A lot of young people are headed off to college or university.\u00a0 Maybe they are headed to high school for the first time, maybe even junior high for the first time.\u00a0 Each of those young men or women is beginning a new chapter in their lives, and the moms and dads need to be ready to appropriately let go of those kids.\u00a0 Here\u2019s Michael DiMarco.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 I picture so many parents today running as fast as they can, holding the shaft of the arrow, trying to run with it and be the flight, and afraid that the winds of the Holy Spirit\u2014to use this picture\u2014will direct them in a dangerous path.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ll let you go on a mission trip to Panama City, Florida; but I won\u2019t let you go to Mexico,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019ll let you go to Mexico, but I won\u2019t let you go to Yemen.\u201d\u00a0 We feel like, \u201cThese are our kids.\u00a0 These are our possessions.\u00a0 We need to protect them,\u201d\u2014but they\u2019re really God\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, August 14<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 It\u2019s a delicate balance for us, as parents, to know when to hang on and when to start letting go.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk more about that today.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0\u00a0 You know, when you think about the years, right after high school\u2014whether it\u2019s in the military service, or at college, or in the workplace\u2014those years when young people unplug from the home structure and start to spread their wings, which is\u2014it\u2019s the right and appropriate thing to do; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 It has to happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But when that happens, it seems like there are all kinds of new, fresh temptations, that weren\u2019t there before, that are there now.\u00a0 For example, when I went off to college, there was a place that was about five blocks from campus called The Tap Room.\u00a0 It seems like that was a popular place for a number of students to go, even students who did not\u2014it had nothing to do with tap dancing, alright?\u00a0 And it was not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Tapping sound effects]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t tapping?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was not tapping on the door, no.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Lots of students went there and even students who did not have a driver\u2019s license that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to picture you in The Tap Room.\u00a0 [Laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014made it possible to get alcoholic beverages.\u00a0 They could go with somebody who did have that driver\u2019s license and apparently that guy could buy two.\u00a0 At least, this is what I heard.\u00a0 I can\u2019t give any personal testimony to this.\u00a0 But when I was in high school, there was no Tap Room five blocks away from where I lived.\u00a0 When I was in college, it was right around the corner.\u00a0 That\u2019s where people went and they had fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And there was no freedom, had there been one, because you were living under the authority\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I had ways.\u00a0 I had ways!\u00a0 [Laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we all know that you more than likely\u2014you likely did, but we are talking about the whole concept of independence day, when our sons and daughters are launched into life, whether that be college, to service, to work, perhaps maybe leaving home to get married\u2014but they need coaching and they need a good send-off.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFortunately, our friends, Michael and Hayley DiMarco, have helped us out by writing a book called <em>Independence Day<\/em>, which is designed to be given\u2014right, Michael \u2014 to your son or daughter?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Well, not my son or daughter because I only have a daughter; and she\u2019s seven.\u00a0 Actually, not just to sons or daughters\u2014but, also, the cool thing about this book, that I think is really unique\u2014is it\u2019s definitely rooted in Scripture, but I used a really slow kind of reveal towards the spiritual in this\u2014so it works for even a gift for a non-Christian friend that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A young man or woman that hasn\u2019t been in church can still benefit from this book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Yes, and hopefully eternally, by the time they get to the end.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You guys have written a number of books for youth over the years and have been very successful in that.\u00a0 I found it interesting in the book, Michael, that you told a story about graduation night\u2014after you\u2019d graduated and you were dancing with this babe who whispers something in your ear.\u00a0 She confesses something to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I was clueless, which is evidently in my DNA because it wasn\u2019t something I outgrew.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hasn\u2019t gone away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, but I was clueless about girls.\u00a0 Yes, a girl cheerleader asked me to dance, like the last slow dance of the night.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI\u2019ve had the biggest crush on you.\u00a0 Why did you never ask me out?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re both graduating seniors.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cUh-h-h.\u201d\u00a0 My answer was, \u201cBecause I\u2019m stupid!\u201d\u00a0 At least, I was as self-aware then as I am now.