and it is why I would characterize a good bit of that as boring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have you ever heard a sermon from Leviticus?\u00a0 Now think about it \u2014a grown-up sermon from the book of Leviticus \u2014anything that comes to mind?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I have.\u00a0 What about you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019ve preached one from the book of Leviticus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, that\u2019s what you want to talk about!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I wasn\u2019t talking about that.\u00a0 What I was thinking about is, \u201cIf you\u2019re going to teach kids the whole Bible, you\u2019re going to have to deal with Leviticus, and Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And most parents don\u2019t even go anywhere near there because they don\u2019t know what\u2019s in them.\u00a0 They\u2019re afraid to touch them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ll stay on safe ground like Daniel and his three friends in the fiery furnace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly; weren\u2019t they?\u00a0 Uhh.\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We don\u2019t have cucumbers and tomatoes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Captain Pete:<\/strong> No vegetables.\u00a0 Vegetables are yesterday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have puppets today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have puppets because puppets are the future.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about puppets [Laughter] because there are some people who\u2014they hear about a video series with puppets and they go\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and it takes them back to a bad church basement experience in 1972.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Flannel graphs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to redeem that.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had so many people write me, that are in children\u2019s ministry and say, \u201cThank you for redeeming the puppet,\u201d because they feel like it could be cool again.\u00a0 We\u2019ve described the series as \u201cThe Muppets go to seminary.\u201d\u00a0 You can see the Muppets doing really\u2014they can teach science.\u00a0 They can do really advanced stuff.\u00a0 Because they\u2019re Muppets, you think, \u201cOh, they\u2019ll make it fun.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you a Muppet lover when they were\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was.\u00a0 In fifth grade, we had the assignment to write an essay about your dream job.\u00a0 My dream job was working for Jim Henson on <em>The Muppet Show<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it started back when you were nine years old and you got into film.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 I started with puppets, first, when I was like six.\u00a0 I got a puppet\u2014my grandpa bought me a puppet.\u00a0 I started playing with that and thought, \u201cThat\u2019s fun.\u201d\u00a0 Then, I found out you can make your own animated films, which was a completely wild thought.\u00a0 So, when I was eight or nine, I started making animated films, and animating GI Joes, and Legos, and all sorts of stuff.\u00a0 It\u2019s a mix of puppetry and animation that has been fueling the last thirty years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And your parents became wealthy off of those original films.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not so much.\u00a0 It depends on how you define wealth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Spiritual wealth; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here you are, trying to take kids from Genesis all the way through.\u00a0 How far along are you in the development, right now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m actually\u2014we just finished shooting the Old Testament.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you included taking kids through Ecclesiastes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes and the Song of Solomon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Well, you have to be careful.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 You have to be thoughtful.\u00a0 What we\u2019re looking at\u2014we don\u2019t want kids to be surprised, learning later, that there\u2019s a part of the Bible no one ever told them about\u2014like we\u2019re hiding things because it will be bad.\u00a0 Like Song of Solomon\u2014kids don\u2019t really need to read Song of Solomon.\u00a0 There\u2019s no real benefit for a child to read the Song of Solomon, but they should know it exists.\u00a0 We wanted to explain it in a way that they\u2019d say, \u201cOh, okay.\u00a0 I vaguely know what that\u2019s about,\u201d but not to entice them to actually go read it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you did that with what characters?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 We did that with Clive and Ian, who are our two British archaeologist brothers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clive:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hello, I\u2019m Clive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ian:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m Ian, and we\u2019re going through the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 They fly their biplane around, and they look for interesting things to talk about.\u00a0 Sunday School Lady\u2014our 72-year-old Southern Baptist Sunday school teacher, who kind of holds down the fort\u2014who is based on my grandmother, by the way, in case you were wondering.\u00a0 She starts out saying: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sunday School Lady:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay the next book in the Bible is a little bit\u2014different.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 And everyone gets very curious.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ian:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, what do you mean, Sunday School Lady?