When your marriage is dying and things seem hopeless, what do you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tScott and Sherry Jennings have been in that situation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was an excellent liar\u2014and a deceiver.\u00a0 I manipulated Sherry and the people in my life to get what I wanted, when I wanted it.\u00a0 So, I ended up in an adulterous affair.\u00a0 I ended up moving out and moving in with another woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, he moved out with another woman because I knew about the affair.\u00a0 He said that he was stopping it, but I was realizing he wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 It just got to a point where I had to say, \u201cHoney, if you\u2019re going to continue to have a girlfriend and drink, you\u2019re going to have to not live here.\u201d\u00a0 I actually asked him to move out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 At the time, I just didn\u2019t know how to deal with that.\u00a0 So, I just kept turning back to alcohol\u2014more and us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a pleasure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott and Sherry live in Goldsboro, North Carolina\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What part of the state\u2014I\u2019m sorry\u2014I\u2019m not real\u2014my geography for North Carolina is not good because one time I was supposed to go to Greenville, North Carolina.\u00a0 Instead, I didn\u2019t read the wedding invitation properly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Guess where he went?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Greenville, South Carolina?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, Greenville, South Carolina.\u00a0 It turns out that there was a coach for North Carolina State who made the same mistake as I did.\u00a0 I felt like I was in good company, even though I felt like an idiot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo where\u2019s Goldsboro?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s about an hour east of Raleigh\u2014actually, not that far from Greenville, North Carolina.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott and Sherry give leadership to a marriage and family ministry in a church.\u00a0 They are Homebuilders.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, you and I have talked about\u2014for a number of years\u2014how we have wanted to create tools and make them available to couples, like Scott and Sherry, who can grab the tool and take it to their neighborhood, their church, their community, other communities, a military base\u2014as they have.\u00a0 They\u2019ve pulled out the tool of a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>\u00ae and helped with ten of those.\u00a0 They\u2019ve done five <em>Art of Marriage<\/em>\u00ae video events and have four more scheduled.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, the thought has been that there are people who have a passion and a vision to see God work in the lives of friends, family members, and people in their community in the area of marriage.\u00a0 I know for you guys\u2014that passion to see God touch people really comes out of your own story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou grew up in Massachusetts, Scott.\u00a0 Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s correct\u2014out on Cape Cod.\u00a0 It was almost an idyllic place to grow up\u2014on the water all of the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there anything spiritually going on in your life or in your family as you grew up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I recall being baptized at age nine in a church that I don\u2019t remember the name of and don\u2019t remember ever returning to.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t really a legacy that was passed down in our family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t say you had a conversion at age nine, even though you were baptized?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I think it was my parents felt it was necessary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry, you grew up in Connecticut; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, sir.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Anything going on spiritually in your life as you grew up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I grew up military.\u00a0 I grew up Catholic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You two ended up meeting.\u00a0 Tell us how that occurred.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were actually at a keg party at the University of Connecticut.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a spiritual matter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it was!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There were spirits in the room!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, Sherry was a\u2014were you a senior by then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t pay much attention to you.\u00a0 I felt bad for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I was an 18-year-old freshman and trying to fit in with a bunch of other fraternity guys.\u00a0 Sherry didn\u2019t really pay a whole lot of attention to me at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You noticed her, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes!\u00a0 We met again at another party.\u00a0 I basically followed her\u2014not followed her physically\u2014but just watched her the whole night and kept my wits about me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, that\u2019s how you tried to get on the radar.\u00a0 How <em>did <\/em>he get on the radar?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that was pretty much it.\u00a0 I mean, as a woman\u2014we like to be noticed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you knew this guy was paying attention?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely!\u00a0 We connected toward the end of the party and made plans to see each other again\u2014between visiting each other at the different schools, back and forth, for the next several months.