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Then, I had some lame response of, \u201cWell, maybe we can get together this summer;\u201d but she was moving off out of state, like within the next week\u2014and pfft, it was gone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley:<\/strong>\u00a0 As quick as it came.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you run into this young lady, years later, at a reunion\u2014a high school reunion?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, decades, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 She, at the time\u2014back up a little bit\u2014when I was a senior in high school, I had thought I was going to be a police officer.\u00a0 I was starting to serve in the police reserves in my local police department.\u00a0 I wanted to get married at a young age because my father and mother had me late in life.\u00a0 My father was retired and had gray hair at my graduation.\u00a0 They said, \u201cOh, your grandpa came to graduation.\u201d\u00a0 So, I really wanted this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFast forward to the class reunion\u2014she\u2019s married, has a bunch of kids, married a police officer.\u00a0 It just\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It could have been your life; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 In my high-school mind, that was my dream life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting that you share that story in the book, especially as you look around the theme of temptation, which is one of the things that young people are facing as they face independence day.\u00a0 Girls are not just whispering in guys\u2019 ears today, \u201cI have a crush on you.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019re whispering a lot more than that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 And they\u2019re not whispering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, here, about launching my son\u2014my smart, good-looking young man\u2014off to college and going, \u201cWhat\u2019s he going to do if that happens\u2014when that happens?\u00a0 What would I have done if that had happened?\u201d\u00a0 Those are hard circumstances that are facing young men and women as they head toward independence day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 I say in the book that there are three truths about temptation:\u00a0 everyone\u2019s tempted, everyone falls, but not everyone falls as far.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, in preparing for our independence days in life, especially the <em>big one<\/em> of high school or college graduation, it\u2019s important to realize that temptation has a purpose.\u00a0 There\u2019s actually an upside to temptation as well as the huge downside.\u00a0 The upside to temptation is that temptation is good because it reveals where we can be weakest.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, I am not tempted to overindulge in tap dancing, like you were as a college\u2014[Laughter] \u2014I\u2019m not tempted by alcohol, either.\u00a0 I\u2019m just not; but in the area of like donuts, that\u2019s a bigger temptation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a different deal; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 So I know that I need more self-control there.\u00a0 I know I need to be more mindful in those areas.\u00a0 Temptation does have an upside in that, when we\u2019re tempted, it\u2019s a yellow to red flag that says, \u201cThis is an area of my life that I need God in.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting\u2014the Bible speaks about temptation from Genesis to Revelation.\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget this\u2014and it was back in a time, not when I got my independence day \u2014but Barbara and I had been married about 20 years.\u00a0 There were some things occurring in her life and in our life, as a couple, that I was dealing with.\u00a0 It was a time when there were temptations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI listened to a series of broadcasts, as I jogged, by Charles Stanley.\u00a0 It was 20 cassette tapes.\u00a0 I had no idea the Bible had that much to say about temptation.\u00a0 I have to say that listening to that teaching was really instructive to me\u2014not only as a man, as a husband, and a father who wanted to instruct his own children\u2014but it really formed a core to say, \u201cWe\u2019ve got to equip the next generation to know how to handle this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHayley, what I\u2019d ask you\u2014you\u2019ve got a seven-year-old daughter.\u00a0 How do you want to help her?\u00a0 What do you want to equip her to do when it comes to temptation because she will be free, and she will experience temptation, and opportunity?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 Well, I think there are a lot of temptations that are gradual\u2014which, donuts might be a good example\u2014where we start to indulge in something because of the way it makes us feel.\u00a0 It\u2019s not too bad because it\u2019s just one donut.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And a donut is not sinful.\u00a0 I mean, you\u2019re not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 No, it\u2019s not sinful, a donut; right?\u00a0 No; but as you start to want to indulge, and you start thinking about donuts more often, and you start wanting them regularly, to the point where they start to consume you\u2014you see where, then, you have this temptation of\u2014well, for my analogy, we\u2019re talking about this gluttony of donuts.\u00a0 If I can instill in her the concept of idolatry\u2014of, \u201cWhere do you place your worship?\u201d\u00a0 In the beginning, it\u2019s not sin, like you said; but as we start to worship it more, it becomes a sin.