Most of the time, in a marriage, if somebody starts talking about adoption, who do you think it is\u2014the husband or the wife?\u00a0 Dr. Russell Moore says, \u201cThere is more we can be doing to encourage men to take the lead in this important area of their marriage and family, as well.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 We know that people are scared of the risks of being involved with orphans.\u00a0 What we want to do is have testimonies that try to take that risk out or to minimize that risk.\u00a0 It\u2019s really a joyful when\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure you were.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014when the four of you\u2014this was you, Russell Moore, Jedd Medefind, and Rick Warren.\u00a0 All of you drew your sabers, and the sparks started to fly.\u00a0 Really, it was friendly sword play; but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Saddleback became a blacksmith\u2019s\u2014 [Laughter]\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 What do you call a blacksmith office?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A shop.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A shop.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A blacksmith shop.\u00a0 This was back in the spring\u2014we were at Saddleback for the National Orphans Summit.\u00a0 It was the eighth annual Orphans Summit.\u00a0 By the way, folks who have a heart for the orphan, if you\u2019ve never been to one of these orphan summits\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014you ought to go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019ll be one coming up this spring.\u00a0 We\u2019ll give you more information about it, but you really should come out and be a part of the National Orphans Summit event that is hosted by the Christian Alliance for Orphans.\u00a0 They put it on every year.\u00a0 It is a powerful event.\u00a0 You and I have had the opportunity to be there for the last couple of years.\u00a0 You\u2019ve been at every one of these since they started eight years ago; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right; because it started, right here, at FamilyLife.\u00a0 Also, at the same time, a ministry called Hope for Orphans\u2014which is a part\u2014that FamilyLife started.\u00a0 We\u2019re giving voice to those who have no voice.\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 At this year\u2019s Orphans Summit, we put together a panel of guys, whom I\u2019ve mentioned.\u00a0 We asked them to address how men, as men, ought to engage around this issue.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re going to hear us talking about here today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think you know all four of our panelists here; right?\u00a0 We\u2019ve got Rick Warren.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got Jedd Medefind.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got Russell Moore and Dennis Rainey.\u00a0\u00a0 I want to start\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to say, up front, Russell\u2019s the smartest of all of us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just wanted everybody to know that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, if you have a theological question, Russell will\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re about to prove that\u2019s not true.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d like each of you to take two minutes and tell us how you got from no heart for the orphan and adoption to a personal heart for that.\u00a0 I\u2019ll start with you.\u00a0 Put you on the spot first; alright?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I married a woman who dreamed of being a mother of an orphan, when she was in her teenage years.\u00a0 On the other hand, on my end of the scale, I do not remember having a conscious thought, as a teenager, about an orphan, about an orphanage, about adoption, about foster care.\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember ever contemplating the needs of that segment of society until I married her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really, honestly, didn\u2019t even like kids all that much.\u00a0 Bit by bit, I began to believe what the psalmist said that, \u201cThe fruit of the womb is a reward.\u00a0 Blessed is he whose quiver is full of them.\u201d\u00a0 From really not thinking a lot about any child, let alone an orphan, to having six children\u2014God really has brought me a long way, but He did it through my wife\u2019s heart\u2014 and not by her nagging\u2014but by us dialoguing and praying together.\u00a0 I think, honestly, God performed heart surgery on me.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2014one of your six is adopted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the six\u2014do not know which one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Beyond that initial adoption, then, your heart for the orphan grew kind of out of that.\u00a0 Is that right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right, and not through a traditional means did God bring our hearts to be enlarged for the orphan.\u00a0 He did it through, really, some errors that our daughter made\u2014that she made in her own life.\u00a0 We walked through some very difficult days with her, but God has done a great work in our hearts\u2014but really through the drama with our daughter.\u00a0 Some of what you see, here, at the Summit occurred really out of God doing a work in our hearts for both birth mothers, the orphan, and adoption.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How about for you, Russell?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it came out of a cage fight that I was involved in with God, and I lost.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to do that later, right?\u00a0 That\u2019s why we have this right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right, with bear grills.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 No, I had a life plan that I expected\u2014get married, have children.\u00a0 Things would happen according to the script that I had set for myself, and it didn\u2019t happen that way.