.\u00a0 Just show up and sit there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Got a question up here.\u00a0 What\u2019s your name?\u00a0 Where are you from?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Belai:<\/strong>\u00a0 My name is Belai.\u00a0 I came from Ethiopia.\u00a0 I was born in a poor family.\u00a0 Like my story is big, but I got my first shoes when I was 11 years old.\u00a0 I had grown up in the orphanage.\u00a0 I ended up in the orphanage, watching many kids adopted.\u00a0 I ended up being an un-adopted kid; but one of the things that changed my life was\u2014at the orphanage, I came to know Christ Jesus.\u00a0 He became my Father.\u00a0 I started to listen to His voice.\u00a0 It\u2019s through people\u2014through Americans\u2014I just want to say, \u201cThank you, Americans, because I was sponsored by two American couples.\u00a0 They sent me letters and everything.\u00a0 I want you to keep on doing those things.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>My question is\u2014I have one question.\u00a0 I want my nation to do the same things.\u00a0 I give my life for kids and for\u2014to become a reason for many kids to have a better life and also to spread the Gospel.\u00a0 How can I bring my people to do what you guys are doing?\u00a0 That\u2019s my question.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jedd, do you want to speak to that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think one of the biggest things we need to realize is what the largest decisions we will ever make are.\u00a0 They are not what we often think of as the big decisions.\u00a0 They are the little, small, day-to-day things that we\u2019re doing\u2014because we all want to charge the castle gates.\u00a0 That\u2019s deep inside of us.\u00a0 We want to\u2014I mean, who here wants to fight Sauron?\u00a0 Who would like an opportunity?\u00a0 You get your light\u2014we, all us men, we resonated with that.\u00a0 We want that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what we need to realize\u2014what I\u2019m slowly realizing\u2014is that the biggest decisions I\u2019ll ever make are those small choices each day to love the children in my life.\u00a0 I think of the little girls, if they grow up without the love of a father or a good male, they will end up in the arms of a bad man someday.\u00a0 No question.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t\u2014most of the time, it\u2019s not kicking down the door of a brothel\u2014it\u2019s going and giving a hug to the lonely girl who\u2019s on the edge of the Sunday school class.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>The same with boys\u2014the boys that graduate from the foster system at age 18, without having been adopted, 80 percent of them have been arrested by age 25.\u00a0 You can think about it in terms of, \u201cThey\u2019re going to end up in Mordor someday,\u201d \u2014but it\u2019s not, again, storming a castle to rescue them.\u00a0 It\u2019s spending\u2014taking them fishing, taking them out for breakfast, a cup of coffee.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBelai, I would challenge you in that.\u00a0 I just saw your attitude as you interacted with people.\u00a0 I think you\u2019re making those small decisions to love people.\u00a0 I know you\u2019re working with His Little Feet<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, loving kids every day you\u2019re with them.\u00a0 It\u2019s those things that\u2014when you ask questions\u2014as Rick said, when you give attention\u2014whole-hearted attention to a little child\u2014those are the biggest decisions you\u2019ll ever make.\u00a0 You\u2019re doing it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Belai, I would just like to say\u2014you are going back to Ethiopia.\u00a0 God\u2019s sending you there to take the Gospel.\u00a0 Remember how the whole church in Ethiopia started.\u00a0 It was a conversation with two guys\u2014seemed like an accident on the side of the road doing a Bible study\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 A hitchhiker.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014yes\u2014just went on.\u00a0 Then, what did God do with that?\u00a0 Boom!\u00a0 You\u2019ve got a thriving church coming out of Africa that changed the whole world.\u00a0 We are fitting in this big story of what God\u2019s doing.\u00a0 Don\u2019t grow discouraged.\u00a0 See yourself as part of\u2014as Jedd said, those little decisions are actually <em>huge<\/em> in the Providence of God.\u00a0 Sometimes, we can\u2019t see it for the next 100 years, 200 years, a trillion years; but there is a big, long plan.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As you go back, take heed to what Rick talked about earlier and what Russell just mentioned, \u201cDon\u2019t ignore the local church\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in going back to your country.\u00a0 The power of that unit, generationally, is going to be there.\u00a0 Get a generational vision for the Church\u2014to call it out to address these needs in your country.