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s the problem for a lot of young people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think you\u2019ve hit on something that\u2019s very important with teenagers because we can have a tendency to want to impose moral structure around a young person and get them thinking that their spiritual life is that moral behavior\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014rather than having them understand the heart issues\u2014because, back to donuts, a donut is not a sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The sin issue for you, Michael, is gluttony or being controlled by this obsession that you got to\u2014it\u2019s hot, and it\u2019s ready, and so it becomes controlling behavior.\u00a0 This is where I really think we have to help teenagers see it\u2019s not the donut\u2014it\u2019s the heart that\u2019s the issue\u2014so that they understand that the relationship with God is not about how I\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rules.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014how I check off the rules.\u00a0 It\u2019s about how I relate to God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 When I was in high school, I had a shop teacher.\u00a0 At the very beginning of shop class\u2014the first shop class that you\u2019d ever take with him\u2014he would talk about safety around the band saw and the table saw.\u00a0 He would talk, and he would do this demonstration, with four fingers, because that\u2019s all he had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you noticed that he only had four fingers, and he\u2019s talking about safety around a table saw and a band saw\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You pay attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014you paid more attention.\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of how I wrote this book, as a four-fingered author.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I\u2019m so open about this.\u00a0 I try to talk about the three areas where most temptations come from\u2014those three areas being appetite, which we\u2019ve already covered with donuts\u2014but it also has to do with stuff that you buy and relationships and love.\u00a0 Also, beyond appetite, there\u2019s affirmation\u2014people-pleasing, doing things to be part of the crowd, peer pressure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then the third is ambition\u2014doing whatever it takes\u2014sacrificing your morals, your faith, for achievement.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I draw that parallel in towards the end, with the story of Jesus going out to the wilderness in Matthew 4\u2014those three temptations\u2014and try to draw that parallel so we can reverse-engineer for students how temptation happens and use different examples from each three. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve talked about freedom.\u00a0 We\u2019ve talked about temptation and equipping your son or daughter to handle that.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t talked as much about opportunity.\u00a0 What\u2019s at the core of opportunity, as you launch that child toward independence?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the coolest things about independence day \u2014about high school graduation, especially\u2014is we can all look back on that time.\u00a0 If you give anyone that tempting thought, \u201cIf you could go back to any point in your life and start over, where would you start?\u201d most people go to high school because of all of the opportunities, all of the bad choices that they made, all of the missed opportunities all started <em>after<\/em> that.\u00a0 It\u2019s the most opportunity-rich moment in any young person\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I like to try and encourage young people to think about is that, especially in this day and age of technological advance where the world is smaller because of the internet, and cell phones, and free long distance, you have so much opportunity to make a difference and to leave a mark.\u00a0 I think that this generation of young people could be the next great generation if they would just see the opportunity that they have to affect the world for Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want you both to comment on this because you\u2019re kind of standing on my soapbox here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, sorry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, I really believe we are under-challenging this next generation, spiritually speaking, to make an impact on their world.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t begin 20 years from today\u2014it begins in elementary school, and junior high, and high school.\u00a0 Then, as you move toward independence day, it\u2019s a natural outflow so that they think about making an impact at work, or in service, or at college.\u00a0 Wherever they go, they have that DNA of spiritual multiplication, of being about the King of Kings\u2019 business, and not just living for self.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And not waiting to do that until you\u2019re graduated from college or until you\u2019re at some landmark.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or until you make enough money so you can be independently-wealthy so you can serve God; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; to give a teenager the idea that, \u201cYou\u2019re involved in Kingdom work right now,\u201d and, \u201cYou can have significant impact for the Kingdom right now.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to wait until you have a degree to do that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 This goes back to the launching of the arrow.\u00a0 I picture so many parents today running as fast as they can, holding the shaft of the arrow, trying to run with it and be the flight.\u00a0 So few parents are really launching their children with velocity, and trusting God to use them, and afraid that the winds of the Holy Spirit\u2014to use this picture\u2014will direct them in a dangerous path.