ought to look like\u2014today, with our guest, Judy Rossi.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 If I had come to you two weeks before your wedding and asked you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was cocky\u2014had it nailed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I had asked you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We knew what we were up to, absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the degree of difficulty\u2014scale:\u00a0 one to ten, where one is the easiest, ten\u2019s the hardest.\u00a0 What\u2019s it going to be?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would have probably given us a two or three.\u00a0 We would have said, \u201cYes, this is going to be like falling off a log.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So, if I\u2019d had come to you two years after you got married and said, \u201cSo, how\u2019s that working out for you?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scaled up to about a six or a seven.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014on certain days?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, yes, I pegged it in.\u00a0 Then, ask me how we were doing after we had six kids?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Yes, that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let\u2019s get a new scale.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that just enhanced the degree of difficulty; didn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really did.\u00a0 Well, we have a guest with us who understands marriage and family and, especially, the importance of a woman and her role in the marriage relationship.\u00a0 She has been a Bible teacher of women since back in 1986, and she has put together a Bible study called <em>Enhancing Your Marriage<\/em>.\u00a0 Judy Rossi joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Judy, welcome to the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you for having me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Judy and her husband John have been married for 37 years.\u00a0 They have two married daughters.\u00a0 One of whom is married to a man who served in Iraq as a Green Beret for a number of years\u2014and three grandchildren.\u00a0 She\u2019s put together some Bible studies here that really come out of leading thousands of women through these studies\u2014 well, since 1986.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI guess what I wanted to do was just take you back to your own faith journey and ask you\u2014back to Bob\u2019s question\u2014about how difficult marriage can get after a very few months.\u00a0 Did God use your marriage to ultimately bring you into a relationship with Him?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think He did, without a doubt.\u00a0 There was a time in my marriage when I\u2019m looking at this dear guy He gave me and these two great kids and all, but there was that\u2014have you ever heard of Peggy Lee?\u00a0 She did a song called <em>Is That All There Is?<\/em>\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes; <em>Is That All There Is?<\/em>\u2014yes; sure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and that\u2019s where I was.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cIs that all there is?\u201d\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t figure out why the joy wasn\u2019t there, until two very godly women at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas\u2014 where we got stationed\u2014just sort of took me under their wings and very flat, straight out said, \u201cJudy, you need Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWhy do I need Jesus?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m pretty independent, and I lived my life\u2014although I lived it for my children and pretty much, I thought, I was living it for my husband\u2014I really was living it for me\u2014and to need a Savior, and understanding sin and what that was\u2014it didn\u2019t make a whole lot of sense to me until they explained what an impact sin had on my life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got to tell\u2014you my life was not pristine.\u00a0 There were all kinds of things in my past that, as they began to talk to me, were just popping up into my thought life and saying, \u201cWell, yes, that fits, and that wasn\u2019t very good.\u201d\u00a0 To find out that God loved me so much that He would not just cover it but remove it\u2014because it\u2019s one of those things where if you think something is not going right, do you keep doing the same things longer, harder, faster, louder or do you know something\u2019s got to change?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I began my walk with Christ in 1982.\u00a0 I should have been one of those Christians you lock in a closet for six months because I got this sense of excitement.\u00a0 Nothing\u2014you know, when I received Christ, after they finished talking with me, I didn\u2019t hear bells and whistles.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cOkay\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, now I want to talk to you about that for a second.\u00a0 So, you didn\u2019t feel any need for Christ; then, they began to talk to you about the standard that God requires\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014His holiness, His righteousness; and you became aware of your sin.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes; right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Then, they explained how Jesus Christ came to die on the cross for our sins and offer forgiveness to anyone who will respond in faith in Him and receive the free gift of eternal life.\u00a0 Do you remember the day or the night that you made that commitment?\u00a0 Did it occur at a point?\u00a0 Or was it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 It absolutely occurred at a point.\u00a0 It was\u2014for me, it was November 20, 1982.\u00a0 It was on my real birthday, actually.\u00a0 That makes me smile that God would sort of create a new me on my birthday.\u00a0 I absolutely\u2014I did get that I needed to ask forgiveness for my sins because there were so many.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, when your husband came home and you said, \u201cGuess what happened to me today,\u201d did you have that conversation with him?