story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Folks are coming to us; and they\u2019re, really, a lot of times, on their last legs.\u00a0 We can sit down and pray with them.\u00a0 Of course, they look at us\u2014we\u2019ve got a lanyard around our neck\u2014they think we\u2019re these spiritual giants or whatever.\u00a0 It\u2019s like we start sharing a little bit of our story to give them hope.\u00a0 They look at us and they go, \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 You guys were divorced?\u00a0 Wait, you\u2019ve been through an affair?\u00a0 You were an alcoholic?\u00a0 You were a control freak?\u00a0 Okay, pray with me.\u00a0 Show me how you came through that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 How could we have gotten this hope and not tell other people that, no matter where you are in your marriage, there is hope.\u00a0 You can always stop whatever you are doing, and do it differently.\u00a0 welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 There\u2019s a passage in Scripture where the Bible says, \u201cBehold, God is doing a new thing.\u201d\u00a0 I think I probably know that because of the DC Talk song more than because it came out of the Scripture.\u00a0 I mean, DC Talk\u2019s got a song like that; but anyway, I digress.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>We\u2019re hearing a story about a new thing this week about how God\u2014well, as Scott Jennings described it earlier this week\u2014God didn\u2019t just restore a marriage.\u00a0 He gave a new marriage to a couple that had a badly-damaged marriage\u2014at their own hands.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Scott and Sherry Jennings join us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Welcome back, guys.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you so much.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott and Sherry live in Goldsboro, North Carolina.\u00a0 They are the pastors of Marriage and Family Life.\u00a0 Really, it\u2019s a remarkable story of how\u2014what you just said, Bob\u2014God brought life out of a dead marriage.\u00a0 Now, you are bringing life, as we\u2019re going to hear today, to marriages that need it, as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, the two of you met in college at a keg party.\u00a0 Scott was instantly drawn to Sherry.\u00a0 A relationship developed, and you moved in.\u00a0 Then, you got married and, really, didn\u2019t have a foundation for your marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA dozen years later, Scott, you are with another woman.\u00a0 Sherry, you are wondering what the future is going to look like.\u00a0 Ultimately, you pressed toward separation and toward divorce but still had a hope that God might do something in your husband\u2019s life.\u00a0 God had started to do something in your own life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t long after the divorce that God did start to stir in your heart, Scott.\u00a0 You came to faith in Christ and called Sherry and said, \u201cSomething new has happened.\u201d\u00a0 Now, you\u2019re at a place where you had to consider\u2014okay, God\u2019s done a new thing in your life\u2014\u201cWhat does that mean for our marriage relationship?\u201d because you\u2019re divorced at this point; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s correct.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re a single-parent mom, raising a son who was ten years old?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott, you\u2019re just off on your own, trying to figure out life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The two of you are trying to figure out what\u2019s next.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry, in the meantime, you are growing like a weed\u2014a good weed, spiritually.\u00a0 You\u2019re listening to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Growing like a garden, we\u2019ll say.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re growing like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m blossoming.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes\u2014like a garden!\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot going on in your life spiritually; and you\u2019re listening to our broadcast, <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, in Connecticut.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was some hope brought to you during that time, after listening to a broadcast; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 I\u2019d heard about the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.\u00a0 I had been praying for awhile that God would create that opportunity for Scott and me to be able to go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is while you\u2019re divorced?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, what did you do?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Once we started reconciling and we realized where this reconciliation was headed, I said, \u201cWe\u2019re not going another step in this relationship until we go to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>,\u201d because I did not want to start another marriage with Scott without knowing what we were doing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You said, \u201cOnce you started reconciling,\u201d what did that starting-to-reconcile process look like?\u00a0 Did you initiate that, Scott?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I guess so.\u00a0 I mean, I think we both did.\u00a0 I tried to be very tender with Sherry and did not take a step forward without her permission.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, when we first started to communicate after reconciling, we didn\u2019t even talk on the phone because she didn\u2019t want to hear my voice, initially.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we had a very brief phone call.\u00a0 Then, after that, we really exchanged emails for about two or three weeks.