they have no direction.\u00a0 Where did I come up with the term \u201canchor man\u201d?\u00a0 Every family needs a man, somewhere in their family chain, who is anchored on Jesus Christ.\u00a0 When a guy gets anchored on Christ, you stop the drifting in a family\u2014even if it\u2019s been there for ten generations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, July 23<sup>rd<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 As a husband and as a dad, how can you make sure your family is anchored in Christ?\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about that today.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition.\u00a0 That\u2019s a question we\u2019re going to try and wrestle with this week:\u00a0 What can we do as husbands and dads to try to anchor our children firmly in a relationship with Christ that extends for multiple generations?\u00a0 I mean, if someone can help us with that, I think all of us are ready to listen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think of what the Bible says in Third John, verse 4, when it says, \u201cI have no greater joy than this, to know that my children are walking in the truth.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, Proverbs 27:17 says, \u201cIron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.\u201d\u00a0 I can almost hear the grinder starting up [Laughter] right now because we\u2019ve got a guest on the broadcast today\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There it is!\u00a0 There it is!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hear it?\u00a0 There\u2019s the grinder.\u00a0 There\u2019s going to be a little grinding taking place\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A little iron sharpening happening.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, before I introduce our guest on the broadcast, Steve Farrar, I want to tell a story.\u00a0 It happened back at Promise Keepers<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> in Houston, where I spoke.\u00a0 They do television interviews afterwards.\u00a0 A TV camera was stuck in my face from CBS.\u00a0 They said, \u201cOutside, there are women who are picketing this event, here at the Astrodome.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[There were] 40,000 men inside\u2014a dozen women or so\u2014maybe 30\u2014outside, who were really ragging on Promise Keepers about their stand about men and taking advantage of women.\u00a0 I just looked them in the eye\u2014or looked that glass camera in the eye\u2014and said, \u201cYou know, it baffles me how any woman could criticize an organization that is calling men to be responsible men.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cUp front, just to the left of where I spoke, were seated more than 30 prisoners, dressed in white, who were given the day off so that they could come to Promise Keepers and experience this time of worship and praise.\u00a0 If you went up and interviewed them, you would find that most of those men are incarcerated\u2014they\u2019re in prison\u2014because most of them never had a daddy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cThey didn\u2019t have a man in their lives that could shape their character; love them, hug them, weep with them.\u00a0 In fact, many of them never saw their father\u2014never met their father\u2014and that\u2019s why they ended up in jail.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cIt baffles me why you would criticize an organization that is calling men back to their primary responsibility to serve, and love their wives, and to spiritually shepherd the next generation of young people.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, that\u2019s the passion that our guest on the broadcast today, Steve Farrar, has.\u00a0 Steve, welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks, Dennis.\u00a0 It\u2019s great to be with you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Steve and his wife Mary, for a number of years, served on our FamilyLife marriage conference speaker team\u2014Bob, way back there before the earth\u2019s crust hardened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen the pictures of that young Steve and Mary and that young Dennis and Barbara.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know\u2014he really hasn\u2019t changed.\u00a0 I have, but Steve hasn\u2019t changed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, only 40 pounds!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Many of our listeners know Steve from his best-selling book, <em>Point Man:<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>How a Man Can Lead His Family<\/em>, which he authored back in 1990.\u00a0 Steve, I can\u2019t believe that book has been out that long.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And yet, it still is a great book for men to know how to lead their family and how to do it practically.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, Dennis, we\u2019re sitting here in Little Rock.\u00a0 I remember writing that book, upstairs in my bedroom, about two miles from here.\u00a0 I think half of that stuff is your material I borrowed.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Steve is the founder and chairman of Men\u2019s Leadership Ministries, which is based in College Station, Texas.\u00a0 Tell us just a little bit about that ministry, Steve.