When Sherry Jennings\u2019 husband Scott had moved out of their home\u2014he had moved in with another woman, he was drinking regularly, refusing to go to counseling.\u00a0 Sherry made one of the most difficult decisions of her life.\u00a0 She decided to file for divorce.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry stood firm on that divorce date; and it turns out, it was the day of our 14<sup>th<\/sup> wedding anniversary.\u00a0 Sherry was devastated, but we went through the divorce.\u00a0 We actually rode together to the court house\u2014that was her idea.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t really sure why, but we did.\u00a0 She cried the whole way home, and I berated her.\u00a0 I took her home, and I went on a three-day bender.\u00a0 tuned.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I always kind of smile when I read some of the background of the guys who became followers of Jesus\u2014the zealot who was out inciting insurrection against the Romans, the tax collector who was cheating people out of their money and working for the Romans.\u00a0 Some of these guys did not have great reputations before they came to faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No; but they all met Christ, and they all had a transformation of both character and life.\u00a0 We have a couple with us who have experienced a transformation of life, character, marriage, family, vocation, legacy\u2014I could go on and on because your lives have really been changed.\u00a0 Scott and Sherry Jennings join us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Sherry, Scott, welcome back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thank you for having us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Earlier, we heard your story of how you both grew up, really, in homes where you didn\u2019t have a Christian upbringing\u2014where faith wasn\u2019t taught.\u00a0 You dated in college.\u00a0 You moved in with each other\u2014finally, got married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA dozen years into your marriage, that was very\u2014I wouldn\u2019t say up and down\u2014I would say mostly chaos.\u00a0 I mean\u2014and yet, in the midst of that, you were deceiving your wife Sherry, Scott.\u00a0 Sherry, you were buying it until, finally, you found out about an affair.\u00a0 There was alcoholism taking place in Scott.\u00a0 So, Sherry filed for divorce and moved toward a date on two different occasions; and you talked her out of it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 I talked her into\u2014I convinced her that I would go to counseling with her\u2014went to a few counseling sessions.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t take long before I had the counselor pretty well in my court.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, wait.\u00a0 You\u2019re in an adulterous relationship, and you\u2019re an alcoholic; and the counselor is on your side?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And Sherry has become a Christian.\u00a0 She has become a believer in Jesus Christ, and you\u2019re not.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, what were you telling the counselor?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 What she needed to hear.\u00a0 What she needed to hear.\u00a0 I became very adept at telling people what they needed to hear in order to give me what I wanted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, she wasn\u2019t a Christian counselor.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 She had pretty well decided that I needed to lighten up and have some fun.\u00a0 If I were to lighten up and have some fun, then, perhaps, he wouldn\u2019t be seeking fun with another woman.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is a lesson there for any couple who\u2019s off in a ditch.\u00a0 I believe it is \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPsalm 1 that talks about walking in the counsel of the godly\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014seeking wise counselors.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t mean just older people.\u00a0 That means people who believe the Scriptures, who walk and live in the Scriptures and have a living relationship with Jesus Christ.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t seek out that kind of advice.\u00a0 So, you didn\u2019t get that kind of advice; and that almost torpedoed your relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m just wondering, Scott.\u00a0 Here you were, having an affair\u2014was there any part of you saying, \u201cWell, maybe it\u2019s time for a new start with a new woman\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I was slowly reaching that place where I might be willing to let Sherry go; absolutely.\u00a0 The thought crossed my mind.\u00a0 Really, the thought that crossed my mind, more frequently than starting a new life, so to speak, with this other woman, was climbing on my motorcycle, and just going to California, and leaving it all.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry, you\u2019d filed for divorce and had two different dates.\u00a0 He talked you out of it twice, but something happened on the third date that you set?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I was praying about it.\u00a0 I think my biggest fear in this whole thing was I didn\u2019t want to be divorced.\u00a0 I had studied a lot, and God made it very clear in His Word that He hates divorce.