Everything changed for Lon and Brenda Solomon and their whole family when their baby daughter, Jill, started convulsing uncontrollably daily.\u00a0 When the doctors had no answer, no way to fix her, Brenda says, \u201cIn times like that, you better have a deep well.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 To have the Word of God inside of you before you hit a crisis, I learned is so important.\u00a0 There was no time for Bible study.\u00a0 There was no time to go to church.\u00a0 There was no time to do anything except take what I had already in my heart, already in memory, and just keep saying, \u201cLord, I know You say this.\u00a0 I know You say this.\u00a0 Show me.\u00a0 I know You say You will never leave me nor forsake me\u2014just show me today that You know where I am.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, August 30<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Brenda Solomon joins us today to tell us about the events in her life that taught her that God really is more than enough.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 A lot of the journey of life that we\u2019re on, there are some tweaks along the path where you have to make some adjustments, but there are times when the journey, when instead of a tweak, there\u2019s a hairpin curve, life takes a new direction, and everything changes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you\u2019re in the hairpin turn and the forces of gravity are pinning you against your seat and you feel like \u201cThis pain is too great.\u00a0 I want out from under this.\u00a0 How can anything good come out of what\u2019s happening in our situation?\u201d\u00a0 But Romans, chapter 8, verse 28, is a passage of Scripture that is true.\u00a0 It\u2019s one that is going to be illustrated in the story we\u2019re going to hear today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me just read that passage for you.\u00a0 \u201cAnd we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good for those who are called according to His purpose.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I look at that passage, and I think that is either true or not true\u2014nothing in between.\u00a0 Do we really believe that for those who love God and are called according to His purposes\u2014does He really work things together for good?\u00a0 Well, I can assure you it is true, and you\u2019re going to hear and find out how that was true and continues to be true through a great story we will share today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBrenda Solomon and Cameron Doolittle join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Cameron, Brenda, welcome to the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you, Dennis.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s great to have you two with us.\u00a0 Brenda is the cofounder of Jill\u2019s House, along with her husband Lon.\u00a0 They live in the Washington, D.C. area and give leadership to a little, country church called the McLean Bible in Vienna, Virginia.\u00a0 Anybody\u2014it\u2019s not really in Vienna, though, is it?\u00a0 It would be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, it\u2019s just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It would be in McLean.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it is in Vienna, but it started in McLean.\u00a0 We\u2019re just around the corner.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to explain where we are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is hard to explain.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re just across the street.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This church has no identity crisis, though.\u00a0 It has 15,000 people attending and is a very influential lighthouse within the nation\u2019s capitol.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCameron is the CEO and the President of Jill\u2019s House.\u00a0 They give leadership to a ministry that started because of, well, really, some circumstances in your life, Brenda, that you didn\u2019t bargain for, and certainly would never have dialed up for your life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 No way.\u00a0 No way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Share with our listeners what happened.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it was in 1992, and we had three boys.\u00a0 I was so happy being a mom.\u00a0 I loved being a mom.\u00a0 I always wanted a little girl, but I just figured that wasn\u2019t for us.\u00a0 Then, we had a surprise package when I was almost 40 years old.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, my.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, she looked perfect when she was born, and her name is Jill.\u00a0 We were so excited.\u00a0 The first thing Lon said to me is \u201cBrenda, you got your little girl.\u201d\u00a0 We figured this wasn\u2019t what we had planned, but this is exciting.\u00a0 We have a little girl.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to really be fun.\u00a0 <br><br>Everything was fine until three months.\u00a0 One day I was changing her diaper, and I noticed she started tremoring in her hand.\u00a0 She was having, what I didn\u2019t even know existed, focal seizures.\u00a0 This is our fourth child.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t think too much about it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went out to Lon before he left for the church, and I said, \u201cLon, you\u2019re not going to believe what Jill just did.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cOh, Brenda, don\u2019t worry about it.\u00a0 You know babies do funny things.\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t worry about it.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even think a thing about it after that.\u00a0 He just brushed it off and so did I.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut that was on a Tuesday; and Saturday night, he was working.\u00a0 It was before he had Saturday night services at McLean.\u00a0 It was late.\u00a0 He was still working on his message and going over it, and she did it again, but this time on her opposite side.\u00a0 It lasted a lot longer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI grabbed her, and I took her to Lon.\u00a0 I said, \u201cLon, this is what she\u2019s doing.\u00a0 Look what she\u2019s doing.\u201d\u00a0 We just had the presence of mind to grab a video camera.\u00a0 We were going into the pediatrician that Monday for the second round of immunizations, and we took that in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cWhat she\u2019s having are focal seizures.