The passage in Ephesians, Chapter 5\u2014the one that talks about wives submitting to their husbands\u2014Voddie Baucham says a lot of people misunderstand what that passage is all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t say here that men are more valuable than women.\u00a0 In fact, let me just clear that up very quickly, if I may.\u00a0 There\u2019s an illustration here of the relationship between Jesus Christ and His church.\u00a0 Ladies, you get to play the one that was redeemed.\u00a0 We get to play the guy who got Monday edition.\u00a0 You know, the message we\u2019re going to hear part of today is not the kind of message you\u2019d expect to hear on the high seas aboard a cruise ship where you think everybody\u2019s going to keep everything light, and kind of fun, and friendly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019ve gotten some letters back from guests who came on the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em><em><sup>\u2122<\/sup><\/em> cruise who said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 This was so superior to our honeymoon.\u00a0 It went way beyond our expectations of what we thought this cruise would be about because we not only had fun\u201d\u2014but they had some serious teaching from the Scripture every day and a challenge, at the end, to really consider your mission as a couple.\u00a0 I had one guy say, \u201cWe\u2019ve been married 17 years and our honeymoon wasn\u2019t all that good.\u00a0 This topped everything.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThis was absolutely the best!\u201d\u00a0 I think it\u2019s for the very reason you\u2019re talking about, Bob.\u00a0 It\u2019s that we\u2019re not just talking about entertaining people.\u00a0 We\u2019re talking bout getting into the Scriptures and talking about becoming a follower of Christ and how that works its way out in a marriage and a family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We had our friend, Voddie Baucham, Message]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, we\u2019re going to cover a lot of ground tonight; but mainly, we\u2019re going to be looking at familiar passages in Ephesians, Chapter 5.\u00a0 In Ephesians, Chapter 5\u2014we know Ephesians, Chapter 5.\u00a0 We know verses 22-24\u2014wives and their responsibilities toward their husbands.\u00a0 We know verses 25 and following\u2014the husband and his responsibility toward his wife, but what we don\u2019t know is how that fits within the context of the book of Ephesians.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, if we don\u2019t know the <em>purpose<\/em> of Ephesians, Chapter 5, we will abuse it because if you don\u2019t know the purpose of a thing, you will eventually abuse it.\u00a0 So, this book of Ephesians\u2014let me first give you an overview and then explain.\u00a0 The book of Ephesians has two halves\u2014the first three chapters and the last three chapters.\u00a0 I don\u2019t just say that because there are six chapters and you sort of divide it in the middle.\u00a0 The first three chapters of the book are about orthodoxy\u2014or right believing.\u00a0 The last three chapters are about orthopraxy\u2014or right behaving.\u00a0 The first three chapters are about our calling.\u00a0 The last three chapters are about our conduct.\u00a0 The first three chapters are about indicatives; the last three chapters are about imperatives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first half of the book is about what Christ has done, on our behalf, for the Father\u2019s glory, through the cross.\u00a0 It\u2019s about who we are in Christ.\u00a0 Those are the indicatives\u2014they indicate who we are.\u00a0 The last three chapters are the imperatives.\u00a0 In the last three chapters, we get a picture of proper living, in light of and because of what Christ has accomplished on our behalf.\u00a0 Those are the imperatives.\u00a0 \u201cIndicative\u2014\u201d [holding up Bible]\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThis is the Bible.\u201d\u00a0 I am indicating what it is.\u00a0 \u201cImperative\u201d\u2014\u201cPick up the Bible,\u201d\u2014okay, telling me to do something with it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the first three chapters, we get those indicatives that tell us who we are because of what Christ has accomplished.\u00a0 In the last three chapters, we get the commands that are born out of those indicatives.\u00a0 It\u2019s important that we get this because we don\u2019t want to confuse what the Gospel requires with what the Gospel produces.\u00a0 What does the Gospel require?\u00a0 The Gospel requires repentance and faith.\u00a0 That\u2019s it.\u00a0 That\u2019s all the Gospel requires.\u00a0 People get uncomfortable when you talk like that.\u00a0 The Gospel just requires repentance and faith.\u00a0 \u201cNo, brother, there\u2019s got to be some obedience in there, too.\u201d\u00a0 No!\u00a0 That\u2019s what the Gospel produces.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Gospel <em>requires <\/em>repentance and faith.\u00a0 The Gospel <em>produces<\/em> obedience.\u00a0 If you confuse those things\u2014if you confuse what the Gospel requires and what the Gospel produces\u2014then you will be calling people to obey out of their <em>flesh<\/em> when the fact of the matter is that obedience is born of the Spirit.\u00a0 In other words, you lead people to works righteousness and pervert the very Gospel to which you were trying to call them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA second thing I want you to understand is that there are major overarching indicatives in the book of Ephesians.\u00a0 Paul gives them to us at the <em>end <\/em>of each of the first three chapters.\u00a0 It\u2019s those three overarching indicatives that help us understand the rest of the book of Ephesians.\u00a0 Let me give them to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first comes at the end of Chapter 1.\u00a0 Listen to this, beginning in verse 22:\u00a0 \u201cAnd He put all things under His feet and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.