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sunday School Lady:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s a book of love songs written between a man and a woman who were engaged to be married.\u00a0 It starts out\u2014the second verse says, \u201cHe kisses me with the kisses of his mouth.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 And Ian says\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ian:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wait.\u00a0 There\u2019s mushy in the Bible?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that\u2019s really all kids need to know about Song of Solomon\u2014is there\u2019s mushy in the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is mushy in the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t want to read that,\u201d but at least you have an inkling of what it is so you\u2019re not surprised.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You kind of skip over\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Basically we want to teach kids, \u201cWhat is this book about? Why is it in the Bible?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s more important\u2014\u201cWhy is it in the Bible?\u201d\u00a0 We answer that question; and then, <br>\u201cDoes it play a role in the story of God\u2019s great rescue plan?\u201d because the whole Bible is about God\u2019s great rescue plan.\u00a0 The first 11 chapters of Genesis set up everything you need to know to understand life, which is, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t supposed to be the way it is today.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve already hinted at the fact that there was a transition for you from <em>VeggieTales<\/em> to <em>What\u2019s in the Bible?<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>It was more than just a professional transition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a bumpy ride for you at the end of <em>VeggieTales<\/em>, wondering what you were going to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us more about what happened in that interim period.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I almost worked myself to death with <em>VeggieTales<\/em>.\u00a0 I ended up in the hospital with pericarditis, at one point; and they thought I was having a heart attack.\u00a0 It was stress.\u00a0 I was working myself to death.\u00a0 What I was trying to do was\u2014I wanted to build the Christian Disney.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to do as much as I could as fast as I could because those were the models I had growing up.\u00a0 Growing up in the church\u2014were these missionaries who had done amazing things\u2014guys like Bill Bright or R.G. Letourneau, if you know who he was\u2014who did amazing things and either changed the world or donated millions of dollars for other people to change the world.\u00a0 I had to do that.\u00a0 This pressure drove me almost to death to try to do it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, at the end, when it seemed to be going so well, God let it all fall apart.\u00a0 I lost the whole thing in bankruptcy due to a lawsuit with a former distributor.\u00a0 I was so confused how God could let that happen, \u201cDidn\u2019t You see how much good I was doing with these vegetables?\u00a0 You really need them; right?\u201d\u00a0 God finally showed me what I had done.\u00a0 He showed me that I had made the work I was doing <em>for Him<\/em> more important than my relationship <em>with Him<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt came out of bad theology that God loves me because of what I can do for Him, not just because He made me.\u00a0 I realized that I had become miserable.\u00a0 It was affecting my health.\u00a0 It was affecting my family.\u00a0 I remember reading the fruit of the Spirit one night, sitting in bed with my wife, reading the fruit of the Spirit:\u00a0 peace, joy, love\u2014all these wonderful things.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have those things.\u00a0 I was like, \u201cWhat am I missing?\u201d\u00a0 I finally turned to my wife and said, \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019m a Christian because, if I\u2019m a Christian and the Spirit is in me, these things should be coming out of me.\u00a0 I\u2019m stressed, I\u2019m anxious, I\u2019m worried; and none of those are on this list.\u201d\u00a0 That led me on this search for, \u201cOkay, what am I missing?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realized what God was teaching me was I was hanging on to my dreams until they became idols\u2014my goals, my ambition\u2014and that God wanted me to let it all go, give it to Him, take my ambition and nail it to the cross.\u00a0 Until I was happy doing nothing for Him, except just resting in my relationship with Him, I shouldn\u2019t be doing anything for Him.\u00a0\u00a0 He got me to that point when <em>VeggieTales<\/em> got dragged away, and it literally left me with nothing to do but read my Bible.\u00a0 At first, I\u2019m thinking, \u201cOkay, give me something else!\u00a0 I need my next big idea, my next big thing,\u201d and God gave me nothing.\u00a0 After three months of just reading the Bible, suddenly I realized, \u201cI don\u2019t feel that need anymore.\u00a0 I don\u2019t feel the need to be impressive, to be ambitious,\u201d because the needs I had were being met by the Scripture I was reading and the life of prayer I was developing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s when I started to turn, and look back, and say, \u201cOkay, God.\u00a0 How can I share this with kids?\u201d\u00a0 I went off, on a tear, to say, \u201cOkay, this is fun.\u00a0 This is exciting.\u00a0 I want to share what I\u2019ve learned.\u00a0 I can now walk in peace.\u00a0 I can still do fun things for God; but they are not idols, and they do not define me.\u00a0 I\u2019m defined by my relationship with Him, and now let\u2019s see what I can do with Him, just walking with Him day to day.