Almost five years, now, Jim and Carol Garlow have battled together as Carol has suffered from primary peritoneal cancer.\u00a0 Jim is a speaker, an author; and he has continued to be the pastor at Skyline Wesleyan Church in San Diego.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was speaking in Washington D.C.\u00a0 It was a church just a few blocks from the Capitol.\u00a0 Sitting on the front row, I was the next speaker.\u00a0 The guy in front of me was speaking.\u00a0 He reported, \u201cI\u2019ve come through cancer\u2014been in remission.\u201d\u00a0 When he was reporting this remission\u2014\u201cHow long have you been in remission?\u201d\u2014the crowd clapped and cheered.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Well, my wife has been in remission\u2014I don\u2019t know how many times\u2014but the cancer has probably come back for the sixth time.\u00a0 For a nanosecond, I went, \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 Hello!\u00a0 What\u2019s this guy\u2014what\u2019s he getting it for?\u00a0 Do you not see Jim and Carol in San Diego?\u201d\u2014for a nanosecond.\u00a0 Then, I realized the words I\u2019ve heard from my father, for my whole life, \u201cBe thankful for what you do have, rather than what you don\u2019t have.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, June 28<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019ll hear today one husband\u2019s story about being in the battle with his wife against cancer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I know some of our listeners have heard you talk about seasons in your family, in your marriage, where there have been health issues that\u2014well, when they emerge, they kind of change the equilibrium of everything; don\u2019t they?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>They do; and it goes beyond the health issues, too, to being emotional issues, financial issues\u2014challenges that people face\u2014there are a lot of our listeners, right now, walking through a valley.\u00a0 It may not be the valley of the shadow of death\u2014it may be that valley, but they\u2019re learning some tough lessons.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis morning, I read this passage before coming to work, 2 Corinthians, Chapter 5, \u201cFor we know that if the tent, which is our earthly home is destroyed\u201d\u2014speaking of our bodies\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cwe have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.\u00a0 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling.\u201d\u00a0 The older I get, the more I get that passage.\u00a0 I really do long to take off that which is disintegrating\u2014my body\u2014and long to put on that which will have no more pain, no more sorrow, no more grief\u2014and see Him face to face and be with Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a friend in the studio, with us today\u2014Dr. Jim Garlow, who has been in a valley for a number of years, along with his wife Carol.\u00a0 We just want to talk with Jim about that journey and the lessons he\u2019s learned.\u00a0 Jim, welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Good to be with you, my friend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jim and his wife Carol live in San Diego.\u00a0 They\u2019ve been married 41 years\u2014have four children, five grandchildren.\u00a0 He\u2019s a pastor, an author, a commentator, historian, cultural observer.\u00a0 Jim\u2019s got his fingers in a lot of different pies; but for the past few years, you\u2019ve had to face something front and center, that a number of our listeners have also faced.\u00a0 It is the \u201cC-word,\u201d\u2014cancer\u2014your wife\u2019s cancer.\u00a0 Take us back to the day when you and Carol received that news of her being diagnosed with cancer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 On June the 18<sup>th<\/sup> of 2007, she had minor surgery; and June 19<sup>th<\/sup>, I brought her home.\u00a0 We thought everything was fine\u2014just a minor event.\u00a0 There were complications by midnight that night.\u00a0 I took her to the emergency room.\u00a0 I thought it was something very minor.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWhy don\u2019t we just take care of this, fix this quickly, and we go home?\u201d\u00a0 They kept us through the night.\u00a0 Finally, about 6 AM, she said, \u201cYou better go home and get the kids up and around for school.\u00a0 Then, you can come back.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>I raced home, where my sister and brother-in-law were there\u2014taking care of the kids.\u00a0 I let them go on home, got the kids off to school.\u00a0 At 7:09 on June 20, 2007, the phone rang\u2014and my wife, not very assertive, ordinarily, in her language\u2014she says, \u201cGet down here, now!\u201d\u00a0 I say, \u201cWhat\u2019s the matter?\u201d\u00a0 She says, \u201cCome.\u201d\u00a0 I say, \u201cWhat has happened?\u201d\u00a0 She says, \u201cWell, they\u2019ve discovered something.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhat?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cA mass.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cA mass\u2014meaning?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cJust come.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat drive from home to the hospital\u2014my mind was on computer scan a great deal and crying out to God.\u00a0 That was the beginning of what is now almost a five-year journey.\u00a0 We\u2019re at four years and approaching 11 months, right now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As a pastor, you have a large congregation.\u00a0 You\u2019ve cared for probably hundreds, if not thousands, of folks who go to your church, who have faced tough news.\u00a0 What prepared you for that moment in your life when you and Carol got that news?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 My wife was much better prepared than I was.\u00a0 She had launched an intercession ministry, a prayer ministry in our church, and had felt passionate about that issue for quite a few years\u2014raised up a lot of intercessors, had prayed with many who had cancer.