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just absolutely hit him over the head with my Bible.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 You know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you really?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, not at all!\u00a0 As a matter of fact, it was a little threatening because part of who I was B.C.\u2014before Christ\u2014was a people pleaser.\u00a0 So, the real Judy was never really out there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSeveral months later, when John came to Christ, we started attending a local Bible study\u2014which made it a little easier because I began to see that we\u2019re all in the same boat here.\u00a0 We\u2019re all on this journey and this journey is leading God-ward.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I wanted and to be so blessed to have my husband come to Christ, shortly after I did, was just amazing to me.\u00a0 It began to take shape that way.\u00a0 No, I didn\u2019t hit him over the head with my Bible.\u00a0 I really didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You started teaching women about marriage about four years after you had come to faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s pretty quick\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was\u2014yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to be jumping in and saying, \u201cLook, I\u2019ve got some things that you should learn from the Bible about marriage.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, actually, I think that was more God\u2019s way of drawing me into His retooling in my life with regard to my own marriage.\u00a0 Before I came to Christ, the Bible never really made a whole lot of sense to me the many times I tried to read it; but I can remember coming home from that retreat, where I accepted Christ, and picking up the Bible that Monday morning.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t put it down.\u00a0 I mean, I read, and I read, and I read.\u00a0 I read voraciously.\u00a0 Then, I began to dig deeper and do word searches.\u00a0 Things like this fascinated me.\u00a0 I wanted as much as I could get.\u00a0 So, I learned a lot!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What kinds of things were you learning that were changing you and your relationship with John?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, one of the things that I really needed to know was how much my relationship with Jesus Christ impacted my relationship with my husband.\u00a0 If I think that my relationship with Christ is great and my relationship with my husband is yucky, I\u2019m really going to have to take another look at my relationship with Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere really is, what I call, a 90-degree dynamic.\u00a0\u00a0 What\u2019s going on between me and Jesus ought to be flowing in a horizontal river toward my husband.\u00a0 If there is something broken between Jesus and me, it\u2019s going to be broken between John and me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Give me an illustration of something that might have been broken between you and John that forced you back\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to your relationship with God because, honestly, I think it\u2019s a powerful principle of what you teach; but it really is the message of the Scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 God is calling us into a relationship with Him, and that relationship will flow over to our human relationships.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I would say that, for me, one of the most difficult aspects of my relating to my guy was a respect issue.\u00a0 I was independent.\u00a0 Even after a Christian, there was still that element of independence; and John was a big boy.\u00a0 So, I\u2019d say, \u201cWell, there\u2019s a lot he can do for himself.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019d be being the mom to my kids, or I\u2019d be out being the Christian friend to the gals outside that front door\u2014and didn\u2019t realize that I was really neglecting my guy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was also very disrespectful in many ways to John, as we were in marriage.\u00a0 This was something that came back to bite me on a number of occasions.\u00a0 One of them was when he\u2019d come in off the field.\u00a0 He was in the military at the time.\u00a0 He had spent five weeks in the dust and dirt of Fort Hood and whatever training they were doing at the time.\u00a0 He might even have been off on a--deployed to another training area.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe came back, after a very long time.\u00a0 We had our\u2014he\u2019s coming in the door.\u00a0 We have our great entries and\u00a0 our \u201chellos\u201d, and we had our good time together.\u00a0 Then, I launch.\u00a0 I launch into all the things that went wrong while he was gone and all the things that could have been done differently, had he been here, and, \u201cWhere was he when\u201d\u2014and this and that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe stood there in his big, tall self, just looking at me, with his poker face.\u00a0 When I was done ranting, he looked at me and he said, \u201cYou know, Judy, you are a Christian for everybody else but me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whoa!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That was, without a doubt, the Holy Spirit speaking through my man; and he was right!\u00a0 I was instantly convicted of my neglect, of my disrespect, of my ingratitude, and a lot of the energy that went outside that front door\u2014that wasn\u2019t inside the house.\u00a0 I began to realize that if my walk with Christ isn\u2019t credible, first, to the one with whom God made me one\u2014that would be my husband\u2014then, he\u2019s not credible at all, no matter what I do outside that front door.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How did that moment, where you realized you weren\u2019t respecting your husband but neglecting him, drive you back to the vertical relationship that you have with Jesus Christ?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I knew I needed a huge infusion of Christ in me.\u00a0 I went back to the drawing board in Scripture.\u00a0 I heavily had to depend on the Holy Spirit because it was a huge habit that I needed to break.