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But he\u2019s a freshman!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, but he\u2019s very handsome, Bob.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 He was very sweet and soft-spoken at the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sometimes, even those things can transcend your age; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s exactly it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure, sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So\u2014your first date?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Gosh, what was our first date?\u00a0 I think we went to the Quad\u2014I attended the University of Massachusetts.\u00a0 She came up to visit me\u2014I didn\u2019t have a car.\u00a0 I took her out for chicken cutlets at the dining hall.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow, wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Very romantic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Very romantic.\u00a0 Then, I think we might have gone to a pizza pub or something.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But things were already starting to work in both of your hearts?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was a mutual attraction.\u00a0 How long from chicken cutlets at the dining hall until you proposed to her?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I proposed in October of 1990 actually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it was about a year and a half later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 About a year and a half later.\u00a0 We married in September of 1991.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 We very quickly became \u201cScott and Sherry\u201d\u2014sort of one word\u2014\u201cScott and Sherry.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing that your romance in college would have been like a lot of college romances, where kids aren\u2019t following Christ\u2014things kind of progressing, maybe beyond where they should have been progressing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really quickly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, when you got married, you really didn\u2019t have a whole lot of solid foundation on which to try to build anything; did you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 But we had <em>feelings<\/em>, Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we lived together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we had lived together for quite a while.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, we were prepared!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 We just had no idea what we were doing.\u00a0 We were just doing, pretty much, what had been modeled by the culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 People talk about the period in marriage where you realize the honeymoon is over.\u00a0 Did that happen quickly for you guys or was the first year a good year?\u00a0 How would you assess when you started to notice there were cracks in the foundation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think the first year was pretty good because it felt like an extension of college.\u00a0 We were still having our college friends over\u2014so it didn\u2019t feel a whole lot different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott, you were still in college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, actually, I had dropped out.\u00a0 I was on academic probation because I liked to drink more than I liked to go to class.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He had other interests other than the academic pursuits.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did; yes.\u00a0 During the summer\u2014actually, after my freshman year\u2014Sherry was attending college in Connecticut.\u00a0 She actually kind of said to me, \u201cYou are either going to move down here and we\u2019re going to continue this relationship or it\u2019s going to be over.\u201d\u00a0 She didn\u2019t want to have a long-distance relationship.\u00a0 Instead of returning to school at U Mass, I moved to Connecticut.\u00a0 That\u2019s when we moved in together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to ask you the question\u2014thinking as a parent\u2014\u201cWhat was going on back home with Mom and Dad, with Scott on academic probation?\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s dropping out of school.\u00a0 He\u2019s going down and he is moving in with this girl.\u00a0 Were they like, \u201cOh, well, I guess that\u2019s what kids do today,\u201d or were they trying to talk you out of it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were not particularly happy with my lifestyle choices at that time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is there anything they could have done that would have deterred you from the path you\u2019d set for yourself; do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not that I can think of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 No; not that I can think of\u2014wonderful parents\u2014loved us very much but were very firm with us.\u00a0 There was no relationship with God at home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry, what about with your parents when they got the news that this boy was moving down and moving in with Sherry or did you keep that kind of quiet from them for a while?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, it wasn\u2019t anything I could keep quiet.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t pleased.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But by this point, you\u2019re living your life, doing what you want to do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have an apartment.\u00a0 What are they going to do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you were married.\u00a0 Then, there began to be some problems that were more than just, \u201cThe honeymoon\u2019s over.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Really, we married in 1991, as I said.\u00a0 My father, in particular, had some physical hardships.\u00a0 He contracted polio very young and was on crutches most of his life\u2014in a wheelchair for most of my lifetime.