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019ll let you go on a mission trip to Panama City, Florida; but I won\u2019t let you go to Mexico,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019ll let you go to Mexico, but I won\u2019t let you go to Yemen.\u201d\u00a0 We feel like, \u201cThese are our kids.\u00a0 These are our possessions.\u00a0 We are going to protect them,\u201d \u2014but they\u2019re really God\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to tell you\u2014when our daughter, Amy, was about to graduate from college, she called and she said, \u201cI really think I know what\u2019s next for me.\u201d\u00a0 We said, \u201cWhat is that?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWell, there\u2019s this organization, ELIC, the English Language Institute of China.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cThey\u2019re looking for teachers to teach; but\u201d she said, \u201cwhere I really want to teach is not China, but Vietnam.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I remember her calling and saying, \u201cI\u2019ve been accepted.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to send me to Vietnam, me and another teacher.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cAs far as we know, we\u2019ll be the only two Christians in this town of 250,000 people.\u201d\u00a0 I remember thinking, \u201cSomebody else\u2019s kid can go do that; right?\u00a0 I mean, you should go somewhere where there\u2019s a nice church that you can be a part of and all of that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had just been to see the movie, <em>Gods and Generals<\/em>, when it came out, about Stonewall Jackson.\u00a0 The quote, that\u2019s apparently authentic with Stonewall Jackson\u2014that was in the movie\u2014that I\u2019d never heard before\u2014bullets flying past him on the battlefield.\u00a0 Somebody asked him, \u201cHow do you keep your composure when there are bullets flying past you?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cMy theology teaches me that I am as safe on the battlefield as I am in my bedroom if I\u2019m in the will of God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had to come away from that and say, \u201cMy daughter is as safe in Vietnam as she is at home in Little Rock if she\u2019s in the will of God.\u201d\u00a0 She can get killed in a car wreck in Little Rock.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you say, \u201c\u2014the will of Bob?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what I was thinking; yes, but it\u2019s not what I said.\u00a0 That was a paradigm shift.\u00a0 I remember Mary Ann and me both having to go, \u201cDo we really believe God\u2019s in control?\u00a0 She\u2019s His more than she\u2019s ours.\u00a0 Let go, \u2014\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014 \u201claunch.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not easy, but it\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m just thinking about independence day.\u00a0 We call it a day because it does occur at a point in time, but Deuteronomy 6 talks about teaching your children all the way up to the point of that day\u2014when you rise up, when you walk by the way, you put them as frontals on your forehead and on the gateposts.\u00a0 It\u2019s to be a lifestyle of teaching and making an impact on our children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of our listeners remember me sharing this verse because I read this at each of our children\u2019s independence day\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re not going to read this.\u00a0 This is going to make me cry again, just because I\u2019ve read this to my kids, too.\u00a0 It [deep sigh] \u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is the verse to read as you\u2019re pulling the bow back, with the arrow hooked up there; and you\u2019re going to launch it to college, to service, whatever it\u2019s going to be because this really summarizes what it\u2019s all about.\u00a0 Philippians, Chapter 2, verse 12, \u201cTherefore, my beloved,\u201d \u2014and I always cried my way through this.\u00a0 This was really tough.\u00a0 \u201cTherefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed,\u201d \u2014well, maybe not always, but\u2014 \u201cas you have always obeyed, so now, not only in my presence, but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling for it is God who works in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure.\u00a0 Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the times I read this passage, I was sitting on the back of a pickup truck.\u00a0 We were watching fraternity brothers carry kegs into the fraternity house, as I was about to launch the arrow to go into that house.\u00a0 Here\u2019s where the rest of the passage is the payoff.\u00a0 \u201cDo all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God, without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the Word of Life, so that in the day of Christ, I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that point, I changed it and I said, \u201c...so that in that day your mom and I may be proud that we did not run in vain or labor in vain.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you guys know\u2014you have a daughter\u2014parenting is hard work; but if you really follow the playbook of Scripture and are modeling all these things we\u2019ve talked about\u2014how to fail, how to confess sin, how to pass on the life of Christ to your kids, how to give them a mission, how to think about their lives and making an impact, independence day can be the beginning of something truly great in your son or daughter\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThank you, guys, for writing this book.