\u00a0 We went through a time of infertility and miscarriage; and I was at a very dangerous place, spiritually, because I found myself really bitter toward God\u2014just grappling and struggling with why God wasn\u2019t doing things the way I had instructed Him to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the middle of all of that, my wife came in and said, \u201cYou know, I think maybe what God is calling us to do is adopt.\u201d\u00a0 My response\u2014I said these words\u2014and they now sound so small and hellish to me.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI\u2019m all about adoption.\u00a0 I want to adopt, but I\u2019d rather have our own children first.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 What my wife did was to realize, \u201cIf we\u2019re going to do this, God\u2019s going to lead him to lead us in this.\u201d\u00a0 So, she didn\u2019t nag.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t berate.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t put little pictures of cute orphans on my breakfast table\u2014that kind of thing.\u00a0 She just stepped back and she prayed for God to change my heart, and He did.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat He did was to break my heart and to show me that the answer to my prayers for children\u2014He had an answer for it that was better than what my life script would have been.\u00a0 I would have been a miserable father if I had had children come along the way that I expected them to come along.\u00a0 I would have seen them just as extensions of myself\u2014expected things to be there.\u00a0 Instead, God broke my heart and showed me children as gifts.\u00a0\u00a0 So, out of that experience of our children, He changed my heart in a broader way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the makeup of your family today is?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have five boys, ages 10 and under.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How many biological?\u00a0 How many\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 We adopted the first two.\u00a0 Then, the others came along the more typical way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, including a newborn baby three months ago?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 A newborn baby, three months old.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jedd, how about you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; well, I feel like, for a lot of folks, especially, if you grew up in the church, the idea is there.\u00a0 This goes for a lot of different issues\u2014but that movement from the head to the heart.\u00a0 It often takes pain for that.\u00a0 I hear elements of that in both of these, and that was the case for me.\u00a0 <br><br>My wife and I had actually decided to adopt after two biological kids.\u00a0 Obviously, we were already, in a sense, headed in that direction.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t all obedience.\u00a0 It was almost kind of logic, just thinking, \u201cHey, we could either have one biologically, or there\u2019s a child growing up without a family.\u00a0 We could give them one.\u201d\u00a0 That made sense.\u00a0 I was really happy with that, but\u2014it\u2019s a longer story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we went through the adoption process, we were matched with a precious little girl from Ethiopia.\u00a0 She had been abandoned and brought in.\u00a0 She was about six months old, and we were mapped with her.\u00a0 We named her after my wife\u2014named her Rachel\u2014Ionia Rachel\u2014after my wife, and made plans to go and be with her.\u00a0 Just shortly before we were going to travel, they called us and said, \u201cJedd, please go home from work.\u00a0 We need to tell your wife and you something together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI headed home, right in the middle of the day, and called the adoption agency back.\u00a0 They said, \u201cLittle Ionia died.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t even have time to tell you she was sick because it took her life so quickly.\u00a0 Her body was so frail.\u201d\u00a0 That was\u2014it was so remarkable just to realize how much you can grieve over a child you\u2019ve never even met face-to-face yet.\u00a0 A lot like a miscarriage\u2014we\u2019ve also had a miscarriage.\u00a0 Similar experience of a late-term miscarriage\u2014just grieving over that precious little one you had not ever held.\u00a0\u00a0 But I think that was one of those moments that took a lot of things from here and moved it down to my heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rick, the heart for the orphan\u2014where did it come from?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; I shared earlier in the session\u2014those of you guys who were in that\u2014about my crisis ten years ago where God kind of beat me up and said, \u201cYou are totally missing this issue.\u201d\u00a0 God got my attention.\u00a0 You can\u2019t travel the world as much as I have and not care about orphans because, if you go to all the places I\u2019ve been, it\u2019s the primary issue!\u00a0 Whoever gets to these kids first is going to win their hearts and minds.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, Kay and I have not adopted\u2014simply, the fact\u2014we would absolutely love to\u2014but our lifestyle.\u00a0 I\u2019m on the road all the time, and she\u2019s on the road all the time.\u00a0 However, I\u2019m in the lives of literally, maybe, 50 kids in this church.\u00a0 I genuinely love children.\u00a0 I\u2019m in their lives all the time; and a lot of kids whose dad is not in the picture, I\u2019m there.\u00a0 I\u2019m there for those kids.\u00a0 I love kids.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis weekend\u2014I do this every weekend that I\u2019m not preaching.\u00a0 When I\u2019m not preaching, I walk the Sunday school classes.\u00a0 I want my kids in this church to know me.\u00a0 Papa Rick, or Pastor Rick\u2014there\u2019ll be 3,000 kids on this campus this weekend.\u00a0 I will hug maybe a fourth of them; okay?\u00a0 When I hug a kid, I go, \u201cI wonder how long that hug has got to last that kid.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve had people tell me\u2014grownups say, \u201cYou know, Rick, the only physical affection I get is at church.