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t feel like we had a connection beyond that relationship, where I was, essentially, his helper.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was looking forward to that opportunity, as we got older\u2014as I became an adult\u2014to maybe have a relationship with him of that nature, where I could relate to him and maybe we could develop a friendship to some degree.\u00a0 He passed away in 1994\u2014somewhat unexpectedly.\u00a0 He was 65 years old\u2014fairly young\u2014but had a lot of physical challenges, like I said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was really devastating for me.\u00a0 The good news is two years before, they had moved to North Carolina to be near my sister.\u00a0 They had gone to church with my sister and they had both accepted Christ.\u00a0 So, I know where he is and I know what he\u2019s doing.\u00a0 I\u2019ll get to see him again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, at the time, I just didn\u2019t know how to deal with that.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t understand how a God that could be your Savior would take my father from me.\u00a0 I really turned more toward some of the activities I had outside of the home.\u00a0 I was a volunteer fireman by then\u2014for about two years.\u00a0 I spent a lot of time there.\u00a0 That was back in the era, you know, of some of the departments would have a soda machine.\u00a0 One of the dispensers was always full of beer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe wouldn\u2019t talk about some of the things that we saw at a wreck or in a fire\u2014which were really things you\u2019re not supposed to see, as a human being.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t talk about them.\u00a0 If you did\u2014if it bothered you, you were weak.\u00a0 Naturally, it did bother me.\u00a0 I just kept turning back to alcohol, more and more.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry, let me ask you, \u201cWere you aware that your husband was slipping away from you and away from where he needed to be as a man?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, not because of his father\u2019s death.\u00a0 I had a very strong personality.\u00a0 I was very controlling.\u00a0 I was the boss at work and very much the boss at home.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t realize that that wasn\u2019t a good design.\u00a0 I had my plan for how our marriage was supposed to work, for how our family was supposed to work, for what we were supposed to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was realizing more and more that he wasn\u2019t participating in that plan\u2014he wasn\u2019t doing what I thought he was supposed to be doing.\u00a0 I saw more of that conflict, where he was taking more and more fire calls and spending more and more time at the bar\u2014more as being rebellion against this plan that I had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is not a recipe for a healthy relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Laughing]\u00a0\u00a0 No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, losing your dad\u2014which was traumatic for you\u2014and then some of the trauma you were being exposed to as a volunteer firefighter, and a wife who is controlling and nagging.\u00a0 You\u2019re kind of thinking, \u201cOkay, I\u2019ll just escape.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re finding that in alcohol.\u00a0 As he\u2019s doing that, you\u2019re just getting angrier and angrier\u2014it sounds like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, more and more frustrated and spending a lot more time at work.\u00a0 I had great opportunities to succeed there.\u00a0 I had a lot of affirmation there\u2014a lot of success there because they were doing what I <em>told <\/em>them to do.\u00a0 That sort of, I guess, was my escape\u2014that, and our son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And did you realize your husband was an alcoholic?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t know that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had no idea.\u00a0 No, I just thought that he was sort of still coming off the college thing.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I think it was.\u00a0 It was the transition from the college life together to the family life together.\u00a0 I think that was almost more frustrating for me as a mother and a wife.\u00a0 \u201cOkay, we have a child.\u00a0 It\u2019s time to grow up!\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t realize he was an alcoholic, but it was just time to stop partying so much.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t getting onboard with that part of the plan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think either one of us understood how the different traumatic events of losing my father and dealing with some of the things that you see as a firefighter\u2014really, we didn\u2019t know what effect that was having at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, spiritually, what\u2019s taking place?\u00a0 Here you are having been married almost 15 years by now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, it was about 12 years by then.\u00a0 At about 12 years, from when our son was born, God had started softening my heart, and the way that I was speaking, and the things that I was listening to.\u00a0 It was about 12 years into the marriage that I accepted Christ for the first time.\u00a0 I had some great girlfriends who were coming around me.\u00a0 I was just starting to realize that there was so much more to life than the marriage that we had been living\u2014the cycle of fighting, and making up, and fighting, and making up\u2014and realizing that\u2014my role as a wife\u2014I had been totally \u201cout of whack\u201d with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a gradual tug\u2014just realizing that there had to me something more to life than what we were doing.\u00a0 It was in 2003 that I started to dig in and really make some different decisions for our relationship\u2014speaking to him differently, pursuing reading <em>Purpose Driven Life<\/em>, reading some different things that sort of gave me a better foundation for who I was and for where I was going.