\u00a0 If the Holy Spirit, in me, is the One who teaches me all truth, brings to my remembrance everything that I need to use as I\u2019m walking through this life and walking through this marriage\u2014if He\u2019s my Comforter, my Counselor, and my Advocate\u2014then, I\u2019m going to get what I need from Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s another great part about that, too.\u00a0 Psalm 139 talks about how God knows every word on my lips before ever one of them exits.\u00a0 That tells me that the Holy Spirit can stop something that comes out of my mouth before it comes out of my mouth.\u00a0 I began to depend on what I knew to be truth and began to use that gift in me\u2014that gift of the Spirit in me to begin to unfold my role as John\u2019s wife.\u00a0 Now, by then, the first study had been completed; but for that entire period of time afterwards\u2014there was seven-year period when I really needed to be retooled.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the issues\u2014John and I had a long-standing issue.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to say what it is because I think, as I talk about it, gals can put their own issue in there.\u00a0 There was an issue in our marriage that was heartache for me.\u00a0 We just didn\u2019t agree.\u00a0 We couldn\u2019t find a comfortable place where the two of us could agree.\u00a0 I can remember, at a point in time, in one of our conversations\u2014I walked away feeling just kind of dead inside and realized that if I didn\u2019t get a lot closer to Christ, this could really separate us more.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, what did you do with it?\u00a0 I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s more like what that issue did with me because what happened was\u2014 over that issue, I became more resentful.\u00a0 Over a period of time, that resentment became hostility; and that hostility settled in almost a depression.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was your hostility toward yourself, toward John, toward God?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was toward John.\u00a0 It was toward John.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you were angry at him?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was angry!\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 That secondary emotion of anger came right up.\u00a0 It began to create in me dissatisfaction with this relationship that I had because I expected more.\u00a0 Before I knew it, I was having panic attacks and really having a difficult time dealing with this relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went through every excuse in the book, \u201cWell, if I only had married at this age\u2014,\u201d or, \u201cIf John was only this way\u2014\u201d or, \u201cIf we just had that\u2014\u201d or pick an excuse rather than say, \u201cJudy, look inside yourself,\u201d or, \u201cWhat responsibility do I have here?\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t do any of that because I just lived my life in anger for a very long time.\u00a0 I just let it get all pent up; and at one point in time, it just sort of imploded in me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What did that look like?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 An emotional meltdown.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In front of John?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, no.\u00a0 He was at the battalion, and we were\u2014I was getting over the flu, and it just\u2014I had just this intense anxiety overwhelmed me.\u00a0 I knew that it was a culmination of all this stuff\u2014to include some other things\u2014and it just consumed me for awhile.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you just broke down crying?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just broke down; right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long did you cry?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Probably for about four months.\u00a0 It was one of those times when the Lord and I had\u2014and John\u2014we had to really come back.\u00a0 Then, I could remember\u2014this was just so God.\u00a0 We were\u2014I had just sent the kids off to school, John off to work, and I go take my place in my chair where I did my devotionals\u2014and yes, I continued to do my devotionals.\u00a0 I continued to do all the right, Christian things while I lived in this anger\u2014which is so wrong.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSitting there, listening to myself talk, in my brain\u2014just going off, \u201cPoor Judy!\u00a0 It could be different\u2014\u201d or\u2014 Just out of the blue, this still, small voice\u2014or for some, it\u2019s impression\u2014in my soul\u2014said, \u201cJudy, are you tired of this yet?\u201d\u00a0 I mean, it might have well been a bull horn.\u00a0 \u201cJudy, are you tired of living like this yet?\u201d\u00a0 It just almost like it sort of slapped me upside the head.\u00a0 I said, \u201cYes, I am.\u00a0 I\u2019m tired of being constantly angry, moody, uncooperative, and disrespectful.\u00a0 I am tired of this.\u00a0 I\u2019m tired of being me\u2014that I know really doesn\u2019t please God.\u201d\u00a0 I mean it was just like a light switch flipped because I knew that was the Holy Spirit saying, \u201cSomething\u2019s got to change here.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s time.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s time!\u201d\u00a0 Yes, \u201cYou\u2019re not representing Me well.\u00a0 You\u2019re out here doing this and taking that Bible study and going through all the motions, but offending Me, all along the way.\u201d\u00a0 He took me to a place of repentance.\u00a0 I had to repent.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to repent of that stuff.\u00a0 I laid it out very clearly, and I was on my face before the Lord.\u00a0 I asked His forgiveness.\u00a0 When I came back up, it was changing.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t suddenly\u2014all of a sudden\u2014not have any more panic attacks or didn\u2019t feel the\u2014but I knew\u2014you know Jesus said in John 8, \u201cYou shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew from that moment on that truth was going to be forging my path.\u00a0 I no longer had to lie to me.\u00a0 All I had to do was take God seriously, and at His Word, and apply it to my life.