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve thought about going into full-time Christian hugging.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 But the truth is\u2014if I was not a senior pastor, I\u2019d been a children\u2019s pastor because I genuinely learn so much from kids.\u00a0 I love being around them.\u00a0 They are the single greatest thing to teach you humility and unselfishness.\u00a0 They keep you real.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rick, I\u2019ve got a hypothesis that I want to try out on you and see if you agree.\u00a0 It seems to me, that within the church, if somebody is going to have a heart for the orphan, it\u2019s more likely to be a woman than a man.\u00a0 You think that\u2019s right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Only because we haven\u2019t gotten the message to men.\u00a0 I think if men understood this simple fact:\u00a0 Right, now, in America, 25 percent of all white kids grow up without the presence of the dad in their home\u201425 percent.\u00a0 Fifty percent of all Hispanic kids grow up in America without the presence of the dad in their home.\u00a0 Seventy-five percent of all African American kids grow up in America without the presence of the dad in the home.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is a disaster waiting to happen\u2014the identity crisis of kids because they don\u2019t have a male figure.\u00a0 I will say this, too.\u00a0 Studies have shown that the number one predictor for whether a kid makes it in life is the presence of a caring adult in that child\u2019s life.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be a parent, but it has to be somebody who cares.\u00a0 So, I think we have to rally men\u2014not just for adoption\u2014but for every kind of thing to involve them in the lives of kids who don\u2019t have a male model in their lives.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jedd, you and I were talking about this earlier.\u00a0 There is, in the heart of a woman, a nurturing instinct that\u2019s\u2014I remember when we had our first baby, it took a while for the bonding to happen with me and the baby.\u00a0 Mary Ann\u2014it was instant.\u00a0 With me, they\u2019ve got to be able to do something before I\u2019m going to bond with them; right?\u00a0 Do you think God\u2019s wired women to have a heart for this more than men?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think He\u2019s wired women to have a special role in the life of children, and He\u2019s wired men to have a special role in the lives of children.\u00a0 That\u2019s going to be different.\u00a0 It\u2019s complimentary.\u00a0 There are times when it overlaps.\u00a0 Men need to be nurturing, too, of course; but there\u2019s something in us that yearns to protect, yearns to do strong things, yearns to do those things that often we don\u2019t associate with caring for orphans\u2014caring for children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we can connect some of these biblical themes of when it says in Isaiah, \u201cDefend the cause of the fatherless...\u201d \u2014that feels manly, and it is.\u00a0 We can associate it\u2014not only with things like bringing out a sword and fighting bad guys\u2014but standing between a child and a dark future because every one of these kids who\u2019s growing up without a mom and a dad\u2014even ones who theoretically have moms and dads in their homes\u2014as you\u2019re saying, Rick, but their dad is not engaged with their life\u2014their future is statistically very dark.\u00a0 It is a defensive, protective, strong act to stand in between that boy and that future\u2014that girl and that future\u2014and say, \u201cI will protect you from that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This afternoon, I was interviewed on a radio show.\u00a0 In the green room, where I was interviewed, there was a Bible opened.\u00a0 It was opened to this passage.\u00a0 I kept looking at it and kept thinking about orphans and how this appeals to something within a man who\u2019s called to be a warrior on behalf of all people\u2014but especially, the helpless.\u00a0 Proverbs 3, verse 1, \u201cMy son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments.\u00a0 For length of days and years of life and peace, they will add to you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink of the boy and the girl who don\u2019t have a daddy to teach and instruct around morality, around a relationship with God, around what danger is, and what it looks like for a young lady or for a young man.\u00a0 To me\u2014I think I agree with you, Rick\u2014I think one of the reasons why more men have not engaged in the plight of the orphans is we haven\u2019t brought men near where the orphan is\u2014sex slavery and trade\u2014horrific things done to children who don\u2019t have a daddy to protect them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen men see that, I think there is something within our chest that calls us, as men, \u201cWe must initiate.\u00a0 We must protect.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve heard the stories here from you.\u00a0 You guys are all here because there\u2019s something within your chest that says, \u201cThis movement needs men;\u201d and I commend you for that.\u00a0 Really do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Russell, a lot of guys\u2014if they go out and play a game; and they\u2019re not any good at it, they\u2019ll find another game\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014because we like to play games we can win.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In this area of life, the issue is so big it seems unwinnable.\u00a0 The amount of effort it takes to win with one child is significant.\u00a0 I can see where a guy goes, \u201cGiven the odds, I\u2019ll watch ESPN.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, but that\u2019s, of course\u2014that\u2019s part of everything in the Christian life.\u00a0 That\u2019s what discipleship is like.\u00a0 That\u2019s what doing spiritual warfare is like.\u00a0 When you look at the depth of how wrong the world has gone, in so many ways, there is a sense in which\u2014if that\u2019s all you see, then, there is a tendency to despair\u2014but if you have an understanding of the Holy Spirit and of the power of God that\u2019s involved in that\u2014that ought to give a sense of understanding the depth of the problem; but also, a sense of hope and of optimism that is present there.