\u201d\u00a0 I still\u2014it just didn\u2019t even hit me. I just figured, \u201cGive her a pill.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou have to go to a neurologist,\u201d but \u201cgive her medicine.\u00a0 All the medicines we have today just stop these seizures.\u201d\u00a0 But they didn\u2019t stop.\u00a0 They got worse\u2014just worse.\u00a0 They grew in frequency.\u00a0 They grew in intensity.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis fun, smooth-running family just fell apart.\u00a0 I mean we were living in constant stress mode.\u00a0 I cannot even tell you how it impacted our family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you say frequency and intensity, was she having daily tremors?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 All the time, all the time.\u00a0 I mean, she just grew\u2014like the first Thanksgiving, this was in May.\u00a0 The first Thanksgiving, she had 19 grand mal seizures.\u00a0 We finally ended up in the ICU.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In one day?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 In one day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And a grand mal seizure is the whole body?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whole body seizure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Eyes roll back in the head kind of thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, exactly.\u00a0 I mean it\u2019s something\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And she\u2019s a six-month, seven-month old little girl?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 It\u2019s something you couldn\u2019t even dream could be happening to a child, your child.\u00a0 So, I was busy anyway like all mothers are in Northern Virginia before we had a baby with these boys just carpooling.\u00a0 Well, you can imagine that all stopped.\u00a0 It stopped.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just wanted to fix this problem.\u00a0 Now, Lon was pastoring an ever-growing church at the time.\u00a0 I was happily involved in ministry and getting my kids to church programs.\u00a0 This all stopped, and the stress, the discouragement, the sadness, the\u2014I just can\u2019t even put into words what we were going through.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your marriage, your family was completely reoriented around this little girl.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 I didn\u2019t like what was happening.\u00a0 I liked our family before, and I wanted to go back to that happy family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What were the doctors telling you about her prognosis?\u00a0 That she\u2019d grow out of this or that they\u2019d be able to treat it with medication?\u00a0 What were they saying?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 They just kept saying, \u201cThere\u2019s always new medication.\u00a0 We can always\u2014there\u2019s always a new medicine we can try,\u201d but we weren\u2019t seeing progress.\u00a0 We were seeing her go downhill pretty quickly.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, it was the daily routine of your life at this point?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was just like every day was the same as the day before.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t take her in the car.\u00a0 We couldn\u2019t go to the sports events.\u00a0 We couldn\u2019t go to church, and it was just impacting.\u00a0 There wasn\u2019t an area of our life that went untouched by this trial, this suffering, this pain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think Lon and I both began to deal with it in two different\u2014we just sort of dealt with the grief separately.\u00a0 It hurt so badly we couldn\u2019t even talk about it.\u00a0 I mean it was just like I would cry in the shower, and he still had a ministry.\u00a0 He never missed a Sunday preaching in the pulpit.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how he did it, honestly, because we had the rescue squad coming to our house several times a week.\u00a0 We were in ICU.\u00a0 We were out of ICU.\u00a0 We were\u2014I mean every\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How would you get a good night\u2019s rest?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 We weren\u2019t.\u00a0 Eight years, we never made it through the night.\u00a0 She\u2019d have seizures day and night.\u00a0 So, somebody had to be watching her all the time because if she had a seizure, you had to go and flip her on her side, so she wouldn\u2019t choke on mucus and things like that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of her seizures wouldn\u2019t stop.\u00a0 Then you\u2019d have to call the rescue squad.\u00a0 They\u2019d have to come, and they\u2019d have to give her IV.\u00a0 They\u2019d have to either take her to the hospital or stop this\u2014if the seizure wouldn\u2019t stop, they\u2019d have to take her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Then, your boys, how old were they?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were 14, 11, and seven.\u00a0 So, at a very busy time, they really depended on their parents to take them places, to do things with them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Nobody\u2019s got a driver\u2019s license yet?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 No one has a driver\u2019s license.\u00a0 Forget the family dinners together, the hurrying to get through your homework so the family could have devotions together, play board games together\u2014just what you thought of a happy family; and this was all gone.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were suffering, but they looked at us, and they felt like \u201cOur parents are going through so much.\u00a0 They don\u2019t need any of my problems.\u201d\u00a0 So, they held their problems in and tried to be strong for us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You mentioned earlier that the boys, at a point, felt like they were losing their parents\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to your attention to this little girl.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right. You know what?\u00a0 I had two prayers that I prayed all the time: \u201cGod, help them not hate You and help them not hate their sister.\u201d\u00a0 Because, basically, when that little girl came into our life, it took us away from them.\u00a0 I\u2019m happy to say, by the grace of God, both prayers were answered.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey loved their sister.