You saw the movie, <em>Fireproof<\/em>; right?\u00a0 Remember the scene in the movie where the car is stuck on the train tracks, and the train is coming?\u00a0 As that scene was being filmed, Alex and Stephen Kendrick got an opportunity to see that God really is <em>Jehovah Jireh<\/em>, the God who provides.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Films are very expensive.\u00a0 We were spending $5 or $6,000, an hour, on all the rented equipment.\u00a0 So, we started praying.\u00a0 As we\u2019re praying, we\u2019re thinking, \u201cHow can we fix this as fast as possible because we\u2019re burning daylight?!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe <em>house<\/em> that was the closest to the tracks, where we were filming\u2014this elderly gentleman is just standing on the porch, watching us.\u00a0 He moseys on over.\u00a0 He sees us struggling with this car; and he says, \u201cYou guys having problems?\u201d\u00a0 We said, \u201cYes, sir, we have to move this car on and off the tracks; and our pulley system is not working.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cWhat you need is a forklift.\u201d\u00a0 We said, \u201cThat would be awesome, sir.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI\u2019ll go get mine.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me ask you this, \u201cWhat are the odds, in a town of 2,000 people, the man closest to where we were filming has an operational forklift, and is at home, and is nice enough to let us use it for free?\u00a0 What are those odds?!\u201d\u00a0 <\/em>cruise because you got to\u2014you had the privilege of interviewing Stephen and Alex Kendrick, who are, really, the co-producers and directors of <em>Courageous<\/em>, the movie.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The movie, <em>Courageous<\/em>, <em>Fireproof<\/em>, <em>Facing the Giants<\/em>, and <em>Flywheel<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re kind of a cult figure with that whole deal.\u00a0 You were the one who first pointed this out to me.\u00a0 You\u2019re such a movie mogul.\u00a0 I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What it is\u2014now that I\u2019ve been involved in directing films\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Stepping Up<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the new <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video resource, I thought that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kind of felt like you were on an equal\u2014with <em>Courageous<\/em>?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014it would be good to have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think we\u2019ll do a straw poll on that one on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was fun to have with us on the 2012 <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise, Alex and Stephen Kendrick, who came along, just for the cruise.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They heard about the event.\u00a0 They said, \u201cWe\u2019d like to come.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cBring our brides and get a little R&amp;R.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They needed it because this was right after <em>Courageous<\/em> had come out, and they\u2019d been busy for a chance to interview them, and talk about their background, and how they got into films, in the first place, and what they are working on right now.\u00a0 We thought our listeners might want to hear a September\u2014what was the date?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thirtieth.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 September 30<sup>th<\/sup>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thirtieth, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Opening weekend\u2014any idea how opening weekend\u2014ended up with $34 \u00bd million.\u00a0 It\u2019s funny because <em>Sony<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, our distributor, still looks at us and scratches their head and says, \u201cYou know, you have no A-list stars.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got no big budget.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got no significant eye candy in the movie.\u00a0 This shouldn\u2019t be working.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us about 75 languages.\u00a0 I know the distributor\u2019s not going, \u201cWe need to get this into 75 languages.\u201d\u00a0 You guys are saying that; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 One thing we\u2019re grateful for is the Lord led us to partner with <em>Provident Films<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, and they are owned by <em>Sony<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting because the Gospel is in all of our movies; and then, lots of biblical truths are incorporated in that.\u00a0 But because <em>Sony<\/em> is the distributor, it goes to countries that are not open to Christian missionaries.\u00a0 It goes to Muslim countries, Communist countries, all of those countries.\u00a0 [Cheering]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was funny.\u00a0 There was a missionary on a Muslim airline\u2014you know, overseas.\u00a0 He\u2019s sitting on this Muslim airline, and he looks around.\u00a0 He thinks he\u2019s the only American on there\u2014he\u2019s a Christian.\u00a0 They start showing <em>Fireproof<\/em>, and he\u2019s looking around wondering if these people realize what kind of movie they are watching\u2014going, \u201cHow did this get on a Muslim airline?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, he called us later to say, \u201cI don\u2019t know how this happened.\u201d\u00a0 We don\u2019t know how it happened either.\u00a0 I mean, praise God!\u00a0 He\u2019s doing all this for cruise line\u2014including this one.\u00a0 Cruise lines are showing it, and airlines are showing these films.\u00a0 The Lord has opened a door that we could not have opened.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just, this week, had somebody send me a link to a <em>YouTube<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> clip of a four-minute movie, put together by an 18-year-old in my city, that\u2019s got some special effects\u2014that I\u2019m going, \u201cHow did that kid do that?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is amazing to see\u2014he\u2019s a young man.\u00a0 He\u2019s a Christian young man.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing to see what\u2019s starting to happen, in terms of film making.\u00a0 I know you get a lot of calls from folks all over the country saying, \u201cOur church is thinking about this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What\u2014the technical quality of the films and seeing it grow\u2014and your films have grown in technical quality.\u00a0 Each one has been technically better than the last one, but that\u2019s really secondary to what\u2019s the story saying, how is the story, how compelling is it as a story, and then, what is it leaving folks with?