\u00a0 He would begin to lead that journey for me in a way that would bless my husband, grow me, bless me, as well, and the children, and glorify God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s probably the bottom line in our walk with Christ\u2014is to glorify God.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just Judy, as a woman of God, glorifying God.\u00a0 It\u2019s Judy, as a wife to her husband.\u00a0 It\u2019s Judy, as a mother to her children.\u00a0 It\u2019s Judy, as a mentor to these women that God brings alongside her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 For the truth to set you free,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014we have to surrender.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what I heard\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014took place in your life as you got on your face.\u00a0 You mentioned how Jesus Christ swept into your life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014made you a new creature\u2014made you clean\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that brought the hope and the joy that you\u2019d been looking for.\u00a0 However, what you\u2019ve just taken us into, after that commitment was made, was into a dusty, dirty time, where the Holy Spirit was doing some closet cleaning\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and cleaning out some rooms, and some attitudes, and issues.\u00a0 What I want our listeners to hear, \u201cWe have not contradicted ourselves here.\u201d\u00a0 When Christ comes in and changes a person\u2019s life, He forgives you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He makes you a new creature; but then, you begin, in earnest, what is a big word\u2014it\u2019s talked about by theologians\u2014sanctification.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sanctification.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You start being made just like Jesus Christ.\u00a0 To do that, you\u2019ve got to have the Holy Spirit having access to those closets, and those rooms, and the basement that\u2019s got the stuff that\u2019s stored that has to be cleaned out.\u00a0 In the process, it demands a response, which I heard you say you\u2019ve made\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014toward God and, then, toward John, which brought life, and hope, and joy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014back into the relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking\u2014you had some remodeling done at your house awhile back, and you remember the project.\u00a0 It was long, and messy, and frustrating, and not easy to get to where you wanted the house to be; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We would wake up in the morning with sounds of the workmen; okay?\u00a0 You know, that\u2019s a picture of the Christian life.\u00a0 You start every day with <em>the <\/em>Workman\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s true.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the Holy Spirit who came\u2014as you said\u2014to convict us of sin, to comfort us in that process, to conform us to the image of Christ, to counsel us, to empower us, to give us the ability, not only to love God, but also love an imperfect person that we\u2019re married to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I said to you before we came in the studio, I feel like <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> is a broadcast that is all about teaching the Christian faith and the Christian life to people around the most difficult and most challenging set of relationships on the planet\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014marriage and family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think when there is remodeling that needs to be done in a marriage relationship, you have to start off and ask the question, \u201cWhat needs to be remodeled in my life?\u201d, whether you are a husband or a wife.\u00a0 Rather than trying to center the need for the remodeling project in the other person, you really have to ask, \u201cWhere do the walls need to be knocked out in my own life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell the ladies, \u201cMy marriage was God\u2019s workshop.\u00a0 My sanctification\u2014you know, that big word\u2014everything that needed to be cleaned up was evident in my relationship with my husband.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 We, too\u2014we\u2019ll tell the same thing.\u00a0 It\u2019s a part of God\u2019s tool in all of our lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and I thank God for that period of time because there is no greater evidence of God\u2019s reality in our lives than to look back at a tough time and say, \u201cBoy, I really wouldn\u2019t want to go back and do that again; but oh, the blessing that came from it.\u201d\u00a0 When I look back on that period of time\u2014that season in our marriage that was difficult\u2014I can see how that just opened up doors for me to even learn more and more and pour more into women\u2019s lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are women in some very tough places today, but they need to know that we serve the God of hope\u2014not a God of hopelessness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re happy with the way the remodeling turned out at your house; aren\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am.\u00a0 I have not forgotten the pain of waking up to the sound of workmen.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was it worth the pain?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was worth the pain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s also been worth the pain in our marriage.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure you\u2019d say the same as well, Bob.\u00a0 I think the message today that Judy is really imploring women\u2014and as far as that goes, we\u2019re imploring men, as well\u2014is that you have to lean into God and keep a teachable spirit\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and learn the lesson well that He\u2019s teaching you right now because if you don\u2019t learn it, the workmen are going to show up again tomorrow morning.\u00a0 You\u2019ll be waking up to the sound of the hammers and the saws.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, Wednesday, July 18<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to explore what being a Christian wife ought to look like\u2014today, with our guest, Judy Rossi.