\u00a0 She was on the front lines with people with cancer, more specifically than what I actually was.\u00a0 She handled it much better than I did, also.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI found myself, by the end of just a few days, coming home from the hospital.\u00a0 The turning point for me was what I call the spiritual knot hole.\u00a0 We all have to go through a spiritual knot hole at one point where we release everything\u2014where, \u201cThis could be it.\u201d\u00a0 I was fighting for my wife\u2019s life; I was clutching as much as I could emotionally.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSitting at home, alone on a late Thursday night, through the night and early Friday morning hours, it hit me\u2014that passage from Job, Chapter 2:9 where Job\u2019s wife says, \u201cCurse God and die.\u201d\u00a0 I resolved that issue that night.\u00a0 \u201cLord, I\u2019m going to love You, no matter what happens.\u00a0 If we lose this battle quickly here,\u201d\u2014as it appeared that we might at the time\u2014\u201cthat does not mitigate against Your love.\u00a0 There\u2019s nothing that tells me that You do not love me\u2014nothing in this.\u201d\u00a0 I resolved that issue.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce I got pulled through that spiritual knot, that night\u2014that Thursday and Friday night\u2014just mainly tears\u2014I was sitting in front of the computer, but I couldn\u2019t even see the screen.\u00a0 Once I went through that, I began to be able to fight for Carol\u2019s life, but with an open hand rather than a clenched fist.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The diagnosis was cancer of the liver.\u00a0 Is that right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, it actually went to that by the time it became Stage 4, but it was originally what is called primary peritoneal carcinoma.\u00a0 That is\u2014the peritoneal lining lines the abdominal cavity.\u00a0 She ended up having over 100 tumors that they took out in that first surgery.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All cancerous?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 Picture\u2014if you threw sand on a hardwood floor, that is the kind of way in which this cancer moves\u2014massive numbers, generally, pretty small\u2014although, one of them was large.\u00a0 It went up to the size of an orange.\u00a0 There were some pretty large ones at the same time, but it had moved.\u00a0 It just moved everywhere!\u00a0 Her surgery was over eight and half hours long.\u00a0 It just got so many places.\u00a0 They cut out everything they could possibly cut out of her and still keep her going.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that first week of surgery that we had\u201496 percent of those who have this type of cancer\u2014do not survive to the fifth anniversary of diagnosis.\u00a0 That\u2019s why the fifth anniversary has been so critical to us.\u00a0 We\u2019re right at four years and 11 months, at this point.\u00a0 Only 4 percent survive to the fifth anniversary.\u00a0 We quickly saw that we were facing an enormous battle here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How in the world have you handled it because you\u2019ve got all these trips to MD Anderson, you\u2019ve got all this exploratory phone calls that you\u2019re making, trying to find out, \u201cWhat are the protocols?\u00a0 What are the options?\u201d\u00a0 One case, you wrote that you had 400 different protocols, or choices, before you, that you had to go through?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Over 500 now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How have you done it all?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the secret to doing so much is to do all of it poorly.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 That\u2019s my immediate response, but I have been <em>enormously<\/em> blessed.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been <em>enormously <\/em>blessed with tremendous support\u2014support I do not deserve.\u00a0 I cannot describe the scores of people who\u2019ve come alongside us to help.\u00a0 That\u2019s where\u2014I don\u2019t see how people make it without the body of Christ.\u00a0 Our church and the body of Christ at large\u2014oh my\u2014they\u2019ve made\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is rally time when someone goes through something like this; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 We are <em>forever<\/em> indebted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the problems with going through a season like this is that many times we\u2019re not good receivers\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014of grace, and of gifts, and of people who want to give.\u00a0 Speak to that person who has a hard time receiving.\u00a0 What lesson have you learned about this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, this is fresh because we\u2019re in this battle.\u00a0 Now, Carol has good days\u2014she\u2019s up and around.\u00a0 Some days, she can\u2014there\u2019s days she gets up and drives the car.\u00a0 Most days, two out of three days, right now where we are in the journey, she\u2019s in bed until about 1:30, 2:30, 3:30 in the afternoon.\u00a0 I can almost set my clock by about 2:30 afternoon, after she\u2019s able to get up and has a level of productivity for a few hours.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust about a week or two\u2014maybe, two weeks ago, I suppose it\u2019s been now\u2014she\u2019d been in the hospital a fair amount lately, and we\u2019d just got out of the hospital.\u00a0 I walked in, and the washer had overflowed and flooded a bunch of carpet.\u00a0 I\u2019m not generally quite this emotional.\u00a0 You know, life has stuff, but I was just\u2014I really wanted\u2014I\u2019m not a crier\u2014but I really wanted to cry, right then.\u00a0 It was just, \u201cMan!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt wasn\u2019t that big of a deal, but given the dynamics of all that we were in the midst of\u2014the hospital stuff\u2014I just really wanted to cry but I pulled, and tugged, and finally got all the stuff, and got fans to start going.