\u201d\u00a0 That led directly to this mission to walk kids all the way through the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you look back on <em>VeggieTales<\/em> today.\u00a0 Do you think, \u201cI\u2019m really glad I did that,\u201d or do you think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am glad I did that because of its primary message.\u00a0 The primary message of <em>VeggieTales<\/em>\u2014 which actually came from my mother, the children\u2019s ministry expert\u2014was, \u201cIn every episode, remind kids how much God loves them and how special they are.\u201d\u00a0 See, that message, \u201cGod made you special and loves you very much,\u201d was supposed to be the first line of a conversation.\u00a0 This is where we start.\u00a0 If we can accept this, \u201cThere is a God who made us and loves us,\u201d what\u2019s next?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUnfortunately, <em>VeggieTales<\/em> became so successful that suddenly, rather than continuing that conversation, I was in meetings about <em>VeggieTales<\/em> garden gloves and <em>VeggieTales<\/em> sew-at-home fabrics, and <em>VeggieTales<\/em> toys.\u00a0 Now put that little message, \u201cGod made you special\u201d on this line of underwear\u2014it just got ridiculous.\u00a0\u00a0 I never had time to continue the conversation.\u00a0 I realize, in a very real sense, God took that away so I could get back to what He called me to do, which is teach kids about Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think parents today are underselling their kids in terms of challenging them to the real authentic Christianity, to truly being a Christ-follower.\u00a0 Don\u2019t you agree?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Right; right.\u00a0 When we tell stories like Noah\u2019s ark and never mention God\u2019s judgment or His holiness, we\u2019re misrepresenting Scripture.\u00a0 When we tell the story of Israel and don\u2019t mention the Israelites getting swallowed up by the ground, or fire coming down from heaven and consuming half the camp of the Israelites\u2014not the bad guys, the Israelites!\u2014when we skip God\u2019s holiness, we do a disservice to our kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf they don\u2019t understand God\u2019s holiness, they have no idea why we need redemption\u2014and we don\u2019t even need a Savior.\u00a0 That\u2019s so key\u2014to walk them all the way through the story\u2014a thousand years of Israel messing up to know that, \u201cKids, you can\u2019t do it on your own.\u00a0 Stop trying.\u00a0 You can\u2019t do it.\u00a0 The beginning of accepting Jesus is to actually give up\u2014is to say, \u2018I can\u2019t do this on my own.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUntil you see what happened to Israel when they tried to do it on their own, it\u2019s hard to get to that point, when you\u2019re a kid.\u00a0 If you\u2019re 50 years old and you\u2019re an alcoholic, you\u2019re much more likely to say, \u201cI can\u2019t do this on my own;\u201d but when you\u2019re a kid, the only way is to hear stories about others\u2014to hear stories from the past.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we have the Old Testament, which we tend to skip, except for the cute little stories with animals.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re getting ready to do the New Testament.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s time for the New Testament.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve got to ask you.\u00a0 What is going to be the message of the New Testament?\u00a0 If that\u2019s the message of the Old\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 The key of the New Testament\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where are you heading?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 The Old Testament is a story without an ending.\u00a0 That\u2019s the Old Testament.\u00a0 It is a story that has no ending.\u00a0 The New Testament fulfills every promise of God that we find in the Old Testament.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we spent so much time in the Old Testament, to lay down, \u201cOkay, what did God promise to Abraham?\u00a0 What did He promise to David?\u201d\u00a0 We teach kids what the Davidic covenant is.\u00a0 Ian, the puppet, thinks <em>Davidic<\/em> is the funniest word he\u2019s ever heard; and he keeps making other people\u2019s names into words like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ian:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m Ian-ic and you\u2019re Clyde-ic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that\u2019s the way you make things sticky.\u00a0 That is a funny word\u2014Septuagint.\u00a0 Every time Captain Pete says that, his parrot thinks he\u2019s sneezing.\u00a0 He says, \u201cBless you.\u201d\u00a0 He says, [Captain Pete\u2019s voice] \u201cI did not sneeze.\u00a0 I said \u2018Septuagint.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe can make it fun to actually learn this stuff and then answer really tough questions\u2014the kind of questions that knock our kids\u2019 faith out from under them in high school and college\u2014questions like, \u201cWhat\u2019s with all the weird rules in Leviticus?\u00a0 It says, \u2018Be kind,\u2019 \u2018Share with others,\u2019 \u2018Don\u2019t kill,\u2019 and then it says, \u2018Don\u2019t trim your beard.\u00a0 Don\u2019t wear clothes out of two different kinds of fabrics.\u00a0 Don\u2019t eat bacon.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe obvious question is, \u201cWhy do we have to obey these rules, but not these rules?\u201d \u2014which becomes critical when they get to high school and something comes up, like homosexuality.\u00a0 They say, \u201cYes, sure, the Bible says homosexuality is wrong; but it also says it\u2019s wrong to eat bacon.\u201d\u00a0 If you can\u2019t stand up and say, \u201cHere\u2019s why these rules are not still followed in the New Testament and these rules are,\u201d \u2014if you can\u2019t explain that, you\u2019re helpless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re in trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are in trouble today.