\u00a0 This is going to be a fun book for, not only moms and dads to give their son or daughter as they go to college, or work, or service, but also some aunts and uncles and grandparents who are looking\u2014they are looking for just one more brick in the cathedral that they are building in that child\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is a book that a young person can read through easily, quickly.\u00a0 These issues of freedom, and temptation, and opportunity\u2014these are issues that a student ought to think about before they take the next step.\u00a0 Some of us have already deposited our sons and daughters on the college campus because flight, and afraid that the winds of the Holy Spirit\u2014to use this picture\u2014will direct them in a dangerous path.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ll let you go on a mission trip to Panama City, Florida; but I won\u2019t let you go to Mexico,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019ll let you go to Mexico, but I won\u2019t let you go to Yemen.\u201d\u00a0 We feel like, \u201cThese are our kids.\u00a0 These are our Thanks for joining us.\u00a0\u00a0 You know, when you think about the years, right after high school\u2014whether it\u2019s in the military service, or at college, or in the workplace\u2014those years when young people unplug from the home structure and start to spread their wings, which is\u2014it\u2019s the right and appropriate thing to do; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 It has to happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But when that happens, it seems like there are all kinds of new, fresh temptations, that weren\u2019t there before, that are there now.\u00a0 For example, when I went off to college, there was a place that was about five blocks from campus called The Tap Room.\u00a0 It seems like that was a popular place for a number of students to go, even students who did not\u2014it had nothing to do with tap dancing, alright?\u00a0 And it was not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Tapping sound effects]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t tapping?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was not tapping on the door, no.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Lots of students went there and even students who did not have a driver\u2019s license that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to picture you in The Tap Room.\u00a0 [Laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014made it possible to get alcoholic beverages.\u00a0 They could go with somebody who did have that driver\u2019s license and apparently that guy could buy two.\u00a0 At least, this is what I heard.\u00a0 I can\u2019t give any personal testimony to this.\u00a0 But when I was in high school, there was no Tap Room five blocks away from where I lived.\u00a0 When I was in college, it was right around the corner.\u00a0 That\u2019s where people went and they had fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And there was no freedom, had there been one, because you were living under the authority\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I had ways.\u00a0 I had ways!\u00a0 [Laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we all know that you more than likely\u2014you likely did, but we are talking about the whole concept of independence day, when our sons and daughters are launched into life, whether that be college, to service, to work, perhaps maybe leaving home to get married\u2014but they need coaching and they need a good send-off.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFortunately, our friends, Michael and Hayley DiMarco, have helped us out by writing a book called <em>Independence Day<\/em>, which is designed to be given\u2014right, Michael \u2014 to your son or daughter?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Well, not my son or daughter because I only have a daughter; and she\u2019s seven.\u00a0 Actually, not just to sons or daughters\u2014but, also, the cool thing about this book, that I think is really unique\u2014is it\u2019s definitely rooted in Scripture, but I used a really slow kind of reveal towards the spiritual in this\u2014so it works for even a gift for a non-Christian friend that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A young man or woman that hasn\u2019t been in church can still benefit from this book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Yes, and hopefully eternally, by the time they get to the end.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You guys have written a number of books for youth over the years and have been very successful in that.\u00a0 I found it interesting in the book, Michael, that you told a story about graduation night\u2014after you\u2019d graduated and you were dancing with this babe who whispers something in your ear.\u00a0 She confesses something to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I was clueless, which is evidently in my DNA because it wasn\u2019t something I outgrew.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hasn\u2019t gone away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, but I was clueless about girls.\u00a0 Yes, a girl cheerleader asked me to dance, like the last slow dance of the night.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI\u2019ve had the biggest crush on you.\u00a0 Why did you never ask me out?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re both graduating seniors.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cUh-h-h.\u201d\u00a0 My answer was, \u201cBecause I\u2019m stupid!\u201d\u00a0 At least, I was as self-aware then as I am now.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Then, I had some lame response of, \u201cWell, maybe we can get together this summer;\u201d but she was moving off out of state, like within the next week\u2014and pfft, it was gone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley:<\/strong>\u00a0 As quick as it came.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you run into this young lady, years later, at a reunion\u2014a high school reunion?