\u00a0 It just broke my heart that I was going to do something that He hated; but one night, in my prayer time when I was praying about what to do, He said very clearly to me that if I did not let Scott go, He could not bring me the Christian husband that He had for me.\u00a0 So, my prayers, at that point, changed from \u201cFix, God\u201d to \u201cFather, I thank you so much for the Christian husband you have for me.\u00a0 Please let it be Scott!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you had the hope it might be him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; hope and prayer\u2014absolutely\u2014because I had prayed for God to show me Scott through His eyes.\u00a0 He just showed me this broken, little boy, painted into a corner\u2014didn\u2019t know how to get out of the mess he had created.\u00a0 I realized that He could be greater than what he was walking out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you were going to leave the third date intact?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 That was tough, especially coming up a couple of days beforehand, because Scott pulled out all the stops, at that point.\u00a0 He was more drunk than he had been, and he was threatening to kill himself.\u00a0 I just would hand him the phone and tell him to talk to the counselor because I had to do what God had told me to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were trying to push every manipulative button\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014you had at your disposal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I was pulling out the big guns.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Threatening suicide?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; and I\u2019ll be honest with you, Bob, that wasn\u2019t strictly manipulative at that time.\u00a0 I had\u2014much to Sherry\u2019s chagrin\u2014a year or two before went out and just took a bunch of money out of our retirement fund and bought a motorcycle.\u00a0 I thought many, many times, during that last few months, of just taking it up to about 100 and right into a bridge abutment\u2014thinking that would be easier than dealing with the mess I had created.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where did the turning point come for you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Sherry stood firm on that divorce date; and it turns out, it was the day of our 14<sup>th<\/sup> wedding anniversary.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, I didn\u2019t set that!\u00a0 The court does that sort of thing.\u00a0 I had nothing to do with that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 She stands firm that she didn\u2019t pick the date; but I have to say it\u2019s just\u2014to me, that\u2019s evidence of the hand of God in the midst of this mess.\u00a0 To be able to say to folks that we divorced on the day of our 14<sup>th<\/sup> wedding anniversary is powerful.\u00a0 We went through the divorce, and Sherry was devastated.\u00a0 We actually rode together to the court house.\u00a0 It was her idea.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t really sure why she would want to do that, but we did.\u00a0 She cried the whole way home, and I berated her.\u00a0 I was very verbally abusive to Sherry during these years; and on that day in particular, I was even more so.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI took her home, and I went on a three-day bender.\u00a0 By that time, the folks I was working for had started to notice that I was smelling like alcohol all the time\u2014not just early in the morning.\u00a0 I had been drinking during the day.\u00a0 I started using prescription drugs, also, at that time, and just went out\u2014spent three days, a mess.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I was at a party with the girlfriend and called over to the house to say good night to Steven, our son, and spent a little too much time on the phone, as far as my girlfriend was concerned.\u00a0 We got into a fight, and I confessed to her that I still had feelings for Sherry.\u00a0 So, she threw me out.\u00a0 She actually gave me a black eye\u2014hit me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your life was unraveling; huh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Quickly, quickly.\u00a0 Really, everything I owned in the world, at that point, fit into the back of my pickup truck.\u00a0 I called Sherry\u2014it was about midnight, I think\u2014and she allowed me to put it in the garage.\u00a0 We got into an argument at that time.\u00a0 I was drunk.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 He wanted to go upstairs and see our son.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wanted to go upstairs and see our son; and she, thankfully, would not let me.\u00a0 I say thankfully now.\u00a0 At the time, it made me infuriated\u2014left to go to a hotel, rundown place\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong> \u2014and called me a couple more times to make sure I knew you were unhappy with the decision to not allow you to come into the house.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Finally, Sherry called my sister and said to her, \u201cI can\u2019t deal with him anymore.\u00a0 He keeps calling me.\u00a0 I have to take my phone\u2014unplug my phone.\u00a0 Will you call him and talk to him?\u201d\u00a0 This is probably 3 o\u2019clock in the morning, at this point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is the same night?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I mean, I had a great job.\u00a0 I had a great family.\u00a0 I had a beautiful home.\u00a0 Our son was healthy and doing well.