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 If I had come to you two weeks before your wedding and asked you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was cocky\u2014had it nailed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I had asked you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We knew what we were up to, absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the degree of difficulty\u2014scale:\u00a0 one to ten, where one is the easiest, ten\u2019s the hardest.\u00a0 What\u2019s it going to be?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would have probably given us a two or three.\u00a0 We would have said, \u201cYes, this is going to be like falling off a log.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So, if I\u2019d had come to you two years after you got married and said, \u201cSo, how\u2019s that working out for you?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scaled up to about a six or a seven.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014on certain days?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, yes, I pegged it in.\u00a0 Then, ask me how we were doing after we had six kids?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Yes, that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let\u2019s get a new scale.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that just enhanced the degree of difficulty; didn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really did.\u00a0 Well, we have a guest with us who understands marriage and family and, especially, the importance of a woman and her role in the marriage relationship.\u00a0 She has been a Bible teacher of women since back in 1986, and she has put together a Bible study called <em>Enhancing Your Marriage<\/em>.\u00a0 Judy Rossi joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Judy, welcome to the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you for having me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Judy and her husband John have been married for 37 years.\u00a0 They have two married daughters.\u00a0 One of whom is married to a man who served in Iraq as a Green Beret for a number of years\u2014and three grandchildren.\u00a0 She\u2019s put together some Bible studies here that really come out of leading thousands of women through these studies\u2014 well, since 1986.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI guess what I wanted to do was just take you back to your own faith journey and ask you\u2014back to Bob\u2019s question\u2014about how difficult marriage can get after a very few months.\u00a0 Did God use your marriage to ultimately bring you into a relationship with Him?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think He did, without a doubt.\u00a0 There was a time in my marriage when I\u2019m looking at this dear guy He gave me and these two great kids and all, but there was that\u2014have you ever heard of Peggy Lee?\u00a0 She did a song called <em>Is That All There Is?<\/em>\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes; <em>Is That All There Is?<\/em>\u2014yes; sure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and that\u2019s where I was.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cIs that all there is?\u201d\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t figure out why the joy wasn\u2019t there, until two very godly women at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas\u2014 where we got stationed\u2014just sort of took me under their wings and very flat, straight out said, \u201cJudy, you need Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWhy do I need Jesus?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m pretty independent, and I lived my life\u2014although I lived it for my children and pretty much, I thought, I was living it for my husband\u2014I really was living it for me\u2014and to need a Savior, and understanding sin and what that was\u2014it didn\u2019t make a whole lot of sense to me until they explained what an impact sin had on my life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got to tell\u2014you my life was not pristine.\u00a0 There were all kinds of things in my past that, as they began to talk to me, were just popping up into my thought life and saying, \u201cWell, yes, that fits, and that wasn\u2019t very good.\u201d\u00a0 To find out that God loved me so much that He would not just cover it but remove it\u2014because it\u2019s one of those things where if you think something is not going right, do you keep doing the same things longer, harder, faster, louder or do you know something\u2019s got to change?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I began my walk with Christ in 1982.\u00a0 I should have been one of those Christians you lock in a closet for six months because I got this sense of excitement.\u00a0 Nothing\u2014you know, when I received Christ, after they finished talking with me, I didn\u2019t hear bells and whistles.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cOkay\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, now I want to talk to you about that for a second.\u00a0 So, you didn\u2019t feel any need for Christ; then, they began to talk to you about the standard that God requires\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014His holiness, His righteousness; and you became aware of your sin.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes; right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Then, they explained how Jesus Christ came to die on the cross for our sins and offer forgiveness to anyone who will respond in faith in Him and receive the free gift of eternal life.\u00a0 Do you remember the day or the night that you made that commitment?\u00a0 Did it occur at a point?\u00a0 Or was it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 It absolutely occurred at a point.\u00a0 It was\u2014for me, it was November 20, 1982.\u00a0 It was on my real birthday, actually.\u00a0 That makes me smile that God would sort of create a new me on my birthday.\u00a0 I absolutely\u2014I did get that I needed to ask forgiveness for my sins because there were so many.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, when your husband came home and you said, \u201cGuess what happened to me today,\u201d did you have that conversation with him?