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, decades, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 She, at the time\u2014back up a little bit\u2014when I was a senior in high school, I had thought I was going to be a police officer.\u00a0 I was starting to serve in the police reserves in my local police department.\u00a0 I wanted to get married at a young age because my father and mother had me late in life.\u00a0 My father was retired and had gray hair at my graduation.\u00a0 They said, \u201cOh, your grandpa came to graduation.\u201d\u00a0 So, I really wanted this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFast forward to the class reunion\u2014she\u2019s married, has a bunch of kids, married a police officer.\u00a0 It just\u2014[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It could have been your life; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 In my high-school mind, that was my dream life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting that you share that story in the book, especially as you look around the theme of temptation, which is one of the things that young people are facing as they face independence day.\u00a0 Girls are not just whispering in guys\u2019 ears today, \u201cI have a crush on you.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019re whispering a lot more than that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 And they\u2019re not whispering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, here, about launching my son\u2014my smart, good-looking young man\u2014off to college and going, \u201cWhat\u2019s he going to do if that happens\u2014when that happens?\u00a0 What would I have done if that had happened?\u201d\u00a0 Those are hard circumstances that are facing young men and women as they head toward independence day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 I say in the book that there are three truths about temptation:\u00a0 everyone\u2019s tempted, everyone falls, but not everyone falls as far.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, in preparing for our independence days in life, especially the <em>big one<\/em> of high school or college graduation, it\u2019s important to realize that temptation has a purpose.\u00a0 There\u2019s actually an upside to temptation as well as the huge downside.\u00a0 The upside to temptation is that temptation is good because it reveals where we can be weakest.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, I am not tempted to overindulge in tap dancing, like you were as a college\u2014[Laughter] \u2014I\u2019m not tempted by alcohol, either.\u00a0 I\u2019m just not; but in the area of like donuts, that\u2019s a bigger temptation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a different deal; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 So I know that I need more self-control there.\u00a0 I know I need to be more mindful in those areas.\u00a0 Temptation does have an upside in that, when we\u2019re tempted, it\u2019s a yellow to red flag that says, \u201cThis is an area of my life that I need God in.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting\u2014the Bible speaks about temptation from Genesis to Revelation.\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget this\u2014and it was back in a time, not when I got my independence day \u2014but Barbara and I had been married about 20 years.\u00a0 There were some things occurring in her life and in our life, as a couple, that I was dealing with.\u00a0 It was a time when there were temptations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI listened to a series of broadcasts, as I jogged, by Charles Stanley.\u00a0 It was 20 cassette tapes.\u00a0 I had no idea the Bible had that much to say about temptation.\u00a0 I have to say that listening to that teaching was really instructive to me\u2014not only as a man, as a husband, and a father who wanted to instruct his own children\u2014but it really formed a core to say, \u201cWe\u2019ve got to equip the next generation to know how to handle this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHayley, what I\u2019d ask you\u2014you\u2019ve got a seven-year-old daughter.\u00a0 How do you want to help her?\u00a0 What do you want to equip her to do when it comes to temptation because she will be free, and she will experience temptation, and opportunity?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 Well, I think there are a lot of temptations that are gradual\u2014which, donuts might be a good example\u2014where we start to indulge in something because of the way it makes us feel.\u00a0 It\u2019s not too bad because it\u2019s just one donut.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And a donut is not sinful.\u00a0 I mean, you\u2019re not\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 No, it\u2019s not sinful, a donut; right?\u00a0 No; but as you start to want to indulge, and you start thinking about donuts more often, and you start wanting them regularly, to the point where they start to consume you\u2014you see where, then, you have this temptation of\u2014well, for my analogy, we\u2019re talking about this gluttony of donuts.\u00a0 If I can instill in her the concept of idolatry\u2014of, \u201cWhere do you place your worship?\u201d\u00a0 In the beginning, it\u2019s not sin, like you said; but as we start to worship it more, it becomes a sin.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s the problem for a lot of young people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think you\u2019ve hit on something that\u2019s very important with teenagers because we can have a tendency to want to impose moral structure around a young person and get them thinking that their spiritual life is that moral behavior\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014rather than having them understand the heart issues\u2014because, back to donuts, a donut is not a sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The sin issue for you, Michael, is gluttony or being controlled by this obsession that you got to\u2014it\u2019s hot, and it\u2019s ready, and so it becomes controlling behavior.