\u00a0 I really\u2014I had everything you are supposed to want, everything that we strive\u2014at least in the American dream kind of thing.\u00a0 I just burned it all down.\u00a0 I just burned it all down.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was sitting in that hotel room and really was at the bottom of my own pit that I had dug.\u00a0 When you go far enough down into the hole, you can only see up.\u00a0 My sister called me, and we talked.\u00a0 She said, \u201cAre you in a hotel room?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI am.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you open the drawer of the bed stand and take the Bible up?\u00a0 We\u2019ll read it together.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, I\u2019m either going to kill myself; or I\u2019m going to talk to her, let her read the Bible to me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe started to read Isaiah, Chapter 55, to me.\u00a0 Chapter 55, verse 7, says, \u201cLet the wicked man forsake his ways\u2026and turn back to God\u2026for He will freely pardon.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, maybe, maybe, maybe there is a glimmer of hope there.\u201d\u00a0 We hung up the phone, and I tried to sleep\u2014maybe got an hour or two of sleep\u2014had decided that I was going to come down to North Carolina, where my mother is still currently living, and stay at her place for awhile because she was visiting other family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>On the way down to North Carolina\u2014it was a Sunday morning.\u00a0 I remember exactly where I was.\u00a0 I was on Interstate 95\u2014just before the split to go to Norfolk.\u00a0 It was probably\u2014I don\u2019t know\u201412 or 12:30; and there was a preacher on the radio.\u00a0 I just happened to scan through.\u00a0 I usually listen to CD\u2019s.\u00a0 I happened to scan through the radio, and I\u2019ve no idea what preacher it was.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t hear his message.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll I heard was\u2014when the radio stopped scanning, it stopped on this station.\u00a0 I heard him say, \u201cIf you are lying at the bottom of your own personal pit and you need someone, not to throw you a rope, but to come down there and get you, say this prayer.\u201d\u00a0 He, on the radio, shared a sinner\u2019s prayer.\u00a0 I said that prayer, along with him, as I\u2019m driving down the highway at 70 miles an hour.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t stop.\u00a0 I just was driving while this happened.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing to me that I was able to keep control of the vehicle because, I\u2019ll be honest, I felt it all leave.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The weight of sin?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 The weight of it\u2014I physically felt it leave.\u00a0 I physically felt\u2014I had been traumatized by the enemy with hallucinations for years of a particular automobile accident that we went\u2014it was a fatal car accident.\u00a0 It was just horrible, and he pulled that out.\u00a0 Whenever I was maybe feeling like I didn\u2019t need another drink, he would play that card.\u00a0 He would\u2014I remember him saying to me, \u201cWhen you drink, you don\u2019t see that.\u201d\u00a0 I just remember distinctly hearing that.\u00a0 That was\u2014it was gone.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe desire to drink was gone.\u00a0 The anger, the burden of that anger left me.\u00a0 I physically felt lighter.\u00a0 I really felt my shoulders lift.\u00a0 It was just an amazing experience.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What you did was\u2014you gave your life, you yielded your life, you surrendered your life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to Jesus Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You said, \u201cBe my Lord, my Master, my Savior, my Redeemer.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cCome and take this wicked man and redeem him.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cGod, I am tired.\u00a0 I cannot run from You.\u00a0 I cannot resist You.\u00a0 You\u2019re what I need.\u00a0 I can\u2019t fool myself into thinking that You\u2019re not what I need anymore.\u00a0 I know what the truth is.\u00a0 You\u2019ve revealed it to me in this amazing way; and God, redeem me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes.\u00a0 I continued to North Carolina, and Sherry caught wind of my transformation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, wait.\u00a0 How did she catch wind of your transformation?\u00a0 Oh, from your sister.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Through my sister, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You told your sister, \u201cI had this thing happen on the way down.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I stopped, and I called them.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even have a cell phone at the time.\u00a0 I stopped at a pay phone, and I called them and told them.\u00a0 They were skeptical.\u00a0 I mean, they were privy.\u00a0 Sherry had walked with my sister through this trial.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here\u2019s a guy who has been manipulative.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got a pattern of manipulation.\u00a0 This could be the latest trick you\u2019re pulling out of your bag.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 True.\u00a0 However, his sister had just been so crucial in my walk with Christ, and helping me through this whole couple of years, and praying for Scott, and praying for his salvation.