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m sure, as you are talking to these young film makers, you are saying, \u201cLook, get your chops down on the technical stuff; but the real issue is, as you said, \u2018Do you have the fear of the Lord?\u00a0 Do you have the story, down right?\u2019\u201d\u2014right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 You know\u2014and what was most important to us, when we sat there and we asked ourselves, \u201cIf we could have anything,\u201d\u2014more distribution, more budget, better acting, whatever it is\u2014\u201cwhat would we choose?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe agreed that we would choose the favor of God, above everything because if you have the favor of\u2014and this applies to everything we do, not just films\u2014if you have the favor of God on it, and God\u2019s able to do whatever He wants, and He gets the credit, then, it will do well or whatever He wants it to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>So, we said, \u201cIf that\u2019s true, we have to chase the favor of God more than anything else.\u201d\u00a0 The Lord is pleased when we seek Him and wait on Him.\u00a0 Then, He just picks the time, and He unloads on us the direction to go.\u00a0 Then, He starts opening doors we could not have opened without Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You guys have been friends with Jon Erwin.\u00a0 How many of you saw <em>October Baby<\/em> on the\u2014[Clapping]\u2014okay.\u00a0 I know you had some conversation with him about that film.\u00a0 When you see a movie like that get made, come out, and get a chance to watch it, what\u2019s your response to that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019re grateful that there are other guys who we are locking shields with.\u00a0 We\u2019re not in competition with Jon.\u00a0 When he came on the set for <em>Courageous<\/em>, he was bringing some incredible skills in cinematography.\u00a0 We knew he wanted to make movies, and we started pouring into him\u2014\u201cHere\u2019s how we make movies.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how we pray through things.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how we seek the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re just praising God that guys are honoring the Lord, and they are getting really good at it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing that the folks in Hollywood would like you to speed up the season of prayer cycle and get you churning it out a little more quickly?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but it doesn\u2019t work that way; does it?\u00a0 We\u2019re on the Lord\u2019s clock and His calendar; and you know the Lord knows what\u2019s best for us, too.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019ll say, \u201cYou spend nine months to a year pouring\u201d\u2014to write a script three months, to shoot it three months, to edit it three months.\u00a0 It seems like everything we do is in a three-month period.\u00a0 Then, the Lord says, \u201cWhen you\u2019re done, you spend a season\u2014you pour back into your families, you seek Me, and you come home from war for awhile.\u00a0 Then, when you\u2019re ready, I\u2019m going to send you back.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you\u2019re in a season of prayer.\u00a0 Now, do you have a target in mind, like, \u201cWe think we\u2019ll probably start working on a script about this time\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the Lord stirs our hearts about various things; you know?\u00a0 A military plot\u2014a plot about senior adults becoming the patriarchs of their families\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s where I could come in; right?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 A mental hospital, you know?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Like a biography of George Muller, or if you know who he is\u2014we\u2019re going back and forth, going, \u201cLord, what do You want us to do?\u201d\u00a0 Right now, He\u2019s saying, \u201cYou seek Me for awhile.\u00a0 You seek Me for awhile.\u00a0 You rest in Me for awhile, pour into your wives and your kids\u2014then, I\u2019ll show you.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s <em>always<\/em> been faithful to show us what\u2019s next.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell me about your interaction with the folks in Hollywood, who are mostly interested in what that gross is at the end of the film.\u00a0 How do they\u2014do they understand this market?\u00a0 Are they starting to get it?\u00a0 What\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 They totally don\u2019t get any of it.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t make sense to them.\u00a0 What we\u2019ve learned is the world, oftentimes, is motivated by fear, and greed, and pride.\u00a0 There is so much fear in Hollywood, so much pride.\u00a0 There\u2019s so much\u2014people are worried that they\u2019re not going to be cool tomorrow, even though they are cool today\u2014that somebody else is going to beat them, or somebody else is going to cut their job away from them.\u00a0 There\u2019s just that whole mentality in the world.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut in our situation, even on our sets, people don\u2019t understand it.\u00a0 We\u2019ll have some non-Christians, who are operating equipment on our sets.\u00a0 They walk on our sets; and there is prayer going on, there\u2019s love, there\u2019s unity, there\u2019s Scripture.\u00a0 They say, \u201cThe vibe here is really, really good.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s just a new environment for them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the Hollywood world, in fact, after <em>Fireproof<\/em>\u2014the weekend after <em>Fireproof<\/em> came out, Alex got a phone call from a Hollywood reporter.\u00a0 Tell them what happened, Alex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, he said, \u201cWho the *** are you?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI don\u2019t even know you guys exist.\u201d\u00a0 Then, he said, \u201cI study and analyze every movie that comes along.\u00a0 We kind of know what it\u2019s going to do, and we track them.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou guys came so far under the radar.\u00a0 All of a sudden, I open up the paper, and this movie is number four in the nation\u2014that I\u2019ve never even heard of.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cWho are you?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cWell, we\u2019re a church in south Georgia.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou\u2019re a church!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cWell, where\u2019d you get your actors?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, they\u2019re church members.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cThey\u2019re what?\u201d\u00a0 He recognized Kirk Cameron; but everybody else he was like, \u201cWhat?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cMovies aren\u2019t supposed to do this well.