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s one of the reasons why a lot of men are distant from this issue is because we tend to, in our churches, often, present this issue in terms of cute, little orphans.\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to say, \u201cLook at these cute, little orphans.\u00a0 They need a home.\u00a0 Welcome them into your home.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\u00a0 That\u2019s part of it.\u00a0 But what we see going on with the orphan crisis is not just a material problem.\u00a0 This is a spiritual warfare issue where something has gone badly wrong in the universe\u2014where you have some beings out there who hate children because children represent newness of life and represent a threat that was made to their power many, many years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, so, I think if men understand and see this\u2014that what we\u2019re really calling them to do is what God called Joseph of Nazareth to do when He says, \u201cTake this woman in.\u00a0 Take this child in, as your son.\u201d\u00a0 He names Jesus.\u00a0 He takes Jesus into Egypt\u2014which doesn\u2019t just mean moving the way we might move from Orange County to Minnesota for awhile.\u00a0 This meant abandoning everything\u2014your whole economic future\u2014in order to care for this woman and this child.\u00a0 What Joseph is doing is demon-wrestling.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what we\u2019re calling men to do.\u00a0 When we\u2019re taking in children and defending children, we are taking on principalities and powers that want to destroy the image of Christ and to say, \u201cNo, these children are worth it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we take a Down syndrome child into our home\u2014that the rest of the world says, \u201cWhy would you bother with this child who\u2019s not going to have a successful future?\u201d\u00a0 When you take that child with AIDS into your arms and you\u2019re not scared of her, when you\u2019re ministering to those people\u2014what you\u2019re doing is not just something nurturing and loving\u2014although that\u2019s true\u2014you\u2019re also declaring war on everything that would say, \u201cThis isn\u2019t worth it.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s worth applause.\u00a0 [Applause]\u00a0 That was worth coming for.\u00a0 You know, he wrote a great book.\u00a0 What\u2019s the name of your book?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Adopted for Life<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Adopted for Life.<\/em>\u00a0 If you haven\u2019t read <em>Adopted for Life<\/em>, that is a phenomenal book by Russell on adoption.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are four left in the bookstore.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rick, if you were going to\u2014let\u2019s say it is Sunday morning at Saddleback\u2014and you\u2019re going to say, \u201cThis evening, we want to rally folks who really want to engage in this orphan issue,\u201d \u2014and you want men to be there.\u00a0 How would you plead the case in a way that would call out the men? \u2014as opposed\u2014because if you just said, \u201cHey, we\u2019re going to do a thing on orphans\u2014anybody who has an interest, come.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think you\u2019d have 90 percent women and 10 percent guys.\u00a0 So, how would you call the men?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Always, the way you frame it\u2014because fathering, and adopting, and parenting\u2014as Dennis just pointed\u2014is more than nurturing.\u00a0 There\u2019s more to it.\u00a0 So, frame it as leadership training.\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Frame it as mentoring.\u00a0 Frame it as leaving a legacy.\u00a0 Frame it as, \u201cThis may be the most significant thing you do with your life because a life changed by\u2014one life changed is going to far outlast your career.\u00a0 Sorry, but it\u2019s going to outlast your career because that human being is going to live on for eternity.\u201d\u00a0 If I knew a more important thing to do with my life than bring people to Jesus, build them up to maturity, train them for their ministry, and send them out on their mission, I\u2019d do it.\u00a0 Now, I don\u2019t just do it on a grand level.\u00a0 I do it on a one-on-one level.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I would simply reframe it.\u00a0 It\u2019s not simply nurturing\u2014we need to reframe the orphan\u2014to as, not simply a victim, but as God\u2019s special child.\u00a0 The Bible says, \u201cI will be a Father to the fatherless.\u201d\u00a0 He does not say that about everybody else.\u00a0 I learned this from a guy, one time in one of the countries in Africa I was in, where he\u2014I said, \u201cHow do you look at your orphans?\u201d\u00a0 He goes, \u201cI look at them as the leaders of the nation in 15 years.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m going, \u201cThis guy just taught me something.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m not looking at all these poor kids.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking at\u2014I\u2019m going to train the leaders of the nation.\u00a0 I loved that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, again, we\u2019ve been listening to Rick Warren, Russell Moore, Jedd Medefind, and Dennis Rainey all talking about the needs of orphans and men getting engaged.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And Bob, in listening to this again, I\u2019m sharpened that\u2019s coming at you and your family, your community\u2014then, you need to do it.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a couple of ways you can do it.\u00a0 One, we\u2019ve mentioned here today\u2014get involved in the orphan movement.\u00a0 Attend the Summit next year in Nashville.\u00a0 We\u2019ll give you more information on that a bit later.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr, as a man, when\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure you were.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014when the four of you\u2014this was you, Russell Moore, Jedd Medefind, and Rick Warren.