\u00a0 To hear her say that it was a true transformation, I had to check it out.\u00a0 I had to talk to him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had some hope for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 When was the first time you heard from Scott?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a couple of nights after that phone call.\u00a0 It was very brief, very tenuous; but he sounded so different.\u00a0 His voice sounded lighter.\u00a0 The anger was gone.\u00a0 He was gentler on the phone.\u00a0 He was soft-spoken.\u00a0 He was just\u2014it sounded like a different man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did he tell you about his conversion to Christ\u2014his commitment to the Savior?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Briefly, very briefly.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t go into great detail with that, but we started studying <em>The Purpose Driven Life<\/em> together.\u00a0 Through that\u2014sharing each day what we were reading, and talking about how we felt about God, and learning about Him, and our relationship with Him, I could see that he was not lying\u2014that he was not manipulating\u2014but that it was genuine.\u00a0 He had such a hunger for God\u2014to learn about Him, to know about Him.\u00a0 Then, in turn, to pursue me\u2014it blew me away.\u00a0 It was more than I expected.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was one additional element that you mentioned\u2014that you\u2019d begun to listen to Christian radio, and you found <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> in the process?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 We had one Christian radio station that I could get, where we were living in Connecticut.\u00a0 That was my lifeline\u2014was listening to <em>FamilyLife Today,<\/em> and listening to the wife that I wanted to be, and listening about the husband that I had wanted Scott to be, and hearing about the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em>, and just praying that someday we\u2019d be able to go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even though you were divorced?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Even while he was living with his girlfriend, that was my dream, that was my hope, that was my expectation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott, do you remember that phone call\u2014the first time you called Sherry after you\u2019d come to faith?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do.\u00a0 I remember intentionally being brief.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to get into a whole dissertation about what had happened because I had been so manipulative in the past.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want Sherry to think that I was trying to convince her, at that time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Holy Spirit had really given me an understanding of what creating trust requires.\u00a0 Words can be\u2014well, words are not effective sometimes.\u00a0 Words are not what it requires.\u00a0 What He showed me was just that consistent behavior, over a period of time, is what it would take to re-earn Sherry\u2019s trust in our marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t want to try to give her a sale.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to give her the hard sell.\u00a0 We just kept it brief.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you have hope that the marriage might be able to be repaired?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I felt very confident it would.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\u00a0 As illogical as that sounds\u2014yes, I felt confident that I was supposed to be with Sherry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All the damage you had caused\u2014all the hurt?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Really\u2014folks ask us\u2014we share our story with folks quite a bit.\u00a0 They say, \u201cWow!\u00a0 That\u2019s so great that God has restored your marriage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m kind of a car guy.\u00a0 I\u2019m a gearhead at heart.\u00a0 You think about restoration of a rust bucket\u2014taking it back to like showroom-new\u2014the way it was when it was brand-new.\u00a0 Our marriage\u2014I didn\u2019t want to go back to something when it was new.\u00a0 I wanted a <em>new <\/em>marriage.\u00a0 I wanted our marriage to be <em>redeemed<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew that I had been redeemed by our Savior, Jesus Christ.\u00a0 I had taken the brokenness, and the sickness, and just the twisted wreckage of my heart and given it to God; and He had given me a new heart.\u00a0 He had transformed me.\u00a0 I knew, through that hope, through that process\u2014I knew that God had done that for me.\u00a0 I knew He could do it for our marriage.\u00a0 I mean, it was really not a question for me.\u00a0 Whether or not it would actually happen was up to God, but I knew He could.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s what gave you the possibility of that\u2014even having the remotest hope that it could occur\u2014Jesus said in John, Chapter 5\u2014this describes what happened to you and, really, to you, too, Sherry.\u00a0 John 5:24\u2014Jesus said, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears My Word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life.\u00a0 He does not come into judgment but has passed from death to life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were dead\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, sir.