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cDo you know how many people, who went to film school, and are out here mentoring under Hollywood people\u2014they\u2019ve got millions of dollars, and they\u2019re making movies that can\u2019t get to the screen.\u201d\u00a0 By the way, you don\u2019t know this\u2014but an average of 600 features are made, every year.\u00a0 You hear about the 20 or 30 that were blockbusters\u2014that is what you hear about.\u00a0 You don\u2019t hear about the 540 that bombed because they hardly ever come up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are fighting for screens.\u00a0 They are fighting for DVD, and pay-per-view, and they can\u2019t get in there.\u00a0 So, a <em>church<\/em> in south Georgia becomes number four in the nation with <em>Fireproof<\/em>\u2014and <em>Courageous<\/em>, for that matter\u2014and they are looking at, \u201cHow did this happen?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s why we\u2019re saying the Lord can open doors no one else can open.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are we getting to a point where some Christian-themed movies are going to be coming out once a month, do you think?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think we\u2019re moving in the direction where we\u2019ll see more.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to be going to San Antonio next week, and there are hundreds of Christian filmmakers that are going to be there.\u00a0 They are up and coming.\u00a0 This next generation is growing, and they are learning quickly.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re seeing more getting produced.\u00a0 We\u2019re seeing\u2014but again, you see more good ones being produced, and you see a lot of ones that don\u2019t need to be made being produced, too.\u00a0 So, it\u2019s going to be both ends.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 You still have a lot of young guys that\u2014they even come up to us, when we go to these places, and say, \u201cMan, I\u2019ve studied film, I\u2019ve got a camera, and I\u2019m ready to do what you guys are doing.\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re just thinking, \u201cWow!\u201d\u00a0 You know, the technical aspect is 10 percent of this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and learning how to\u2014the spiritual maturity Stephen was talking about.\u00a0 We get lots of counsel, guys.\u00a0 We get lots of counsel.\u00a0 We pray a long time.\u00a0 We take our time, let these stories marinate, and say, \u201cLord, would You make them what You want them?\u201d\u00a0 We do re-edits.\u00a0 Matter of fact, the script went through four or five\u2014six\u2014revisions.\u00a0 Then, the edit of the movie went through five revisions before you see what\u2019s on the screen.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe don\u2019t rush it, and we do not assume we know everything.\u00a0 You get <em>lots<\/em> of counsel.\u00a0 These guys that come in, and they\u2019ve never made a feature, and they\u2019re over-confident.\u00a0 They are thinking because they know how to get good, beautiful images and run a camera, that they can make a great film.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just think, \u201cGuys, slow down.\u00a0 Slow down.\u00a0 Are you seeking the Lord?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, yes, we prayed.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cYou prayed, or you <em>are <\/em>praying?\u201d\u2014because there\u2019s a difference\u2014seeking the Lord; or, \u201cYes, we asked God to bless this.\u201d\u00a0 By the way, we tell them, \u201cGod is not your employee.\u00a0 He does not work for you.\u00a0 <em>You<\/em> work for the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, reverse those things.\u00a0 You seek the Lord until you know what He\u2019s telling you to do.\u00a0 Don\u2019t assume, \u201cGod, this is what I want to do.\u00a0 I just need Your blessing.\u00a0 Here we go!\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!\u00a0 Let\u2019s go, God.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not who He is!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we learned that.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re trying to help the next generation.\u00a0 There\u2019s some talented guys coming along, but we need prayer because this is such an influential avenue.\u00a0 There are not enough of us out there utilizing it for the Kingdom\u2014for the Lord.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re trying to help the next generation come along.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, and everybody is fighting for screen space.\u00a0 There\u2019s only so much of that.\u00a0 You can only get five or six movies a weekend that are going to come out and stick.\u00a0 For Hollywood to say, \u201cWe\u2019re going to go with the Christian one instead of this one from Sundance\u2014that tested well.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEverybody who acts in your films\u2014are they all believers?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 So far they have been.\u00a0 In fact, if you\u2019ve seen <em>Courageous<\/em>, even the bad, gang guys are really strong believers.\u00a0 They\u2019re Sunday school teachers in their churches.\u00a0 They love the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJavier\u2014the guy who played Javier\u2014have you ever heard of Ricky?\u00a0 You like Javier?\u00a0 [Clapping]\u00a0 If you\u2019ve ever heard of Ricky Martin, who is this good-looking\u2014he was really huge back in the day when he was singing.\u00a0 Well, Robert Amaya was the next Ricky Martin.\u00a0 He\u2019d been signed by\u2014who was the record company?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Universal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Universal signed him, trained him up, and recorded the album.\u00a0 He was about to come out as this new, cool, sexy, Hispanic singer who could sing in English and Spanish.\u00a0 He had all the talent and everything else; but right at the same time, the Lord was doing a work in his heart, drawing him to Himself.\u00a0 The Lord killed that whole vision.\u00a0 They had the album recorded and everything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, that album venture went bankrupt, or whatever, and he just got stuck.\u00a0 Now, what happened during that time, is the Lord killed his vision, and he began to grow in the Lord.\u00a0 Now, he loves Jesus with all of his heart.\u00a0 The Lord has placed him back, through this role\u2014now, he\u2019s beloved all over the world, in a sense, because of his role as Javier.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 He had a scene in <em>October Baby<\/em>, and he\u2019s got two more movies lined up now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the Lord is now opening the door for him to do several features.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us about the Snake King scene.\u00a0 [Clapping]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know what?\u00a0 This is what we did because Stephen and I\u2014we know we\u2019re not that funny.