Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0\u00a0 You know, one thing that you and Barbara can\u2019t say that just about everybody else in America can say\u2014you can\u2019t tell us about the first time you went to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> marriage conference and how God used it in your marriage because you were teaching the first time you went to a <em>Weekend<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s not true.\u00a0 That\u2019s not true.\u00a0 Once again, I have to correct you, here, on the broadcast<strong>.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You went to a <em>Weekend<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is quite amazing, after all these years\u201420 years!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were one of the three couples who helped found the ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; but here\u2019s the interesting thing, Bob.\u00a0 We actually went to a conference that Don and Sally Meredith led in Colorado Springs at the Antlers Hotel\u2014had to be the spring of 1975.\u00a0 We\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So this was actually before FamilyLife got started.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 It was actually prior to FamilyLife becoming a division of Campus Crusade for Christ.\u00a0 We actually attended what would become, really, the seed bed for FamilyLife to be started.\u00a0 So, technically, you\u2019re right.\u00a0 Barbara and I really never attended a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, but we got a chance to hear a good bit of the material from a couple who helped start this ministry.\u00a0 It was from that, really, that the ministry was birthed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So how was your first <em>Weekend to Remember?<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it was life-altering because it moved our picture of marriage kind of out of looking at it from a horizontal standpoint, thinking it\u2019s about Barbara and me, to realizing it\u2019s about something much larger and bigger.\u00a0 It\u2019s about the image of God.\u00a0 It\u2019s about, really, proclaiming Jesus Christ, both generationally, but also to other marriages and families throughout the country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mary Ann and I were just reflecting on the first time we went to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, which was 1987 or 1988\u2014I\u2019m not sure which year it was.\u00a0 We walked away saying, \u201cDoesn\u2019t everybody already know this?\u201d\u00a0 It was really more of a reflection of how arrogant we were than it was the material.\u00a0 But we just\u2014the pride would come to the surface later; but that weekend, we were kind of proud and a little stubborn in the whole deal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s interesting you say that because I think people come to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> and a good number of them have some biblical understanding of marriage and family; but they\u2019ve never really sat, and soaked, and studied as we attempt to take a couple through a weekend, where we look, biblically, at what marriage is all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have with us, on the broadcast today, a couple who came to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>,not in their first years of marriage, but some 16 years into your marriage relationship.\u00a0 Rusty and Robin Eckstrom join us on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\u00a0 Robin, Rusty, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 Thank you for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you so much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rusty and Robin live up north\u2014Minneapolis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That\u2019s where I was born.\u00a0 They\u2019re fellow Minnesotans.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t live long there, but that\u2019s where I hail from.\u00a0 I found out how cold it got in the winter and I said, \u201cLet\u2019s get out of here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You got out of there.\u00a0 I love Minnesota\u2014been up there fishing many times.\u00a0 Rusty and Robin have three sons and a daughter.\u00a0 Rusty works in the software business, selling software to the automotive industry and also to manufacturing companies.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou guys attended the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, as I mentioned, 16 years into your marriage.\u00a0 As you sat there\u2014what Bob has reflected on his recollections, I gave mine\u2014what did you guys think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was delighted to go.\u00a0 We were so excited to have an opportunity to be there.\u00a0 We had friends that brought us, actually through <em>HomeBuilders<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em><em>.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>There was a neighborhood <em>HomeBuilders<\/em> going on; and they said, \u201cThere\u2019s this conference.\u201d\u00a0 We said, \u201cOkay, we better do that.\u201d\u00a0 We went, and it was absolutely life-changing for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You weren\u2019t going because the two of you were at some dramatic point in your marriage and you needed to get something fixed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we didn\u2019t know that we were at a dramatic point and that we needed to be fixed.\u00a0 We did, after we were there.\u00a0 We realized a lot of things, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, seriously.\u00a0 A lot of couples get into a \u201cnormal\u201d and they get used to it.\u00a0 They think, \u201cThis is kind of what it was intended to be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right; exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, you kind of see the biblical blueprints and find out, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 God\u2019s got something in store for us here.\u00a0 Perhaps, a few of these things we have been missing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly what happened to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rusty, be honest with me.\u00a0 A lot of husbands, when their wife says, \u201cOh, let\u2019s go to this conference,\u201d they go, \u201cAhh, I think I need to change the air in the tires that weekend.\u201d\u00a0 You know, they kind of think up some reason\u2014were you excited about going to it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were\u2014had actually been prepared, along the way.