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well said.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 My name Tom Garwood from Santa Clarita, here in this center.\u00a0 Can you speak to our propensity in churches to programmatize and try to compartmentalize, so that we have our little, easy boxes to check that we\u2019re accomplishing these goals?\u00a0 It just seems to be something that\u2019s our propensity to do.\u00a0 How do we avoid\u2014I mean\u2014because it is orphans, adoption, foster\u2014there\u2019s such a broad range.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs Dr. Moore, you\u2019ve mentioned, we\u2019re called to James 1:27.\u00a0 We\u2019re called to obey it, but it isn\u2019t a cookie cutter where we get a box to check.\u00a0 What are some suggestions for helping us to keep from falling into that compartmentalizing?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what we all want.\u00a0 The reason we want it is because we want to get everybody involved.\u00a0 We want to have everybody to have the little, perforated cards where you just check off the place.\u00a0 The problem is that James 1:27 does not have a perforated card, or it would have been there in James 1:27.\u00a0 It\u2019s by definition, organic.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven if you have a program in your local church, you\u2019re probably going to have to alter it because this thing is so big that you\u2019ve got to see, \u201cWhat is God doing with us?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s not just that the people within your particular church have got a diversity of gifts\u2014your church is a part of a bigger Church that\u2019s got a diversity of gifts.\u00a0 It may be that, in your church, God, particularly, is calling people out in international adoption; or maybe God is calling people to minister to kids who\u2019ve been in disruption situations; or maybe God\u2019s working in foster care, or domestic adoption, or in dealing with unwed mothers who are in crisis pregnancies.\u00a0 You don\u2019t know yet.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou look and you see, \u201cWhere is God working?\u00a0 Where is God moving?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cLet Me equip the saints in all of those ways,\u201d which means you have to have a very nimble program.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to have a program\u2014you have to have a way to plug people in; but it\u2019s got to be nimble, and agile, and adjustable at every step of the place.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me\u2014I would like to speak to this because discipleship is not a program.\u00a0 It\u2019s a relationship and so is mentoring.\u00a0 What\u2019s more important is why you do what you do\u2014not how you do it.\u00a0 There\u2019s going to be a thousand different ways how to do it; but once you figure out the \u201cWhy?\u201d God shows you \u201cHow\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s the most important thing you can do as a pastor in your church?\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you what it is\u2014go home and set a goal for adoptions in your church.\u00a0 More important than a program\u2014go home and set a goal.\u00a0 Why? \u2014because goals are statements of faith.\u00a0 A goal says, \u201cI believe God wants us to do this by such and such a time.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Now, the Bible says, \u201cWithout faith, it is impossible to please God.\u201d\u00a0 The Bible says, \u201cAccording to your faith, it will be done unto you.\u201d\u00a0 The Bible says, \u201cWithout faith, it is impossible to please God.\u201d\u00a0 The Bible says, \u201cWhatever is not of faith is sin\u201d\u2014all of these different things.\u00a0 \u201cThe just shall live by faith.\u201d\u00a0 You will be amazed at what happens in your church if you will just set and publicize a goal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe set a goal five years ago, \u201cOne thousand families to adopt.\u201d\u00a0 I had no idea how we were going to do that.\u00a0 I have never set a goal, but I knew I had to do it first.\u00a0 No.\u00a0 It\u2019s like getting married.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t know how to get married.\u00a0 You just get married.\u00a0 Then, you learn how.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t know how to raise a kid.\u00a0 You just have a kid.\u00a0 Then, you figure out how.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou don\u2019t figure out the how in an adoption program; you just set a goal.\u00a0 We\u2019re going\u2014\u201cOur church is going to have ten families adopt.\u201d\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 Well, if that\u2019s\u2014you\u2019ve never had anybody adopt at your church, that\u2019s a 1,000-percent goal.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 That\u2019s a 1,000-percent goal.\u00a0 You set that goal, you put it out, and you start praying for it.