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it really came out of writing the book, <em>Point Man<\/em> because back in 1990, Dennis, I started getting calls.\u00a0 In fact, the first year <em>Point Man <\/em>was out, I got\u2014I didn\u2019t count them, but\u2014somewhere between 300-400 calls.\u00a0 \u201cHey, could you come and talk to our men about being spiritual leaders of their families?\u201d\u00a0 So, really, that\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do\u2014is just to try and give them a model and let them know that this is doable stuff.\u00a0 It\u2019s all in the Scripture.\u00a0 That\u2019s really the heartbeat of what we\u2019re trying to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are a lot of our listeners who are men, but more than 50 percent of our listeners are women.\u00a0 I know it\u2019s on the minds of a lot of our women listeners:\u00a0 \u201cIs there hope today for men?\u00a0 Is all this work of the men\u2019s movement truly a work of God and is their really a reformation occurring in men today?\u00a0 Is there hope for women that men will finally come home, and love them, and lead them?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, Dennis, there has to be hope, I think, because this whole thing\u2014it comes from God.\u00a0 It took a lot of us by surprise.\u00a0 I think God always has His men.\u00a0 I think he\u2019s always got a remnant; and I think it\u2019s stronger than it was ten years ago.\u00a0 Man, I\u2019m encouraged!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve written a book called <em>Anchor Man<\/em>.\u00a0 In this book, Steve, you outline some of those changes that are occurring in men.\u00a0 You outline those changes around the Ten Commandments.\u00a0 Bob, I enjoyed reading this because I think it reminds us that there is change occurring in the hearts of men, especially when they\u2019re confronted with the truth of Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, Dennis, I think that the Ten Commandments really were the benchmark of the Old Testament.\u00a0 What occurred to me one day, as I was thinking about the changes in some of the guys I was talking to\u2014here\u2019s what I was seeing.\u00a0 I began to realize, \u201cI am running into men, all over the country, who will have no other gods before them.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m running into guys who will not make graven images\u2014whether it\u2019s a car or something on their wrist.\u00a0 They\u2019re done with idolatry.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul, and mind.\u00a0 I\u2019m running into men who will not take His name in vain.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m running into a lot of guys who are motivated at work; but not so motivated that they won\u2019t take one day off, at least, because He\u2019s commanded that we do that.\u00a0 I\u2019m running into men who honor their fathers and their mothers\u2014are helping to take care of them as they reach retirement age.\u00a0 I\u2019m running into men who will not have anything to do with murder, whether it\u2019s literal murder or the assassination of somebody\u2019s character behind their back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or whether it\u2019s encouraging a girlfriend or a spouse to take the life of an unborn child.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go.\u00a0 Do you guys talk about abortion on this program?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We don\u2019t shy away from it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know you do\u2014that\u2019s one reason why I\u2019m on here.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the great, great sins of this nation; but God\u2019s men know that\u2019s wrong.\u00a0\u00a0 God has never, never supported the taking of human life.\u00a0 In the Old Testament, the Canaanites\u2014they were known for sacrificing children.\u00a0 There\u2019s a whole movement of men who stand against that and put themselves on the line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Real men protect human life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, they do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They are protectors of life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Let me say something to you gals because some of you have boys.\u00a0 Little boys are so different.\u00a0 Don\u2019t instill in your boys a fear of getting hurt because you can overdo that, as a mom.\u00a0 God wants boys raised so that they won\u2019t be afraid of getting hurt because they are to be sacrificial.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m not saying to let them do things that are crazy or jump off a 40-foot oak tree.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I\u2019m saying that you have to be careful because that young boy needs to grow up to be a sacrificial husband, and a sacrificial father, and a sacrificial leader.\u00a0 If he\u2019s not willing to get hurt, he cannot be the man that God wants him to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He can\u2019t be the protector.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 He can\u2019t be the protector.\u00a0 That\u2019s what protectors do.\u00a0 Protectors are willing to get hurt for the people that they love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Preach it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love this one\u2014I\u2019m running into guys who will not commit adultery.