\u00a0 Then, we started talking on the phone again once Sherry\u2014I had enough consistent behavior that she could take that step of faith and see that I had been changed by the redeeming power of Christ\u2014and be willing to talk to me again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was just a couple of months after you\u2019d entered into the process of reconciliation that you found yourselves at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I was in North Carolina; and Sherry was still up in Connecticut with our son.\u00a0 We found one in Philadelphia.\u00a0 I drove up to Delaware, and Sherry drove down\u2014left our son with my sister in Delaware\u2014and we went to\u2014we took off together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Divorced couple at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>.\u00a0 Were you getting along pretty well at this point?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we were rediscovering each other\u2014not even rediscovering but discovering a new Scott\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014a new gentler Scott, a kinder Scott, a Scott who was loving God, who was seeking hard, following hard after God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really, I had something akin to a Damascus road experience where I was blind and then I could see.\u00a0 The scales had been removed from my eyes, and I saw Sherry as my perfect gift from God.\u00a0 Even before I understood, from the teaching at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, I had an understanding that she was not my enemy\u2014that we were on the same team, and that I still loved her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What stood out for you from that weekend\u2014anything that you remember hearing from that experience, where you said, \u201cWe can do this.\u00a0 We can rebuild this marriage\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was the first night, actually.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to listen to how you\u2019ve broken your marriage, but it was almost a relief to know that we drifted toward isolation because we weren\u2019t working toward oneness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it was huge for Scott to see, because from the world\u2019s perspective, he was the one who broke our marriage because he had the affair, and he was the alcoholic.\u00a0 Most people don\u2019t see a controlling, nagging wife as contributing to a divorce.\u00a0 I think that was really affirming for Scott to see that the entire weight of the demise of our marriage was not on his shoulders; but I did my part, and I did it really well to wreck our marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t understand that at all until that Friday night.\u00a0 At that time, I just really wasn\u2019t aware of how we both have to be intentionally working toward oneness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 On Friday night, we talk about\u2014really, it\u2019s five reasons why marriages fail.\u00a0 We\u2019re not pointing any fingers at anybody.\u00a0 We just want folks to realize what takes place\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in a relationship between two selfish, broken people\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014which we all are.\u00a0 What was your major take-away from the entire weekend?\u00a0 Was it the same, that Friday night experience?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I think so\u2014just understanding that affairs come in many colors.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just\u2014we think of love affairs, you know, of course.\u00a0 You know, work can be an affair.\u00a0 Really, an affair is more of a symptom than a cause.\u00a0 The majority of the time, an affair does not just happen out of the blue.\u00a0 There\u2019s usually an underlying lead up to that result.\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, that\u2019s not condoning the behavior.\u00a0 It\u2019s never okay to do that.\u00a0 It\u2019s never okay to make the decisions I made during that period of my life; but to have that understanding and have that sort of awakening to the brokenness that was in our marriage, it\u2014it is so crucial to unpack what you\u2019ve done wrong and understand the incorrect steps you\u2019ve taken so that you won\u2019t take them again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 And so that you can seek forgiveness and grant forgiveness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes; yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was a powerful part of the weekend.\u00a0 We stayed up <em>all night<\/em> Friday night.\u00a0 I was telling him because he was asking the ways that he had hurt me because he wanted to hear them so that he could ask for forgiveness and I could grant it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This had to be ointment to your soul\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014after he\u2019d hurt you in so many ways.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was\u2014to be heard.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was rebuilding trust, moment by moment, as he asked you those questions.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; and likewise, to be able to seek his forgiveness for the years that I had cut him with my words.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 What\u2019s interesting, too\u2014I think back about that night.\u00a0 I think about 5 o\u2019clock in the morning we laid down for two hours before we got up for breakfast\u2014just sitting there for all night long\u2014as we talked.\u00a0 Sherry had reached a place where she had, through God\u2019s power, forgiven me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we started to discuss the ways that we had hurt each other and, primarily, the way that I had hurt her, she said, \u201cWell, I\u2019ve forgiven you for that.\u00a0 I gave you a blanket of forgiveness.\u00a0 God and I have had this conversation.