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott mentioned earlier that you used to walk into a room\u2014a party\u2014and fill the room.\u00a0 He spoke of it\u2014past tense\u2014as though you\u2019d had a bit of a personality transformation.\u00a0 Was coming to faith in Christ so life-altering that it did, in fact, kind of change how you related to people?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely!\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 I guess, in college, I just had this need for attention because I had been so quiet in high school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry actually used to seek out arguments when we were at parties and things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was interesting.\u00a0 There was an absolute transformation in her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And all this time, you are angry with God, wondering why your dad was taken?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, your wife is starting to show some spiritual signs of life and acting differently toward you.\u00a0 What did that do for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I decided to push her further away because it made me angry at her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How far and how fast?\u00a0 I mean, where did the marriage wind up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I ended up in an adulterous affair that started\u2014I don\u2019t remember chronologically when it started, but it was around that time period.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 2003.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, 2003 or so.\u00a0 I ended up moving out and moving in with another woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry, did you have any idea that this was going on in his heart?\u00a0 When did it come to light for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I didn\u2019t really have any idea.\u00a0 That was sort of the wild part\u2014is that God got ahold of my heart to prepare me to learn about his affair so that when I did, I think I was less angry and just more heartbroken for where he was\u2014that that was something that he felt he needed to do\u2014that that was some place he needed to seek out comfort.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had just prayed for God to show me Scott through His eyes. It made it very difficult to be angry at him.\u00a0 God showed me just this broken little boy who didn\u2019t know how to get out of the mess that he had made.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There would be those listening to your story who would say, \u201cHow in the world could you miss the reality of his alcoholism\u2014now, an affair?\u00a0 I mean, how could that keep going?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I almost think God was protecting me because I, very firmly, from the beginning, had always said, \u201cIf you have an affair, I am out of here.\u00a0 We are done!\u201d\u00a0 Had I found out, before I knew Jesus Christ, we would have been done right there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 And let me say, too\u2014I tell folks now\u2014that not only was I listening to the wrong coach, but I was studying his playbook. I was an excellent liar\u2014and a deceiver.\u00a0 I manipulated Sherry and the people in my life to get what I wanted, when I wanted it.\u00a0 I think there was some of that that came into play, too, that kept Sherry kind of in the dark.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, at some point, did you draw a line in the sand?\u00a0 I mean, here, he has moved out with another woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, he moved out with another woman because I knew about the affair.\u00a0 He said that he was stopping it, but I was realizing he wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 It just got to a point where I had to say, \u201cHoney, if you\u2019re going to continue to have a girlfriend and drink, you\u2019re going to have to not live here.\u201d\u00a0 I actually asked him to move out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then did you take legal action?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did file for separation, just because I was fearful with him driving drunk so frequently.\u00a0 I wanted to financially protect our son and me.\u00a0 We actually had several divorce dates.\u00a0 We had a first divorce date, which he had asked me to postpone\u2014so, I did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t understand it because he wasn\u2019t doing any of the things that we had said would perhaps make our marriage work\u2014like giving up the girlfriend, and getting a different job, and stopping drinking\u2014but I postponed it twice and the third time\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wait, wait.\u00a0 Why did you ask her to postpone it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be honest with you.\u00a0 I really don\u2019t know.\u00a0 Obviously, I still had feelings for her; and I knew, in my heart of hearts, somewhere, what I was doing was wrong.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t really sure why, necessarily; but I knew it was wrong, though.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know why I would postpone that or ask her to, other than a desperate attempt to hang on to something that I knew was good in my life because there was so little that was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In case folks tuned in late, tell everybody, again, what you do for a living now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m the pastor of Marriage and Family Life at our church in Goldsboro.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So there was a resurrection?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Some things have changed since all of this happened!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think part of the story, Dennis, is that wherever a marriage is\u2014there is hope for a marriage to be different than where it is today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I mentioned that there was a resurrection.