\u00a0 We\u2019re sitting there thinking, \u201cLord, we need some humor that most people would think is funny.\u201d\u00a0 We started praying, and praying, and praying.\u00a0 Anything that\u2019s funny in the movie is because God blessed it because we don\u2019t know.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe prayed for an idea that would be funny, and the Lord gave us the Snake King scene.\u00a0 It seemed like every time we told somebody, that they\u2019d start laughing about it.\u00a0 \u201cOkay, let\u2019s shoot this and see if it works.\u201d\u00a0 Because the good thing about editing is if something doesn\u2019t work, you can always just take it out of the movie.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we shot it and it worked\u2014and partially thanks to Robert Amaya\u2019s wonderful comedic acting\u2014you know\u2014it worked.\u00a0 We are thankful to the Lord.\u00a0 We pray for humor that\u2019s not offensive but that everyone would think is funny.\u00a0 That\u2019s just our prayer strategy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The same is true with the \u201cWho\u2019s on first\u201d scene that you guys put together, where he\u2019s saying, \u201cMy name\u2019s Javier.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI prayed for Javier\u201d\u2014yes, that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think I wrote the Snake King scene, and he wrote that \u201cWho\u2019s on first\u201d scene.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was funny because we had another guy\u2014we were about to cast another guy and his wife in the role of Javier and Carmen.\u00a0 We were this close.\u00a0 Alex and I had already decided, \u201cYes, it\u2019s good enough; you know?\u201d\u00a0 The other person on our casting team said, \u201cNo, I don\u2019t feel good about it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have a peace about it.\u00a0 Let\u2019s cast\u2014let\u2019s check out this guy, Robert Amaya.\u201d\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know him.\u00a0 So, we fly in Robert.\u00a0 Tell them what happened in the casting session with you, Alex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, first, when he came in and we were running lines together\u2014we were running some of the scenes together\u2014I could <em>no<\/em>t make it through a scene without laughing.\u00a0 He just had me in stitches.\u00a0 Finally, I said, \u201cI can\u2019t take this.\u201d\u00a0 Some people have a gift of humor, and other people don\u2019t.\u00a0 Robert has it.\u00a0 As you know, from the movie, he can be sentimental.\u00a0 He can pull at your heart strings; and then, he can have you laughing so hard.\u00a0 It was fun to play the straight guy next to his humor.\u00a0 Yes, he was a blessing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You do have some folks, behind the scenes, who are tradesmen, who don\u2019t know Christ; but boy, they get a dose of it over six, to eight, to ten weeks; don\u2019t they?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, in fact, there\u2019s\u2014our sound guy, when we shot the gang-beating scene in <em>Courageous<\/em>\u2014when they are beating the guys\u2014in between takes, T.C. Stallings was sharing his testimony with all those young, black, teenage boys that were in the gang and telling them, \u201cYou need to live for Christ.\u00a0 You need to live for Christ.\u201d\u00a0 Then, they\u2019d yell, \u201cAction;\u201d and he\u2019d act mean again.\u00a0 But our sound guy is standing there, with a microphone over all of that.\u00a0 At the end of us shooting that scene, he gave his life to Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, isn\u2019t that cool?\u00a0 [Clapping]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay, who else has got a question?\u00a0 Right down here in the middle, we\u2019ve got one.\u00a0 Emily, if you\u2019ll bring it all the way down here.\u00a0 There we go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Man:<\/strong>\u00a0 Gentleman, how do you handle success; and how do you counter that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re married.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 No, we have good wives, too.\u00a0 That is a great question.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 If you think about it, the Lord has reminded us of this\u2014every famous person, every famous actor or musician\u2014even the talented guys that have been around here\u2014they all have a season.\u00a0 That season, at some point or another, will come to an end.\u00a0 Just because you think, \u201cHey, we\u2019re on top right now.\u201d\u00a0 No, we\u2019re not going to stay there; and we know that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, as much fruit as the Lord gives us\u2014however long we\u2019re here on the stage, may we reflect the Lord and may God use us; but the minute that we say, \u201cHey, this is about us.\u00a0 We\u2019re pretty good,\u201d and start thinking more of ourselves than we should\u2014what does the Lord do?\u00a0 He\u2019ll knock your legs out from under you, and we don\u2019t want to end up as a casualty, where you don\u2019t end well.\u00a0 We want to end well!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re keeping each other accountable.\u00a0 We have accountability partners around us saying, \u201cGuys, remember, God can do amazing things in your life; but at any given time, He also has the ability to pull that rug from under you if you dishonor Him,\u201d because it\u2019s not about us.\u00a0 We know we have a season.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how long that season is, but one day that season\u2019s going to come.\u00a0 The Jon Erwins are coming up right behind us, and they are going to make better movies than we\u2019re making.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just preached, last Sunday, in the Book of Judges.\u00a0 Israel fell into rebellion after times of prosperity and success.\u00a0 It is just as spiritually dangerous\u2014maybe more spiritually dangerous\u2014for things to be going right in your life than it is for you to be in the middle of adversity.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 We tell people that the more time you spend with us, the less impressed you\u2019ll be us and the more impressed you\u2019ll be with the God that we serve; you know?\u00a0 The truth is\u2014if you do a Bible study on pride in Scripture\u2014it\u2019s very eye-opening how much God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.\u00a0 It has helped us to do that because it says in the New Testament, \u201cIf a man thinks himself to be something when he\u2019s nothing, he just deceives himself.\u201d\u00a0 Well, we\u2019re nothing; and the Lord is everything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Being able to hold each other accountable, being able to have wives that speak the truth into our lives, pastors who speak the truth into our lives\u2014but there is also a good, healthy dose of the fear of the Lord that should always accompany success\u2014that we realize that if we get prideful, or greedy, or distracted, or let our guard down and the enemy causes us to fall morally\u2014anything else\u2014so many people have fallen.