\u00a0 We had one son who went away from the Lord for awhile in law school, and Lon wrote a book on brokenness.\u00a0 He read it; and in that book, he explains a lot of what we couldn\u2019t even verbalize of what we were going through during that process.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy son said\u2014he was sitting in his room reading this, and he just broke down and sobbed.\u00a0 He had to get up and close his door.\u00a0 Then he put the book away.\u00a0 Then he would get it out and read it.\u00a0 That\u2019s hard for a parent to hear.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve asked the question of how your marriage was doing, how your boys were doing.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t asked how you, how Lon, were individually handling these circumstances.\u00a0 Were you questioning God in the midst of that?\u00a0 I mean Romans 8:28 is a hard verse to hear.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As Bob talked about being pressed against the hairpin turn\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014you\u2019re in the turn, you\u2019re in it for eight years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014day and night.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Day and night, no end in sight.\u00a0 No end in sight.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t like she was getting better, and I wasn\u2019t\u2014I could see what was happening here.\u00a0 All\u00a0 these seizures were going to damage her brain if we didn\u2019t get them stopped.\u00a0 You know she met her milestones up through two-and-a-half.\u00a0 It was a miracle.\u00a0 She was talking.\u00a0 She knew her colors, but little by little, it started slipping away until she got to \u201cMomma\u201d and \u201cDaddy\u201d.\u00a0 Those were the last two words.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cLord, you can\u2019t lose those two things.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what you dream of your baby saying, \u201cMomma, Daddy.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, she was losing her cognitive ability to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right before our eyes, we could see it happening.\u00a0 I mean it was just all slipping away gradually.\u00a0 Then we started fighting for her life.\u00a0 Then it didn\u2019t quite matter if she could say \u201cMommy\u201d and \u201cDaddy\u201d anymore.\u00a0 We were just fighting.\u00a0 She got to the place where she couldn\u2019t sit up.\u00a0 It was just something you couldn\u2019t write a story about.\u00a0 You couldn\u2019t understand.\u00a0 You\u2019re watching your little baby suffer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were about two-and-a-half years into this, day and night, day and night.\u00a0 We finally\u2014our bodies just wore out.\u00a0 We were just depleted emotionally, physically, spiritually.\u00a0 Yet we had all those biblical truths that we\u2019d been taught all our lives.\u00a0 I grew up in a wonderful, Christian home.\u00a0 I memorized Scripture.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was a little bit frustrated with myself that I couldn\u2019t get a grip on this, that I couldn\u2019t say, \u201cOkay, God, I don\u2019t like this, but I know You have a plan.\u201d\u00a0 But I couldn\u2019t.\u00a0 I was just like, \u201cLord, this can\u2019t be what you have for our family.\u00a0 This just can\u2019t be.\u201d\u00a0 So, it was a little hard for me.\u00a0 But one thing that happened before I even had Jill, there was a verse of Scripture that just stuck to me.\u00a0 God gave it to me, and I claim it as my life verse right now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s Isaiah 41:10, and it\u2019s, \u201cFear not, for I am with you.\u00a0 Be not dismayed, for I am your God.\u00a0 I will strengthen you.\u00a0 I will help you.\u00a0 I will uphold you.\u201d\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t figure out why I couldn\u2019t shake this verse.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWell, maybe it\u2019s because I\u2019m having this baby, and I\u2019m a little older.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to really need God\u2019s resources.\u201d\u00a0 But it was much more than that.\u00a0 So you don\u2019t know how I just held onto that verse.\u00a0 That verse became so real to me.\u00a0 I just wouldn\u2019t let go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I remember two-and-a-half years into this.\u00a0 One day I just broke.\u00a0 Lon had gone off to church.\u00a0 The boys had gone off to school.\u00a0 Again, it was just like any other day; and I was on the floor.\u00a0 She had just had a major seizure.\u00a0 I sat there in a puddle of tears, and I said, \u201cLord, I can\u2019t do this anymore.\u00a0 You have to step in.\u00a0 Do something.\u00a0 I can\u2019t do it.\u00a0 I have nothing left to give.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI just pray, use her life in a mighty way.\u00a0 Don\u2019t waste this pain.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was almost like, at that moment, it was like I was finally embracing this and saying, \u201cGod, she\u2019s Yours.\u00a0 Do with her what You want.\u201d\u00a0 Things didn\u2019t get better after that.\u00a0 They got worse; but at that point, that day, some lady called me.\u00a0 I had never had anything happen in my life like this, and she said, \u201cBrenda, I don\u2019t know\u201d\u2014we never met.\u00a0 I had never met her before.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know why I\u2019m calling you, but God told me to call you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew right away--an answer to that prayer, \u201cGod step in and do something\u201d\u2014and she said, \u201cI don\u2019t know what I\u2019m supposed to do.\u00a0 Can I come over and see you?\u00a0 Can I visit Jill?\u00a0 Can I just see what we\u2019re dealing with here?\u201d\u00a0 She came over, and she said, \u201cGive me a few days.\u201d\u00a0 She came back to me, and she said, \u201cI know what you need.\u00a0 You need respite.\u00a0 You need to get some rest.\u201d\u00a0 I mean she could see it.\u00a0 This woman had dealt with disabilities herself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, she organized a group of people around us.\u00a0 She said, \u201cThe only thing I ask is that you send us a monthly prayer letter of all the needs your family is facing that month, and we are going to pray for you.\u00a0 You will never know who these people are, but I need\u2014we will pray for you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt revolutionized our lives.