\u00a0 I\u2019ve said many times, the same Spirit that raised Jesus Christ from the dead can bring a dead marriage back to life.\u00a0 Death has been defeated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The tomb is empty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Christ is alive.\u00a0 He can penetrate hard hearts, deceived hearts, and deceitful hearts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Broken vessels\u2014He can make them\u2014they are still broken\u2014but they are pots that are fit for allowing Christ to live in them and through them.\u00a0 He can change human beings\u2019 lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to have to wait to hear the rest of the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to make sure our listeners dying and things seem hopeless, what do you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tScott and Sherry Jennings have been in that situation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was an excellent liar\u2014and a deceiver.\u00a0 I manipulated Sherry and the people in my life to get what I wanted, when I wanted it.\u00a0 So, I ended up in an adulterous affair.\u00a0 I ended up moving out and moving in with another woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, he moved out with another woman because I knew about the affair.\u00a0 He said that he was stopping it, but I was realizing he wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 It just got to a point where I had to say, \u201cHoney, if you\u2019re going to continue to have a girlfriend and drink, you\u2019re going to have to not live here.\u201d\u00a0 I actually asked him to move out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 At the time, I just didn\u2019t know how to deal with that.\u00a0 So, I just kept turning back to alcohol\u2014more and more.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, July you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a pleasure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott and Sherry live in Goldsboro, North Carolina\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, sir.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What part of the state\u2014I\u2019m sorry\u2014I\u2019m not real\u2014my geography for North Carolina is not good because one time I was supposed to go to Greenville, North Carolina.\u00a0 Instead, I didn\u2019t read the wedding invitation properly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Guess where he went?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Greenville, South Carolina?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, Greenville, South Carolina.\u00a0 It turns out that there was a coach for North Carolina State who made the same mistake as I did.\u00a0 I felt like I was in good company, even though I felt like an idiot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo where\u2019s Goldsboro?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s about an hour east of Raleigh\u2014actually, not that far from Greenville, North Carolina.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott and Sherry give leadership to a marriage and family ministry in a church.\u00a0 They are Homebuilders.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, you and I have talked about\u2014for a number of years\u2014how we have wanted to create tools and make them available to couples, like Scott and Sherry, who can grab the tool and take it to their neighborhood, their church, their community, other communities, a military base\u2014as they have.\u00a0 They\u2019ve pulled out the tool of a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>\u00ae and helped with ten of those.\u00a0 They\u2019ve done five <em>Art of Marriage<\/em>\u00ae video events and have four more scheduled.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, the thought has been that there are people who have a passion and a vision to see God work in the lives of friends, family members, and people in their community in the area of marriage.\u00a0 I know for you guys\u2014that passion to see God touch people really comes out of your own story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou grew up in Massachusetts, Scott.\u00a0 Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s correct\u2014out on Cape Cod.\u00a0 It was almost an idyllic place to grow up\u2014on the water all of the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there anything spiritually going on in your life or in your family as you grew up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I recall being baptized at age nine in a church that I don\u2019t remember the name of and don\u2019t remember ever returning to.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t really a legacy that was passed down in our family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t say you had a conversion at age nine, even though you were baptized?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I think it was my parents felt it was necessary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry, you grew up in Connecticut; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, sir.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Anything going on spiritually in your life as you grew up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I grew up military.\u00a0 I grew up Catholic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You two ended up meeting.\u00a0 Tell us how that occurred.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were actually at a keg party at the University of Connecticut.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a spiritual matter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it was!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There were spirits in the room!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, Sherry was a\u2014were you a senior by then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t pay much attention to you.\u00a0 I felt bad for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I was an 18-year-old freshman and trying to fit in with a bunch of other fraternity guys.