\u00a0 This same guy, who fixed up the backyard\u2014when he found out, he said, \u201cYou did not call me!\u00a0 I\u2019m here for you, and I\u2019m absolutely insulted that you did not call me because you have robbed me\u201d\u2014this is his language\u2014\u201cof the opportunity to serve in the way that God called me to serve.\u00a0 You kept me from doing it by you doing that when I told you that is my calling.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I realized\u2014I\u2019m trying to see it from his vantage point.\u00a0 I\u2019m slowly getting better at it; but I\u2019ve said to people over and over, \u201cI do not want\u2014when I ask you for this, I do not want you to ever feel trapped.\u00a0 This is not a forever thing.\u00a0 You can say, \u2018Okay, Jim, I can do it for two more weeks; or I can do it for today, but I can\u2019\u2014you have rights to take an exit ramp off this because this is a pretty long road so far.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve instructed our congregation because I\u2019ve learned a lot.\u00a0 People will say\u2014they\u2019ll call when somebody has a catastrophe; and they\u2019ll say, \u201cWell, let me know anything.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo, don\u2019t do that.\u00a0 Don\u2019t do that because that person will never call you back.\u00a0 What you need to do is be highly specific.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can offer something concrete.\u00a0 If a family has a catastrophe, some major event they go through, say specifically, \u201cI\u2019m able for the next two weeks to get your children to school each morning.\u00a0 I can pick them up at 7:30 and have them to class on time and pick them up each afternoon for the next two weeks.\u201d\u00a0 That way, it\u2019s very specific and the person will go, \u201cOh, thank you.\u00a0 Yes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlways be specific if you\u2019re able to, or maybe list, \u201cSome options I can do for your family:\u00a0 I can assist on this.\u00a0 I\u2019m good at organizing meals.\u00a0 I\u2019m good at having meals brought to you, maybe once each evening.\u00a0 Would that be enough?\u00a0 Tell me your tastes, your preferences.\u00a0 We\u2019ll organize meals over the next month just to cover that.\u201d\u00a0 That way, the person does not feel like, \u201cOh my, they are going to obligate themselves forever, and they\u2019ll want out of this.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s highly specific where the person doesn\u2019t have to think much because when you\u2019re hit with these things, your mind is not even clear\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, you don\u2019t know what you need, at that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly, because you don\u2019t know where the road is going\u2014all these bends and roads you are going to take\u2014I didn\u2019t know we\u2019d end up in MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.\u00a0 Now, we went a lot of other places, too.\u00a0 We went to Oasis of Hope Hospital in Tijuana, Mexico\u2014wonderful, wonderful place.\u00a0 We went to the Yeh Center in Upland California, up in the LA area.\u00a0 Then, we\u2019ve had wonderful physicians, right there in San Diego, in traditional care, but all\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt MD Anderson\u2014the number of people in Houston who meet us at airports and get us back to the airport\u2014it\u2019s absolutely amazing!\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know all these needs.\u00a0 So, if people can be as specific as they are able to when they help a family catastrophe, it\u2019s very, very appreciated.\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to take you back to what you called your knot-hole moment\u2014that point where, in the midst of this diagnosis\u2014the awareness that the doctors were saying, \u201cThis is grim.\u201d\u00a0 You came to a point where you said, \u201cWhatever happens, I will not doubt God\u2019s love.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve a friend of mine who is a young woman in her late 20\u2019s\u2014lost her mom a year and a half ago\u2014still wrestles with anger toward God for taking Mom early.\u00a0 She was just with some other friends who had lost a sister in an accident.\u00a0 The first question for them was, \u201cHow do you deal with your anger toward God?\u201d\u00a0 That knot-hole moment is critical.\u00a0 A lot of people get hung up and never get through the knot hole.\u00a0 What\u2019s your counsel to them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m going to probably report something in which I am in the minority on.\u00a0 I suspect most people don\u2019t accept this explanation\u2014and I certainly don\u2019t condemn anybody if they do.\u00a0 The framework, theologically, out of which I approach what we\u2019re in the midst of is not a framework out of which I believe that God said, \u201cOkay, I think we\u2019re going to afflict Jim and Carol with cancer right now because that\u2019s going to bring the best out of them.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is the prevailing view, and I understand why people say that.\u00a0 I don\u2019t condemn people who take that view.\u00a0 I don\u2019t condemn them at all.\u00a0 In fact, perhaps, they are right; and I\u2019m the one that\u2019s wrong.\u00a0 I take a little bit of different posture; and that is this: God created a perfect world.\u00a0 He\u2019s going to take us to a perfect world.\u00a0 In between is a pretty torn-up mess\u2014pain, heartache, suffering, sickness, disease, death, and a lot of tears.\u00a0 How did we get there?\u00a0 <br><br>We got there by Lucifer\u2019s sin, his rebellion.\u00a0 We got there by Adam and Eve\u2019s sin and our embryonic presence in that.\u00a0 We got there by even our contribution.\u00a0 If we want to blame Adam and Eve, we have walked in sin.