\u00a0 The friends that invited us, Steve and Ann Lomm [spelling unsubstantiated]\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014were the previous regional people for Minneapolis.\u00a0 They led the volunteer team\u2014just really good friends of ours in the neighborhood.\u00a0 They had gotten us involved in <em>HomeBuilders<\/em>.\u00a0 We\u2019d already had a chance to experience some of this type of material\u2014to learn a little bit more about our relationship and what it maybe should and could be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I wasn\u2019t reluctant to go.\u00a0 When we went, as Robin mentioned, and as you discussed, we were 16 years into our marriage.\u00a0 We had a chance to sit down and talk about things that we\u2019d never discussed.\u00a0 The thing that amazed me, I guess\u2014that first weekend\u2014is the material and how easy it was to go to those places.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt let you get to things that you don\u2019t just naturally do in the busyness of life.\u00a0 We had four kids, at the time, already.\u00a0 We were busy going three different directions, every night\u2014sporting events here, and there, and everywhere.\u00a0 You don\u2019t realize what you\u2019re not doing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We help you apply what you learn.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We do that by, not only teaching and providing a manual that goes through an outline\u2014very logical, from the Scriptures\u2014but also, we give couples time for application projects, which is what you\u2019re talking about.\u00a0 You had a chance to talk about what you\u2019d heard\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and talk together about what you took away.\u00a0 Do either of you remember what your big takeaway was from that first conference?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think the biggest thing that we both realized was how much work we still needed to do and that it opened up just a bucket of issues that we didn\u2019t even realize that we had; but it was <em>so wonderful<\/em> to be able to have a glimpse of the intimacy that was going to come.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s what we saw\u2014we saw that there was great hope in us becoming more than what we were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Robin, there would be some who would hear you make that statement about opening up issues and they\u2019d go, \u201cOh, hold it; time out!\u00a0 I don\u2019t want a bucket of issues!\u00a0 Things seem to be going okay right now.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s not take the car to the mechanic.\u00a0 He might find something wrong with it.\u00a0 It\u2019s running okay; let\u2019s not mess with it.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s how a lot of people feel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 We were so wild-crazy in love by Sunday afternoon\u2014we were literally almost in the same chair.\u00a0 Do you know?\u00a0 It was so fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We like you because it saves space in the ballroom.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was so fun.\u00a0 For six months, we were on a high that came from the conference\u2014working through things and talking to each other in a new way.\u00a0 We decided that it was the right thing for us to do, every single year.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the best advice we got right away, and I have used it\u2014I\u2019ve used it for almost 20 years.\u00a0 I tell people, \u201cYou have to be obedient to the conference.\u00a0 You have to sit in the first five rows if you can, and you have to do everything they ask you to do.\u00a0 If we are called to trust and obey, then we need to do that for that weekend, too, to really see what Jesus has for us.\u201d\u00a0 It changed our life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rusty, what do you remember from that first weekend?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 My big takeaway actually came from the session on Sunday morning\u2014for the fathers and for the husbands.\u00a0 It just made me realize that, at that point in my life, I wasn\u2019t doing what I really needed to be doing for my family.\u00a0 The company, I\u2019m working for now\u2014we were a start-up, at that point.\u00a0 I was the fourth person hired.\u00a0 I was spending two to three weeks a month on the road, traveling, doing various things.\u00a0 At that point in time, you kind of do everything that needs to get done.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was also in the Navy Reserves, yet.\u00a0 I spent about nine years in active duty; and I was busy building a life\u2014doing what I thought I was supposed to be doing\u2014providing and just doing everything but really taking care of my wife and family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You guys went on to attend 12, a dozen, <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaways, and didn\u2019t just stop there.\u00a0 Somewhere, along the way, you decided you wanted to pitch in and help volunteer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat a lot of folks may not realize is we\u2019ll have more than 125 of these events, throughout the year, in every major location around the country.\u00a0 We have more than 20,000 volunteers who really are a part of bringing this <em>Weekend to Remember <\/em>marriage getaway to their community and make it happen.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you guys have been doing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve been serving on the local team\u2014that are all volunteers, helping to bring it to Minneapolis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We love doing that.\u00a0 It\u2019s wonderful.\u00a0 The best thing about the team is\u2014of course, the people on the team are fabulous and you get to see them often\u2014but the prayer that we get to blanket that conference in prayer, and the way FamilyLife has set up the book that we get to pray through on each session, and all that intercessory has been a huge privilege for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I\u2019m watching the tears well up in your eyes as you talk about praying for these people.\u00a0 What a lot of folks may not realize is we actually have boxes for prayer requests in the men\u2019s restroom and the women\u2019s restroom at these hotels.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ll get requests from people who aren\u2019t attending the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>.\u00a0 They\u2019ll put requests in there.\u00a0 But you get some really poignant requests from people who are going through some really challenging circumstances.