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even though everyone around them is saying it\u2019s okay.\u00a0 Dennis, have you noticed that peer pressure didn\u2019t quit when we got out of high school?\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s everywhere\u2014the guys who say, \u201cNo, I\u2019m not going to do that.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to touch pornography because I\u2019ve made a commitment.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to be a one-woman kind of man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m running into guys who won\u2019t steal time; they won\u2019t steal things; they won\u2019t steal taxes; they won\u2019t steal possessions.\u00a0 God\u2019s behind that!\u00a0 I\u2019m running into men, all over the country, who won\u2019t bear false witness.\u00a0 They tell the truth.\u00a0 They don\u2019t spin the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re not defining \u201cis\u201d.\u00a0 They are just telling the truth.\u00a0 Mark Twain said, \u201cIf you tell the truth, you don\u2019t have to remember anything.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m also running into men who will not covet but who are learning to be content and thankful\u2014and not be men who complain\u2014but be overwhelmed with the blessing that God has given them in their lives on a daily basis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Those are men who are being transformed by the Gospel.\u00a0 That\u2019s what the work of the Gospel is; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 You know, Romans 12:1-2 talks about not being conformed to the world.\u00a0 It\u2019s almost like, at every point, Steve, you were contrasting the way a worldly man thinks and behaves with the godly man and the right, wise choices that he makes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 It\u2019s Psalm 1.\u00a0 Psalm 1 talks about the godly man, \u201cHow blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly.\u201d\u00a0 Then it gives about four or five descriptions.\u00a0 The next line says, \u201cThe wicked are not so.\u201d\u00a0 Everything that is true of the godly man\u2014the opposite is true of the man who isn\u2019t.\u00a0 You know, I think that\u2019s part of what God is doing, Dennis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I remember the first time I saw, on the cover of your book, that statement\u2014that \u201cA man can anchor his family in Christ for the next 100 years.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I thought, \u201cFor real?\u201d\u00a0 I mean, what are you talking about with this whole concept of being an anchor man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the anchor man came out of Deuteronomy 6, which personally, I think it\u2019s the Great Commission of the Old Testament.\u00a0 Deuteronomy was written to the men of Israel.\u00a0 In Deuteronomy 6, he says, \u201c...[These] are the statutes and the judgments, which the Lord your God has commanded me\u201d\u2014now this is Moses talking\u2014\u201cto teach you, that you might do them in the land where you are going over to possess it\u201d \u2014they\u2019re getting ready to go into the Promised Land.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then he says this, \u201c...so that you and your son and your grandson might fear the LORD....\u201d\u00a0 I think most of us think, \u201cMy job is to raise these kids today;\u201d but according to Deuteronomy, I think what we\u2019re seeing there\u2014it\u2019s not just my boys; but it\u2019s their boys.\u00a0 It\u2019s you, and your son, and your grandson.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I got to thinking about was\u2014you know\u2014we all have genealogies.\u00a0 We don\u2019t tend to think of them like this because all of us\u2014we don\u2019t know our genealogy, except for maybe a few previous generations.\u00a0 A genealogy is a chain\u2014it\u2019s a very, very long chain.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was seven, my dad and I toured the <em>U.S.S. Shangri La<\/em>, which was the biggest aircraft carrier in the world, at that time.\u00a0 The flight deck\u2014it was docked at San Diego Bay\u2014the flight deck was 4 \u00bd acres\u20146,000 men.\u00a0 We pulled up alongside that gigantic ship.\u00a0 A huge chain was coming out the side.\u00a0 Later, I did research on what it takes to anchor an aircraft carrier. That chain is longer than 4 \u00bd football fields.\u00a0 The chain, by itself, weighs over 675,000 pounds.\u00a0 At the end of that chain is an anchor that weighs 60,000 pounds\u2014and there are two of them!\u00a0 A genealogy is a family chain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have, in America, what I call \u201cdrifting families\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 Why do they anchor that aircraft carrier in San Diego Bay?\u00a0 They don\u2019t want it drifting.\u00a0 Drifting aircraft carriers do a lot of damage.\u00a0 Drifting families do all kinds of damage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Drifting families have no leadership; they have no direction.\u00a0 Where did I come up with the term \u201canchor man\u201d?\u00a0 Every family needs a man, somewhere in their family chain, who is anchored on Jesus Christ.\u00a0 When a guy gets anchored on Christ, you stop the drifting in a family\u2014even if it\u2019s been there for ten generations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve got to read something from your book, at this point, that you said.