\u201d\u00a0 I really felt at that moment\u2014through the Holy Spirit, He just laid it on me\u2014I have to take ownership of these things.\u00a0 I have to take responsibility.\u00a0 I need to step up and say, \u201cI hurt you in that way.\u201d\u00a0 So, as these things would come up in conversation, I would say, \u201cI am sorry that I did that to you.\u00a0 Will you forgive me?\u201d\u00a0 Then, wait for her response.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was the path from that weekend to where the two of you were standing, facing one another, again, and saying, \u201cI do\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was praying together and hearing that we could not live in Connecticut anymore\u2014that we had to\u2014he couldn\u2019t come back to the lion\u2019s den\u2014that we had to move to North Carolina.\u00a0 It was a matter of putting the house on the market and moving to North Carolina.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were ready to make some drastic changes and to demonstrate, \u201cI\u2019m serious about this.\u00a0 Life\u2019s going to be different.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; I was really fostering sort of that intimate relationship with my Heavenly Father.\u00a0 He revealed to me, very quickly, that I needed to be out of there.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t be around those people and those circumstances.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had shared with us that, prior to all this, you\u2019d really had a bitterness toward God about your father\u2019s death.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it was hatred\u2014yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What happened with that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 It left the moment I surrendered.\u00a0 It was a carefully-crafted lie from the enemy.\u00a0 I heard somebody say that the enemy has a playbook, but it\u2019s really thin.\u00a0 Although his playbook is thin, he runs his plays extremely effectively.\u00a0 I believe that that\u2019s one of his plays\u2014through circumstances of life\u2014try to convince us that God is really our enemy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThrough that conversion experience that I had, it was revealed to me, through the redeeming power of Christ, that He\u2019s my daddy and He wants what\u2019s best for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to give our listeners spiritual whiplash here\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014but the rest of this story is so magnificent\u2014we have to get to it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, we just talked about a dead marriage, a divorce, two individuals who came to faith in Christ.\u00a0 You found the truth, got the biblical blueprints at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, you remarried.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t long before you two found yourselves making an impact on other marriages.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, as a matter of fact, at that <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> in Philadelphia, we went to the staff opportunity meeting, even though we were still divorced, because I was excited.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That would have been a problem about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014joining our staff at that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you know what?\u00a0 We\u2019d welcome you to the meeting though, \u201cCome on, man, come on; but let\u2019s get remarried first.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s that Labrador retriever-kind of faith.\u00a0 I was just so excited about what God had done in our lives.\u00a0 I knew, especially after going through the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>\u2014I think that was Saturday afternoon that we went to the staff opportunity meeting.\u00a0 I knew we were going to have a solid foundation this time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, not just a foundation\u2014but you turned your home into a lighthouse.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 How could we have gotten this hope and not tell other people that, no matter where you are in your marriage, there is hope.\u00a0 You can always stop whatever you\u2019re doing, and do it differently.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s a passage in the New Testament\u2014Jesus talks about, \u201cHe who is forgiven much\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cloves much.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what really turned your marriage into that lighthouse for other marriages; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 As soon as we remarried and joined the volunteer team in the Raleigh area for the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>\u2014it is just a joyful experience to be on that volunteer team.\u00a0 We had divine appointments.\u00a0 We were in the prayer room with folks.\u00a0 Folks are coming to us; and they\u2019re, really, a lot of times, on their last legs.\u00a0 We can sit down and pray with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, they look at us\u2014we\u2019ve got a lanyard around our neck\u2014they think we\u2019re these spiritual giants or whatever.\u00a0 It\u2019s like we start sharing a little bit of our story to give them hope.\u00a0 They look at us and they go, \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 You guys were divorced?\u00a0 Wait, you\u2019ve been through an affair?\u00a0 You were an alcoholic?\u00a0 You were a control freak?\u00a0 Okay, pray with me.\u00a0 Pray with me and show me how you came through that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we decided to get more and more invested in helping married couples, we developed a marriage ministry for our home church, which, at the time\u2014the only ministry that was available was a reactive ministry to those who had been through a divorce.