\u00a0 Our lives changed.\u00a0 Our perspective on life changed, and God could really minister to us because we were\u2014our body was being\u2014they were being refreshed physically.\u00a0 Then, you could hear spiritually.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how.\u00a0 It\u2019s just the way it is.\u00a0 I was so tired I was feeling ill.\u00a0 I was feeling sick; I was so tired.\u00a0 Anyway, that was life-changing for us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt wasn\u2019t long before\u2014it might have been a couple of months.\u00a0 I said, \u201cLon, I know what I need to spend the rest of my life doing.\u00a0 We need\u2014if we are struggling this much as a pastor\u2019s family, we know the Word of God, we know the truths, we have a wonderful body of believers at McLean who love us\u2014and if we\u2019re struggling this much, how in the world are other people making it?\u201d\u00a0 So, then, we started praying about what God would have us do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn 1996, we started\u2014because I couldn\u2019t bring Jill to church.\u00a0 There was no class to put her in.\u00a0 So, in 1996, we started with four children, and it was just a Sunday school class.\u00a0 Second week, it doubled in size.\u00a0 Then, it just kept exploding.\u00a0 It was like build it, and they will come.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 All special needs kids?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 All special needs kids, and at first, it was just so the parents could worship.\u00a0 That\u2019s what they needed.\u00a0 They needed to be refreshed.\u00a0 They needed to get in there and hear the worship songs and hear the message and know that God cared about what they were going through.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And they needed someone who knew what to do and how to care.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 They needed someone that was going to love their child.\u00a0 At that time, we had one-on-one for these children because they needed it.\u00a0 That grew and grew and grew.\u00a0 Then we started Friday night to have break out, break away, I guess it was called.\u00a0 That was for the child and the other siblings so the parents could have a date night.\u00a0 So, we started that.\u00a0 Then, we started break away which was on Saturdays for five hours, just for the child with the disability.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat also grew, but I just still felt\u2014Lon and I both felt like God wanted us to do more.\u00a0 So, we just kept praying about it and praying about it.\u00a0 God just really showed us there is a center\u2014there\u2019s a respite house like this called Shalva in Israel, in Jerusalem.\u00a0 Lon leads tours to Israel, and he had a man on his trip who said, \u201cI want you to come see this place.\u00a0 I want you to come see this place.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2019re very busy on these trips.\u00a0 I mean it\u2019s exhausting; and Lon said, \u201cI really can\u2019t.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have a break.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cJust give me one hour, one hour.\u201d\u00a0 Well, our youngest son was with Lon at that time.\u00a0 He was in the habit of taking one of our sons with him when he would go there.\u00a0 They spent four hours in this place.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLon said he walked into the lobby of Shalva, and he said, \u201cOh, my gosh!\u00a0 This is it.\u00a0 We can do this.\u00a0 We can do this back in the States.\u00a0 We can build a respite center, and help these families make it, get a break.\u201d\u00a0 So he called me right away as soon as he came out.\u00a0 He said, \u201cBrenda, I\u2019ve got to show you\u2014you\u2019re not going to believe this.\u00a0 I think we found what we need to do for the people in our community raising children with disabilities.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>So we were incorporated in 2003, but we actually didn\u2019t have opening day until 2010\u2014in the fall of 2010.\u00a0 But the only thing I can say\u2014I can\u2019t explain it.\u00a0 I just know it\u2019s a God thing because there is no explanation how God put all the pieces together and built this house.\u00a0 It\u2019s just God.\u00a0 It\u2019s a God thing.\u00a0 The need is so great.\u00a0 We have a waiting list, but you should hear the responses, and Cameron has so many great responses.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes, Cameron is here.\u00a0 Cameron, hi.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I\u2019m so sorry I\u2019m dominating the conversation here.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to hear more from Cameron later\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014but this house has 45 beds.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s for families to be able to leave a child that does have special needs but also there are other children as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, if a family doesn\u2019t feel comfortable to send just their child with disabilities, we have some rooms that are semiprivate, and you can bring a sibling, a normal sibling.\u00a0 Sometimes, parents feel more comfortable\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014if another child comes with them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s for single parents.\u00a0 It\u2019s for folks who are divorced, who find themselves in a very difficult situation.\u00a0 It\u2019s for families that have these challenges.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we were hearing more about your story, I made the statement to you\u2014and you know what I\u2019m about to say here.\u00a0 These needs across the nation are huge.\u00a0 We\u2019re touching on something that not only touches individual lives of people like, Brenda, you and Lon, who have a child like this but also people who\u2019ve been wanting to do something.\u00a0 They wonder \u201cWhat could we do?\u00a0 What could we do in our community, in our church? \u201c \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the deal: The church is\u2014it\u2019s the readymade place to begin to address the spiritual, emotional, physical well-being of single parents, of families, and of young people in situations like this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You may not be able to build a house; but you can do a Sunday school class\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014or you can do a Saturday.