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Very hard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You get a chance to really go before God, asking Him to break through in some very tough situations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s huge.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What kind of things do you see on those prayer request cards?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, Bob, it\u2019s so heavy.\u00a0 There is a tremendous amount of damage been done with pornography\u2014huge, huge.\u00a0 There is\u2014people lose children.\u00a0 There is infertility that they struggle so with.\u00a0 There is, of course, infidelity.\u00a0 There is\u2014every single issue that is hitting society today\u2014happens in that ballroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I know most of the folks who are coming aren\u2019t in a desperate spot.\u00a0 They\u2019re kind of like you guys were the first time that you came, but real life happens to real couples everywhere\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Everywhere.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and to have a place where you can come and say, \u201cYou know, we\u2019ve been through the rapids; and we\u2019re not sure what to do about it;\u201d and to get some help.\u00a0 There are some breakthroughs that happen that weekend; aren\u2019t there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 Our prayer room is open for couples.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had miraculous things happen.\u00a0 You know, where they say, \u201cOkay, you might be dealing with something right now.\u201d\u00a0 Literally, a couple, right outside the ballroom\u2014he just told her, \u201cI\u2019ve been having an affair with somebody at my office for three months.\u201d\u00a0 He just spit it out like that. Luckily, somebody from the team was right there.\u00a0 They just grabbed them and put them right in our prayer room.\u00a0 Then, the whole team came around them; the speakers came in.\u00a0 It\u2019s so exciting to see them come back\u2014they came back the next year and brought a group.\u00a0 We were just praising God over that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 The prayer requests can be very dark at first; but we pray over them, just relentlessly.\u00a0 We are relentlessly praying for every couple that comes\u2014every couple, by name, over, and over again\u2014and then the requests come in.\u00a0 Our team is very diligent about creating a sanctuary where we can literally come before God and stand in the gap over, and over, and over, and over again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rusty, when the weekend is over, you get a chance to hear how God has been at work as you read through evaluations that come in from couples who have attended.\u00a0 There\u2019s some pretty amazing stuff that goes on in these weekends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 It helps to balance out the weekend.\u00a0 As Robin mentioned, the prayer requests can be daunting.\u00a0 The thing that I think about that\u2019s happening, too, is we\u2019ve been in\u2014we\u2019ve been praying for these folks.\u00a0 Then, as you come out to stand by the <em>HomeBuilders<\/em> table or something, and answer questions, you just wonder, \u201cWho these people are\u2014who these couples are?\u201d as they come out.\u00a0 We get so good at hiding the stuff that\u2019s going on in our life\u2014you just don\u2019t know\u2014and you go, \u201cWho could these people be?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, then, at the end of the conference, we sit down and we go through the comments, the commentary\u2014the top ten.\u00a0 It\u2019s just unbelievable.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing\u2014the numbers of salvations, and people praying to receive the Holy Spirit and recommitting to their families and relationships.\u00a0 It really makes you realize that this is an incredibly important ministry; and that it\u2019s very, very important to be a part of this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 At some point, you guys decided you liked volunteering; but you wanted to take it a step further and have a more purposeful outreach\u2014by actually importing\u2014bringing into your community, <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, a six-hour video event that we really designed for folks like you.\u00a0 We put this together so that a couple, like you, who are passionate about making a difference in your friends, family members, associates at work, community, in your church, would be impacted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe put a tool together, a video tool, that is a turnkey deal.\u00a0 We give it to you.\u00a0 It\u2019s, \u201cPlug and play.\u201d\u00a0 Why don\u2019t you share with our listeners how you heard about <em>The Art of Marriage <\/em>and, then, what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 We first heard about it, just prior to release, in one of our team meetings with the Rail\u2019s [spelling unsubstantiated], as we were getting ready to prepare for the upcoming conference season.\u00a0 We saw just a portion of a clip that hadn\u2019t even been completely done and edited, at that point in time.\u00a0 It was some amazing stuff\u2014I don\u2019t even remember which clip we saw.\u00a0 At that point in time, we said, \u201cWe need to do this.\u00a0\u00a0 We need to have an event like this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe launch was last year, at Valentines.\u00a0 We were on the cruise, so we couldn\u2019t do that; but we said, \u201cWe still need to do one of these things.\u201d\u00a0 Fall came around\u2014it\u2019s soccer season.\u00a0 We just had ours in January\u2014we did it as a retreat for our church.\u00a0 We had \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t14 couples\u2014one salvation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe thing about it, as you mentioned, it was just very, very easy to do.\u00a0 I had a business trip late on\u2014unexpectedly, the week before.\u00a0 So, I was out of town.\u00a0 We started Friday night and Saturday.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t get home until midnight Thursday night; and the week I was planning to prep and do some other things, I was on the road.\u00a0 I was reading through the material.\u00a0 I brought my handbook with me to look at some things.\u00a0 As you mentioned, it is just simple.\u00a0 I was simply the facilitator.\u00a0 I was there to put the DVD in, and just to introduce the topic, and let people experience the material.\u00a0 It was phenomenal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The 14 couples were from\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 From our church.