\u00a0 Questions like, \u201cWhy was it okay for the Israelites to kill all those Canaanites?\u00a0 Why was that okay?\u201d\u00a0 Have you ever heard that addressed in Sunday school?\u00a0 Of course not, because you\u2019d be crazy to try to get a volunteer Sunday school teacher to walk kids through that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s my question.\u00a0 It seems like it\u2019s one of those questions where there\u2019s an obvious answer.\u00a0 Of course, the answer should be, \u201cYes;\u201d but is there a market for this?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Seriously, you look around at what is going on in church and in families\u2014do parents today want a systematic approach to taking their kids through the whole Bible?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 They should.\u00a0 Many do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I guess you\u2019re trying to find out; aren\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to find out.\u00a0 It\u2019s a mixed bag.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had people just flat out say, \u201cYou know\u2014we like vegetables better.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to stick with <em>VeggieTales<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cDid you even watch it?\u00a0 Did you see how deep we\u2019re going?\u201d\u00a0 We have discovered, for a lot of people, they want to know how to keep their kids off drugs; they want to know how to keep their kids from having sex.\u00a0 If you say, \u201cI\u2019m going to walk your kids through the Bible,\u201d they don\u2019t quite make the connection between those things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They don\u2019t?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They want the moral behavior, but the theological foundation doesn\u2019t seem to be relevant to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, what it is\u2014it\u2019s really a commentary on how they view their own relationship with God and how they connect the Scriptures to their lives, practically, day in and day out\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014because what the series does\u2014if your kids go through this\u2014it\u2019s going to get sticky in their lives, and they\u2019re going to develop a Christian worldview.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to look at life through the eyes of the God who created them\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and the God who became flesh, and dwelt among us, and died on a cross, and rose again on the third day.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to begin to view life through the redemption story and begin to live it out in their own lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I think the best way to prepare kids for the hard questions they\u2019re going to find in life later on is to introduce those questions much earlier on.\u00a0 When we avoid the hard questions and then let our kids go out\u2014off to high school, go off to college\u2014having never faced these hard questions, they\u2019re doomed.\u00a0 They\u2019re absolutely doomed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome people say, \u201cYes; but if I introduce them when they\u2019re young, what if they start doubting?\u201d\u00a0 At some point, they have to start doubting because you\u2019ll never own your faith if you\u2019ve never doubted your faith.\u00a0 It never becomes personal if you\u2019ve never doubted it.\u00a0 Introducing these questions in a safe environment of a Sunday school class or your living room with your parents is a wonderful place to say, \u201cWhy was it okay for the Israelites to kill all those Canaanites?\u00a0 That seems like a terrible thing to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would say to a parent or a grandparent who is listening right now, who is wanting to feel more competent in passing on the real relationship with Jesus Christ, that a DVD series like this is going to give you tons of opportunities to begin to connect with your children around weighty issues of life, around the Bible\u2014talk with them, interact with them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBack to your question, Bob, \u201cIs there a market for this?\u201d\u00a0 I think there is because I think parents go on trips.\u00a0 I think there are all kinds of video machines now, in cars and minivans\u2014that parents are always looking for something better than what the world offers.\u00a0 This series is going to be played, I think, like we used to play <em>The<\/em> <em>Chronicles of Narnia<\/em> on our cassette tape, back when our kids were little. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve had a lot of parents write us and say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m learning alongside my kids.\u00a0 I don\u2019t necessarily want to admit that to my kids, but I\u2019m learning alongside my kids,\u201d to the point where we\u2019ve had a few adult small groups start going through the series, just with grown-ups, because it\u2019s such a good introduction to the faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you toss out a question like, \u201cWhy was it the height of his success, as one of the co-creators of <em>VeggieTales<\/em>, Phil Vischer says he was not in a particularly good place, spiritually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had become miserable.\u00a0 It was affecting my health.\u00a0 It was affecting my family.\u00a0 I remember reading the fruit of the Spirit one night, sitting in bed with my wife, reading the fruit of the Spirit:\u00a0 peace, joy, love \u2014all these wonderful things.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have those things.\u00a0 I was like, \u201cWhat am I missing?\u201d\u00a0 I finally turned to my wife and said, \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019m a Christian.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 God finally showed me what I had done.\u00a0 He showed me that I had made the work I was doing <em>for Him<\/em> more important than my relationship <em>with Him<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Numbers.