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve contributed enough to the mess of this world, myself, in the wrong choices I have made.\u00a0 Now, you put all that together and the cumulative impact of the history of the world and the entire population walking the pathway of sin more than righteousness; and we have a mess.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the blame, to me, is not on God, who created a perfect world but was so secure, who allowed us to have the option of choice; and we chose badly.\u00a0 My anger for cancer, and heartache, and suffering is the enemy.\u00a0 My anger is the evil one.\u00a0 I\u2019ve kept appropriate anger, appropriately channeled.\u00a0 I don\u2019t blame God.\u00a0 When His full ways are followed, we had a perfect world.\u00a0 When His full ways will be followed, we will have a perfect world.\u00a0 That\u2019s what He envisions.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tConsequently, I don\u2019t find myself in a posture of blaming God.\u00a0 The only moment, in this whole journey I\u2019ve had with some real, severe angst\u2014that went pretty deep for a little while\u2014I was speaking in Washington D.C.\u00a0 It was a church just a few blocks\u2014I think eight blocks or less\u2014from the Capitol.\u00a0 Sitting on the front row, I was the next speaker.\u00a0 The guy in front of me was speaking.\u00a0 He reported, \u201cI have come through cancer\u2014been in remission.\u201d\u00a0 Well, my wife has been in remission\u2014I don\u2019t know how many times it\u2019s come back.\u00a0 It depends on how you define remission, quite frankly.\u00a0 Following one potential definition, the cancer\u2019s probably come back for the sixth time.\u00a0 The first remission was fairly long.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe nature of primary peritoneal is that it\u2014is its remissions get shorter, and shorter, and shorter until they are almost nonexistent.\u00a0 If we can call Carol\u2019s remission\u2014sometimes they use the label, even, \u201cpartial remission\u201d\u2014if the disease is in stable condition, which it is as of last week according to MRI; but I think probably it\u2019s come back six times in this process.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was sitting and listening to this guy speaking in Washington D.C., right before I was going to speak\u2014he was reporting this remission.\u00a0 \u201cHow long have you been in remission?\u201d\u2014the crowd clapped and cheered.\u00a0 For a nanosecond, I went, \u201cWait a minute, God!\u00a0 I\u2019m here.\u00a0 Hello!\u00a0 Do you not see Jim and Carol in San Diego?\u00a0 What\u2019s this guy\u2014what\u2019s he getting it for?\u201d\u2014for a nanosecond.\u00a0 Then, I realized the words I have heard from my father\u2014my father is deceased now\u2014but for my whole life was, \u201cBe thankful for what you do have, rather than what you don\u2019t have.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the midst of this battle, I blame disease, heartache, suffering, sickness, and disease on the enemy and the cumulative impact of Adam and Eve and all our participation in that.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got that as the foundation piece for me.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t address all the complexities and issues of the sovereignty of God and His power and might.\u00a0 I recognize that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut my view of miracles and healings is that every time we hear of a healing and a miracle\u2014and we\u2019re still standing in line for ours.\u00a0 We\u2019re still anticipating.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t given up at all.\u00a0 We\u2019re not discouraged.\u00a0 I\u2019m very deeply concerned, but I\u2019m not discouraged.\u00a0 When a miracle breaks through into the present tense, I believe that\u2019s the hand of the Father reaching into the future, dragging it into the present, dropping it there, and saying, \u201cHere, I want you to get a taste of what it\u2019s going to be like when I fully have restored everything to what it\u2019s going to be.\u201d\u00a0 These are hors d'oeuvres of the main course yet to come.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, this is the fact that it has not hit us yet in the fullness.\u00a0 One person made the case to me the other day\u2014said, \u201cJim, you\u2019ve had a whole series of sub-miracles,\u201d and we actually have, if I look at it that way.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t had the biggie\u2014the final breakthrough that I\u2019m really longing for\u2014to see her well here and now; but at the same time, when God does those, He\u2019s just tugging the future into the present to give us a glimpse when, \u201cI\u2019m fully in charge, and people are obeying Me, walking in My ways, in the full righteousness and wholeness.\u201d\u00a0 I envision that\u2019s the way it\u2019s going to be.\u00a0 That stirs great hope in my heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I hear you saying is\u2014you maintain your courage and not get discouraged\u2014is, really, a snapshot of what Paul\u2014what he really preceded the passage I started today\u2019s broadcast with.\u00a0 In 2 Corinthians, Chapter 4, he says, verse 16, \u201cSo, we do not lose heart.\u00a0 Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day.\u00a0 For this slight, momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen.\u00a0 For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we look, now, at what we see; and this is perishable, but there is an imperishable.\u00a0 There is a place where there will be no more sorrow, suffering, grief, no more angst, pain.\u00a0 It\u2019s that hope, I think, that keeps us going.\u00a0 What I see in your eyes, right now, that keeps you going\u2014wanting to serve Him, be faithful to Christ, and go through this valley with your wife, and maintain your relationship with God, and with her, and with your family, and your community of believers.