\u00a0 All of you drew your sabers, and the sparks started to fly.\u00a0 Really, it was friendly sword play; but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Saddleback became a blacksmith\u2019s\u2014 [Laughter]\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 What do you call a blacksmith office?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A shop.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A shop.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A blacksmith shop.\u00a0 This was back in the spring\u2014we were at Saddleback for the National Orphans Summit.\u00a0 It was the eighth annual Orphans Summit.\u00a0 By the way, folks who have a heart for the orphan, if you\u2019ve never been to one of these orphan summits\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014you ought to go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019ll be one coming up this spring.\u00a0 We\u2019ll give you more information about it, but you really should come out and be a part of the National Orphans Summit event that is hosted by the Christian Alliance for Orphans.\u00a0 They put it on every year.\u00a0 It is a powerful event.\u00a0 You and I have had the opportunity to be there for the last couple of years.\u00a0 You\u2019ve been at every one of these since they started eight years ago; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right; because it started, right here, at FamilyLife.\u00a0 Also, at the same time, a ministry called Hope for Orphans\u2014which is a part\u2014that FamilyLife started.\u00a0 We\u2019re giving voice to those who have no voice.\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 At this year\u2019s Orphans Summit, we put together a panel of guys, whom I\u2019ve mentioned.\u00a0 We asked them to address how men, as men, ought to engage around this issue.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re going to hear us talking about here today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Recorded audio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think you know all four of our panelists here; right?\u00a0 We\u2019ve got Rick Warren.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got Jedd Medefind.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got Russell Moore and Dennis Rainey.\u00a0\u00a0 I want to start\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to say, up front, Russell\u2019s the smartest of all of us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just wanted everybody to know that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, if you have a theological question, Russell will\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re about to prove that\u2019s not true.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d like each of you to take two minutes and tell us how you got from no heart for the orphan and adoption to a personal heart for that.\u00a0 I\u2019ll start with you.\u00a0 Put you on the spot first; alright?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I married a woman who dreamed of being a mother of an orphan, when she was in her teenage years.\u00a0 On the other hand, on my end of the scale, I do not remember having a conscious thought, as a teenager, about an orphan, about an orphanage, about adoption, about foster care.\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember ever contemplating the needs of that segment of society until I married her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really, honestly, didn\u2019t even like kids all that much.\u00a0 Bit by bit, I began to believe what the psalmist said that, \u201cThe fruit of the womb is a reward.\u00a0 Blessed is he whose quiver is full of them.\u201d\u00a0 From really not thinking a lot about any child, let alone an orphan, to having six children\u2014God really has brought me a long way, but He did it through my wife\u2019s heart\u2014 and not by her nagging\u2014but by us dialoguing and praying together.\u00a0 I think, honestly, God performed heart surgery on me.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2014one of your six is adopted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the six\u2014do not know which one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Beyond that initial adoption, then, your heart for the orphan grew kind of out of that.\u00a0 Is that right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right, and not through a traditional means did God bring our hearts to be enlarged for the orphan.\u00a0 He did it through, really, some errors that our daughter made\u2014that she made in her own life.\u00a0 We walked through some very difficult days with her, but God has done a great work in our hearts\u2014but really through the drama with our daughter.\u00a0 Some of what you see, here, at the Summit occurred really out of God doing a work in our hearts for both birth mothers, the orphan, and adoption.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How about for you, Russell?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it came out of a cage fight that I was involved in with God, and I lost.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to do that later, right?\u00a0 That\u2019s why we have this right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right, with bear grills.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 No, I had a life plan that I expected\u2014get married, have children.\u00a0 Things would happen according to the script that I had set for myself, and it didn\u2019t happen that way.\u00a0 We went through a time of infertility and miscarriage; and I was at a very dangerous place, spiritually, because I found myself really bitter toward God\u2014just grappling and struggling with why God wasn\u2019t doing things the way I had instructed Him to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the middle of all of that, my wife came in and said, \u201cYou know, I think maybe what God is calling us to do is adopt.\u201d\u00a0 My response\u2014I said these words\u2014and they now sound so small and hellish to me.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI\u2019m all about adoption.\u00a0 I want to adopt, but I\u2019d rather have our own children first.