\u00a0 Do you remember that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve tried to forget it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you actually go through Leviticus in your Sunday school?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m sure somewhere, along the line, someone read from it or taught from it; and it is why I would characterize a good bit of that as boring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have you ever heard a sermon from Leviticus?\u00a0 Now think about it \u2014a grown-up sermon from the book of Leviticus \u2014anything that comes to mind?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I have.\u00a0 What about you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019ve preached one from the book of Leviticus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, that\u2019s what you want to talk about!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I wasn\u2019t talking about that.\u00a0 What I was thinking about is, \u201cIf you\u2019re going to teach kids the whole Bible, you\u2019re going to have to deal with Leviticus, and Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And most parents don\u2019t even go anywhere near there because they don\u2019t know what\u2019s in them.\u00a0 They\u2019re afraid to touch them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ll stay on safe ground like Daniel and his three friends in the fiery furnace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly; and yet, if you\u2019re looking for help, and you\u2019re looking for some tools that will help you, as a parent, pass on the truth about who God is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Turn to the tomato.\u00a0 That\u2019s God in every way imaginable.\u00a0 Some of the tribes of Israel were even killing each other.\u00a0 They were making idols; and some of the Levites, God\u2019s priests in Israel, were helping the other tribes worship the idols instead of God!\u00a0 The cycle of apostasy went down, and down, and and it takes them back to a bad church basement experience in 1972.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Flannel Muppets doing really\u2014they can teach science.\u00a0 They can do really advanced stuff.\u00a0 Because they\u2019re Muppets, you think, \u201cOh, they\u2019ll make it fun.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you a Muppet lover when they were\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was.\u00a0 In fifth grade, we had the assignment to write an essay about your dream job.\u00a0 My dream job was working for Jim Henson on <em>The Muppet Show<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it started back when you were nine years old and you got into film.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 I started with puppets, first, when I was like six.\u00a0 I got a puppet\u2014my grandpa bought me a puppet.\u00a0 I started playing with that and thought, \u201cThat\u2019s fun.\u201d\u00a0 Then, I found out you can make your own animated films, which was a completely wild thought.\u00a0 So, when I was eight or nine, I started making animated films, and animating GI Joes, and Legos, and all sorts of stuff.\u00a0 It\u2019s a mix of puppetry and animation that has been fueling the last thirty years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And your parents became wealthy off of those original films.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not so much.\u00a0 It depends on how you define wealth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right, Dennis. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Spiritual wealth; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here you are, trying to take kids from Genesis all the way through.\u00a0 How far along are you in the development, right now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m actually\u2014we just finished shooting the Old Testament.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you included taking kids through Ecclesiastes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes and the Song of Solomon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Well, you have to be careful.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 You have to be thoughtful.\u00a0 What we\u2019re looking at\u2014we don\u2019t want kids to be surprised, learning later, that there\u2019s a part of the Bible no one ever told them about\u2014like we\u2019re hiding things because it will be bad.\u00a0 Like Song of Solomon\u2014kids don\u2019t really need to read Song of Solomon.\u00a0 There\u2019s no real benefit for a child to read the Song of Solomon, but they should know it exists.\u00a0 We wanted to explain it in a way that they\u2019d say, \u201cOh, okay.\u00a0 I vaguely know what that\u2019s about,\u201d but not to entice them to actually go read it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you did that with what characters?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 We did that with Clive and Ian, who are our two British archaeologist brothers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Clive:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hello, I\u2019m Clive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ian:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m Ian, and we\u2019re going through the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 They fly their biplane around, and they look for interesting things to talk about.\u00a0 Sunday School Lady\u2014our 72-year-old Southern Baptist Sunday school teacher, who kind of holds down the fort\u2014who is based on my grandmother, by the way, in case you were wondering.\u00a0 She starts out saying: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sunday School Lady:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay the next book in the Bible is a little bit\u2014different.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 And everyone gets very curious.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ian:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, what do you mean, Sunday School Lady?