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just absolutely hit him over the head with my Bible.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 You know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you really?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, not at all!\u00a0 As a matter of fact, it was a little threatening because part of who I was B.C.\u2014before Christ\u2014was a people pleaser.\u00a0 So, the real Judy was never really out there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSeveral months later, when John came to Christ, we started attending a local Bible study\u2014which made it a little easier because I began to see that we\u2019re all in the same boat here.\u00a0 We\u2019re all on this journey and this journey is leading God-ward.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I wanted and to be so blessed to have my husband come to Christ, shortly after I did, was just amazing to me.\u00a0 It began to take shape that way.\u00a0 No, I didn\u2019t hit him over the head with my Bible.\u00a0 I really didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You started teaching women about marriage about four years after you had come to faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s pretty quick\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was\u2014yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to be jumping in and saying, \u201cLook, I\u2019ve got some things that you should learn from the Bible about marriage.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, actually, I think that was more God\u2019s way of drawing me into His retooling in my life with regard to my own marriage.\u00a0 Before I came to Christ, the Bible never really made a whole lot of sense to me the many times I tried to read it; but I can remember coming home from that retreat, where I accepted Christ, and picking up the Bible that Monday morning.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t put it down.\u00a0 I mean, I read, and I read, and I read.\u00a0 I read voraciously.\u00a0 Then, I began to dig deeper and do word searches.\u00a0 Things like this fascinated me.\u00a0 I wanted as much as I could get.\u00a0 So, I learned a lot!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What kinds of things were you learning that were changing you and your relationship with John?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, one of the things that I really needed to know was how much my relationship with Jesus Christ impacted my relationship with my husband.\u00a0 If I think that my relationship with Christ is great and my relationship with my husband is yucky, I\u2019m really going to have to take another look at my relationship with Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere really is, what I call, a 90-degree dynamic.\u00a0\u00a0 What\u2019s going on between me and Jesus ought to be flowing in a horizontal river toward my husband.\u00a0 If there is something broken between Jesus and me, it\u2019s going to be broken between John and me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Give me an illustration of something that might have been broken between you and John that forced you back\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to your relationship with God because, honestly, I think it\u2019s a powerful principle of what you teach; but it really is the message of the Scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 God is calling us into a relationship with Him, and that relationship will flow over to our human relationships.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I would say that, for me, one of the most difficult aspects of my relating to my guy was a respect issue.\u00a0 I was independent.\u00a0 Even after a Christian, there was still that element of independence; and John was a big boy.\u00a0 So, I\u2019d say, \u201cWell, there\u2019s a lot he can do for himself.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019d be being the mom to my kids, or I\u2019d be out being the Christian friend to the gals outside that front door\u2014and didn\u2019t realize that I was really neglecting my guy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was also very disrespectful in many ways to John, as we were in marriage.\u00a0 This was something that came back to bite me on a number of occasions.\u00a0 One of them was when he\u2019d come in off the field.\u00a0 He was in the military at the time.\u00a0 He had spent five weeks in the dust and dirt of Fort Hood and whatever training they were doing at the time.\u00a0 He might even have been off on a--deployed to another training area.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe came back, after a very long time.\u00a0 We had our\u2014he\u2019s coming in the door.\u00a0 We have our great entries and\u00a0 our \u201chellos\u201d, and we had our good time together.\u00a0 Then, I launch.\u00a0 I launch into all the things that went wrong while he was gone and all the things that could have been done differently, had he been here, and, \u201cWhere was he when\u201d\u2014and this and that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe stood there in his big, tall self, just looking at me, with his poker face.\u00a0 When I was done ranting, he looked at me and he said, \u201cYou know, Judy, you are a Christian for everybody else but me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whoa!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That was, without a doubt, the Holy Spirit speaking through my man; and he was right!\u00a0 I was instantly convicted of my neglect, of my disrespect, of my ingratitude, and a lot of the energy that went outside that front door\u2014that wasn\u2019t inside the house.\u00a0 I began to realize that if my walk with Christ isn\u2019t credible, first, to the one with whom God made me one\u2014that would be my husband\u2014then, he\u2019s not credible at all, no matter what I do outside that front door.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How did that moment, where you realized you weren\u2019t respecting your husband but neglecting him, drive you back to the vertical relationship that you have with Jesus Christ?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I knew I needed a huge infusion of Christ in me.\u00a0 I went back to the drawing board in Scripture.\u00a0 I heavily had to depend on the Holy Spirit because it was a huge habit that I needed to break.