\u00a0 We had two from outside the church.\u00a0 Two of the couples actually had been involved in other types of marriage ministry.\u00a0 One was Marriage Encounter.\u00a0 They had done Marriage Encounter for many years, where you develop your own material and present about your relationship and life.\u00a0 Another couple was involved in Divorce Recovery and had moved from that.\u00a0 They said, \u201cThe finest marriage material that they had ever had a chance to be a part of.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cEver seen. Finest marriage material they have ever seen.\u201d\u00a0 The quality of the DVDs, the way they draw you in, the way you don\u2019t end up distracted, the way the weekend is put together, the way the sessions are mapped out\u2014if you do everything exactly as we\u2019re told to do, it was a huge blessing.\u00a0 For us to hear from couples that have been involved in this for a long time\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had young marrieds there, brand-new, brand-new young marrieds.\u00a0 We had couples that had been married for a few years, some couples that had been married around 30 years.\u00a0 We had a wide variety.\u00a0 They were blown away at the quality of the material\u2014the laughing, which was fun\u2014the joy that was there\u2014and then the amazing information they were given.\u00a0 It was six of the most powerful sessions we have ever done with FamilyLife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Some folks wondered\u2014I think all of us wondered, \u201cA video-based conference\u2014can it be as impactful and as effective as a live presentation is?\u201d\u00a0 Because you\u2019ve been to a dozen <em>Weekends to <\/em>Remember\u2014you\u2019ve seen how, in the midst of that, God shows up and some great stuff goes on.\u00a0 These are videos.\u00a0 Here you are in a retreat setting with 14 couples, popping in the DVDs into the DVD players.\u00a0 God can still show up with DVDs?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, sir.\u00a0 He sure does!\u00a0 Absolutely; and people were surprised by that.\u00a0 They\u2019re like, \u201cOh, it\u2019s a DVD series.\u00a0 We\u2019re not doing that.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cOkay.\u201d\u00a0 But when these 14 couples were done and we read our evaluations, it was very well-received.\u00a0 They were once again, \u201cThe highest quality\u2014,\u201d \u2014very engaging.\u201d\u00a0 We asked couples to trust and obey.\u00a0 Do what you\u2019re told, and DO YOUR LESSONS; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do your projects; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do your projects!\u00a0 Pay attention, do your projects; right?\u00a0 And so they did that.\u00a0 Each couple was blessed, and blessed, and blessed.\u00a0 We\u2019re doing Kingdom work; you know?\u00a0 It\u2019s so exciting!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were so excited to get a salvation from a young couple\u2014<em>so delighted<\/em> to come around him and that new marriage.\u00a0 It was so exciting for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You guys are heroes.\u00a0 You really are because we\u2019re never going to address the needs of marriage and family today through an organization that\u2019s located in Little Rock, Arkansas, or Colorado Springs, or in L.A., or Dallas, or some other major city. It really demands that we push the solutions out to the grass roots of America and put the tools in the hands of people who care, like you, and then get out of your way and say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 It\u2019s yours.\u00a0 You own it.\u00a0 Do with it what you wish, and make an impact in the people\u2019s lives that you have an influence with.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve done that, and you\u2019re a Homebuilder.\u00a0 You may now know it, but you guys are true Homebuilders\u2014part of the Homebuilders movement.\u00a0 That\u2019s, simply, people who care about other people, who want to have an impact\u2014want to provide help for them, hope for them.\u00a0 You\u2019ve done that around the issue of marriage and family, and you really are heroes.\u00a0 I appreciate you guys stepping out in faith.\u00a0 Undoubtedly, your faith has grown as a result of you stepping out and doing \u201cKingdom work\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\u00a0 We sure hope so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it\u2019s important for folks to realize\u2014you guys are just\u2014you\u2019re normal folks; right?\u00a0 I mean, you\u2019re in business, you have a family; but somehow, God has birthed in you an interest\u2014a passion in trying to do something proactively.\u00a0 We think there are more folks like you out there.\u00a0 If they\u2019ll grab a tool and change a home, they can change the world; can\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, Rusty, one thing you said, someday, is going to be a payoff.\u00a0 You may never hear them say it; but your three sons and your daughter have watched you two, you and Robin, care about the marriages and families of others.\u00a0 That has to make an impression and put an imprint on their soul\u2014that if this was important enough to Mom and Dad to give their scarce available free-time to impact others\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, they watched you, more than likely, or heard of you coming home at midnight the night before you had <em>The Art of Marriage <\/em>starting in your community.\u00a0 They\u2019ve seen the sacrifices.\u00a0 I think those messages are really important messages that we need to be giving to our children, our adult children today, because they\u2019re going to be in a battle, I promise you, for the marriages and families of their generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, they think we\u2019re But was it?","meta_box":{"show_notes":"","transcript_url":"https:\/\/transcript.familylifetoday.com\/fl2012-07-04.pdf","transcript_content":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rusty Eckstrom can think back to a time in his marriage when work was really busy; and as a result, his marriage wasn\u2019t getting the attention it deserved.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were a start-up at that time, and I was the fourth person hired.\u00a0 I was spending two to three weeks of the month on the road, traveling, doing various things.\u00a0 At that point in time, you kind of do everything.\u00a0 I was also in the Navy Reserves.\u00a0 I spent about nine years on active duty, and people used to ask me what I did in my free time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI go to Navy Reserve weekend duty.