\u00a0 We said, \u201cMan, we\u2019ve got to work with FamilyLife and start being <em>proactive<\/em> with these couples.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Get the people before they get to the divorce, like we\u2019ve gone through.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly; exactly\u2014before they get\u2014not just in the ditch but off the cliff\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 We just continued working with the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> and promoting it through our church.\u00a0 Then, <em>The<\/em> <em>Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> came on the scene. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we did <em>HomeBuilders<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> group.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 We started a <em>HomeBuilders<\/em> group and went through several of those.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>HomeBuilders<\/em> is our small group study.\u00a0 It\u2019s a curriculum that we have.\u00a0 You were with other couples going through the manuals and, probably, learning some stuff as you were leading these groups; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 Amen\u2014absolutely, especially the one about communication.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was an awesome one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s one we\u2019ve done a couple of times and, probably, need to do again.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0Well, you\u2019re also a part of a bigger movement that we\u2019re calling Homebuilders\u2014and that is people helping people.\u00a0 It is people reaching out to their neighbors, their business associates, and people at church\u2014whose marriages need encouragement\u2014need, maybe, an offensive game plan\u2014not waiting until they get into trouble\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to teach them what the Scripture teaches.\u00a0 You guys have been a part of helping to host a number of a six-hour video event, that we created, called <em>The<\/em> <em>Art of Marriage<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In fact, the very first weekend we launched <em>The<\/em> <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> in February of 2011, you guys were hosting one of these in a local church in your area; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it was our home church.\u00a0 We had started promoting it, I think, the October before; and we were really excited about it.\u00a0 We had just about 330 people there in attendance.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Serious life change took place there.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t understand the powerful way the Gospel was going to be presented.\u00a0 Of course, that is the core\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014of doing things differently in your marriage\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014okay?\u00a0 It\u2019s having that decision for salvation made in your life.\u00a0 I mean, we\u2019ve done five events now and had just about 700 people in attendance, across those five events, and 60 people have come to Christ.\u00a0 We absolutely are in love with it.\u00a0 It\u2019s really the tool that we felt we were missing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in our sort of ministry toolbox.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A part of your success, I know, has been that it has not just been your leadership and your initiative that has resulted in 700 people attending; but you\u2019re really calling other laymen and women, other couples, to grab hold of this tool and pull it into their church and make a difference where they live.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely, yes.\u00a0 I mean, Sherry and I can\u2019t be everywhere.\u00a0 What we do is\u2014we partner with churches, we partner with organizations.\u00a0 We go to a church\u2014there isn\u2019t a pastor of a church anywhere that is not going to tell you that he\u2019s got a heavy counseling load; okay?\u00a0 Unless he\u2019s got already counselors on staff that take that burden off of him, every pastor has a heavy counseling load.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when you go to a church and you say to them, \u201cLook, we\u2019ve got this event we\u2019d like to bring to you\u201d\u2014or we speak to a couple that we know that attends that church, then, they go speak to the pastor\u2014\u201cThis is going to lighten your load.\u00a0 This is going to give some fresh perspective on marriage\u2014maybe, that folks have never heard before\u2014even though they come to your church.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to lighten your counseling load for you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>We partner up with those couples.\u00a0 We call them\u2014and I know FamilyLife does, too\u2014the marriage champions.\u00a0 We find them and ask them to, \u201cThink of the other people who are likeminded in your church or in your organization and put a team together.\u00a0 Then, we\u2019ll come and show you how to do it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, during the event, we call them up on stage.\u00a0 We say, \u201cHey, look, when you think of marriage ministry here, think of these people.\u00a0 Don\u2019t think of us because we\u2019re going to be gone tomorrow.\u00a0 These people will be here.\u00a0 These people now have the tools they need to help you, through FamilyLife.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What you\u2019re talking about is so key.\u00a0 I want our listeners to make sure they hear this.\u00a0 We \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you\u2019ve still got a ways to go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve got some hills divorce.\u00a0 I know that that did occur, but you ultimately came to a faith in Christ that resulted in forgiveness of your own sins\u2014but then, that spilled over to each other.