\u00a0 Sherry didn\u2019t really pay a whole lot of attention to me at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You noticed her, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes!\u00a0 We met again at another party.\u00a0 I basically followed her\u2014not followed her physically\u2014but just watched her the whole night and kept my wits about me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, that\u2019s how you tried to get on the radar.\u00a0 How <em>did <\/em>he get on the radar?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that was pretty much it.\u00a0 I mean, as a woman\u2014we like to be noticed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you knew this guy was paying attention?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely!\u00a0 We connected toward the end of the party and made plans to see each other again\u2014between visiting each other at the different schools, back and forth, for the next several months.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But he\u2019s a freshman!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, but he\u2019s very handsome, Bob.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 He was very sweet and soft-spoken at the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sometimes, even those things can transcend your age; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s exactly it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure, sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So\u2014your first date?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Gosh, what was our first date?\u00a0 I think we went to the Quad\u2014I attended the University of Massachusetts.\u00a0 She came up to visit me\u2014I didn\u2019t have a car.\u00a0 I took her out for chicken cutlets at the dining hall.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow, wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Very romantic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Very romantic.\u00a0 Then, I think we might have gone to a pizza pub or something.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But things were already starting to work in both of your hearts?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was a mutual attraction.\u00a0 How long from chicken cutlets at the dining hall until you proposed to her?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I proposed in October of 1990 actually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it was about a year and a half later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 About a year and a half later.\u00a0 We married in September of 1991.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 We very quickly became \u201cScott and Sherry\u201d\u2014sort of one word\u2014\u201cScott and Sherry.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing that your romance in college would have been like a lot of college romances, where kids aren\u2019t following Christ\u2014things kind of progressing, maybe beyond where they should have been progressing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really quickly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, when you got married, you really didn\u2019t have a whole lot of solid foundation on which to try to build anything; did you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 But we had <em>feelings<\/em>, Bob!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we lived together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we had lived together for quite a while.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, we were prepared!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 We just had no idea what we were doing.\u00a0 We were just doing, pretty much, what had been modeled by the culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 People talk about the period in marriage where you realize the honeymoon is over.\u00a0 Did that happen quickly for you guys or was the first year a good year?\u00a0 How would you assess when you started to notice there were cracks in the foundation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think the first year was pretty good because it felt like an extension of college.\u00a0 We were still having our college friends over\u2014so it didn\u2019t feel a whole lot different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott, you were still in college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, actually, I had dropped out.\u00a0 I was on academic probation because I liked to drink more than I liked to go to class.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He had other interests other than the academic pursuits.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did; yes.\u00a0 During the summer\u2014actually, after my freshman year\u2014Sherry was attending college in Connecticut.\u00a0 She actually kind of said to me, \u201cYou are either going to move down here and we\u2019re going to continue this relationship or it\u2019s going to be over.\u201d\u00a0 She didn\u2019t want to have a long-distance relationship.\u00a0 Instead of returning to school at U Mass, I moved to Connecticut.\u00a0 That\u2019s when we moved in together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to ask you the question\u2014thinking as a parent\u2014\u201cWhat was going on back home with Mom and Dad, with Scott on academic probation?\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s dropping out of school.\u00a0 He\u2019s going down and he is moving in with this girl.\u00a0 Were they like, \u201cOh, well, I guess that\u2019s what kids do today,\u201d or were they trying to talk you out of it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were not particularly happy with my lifestyle choices at that time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is there anything they could have done that would have deterred you from the path you\u2019d set for yourself; do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not that I can think of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 No; not that I can think of\u2014wonderful parents\u2014loved us very much but were very firm with us.