\u00a0 Then, you let the Holy Spirit go\u2014 \u201cI think God is calling me to be number two.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cGod\u2019s calling you to be number three.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf the 500 families that have already adopted in our church, since we set that goal, none of them are doing it alike.\u00a0 They\u2019re all done\u2014it\u2019s like every family that\u2019s different.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, again, we\u2019ve been listening to four warriors, with their swords out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to say, Bob, you know the passage in 1 Corinthians 15:33 that says, \u201cBad company corrupts good morals\u201d?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Good company sharpens the iron.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It does.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It sharpens the iron.\u00a0 Old Rick families.\u00a0 Some of you are in big churches.\u00a0 You ought to have 100 families adopt in the next five years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, our men to have an edge.\u00a0 It\u2019s time for us to be sharp.\u00a0 What you\u2019re going to hear on the broadcast today is going to sharpen you.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to shape you.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to challenge you to step up and be a difference-maker because there are literally hundreds of thousands of orphans in America\u2014in the foster care system\u2014and there are millions of orphans, worldwide.\u00a0 There are a ton of orphans in America who are growing up in fatherless homes who need us, as men, to step up and step into their lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you\u2019ve been calling men to step up for awhile now\u2014but our focus, this week, is on calling men to step up in the area of the fatherless and to have a father\u2019s heart for those who don\u2019t have a dad and don\u2019t have a mom\u2014for the orphan.\u00a0 <br><br>We were a part of an event, back in the spring.\u00a0 The Christian Alliance for Orphans hosted the Orphans Summit.\u00a0 This was the eighth annual Orphans Summit.\u00a0 We were out for that event.\u00a0 There was a panel discussion that was convened with you, Rick Warren, Russell Moore from Southern Seminary, and Jedd Medefind, who is the head of the Christian Alliance for Orphans, talking about, \u201cHow do we get men engaged on this issue?\u201d and strategizing together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think there were a couple hundred men in the room as we thought through, \u201cHow do we get guys to engage around this issue and to step up?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re going to hear Part Two of the panel discussion that took place out at Saddleback Church at the Christian Alliance for Orphans Summit, back in May.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded audio]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rick, at Saddleback, you\u2019re calling your members to get involved in a variety of ways\u2014Kingdom agendas.\u00a0 The orphan is going to be a concern for a percentage.\u00a0 Is it right that it ought to be for a percentage as opposed to for the whole?\u00a0 It seems overwhelming for all of us to get involved in every aspect of the peace plan; right?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, yes, yes.\u00a0 There\u2019s no doubt about it.\u00a0 God calls us to different causes.\u00a0 One of the problems that we often do is gift projection, \u201cYou must feel as passionately about something as I do.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s just not true.\u00a0 God gives everybody a different shape.\u00a0 We call it spiritual gifts, heart, ability, personality, experience.\u00a0 God wired you for that, and God gave everybody a different shape so everything in the world gets done.\u00a0 If we all liked to do the same things, there\u2019d be a lot that didn\u2019t get done.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, no, you don\u2019t make people feel badly because they say, \u201cThat\u2019s not my particular calling.\u201d\u00a0 What we\u2019re just saying with this conference is, \u201cWe need to call out more.\u201d\u00a0 There are a number of people there who simply haven\u2019t been called out.\u00a0 When they step out\u2014now, as I said, I don\u2019t believe everybody is called to adopt; but I do believe everybody is called to have children in their lives.\u00a0 I say that without fear.\u00a0 That every\u2014your entire life\u2014whether you are 17 or you\u2019re 77, you\u2019re going to need children in your life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s great.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014because they keep you young, they keep you humble, they keep you unselfish.\u00a0 They have all kinds of things to teach you.\u00a0 They force you to get out of your mold.\u00a0 Nothing is more self-centered than a person who has no children in his life.