\u00a0 Now, you\u2019re taking that same forgiveness message to thousands of other couples where you live.\u00a0 I\u2019m just so grateful for you guys.\u00a0 I pray that, in the state of North Carolina and all across the country, there\u2019ll be thousands like you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Folks are coming to us; and they\u2019re, really, a lot of times, on their last legs.\u00a0 We can sit down and pray with them.\u00a0 Of course, they look at us\u2014we\u2019ve got a lanyard around our neck\u2014they think we\u2019re these spiritual giants or whatever.\u00a0 It\u2019s like we start sharing a little bit of our story to give them hope.\u00a0 They look at us and they go, \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 You guys were divorced?\u00a0 Wait, you\u2019ve been through an affair?\u00a0 You were an alcoholic?\u00a0 You were a control freak?\u00a0 Okay, pray with me.\u00a0 Show me how you came through that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 How could we have gotten this hope and not tell other people that, no matter where you are in your marriage, there is hope.\u00a0 You can always stop whatever you are doing, and do it differently.\u00a0 probably know that because of the DC Talk song more than because it came out of the Scripture.\u00a0 I mean, DC Talk\u2019s got a song like that; but anyway, I digress.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>We\u2019re hearing a story about a new thing this week about how God\u2014well, as Scott Jennings described it earlier this week\u2014God didn\u2019t just restore a marriage.\u00a0 He gave a new marriage to a couple that had a badly-damaged marriage\u2014at their own hands.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Scott and Sherry Jennings join us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Welcome back, guys.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you so much.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott and Sherry live in Goldsboro, North Carolina.\u00a0 They are the pastors of Marriage and Family Life.\u00a0 Really, it\u2019s a remarkable story of how\u2014what you just said, Bob\u2014God brought life out of a dead marriage.\u00a0 Now, you are bringing life, as we\u2019re going to hear today, to marriages that need it, as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, the two of you met in college at a keg party.\u00a0 Scott was instantly drawn to Sherry.\u00a0 A relationship developed, and you moved in.\u00a0 Then, you got married and, really, didn\u2019t have a foundation for your marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA dozen years later, Scott, you are with another woman.\u00a0 Sherry, you are wondering what the future is going to look like.\u00a0 Ultimately, you pressed toward separation and toward divorce but still had a hope that God might do something in your husband\u2019s life.\u00a0 God had started to do something in your own life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t long after the divorce that God did start to stir in your heart, Scott.\u00a0 You came to faith in Christ and called Sherry and said, \u201cSomething new has happened.\u201d\u00a0 Now, you\u2019re at a place where you had to consider\u2014okay, God\u2019s done a new thing in your life\u2014\u201cWhat does that mean for our marriage relationship?\u201d because you\u2019re divorced at this point; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s correct.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re a single-parent mom, raising a son who was ten years old?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott, you\u2019re just off on your own, trying to figure out life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The two of you are trying to figure out what\u2019s next.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry, in the meantime, you are growing like a weed\u2014a good weed, spiritually.\u00a0 You\u2019re listening to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Growing like a garden, we\u2019ll say.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re growing like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m blossoming.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes\u2014like a garden!\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot going on in your life spiritually; and you\u2019re listening to our broadcast, <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, in Connecticut.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was some hope brought to you during that time, after listening to a broadcast; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 I\u2019d heard about the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.\u00a0 I had been praying for awhile that God would create that opportunity for Scott and me to be able to go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is while you\u2019re divorced?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, what did you do?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Once we started reconciling and we realized where this reconciliation was headed, I said, \u201cWe\u2019re not going another step in this relationship until we go to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>,\u201d because I did not want to start another marriage with Scott without knowing what we were doing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You said, \u201cOnce you started reconciling,\u201d what did that starting-to-reconcile process look like?\u00a0 Did you initiate that, Scott?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I guess so.\u00a0 I mean, I think we both did.\u00a0 I tried to be very tender with Sherry and did not take a step forward without her permission.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, when we first started to communicate after reconciling, we didn\u2019t even talk on the phone because she didn\u2019t want to hear my voice, initially.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we had a very brief phone call.\u00a0 Then, after that, we really exchanged emails for about two or three weeks.