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in your trespasses and sin, and disobedient to God\u2014both of you.\u00a0 Bob and I, too, before we met Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He met you in that state of deadness.\u00a0 Just as He was resurrected from the dead to eternal life, He brought about new life in you as individuals so that there could be the hope of forgiveness, reconciliation, restoration, and something totally new.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As we\u2019ll hear later on, there was something totally new that occurred that really will astound our listeners.\u00a0 your lives have really been changed.\u00a0 Scott and Sherry Jennings join us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Sherry, Scott, welcome back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thank you for having us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Earlier, we heard your story of how you both grew up, really, in homes where you didn\u2019t have a Christian upbringing\u2014where faith wasn\u2019t taught.\u00a0 You dated in college.\u00a0 You moved in with each other\u2014finally, got married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA dozen years into your marriage, that was very\u2014I wouldn\u2019t say up and down\u2014I would say mostly chaos.\u00a0 I mean\u2014and yet, in the midst of that, you were deceiving your wife Sherry, Scott.\u00a0 Sherry, you were buying it until, finally, you found out about an affair.\u00a0 There was alcoholism taking place in Scott.\u00a0 So, Sherry filed for divorce and moved toward a date on two different occasions; and you talked her out of it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 I talked her into\u2014I convinced her that I would go to counseling with her\u2014went to a few counseling sessions.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t take long before I had the counselor pretty well in my court.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, wait.\u00a0 You\u2019re in an adulterous relationship, and you\u2019re an alcoholic; and the counselor is on your side?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And Sherry has become a Christian.\u00a0 She has become a believer in Jesus Christ, and you\u2019re not.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, what were you telling the counselor?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 What she needed to hear.\u00a0 What she needed to hear.\u00a0 I became very adept at telling people what they needed to hear in order to give me what I wanted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, she wasn\u2019t a Christian counselor.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 She had pretty well decided that I needed to lighten up and have some fun.\u00a0 If I were to lighten up and have some fun, then, perhaps, he wouldn\u2019t be seeking fun with another woman.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is a lesson there for any couple who\u2019s off in a ditch.\u00a0 I believe it is \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPsalm 1 that talks about walking in the counsel of the godly\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014seeking wise counselors.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t mean just older people.\u00a0 That means people who believe the Scriptures, who walk and live in the Scriptures and have a living relationship with Jesus Christ.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t seek out that kind of advice.\u00a0 So, you didn\u2019t get that kind of advice; and that almost torpedoed your relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m just wondering, Scott.\u00a0 Here you were, having an affair\u2014was there any part of you saying, \u201cWell, maybe it\u2019s time for a new start with a new woman\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I was slowly reaching that place where I might be willing to let Sherry go; absolutely.\u00a0 The thought crossed my mind.\u00a0 Really, the thought that crossed my mind, more frequently than starting a new life, so to speak, with this other woman, was climbing on my motorcycle, and just going to California, and leaving it all.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry, you\u2019d filed for divorce and had two different dates.\u00a0 He talked you out of it twice, but something happened on the third date that you set?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I was praying about it.\u00a0 I think my biggest fear in this whole thing was I didn\u2019t want to be divorced.\u00a0 I had studied a lot, and God made it very clear in His Word that He hates divorce.\u00a0 It just broke my heart that I was going to do something that He hated; but one night, in my prayer time when I was praying about what to do, He said very clearly to me that if I did not let Scott go, He could not bring me the Christian husband that He had for me.\u00a0 So, my prayers, at that point, changed from \u201cFix, God\u201d to \u201cFather, I thank you so much for the Christian husband you have for me.\u00a0 Please let it be Scott!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you had the hope it might be him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; hope and prayer\u2014absolutely\u2014because I had prayed for God to show me Scott through His eyes.\u00a0 He just showed me this broken, little boy, painted into a corner\u2014didn\u2019t know how to get out of the mess he had created.