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sunday School Lady:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s a book of love songs written between a man and a woman who were engaged to be married.\u00a0 It starts out\u2014the second verse says, \u201cHe kisses me with the kisses of his mouth.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 And Ian says\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ian:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wait.\u00a0 There\u2019s mushy in the Bible?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that\u2019s really all kids need to know about Song of Solomon\u2014is there\u2019s mushy in the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is mushy in the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t want to read that,\u201d but at least you have an inkling of what it is so you\u2019re not surprised.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You kind of skip over\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Basically we want to teach kids, \u201cWhat is this book about? Why is it in the Bible?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s more important\u2014\u201cWhy is it in the Bible?\u201d\u00a0 We answer that question; and then, <br>\u201cDoes it play a role in the story of God\u2019s great rescue plan?\u201d because the whole Bible is about God\u2019s great rescue plan.\u00a0 The first 11 chapters of Genesis set up everything you need to know to understand life, which is, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t supposed to be the way it is today.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve already hinted at the fact that there was a transition for you from <em>VeggieTales<\/em> to <em>What\u2019s in the Bible?<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>It was more than just a professional transition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a bumpy ride for you at the end of <em>VeggieTales<\/em>, wondering what you were going to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us more about what happened in that interim period.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I almost worked myself to death with <em>VeggieTales<\/em>.\u00a0 I ended up in the hospital with pericarditis, at one point; and they thought I was having a heart attack.\u00a0 It was stress.\u00a0 I was working myself to death.\u00a0 What I was trying to do was\u2014I wanted to build the Christian Disney.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to do as much as I could as fast as I could because those were the models I had growing up.\u00a0 Growing up in the church\u2014were these missionaries who had done amazing things\u2014guys like Bill Bright or R.G. Letourneau, if you know who he was\u2014who did amazing things and either changed the world or donated millions of dollars for other people to change the world.\u00a0 I had to do that.\u00a0 This pressure drove me almost to death to try to do it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, at the end, when it seemed to be going so well, God let it all fall apart.\u00a0 I lost the whole thing in bankruptcy due to a lawsuit with a former distributor.\u00a0 I was so confused how God could let that happen, \u201cDidn\u2019t You see how much good I was doing with these vegetables?\u00a0 You really need them; right?\u201d\u00a0 God finally showed me what I had done.\u00a0 He showed me that I had made the work I was doing <em>for Him<\/em> more important than my relationship <em>with Him<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt came out of bad theology that God loves me because of what I can do for Him, not just because He made me.\u00a0 I realized that I had become miserable.\u00a0 It was affecting my health.\u00a0 It was affecting my family.\u00a0 I remember reading the fruit of the Spirit one night, sitting in bed with my wife, reading the fruit of the Spirit:\u00a0 peace, joy, love\u2014all these wonderful things.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have those things.\u00a0 I was like, \u201cWhat am I missing?\u201d\u00a0 I finally turned to my wife and said, \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019m a Christian because, if I\u2019m a Christian and the Spirit is in me, these things should be coming out of me.\u00a0 I\u2019m stressed, I\u2019m anxious, I\u2019m worried; and none of those are on this list.\u201d\u00a0 That led me on this search for, \u201cOkay, what am I missing?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realized what God was teaching me was I was hanging on to my dreams until they became idols\u2014my goals, my ambition\u2014and that God wanted me to let it all go, give it to Him, take my ambition and nail it to the cross.\u00a0 Until I was happy doing nothing for Him, except just resting in my relationship with Him, I shouldn\u2019t be doing anything for Him.\u00a0\u00a0 He got me to that point when <em>VeggieTales<\/em> got dragged away, and it literally left me with nothing to do but read my Bible.\u00a0 At first, I\u2019m thinking, \u201cOkay, give me something else!\u00a0 I need my next big idea, my next big thing,\u201d and God gave me nothing.\u00a0 After three months of just reading the Bible, suddenly I realized, \u201cI don\u2019t feel that need anymore.\u00a0 I don\u2019t feel the need to be impressive, to be ambitious,\u201d because the needs I had were being met by the Scripture I was reading and the life of prayer I was developing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s when I started to turn, and look back, and say, \u201cOkay, God.\u00a0 How can I share this with kids?\u201d\u00a0 I went off, on a tear, to say, \u201cOkay, this is fun.\u00a0 This is exciting.\u00a0 I want to share what I\u2019ve learned.\u00a0 I can now walk in peace.\u00a0 I can still do fun things for God; but they are not idols, and they do not define me.\u00a0 I\u2019m defined by my relationship with Him, and now let\u2019s see what I can do with Him, just walking with Him day to day.\u201d\u00a0 That led directly to this mission to walk kids all the way through the Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you look back on <em>VeggieTales<\/em> today.