\u00a0 I mean, again, there are all kinds of small solutions, steps that you can take and then see what God does with that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you go to our website, FamilyLifeToday.com, \u201cIn times like that, you better have a deep well.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 To have the Word of God inside of you before you hit a crisis, I learned is so important.\u00a0 There was no time for Bible study.\u00a0 There was no time to go to church.\u00a0 There was no time to do anything except take what I had already in my heart, already in memory, and just keep saying, \u201cLord, I know You say this.\u00a0 I know You say this.\u00a0 Show me.\u00a0 I know You say You will never leave me nor forsake me\u2014just show me today that You know where I am.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, August 30<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Brenda Solomon joins us today to tell us about the events in her life that taught her that God really is more than enough.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 A lot of the journey of life that we\u2019re on, there are some tweaks along the path where you have to make some adjustments, but there are times when the journey, when instead of a tweak, there\u2019s a hairpin curve, life takes a new direction, and everything changes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you\u2019re in the hairpin turn and the forces of gravity are pinning you against your seat and you feel like \u201cThis pain is too great.\u00a0 I want out from under this.\u00a0 How can anything good come out of what\u2019s happening in our situation?\u201d\u00a0 But Romans, chapter 8, verse 28, is a passage of Scripture that is true.\u00a0 It\u2019s one that is going to be illustrated in the story we\u2019re going to hear today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me just read that passage for you.\u00a0 \u201cAnd we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good for those who are called according to His purpose.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I look at that passage, and I think that is either true or not true\u2014nothing in between.\u00a0 Do we really believe that for those who love God and are called according to His purposes\u2014does He really work things together for good?\u00a0 Well, I can assure you it is true, and you\u2019re going to hear and find out how that was true and continues to be true through a great story we will share today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBrenda Solomon and Cameron Doolittle join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Cameron, Brenda, welcome to the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cameron:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you, Dennis.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s great to have you two with us.\u00a0 Brenda is the cofounder of Jill\u2019s House, along with her husband Lon.\u00a0 They live in the Washington, D.C. area and give leadership to a little, country church called the McLean Bible in Vienna, Virginia.\u00a0 Anybody\u2014it\u2019s not really in Vienna, though, is it?\u00a0 It would be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, it\u2019s just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It would be in McLean.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it is in Vienna, but it started in McLean.\u00a0 We\u2019re just around the corner.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to explain where we are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is hard to explain.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re just across the street.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This church has no identity crisis, though.\u00a0 It has 15,000 people attending and is a very influential lighthouse within the nation\u2019s capitol.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCameron is the CEO and the President of Jill\u2019s House.\u00a0 They give leadership to a ministry that started because of, well, really, some circumstances in your life, Brenda, that you didn\u2019t bargain for, and certainly would never have dialed up for your life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 No way.\u00a0 No way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Share with our listeners what happened.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it was in 1992, and we had three boys.\u00a0 I was so happy being a mom.\u00a0 I loved being a mom.\u00a0 I always wanted a little girl, but I just figured that wasn\u2019t for us.\u00a0 Then, we had a surprise package when I was almost 40 years old.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, my.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, she looked perfect when she was born, and her name is Jill.\u00a0 We were so excited.\u00a0 The first thing Lon said to me is \u201cBrenda, you got your little girl.\u201d\u00a0 We figured this wasn\u2019t what we had planned, but this is exciting.\u00a0 We have a little girl.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to really be fun.\u00a0 <br><br>Everything was fine until three months.\u00a0 One day I was changing her diaper, and I noticed she started tremoring in her hand.\u00a0 She was having, what I didn\u2019t even know existed, focal seizures.\u00a0 This is our fourth child.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t think too much about it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went out to Lon before he left for the church, and I said, \u201cLon, you\u2019re not going to believe what Jill just did.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cOh, Brenda, don\u2019t worry about it.\u00a0 You know babies do funny things.\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t worry about it.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even think a thing about it after that.\u00a0 He just brushed it off and so did I.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut that was on a Tuesday; and Saturday night, he was working.\u00a0 It was before he had Saturday night services at McLean.\u00a0 It was late.\u00a0 He was still working on his message and going over it, and she did it again, but this time on her opposite side.\u00a0 It lasted a lot longer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI grabbed her, and I took her to Lon.\u00a0 I said, \u201cLon, this is what she\u2019s doing.\u00a0 Look what she\u2019s doing.\u201d\u00a0 We just had the presence of mind to grab a video camera.