\u201d\u00a0 Rob was home with the kids; and I was busy building a life\u2014doing what I thought I was supposed to be doing\u2014providing and just doing everything.\u00a0 At that point in my life, I wasn\u2019t doing what I really needed to be doing for my family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, July 4<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0\u00a0 We\u2019ll hear about the wake-up call that happened in Rusty Eckstrom\u2019s life on today\u2019s program. Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0\u00a0 You know, one thing that you and Barbara can\u2019t say that just about everybody else in America can say\u2014you can\u2019t tell us about the first time you went to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> marriage conference and how God used it in your marriage because you were teaching the first time you went to a <em>Weekend<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s not true.\u00a0 That\u2019s not true.\u00a0 Once again, I have to correct you, here, on the broadcast<strong>.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You went to a <em>Weekend<\/em>\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is quite amazing, after all these years\u201420 years!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were one of the three couples who helped found the ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; but here\u2019s the interesting thing, Bob.\u00a0 We actually went to a conference that Don and Sally Meredith led in Colorado Springs at the Antlers Hotel\u2014had to be the spring of 1975.\u00a0 We\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So this was actually before FamilyLife got started.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 It was actually prior to FamilyLife becoming a division of Campus Crusade for Christ.\u00a0 We actually attended what would become, really, the seed bed for FamilyLife to be started.\u00a0 So, technically, you\u2019re right.\u00a0 Barbara and I really never attended a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, but we got a chance to hear a good bit of the material from a couple who helped start this ministry.\u00a0 It was from that, really, that the ministry was birthed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So how was your first <em>Weekend to Remember?<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it was life-altering because it moved our picture of marriage kind of out of looking at it from a horizontal standpoint, thinking it\u2019s about Barbara and me, to realizing it\u2019s about something much larger and bigger.\u00a0 It\u2019s about the image of God.\u00a0 It\u2019s about, really, proclaiming Jesus Christ, both generationally, but also to other marriages and families throughout the country.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mary Ann and I were just reflecting on the first time we went to a <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, which was 1987 or 1988\u2014I\u2019m not sure which year it was.\u00a0 We walked away saying, \u201cDoesn\u2019t everybody already know this?\u201d\u00a0 It was really more of a reflection of how arrogant we were than it was the material.\u00a0 But we just\u2014the pride would come to the surface later; but that weekend, we were kind of proud and a little stubborn in the whole deal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s interesting you say that because I think people come to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> and a good number of them have some biblical understanding of marriage and family; but they\u2019ve never really sat, and soaked, and studied as we attempt to take a couple through a weekend, where we look, biblically, at what marriage is all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have with us, on the broadcast today, a couple who came to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>,not in their first years of marriage, but some 16 years into your marriage relationship.\u00a0 Rusty and Robin Eckstrom join us on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\u00a0 Robin, Rusty, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 Thank you for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you so much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rusty and Robin live up north\u2014Minneapolis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That\u2019s where I was born.\u00a0 They\u2019re fellow Minnesotans.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t live long there, but that\u2019s where I hail from.\u00a0 I found out how cold it got in the winter and I said, \u201cLet\u2019s get out of here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You got out of there.\u00a0 I love Minnesota\u2014been up there fishing many times.\u00a0 Rusty and Robin have three sons and a daughter.\u00a0 Rusty works in the software business, selling software to the automotive industry and also to manufacturing companies.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou guys attended the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, as I mentioned, 16 years into your marriage.\u00a0 As you sat there\u2014what Bob has reflected on his recollections, I gave mine\u2014what did you guys think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was delighted to go.\u00a0 We were so excited to have an opportunity to be there.\u00a0 We had friends that brought us, actually through <em>HomeBuilders<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em><em>.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>There was a neighborhood <em>HomeBuilders<\/em> going on; and they said, \u201cThere\u2019s this conference.\u201d\u00a0 We said, \u201cOkay, we better do that.\u201d\u00a0 We went, and it was absolutely life-changing for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You weren\u2019t going because the two of you were at some dramatic point in your marriage and you needed to get something fixed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we didn\u2019t know that we were at a dramatic point and that we needed to be fixed.\u00a0 We did, after we were there.\u00a0 We realized a lot of things, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, seriously.\u00a0 A lot of couples get into a \u201cnormal\u201d and they get used to it.\u00a0 They think, \u201cThis is kind of what it was intended to be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right; exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>, you kind of see the biblical blueprints and find out, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 God\u2019s got something in store for us here.\u00a0 Perhaps, a few of these things we have been missing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly what happened to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rusty, be honest with me.