\u00a0 I realized that He could be greater than what he was walking out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you were going to leave the third date intact?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 That was tough, especially coming up a couple of days beforehand, because Scott pulled out all the stops, at that point.\u00a0 He was more drunk than he had been, and he was threatening to kill himself.\u00a0 I just would hand him the phone and tell him to talk to the counselor because I had to do what God had told me to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were trying to push every manipulative button\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014you had at your disposal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I was pulling out the big guns.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Threatening suicide?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; and I\u2019ll be honest with you, Bob, that wasn\u2019t strictly manipulative at that time.\u00a0 I had\u2014much to Sherry\u2019s chagrin\u2014a year or two before went out and just took a bunch of money out of our retirement fund and bought a motorcycle.\u00a0 I thought many, many times, during that last few months, of just taking it up to about 100 and right into a bridge abutment\u2014thinking that would be easier than dealing with the mess I had created.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where did the turning point come for you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Sherry stood firm on that divorce date; and it turns out, it was the day of our 14<sup>th<\/sup> wedding anniversary.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, I didn\u2019t set that!\u00a0 The court does that sort of thing.\u00a0 I had nothing to do with that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 She stands firm that she didn\u2019t pick the date; but I have to say it\u2019s just\u2014to me, that\u2019s evidence of the hand of God in the midst of this mess.\u00a0 To be able to say to folks that we divorced on the day of our 14<sup>th<\/sup> wedding anniversary is powerful.\u00a0 We went through the divorce, and Sherry was devastated.\u00a0 We actually rode together to the court house.\u00a0 It was her idea.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t really sure why she would want to do that, but we did.\u00a0 She cried the whole way home, and I berated her.\u00a0 I was very verbally abusive to Sherry during these years; and on that day in particular, I was even more so.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI took her home, and I went on a three-day bender.\u00a0 By that time, the folks I was working for had started to notice that I was smelling like alcohol all the time\u2014not just early in the morning.\u00a0 I had been drinking during the day.\u00a0 I started using prescription drugs, also, at that time, and just went out\u2014spent three days, a mess.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I was at a party with the girlfriend and called over to the house to say good night to Steven, our son, and spent a little too much time on the phone, as far as my girlfriend was concerned.\u00a0 We got into a fight, and I confessed to her that I still had feelings for Sherry.\u00a0 So, she threw me out.\u00a0 She actually gave me a black eye\u2014hit me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your life was unraveling; huh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Quickly, quickly.\u00a0 Really, everything I owned in the world, at that point, fit into the back of my pickup truck.\u00a0 I called Sherry\u2014it was about midnight, I think\u2014and she allowed me to put it in the garage.\u00a0 We got into an argument at that time.\u00a0 I was drunk.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 He wanted to go upstairs and see our son.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wanted to go upstairs and see our son; and she, thankfully, would not let me.\u00a0 I say thankfully now.\u00a0 At the time, it made me infuriated\u2014left to go to a hotel, rundown place\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong> \u2014and called me a couple more times to make sure I knew you were unhappy with the decision to not allow you to come into the house.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Finally, Sherry called my sister and said to her, \u201cI can\u2019t deal with him anymore.\u00a0 He keeps calling me.\u00a0 I have to take my phone\u2014unplug my phone.\u00a0 Will you call him and talk to him?\u201d\u00a0 This is probably 3 o\u2019clock in the morning, at this point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is the same night?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I mean, I had a great job.\u00a0 I had a great family.\u00a0 I had a beautiful home.\u00a0 Our son was healthy and doing well.\u00a0 I really\u2014I had everything you are supposed to want, everything that we strive\u2014at least in the American dream kind of thing.\u00a0 I just burned it all down.\u00a0 I just burned it all down.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was sitting in that hotel room and really was at the bottom of my own pit that I had dug.\u00a0 When you go far enough down into the hole, you can only see up.\u00a0 My sister called me, and we talked.\u00a0 She said, \u201cAre you in a hotel room?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI am.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you open the drawer of the bed stand and take the Bible up?\u00a0 We\u2019ll read it together.