\u00a0 You said, \u201cEvery family chain, in order to survive and raise godly children, must somewhere have <em>a <\/em>man who has a godly vision, not only for his own children, but for the children of the generations to come.\u00a0 The fact of the matter is,\u201d you say, \u201cone man with vision who is anchored in Christ can influence his family and the generations to come for hundreds of years.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, Bob, that really is true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think we underestimate the power of a man today; and I think one of the great ploys\u2014one of the great strategies of the devil is to whisper in a man\u2019s ear, \u201cYou don\u2019t matter!\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter if you make a wrong choice.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter if you divorce her.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter if you commit adultery.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter if you steal.\u201d\u00a0 The reality is that every one of those choices is a link in that chain that Steve\u2019s talking about.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And, Steve, that\u2019s why the Bible says to us that the \u201csins of fathers are visited on the next generation.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it does.\u00a0 We\u2019re all very aware of that; but we tend not to be as aware of Deuteronomy 7, verse 9, that says this, \u201cKnow therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His loving kindness\u201d \u2014now this is what I love\u2014 \u201cto a thousandth generation....\u201d\u00a0 Man, is that compound interest or what?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 And oftentimes, in the conferences we do, I\u2019ll have a guy say, \u201cNow, Steve, wait a minute.\u00a0 You\u2019re telling me I\u2019m supposed to lead my family\u2014anchor my family\u2014for a hundred years?\u201d\u00a0 Well, when you take you, and your son, and your grandson on a timeline, you\u2019ve got a hundred years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t have grandkids.\u00a0 In a hundred years, will I know who those kids are\u2014those grandkids or those great grandkids?\u00a0 No, I probably won\u2019t; but you know what?\u00a0 They should know who I was.\u00a0 They should know who you were\u2014not because we left them a lot of money or because we\u2019re so smart\u2014we\u2019re not; but because of our love for Christ--because we hung in there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 See, I really believe that God wants to bless us so that in a hundred years\u2014we\u2019re not looking to be legends; but, you know what?\u00a0 We need some legends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, we sure do!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 We need some legends, Dennis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, you think of what\u2019s happening today in the press and the media attacking heroes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As a boy, I remember feeding off of my heroes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had some guys\u2014some sports heroes, war heroes, even political heroes\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that anchored me as a young man\u2014but none more powerful than Hook Rainey, my dad.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 His nickname was Hook because he had a real wicked curveball; okay?\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t evil, but the batters thought it was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was a good man and, you know what?\u00a0 I still live off of the legacy of Hook Rainey\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right; that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014who was a man of integrity.\u00a0 If I would have had a father who didn\u2019t have integrity, I don\u2019t know that I could be sitting behind a microphone today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know that I would still be loving and leading my wife because what is a commitment to your wife but that of integrity?\u00a0 It\u2019s making good on a promise.\u00a0 It\u2019s living up to that commitment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I sit here, today, thinking about my five kids and the fact that it\u2019s likely that some of those five kids are going to have kids of their own\u2014my grandchildren\u2014and that may go even beyond to the next generation.\u00a0 I\u2019d love to think that every one of those kids and every one of those grandkids would be walking in the faith, consistently throughout their lifetime.\u00a0 Yet, I\u2019ve heard one person describe what often happens in a family\u2014where you have a first generation that is faithful, a second generation that kind of hitchhikes off the first generation\u2019s Christianity, and the third generation apostatizes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So how do I be an anchor man and not fall into that trap?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Bruce Wilkinson is the guy that I heard come up with that and identify that.\u00a0 As you start reading Scripture, you see that.\u00a0 Our kids go through times\u2014no one has perfect kids.\u00a0 There are no perfect parents.