\u00a0 Nobody is more self-centered than somebody that has no children in their life.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 I may offend you, but it\u2019s the truth.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are other ways to build into the lives of children\u2014if a guy tells you, \u201cLook, I\u2019m not in a place to adopt.\u00a0 I\u2019m on the road 50 weeks a year,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m a single person, and I can\u2019t be on the road,\u201d fine.\u00a0 You can get a \u201cTimothy\u201d; okay?\u00a0 By the way, I always like to give guys a little practical faith.\u00a0 Here\u2019s something I\u2019ve done with \u201cTimothy\u2019s\u201d for 40 years.\u00a0 I call it SHARE\u2014S-H-A-R-E.\u00a0 I started doing this when I was 17 years old.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you do when you\u2019re trying to disciple a young boy\u2014five things\u2014S-H-A-R-E.\u00a0\u00a0 First, <em>study<\/em> the Word together.\u00a0 \u201cH\u201d, <em>help<\/em> him with a practical need.\u00a0 \u201cA\u201d, <em>assign<\/em> him a project that you work on.\u00a0 \u201cR\u201d, <em>review<\/em> your Bible verses; and \u201cE\u201d, <em>encourage<\/em> him with prayer.\u00a0 You pray with him and for him.\u00a0 It\u2019s not rocket science.\u00a0 You just do these five things.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to be a genius to do it.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can find a kid in your church\u2014who needs a father figure.\u00a0 You just take him out to Taco Bell or something.\u00a0 You study the Word together.\u00a0 You help him with a practical need.\u00a0 You assign him a project, which might be a Bible-study project.\u00a0 You review some Bible verses you\u2019re working on that you memorized together, and you encourage him with prayer.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s good.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is good.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Russell, in your church, back in Louisville, they know you wrote the book, <em>Adopted for Life<\/em>, and that you\u2019ve got a couple of adopted kids at your home.\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing there are people, when they see you coming\u2014they try to get busy doing something else.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If a guy comes up to you and says, \u201cYou know, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s my thing.\u201d\u00a0 Do you say, \u201cGreat\u201d?\u00a0 What do you say to them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I agree with Rick.\u00a0 God does not call everybody to adopt or to foster.\u00a0 God does call everybody, within the body of Christ, to James 1:27, \u201cCare for the widows and the orphans in their distress;\u201d but that looks different in so many different ways.\u00a0 <br><br>One of the things that I\u2019m trying to say\u2014just as loudly as I say, \u201cGod may be calling you to adopt, or foster, or participate\u201d\u2014is to say, \u201cDon\u2019t adopt.\u201d\u00a0 What we don\u2019t need are people who aren\u2019t understanding and counting the cost of what they\u2019re getting into\u2014who think, \u201cSomehow, this orphan is going to meet some need in my life or in my marriage.\u201d\u00a0 You need to say, \u201cDo not\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cOur marriage is rocky.\u00a0 So, let\u2019s adopt a kid.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you\u2019d be surprised at how many people will actually think that.\u00a0 \u201cWell, we can fix our marriage if we join in this project together.\u201d\u00a0 Well, all you are doing is putting an orphan at risk, now, of being twice-orphaned.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to say, \u201cHow is God calling me?\u201d\u00a0 Sometimes, what that means is to step back and simply say, \u201cGod, I don\u2019t know how You are calling me to minister to the widow and to the orphan, but would you show me?\u00a0 Would you give me a desire?\u00a0 Would you give me a passion in that area?\u201d\u00a0 That looks\u2014that can be a thousand different things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dennis, if a guy is listening and he thinks, \u201cGod\u2019s put a burden for this on my wife\u2019s heart but really hasn\u2019t put a burden on my heart.\u00a0 So, it\u2019s cool.\u00a0 She can do her thing.\u00a0 That\u2019s fine.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to be involved in something else.\u201d\u00a0 Is that okay?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s the first response.\u00a0 I think the first response is\u2014what you just said, \u201cPray and ask God, \u2018What is my part?\u00a0 What do You want me to do?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 By the way, Barbara and I were having this conversation, this afternoon, as we ran an errand between the sessions.\u00a0 She said, \u201cYou know?\u00a0 This is the right thing for you and me to be doing.\u00a0 I really love doing this with you.