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, I\u2019m either going to kill myself; or I\u2019m going to talk to her, let her read the Bible to me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe started to read Isaiah, Chapter 55, to me.\u00a0 Chapter 55, verse 7, says, \u201cLet the wicked man forsake his ways\u2026and turn back to God\u2026for He will freely pardon.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, maybe, maybe, maybe there is a glimmer of hope there.\u201d\u00a0 We hung up the phone, and I tried to sleep\u2014maybe got an hour or two of sleep\u2014had decided that I was going to come down to North Carolina, where my mother is still currently living, and stay at her place for awhile because she was visiting other family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>On the way down to North Carolina\u2014it was a Sunday morning.\u00a0 I remember exactly where I was.\u00a0 I was on Interstate 95\u2014just before the split to go to Norfolk.\u00a0 It was probably\u2014I don\u2019t know\u201412 or 12:30; and there was a preacher on the radio.\u00a0 I just happened to scan through.\u00a0 I usually listen to CD\u2019s.\u00a0 I happened to scan through the radio, and I\u2019ve no idea what preacher it was.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t hear his message.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll I heard was\u2014when the radio stopped scanning, it stopped on this station.\u00a0 I heard him say, \u201cIf you are lying at the bottom of your own personal pit and you need someone, not to throw you a rope, but to come down there and get you, say this prayer.\u201d\u00a0 He, on the radio, shared a sinner\u2019s prayer.\u00a0 I said that prayer, along with him, as I\u2019m driving down the highway at 70 miles an hour.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t stop.\u00a0 I just was driving while this happened.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing to me that I was able to keep control of the vehicle because, I\u2019ll be honest, I felt it all leave.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The weight of sin?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 The weight of it\u2014I physically felt it leave.\u00a0 I physically felt\u2014I had been traumatized by the enemy with hallucinations for years of a particular automobile accident that we went\u2014it was a fatal car accident.\u00a0 It was just horrible, and he pulled that out.\u00a0 Whenever I was maybe feeling like I didn\u2019t need another drink, he would play that card.\u00a0 He would\u2014I remember him saying to me, \u201cWhen you drink, you don\u2019t see that.\u201d\u00a0 I just remember distinctly hearing that.\u00a0 That was\u2014it was gone.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe desire to drink was gone.\u00a0 The anger, the burden of that anger left me.\u00a0 I physically felt lighter.\u00a0 I really felt my shoulders lift.\u00a0 It was just an amazing experience.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What you did was\u2014you gave your life, you yielded your life, you surrendered your life\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to Jesus Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You said, \u201cBe my Lord, my Master, my Savior, my Redeemer.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cCome and take this wicked man and redeem him.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cGod, I am tired.\u00a0 I cannot run from You.\u00a0 I cannot resist You.\u00a0 You\u2019re what I need.\u00a0 I can\u2019t fool myself into thinking that You\u2019re not what I need anymore.\u00a0 I know what the truth is.\u00a0 You\u2019ve revealed it to me in this amazing way; and God, redeem me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes.\u00a0 I continued to North Carolina, and Sherry caught wind of my transformation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, wait.\u00a0 How did she catch wind of your transformation?\u00a0 Oh, from your sister.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Through my sister, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You told your sister, \u201cI had this thing happen on the way down.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I stopped, and I called them.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even have a cell phone at the time.\u00a0 I stopped at a pay phone, and I called them and told them.\u00a0 They were skeptical.\u00a0 I mean, they were privy.\u00a0 Sherry had walked with my sister through this trial.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here\u2019s a guy who has been manipulative.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got a pattern of manipulation.\u00a0 This could be the latest trick you\u2019re pulling out of your bag.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 True.\u00a0 However, his sister had just been so crucial in my walk with Christ, and helping me through this whole couple of years, and praying for Scott, and praying for his salvation.\u00a0 To hear her say that it was a true transformation, I had to check it out.\u00a0 I had to talk to him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had some hope for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 When was the first time you heard from Scott?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a couple of nights after that phone call.\u00a0 It was very brief, very tenuous; but he sounded so different.\u00a0 His voice sounded lighter.\u00a0 The anger was gone.\u00a0 He was gentler on the phone.\u00a0 He was soft-spoken.\u00a0 He was just\u2014it sounded like a different man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did he tell you about his conversion to Christ\u2014his commitment to the Savior?