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you look at David, the man after God\u2019s own heart, he\u2019s writing the Psalms\u2014all this stuff\u2014and this guy blows it.\u00a0 Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, blows it when he let his guard down.\u00a0 Samson, the strongest man who ever lived, blows it when he let his guard down.\u00a0 We all need the Lord every day.\u00a0 We need to be poor in spirit before Him saying, \u201cGod, I need Thee every hour.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve <em>Fireproof<\/em>; right?\u00a0 Remember the scene in the movie where the car is stuck on the train tracks, and the train is coming?\u00a0 As that scene was being filmed, Alex and Stephen Kendrick got an opportunity to see that God really is <em>Jehovah Jireh<\/em>, the God who provides.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Films are very expensive.\u00a0 We were spending $5 or $6,000, an hour, on all the rented equipment.\u00a0 So, we started praying.\u00a0 As we\u2019re praying, we\u2019re thinking, \u201cHow can we fix this as fast as possible because we\u2019re burning daylight?!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe <em>house<\/em> that was the closest to the tracks, where we were filming\u2014this elderly gentleman is just standing on the porch, watching us.\u00a0 He moseys on over.\u00a0 He sees us struggling with this car; and he says, \u201cYou guys having problems?\u201d\u00a0 We said, \u201cYes, sir, we have to move this car on and off the tracks; and our pulley system is not working.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cWhat you need is a forklift.\u201d\u00a0 We said, \u201cThat would be awesome, sir.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI\u2019ll go get mine.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me ask you this, \u201cWhat are the odds, in a town of 2,000 people, the man closest to where we were filming has an operational forklift, and is at home, and is nice enough to let us use it for free?\u00a0 What are those odds?!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <\/em>cruise because you got to\u2014you had the privilege of interviewing Stephen and Alex Kendrick, who are, really, the co-producers and directors of <em>Courageous<\/em>, the movie.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The movie, <em>Courageous<\/em>, <em>Fireproof<\/em>, <em>Facing the Giants<\/em>, and <em>Flywheel<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re kind of a cult figure with that whole deal.\u00a0 You were the one who first pointed this out to me.\u00a0 You\u2019re such a movie mogul.\u00a0 I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What it is\u2014now that I\u2019ve been involved in directing films\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Art of Marriage<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Stepping Up<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the new <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video resource, I thought that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kind of felt like you were on an equal\u2014with <em>Courageous<\/em>?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014it would be good to have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think we\u2019ll do a straw poll on that one on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>[Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was fun to have with us on the 2012 <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise, Alex and Stephen Kendrick, who came along, just for the cruise.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They heard about the event.\u00a0 They said, \u201cWe\u2019d like to come.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cBring our brides and get a little September\u2014what was the date?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thirtieth.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 September 30<sup>th<\/sup>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thirtieth, yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Opening weekend\u2014any idea how opening weekend\u2014ended up with $34 \u00bd million.\u00a0 It\u2019s funny because <em>Sony<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, our distributor, still looks at us and scratches their head and says, \u201cYou know, you have no A-list stars.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got no big budget.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got no significant eye candy in the movie.\u00a0 This shouldn\u2019t be working.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us about 75 languages.\u00a0 I know the distributor\u2019s not going, \u201cWe need to get this into 75 languages.\u201d\u00a0 You guys are saying that; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 One thing we\u2019re grateful for is the Lord led us to partner with <em>Provident Films<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, and they are owned by <em>Sony<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting because the Gospel is in all of our movies; and then, lots of biblical truths are incorporated in that.\u00a0 But because <em>Sony<\/em> is the distributor, it goes to countries that are not open to Christian missionaries.\u00a0 It goes to Muslim countries, Communist countries, all of those countries.\u00a0 [Cheering]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was funny.\u00a0 There was a missionary on a Muslim airline\u2014you know, overseas.\u00a0 He\u2019s sitting on this Muslim airline, and he looks around.\u00a0 He thinks he\u2019s the only American on there\u2014he\u2019s a Christian.\u00a0 They start showing <em>Fireproof<\/em>, and he\u2019s looking around wondering if these people realize what kind of movie they are watching\u2014going, \u201cHow did this get on a Muslim airline?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, he called us later to say, \u201cI don\u2019t know how this happened.\u201d\u00a0 We don\u2019t know how it happened either.\u00a0 I mean, praise God!\u00a0 He\u2019s doing all this for cruise line\u2014including this one.\u00a0 Cruise lines are showing it, and airlines are showing these films.\u00a0 The Lord has opened a door that we could not have opened.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just, this week, had somebody send me a link to a <em>YouTube<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> clip of a four-minute movie, put together by an 18-year-old in my city, that\u2019s got some special effects\u2014that I\u2019m going, \u201cHow did that kid do that?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is amazing to see\u2014he\u2019s a young man.\u00a0 He\u2019s a Christian young man.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing to see what\u2019s starting to happen, in terms of film making.\u00a0 I know you get a lot of calls from folks all over the country saying, \u201cOur church is thinking about this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What\u2014the technical quality of the films and seeing it grow\u2014and your films have grown in technical quality.