\u00a0 We were going into the pediatrician that Monday for the second round of immunizations, and we took that in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cWhat she\u2019s having are focal seizures.\u201d\u00a0 I still\u2014it just didn\u2019t even hit me. I just figured, \u201cGive her a pill.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou have to go to a neurologist,\u201d but \u201cgive her medicine.\u00a0 All the medicines we have today just stop these seizures.\u201d\u00a0 But they didn\u2019t stop.\u00a0 They got worse\u2014just worse.\u00a0 They grew in frequency.\u00a0 They grew in intensity.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis fun, smooth-running family just fell apart.\u00a0 I mean we were living in constant stress mode.\u00a0 I cannot even tell you how it impacted our family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you say frequency and intensity, was she having daily tremors?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 All the time, all the time.\u00a0 I mean, she just grew\u2014like the first Thanksgiving, this was in May.\u00a0 The first Thanksgiving, she had 19 grand mal seizures.\u00a0 We finally ended up in the ICU.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In one day?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 In one day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And a grand mal seizure is the whole body?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whole body seizure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Eyes roll back in the head kind of thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, exactly.\u00a0 I mean it\u2019s something\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And she\u2019s a six-month, seven-month old little girl?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 It\u2019s something you couldn\u2019t even dream could be happening to a child, your child.\u00a0 So, I was busy anyway like all mothers are in Northern Virginia before we had a baby with these boys just carpooling.\u00a0 Well, you can imagine that all stopped.\u00a0 It stopped.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just wanted to fix this problem.\u00a0 Now, Lon was pastoring an ever-growing church at the time.\u00a0 I was happily involved in ministry and getting my kids to church programs.\u00a0 This all stopped, and the stress, the discouragement, the sadness, the\u2014I just can\u2019t even put into words what we were going through.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your marriage, your family was completely reoriented around this little girl.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 I didn\u2019t like what was happening.\u00a0 I liked our family before, and I wanted to go back to that happy family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What were the doctors telling you about her prognosis?\u00a0 That she\u2019d grow out of this or that they\u2019d be able to treat it with medication?\u00a0 What were they saying?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 They just kept saying, \u201cThere\u2019s always new medication.\u00a0 We can always\u2014there\u2019s always a new medicine we can try,\u201d but we weren\u2019t seeing progress.\u00a0 We were seeing her go downhill pretty quickly.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, it was the daily routine of your life at this point?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was just like every day was the same as the day before.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t take her in the car.\u00a0 We couldn\u2019t go to the sports events.\u00a0 We couldn\u2019t go to church, and it was just impacting.\u00a0 There wasn\u2019t an area of our life that went untouched by this trial, this suffering, this pain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think Lon and I both began to deal with it in two different\u2014we just sort of dealt with the grief separately.\u00a0 It hurt so badly we couldn\u2019t even talk about it.\u00a0 I mean it was just like I would cry in the shower, and he still had a ministry.\u00a0 He never missed a Sunday preaching in the pulpit.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how he did it, honestly, because we had the rescue squad coming to our house several times a week.\u00a0 We were in ICU.\u00a0 We were out of ICU.\u00a0 We were\u2014I mean every\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How would you get a good night\u2019s rest?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 We weren\u2019t.\u00a0 Eight years, we never made it through the night.\u00a0 She\u2019d have seizures day and night.\u00a0 So, somebody had to be watching her all the time because if she had a seizure, you had to go and flip her on her side, so she wouldn\u2019t choke on mucus and things like that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of her seizures wouldn\u2019t stop.\u00a0 Then you\u2019d have to call the rescue squad.\u00a0 They\u2019d have to come, and they\u2019d have to give her IV.\u00a0 They\u2019d have to either take her to the hospital or stop this\u2014if the seizure wouldn\u2019t stop, they\u2019d have to take her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Then, your boys, how old were they?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were 14, 11, and seven.\u00a0 So, at a very busy time, they really depended on their parents to take them places, to do things with them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Nobody\u2019s got a driver\u2019s license yet?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 No one has a driver\u2019s license.\u00a0 Forget the family dinners together, the hurrying to get through your homework so the family could have devotions together, play board games together\u2014just what you thought of a happy family; and this was all gone.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were suffering, but they looked at us, and they felt like \u201cOur parents are going through so much.\u00a0 They don\u2019t need any of my problems.\u201d\u00a0 So, they held their problems in and tried to be strong for us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You mentioned earlier that the boys, at a point, felt like they were losing their parents\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to your attention to this little girl.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right. You know what?\u00a0 I had two prayers that I prayed all the time: \u201cGod, help them not hate You and help them not hate their sister.\u201d\u00a0 Because, basically, when that little girl came into our life, it took us away from them.\u00a0 I\u2019m happy to say, by the grace of God, both prayers were answered.