\u00a0 Then, we started talking on the phone again once Sherry\u2014I had enough consistent behavior that she could take that step of faith and see that I had been changed by the redeeming power of Christ\u2014and be willing to talk to me again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was just a couple of months after you\u2019d entered into the process of reconciliation that you found yourselves at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I was in North Carolina; and Sherry was still up in Connecticut with our son.\u00a0 We found one in Philadelphia.\u00a0 I drove up to Delaware, and Sherry drove down\u2014left our son with my sister in Delaware\u2014and we went to\u2014we took off together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Divorced couple at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>.\u00a0 Were you getting along pretty well at this point?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we were rediscovering each other\u2014not even rediscovering but discovering a new Scott\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014a new gentler Scott, a kinder Scott, a Scott who was loving God, who was seeking hard, following hard after God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really, I had something akin to a Damascus road experience where I was blind and then I could see.\u00a0 The scales had been removed from my eyes, and I saw Sherry as my perfect gift from God.\u00a0 Even before I understood, from the teaching at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, I had an understanding that she was not my enemy\u2014that we were on the same team, and that I still loved her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What stood out for you from that weekend\u2014anything that you remember hearing from that experience, where you said, \u201cWe can do this.\u00a0 We can rebuild this marriage\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was the first night, actually.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to listen to how you\u2019ve broken your marriage, but it was almost a relief to know that we drifted toward isolation because we weren\u2019t working toward oneness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it was huge for Scott to see, because from the world\u2019s perspective, he was the one who broke our marriage because he had the affair, and he was the alcoholic.\u00a0 Most people don\u2019t see a controlling, nagging wife as contributing to a divorce.\u00a0 I think that was really affirming for Scott to see that the entire weight of the demise of our marriage was not on his shoulders; but I did my part, and I did it really well to wreck our marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t understand that at all until that Friday night.\u00a0 At that time, I just really wasn\u2019t aware of how we both have to be intentionally working toward oneness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 On Friday night, we talk about\u2014really, it\u2019s five reasons why marriages fail.\u00a0 We\u2019re not pointing any fingers at anybody.\u00a0 We just want folks to realize what takes place\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in a relationship between two selfish, broken people\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014which we all are.\u00a0 What was your major take-away from the entire weekend?\u00a0 Was it the same, that Friday night experience?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I think so\u2014just understanding that affairs come in many colors.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just\u2014we think of love affairs, you know, of course.\u00a0 You know, work can be an affair.\u00a0 Really, an affair is more of a symptom than a cause.\u00a0 The majority of the time, an affair does not just happen out of the blue.\u00a0 There\u2019s usually an underlying lead up to that result.\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, that\u2019s not condoning the behavior.\u00a0 It\u2019s never okay to do that.\u00a0 It\u2019s never okay to make the decisions I made during that period of my life; but to have that understanding and have that sort of awakening to the brokenness that was in our marriage, it\u2014it is so crucial to unpack what you\u2019ve done wrong and understand the incorrect steps you\u2019ve taken so that you won\u2019t take them again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 And so that you can seek forgiveness and grant forgiveness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes; yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was a powerful part of the weekend.\u00a0 We stayed up <em>all night<\/em> Friday night.\u00a0 I was telling him because he was asking the ways that he had hurt me because he wanted to hear them so that he could ask for forgiveness and I could grant it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This had to be ointment to your soul\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014after he\u2019d hurt you in so many ways.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was\u2014to be heard.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was rebuilding trust, moment by moment, as he asked you those questions.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; and likewise, to be able to seek his forgiveness for the years that I had cut him with my words.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 What\u2019s interesting, too\u2014I think back about that night.\u00a0 I think about 5 o\u2019clock in the morning we laid down for two hours before we got up for breakfast\u2014just sitting there for all night long\u2014as we talked.\u00a0 Sherry had reached a place where she had, through God\u2019s power, forgiven me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we started to discuss the ways that we had hurt each other and, primarily, the way that I had hurt her, she said, \u201cWell, I\u2019ve forgiven you for that.\u00a0 I gave you a blanket of forgiveness.\u00a0 God and I have had this conversation.