\u00a0 Each one has been technically better than the last one, but that\u2019s really secondary to what\u2019s the story saying, how is the story, how compelling is it as a story, and then, what is it leaving folks with?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m sure, as you are talking to these young film makers, you are saying, \u201cLook, get your chops down on the technical stuff; but the real issue is, as you said, \u2018Do you have the fear of the Lord?\u00a0 Do you have the story, down right?\u2019\u201d\u2014right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 You know\u2014and what was most important to us, when we sat there and we asked ourselves, \u201cIf we could have anything,\u201d\u2014more distribution, more budget, better acting, whatever it is\u2014\u201cwhat would we choose?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe agreed that we would choose the favor of God, above everything because if you have the favor of\u2014and this applies to everything we do, not just films\u2014if you have the favor of God on it, and God\u2019s able to do whatever He wants, and He gets the credit, then, it will do well or whatever He wants it to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>So, we said, \u201cIf that\u2019s true, we have to chase the favor of God more than anything else.\u201d\u00a0 The Lord is pleased when we seek Him and wait on Him.\u00a0 Then, He just picks the time, and He unloads on us the direction to go.\u00a0 Then, He starts opening doors we could not have opened without Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You guys have been friends with Jon Erwin.\u00a0 How many of you saw <em>October Baby<\/em> on the\u2014[Clapping]\u2014okay.\u00a0 I know you had some conversation with him about that film.\u00a0 When you see a movie like that get made, come out, and get a chance to watch it, what\u2019s your response to that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019re grateful that there are other guys who we are locking shields with.\u00a0 We\u2019re not in competition with Jon.\u00a0 When he came on the set for <em>Courageous<\/em>, he was bringing some incredible skills in cinematography.\u00a0 We knew he wanted to make movies, and we started pouring into him\u2014\u201cHere\u2019s how we make movies.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how we pray through things.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how we seek the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re just praising God that guys are honoring the Lord, and they are getting really good at it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing that the folks in Hollywood would like you to speed up the season of prayer cycle and get you churning it out a little more quickly?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but it doesn\u2019t work that way; does it?\u00a0 We\u2019re on the Lord\u2019s clock and His calendar; and you know the Lord knows what\u2019s best for us, too.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019ll say, \u201cYou spend nine months to a year pouring\u201d\u2014to write a script three months, to shoot it three months, to edit it three months.\u00a0 It seems like everything we do is in a three-month period.\u00a0 Then, the Lord says, \u201cWhen you\u2019re done, you spend a season\u2014you pour back into your families, you seek Me, and you come home from war for awhile.\u00a0 Then, when you\u2019re ready, I\u2019m going to send you back.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you\u2019re in a season of prayer.\u00a0 Now, do you have a target in mind, like, \u201cWe think we\u2019ll probably start working on a script about this time\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the Lord stirs our hearts about various things; you know?\u00a0 A military plot\u2014a plot about senior adults becoming the patriarchs of their families\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s where I could come in; right?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 A mental hospital, you know?\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Like a biography of George Muller, or if you know who he is\u2014we\u2019re going back and forth, going, \u201cLord, what do You want us to do?\u201d\u00a0 Right now, He\u2019s saying, \u201cYou seek Me for awhile.\u00a0 You seek Me for awhile.\u00a0 You rest in Me for awhile, pour into your wives and your kids\u2014then, I\u2019ll show you.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s <em>always<\/em> been faithful to show us what\u2019s next.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell me about your interaction with the folks in Hollywood, who are mostly interested in what that gross is at the end of the film.\u00a0 How do they\u2014do they understand this market?\u00a0 Are they starting to get it?\u00a0 What\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 They totally don\u2019t get any of it.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t make sense to them.\u00a0 What we\u2019ve learned is the world, oftentimes, is motivated by fear, and greed, and pride.\u00a0 There is so much fear in Hollywood, so much pride.\u00a0 There\u2019s so much\u2014people are worried that they\u2019re not going to be cool tomorrow, even though they are cool today\u2014that somebody else is going to beat them, or somebody else is going to cut their job away from them.\u00a0 There\u2019s just that whole mentality in the world.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut in our situation, even on our sets, people don\u2019t understand it.\u00a0 We\u2019ll have some non-Christians, who are operating equipment on our sets.\u00a0 They walk on our sets; and there is prayer going on, there\u2019s love, there\u2019s unity, there\u2019s Scripture.\u00a0 They say, \u201cThe vibe here is really, really good.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s just a new environment for them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the Hollywood world, in fact, after <em>Fireproof<\/em>\u2014the weekend after <em>Fireproof<\/em> came out, Alex got a phone call from a Hollywood reporter.\u00a0 Tell them what happened, Alex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, he said, \u201cWho the *** are you?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI don\u2019t even know you guys exist.\u201d\u00a0 Then, he said, \u201cI study and analyze every movie that comes along.\u00a0 We kind of know what it\u2019s going to do, and we track them.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou guys came so far under the radar.\u00a0 All of a sudden, I open up the paper, and this movie is number four in the nation\u2014that I\u2019ve never even heard of.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cWho are you?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cWell, we\u2019re a church in south Georgia.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou\u2019re a church!\u201d\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cWell, where\u2019d you get your actors?