\u00a0 Do you think, \u201cI\u2019m really glad I did that,\u201d or do you think\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am glad I did that because of its primary message.\u00a0 The primary message of <em>VeggieTales<\/em>\u2014 which actually came from my mother, the children\u2019s ministry expert\u2014was, \u201cIn every episode, remind kids how much God loves them and how special they are.\u201d\u00a0 See, that message, \u201cGod made you special and loves you very much,\u201d was supposed to be the first line of a conversation.\u00a0 This is where we start.\u00a0 If we can accept this, \u201cThere is a God who made us and loves us,\u201d what\u2019s next?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUnfortunately, <em>VeggieTales<\/em> became so successful that suddenly, rather than continuing that conversation, I was in meetings about <em>VeggieTales<\/em> garden gloves and <em>VeggieTales<\/em> sew-at-home fabrics, and <em>VeggieTales<\/em> toys.\u00a0 Now put that little message, \u201cGod made you special\u201d on this line of underwear\u2014it just got ridiculous.\u00a0\u00a0 I never had time to continue the conversation.\u00a0 I realize, in a very real sense, God took that away so I could get back to what He called me to do, which is teach kids about Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think parents today are underselling their kids in terms of challenging them to the real authentic Christianity, to truly being a Christ-follower.\u00a0 Don\u2019t you agree?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Right; right.\u00a0 When we tell stories like Noah\u2019s ark and never mention God\u2019s judgment or His holiness, we\u2019re misrepresenting Scripture.\u00a0 When we tell the story of Israel and don\u2019t mention the Israelites getting swallowed up by the ground, or fire coming down from heaven and consuming half the camp of the Israelites\u2014not the bad guys, the Israelites!\u2014when we skip God\u2019s holiness, we do a disservice to our kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf they don\u2019t understand God\u2019s holiness, they have no idea why we need redemption\u2014and we don\u2019t even need a Savior.\u00a0 That\u2019s so key\u2014to walk them all the way through the story\u2014a thousand years of Israel messing up to know that, \u201cKids, you can\u2019t do it on your own.\u00a0 Stop trying.\u00a0 You can\u2019t do it.\u00a0 The beginning of accepting Jesus is to actually give up\u2014is to say, \u2018I can\u2019t do this on my own.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUntil you see what happened to Israel when they tried to do it on their own, it\u2019s hard to get to that point, when you\u2019re a kid.\u00a0 If you\u2019re 50 years old and you\u2019re an alcoholic, you\u2019re much more likely to say, \u201cI can\u2019t do this on my own;\u201d but when you\u2019re a kid, the only way is to hear stories about others\u2014to hear stories from the past.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we have the Old Testament, which we tend to skip, except for the cute little stories with animals.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re getting ready to do the New Testament.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s time for the New Testament.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve got to ask you.\u00a0 What is going to be the message of the New Testament?\u00a0 If that\u2019s the message of the Old\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 The key of the New Testament\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where are you heading?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 The Old Testament is a story without an ending.\u00a0 That\u2019s the Old Testament.\u00a0 It is a story that has no ending.\u00a0 The New Testament fulfills every promise of God that we find in the Old Testament.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we spent so much time in the Old Testament, to lay down, \u201cOkay, what did God promise to Abraham?\u00a0 What did He promise to David?\u201d\u00a0 We teach kids what the Davidic covenant is.\u00a0 Ian, the puppet, thinks <em>Davidic<\/em> is the funniest word he\u2019s ever heard; and he keeps making other people\u2019s names into words like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ian:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m Ian-ic and you\u2019re Clyde-ic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that\u2019s the way you make things sticky.\u00a0 That is a funny word\u2014Septuagint.\u00a0 Every time Captain Pete says that, his parrot thinks he\u2019s sneezing.\u00a0 He says, \u201cBless you.\u201d\u00a0 He says, [Captain Pete\u2019s voice] \u201cI did not sneeze.\u00a0 I said \u2018Septuagint.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe can make it fun to actually learn this stuff and then answer really tough questions\u2014the kind of questions that knock our kids\u2019 faith out from under them in high school and college\u2014questions like, \u201cWhat\u2019s with all the weird rules in Leviticus?\u00a0 It says, \u2018Be kind,\u2019 \u2018Share with others,\u2019 \u2018Don\u2019t kill,\u2019 and then it says, \u2018Don\u2019t trim your beard.\u00a0 Don\u2019t wear clothes out of two different kinds of fabrics.\u00a0 Don\u2019t eat bacon.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe obvious question is, \u201cWhy do we have to obey these rules, but not these rules?\u201d \u2014which becomes critical when they get to high school and something comes up, like homosexuality.\u00a0 They say, \u201cYes, sure, the Bible says homosexuality is wrong; but it also says it\u2019s wrong to eat bacon.\u201d\u00a0 If you can\u2019t stand up and say, \u201cHere\u2019s why these rules are not still followed in the New Testament and these rules are,\u201d \u2014if you can\u2019t explain that, you\u2019re helpless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re in trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are in trouble today.\u00a0 Questions like, \u201cWhy was it okay for the Israelites to kill all those Canaanites?