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 What my wife did was to realize, \u201cIf we\u2019re going to do this, God\u2019s going to lead him to lead us in this.\u201d\u00a0 So, she didn\u2019t nag.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t berate.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t put little pictures of cute orphans on my breakfast table\u2014that kind of thing.\u00a0 She just stepped back and she prayed for God to change my heart, and He did.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat He did was to break my heart and to show me that the answer to my prayers for children\u2014He had an answer for it that was better than what my life script would have been.\u00a0 I would have been a miserable father if I had had children come along the way that I expected them to come along.\u00a0 I would have seen them just as extensions of myself\u2014expected things to be there.\u00a0 Instead, God broke my heart and showed me children as gifts.\u00a0\u00a0 So, out of that experience of our children, He changed my heart in a broader way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the makeup of your family today is?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have five boys, ages 10 and under.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How many biological?\u00a0 How many\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 We adopted the first two.\u00a0 Then, the others came along the more typical way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, including a newborn baby three months ago?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 A newborn baby, three months old.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jedd, how about you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; well, I feel like, for a lot of folks, especially, if you grew up in the church, the idea is there.\u00a0 This goes for a lot of different issues\u2014but that movement from the head to the heart.\u00a0 It often takes pain for that.\u00a0 I hear elements of that in both of these, and that was the case for me.\u00a0 <br><br>My wife and I had actually decided to adopt after two biological kids.\u00a0 Obviously, we were already, in a sense, headed in that direction.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t all obedience.\u00a0 It was almost kind of logic, just thinking, \u201cHey, we could either have one biologically, or there\u2019s a child growing up without a family.\u00a0 We could give them one.\u201d\u00a0 That made sense.\u00a0 I was really happy with that, but\u2014it\u2019s a longer story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we went through the adoption process, we were matched with a precious little girl from Ethiopia.\u00a0 She had been abandoned and brought in.\u00a0 She was about six months old, and we were mapped with her.\u00a0 We named her after my wife\u2014named her Rachel\u2014Ionia Rachel\u2014after my wife, and made plans to go and be with her.\u00a0 Just shortly before we were going to travel, they called us and said, \u201cJedd, please go home from work.\u00a0 We need to tell your wife and you something together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI headed home, right in the middle of the day, and called the adoption agency back.\u00a0 They said, \u201cLittle Ionia died.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t even have time to tell you she was sick because it took her life so quickly.\u00a0 Her body was so frail.\u201d\u00a0 That was\u2014it was so remarkable just to realize how much you can grieve over a child you\u2019ve never even met face-to-face yet.\u00a0 A lot like a miscarriage\u2014we\u2019ve also had a miscarriage.\u00a0 Similar experience of a late-term miscarriage\u2014just grieving over that precious little one you had not ever held.\u00a0\u00a0 But I think that was one of those moments that took a lot of things from here and moved it down to my heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rick, the heart for the orphan\u2014where did it come from?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; I shared earlier in the session\u2014those of you guys who were in that\u2014about my crisis ten years ago where God kind of beat me up and said, \u201cYou are totally missing this issue.\u201d\u00a0 God got my attention.\u00a0 You can\u2019t travel the world as much as I have and not care about orphans because, if you go to all the places I\u2019ve been, it\u2019s the primary issue!\u00a0 Whoever gets to these kids first is going to win their hearts and minds.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, Kay and I have not adopted\u2014simply, the fact\u2014we would absolutely love to\u2014but our lifestyle.\u00a0 I\u2019m on the road all the time, and she\u2019s on the road all the time.\u00a0 However, I\u2019m in the lives of literally, maybe, 50 kids in this church.\u00a0 I genuinely love children.\u00a0 I\u2019m in their lives all the time; and a lot of kids whose dad is not in the picture, I\u2019m there.\u00a0 I\u2019m there for those kids.\u00a0 I love kids.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis weekend\u2014I do this every weekend that I\u2019m not preaching.\u00a0 When I\u2019m not preaching, I walk the Sunday school classes.\u00a0 I want my kids in this church to know me.\u00a0 Papa Rick, or Pastor Rick\u2014there\u2019ll be 3,000 kids on this campus this weekend.\u00a0 I will hug maybe a fourth of them; okay?\u00a0 When I hug a kid, I go, \u201cI wonder how long that hug has got to last that kid.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve had people tell me\u2014grownups say, \u201cYou know, Rick, the only physical affection I get is at church.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve thought about going into full-time Christian hugging.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 But the truth is\u2014if I was not a senior pastor, I\u2019d been a children\u2019s pastor because I genuinely learn so much from kids.\u00a0 I love being around them.\u00a0 They are the single greatest thing to teach you humility and unselfishness.\u00a0 They keep you real.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rick, I\u2019ve got a hypothesis that I want to try out on you and see if you agree.\u00a0 It seems to me, that within the church, if somebody is going to have a heart for the orphan, it\u2019s more likely to be a woman than a man.