\u00a0 There was no relationship with God at home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry, what about with your parents when they got the news that this boy was moving down and moving in with Sherry or did you keep that kind of quiet from them for a while?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, it wasn\u2019t anything I could keep quiet.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t pleased.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But by this point, you\u2019re living your life, doing what you want to do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have an apartment.\u00a0 What are they going to do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you were married.\u00a0 Then, there began to be some problems that were more than just, \u201cThe honeymoon\u2019s over.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Really, we married in 1991, as I said.\u00a0 My father, in particular, had some physical hardships.\u00a0 He contracted polio very young and was on crutches most of his life\u2014in a wheelchair for most of my lifetime.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t feel like we had a connection beyond that relationship, where I was, essentially, his helper.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was looking forward to that opportunity, as we got older\u2014as I became an adult\u2014to maybe have a relationship with him of that nature, where I could relate to him and maybe we could develop a friendship to some degree.\u00a0 He passed away in 1994\u2014somewhat unexpectedly.\u00a0 He was 65 years old\u2014fairly young\u2014but had a lot of physical challenges, like I said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was really devastating for me.\u00a0 The good news is two years before, they had moved to North Carolina to be near my sister.\u00a0 They had gone to church with my sister and they had both accepted Christ.\u00a0 So, I know where he is and I know what he\u2019s doing.\u00a0 I\u2019ll get to see him again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, at the time, I just didn\u2019t know how to deal with that.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t understand how a God that could be your Savior would take my father from me.\u00a0 I really turned more toward some of the activities I had outside of the home.\u00a0 I was a volunteer fireman by then\u2014for about two years.\u00a0 I spent a lot of time there.\u00a0 That was back in the era, you know, of some of the departments would have a soda machine.\u00a0 One of the dispensers was always full of beer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe wouldn\u2019t talk about some of the things that we saw at a wreck or in a fire\u2014which were really things you\u2019re not supposed to see, as a human being.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t talk about them.\u00a0 If you did\u2014if it bothered you, you were weak.\u00a0 Naturally, it did bother me.\u00a0 I just kept turning back to alcohol, more and more.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry, let me ask you, \u201cWere you aware that your husband was slipping away from you and away from where he needed to be as a man?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, not because of his father\u2019s death.\u00a0 I had a very strong personality.\u00a0 I was very controlling.\u00a0 I was the boss at work and very much the boss at home.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t realize that that wasn\u2019t a good design.\u00a0 I had my plan for how our marriage was supposed to work, for how our family was supposed to work, for what we were supposed to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was realizing more and more that he wasn\u2019t participating in that plan\u2014he wasn\u2019t doing what I thought he was supposed to be doing.\u00a0 I saw more of that conflict, where he was taking more and more fire calls and spending more and more time at the bar\u2014more as being rebellion against this plan that I had.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is not a recipe for a healthy relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Laughing]\u00a0\u00a0 No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, losing your dad\u2014which was traumatic for you\u2014and then some of the trauma you were being exposed to as a volunteer firefighter, and a wife who is controlling and nagging.\u00a0 You\u2019re kind of thinking, \u201cOkay, I\u2019ll just escape.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re finding that in alcohol.\u00a0 As he\u2019s doing that, you\u2019re just getting angrier and angrier\u2014it sounds like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, more and more frustrated and spending a lot more time at work.\u00a0 I had great opportunities to succeed there.\u00a0 I had a lot of affirmation there\u2014a lot of success there because they were doing what I <em>told <\/em>them to do.\u00a0 That sort of, I guess, was my escape\u2014that, and our son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And did you realize your husband was an alcoholic?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t know that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had no idea.\u00a0 No, I just thought that he was sort of still coming off the college thing.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I think it was.\u00a0 It was the transition from the college life together to the family life together.\u00a0 I think that was almost more frustrating for me as a mother and a wife.\u00a0 \u201cOkay, we have a child.\u00a0 It\u2019s time to grow up!\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t realize he was an alcoholic, but it was just time to stop partying so much.\u00a0 He wasn\u2019t getting onboard with that part of the plan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think either one of us understood how the different traumatic events of losing my father and dealing with some of the things that you see as a firefighter\u2014really, we didn\u2019t know what effect that was having at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, spiritually, what\u2019s taking place?\u00a0 Here you are having been married almost 15 years by now. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, it was about 12 years by then.