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, they\u2019re church members.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cThey\u2019re what?\u201d\u00a0 He recognized Kirk Cameron; but everybody else he was like, \u201cWhat?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cMovies aren\u2019t supposed to do this well.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cDo you know how many people, who went to film school, and are out here mentoring under Hollywood people\u2014they\u2019ve got millions of dollars, and they\u2019re making movies that can\u2019t get to the screen.\u201d\u00a0 By the way, you don\u2019t know this\u2014but an average of 600 features are made, every year.\u00a0 You hear about the 20 or 30 that were blockbusters\u2014that is what you hear about.\u00a0 You don\u2019t hear about the 540 that bombed because they hardly ever come up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are fighting for screens.\u00a0 They are fighting for DVD, and pay-per-view, and they can\u2019t get in there.\u00a0 So, a <em>church<\/em> in south Georgia becomes number four in the nation with <em>Fireproof<\/em>\u2014and <em>Courageous<\/em>, for that matter\u2014and they are looking at, \u201cHow did this happen?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s why we\u2019re saying the Lord can open doors no one else can open.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are we getting to a point where some Christian-themed movies are going to be coming out once a month, do you think?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think we\u2019re moving in the direction where we\u2019ll see more.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to be going to San Antonio next week, and there are hundreds of Christian filmmakers that are going to be there.\u00a0 They are up and coming.\u00a0 This next generation is growing, and they are learning quickly.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re seeing more getting produced.\u00a0 We\u2019re seeing\u2014but again, you see more good ones being produced, and you see a lot of ones that don\u2019t need to be made being produced, too.\u00a0 So, it\u2019s going to be both ends.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 You still have a lot of young guys that\u2014they even come up to us, when we go to these places, and say, \u201cMan, I\u2019ve studied film, I\u2019ve got a camera, and I\u2019m ready to do what you guys are doing.\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re just thinking, \u201cWow!\u201d\u00a0 You know, the technical aspect is 10 percent of this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and learning how to\u2014the spiritual maturity Stephen was talking about.\u00a0 We get lots of counsel, guys.\u00a0 We get lots of counsel.\u00a0 We pray a long time.\u00a0 We take our time, let these stories marinate, and say, \u201cLord, would You make them what You want them?\u201d\u00a0 We do re-edits.\u00a0 Matter of fact, the script went through four or five\u2014six\u2014revisions.\u00a0 Then, the edit of the movie went through five revisions before you see what\u2019s on the screen.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe don\u2019t rush it, and we do not assume we know everything.\u00a0 You get <em>lots<\/em> of counsel.\u00a0 These guys that come in, and they\u2019ve never made a feature, and they\u2019re over-confident.\u00a0 They are thinking because they know how to get good, beautiful images and run a camera, that they can make a great film.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just think, \u201cGuys, slow down.\u00a0 Slow down.\u00a0 Are you seeking the Lord?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, yes, we prayed.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cYou prayed, or you <em>are <\/em>praying?\u201d\u2014because there\u2019s a difference\u2014seeking the Lord; or, \u201cYes, we asked God to bless this.\u201d\u00a0 By the way, we tell them, \u201cGod is not your employee.\u00a0 He does not work for you.\u00a0 <em>You<\/em> work for the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, reverse those things.\u00a0 You seek the Lord until you know what He\u2019s telling you to do.\u00a0 Don\u2019t assume, \u201cGod, this is what I want to do.\u00a0 I just need Your blessing.\u00a0 Here we go!\u00a0 Let\u2019s go!\u00a0 Let\u2019s go, God.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not who He is!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we learned that.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re trying to help the next generation.\u00a0 There\u2019s some talented guys coming along, but we need prayer because this is such an influential avenue.\u00a0 There are not enough of us out there utilizing it for the Kingdom\u2014for the Lord.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re trying to help the next generation come along.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, and everybody is fighting for screen space.\u00a0 There\u2019s only so much of that.\u00a0 You can only get five or six movies a weekend that are going to come out and stick.\u00a0 For Hollywood to say, \u201cWe\u2019re going to go with the Christian one instead of this one from Sundance\u2014that tested well.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEverybody who acts in your films\u2014are they all believers?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 So far they have been.\u00a0 In fact, if you\u2019ve seen <em>Courageous<\/em>, even the bad, gang guys are really strong believers.\u00a0 They\u2019re Sunday school teachers in their churches.\u00a0 They love the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJavier\u2014the guy who played Javier\u2014have you ever heard of Ricky?\u00a0 You like Javier?\u00a0 [Clapping]\u00a0 If you\u2019ve ever heard of Ricky Martin, who is this good-looking\u2014he was really huge back in the day when he was singing.\u00a0 Well, Robert Amaya was the next Ricky Martin.\u00a0 He\u2019d been signed by\u2014who was the record company?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Universal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Universal signed him, trained him up, and recorded the album.\u00a0 He was about to come out as this new, cool, sexy, Hispanic singer who could sing in English and Spanish.\u00a0 He had all the talent and everything else; but right at the same time, the Lord was doing a work in his heart, drawing him to Himself.\u00a0 The Lord killed that whole vision.\u00a0 They had the album recorded and everything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, that album venture went bankrupt, or whatever, and he just got stuck.\u00a0 Now, what happened during that time, is the Lord killed his vision, and he began to grow in the Lord.\u00a0 Now, he loves Jesus with all of his heart.\u00a0 The Lord has placed him back, through this role\u2014now, he\u2019s beloved all over the world, in a sense, because of his role as Javier.