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey loved their sister.\u00a0 We had one son who went away from the Lord for awhile in law school, and Lon wrote a book on brokenness.\u00a0 He read it; and in that book, he explains a lot of what we couldn\u2019t even verbalize of what we were going through during that process.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy son said\u2014he was sitting in his room reading this, and he just broke down and sobbed.\u00a0 He had to get up and close his door.\u00a0 Then he put the book away.\u00a0 Then he would get it out and read it.\u00a0 That\u2019s hard for a parent to hear.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve asked the question of how your marriage was doing, how your boys were doing.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t asked how you, how Lon, were individually handling these circumstances.\u00a0 Were you questioning God in the midst of that?\u00a0 I mean Romans 8:28 is a hard verse to hear.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As Bob talked about being pressed against the hairpin turn\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014you\u2019re in the turn, you\u2019re in it for eight years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014day and night.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Day and night, no end in sight.\u00a0 No end in sight.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t like she was getting better, and I wasn\u2019t\u2014I could see what was happening here.\u00a0 All\u00a0 these seizures were going to damage her brain if we didn\u2019t get them stopped.\u00a0 You know she met her milestones up through two-and-a-half.\u00a0 It was a miracle.\u00a0 She was talking.\u00a0 She knew her colors, but little by little, it started slipping away until she got to \u201cMomma\u201d and \u201cDaddy\u201d.\u00a0 Those were the last two words.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cLord, you can\u2019t lose those two things.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what you dream of your baby saying, \u201cMomma, Daddy.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, she was losing her cognitive ability to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right before our eyes, we could see it happening.\u00a0 I mean it was just all slipping away gradually.\u00a0 Then we started fighting for her life.\u00a0 Then it didn\u2019t quite matter if she could say \u201cMommy\u201d and \u201cDaddy\u201d anymore.\u00a0 We were just fighting.\u00a0 She got to the place where she couldn\u2019t sit up.\u00a0 It was just something you couldn\u2019t write a story about.\u00a0 You couldn\u2019t understand.\u00a0 You\u2019re watching your little baby suffer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were about two-and-a-half years into this, day and night, day and night.\u00a0 We finally\u2014our bodies just wore out.\u00a0 We were just depleted emotionally, physically, spiritually.\u00a0 Yet we had all those biblical truths that we\u2019d been taught all our lives.\u00a0 I grew up in a wonderful, Christian home.\u00a0 I memorized Scripture.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was a little bit frustrated with myself that I couldn\u2019t get a grip on this, that I couldn\u2019t say, \u201cOkay, God, I don\u2019t like this, but I know You have a plan.\u201d\u00a0 But I couldn\u2019t.\u00a0 I was just like, \u201cLord, this can\u2019t be what you have for our family.\u00a0 This just can\u2019t be.\u201d\u00a0 So, it was a little hard for me.\u00a0 But one thing that happened before I even had Jill, there was a verse of Scripture that just stuck to me.\u00a0 God gave it to me, and I claim it as my life verse right now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s Isaiah 41:10, and it\u2019s, \u201cFear not, for I am with you.\u00a0 Be not dismayed, for I am your God.\u00a0 I will strengthen you.\u00a0 I will help you.\u00a0 I will uphold you.\u201d\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t figure out why I couldn\u2019t shake this verse.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWell, maybe it\u2019s because I\u2019m having this baby, and I\u2019m a little older.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to really need God\u2019s resources.\u201d\u00a0 But it was much more than that.\u00a0 So you don\u2019t know how I just held onto that verse.\u00a0 That verse became so real to me.\u00a0 I just wouldn\u2019t let go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>I remember two-and-a-half years into this.\u00a0 One day I just broke.\u00a0 Lon had gone off to church.\u00a0 The boys had gone off to school.\u00a0 Again, it was just like any other day; and I was on the floor.\u00a0 She had just had a major seizure.\u00a0 I sat there in a puddle of tears, and I said, \u201cLord, I can\u2019t do this anymore.\u00a0 You have to step in.\u00a0 Do something.\u00a0 I can\u2019t do it.\u00a0 I have nothing left to give.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI just pray, use her life in a mighty way.\u00a0 Don\u2019t waste this pain.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was almost like, at that moment, it was like I was finally embracing this and saying, \u201cGod, she\u2019s Yours.\u00a0 Do with her what You want.\u201d\u00a0 Things didn\u2019t get better after that.\u00a0 They got worse; but at that point, that day, some lady called me.\u00a0 I had never had anything happen in my life like this, and she said, \u201cBrenda, I don\u2019t know\u201d\u2014we never met.\u00a0 I had never met her before.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know why I\u2019m calling you, but God told me to call you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew right away--an answer to that prayer, \u201cGod step in and do something\u201d\u2014and she said, \u201cI don\u2019t know what I\u2019m supposed to do.\u00a0 Can I come over and see you?\u00a0 Can I visit Jill?\u00a0 Can I just see what we\u2019re dealing with here?\u201d\u00a0 She came over, and she said, \u201cGive me a few days.\u201d\u00a0 She came back to me, and she said, \u201cI know what you need.\u00a0 You need respite.\u00a0 You need to get some rest.\u201d\u00a0 I mean she could see it.\u00a0 This woman had dealt with disabilities herself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, she organized a group of people around us.\u00a0 She said, \u201cThe only thing I ask is that you send us a monthly prayer letter of all the needs your family is facing that month, and we are going to pray for you.