\u00a0 Why was that okay?\u201d\u00a0 Have you ever heard that addressed in Sunday school?\u00a0 Of course not, because you\u2019d be crazy to try to get a volunteer Sunday school teacher to walk kids through that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s my question.\u00a0 It seems like it\u2019s one of those questions where there\u2019s an obvious answer.\u00a0 Of course, the answer should be, \u201cYes;\u201d but is there a market for this?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Seriously, you look around at what is going on in church and in families\u2014do parents today want a systematic approach to taking their kids through the whole Bible?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 They should.\u00a0 Many do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I guess you\u2019re trying to find out; aren\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to find out.\u00a0 It\u2019s a mixed bag.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had people just flat out say, \u201cYou know\u2014we like vegetables better.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to stick with <em>VeggieTales<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cDid you even watch it?\u00a0 Did you see how deep we\u2019re going?\u201d\u00a0 We have discovered, for a lot of people, they want to know how to keep their kids off drugs; they want to know how to keep their kids from having sex.\u00a0 If you say, \u201cI\u2019m going to walk your kids through the Bible,\u201d they don\u2019t quite make the connection between those things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They don\u2019t?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They want the moral behavior, but the theological foundation doesn\u2019t seem to be relevant to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, what it is\u2014it\u2019s really a commentary on how they view their own relationship with God and how they connect the Scriptures to their lives, practically, day in and day out\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014because what the series does\u2014if your kids go through this\u2014it\u2019s going to get sticky in their lives, and they\u2019re going to develop a Christian worldview.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to look at life through the eyes of the God who created them\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and the God who became flesh, and dwelt among us, and died on a cross, and rose again on the third day.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to begin to view life through the redemption story and begin to live it out in their own lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I think the best way to prepare kids for the hard questions they\u2019re going to find in life later on is to introduce those questions much earlier on.\u00a0 When we avoid the hard questions and then let our kids go out\u2014off to high school, go off to college\u2014having never faced these hard questions, they\u2019re doomed.\u00a0 They\u2019re absolutely doomed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome people say, \u201cYes; but if I introduce them when they\u2019re young, what if they start doubting?\u201d\u00a0 At some point, they have to start doubting because you\u2019ll never own your faith if you\u2019ve never doubted your faith.\u00a0 It never becomes personal if you\u2019ve never doubted it.\u00a0 Introducing these questions in a safe environment of a Sunday school class or your living room with your parents is a wonderful place to say, \u201cWhy was it okay for the Israelites to kill all those Canaanites?\u00a0 That seems like a terrible thing to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would say to a parent or a grandparent who is listening right now, who is wanting to feel more competent in passing on the real relationship with Jesus Christ, that a DVD series like this is going to give you tons of opportunities to begin to connect with your children around weighty issues of life, around the Bible\u2014talk with them, interact with them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBack to your question, Bob, \u201cIs there a market for this?\u201d\u00a0 I think there is because I think parents go on trips.\u00a0 I think there are all kinds of video machines now, in cars and minivans\u2014that parents are always looking for something better than what the world offers.\u00a0 This series is going to be played, I think, like we used to play <em>The<\/em> <em>Chronicles of Narnia<\/em> on our cassette tape, back when our kids were little. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve had a lot of parents write us and say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m learning alongside my kids.\u00a0 I don\u2019t necessarily want to admit that to my kids, but I\u2019m learning alongside my kids,\u201d to the point where we\u2019ve had a few adult small groups start going through the series, just with grown-ups, because it\u2019s such a good introduction to the faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you toss out a question like, \u201cWhy was it okay for those Israelites to kill all those Canaanites?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing most of the people listening are going, \u201cThat is a good question.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know that I have an answer for that,\u201d and there is an answer\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Let\u2019s dive into it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in First and Second Kings and Chronicles\u2014if you buy the <em>What\u2019s in the Bible?<\/em> series.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Phil, I really appreciate you persevering and going through a difficult valley in your own personal life.\u00a0 You\u2019re a gifted man, a godly man, and you haven\u2019t retreated.\u00a0 God has you alive for a purpose.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Phil:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m having so much more fun now.\u00a0 God doesn\u2019t call us to impact;