\u00a0 A lot of husbands, when their wife says, \u201cOh, let\u2019s go to this conference,\u201d they go, \u201cAhh, I think I need to change the air in the tires that weekend.\u201d\u00a0 You know, they kind of think up some reason\u2014were you excited about going to it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were\u2014had actually been prepared, along the way.\u00a0 The friends that invited us, Steve and Ann Lomm [spelling unsubstantiated]\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014were the previous regional people for Minneapolis.\u00a0 They led the volunteer team\u2014just really good friends of ours in the neighborhood.\u00a0 They had gotten us involved in <em>HomeBuilders<\/em>.\u00a0 We\u2019d already had a chance to experience some of this type of material\u2014to learn a little bit more about our relationship and what it maybe should and could be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I wasn\u2019t reluctant to go.\u00a0 When we went, as Robin mentioned, and as you discussed, we were 16 years into our marriage.\u00a0 We had a chance to sit down and talk about things that we\u2019d never discussed.\u00a0 The thing that amazed me, I guess\u2014that first weekend\u2014is the material and how easy it was to go to those places.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt let you get to things that you don\u2019t just naturally do in the busyness of life.\u00a0 We had four kids, at the time, already.\u00a0 We were busy going three different directions, every night\u2014sporting events here, and there, and everywhere.\u00a0 You don\u2019t realize what you\u2019re not doing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We help you apply what you learn.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We do that by, not only teaching and providing a manual that goes through an outline\u2014very logical, from the Scriptures\u2014but also, we give couples time for application projects, which is what you\u2019re talking about.\u00a0 You had a chance to talk about what you\u2019d heard\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and talk together about what you took away.\u00a0 Do either of you remember what your big takeaway was from that first conference?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think the biggest thing that we both realized was how much work we still needed to do and that it opened up just a bucket of issues that we didn\u2019t even realize that we had; but it was <em>so wonderful<\/em> to be able to have a glimpse of the intimacy that was going to come.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s what we saw\u2014we saw that there was great hope in us becoming more than what we were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Robin, there would be some who would hear you make that statement about opening up issues and they\u2019d go, \u201cOh, hold it; time out!\u00a0 I don\u2019t want a bucket of issues!\u00a0 Things seem to be going okay right now.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s not take the car to the mechanic.\u00a0 He might find something wrong with it.\u00a0 It\u2019s running okay; let\u2019s not mess with it.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s how a lot of people feel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 We were so wild-crazy in love by Sunday afternoon\u2014we were literally almost in the same chair.\u00a0 Do you know?\u00a0 It was so fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We like you because it saves space in the ballroom.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was so fun.\u00a0 For six months, we were on a high that came from the conference\u2014working through things and talking to each other in a new way.\u00a0 We decided that it was the right thing for us to do, every single year.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the best advice we got right away, and I have used it\u2014I\u2019ve used it for almost 20 years.\u00a0 I tell people, \u201cYou have to be obedient to the conference.\u00a0 You have to sit in the first five rows if you can, and you have to do everything they ask you to do.\u00a0 If we are called to trust and obey, then we need to do that for that weekend, too, to really see what Jesus has for us.\u201d\u00a0 It changed our life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rusty, what do you remember from that first weekend?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 My big takeaway actually came from the session on Sunday morning\u2014for the fathers and for the husbands.\u00a0 It just made me realize that, at that point in my life, I wasn\u2019t doing what I really needed to be doing for my family.\u00a0 The company, I\u2019m working for now\u2014we were a start-up, at that point.\u00a0 I was the fourth person hired.\u00a0 I was spending two to three weeks a month on the road, traveling, doing various things.\u00a0 At that point in time, you kind of do everything that needs to get done.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was also in the Navy Reserves, yet.\u00a0 I spent about nine years in active duty; and when I had gotten out, I continued in the Reserve business.\u00a0 I\u2019m retired from that, now; but people used to ask me what I did in my free time.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI go to Navy Reserve weekend duty.\u201d\u00a0 Then I had two weeks a year to do that, as well.\u00a0 Rob was home with the kids; and I was busy building a life\u2014doing what I thought I was supposed to be doing\u2014providing and just doing everything but really taking care of my wife and family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You guys went on to attend 12, a dozen, <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> marriage getaways, and didn\u2019t just stop there.\u00a0 Somewhere, along the way, you decided you wanted to pitch in and help volunteer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat a lot of folks may not realize is we\u2019ll have more than 125 of these events, throughout the year, in every major location around the country.\u00a0 We have more than 20,000 volunteers who really are a part of bringing this <em>Weekend to Remember <\/em>marriage getaway to their community and make it happen.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you guys have been doing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve been serving on the local team\u2014that are all volunteers, helping to bring it to Minneapolis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We love doing that.\u00a0 It\u2019s wonderful.