\u00a0 You think that\u2019s right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Only because we haven\u2019t gotten the message to men.\u00a0 I think if men understood this simple fact:\u00a0 Right, now, in America, 25 percent of all white kids grow up without the presence of the dad in their home\u201425 percent.\u00a0 Fifty percent of all Hispanic kids grow up in America without the presence of the dad in their home.\u00a0 Seventy-five percent of all African American kids grow up in America without the presence of the dad in the home.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is a disaster waiting to happen\u2014the identity crisis of kids because they don\u2019t have a male figure.\u00a0 I will say this, too.\u00a0 Studies have shown that the number one predictor for whether a kid makes it in life is the presence of a caring adult in that child\u2019s life.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be a parent, but it has to be somebody who cares.\u00a0 So, I think we have to rally men\u2014not just for adoption\u2014but for every kind of thing to involve them in the lives of kids who don\u2019t have a male model in their lives.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jedd, you and I were talking about this earlier.\u00a0 There is, in the heart of a woman, a nurturing instinct that\u2019s\u2014I remember when we had our first baby, it took a while for the bonding to happen with me and the baby.\u00a0 Mary Ann\u2014it was instant.\u00a0 With me, they\u2019ve got to be able to do something before I\u2019m going to bond with them; right?\u00a0 Do you think God\u2019s wired women to have a heart for this more than men?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jedd:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think He\u2019s wired women to have a special role in the life of children, and He\u2019s wired men to have a special role in the lives of children.\u00a0 That\u2019s going to be different.\u00a0 It\u2019s complimentary.\u00a0 There are times when it overlaps.\u00a0 Men need to be nurturing, too, of course; but there\u2019s something in us that yearns to protect, yearns to do strong things, yearns to do those things that often we don\u2019t associate with caring for orphans\u2014caring for children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we can connect some of these biblical themes of when it says in Isaiah, \u201cDefend the cause of the fatherless...\u201d \u2014that feels manly, and it is.\u00a0 We can associate it\u2014not only with things like bringing out a sword and fighting bad guys\u2014but standing between a child and a dark future because every one of these kids who\u2019s growing up without a mom and a dad\u2014even ones who theoretically have moms and dads in their homes\u2014as you\u2019re saying, Rick, but their dad is not engaged with their life\u2014their future is statistically very dark.\u00a0 It is a defensive, protective, strong act to stand in between that boy and that future\u2014that girl and that future\u2014and say, \u201cI will protect you from that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This afternoon, I was interviewed on a radio show.\u00a0 In the green room, where I was interviewed, there was a Bible opened.\u00a0 It was opened to this passage.\u00a0 I kept looking at it and kept thinking about orphans and how this appeals to something within a man who\u2019s called to be a warrior on behalf of all people\u2014but especially, the helpless.\u00a0 Proverbs 3, verse 1, \u201cMy son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments.\u00a0 For length of days and years of life and peace, they will add to you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThink of the boy and the girl who don\u2019t have a daddy to teach and instruct around morality, around a relationship with God, around what danger is, and what it looks like for a young lady or for a young man.\u00a0 To me\u2014I think I agree with you, Rick\u2014I think one of the reasons why more men have not engaged in the plight of the orphans is we haven\u2019t brought men near where the orphan is\u2014sex slavery and trade\u2014horrific things done to children who don\u2019t have a daddy to protect them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen men see that, I think there is something within our chest that calls us, as men, \u201cWe must initiate.\u00a0 We must protect.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve heard the stories here from you.\u00a0 You guys are all here because there\u2019s something within your chest that says, \u201cThis movement needs men;\u201d and I commend you for that.\u00a0 Really do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Russell, a lot of guys\u2014if they go out and play a game; and they\u2019re not any good at it, they\u2019ll find another game\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014because we like to play games we can win.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In this area of life, the issue is so big it seems unwinnable.\u00a0 The amount of effort it takes to win with one child is significant.\u00a0 I can see where a guy goes, \u201cGiven the odds, I\u2019ll watch ESPN.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, but that\u2019s, of course\u2014that\u2019s part of everything in the Christian life.\u00a0 That\u2019s what discipleship is like.\u00a0 That\u2019s what doing spiritual warfare is like.\u00a0 When you look at the depth of how wrong the world has gone, in so many ways, there is a sense in which\u2014if that\u2019s all you see, then, there is a tendency to despair\u2014but if you have an understanding of the Holy Spirit and of the power of God that\u2019s involved in that\u2014that ought to give a sense of understanding the depth of the problem; but also, a sense of hope and of optimism that is present there.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s one of the reasons why a lot of men are distant from this issue is because we tend to, in our churches, often, present this issue in terms of cute, little orphans.\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to say, \u201cLook at these cute, little orphans.\u00a0 They need a home.\u00a0 Welcome them into your home.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\u00a0 That\u2019s part of it.