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 He had a scene in <em>October Baby<\/em>, and he\u2019s got two more movies lined up now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the Lord is now opening the door for him to do several features.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us about the Snake King scene.\u00a0 [Clapping]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know what?\u00a0 This is what we did because Stephen and I\u2014we know we\u2019re not that funny.\u00a0 We\u2019re sitting there thinking, \u201cLord, we need some humor that most people would think is funny.\u201d\u00a0 We started praying, and praying, and praying.\u00a0 Anything that\u2019s funny in the movie is because God blessed it because we don\u2019t know.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe prayed for an idea that would be funny, and the Lord gave us the Snake King scene.\u00a0 It seemed like every time we told somebody, that they\u2019d start laughing about it.\u00a0 \u201cOkay, let\u2019s shoot this and see if it works.\u201d\u00a0 Because the good thing about editing is if something doesn\u2019t work, you can always just take it out of the movie.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we shot it and it worked\u2014and partially thanks to Robert Amaya\u2019s wonderful comedic acting\u2014you know\u2014it worked.\u00a0 We are thankful to the Lord.\u00a0 We pray for humor that\u2019s not offensive but that everyone would think is funny.\u00a0 That\u2019s just our prayer strategy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The same is true with the \u201cWho\u2019s on first\u201d scene that you guys put together, where he\u2019s saying, \u201cMy name\u2019s Javier.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI prayed for Javier\u201d\u2014yes, that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think I wrote the Snake King scene, and he wrote that \u201cWho\u2019s on first\u201d scene.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was funny because we had another guy\u2014we were about to cast another guy and his wife in the role of Javier and Carmen.\u00a0 We were this close.\u00a0 Alex and I had already decided, \u201cYes, it\u2019s good enough; you know?\u201d\u00a0 The other person on our casting team said, \u201cNo, I don\u2019t feel good about it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have a peace about it.\u00a0 Let\u2019s cast\u2014let\u2019s check out this guy, Robert Amaya.\u201d\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know him.\u00a0 So, we fly in Robert.\u00a0 Tell them what happened in the casting session with you, Alex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, first, when he came in and we were running lines together\u2014we were running some of the scenes together\u2014I could <em>no<\/em>t make it through a scene without laughing.\u00a0 He just had me in stitches.\u00a0 Finally, I said, \u201cI can\u2019t take this.\u201d\u00a0 Some people have a gift of humor, and other people don\u2019t.\u00a0 Robert has it.\u00a0 As you know, from the movie, he can be sentimental.\u00a0 He can pull at your heart strings; and then, he can have you laughing so hard.\u00a0 It was fun to play the straight guy next to his humor.\u00a0 Yes, he was a blessing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You do have some folks, behind the scenes, who are tradesmen, who don\u2019t know Christ; but boy, they get a dose of it over six, to eight, to ten weeks; don\u2019t they?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, in fact, there\u2019s\u2014our sound guy, when we shot the gang-beating scene in <em>Courageous<\/em>\u2014when they are beating the guys\u2014in between takes, T.C. Stallings was sharing his testimony with all those young, black, teenage boys that were in the gang and telling them, \u201cYou need to live for Christ.\u00a0 You need to live for Christ.\u201d\u00a0 Then, they\u2019d yell, \u201cAction;\u201d and he\u2019d act mean again.\u00a0 But our sound guy is standing there, with a microphone over all of that.\u00a0 At the end of us shooting that scene, he gave his life to Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, isn\u2019t that cool?\u00a0 [Clapping]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay, who else has got a question?\u00a0 Right down here in the middle, we\u2019ve got one.\u00a0 Emily, if you\u2019ll bring it all the way down here.\u00a0 There we go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Man:<\/strong>\u00a0 Gentleman, how do you handle success; and how do you counter that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re married.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 No, we have good wives, too.\u00a0 That is a great question.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 If you think about it, the Lord has reminded us of this\u2014every famous person, every famous actor or musician\u2014even the talented guys that have been around here\u2014they all have a season.\u00a0 That season, at some point or another, will come to an end.\u00a0 Just because you think, \u201cHey, we\u2019re on top right now.\u201d\u00a0 No, we\u2019re not going to stay there; and we know that!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, as much fruit as the Lord gives us\u2014however long we\u2019re here on the stage, may we reflect the Lord and may God use us; but the minute that we say, \u201cHey, this is about us.\u00a0 We\u2019re pretty good,\u201d and start thinking more of ourselves than we should\u2014what does the Lord do?\u00a0 He\u2019ll knock your legs out from under you, and we don\u2019t want to end up as a casualty, where you don\u2019t end well.\u00a0 We want to end well!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re keeping each other accountable.\u00a0 We have accountability partners around us saying, \u201cGuys, remember, God can do amazing things in your life; but at any given time, He also has the ability to pull that rug from under you if you dishonor Him,\u201d because it\u2019s not about us.\u00a0 We know we have a season.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how long that season is, but one day that season\u2019s going to come.\u00a0 The Jon Erwins are coming up right behind us, and they are going to make better movies than we\u2019re making.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just preached, last Sunday, in the Book of Judges.\u00a0 Israel fell into rebellion after times of prosperity and success.\u00a0 It is just as spiritually dangerous\u2014maybe more spiritually dangerous\u2014for things to be going right in your life than it is for you to be in the middle of adversity.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 We tell people that the more time you spend with us, the less impressed you\u2019ll be us and the more impressed you\u2019ll be with the God that we serve; you know?\u00a0 The truth is\u2014if you do a Bible study on pride in Scripture\u2014it\u2019s very eye-opening how much God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.\u00a0 It has helped us to do that because it says in the New Testament, \u201cIf a man thinks himself to be something when he\u2019s nothing, he just deceives himself.\u201d\u00a0 Well, we\u2019re nothing;