\u00a0 If the Holy Spirit, in me, is the One who teaches me all truth, brings to my remembrance everything that I need to use as I\u2019m walking through this life and walking through this marriage\u2014if He\u2019s my Comforter, my Counselor, and my Advocate\u2014then, I\u2019m going to get what I need from Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s another great part about that, too.\u00a0 Psalm 139 talks about how God knows every word on my lips before ever one of them exits.\u00a0 That tells me that the Holy Spirit can stop something that comes out of my mouth before it comes out of my mouth.\u00a0 I began to depend on what I knew to be truth and began to use that gift in me\u2014that gift of the Spirit in me to begin to unfold my role as John\u2019s wife.\u00a0 Now, by then, the first study had been completed; but for that entire period of time afterwards\u2014there was seven-year period when I really needed to be retooled.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the issues\u2014John and I had a long-standing issue.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to say what it is because I think, as I talk about it, gals can put their own issue in there.\u00a0 There was an issue in our marriage that was heartache for me.\u00a0 We just didn\u2019t agree.\u00a0 We couldn\u2019t find a comfortable place where the two of us could agree.\u00a0 I can remember, at a point in time, in one of our conversations\u2014I walked away feeling just kind of dead inside and realized that if I didn\u2019t get a lot closer to Christ, this could really separate us more.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, what did you do with it?\u00a0 I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s more like what that issue did with me because what happened was\u2014 over that issue, I became more resentful.\u00a0 Over a period of time, that resentment became hostility; and that hostility settled in almost a depression.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was your hostility toward yourself, toward John, toward God?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was toward John.\u00a0 It was toward John.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you were angry at him?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was angry!\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 That secondary emotion of anger came right up.\u00a0 It began to create in me dissatisfaction with this relationship that I had because I expected more.\u00a0 Before I knew it, I was having panic attacks and really having a difficult time dealing with this relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went through every excuse in the book, \u201cWell, if I only had married at this age\u2014,\u201d or, \u201cIf John was only this way\u2014\u201d or, \u201cIf we just had that\u2014\u201d or pick an excuse rather than say, \u201cJudy, look inside yourself,\u201d or, \u201cWhat responsibility do I have here?\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t do any of that because I just lived my life in anger for a very long time.\u00a0 I just let it get all pent up; and at one point in time, it just sort of imploded in me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What did that look like?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 An emotional meltdown.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In front of John?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, no.\u00a0 He was at the battalion, and we were\u2014I was getting over the flu, and it just\u2014I had just this intense anxiety overwhelmed me.\u00a0 I knew that it was a culmination of all this stuff\u2014to include some other things\u2014and it just consumed me for awhile.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you just broke down crying?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just broke down; right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long did you cry?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Probably for about four months.\u00a0 It was one of those times when the Lord and I had\u2014and John\u2014we had to really come back.\u00a0 Then, I could remember\u2014this was just so God.\u00a0 We were\u2014I had just sent the kids off to school, John off to work, and I go take my place in my chair where I did my devotionals\u2014and yes, I continued to do my devotionals.\u00a0 I continued to do all the right, Christian things while I lived in this anger\u2014which is so wrong.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSitting there, listening to myself talk, in my brain\u2014just going off, \u201cPoor Judy!\u00a0 It could be different\u2014\u201d or\u2014 Just out of the blue, this still, small voice\u2014or for some, it\u2019s impression\u2014in my soul\u2014said, \u201cJudy, are you tired of this yet?\u201d\u00a0 I mean, it might have well been a bull horn.\u00a0 \u201cJudy, are you tired of living like this yet?\u201d\u00a0 It just almost like it sort of slapped me upside the head.\u00a0 I said, \u201cYes, I am.\u00a0 I\u2019m tired of being constantly angry, moody, uncooperative, and disrespectful.\u00a0 I am tired of this.\u00a0 I\u2019m tired of being me\u2014that I know really doesn\u2019t please God.\u201d\u00a0 I mean it was just like a light switch flipped because I knew that was the Holy Spirit saying, \u201cSomething\u2019s got to change here.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s time.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s time!\u201d\u00a0 Yes, \u201cYou\u2019re not representing Me well.\u00a0 You\u2019re out here doing this and taking that Bible study and going through all the motions, but offending Me, all along the way.\u201d\u00a0 He took me to a place of repentance.\u00a0 I had to repent.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to repent of that stuff.\u00a0 I laid it out very clearly, and I was on my face before the Lord.\u00a0 I asked His forgiveness.\u00a0 When I came back up, it was changing.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t suddenly\u2014all of a sudden\u2014not have any more panic attacks or didn\u2019t feel the\u2014but I knew\u2014you know Jesus said in John 8, \u201cYou shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew from that moment on that truth was going to be forging my path.\u00a0 I no longer had to lie to me.\u00a0 All I had to do was take God seriously, and at His Word, and apply it to my life.