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Briefly, very briefly.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t go into great detail with that, but we started studying <em>The Purpose Driven Life<\/em> together.\u00a0 Through that\u2014sharing each day what we were reading, and talking about how we felt about God, and learning about Him, and our relationship with Him, I could see that he was not lying\u2014that he was not manipulating\u2014but that it was genuine.\u00a0 He had such a hunger for God\u2014to learn about Him, to know about Him.\u00a0 Then, in turn, to pursue me\u2014it blew me away.\u00a0 It was more than I expected.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was one additional element that you mentioned\u2014that you\u2019d begun to listen to Christian radio, and you found <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> in the process?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 We had one Christian radio station that I could get, where we were living in Connecticut.\u00a0 That was my lifeline\u2014was listening to <em>FamilyLife Today,<\/em> and listening to the wife that I wanted to be, and listening about the husband that I had wanted Scott to be, and hearing about the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em>, and just praying that someday we\u2019d be able to go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even though you were divorced?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Even while he was living with his girlfriend, that was my dream, that was my hope, that was my expectation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott, do you remember that phone call\u2014the first time you called Sherry after you\u2019d come to faith?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do.\u00a0 I remember intentionally being brief.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to get into a whole dissertation about what had happened because I had been so manipulative in the past.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want Sherry to think that I was trying to convince her, at that time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Holy Spirit had really given me an understanding of what creating trust requires.\u00a0 Words can be\u2014well, words are not effective sometimes.\u00a0 Words are not what it requires.\u00a0 What He showed me was just that consistent behavior, over a period of time, is what it would take to re-earn Sherry\u2019s trust in our marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t want to try to give her a sale.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to give her the hard sell.\u00a0 We just kept it brief.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you have hope that the marriage might be able to be repaired?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I felt very confident it would.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\u00a0 As illogical as that sounds\u2014yes, I felt confident that I was supposed to be with Sherry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All the damage you had caused\u2014all the hurt?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Really\u2014folks ask us\u2014we share our story with folks quite a bit.\u00a0 They say, \u201cWow!\u00a0 That\u2019s so great that God has restored your marriage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m kind of a car guy.\u00a0 I\u2019m a gearhead at heart.\u00a0 You think about restoration of a rust bucket\u2014taking it back to like showroom-new\u2014the way it was when it was brand-new.\u00a0 Our marriage\u2014I didn\u2019t want to go back to something when it was new.\u00a0 I wanted a <em>new <\/em>marriage.\u00a0 I wanted our marriage to be <em>redeemed<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew that I had been redeemed by our Savior, Jesus Christ.\u00a0 I had taken the brokenness, and the sickness, and just the twisted wreckage of my heart and given it to God; and He had given me a new heart.\u00a0 He had transformed me.\u00a0 I knew, through that hope, through that process\u2014I knew that God had done that for me.\u00a0 I knew He could do it for our marriage.\u00a0 I mean, it was really not a question for me.\u00a0 Whether or not it would actually happen was up to God, but I knew He could.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s what gave you the possibility of that\u2014even having the remotest hope that it could occur\u2014Jesus said in John, Chapter 5\u2014this describes what happened to you and, really, to you, too, Sherry.\u00a0 John 5:24\u2014Jesus said, \u201cTruly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears My Word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life.\u00a0 He does not come into judgment but has passed from death to life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were dead\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, sir.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in your trespasses and sin, and disobedient to God\u2014both of you.\u00a0 Bob and I, too, before we met Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He met you in that state of deadness.\u00a0 Just as He was resurrected from the dead to eternal life, He brought about new life in you as individuals so that there could be the hope of forgiveness, reconciliation, restoration, and something totally new.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As we\u2019ll hear later on, there was something totally new that occurred that really will astound our listeners.\u00a0