\u00a0 The best thing about the team is\u2014of course, the people on the team are fabulous and you get to see them often\u2014but the prayer that we get to blanket that conference in prayer, and the way FamilyLife has set up the book that we get to pray through on each session, and all that intercessory has been a huge privilege for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I\u2019m watching the tears well up in your eyes as you talk about praying for these people.\u00a0 What a lot of folks may not realize is we actually have boxes for prayer requests in the men\u2019s restroom and the women\u2019s restroom at these hotels.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ll get requests from people who aren\u2019t attending the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>.\u00a0 They\u2019ll put requests in there.\u00a0 But you get some really poignant requests from people who are going through some really challenging circumstances.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Very hard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You get a chance to really go before God, asking Him to break through in some very tough situations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s huge.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What kind of things do you see on those prayer request cards?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, Bob, it\u2019s so heavy.\u00a0 There is a tremendous amount of damage been done with pornography\u2014huge, huge.\u00a0 There is\u2014people lose children.\u00a0 There is infertility that they struggle so with.\u00a0 There is, of course, infidelity.\u00a0 There is\u2014every single issue that is hitting society today\u2014happens in that ballroom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I know most of the folks who are coming aren\u2019t in a desperate spot.\u00a0 They\u2019re kind of like you guys were the first time that you came, but real life happens to real couples everywhere\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Everywhere.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and to have a place where you can come and say, \u201cYou know, we\u2019ve been through the rapids; and we\u2019re not sure what to do about it;\u201d and to get some help.\u00a0 There are some breakthroughs that happen that weekend; aren\u2019t there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 Our prayer room is open for couples.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had miraculous things happen.\u00a0 You know, where they say, \u201cOkay, you might be dealing with something right now.\u201d\u00a0 Literally, a couple, right outside the ballroom\u2014he just told her, \u201cI\u2019ve been having an affair with somebody at my office for three months.\u201d\u00a0 He just spit it out like that. Luckily, somebody from the team was right there.\u00a0 They just grabbed them and put them right in our prayer room.\u00a0 Then, the whole team came around them; the speakers came in.\u00a0 It\u2019s so exciting to see them come back\u2014they came back the next year and brought a group.\u00a0 We were just praising God over that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 The prayer requests can be very dark at first; but we pray over them, just relentlessly.\u00a0 We are relentlessly praying for every couple that comes\u2014every couple, by name, over, and over again\u2014and then the requests come in.\u00a0 Our team is very diligent about creating a sanctuary where we can literally come before God and stand in the gap over, and over, and over, and over again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rusty, when the weekend is over, you get a chance to hear how God has been at work as you read through evaluations that come in from couples who have attended.\u00a0 There\u2019s some pretty amazing stuff that goes on in these weekends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 It helps to balance out the weekend.\u00a0 As Robin mentioned, the prayer requests can be daunting.\u00a0 The thing that I think about that\u2019s happening, too, is we\u2019ve been in\u2014we\u2019ve been praying for these folks.\u00a0 Then, as you come out to stand by the <em>HomeBuilders<\/em> table or something, and answer questions, you just wonder, \u201cWho these people are\u2014who these couples are?\u201d as they come out.\u00a0 We get so good at hiding the stuff that\u2019s going on in our life\u2014you just don\u2019t know\u2014and you go, \u201cWho could these people be?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, then, at the end of the conference, we sit down and we go through the comments, the commentary\u2014the top ten.\u00a0 It\u2019s just unbelievable.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing\u2014the numbers of salvations, and people praying to receive the Holy Spirit and recommitting to their families and relationships.\u00a0 It really makes you realize that this is an incredibly important ministry; and that it\u2019s very, very important to be a part of this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 At some point, you guys decided you liked volunteering; but you wanted to take it a step further and have a more purposeful outreach\u2014by actually importing\u2014bringing into your community, <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, a six-hour video event that we really designed for folks like you.\u00a0 We put this together so that a couple, like you, who are passionate about making a difference in your friends, family members, associates at work, community, in your church, would be impacted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe put a tool together, a video tool, that is a turnkey deal.\u00a0 We give it to you.\u00a0 It\u2019s, \u201cPlug and play.\u201d\u00a0 Why don\u2019t you share with our listeners how you heard about <em>The Art of Marriage <\/em>and, then, what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 We first heard about it, just prior to release, in one of our team meetings with the Rail\u2019s [spelling unsubstantiated], as we were getting ready to prepare for the upcoming conference season.\u00a0 We saw just a portion of a clip that hadn\u2019t even been completely done and edited, at that point in time.\u00a0 It was some amazing stuff\u2014I don\u2019t even remember which clip we saw.\u00a0 At that point in time, we said, \u201cWe need to do this.\u00a0\u00a0 We need to have an event like this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe launch was last year, at Valentines.\u00a0 We were on the cruise, so we couldn\u2019t do that; but we said, \u201cWe still need to do one of these things.\u201d\u00a0 Fall came around\u2014it\u2019s soccer season.\u00a0 We just had ours in January\u2014we did it as a retreat for our church.\u00a0 We had \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t14 couples\u2014one salvation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe thing about it, as you mentioned, it was just very, very easy to do.