\u00a0 He would begin to lead that journey for me in a way that would bless my husband, grow me, bless me, as well, and the children, and glorify God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s probably the bottom line in our walk with Christ\u2014is to glorify God.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just Judy, as a woman of God, glorifying God.\u00a0 It\u2019s Judy, as a wife to her husband.\u00a0 It\u2019s Judy, as a mother to her children.\u00a0 It\u2019s Judy, as a mentor to these women that God brings alongside her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 For the truth to set you free,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014we have to surrender.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what I heard\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014took place in your life as you got on your face.\u00a0 You mentioned how Jesus Christ swept into your life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014made you a new creature\u2014made you clean\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that brought the hope and the joy that you\u2019d been looking for.\u00a0 However, what you\u2019ve just taken us into, after that commitment was made, was into a dusty, dirty time, where the Holy Spirit was doing some closet cleaning\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and cleaning out some rooms, and some attitudes, and issues.\u00a0 What I want our listeners to hear, \u201cWe have not contradicted ourselves here.\u201d\u00a0 When Christ comes in and changes a person\u2019s life, He forgives you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He makes you a new creature; but then, you begin, in earnest, what is a big word\u2014it\u2019s talked about by theologians\u2014sanctification.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sanctification.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You start being made just like Jesus Christ.\u00a0 To do that, you\u2019ve got to have the Holy Spirit having access to those closets, and those rooms, and the basement that\u2019s got the stuff that\u2019s stored that has to be cleaned out.\u00a0 In the process, it demands a response, which I heard you say you\u2019ve made\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014toward God and, then, toward John, which brought life, and hope, and joy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014back into the relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking\u2014you had some remodeling done at your house awhile back, and you remember the project.\u00a0 It was long, and messy, and frustrating, and not easy to get to where you wanted the house to be; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We would wake up in the morning with sounds of the workmen; okay?\u00a0 You know, that\u2019s a picture of the Christian life.\u00a0 You start every day with <em>the <\/em>Workman\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s true.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the Holy Spirit who came\u2014as you said\u2014to convict us of sin, to comfort us in that process, to conform us to the image of Christ, to counsel us, to empower us, to give us the ability, not only to love God, but also love an imperfect person that we\u2019re married to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I said to you before we came in the studio, I feel like <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> is a broadcast that is all about teaching the Christian faith and the Christian life to people around the most difficult and most challenging set of relationships on the planet\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014marriage and family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think when there is remodeling that needs to be done in a marriage relationship, you have to start off and ask the question, \u201cWhat needs to be remodeled in my life?\u201d, whether you are a husband or a wife.\u00a0 Rather than trying to center the need for the remodeling project in the other person, you really have to ask, \u201cWhere do the walls need to be knocked out in my own life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell the ladies, \u201cMy marriage was God\u2019s workshop.\u00a0 My sanctification\u2014you know, that big word\u2014everything that needed to be cleaned up was evident in my relationship with my husband.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 We, too\u2014we\u2019ll tell the same thing.\u00a0 It\u2019s a part of God\u2019s tool in all of our lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and I thank God for that period of time because there is no greater evidence of God\u2019s reality in our lives than to look back at a tough time and say, \u201cBoy, I really wouldn\u2019t want to go back and do that again; but oh, the blessing that came from it.\u201d\u00a0 When I look back on that period of time\u2014that season in our marriage that was difficult\u2014I can see how that just opened up doors for me to even learn more and more and pour more into women\u2019s lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are women in some very tough places today, but they need to know that we serve the God of hope\u2014not a God of hopelessness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re happy with the way the remodeling turned out at your house; aren\u2019t you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am.\u00a0 I have not forgotten the pain of waking up to the sound of workmen.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was it worth the pain?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was worth the pain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s also been worth the pain in our marriage.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure you\u2019d say the same as well, Bob.\u00a0 I think the message today that Judy is really imploring women\u2014and as far as that goes, we\u2019re imploring men, as well\u2014is that you have to lean into God and keep a teachable spirit\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Judy:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and learn the lesson well that He\u2019s teaching you right now because if you don\u2019t learn it, the workmen are going to show up again tomorrow morning.\u00a0 You\u2019ll be waking up to the sound of the hammers and the saws.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well,