\u00a0 You will never know who these people are, but I need\u2014we will pray for you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt revolutionized our lives.\u00a0 Our lives changed.\u00a0 Our perspective on life changed, and God could really minister to us because we were\u2014our body was being\u2014they were being refreshed physically.\u00a0 Then, you could hear spiritually.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how.\u00a0 It\u2019s just the way it is.\u00a0 I was so tired I was feeling ill.\u00a0 I was feeling sick; I was so tired.\u00a0 Anyway, that was life-changing for us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt wasn\u2019t long before\u2014it might have been a couple of months.\u00a0 I said, \u201cLon, I know what I need to spend the rest of my life doing.\u00a0 We need\u2014if we are struggling this much as a pastor\u2019s family, we know the Word of God, we know the truths, we have a wonderful body of believers at McLean who love us\u2014and if we\u2019re struggling this much, how in the world are other people making it?\u201d\u00a0 So, then, we started praying about what God would have us do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn 1996, we started\u2014because I couldn\u2019t bring Jill to church.\u00a0 There was no class to put her in.\u00a0 So, in 1996, we started with four children, and it was just a Sunday school class.\u00a0 Second week, it doubled in size.\u00a0 Then, it just kept exploding.\u00a0 It was like build it, and they will come.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 All special needs kids?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 All special needs kids, and at first, it was just so the parents could worship.\u00a0 That\u2019s what they needed.\u00a0 They needed to be refreshed.\u00a0 They needed to get in there and hear the worship songs and hear the message and know that God cared about what they were going through.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And they needed someone who knew what to do and how to care.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 They needed someone that was going to love their child.\u00a0 At that time, we had one-on-one for these children because they needed it.\u00a0 That grew and grew and grew.\u00a0 Then we started Friday night to have break out, break away, I guess it was called.\u00a0 That was for the child and the other siblings so the parents could have a date night.\u00a0 So, we started that.\u00a0 Then, we started break away which was on Saturdays for five hours, just for the child with the disability.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat also grew, but I just still felt\u2014Lon and I both felt like God wanted us to do more.\u00a0 So, we just kept praying about it and praying about it.\u00a0 God just really showed us there is a center\u2014there\u2019s a respite house like this called Shalva in Israel, in Jerusalem.\u00a0 Lon leads tours to Israel, and he had a man on his trip who said, \u201cI want you to come see this place.\u00a0 I want you to come see this place.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2019re very busy on these trips.\u00a0 I mean it\u2019s exhausting; and Lon said, \u201cI really can\u2019t.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have a break.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cJust give me one hour, one hour.\u201d\u00a0 Well, our youngest son was with Lon at that time.\u00a0 He was in the habit of taking one of our sons with him when he would go there.\u00a0 They spent four hours in this place.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLon said he walked into the lobby of Shalva, and he said, \u201cOh, my gosh!\u00a0 This is it.\u00a0 We can do this.\u00a0 We can do this back in the States.\u00a0 We can build a respite center, and help these families make it, get a break.\u201d\u00a0 So he called me right away as soon as he came out.\u00a0 He said, \u201cBrenda, I\u2019ve got to show you\u2014you\u2019re not going to believe this.\u00a0 I think we found what we need to do for the people in our community raising children with disabilities.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>So we were incorporated in 2003, but we actually didn\u2019t have opening day until 2010\u2014in the fall of 2010.\u00a0 But the only thing I can say\u2014I can\u2019t explain it.\u00a0 I just know it\u2019s a God thing because there is no explanation how God put all the pieces together and built this house.\u00a0 It\u2019s just God.\u00a0 It\u2019s a God thing.\u00a0 The need is so great.\u00a0 We have a waiting list, but you should hear the responses, and Cameron has so many great responses.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes, Cameron is here.\u00a0 Cameron, hi.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I\u2019m so sorry I\u2019m dominating the conversation here.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to hear more from Cameron later\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014but this house has 45 beds.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s for families to be able to leave a child that does have special needs but also there are other children as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, if a family doesn\u2019t feel comfortable to send just their child with disabilities, we have some rooms that are semiprivate, and you can bring a sibling, a normal sibling.\u00a0 Sometimes, parents feel more comfortable\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Brenda:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014if another child comes with them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s for single parents.\u00a0 It\u2019s for folks who are divorced, who find themselves in a very difficult situation.\u00a0 It\u2019s for families that have these challenges.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we were hearing more about your story, I made the statement to you\u2014and you know what I\u2019m about to say here.\u00a0 These needs across the nation are huge.\u00a0 We\u2019re touching on something that not only touches individual lives of people like, Brenda, you and Lon, who have a child like this but also people who\u2019ve been wanting to do something.\u00a0 They wonder \u201cWhat could we do?\u00a0 What could we do in our community, in our church? \u201c \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the deal: The church is\u2014it\u2019s the readymade place to begin to address the spiritual, emotional, physical well-being of single parents, of families, and of young people in situations like this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You may not be able to build a house;