\u00a0 This is where I really think we have to help teenagers see it\u2019s not the donut\u2014it\u2019s the heart that\u2019s the issue\u2014so that they understand that the relationship with God is not about how I\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hayley:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rules.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014how I check off the rules.\u00a0 It\u2019s about how I relate to God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 When I was in high school, I had a shop teacher.\u00a0 At the very beginning of shop class\u2014the first shop class that you\u2019d ever take with him\u2014he would talk about safety around the band saw and the table saw.\u00a0 He would talk, and he would do this demonstration, with four fingers, because that\u2019s all he had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you noticed that he only had four fingers, and he\u2019s talking about safety around a table saw and a band saw\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You pay attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014you paid more attention.\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of how I wrote this book, as a four-fingered author.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I\u2019m so open about this.\u00a0 I try to talk about the three areas where most temptations come from\u2014those three areas being appetite, which we\u2019ve already covered with donuts\u2014but it also has to do with stuff that you buy and relationships and love.\u00a0 Also, beyond appetite, there\u2019s affirmation\u2014people-pleasing, doing things to be part of the crowd, peer pressure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then the third is ambition\u2014doing whatever it takes\u2014sacrificing your morals, your faith, for achievement.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I draw that parallel in towards the end, with the story of Jesus going out to the wilderness in Matthew 4\u2014those three temptations\u2014and try to draw that parallel so we can reverse-engineer for students how temptation happens and use different examples from each three. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve talked about freedom.\u00a0 We\u2019ve talked about temptation and equipping your son or daughter to handle that.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t talked as much about opportunity.\u00a0 What\u2019s at the core of opportunity, as you launch that child toward independence?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the coolest things about independence day \u2014about high school graduation, especially\u2014is we can all look back on that time.\u00a0 If you give anyone that tempting thought, \u201cIf you could go back to any point in your life and start over, where would you start?\u201d most people go to high school because of all of the opportunities, all of the bad choices that they made, all of the missed opportunities all started <em>after<\/em> that.\u00a0 It\u2019s the most opportunity-rich moment in any young person\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I like to try and encourage young people to think about is that, especially in this day and age of technological advance where the world is smaller because of the internet, and cell phones, and free long distance, you have so much opportunity to make a difference and to leave a mark.\u00a0 I think that this generation of young people could be the next great generation if they would just see the opportunity that they have to affect the world for Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want you both to comment on this because you\u2019re kind of standing on my soapbox here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, sorry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, I really believe we are under-challenging this next generation, spiritually speaking, to make an impact on their world.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t begin 20 years from today\u2014it begins in elementary school, and junior high, and high school.\u00a0 Then, as you move toward independence day, it\u2019s a natural outflow so that they think about making an impact at work, or in service, or at college.\u00a0 Wherever they go, they have that DNA of spiritual multiplication, of being about the King of Kings\u2019 business, and not just living for self.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And not waiting to do that until you\u2019re graduated from college or until you\u2019re at some landmark.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or until you make enough money so you can be independently-wealthy so you can serve God; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; to give a teenager the idea that, \u201cYou\u2019re involved in Kingdom work right now,\u201d and, \u201cYou can have significant impact for the Kingdom right now.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to wait until you have a degree to do that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 This goes back to the launching of the arrow.\u00a0 I picture so many parents today running as fast as they can, holding the shaft of the arrow, trying to run with it and be the flight.\u00a0 So few parents are really launching their children with velocity, and trusting God to use them, and afraid that the winds of the Holy Spirit\u2014to use this picture\u2014will direct them in a dangerous path.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019ll let you go on a mission trip to Panama City, Florida; but I won\u2019t let you go to Mexico,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019ll let you go to Mexico, but I won\u2019t let you go to Yemen.