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the deal, guys.\u00a0 You can grow old for something.\u00a0 You were not designed by God to rust out.\u00a0 You were designed to stretch out to the finish line, and I want to do that with my wife.\u00a0 I want to share the battle with her and be in a foxhole together, hunkered down against a common enemy\u2014not standing up\u2014duking it out with her.\u00a0 The tendency is\u2014if you\u2019ve not got a common enemy\u2014you become self-absorbed about the marriage and how, \u201cShe\u2019s not meeting my needs,\u201d or whatever.\u00a0\u00a0 I think the offense\u2014going on the offense is healthy for a marriage\u2014back to your point of spiritual battle.\u00a0 I think there\u2019s something really, very mystical but profoundly practical\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014about engaging in spiritual battle, as a couple, around a calling like this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 morning.\u00a0 My question is, \u201cWhat do you tell the foster youth, who grew up without a father\u201d\u2014like I did.\u00a0 I grew up\u2014my dad died at the age of 40 from brain cancer.\u00a0 I was in foster care for 11 years in the state of Georgia and the state of Ohio.\u00a0 I look at you men on stage.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cWhere were you while I was growing up?\u201d\u00a0 [Tearfully]\u00a0 The question I ask, \u201cWhere was God?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that question\u2014I\u2019ve been asked it a million times because Saddleback is always out on front.\u00a0 We actually have\u2014when there are disasters\u2014we\u2019re like first- responders.\u00a0 The reason we want to be there is because when people say, \u201cWhere is God in that pain?\u201d\u00a0 He is in the lives of the people who are there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Now, when he says, \u201cGod wasn\u2019t there in my pain,\u201d I am sorry!\u00a0 [Tearfully]\u00a0 I am sorry.\u00a0 I think the only appropriate response to somebody in pain is to first go, \u201cThat\u2019s got to hurt,\u201d \u2014not to give them a sermon, not give them a theodicy\u2014a theory of why there is evil allowed in the world\u2014but just to go, \u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d and to <em>empathize<\/em> with people is the most manly thing you can do.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you study the ministry of Jesus, you will find that everywhere He went, He gave a look, a word, and a touch\u2014a look, a word, and a touch\u2014a look, a word, and a touch.\u00a0 He looked people in the eye.\u00a0 He would give them a word of encouragement.\u00a0 He would give them an affirming touch\u2014handshake, pat on the back\u2014I don\u2019t care\u2014whatever\u2014a hug, whatever.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you look people in the eye, you\u2019re giving them the most important thing you can give them, which is your attention.\u00a0 If you\u2019re too important to give people your attention, sorry, you\u2019ve got an ego problem.\u00a0 You always give people your attention.\u00a0 When I give you my attention, I\u2019m giving you my life.\u00a0 It\u2019s far more important than my money.\u00a0 I can always get more money, but I can\u2019t get more time.\u00a0 If you waste your time, you\u2019re wasting your life.\u00a0 Your time is your life.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>When you give a child your attention, you\u2019re giving them the most important and ended up being an un-adopted kid; but one of the things that changed my life was\u2014at the orphanage, I came to know Christ Jesus.\u00a0 He became my Father.\u00a0 I started to listen to His voice.\u00a0 It\u2019s through people\u2014through Americans\u2014I just want to say, \u201cThank you, Americans, because I was sponsored by two American couples.\u00a0 They sent me letters and everything.\u00a0 I want you to keep on doing those things.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>My question is\u2014I have one question.\u00a0 I want my nation to do the same things.\u00a0 I give my life for kids and for\u2014to become a reason for many kids to have a better life and also to spread the Gospel.\u00a0 How can I bring my people to do what you guys are doing?\u00a0 That\u2019s my question.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jedd, do you want to speak to that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think one of the biggest things we need to realize is what the largest decisions we will ever make are.\u00a0 They are not what we often think of as the big decisions.\u00a0 They are the little, small, day-to-day things that we\u2019re doing\u2014because we all want to charge the castle gates.\u00a0 That\u2019s deep inside of us.\u00a0 We want to\u2014I mean, who here wants to fight Sauron?\u00a0 Who would like an opportunity?\u00a0 You get your light\u2014we, all us men, we resonated with that.