\u201d\u00a0 I really felt at that moment\u2014through the Holy Spirit, He just laid it on me\u2014I have to take ownership of these things.\u00a0 I have to take responsibility.\u00a0 I need to step up and say, \u201cI hurt you in that way.\u201d\u00a0 So, as these things would come up in conversation, I would say, \u201cI am sorry that I did that to you.\u00a0 Will you forgive me?\u201d\u00a0 Then, wait for her response.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was the path from that weekend to where the two of you were standing, facing one another, again, and saying, \u201cI do\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was praying together and hearing that we could not live in Connecticut anymore\u2014that we had to\u2014he couldn\u2019t come back to the lion\u2019s den\u2014that we had to move to North Carolina.\u00a0 It was a matter of putting the house on the market and moving to North Carolina.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were ready to make some drastic changes and to demonstrate, \u201cI\u2019m serious about this.\u00a0 Life\u2019s going to be different.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; I was really fostering sort of that intimate relationship with my Heavenly Father.\u00a0 He revealed to me, very quickly, that I needed to be out of there.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t be around those people and those circumstances.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had shared with us that, prior to all this, you\u2019d really had a bitterness toward God about your father\u2019s death.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it was hatred\u2014yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What happened with that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 It left the moment I surrendered.\u00a0 It was a carefully-crafted lie from the enemy.\u00a0 I heard somebody say that the enemy has a playbook, but it\u2019s really thin.\u00a0 Although his playbook is thin, he runs his plays extremely effectively.\u00a0 I believe that that\u2019s one of his plays\u2014through circumstances of life\u2014try to convince us that God is really our enemy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThrough that conversion experience that I had, it was revealed to me, through the redeeming power of Christ, that He\u2019s my daddy and He wants what\u2019s best for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to give our listeners spiritual whiplash here\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014but the rest of this story is so magnificent\u2014we have to get to it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, we just talked about a dead marriage, a divorce, two individuals who came to faith in Christ.\u00a0 You found the truth, got the biblical blueprints at a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, you remarried.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t long before you two found yourselves making an impact on other marriages.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, as a matter of fact, at that <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> in Philadelphia, we went to the staff opportunity meeting, even though we were still divorced, because I was excited.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That would have been a problem about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014joining our staff at that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you know what?\u00a0 We\u2019d welcome you to the meeting though, \u201cCome on, man, come on; but let\u2019s get remarried first.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s that Labrador retriever-kind of faith.\u00a0 I was just so excited about what God had done in our lives.\u00a0 I knew, especially after going through the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>\u2014I think that was Saturday afternoon that we went to the staff opportunity meeting.\u00a0 I knew we were going to have a solid foundation this time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, not just a foundation\u2014but you turned your home into a lighthouse.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 How could we have gotten this hope and not tell other people that, no matter where you are in your marriage, there is hope.\u00a0 You can always stop whatever you\u2019re doing, and do it differently.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s a passage in the New Testament\u2014Jesus talks about, \u201cHe who is forgiven much\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cloves much.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what really turned your marriage into that lighthouse for other marriages; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 As soon as we remarried and joined the volunteer team in the Raleigh area for the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>\u2014it is just a joyful experience to be on that volunteer team.\u00a0 We had divine appointments.\u00a0 We were in the prayer room with folks.\u00a0 Folks are coming to us; and they\u2019re, really, a lot of times, on their last legs.\u00a0 We can sit down and pray with them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, they look at us\u2014we\u2019ve got a lanyard around our neck\u2014they think we\u2019re these spiritual giants or whatever.\u00a0 It\u2019s like we start sharing a little bit of our story to give them hope.\u00a0 They look at us and they go, \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 You guys were divorced?\u00a0 Wait, you\u2019ve been through an affair?\u00a0 You were an alcoholic?\u00a0 You were a control freak?\u00a0 Okay, pray with me.\u00a0 Pray with me and show me how you came through that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we decided to get more and more invested in helping married couples, we developed a marriage ministry for our home church, which, at the time\u2014the only ministry that was available was a reactive ministry to those who had been through a divorce.