\u201d\u00a0 We feel like, \u201cThese are our kids.\u00a0 These are our possessions.\u00a0 We are going to protect them,\u201d \u2014but they\u2019re really God\u2019s. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to tell you\u2014when our daughter, Amy, was about to graduate from college, she called and she said, \u201cI really think I know what\u2019s next for me.\u201d\u00a0 We said, \u201cWhat is that?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWell, there\u2019s this organization, ELIC, the English Language Institute of China.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cThey\u2019re looking for teachers to teach; but\u201d she said, \u201cwhere I really want to teach is not China, but Vietnam.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I remember her calling and saying, \u201cI\u2019ve been accepted.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to send me to Vietnam, me and another teacher.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cAs far as we know, we\u2019ll be the only two Christians in this town of 250,000 people.\u201d\u00a0 I remember thinking, \u201cSomebody else\u2019s kid can go do that; right?\u00a0 I mean, you should go somewhere where there\u2019s a nice church that you can be a part of and all of that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had just been to see the movie, <em>Gods and Generals<\/em>, when it came out, about Stonewall Jackson.\u00a0 The quote, that\u2019s apparently authentic with Stonewall Jackson\u2014that was in the movie\u2014that I\u2019d never heard before\u2014bullets flying past him on the battlefield.\u00a0 Somebody asked him, \u201cHow do you keep your composure when there are bullets flying past you?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cMy theology teaches me that I am as safe on the battlefield as I am in my bedroom if I\u2019m in the will of God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had to come away from that and say, \u201cMy daughter is as safe in Vietnam as she is at home in Little Rock if she\u2019s in the will of God.\u201d\u00a0 She can get killed in a car wreck in Little Rock.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you say, \u201c\u2014the will of Bob?\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what I was thinking; yes, but it\u2019s not what I said.\u00a0 That was a paradigm shift.\u00a0 I remember Mary Ann and me both having to go, \u201cDo we really believe God\u2019s in control?\u00a0 She\u2019s His more than she\u2019s ours.\u00a0 Let go, \u2014\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014 \u201claunch.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not easy, but it\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m just thinking about independence day.\u00a0 We call it a day because it does occur at a point in time, but Deuteronomy 6 talks about teaching your children all the way up to the point of that day\u2014when you rise up, when you walk by the way, you put them as frontals on your forehead and on the gateposts.\u00a0 It\u2019s to be a lifestyle of teaching and making an impact on our children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of our listeners remember me sharing this verse because I read this at each of our children\u2019s independence day\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re not going to read this.\u00a0 This is going to make me cry again, just because I\u2019ve read this to my kids, too.\u00a0 It [deep sigh] \u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is the verse to read as you\u2019re pulling the bow back, with the arrow hooked up there; and you\u2019re going to launch it to college, to service, whatever it\u2019s going to be because this really summarizes what it\u2019s all about.\u00a0 Philippians, Chapter 2, verse 12, \u201cTherefore, my beloved,\u201d \u2014and I always cried my way through this.\u00a0 This was really tough.\u00a0 \u201cTherefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed,\u201d \u2014well, maybe not always, but\u2014 \u201cas you have always obeyed, so now, not only in my presence, but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling for it is God who works in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure.\u00a0 Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the times I read this passage, I was sitting on the back of a pickup truck.\u00a0 We were watching fraternity brothers carry kegs into the fraternity house, as I was about to launch the arrow to go into that house.\u00a0 Here\u2019s where the rest of the passage is the payoff.\u00a0 \u201cDo all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God, without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the Word of Life, so that in the day of Christ, I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that point, I changed it and I said, \u201c...so that in that day your mom and I may be proud that we did not run in vain or labor in vain.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you guys know\u2014you have a daughter\u2014parenting is hard work; but if you really follow the playbook of Scripture and are modeling all these things we\u2019ve talked about\u2014how to fail, how to confess sin, how to pass on the life of Christ to your kids, how to give them a mission, how to think about their lives and making an impact, independence day can be the beginning of something truly great in your son or daughter\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThank you, guys, for writing this book.\u00a0 This is going to be a fun book for, not only moms and dads to give their son or daughter as they go to college, or work, or service, but also some aunts and uncles and grandparents who are looking\u2014they are looking for just one more brick in the cathedral that they are building in that child\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is a book that a young person can read through easily, quickly.\u00a0 These issues of freedom, and temptation, and