\u00a0 But what we see going on with the orphan crisis is not just a material problem.\u00a0 This is a spiritual warfare issue where something has gone badly wrong in the universe\u2014where you have some beings out there who hate children because children represent newness of life and represent a threat that was made to their power many, many years ago. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, so, I think if men understand and see this\u2014that what we\u2019re really calling them to do is what God called Joseph of Nazareth to do when He says, \u201cTake this woman in.\u00a0 Take this child in, as your son.\u201d\u00a0 He names Jesus.\u00a0 He takes Jesus into Egypt\u2014which doesn\u2019t just mean moving the way we might move from Orange County to Minnesota for awhile.\u00a0 This meant abandoning everything\u2014your whole economic future\u2014in order to care for this woman and this child.\u00a0 What Joseph is doing is demon-wrestling.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what we\u2019re calling men to do.\u00a0 When we\u2019re taking in children and defending children, we are taking on principalities and powers that want to destroy the image of Christ and to say, \u201cNo, these children are worth it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we take a Down syndrome child into our home\u2014that the rest of the world says, \u201cWhy would you bother with this child who\u2019s not going to have a successful future?\u201d\u00a0 When you take that child with AIDS into your arms and you\u2019re not scared of her, when you\u2019re ministering to those people\u2014what you\u2019re doing is not just something nurturing and loving\u2014although that\u2019s true\u2014you\u2019re also declaring war on everything that would say, \u201cThis isn\u2019t worth it.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s worth applause.\u00a0 [Applause]\u00a0 That was worth coming for.\u00a0 You know, he wrote a great book.\u00a0 What\u2019s the name of your book?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Russell:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Adopted for Life<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Adopted for Life.<\/em>\u00a0 If you haven\u2019t read <em>Adopted for Life<\/em>, that is a phenomenal book by Russell on adoption.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are four left in the bookstore.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rick, if you were going to\u2014let\u2019s say it is Sunday morning at Saddleback\u2014and you\u2019re going to say, \u201cThis evening, we want to rally folks who really want to engage in this orphan issue,\u201d \u2014and you want men to be there.\u00a0 How would you plead the case in a way that would call out the men? \u2014as opposed\u2014because if you just said, \u201cHey, we\u2019re going to do a thing on orphans\u2014anybody who has an interest, come.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think you\u2019d have 90 percent women and 10 percent guys.\u00a0 So, how would you call the men?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Always, the way you frame it\u2014because fathering, and adopting, and parenting\u2014as Dennis just pointed\u2014is more than nurturing.\u00a0 There\u2019s more to it.\u00a0 So, frame it as leadership training.\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Frame it as mentoring.\u00a0 Frame it as leaving a legacy.\u00a0 Frame it as, \u201cThis may be the most significant thing you do with your life because a life changed by\u2014one life changed is going to far outlast your career.\u00a0 Sorry, but it\u2019s going to outlast your career because that human being is going to live on for eternity.\u201d\u00a0 If I knew a more important thing to do with my life than bring people to Jesus, build them up to maturity, train them for their ministry, and send them out on their mission, I\u2019d do it.\u00a0 Now, I don\u2019t just do it on a grand level.\u00a0 I do it on a one-on-one level.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I would simply reframe it.\u00a0 It\u2019s not simply nurturing\u2014we need to reframe the orphan\u2014to as, not simply a victim, but as God\u2019s special child.\u00a0 The Bible says, \u201cI will be a Father to the fatherless.\u201d\u00a0 He does not say that about everybody else.\u00a0 I learned this from a guy, one time in one of the countries in Africa I was in, where he\u2014I said, \u201cHow do you look at your orphans?\u201d\u00a0 He goes, \u201cI look at them as the leaders of the nation in 15 years.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m going, \u201cThis guy just taught me something.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m not looking at all these poor kids.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking at\u2014I\u2019m going to train the leaders of the nation.\u00a0 I loved that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, again, we\u2019ve been listening to Rick Warren, Russell Moore, Jedd Medefind, and Dennis Rainey all talking about the needs of orphans and men getting engaged.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And Bob, in listening to this again, I\u2019m sharpened afresh.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I mean, I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s a razor-edge; but this is the day, folks, as a man\u2014if you haven\u2019t stepped up and engaged in the spiritual battle that\u2019s coming at you and your family, your community\u2014then, you need to do it.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a couple of ways you can do it.\u00a0 One, we\u2019ve mentioned here today\u2014get involved in the orphan movement.\u00a0 Attend the Summit next year in Nashville.\u00a0 We\u2019ll give you more information on that a bit later.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOr, as a man, November 4<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 That weekend, our team at Hope for Orphans is hoping to mobilize hundreds of churches around the country to host workshops for families who want to consider adoption.\u00a0 We have a video workshop that we\u2019ve put together called <em>If You Were Mine<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em>.\u00a0 The first 500 people who get in touch with us and let us