\u00a0 We said, \u201cMan, we\u2019ve got to work with FamilyLife and start being <em>proactive<\/em> with these couples.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Get the people before they get to the divorce, like we\u2019ve gone through.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly; exactly\u2014before they get\u2014not just in the ditch but off the cliff\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 We just continued working with the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> and promoting it through our church.\u00a0 Then, <em>The<\/em> <em>Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> came on the scene. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we did <em>HomeBuilders<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> group.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 We started a <em>HomeBuilders<\/em> group and went through several of those.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>HomeBuilders<\/em> is our small group study.\u00a0 It\u2019s a curriculum that we have.\u00a0 You were with other couples going through the manuals and, probably, learning some stuff as you were leading these groups; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 Amen\u2014absolutely, especially the one about communication.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was an awesome one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s one we\u2019ve done a couple of times and, probably, need to do again.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis: <\/strong>\u00a0Well, you\u2019re also a part of a bigger movement that we\u2019re calling Homebuilders\u2014and that is people helping people.\u00a0 It is people reaching out to their neighbors, their business associates, and people at church\u2014whose marriages need encouragement\u2014need, maybe, an offensive game plan\u2014not waiting until they get into trouble\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to teach them what the Scripture teaches.\u00a0 You guys have been a part of helping to host a number of a six-hour video event, that we created, called <em>The<\/em> <em>Art of Marriage<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In fact, the very first weekend we launched <em>The<\/em> <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> in February of 2011, you guys were hosting one of these in a local church in your area; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it was our home church.\u00a0 We had started promoting it, I think, the October before; and we were really excited about it.\u00a0 We had just about 330 people there in attendance.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Serious life change took place there.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t understand the powerful way the Gospel was going to be presented.\u00a0 Of course, that is the core\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014of doing things differently in your marriage\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014okay?\u00a0 It\u2019s having that decision for salvation made in your life.\u00a0 I mean, we\u2019ve done five events now and had just about 700 people in attendance, across those five events, and 60 people have come to Christ.\u00a0 We absolutely are in love with it.\u00a0 It\u2019s really the tool that we felt we were missing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in our sort of ministry toolbox.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A part of your success, I know, has been that it has not just been your leadership and your initiative that has resulted in 700 people attending; but you\u2019re really calling other laymen and women, other couples, to grab hold of this tool and pull it into their church and make a difference where they live.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely, yes.\u00a0 I mean, Sherry and I can\u2019t be everywhere.\u00a0 What we do is\u2014we partner with churches, we partner with organizations.\u00a0 We go to a church\u2014there isn\u2019t a pastor of a church anywhere that is not going to tell you that he\u2019s got a heavy counseling load; okay?\u00a0 Unless he\u2019s got already counselors on staff that take that burden off of him, every pastor has a heavy counseling load.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when you go to a church and you say to them, \u201cLook, we\u2019ve got this event we\u2019d like to bring to you\u201d\u2014or we speak to a couple that we know that attends that church, then, they go speak to the pastor\u2014\u201cThis is going to lighten your load.\u00a0 This is going to give some fresh perspective on marriage\u2014maybe, that folks have never heard before\u2014even though they come to your church.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to lighten your counseling load for you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>We partner up with those couples.\u00a0 We call them\u2014and I know FamilyLife does, too\u2014the marriage champions.\u00a0 We find them and ask them to, \u201cThink of the other people who are likeminded in your church or in your organization and put a team together.\u00a0 Then, we\u2019ll come think of these people.\u00a0 Don\u2019t think of us because we\u2019re going to be gone tomorrow.\u00a0 These people will be here.\u00a0 These people now have the tools they need to help you, through FamilyLife.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What you\u2019re talking about is so key.\u00a0 I want our listeners to make sure they hear this.\u00a0 We divorce.\u00a0 I know that that did occur, but you ultimately came to a faith in Christ that resulted in forgiveness of your own sins\u2014but then, that spilled over to each other.\u00a0 Now, you\u2019re taking that same forgiveness message to thousands of other couples where you live.\u00a0 I\u2019m just so grateful for you guys.\u00a0 I pray that, in the state of North Carolina and all across the country, there\u2019ll be thousands like you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0