\u00a0 We want that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what we need to realize\u2014what I\u2019m slowly realizing\u2014is that the biggest decisions I\u2019ll ever make are those small choices each day to love the children in my life.\u00a0 I think of the little girls, if they grow up without the love of a father or a good male, they will end up in the arms of a bad man someday.\u00a0 No question.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t\u2014most of the time, it\u2019s not kicking down the door of a brothel\u2014it\u2019s going and giving a hug to the lonely girl who\u2019s on the edge of the Sunday school class.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>The same with boys\u2014the boys that graduate from the foster system at age 18, without having been adopted, 80 percent of them have been arrested by age 25.\u00a0 You can think about it in terms of, \u201cThey\u2019re going to end up in Mordor someday,\u201d \u2014but it\u2019s not, again, storming a castle to rescue them.\u00a0 It\u2019s spending\u2014taking them fishing, taking them out for breakfast, a cup of coffee.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBelai, I would challenge you in that.\u00a0 I just saw your attitude as you interacted with people.\u00a0 I think you\u2019re making those small decisions to love people.\u00a0 I know you\u2019re working with His Little Feet<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, loving kids every day you\u2019re with them.\u00a0 It\u2019s those things that\u2014when you ask questions\u2014as Rick said, when you give attention\u2014whole-hearted attention to a little child\u2014those are the biggest decisions you\u2019ll ever make.\u00a0 You\u2019re doing it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Belai, I would just like to say\u2014you are going back to Ethiopia.\u00a0 God\u2019s sending you there to take the Gospel.\u00a0 Remember how the whole church in Ethiopia started.\u00a0 It was a conversation with two guys\u2014seemed like an accident on the side of the road doing a Bible study\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 A hitchhiker.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014yes\u2014just went on.\u00a0 Then, what did God do with that?\u00a0 Boom!\u00a0 You\u2019ve got a thriving church coming out of Africa that changed the whole world.\u00a0 We are fitting in this big story of what God\u2019s doing.\u00a0 Don\u2019t grow discouraged.\u00a0 See yourself as part of\u2014as Jedd said, those little decisions are actually <em>huge<\/em> in the Providence of God.\u00a0 Sometimes, we can\u2019t see it for the next 100 years, 200 years, a trillion years; but there is a big, long plan.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As you go back, take heed to what Rick talked about earlier and what Russell just mentioned, \u201cDon\u2019t ignore the local church\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in going back to your country.\u00a0 The power of that unit, generationally, is going to be there.\u00a0 Get a generational vision for the Church\u2014to call it out to address these needs in your country.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well said.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 My name Tom Garwood from Santa Clarita, here in this center.\u00a0 Can you speak to our propensity in churches to programmatize and try to compartmentalize, so that we have our little, easy boxes to check that we\u2019re accomplishing these goals?\u00a0 It just seems to be something that\u2019s our propensity to do.\u00a0 How do we avoid\u2014I mean\u2014because it is orphans, adoption, foster\u2014there\u2019s such a broad range.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs Dr. Moore, you\u2019ve mentioned, we\u2019re called to James 1:27.\u00a0 We\u2019re called to obey it, but it isn\u2019t a cookie cutter where we get a box to check.\u00a0 What are some suggestions for helping us to keep from falling into that compartmentalizing?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what we all want.\u00a0 The reason we want it is because we want to get everybody involved.\u00a0 We want to have everybody to have the little, perforated cards where you just check off the place.\u00a0 The problem is that James 1:27 does not have a perforated card, or it would have been there in James 1:27.\u00a0 It\u2019s by definition, organic.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven if you have a program in your local church, you\u2019re probably going to have to alter it because this thing is so big that you\u2019ve got to see, \u201cWhat is God doing with us?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s not just that the people within your particular church have got a diversity of gifts\u2014your church is a part of a bigger Church that\u2019s got a diversity of gifts.\u00a0 It may be that, in your church, God, particularly, is calling people out in international adoption; or maybe God is calling people to minister to kids who\u2019ve been in disruption situations; or maybe God\u2019s working in foster care, or domestic adoption, or in dealing with unwed mothers who are in crisis pregnancies.