\u00a0 At about 12 years, from when our son was born, God had started softening my heart, and the way that I was speaking, and the things that I was listening to.\u00a0 It was about 12 years into the marriage that I accepted Christ for the first time.\u00a0 I had some great girlfriends who were coming around me.\u00a0 I was just starting to realize that there was so much more to life than the marriage that we had been living\u2014the cycle of fighting, and making up, and fighting, and making up\u2014and realizing that\u2014my role as a wife\u2014I had been totally \u201cout of whack\u201d with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a gradual tug\u2014just realizing that there had to me something more to life than what we were doing.\u00a0 It was in 2003 that I started to dig in and really make some different decisions for our relationship\u2014speaking to him differently, pursuing reading <em>Purpose Driven Life<\/em>, reading some different things that sort of gave me a better foundation for who I was and for where I was going.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Scott mentioned earlier that you used to walk into a room\u2014a party\u2014and fill the room.\u00a0 He spoke of it\u2014past tense\u2014as though you\u2019d had a bit of a personality transformation.\u00a0 Was coming to faith in Christ so life-altering that it did, in fact, kind of change how you related to people?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely!\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 I guess, in college, I just had this need for attention because I had been so quiet in high school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry actually used to seek out arguments when we were at parties and things. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was interesting.\u00a0 There was an absolute transformation in her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And all this time, you are angry with God, wondering why your dad was taken?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, your wife is starting to show some spiritual signs of life and acting differently toward you.\u00a0 What did that do for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I decided to push her further away because it made me angry at her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How far and how fast?\u00a0 I mean, where did the marriage wind up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I ended up in an adulterous affair that started\u2014I don\u2019t remember chronologically when it started, but it was around that time period.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 2003.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, 2003 or so.\u00a0 I ended up moving out and moving in with another woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sherry, did you have any idea that this was going on in his heart?\u00a0 When did it come to light for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I didn\u2019t really have any idea.\u00a0 That was sort of the wild part\u2014is that God got ahold of my heart to prepare me to learn about his affair so that when I did, I think I was less angry and just more heartbroken for where he was\u2014that that was something that he felt he needed to do\u2014that that was some place he needed to seek out comfort.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had just prayed for God to show me Scott through His eyes. It made it very difficult to be angry at him.\u00a0 God showed me just this broken little boy who didn\u2019t know how to get out of the mess that he had made.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There would be those listening to your story who would say, \u201cHow in the world could you miss the reality of his alcoholism\u2014now, an affair?\u00a0 I mean, how could that keep going?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I almost think God was protecting me because I, very firmly, from the beginning, had always said, \u201cIf you have an affair, I am out of here.\u00a0 We are done!\u201d\u00a0 Had I found out, before I knew Jesus Christ, we would have been done right there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 And let me say, too\u2014I tell folks now\u2014that not only was I listening to the wrong coach, but I was studying his playbook. I was an excellent liar\u2014and a deceiver.\u00a0 I manipulated Sherry and the people in my life to get what I wanted, when I wanted it.\u00a0 I think there was some of that that came into play, too, that kept Sherry kind of in the dark.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, at some point, did you draw a line in the sand?\u00a0 I mean, here, he has moved out with another woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, he moved out with another woman because I knew about the affair.\u00a0 He said that he was stopping it, but I was realizing he wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 It just got to a point where I had to say, \u201cHoney, if you\u2019re going to continue to have a girlfriend and drink, you\u2019re going to have to not live here.\u201d\u00a0 I actually asked him to move out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then did you take legal action?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Sherry:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did file for separation, just because I was fearful with him driving drunk so frequently.\u00a0 I wanted to financially protect our son and me.\u00a0 We actually had several divorce dates.\u00a0 We had a first divorce date, which he had asked me to postpone\u2014so, I did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t understand it because he wasn\u2019t doing any of the things that we had said would perhaps make our marriage work\u2014like giving up the girlfriend, and getting a different job, and stopping drinking\u2014but I postponed it twice and the third time\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wait, wait.\u00a0 Why did you ask her to postpone it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Scott:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be honest with you.\u00a0 I really don\u2019t know.\u00a0 Obviously, I still had feelings for her;