\u00a0 We all go through stuff; we\u2019re all in the same boat; but there are times\u2014we went through a time last year\u2014about a six-month time\u2014with one of my kids.\u00a0 It was their tough time.\u00a0 I was not only praying for them; I was fasting for them.\u00a0 \u201cLord, I don\u2019t have what it takes.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have the wisdom.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what to do here.\u201d\u00a0 I think we have some weapons at our disposal\u2014that if we will utilize the weapons\u2014if we will ask God\u2014 \u201cYou have not because you ask not.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have we ever asked God for our grandchildren to <em>all <\/em>come to Christ?\u00a0 My question is, \u201cHow many people have ever prayed that prayer?\u201d\u00a0 If we were to pray it consistently, my feeling is, as I read Scripture, why would God not honor a request like that\u2014that would bring glory to His name?\u00a0 I believe that.\u00a0 I believe we have a weapon that we\u2019ve allowed to get dusty, and to sit on the shelf, and we haven\u2019t used it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really, what you\u2019re talking about, Steve, is a lack of vision.\u00a0 You\u2019ve reminded us how to do that.\u00a0 It begins with prayer.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to add a couple to that, if I could, because as we pray, I think, secondly, we need to live our lives\u2014and you talk about this in your book\u2014we need to live our lives in light of those three generations\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014so that our model is worth being copied; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right; that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then a third, I think, is to challenge our children to pass on the reality of Christ in their lives to their children\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and then to challenge their children to pass it on to their children.\u00a0 At that point, you have a relay race where the baton is being handed off to generation after generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I\u2019d love to think, just as you talked about it\u2014I\u2019d love to think that two generations from now, my grandchildren and my great-grandchildren would look back and say, \u201cYou\u2019ve heard, haven\u2019t you, about Grandpa Bob?\u201d \u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014or, \u201c...about Great-grandpa Bob?\u201d\u00a0 Not because I want the glory for me, but our families need an anchor\u2014something they point back at and say, \u201cThat\u2019s our legacy!\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s powerful; isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I was sitting here thinking\u2014Dennis, we had a lunch probably 12 or 13 years ago\u2014just chatting.\u00a0 I remember you talking about postage stamps.\u00a0 The issue was that you had stamps in your desk for the ministry; but for a personal letter you\u2019d written or something, \u201cDo you use the postage stamp that the ministry had bought for your personal letter?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was the issue you were dealing with that day, that had come before you.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t use the postage stamp\u2014you went and got your own postage stamp.\u00a0 That\u2019s how you lead a family for a hundred years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHow do I lead a family for a hundred years?\u201d\u00a0 By following Christ with my whole heart <em>today<\/em>.\u00a0 That\u2019s how you do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, every man today wants to know how you do that practically.\u00a0 That\u2019s where a book like <em>Anchor Man <\/em>is so powerful because it fills in the blanks, Bob.\u00a0 It\u2019s one thing to have that vision out on the horizon of three generations; but if a guy is left to kind of scratch his head and think, \u201cWhat does that look like?\u00a0 How do you get there?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSteve, I think, really does a great job in this book of illustrating this through other men\u2019s lives and showing us, biblically, how to get there from here. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know\u2014it\u2019s hard when you\u2019re in the thick of it, as a parent, to think that your children will ever rise up and call you blessed [Laughter] because, right now, they\u2019re just rising up and calling you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s mutiny at our place!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>They\u2019re calling you other things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u2014calling you crazy!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what it is at your house; but it is mutiny at our house, occasionally!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you know, the point is, \u201cYou can do it\u2014\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014if you\u2019re faithful\u2014you persevere as a dad.\u201d\u00a0 Obviously, we can\u2019t ensure the spiritual change in our children\u2019s lives.\u00a0 That\u2019s a work of the Spirit; but we can put the kind of fertilizer around their lives so that when God does a work, they\u2019re ready to grow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSteve does a great job in this book, <em>Anchor Man, <\/em>to help us, as dads, know what that fertilization