\u00a0 You don\u2019t know yet.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou look and you see, \u201cWhere is God working?\u00a0 Where is God moving?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cLet Me equip the saints in all of those ways,\u201d which means you have to have a very nimble program.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to have a program\u2014you have to have a way to plug people in; but it\u2019s got to be nimble, and agile, and adjustable at every step of the place.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me\u2014I would like to speak to this because discipleship is not a program.\u00a0 It\u2019s a relationship and so is mentoring.\u00a0 What\u2019s more important is why you do what you do\u2014not how you do it.\u00a0 There\u2019s going to be a thousand different ways how to do it; but once you figure out the \u201cWhy?\u201d God shows you \u201cHow\u201d\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s the most important thing you can do as a pastor in your church?\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you what it is\u2014go home and set a goal for adoptions in your church.\u00a0 More important than a program\u2014go home and set a goal.\u00a0 Why? \u2014because goals are statements of faith.\u00a0 A goal says, \u201cI believe God wants us to do this by such and such a time.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Now, the Bible says, \u201cWithout faith, it is impossible to please God.\u201d\u00a0 The Bible says, \u201cAccording to your faith, it will be done unto you.\u201d\u00a0 The Bible says, \u201cWithout faith, it is impossible to please God.\u201d\u00a0 The Bible says, \u201cWhatever is not of faith is sin\u201d\u2014all of these different things.\u00a0 \u201cThe just shall live by faith.\u201d\u00a0 You will be amazed at what happens in your church if you will just set and publicize a goal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe set a goal five years ago, \u201cOne thousand families to adopt.\u201d\u00a0 I had no idea how we were going to do that.\u00a0 I have never set a goal, but I knew I had to do it first.\u00a0 No.\u00a0 It\u2019s like getting married.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t know how to get married.\u00a0 You just get married.\u00a0 Then, you learn how.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t know how to raise a kid.\u00a0 You just have a kid.\u00a0 Then, you figure out how.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou don\u2019t figure out the how in an adoption program; you just set a goal.\u00a0 We\u2019re going\u2014\u201cOur church is going to have ten families adopt.\u201d\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 Well, if that\u2019s\u2014you\u2019ve never had anybody adopt at your church, that\u2019s a 1,000-percent goal.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 That\u2019s a 1,000-percent goal.\u00a0 You set that goal, you put it out, and you start praying for it.\u00a0 Then, you let the Holy Spirit go\u2014 \u201cI think God is calling me to be number two.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cGod\u2019s calling you to be number three.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf the 500 families that have already adopted in our church, since we set that goal, none of them are doing it alike.\u00a0 They\u2019re all done\u2014it\u2019s like every family that\u2019s different.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, again, we\u2019ve been listening to four warriors, with their swords out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to say, Bob, you know the passage in 1 Corinthians 15:33 that says, \u201cBad company corrupts good morals\u201d?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Good company sharpens the iron.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It does.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It sharpens the iron.\u00a0 Old Rick was preaching it and so was I.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing, folks\u2014he\u2019s right.\u00a0 Start an orphan care, foster care, adoption ministry in your church and set a goal\u2014five families, ten families.\u00a0 Some of you are in big churches.\u00a0 You ought to have 100 families adopt in the next five years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, our team has been working on a way to help folks get in engaged in exactly what you\u2019re talking about.\u00a0 Orphan Sunday is Sunday, November 4<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 That weekend, the team is hoping that there will be hundreds of churches who will be hosting an <em>If You Were Mine<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em><em> a<\/em>doption seminar.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is something that we\u2019ve put together on video.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy for you to host in your church or in your community.\u00a0 Anyone can do it\u2014anyone who\u2019s got a heart for adoption or for