\u00a0 That\u2019s how you do it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know when you and Barbara have been walking in a valley yourself or when you\u2019ve talked to other couples who have been there, one of the books that you have recommended to them is Jerry Sittser\u2019s book called <em>A Grace Wesleyan Church in San Diego.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was speaking in Washington D.C.\u00a0 It was a church just a few blocks from the Capitol.\u00a0 Sitting on the front row, I was the next speaker.\u00a0 The guy in front of me was speaking.\u00a0 He reported, \u201cI\u2019ve come through cancer\u2014been in remission.\u201d\u00a0 When he was reporting this remission\u2014\u201cHow long have you been in remission?\u201d\u2014the crowd clapped and cheered.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Well, my wife has been in remission\u2014I don\u2019t know how many times\u2014but the cancer has probably come back for the sixth time.\u00a0 For a nanosecond, I went, \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 Hello!\u00a0 What\u2019s this guy\u2014what\u2019s he getting it for?\u00a0 Do you not see Jim and Carol in San Diego?\u201d\u2014for a nanosecond.\u00a0 Then, I realized the words I\u2019ve heard from my father, for my whole life, \u201cBe thankful for what you do have, rather than what you don\u2019t have.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, battle with his wife against cancer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I know some of our listeners have heard you talk about seasons in your family, in your marriage, where there have been health issues that\u2014well, when they emerge, they kind of change the equilibrium of everything; don\u2019t they?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>They do; and it goes beyond the health issues, too, to being emotional issues, financial issues\u2014challenges that people face\u2014there are a lot of our listeners, right now, walking through a valley.\u00a0 It may not be the valley of the shadow of death\u2014it may be that valley, but they\u2019re learning some tough lessons.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis morning, I read this passage before coming to work, 2 Corinthians, Chapter 5, \u201cFor we know that if the tent, which is our earthly home is destroyed\u201d\u2014speaking of our bodies\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cwe have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.\u00a0 For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling.\u201d\u00a0 The older I get, the more I get that passage.\u00a0 I really do long to take off that which is disintegrating\u2014my body\u2014and long to put on that which will have no more pain, no more sorrow, no more grief\u2014and see Him face to face and be with Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a friend in the studio, with us today\u2014Dr. Jim Garlow, who has been in a valley for a number of years, along with his wife Carol.\u00a0 We just want to talk with Jim about that journey and the lessons he\u2019s learned.\u00a0 Jim, welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Good to be with you, my friend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jim and his wife Carol live in San Diego.\u00a0 They\u2019ve been married 41 years\u2014have four children, five grandchildren.\u00a0 He\u2019s a pastor, an author, a commentator, historian, cultural observer.\u00a0 Jim\u2019s got his fingers in a lot of different pies; but for the past few years, you\u2019ve had to face something front and center, that a number of our listeners have also faced.\u00a0 It is the \u201cC-word,\u201d\u2014cancer\u2014your wife\u2019s cancer.\u00a0 Take us back to the day when you and Carol received that news of her being diagnosed with cancer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 On June the 18<sup>th<\/sup> of 2007, she had minor surgery; and June 19<sup>th<\/sup>, I brought her home.\u00a0 We thought everything was fine\u2014just a minor event.\u00a0 There were complications by midnight that night.\u00a0 I took her to the emergency room.\u00a0 I thought it was something very minor.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWhy don\u2019t we just take care of this, fix this quickly, and we go home?\u201d\u00a0 They kept us through the night.\u00a0 Finally, about 6 AM, she said, \u201cYou better go home and get the kids up and around for school.\u00a0 Then, you can come back.\u201d\u00a0 <br><br>I raced home, where my sister and brother-in-law were there\u2014taking care of the kids.\u00a0 I let them go on home, got the kids off to school.\u00a0 At 7:09 on June 20, 2007, the phone rang\u2014and my wife, not very assertive, ordinarily, in her language\u2014she says, \u201cGet down here, now!\u201d\u00a0 I say, \u201cWhat\u2019s the matter?\u201d\u00a0 She says, \u201cCome.\u201d\u00a0 I say, \u201cWhat has happened?\u201d\u00a0 She says, \u201cWell, they\u2019ve discovered something.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhat?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cA mass.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cA mass\u2014meaning?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cJust come.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat drive from home to the hospital\u2014my mind was on computer scan a great deal and crying out to God.\u00a0 That was the beginning of what is now almost a five-year journey.\u00a0 We\u2019re at four years and approaching 11 months, right now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As a pastor, you have a large congregation.\u00a0 You\u2019ve cared for probably hundreds, if not thousands, of folks who go to your church, who have faced tough news.\u00a0 What prepared you for that moment in your life when you and Carol got that news?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 My wife was much better prepared than I was.\u00a0 She had launched an intercession ministry, a prayer ministry in our church, and had felt passionate about that issue for quite a few years\u2014raised up a lot of intercessors, had prayed with many who had cancer.\u00a0 She was on the front lines with people with cancer, more specifically than what I actually was.\u00a0 She handled it much better than I did, also.