\u00a0 I had a business trip late on\u2014unexpectedly, the week before.\u00a0 So, I was out of town.\u00a0 We started Friday night and Saturday.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t get home until midnight Thursday night; and the week I was planning to prep and do some other things, I was on the road.\u00a0 I was reading through the material.\u00a0 I brought my handbook with me to look at some things.\u00a0 As you mentioned, it is just simple.\u00a0 I was simply the facilitator.\u00a0 I was there to put the DVD in, and just to introduce the topic, and let people experience the material.\u00a0 It was phenomenal.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The 14 couples were from\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 From our church.\u00a0 We had two from outside the church.\u00a0 Two of the couples actually had been involved in other types of marriage ministry.\u00a0 One was Marriage Encounter.\u00a0 They had done Marriage Encounter for many years, where you develop your own material and present about your relationship and life.\u00a0 Another couple was involved in Divorce Recovery and had moved from that.\u00a0 They said, \u201cThe finest marriage material that they had ever had a chance to be a part of.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cEver seen. Finest marriage material they have ever seen.\u201d\u00a0 The quality of the DVDs, the way they draw you in, the way you don\u2019t end up distracted, the way the weekend is put together, the way the sessions are mapped out\u2014if you do everything exactly as we\u2019re told to do, it was a huge blessing.\u00a0 For us to hear from couples that have been involved in this for a long time\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had young marrieds there, brand-new, brand-new young marrieds.\u00a0 We had couples that had been married for a few years, some couples that had been married around 30 years.\u00a0 We had a wide variety.\u00a0 They were blown away at the quality of the material\u2014the laughing, which was fun\u2014the joy that was there\u2014and then the amazing information they were given.\u00a0 It was six of the most powerful sessions we have ever done with FamilyLife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Some folks wondered\u2014I think all of us wondered, \u201cA video-based conference\u2014can it be as impactful and as effective as a live presentation is?\u201d\u00a0 Because you\u2019ve been to a dozen <em>Weekends to <\/em>Remember\u2014you\u2019ve seen how, in the midst of that, God shows up and some great stuff goes on.\u00a0 These are videos.\u00a0 Here you are in a retreat setting with 14 couples, popping in the DVDs into the DVD players.\u00a0 God can still show up with DVDs?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, sir.\u00a0 He sure does!\u00a0 Absolutely; and people were surprised by that.\u00a0 They\u2019re like, \u201cOh, it\u2019s a DVD series.\u00a0 We\u2019re not doing that.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cOkay.\u201d\u00a0 But when these 14 couples were done and we read our evaluations, it was very well-received.\u00a0 They were once again, \u201cThe highest quality\u2014,\u201d \u2014very engaging.\u201d\u00a0 We asked couples to trust and obey.\u00a0 Do what you\u2019re told, and DO YOUR LESSONS; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do your projects; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do your projects!\u00a0 Pay attention, do your projects; right?\u00a0 And so they did that.\u00a0 Each couple was blessed, and blessed, and blessed.\u00a0 We\u2019re doing Kingdom work; you know?\u00a0 It\u2019s so exciting!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were so excited to get a salvation from a young couple\u2014<em>so delighted<\/em> to come around him and that new marriage.\u00a0 It was so exciting for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You guys are heroes.\u00a0 You really are because we\u2019re never going to address the needs of marriage and family today through an organization that\u2019s located in Little Rock, Arkansas, or Colorado Springs, or in L.A., or Dallas, or some other major city. It really demands that we push the solutions out to the grass roots of America and put the tools in the hands of people who care, like you, and then get out of your way and say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 It\u2019s yours.\u00a0 You own it.\u00a0 Do with it what you wish, and make an impact in the people\u2019s lives that you have an influence with.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve done that, and you\u2019re a Homebuilder.\u00a0 You may now know it, but you guys are true Homebuilders\u2014part of the Homebuilders movement.\u00a0 That\u2019s, simply, people who care about other people, who want to have an impact\u2014want to provide help for them, hope for them.\u00a0 You\u2019ve done that around the issue of marriage and family, and you really are heroes.\u00a0 I appreciate you guys stepping out in faith.\u00a0 Undoubtedly, your faith has grown as a result of you stepping out and doing \u201cKingdom work\u201d; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\u00a0 We sure hope so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it\u2019s important for folks to realize\u2014you guys are just\u2014you\u2019re normal folks; right?\u00a0 I mean, you\u2019re in business, you have a family; but somehow, God has birthed in you an interest\u2014a passion in trying to do something proactively.\u00a0 We think there are more folks like you out there.\u00a0 If they\u2019ll grab a tool and change a home, they can change the world; can\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, Rusty, one thing you said, someday, is going to be a payoff.\u00a0 You may never hear them say it; but your three sons and your daughter have watched you two, you and Robin, care about the marriages and families of others.\u00a0 That has to make an impression and put an imprint on their soul\u2014that if this was important enough to Mom and Dad to give their scarce available free-time to impact others\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, they watched you, more than likely, or heard of you coming home at midnight the night before you had <em>The Art of Marriage <\/em>starting in your community.\u00a0 They\u2019ve seen the sacrifices.\u00a0 I think those messages are really important messages that we need to be giving to our children, our adult children today, because they\u2019re going to be in a battle, I promise you, for the marriages and families of their generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rusty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, they think we\u2019re