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI found myself, by the end of just a few days, coming home from the hospital.\u00a0 The turning point for me was what I call the spiritual knot hole.\u00a0 We all have to go through a spiritual knot hole at one point where we release everything\u2014where, \u201cThis could be it.\u201d\u00a0 I was fighting for my wife\u2019s life; I was clutching as much as I could emotionally.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSitting at home, alone on a late Thursday night, through the night and early Friday morning hours, it hit me\u2014that passage from Job, Chapter 2:9 where Job\u2019s wife says, \u201cCurse God and die.\u201d\u00a0 I resolved that issue that night.\u00a0 \u201cLord, I\u2019m going to love You, no matter what happens.\u00a0 If we lose this battle quickly here,\u201d\u2014as it appeared that we might at the time\u2014\u201cthat does not mitigate against Your love.\u00a0 There\u2019s nothing that tells me that You do not love me\u2014nothing in this.\u201d\u00a0 I resolved that issue.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce I got pulled through that spiritual knot, that night\u2014that Thursday and Friday night\u2014just mainly tears\u2014I was sitting in front of the computer, but I couldn\u2019t even see the screen.\u00a0 Once I went through that, I began to be able to fight for Carol\u2019s life, but with an open hand rather than a clenched fist.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The diagnosis was cancer of the liver.\u00a0 Is that right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, it actually went to that by the time it became Stage 4, but it was originally what is called primary peritoneal carcinoma.\u00a0 That is\u2014the peritoneal lining lines the abdominal cavity.\u00a0 She ended up having over 100 tumors that they took out in that first surgery.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All cancerous?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 Picture\u2014if you threw sand on a hardwood floor, that is the kind of way in which this cancer moves\u2014massive numbers, generally, pretty small\u2014although, one of them was large.\u00a0 It went up to the size of an orange.\u00a0 There were some pretty large ones at the same time, but it had moved.\u00a0 It just moved everywhere!\u00a0 Her surgery was over eight and half hours long.\u00a0 It just got so many places.\u00a0 They cut out everything they could possibly cut out of her and still keep her going.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that first week of surgery that we had\u201496 percent of those who have this type of cancer\u2014do not survive to the fifth anniversary of diagnosis.\u00a0 That\u2019s why the fifth anniversary has been so critical to us.\u00a0 We\u2019re right at four years and 11 months, at this point.\u00a0 Only 4 percent survive to the fifth anniversary.\u00a0 We quickly saw that we were facing an enormous battle here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How in the world have you handled it because you\u2019ve got all these trips to MD Anderson, you\u2019ve got all this exploratory phone calls that you\u2019re making, trying to find out, \u201cWhat are the protocols?\u00a0 What are the options?\u201d\u00a0 One case, you wrote that you had 400 different protocols, or choices, before you, that you had to go through?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Over 500 now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How have you done it all?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the secret to doing so much is to do all of it poorly.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 That\u2019s my immediate response, but I have been <em>enormously<\/em> blessed.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been <em>enormously <\/em>blessed with tremendous support\u2014support I do not deserve.\u00a0 I cannot describe the scores of people who\u2019ve come alongside us to help.\u00a0 That\u2019s where\u2014I don\u2019t see how people make it without the body of Christ.\u00a0 Our church and the body of Christ at large\u2014oh my\u2014they\u2019ve made\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is rally time when someone goes through something like this; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 We are <em>forever<\/em> indebted.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the problems with going through a season like this is that many times we\u2019re not good receivers\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014of grace, and of gifts, and of people who want to give.\u00a0 Speak to that person who has a hard time receiving.\u00a0 What lesson have you learned about this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, this is fresh because we\u2019re in this battle.\u00a0 Now, Carol has good days\u2014she\u2019s up and around.\u00a0 Some days, she can\u2014there\u2019s days she gets up and drives the car.\u00a0 Most days, two out of three days, right now where we are in the journey, she\u2019s in bed until about 1:30, 2:30, 3:30 in the afternoon.\u00a0 I can almost set my clock by about 2:30 afternoon, after she\u2019s able to get up and has a level of productivity for a few hours.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust about a week or two\u2014maybe, two weeks ago, I suppose it\u2019s been now\u2014she\u2019d been in the hospital a fair amount lately, and we\u2019d just got out of the hospital.\u00a0 I walked in, and the washer had overflowed and flooded a bunch of carpet.\u00a0 I\u2019m not generally quite this emotional.\u00a0 You know, life has stuff, but I was just\u2014I really wanted\u2014I\u2019m not a crier\u2014but I really wanted to cry, right then.\u00a0 It was just, \u201cMan!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt wasn\u2019t that big of a deal, but given the dynamics of all that we were in the midst of\u2014the hospital stuff\u2014I just really wanted to cry but I pulled, and tugged, and finally got all the stuff, and got fans to start going.\u00a0 This same guy, who fixed up the backyard\u2014when he found out, he said, \u201cYou did not call me!\u00a0 I\u2019m here for you, and I\u2019m absolutely insulted that you did not call me because you have robbed me\u201d\u2014this is his language\u2014\u201cof the opportunity to serve in the way that God called me to serve.\u00a0 You kept me from doing it by you doing that when I told you that is my calling.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I realized\u2014I\u2019m trying to see it from his vantage point.\u00a0 I\u2019m slowly getting better at it; but I\u2019ve said to people over and over, \u201cI do not want\u2014when I ask you for this, I do not want you to ever feel trapped.\u00a0 This is not a forever thing.\u00a0 You can say, \u2018Okay, Jim, I can do it for two more weeks; or I can do it for today, but I can\u2019\u2014you have rights to take an exit ramp off this because this is a pretty long road so far.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve instructed our congregation because I\u2019ve learned a lot.\u00a0 People will say\u2014they\u2019ll call when somebody has a catastrophe; and they\u2019ll say, \u201cWell, let me know anything.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo, don\u2019t do that.\u00a0 Don\u2019t do that because that person will never call you back.\u00a0 What you need to do is be highly specific.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can offer something concrete.\u00a0 If a family has a catastrophe, some major event they go through, say specifically, \u201cI\u2019m able for the next two weeks to get your children to school each morning.\u00a0 I can pick them up at 7:30 and have them to class on time and pick them up each afternoon for the next two weeks.\u201d\u00a0 That way, it\u2019s very specific and the person will go, \u201cOh, thank you.\u00a0 Yes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlways be specific if you\u2019re able to, or maybe list, \u201cSome options I can do for your family:\u00a0 I can assist on this.\u00a0 I\u2019m good at organizing meals.\u00a0 I\u2019m good at having meals brought to you, maybe once each evening.\u00a0 Would that be enough?\u00a0 Tell me your tastes, your preferences.\u00a0 We\u2019ll organize meals over the next month just to cover that.\u201d\u00a0 That way, the person does not feel like, \u201cOh my, they are going to obligate themselves forever, and they\u2019ll want out of this.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s highly specific where the person doesn\u2019t have to think much because when you\u2019re hit with these things, your mind is not even clear\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, you don\u2019t know what you need, at that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly, because you don\u2019t know where the road is going\u2014all these bends and roads you are going to take\u2014I didn\u2019t know we\u2019d end up in MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.\u00a0 Now, we went a lot of other places, too.\u00a0 We went to Oasis of Hope Hospital in Tijuana, Mexico\u2014wonderful, wonderful place.\u00a0 We went to the Yeh Center in Upland California, up in the LA area.\u00a0 Then, we\u2019ve had wonderful physicians, right there in San Diego, in traditional care, but all\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt MD Anderson\u2014the number of people in Houston who meet us at airports and get us back to the airport\u2014it\u2019s absolutely amazing!\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know all these needs.\u00a0 So, if people can be as specific as they are able to when they help a family catastrophe, it\u2019s very, very appreciated.\u00a0 <br><br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to take you back to what you called your knot-hole moment\u2014that point where, in the midst of this diagnosis\u2014the awareness that the doctors were saying, \u201cThis is grim.\u201d\u00a0 You came to a point where you said, \u201cWhatever happens, I will not doubt God\u2019s love.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve a friend of mine who is a young woman in her late 20\u2019s\u2014lost her mom a year and a half ago\u2014still wrestles with anger toward God for taking Mom early.\u00a0 She was just with some other friends who had lost a sister in an accident.\u00a0 The first question for them was, \u201cHow do you deal with your anger toward God?\u201d\u00a0 That knot-hole moment is critical.\u00a0 A lot of people get hung up and never get through the knot hole.\u00a0 What\u2019s your counsel to them?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m going to probably report something in which I am in the minority on.\u00a0 I suspect most people don\u2019t accept this explanation\u2014and I certainly don\u2019t condemn anybody if they do.\u00a0 The framework, theologically, out of which I approach what we\u2019re in the midst of is not a framework out of which I believe that God said, \u201cOkay, I think we\u2019re going to afflict Jim and Carol with cancer right now because that\u2019s going to bring the best out of them.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is the prevailing view, and I understand why people say that.\u00a0 I don\u2019t condemn people who take that view.\u00a0 I don\u2019t condemn them at all.\u00a0 In fact, perhaps, they are right; and I\u2019m the one that\u2019s wrong.\u00a0 I take a little bit of different posture; and that is this: God created a perfect world.\u00a0 He\u2019s going to take us to a perfect world.\u00a0 In between is a pretty torn-up mess\u2014pain, heartache, suffering, sickness, disease, death, and a lot of tears.\u00a0 How did we get there?\u00a0 <br><br>We got there by Lucifer\u2019s sin, his rebellion.\u00a0 We got there by Adam and Eve\u2019s sin and our embryonic presence in that.\u00a0 We got there by even our contribution.\u00a0 If we want to blame Adam and Eve, we have walked in sin.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve contributed enough to the mess of this world, myself, in the wrong choices I have made.\u00a0 Now, you put all that together and the cumulative impact of the history of the world and the entire population walking the pathway of sin more than righteousness; and we have a mess.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, the blame, to me, is not on God, who created a perfect world but was so secure, who allowed us to have the option of choice; and we chose badly.\u00a0 My anger for cancer, and heartache, and suffering is the enemy.\u00a0 My anger is the evil one.\u00a0 I\u2019ve kept appropriate anger, appropriately channeled.\u00a0 I don\u2019t blame God.\u00a0 When His full ways are followed, we had a perfect world.\u00a0 When His full ways will be followed, we will have a perfect world.\u00a0 That\u2019s what He envisions.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tConsequently, I don\u2019t find myself in a posture of blaming God.\u00a0 The only moment, in this whole journey I\u2019ve had with some real, severe angst\u2014that went pretty deep for a little while\u2014I was speaking in Washington D.C.\u00a0 It was a church just a few blocks\u2014I think eight blocks or less\u2014from the Capitol.\u00a0 Sitting on the front row, I was the next speaker.\u00a0 The guy in front of me was speaking.\u00a0 He reported, \u201cI have come through cancer\u2014been in remission.\u201d\u00a0 Well, my wife has been in remission\u2014I don\u2019t know how many times it\u2019s come back.\u00a0 It depends on how you define remission, quite frankly.\u00a0 Following one potential definition, the cancer\u2019s probably come back for the sixth time.\u00a0 The first remission was fairly long.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe nature of primary peritoneal is that it\u2014is its remissions get shorter, and shorter, and shorter until they are almost nonexistent.\u00a0 If we can call Carol\u2019s remission\u2014sometimes they use the label, even, \u201cpartial remission\u201d\u2014if the disease is in stable condition, which it is as of last week according to MRI; but I think probably it\u2019s come back six times in this process.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was sitting and listening to this guy speaking in Washington D.C., right before I was going to speak\u2014he was reporting this remission.\u00a0 \u201cHow long have you been in remission?\u201d\u2014the crowd clapped and cheered.\u00a0 For a nanosecond, I went, \u201cWait a minute, God!\u00a0 I\u2019m here.\u00a0 Hello!\u00a0 Do you not see Jim and Carol in San Diego?\u00a0 What\u2019s this guy\u2014what\u2019s he getting it for?\u201d\u2014for a nanosecond.\u00a0 Then, I realized the words I have heard from my father\u2014my father is deceased now\u2014but for my whole life was, \u201cBe thankful for what you do have, rather than what you don\u2019t have.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the midst of this battle, I blame disease, heartache, suffering, sickness, and disease on the enemy and the cumulative impact of Adam and Eve and all our participation in that.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got that as the foundation piece for me.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t address all the complexities and issues of the sovereignty of God and His power and might.\u00a0 I recognize that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut my view of miracles and healings is that every time we hear of a healing and a miracle\u2014and we\u2019re still standing in line for ours.\u00a0 We\u2019re still anticipating.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t given up at all.\u00a0 We\u2019re not discouraged.\u00a0 I\u2019m very deeply concerned, but I\u2019m not discouraged.\u00a0 When a miracle breaks through into the present tense, I believe that\u2019s the hand of the Father reaching into the future, dragging it into the present, dropping it there, and saying, \u201cHere, I want you to get a taste of what it\u2019s going to be like when I fully have restored everything to what it\u2019s going to be.\u201d\u00a0 These are hors d'oeuvres of the main course yet to come.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, this is the fact that it has not hit us yet in the fullness.\u00a0 One person made the case to me the other day\u2014said, \u201cJim, you\u2019ve had a whole series of sub-miracles,\u201d and we actually have, if I look at it that way.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t had the biggie\u2014the final breakthrough that I\u2019m really longing for\u2014to see her well here and now; but at the same time, when God does those, He\u2019s just tugging the future into the present to give us a glimpse when, \u201cI\u2019m fully in charge, and people are obeying Me, walking in My ways, in the full righteousness and wholeness.\u201d\u00a0 I envision that\u2019s the way it\u2019s going to be.\u00a0 That stirs great hope in my heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I hear you saying is\u2014you maintain your courage and not get discouraged\u2014is, really, a snapshot of what Paul\u2014what he really preceded the passage I started today\u2019s broadcast with.\u00a0 In 2 Corinthians, Chapter 4, he says, verse 16, \u201cSo, we do not lose heart.\u00a0 Though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day.\u00a0 For this slight, momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen.\u00a0 For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we look, now, at what we see; and this is perishable, but there is an imperishable.\u00a0 There is a place where there will be no more sorrow, suffering, grief, no more angst, pain.\u00a0 It\u2019s that hope, I think, that keeps us going.\u00a0 What I see in your eyes, right now, that keeps you going\u2014wanting to serve Him, be faithful to Christ, and go through this valley with your wife, and maintain your relationship with God, and with her, and with your family, and your community of believers.\u00a0 That\u2019s how you do it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know when you and Barbara have been walking in a valley yourself or when you\u2019ve talked to other couples who have been there, one of the books that you have recommended to them is Jerry Sittser\u2019s book called <em>A Grace