\u201d\u00a0 Here\u2019s the first major indicative if you want to understand the book of Ephesians\u2014this is first and foremost about Christ\u2019s headship over His church.\u00a0 Can you say that with me?\u00a0 \u201cChrist\u2019s headship over His church.\u201d\u00a0 One more time:\u00a0 What\u2019s this book about?\u00a0 \u201cChrist\u2019s headship over His church.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you want to understand all of the imperatives in the second half of the book, understand that they\u2019re rooted in this\u2014Christ\u2019s headship over His church.\u00a0 That\u2019s the message that Paul is trying to communicate:\u00a0 \u201cThis is what God has accomplished through the person and work of Christ, in order to establish Christ\u2019s headship over His church.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the point!\u00a0 That\u2019s the emphasis!\u00a0 That\u2019s what matters!\u00a0 You\u2019ll get this in a moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the second one\u2014at the end of Chapter 2.\u00a0 Go with me to verse 19:\u00a0 \u201cSo then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and members of the <em>household<\/em> of God, <em>built<\/em> on the <em>foundation<\/em> of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the <em>cornerstone<\/em>, in whom the whole <em>structure<\/em>, being joined together\u201d [emphasis added]\u2014You think he\u2019s trying to say something here\u2014all these building terms?!\u2014the whole structure being joined together\u2014\u201cgrows into a holy temple in the Lord; in Him you are also being built <em>together<\/em> into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. \u201d [emphasis added]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, first major indicative\u2014Christ\u2019s headship over His body.\u00a0 Here is the second one\u2014unity in Christ\u2019s body.\u00a0 Can we say that together?\u2014\u201cUnity in Christ\u2019s body.\u201d\u00a0 The first one is Christ\u2019s headship over His body; the second one is unity in Christ\u2019s body.\u00a0 Again, if you want to understand the second half and the imperatives, you have got to understand this:\u00a0 Number one\u2014Christ\u2019s headship over His body.\u00a0\u00a0 Number two\u2014is unity in Christ\u2019s body.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The third one comes at the end of Chapter 3.\u00a0 Now, at the end of Chapter 3, we have a doxology, which usually comes at the end of a letter; right?\u00a0 Paul, however, is letting you know that he has reached the end of the first half and the end of the indicative section.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe does the same thing in Romans.\u00a0 When he gets to the end of the indicative section, there\u2019s a doxology.\u00a0 In Romans, however, that comes in Chapter 11.\u00a0 Here, it comes at Chapter 3.\u00a0 Look with me, if you will, beginning in verse 20:\u00a0 \u201cNow to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work in us,\u201d\u00a0 <em>You might want to underline that!<\/em>\u2014\u201caccording to the power at work in us,\u201d\u00a0 The imperatives are about what we have been commanded and empowered to do because of the work that Christ has accomplished.\u00a0 \u201cto Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus, throughout all generations, forever and ever.\u00a0 Amen.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat is that about?\u2014the glory that the body gives to its head.\u00a0 The first overarching indicative\u2014Christ\u2019s headship over His body.\u00a0 The second one\u2014is unity in Christ\u2019s body.\u00a0 The third\u2014is about the glory that the body gives to its head.\u00a0 When we get to the second half of the book of Ephesians, Paul is reiterating these truths.\u00a0 He is calling us to obedience, based on these realities.\u00a0 We\u2019re almost ready to get to our text; but before we do, let me show you what happens in the second half.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, in the first half, there are all of these indicatives; and you don\u2019t find imperatives.\u00a0 You just find indicatives, all over the first half.\u00a0 You would think, in the second half, you would find all these imperatives and no indicatives\u2014not the case.\u00a0 In the second half, you find imperatives and indicatives.\u00a0 In the first half, you\u2019ve just got indicatives.\u00a0 In the second half, you have imperatives and indicatives.\u00a0 What do you think is more important\u2014indicatives or imperatives?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe indicatives are more important.\u00a0 They\u2019re <em>way more<\/em> important!\u00a0 Why?\u2014because you can only <em>do<\/em> the imperatives because of the indicatives.\u00a0 Look, for example, at what he does when he gets to Chapter 4:\u00a0 \u201cI, therefore,\u201d\u2014Therefore?\u00a0 What\u2019s that there for?\u00a0 It\u2019s there for Chapters 1 through 3:\u00a0 \u201cHere are all of these things that I\u2019ve told you about what Christ has done in you and for you.\u00a0 Now, <em>therefore<\/em>, in light of all those indicatives\u2014<em>therefore<\/em>\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI, therefore, a prisoner of the Lord, urge you to\u201d\u2014now he\u2019s telling you to do something\u2014\u201cwalk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit and the bond of peace\u201d.\u00a0 By the way, lest you forget that these imperatives are rooted and grounded in the indicatives, look at what he does in the next verse: \u201cThere <em>is<\/em> [emphasis added] one body\u201d\u2014he didn\u2019t say, \u201cGo, be one body.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThere is one body, one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all, through all, and in all.\u00a0 Grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ\u2019s gift.\u201d\u00a0 He says, by the way, \u201cI call you to unity.\u201d\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Remember the major indicative\u2014unity in Christ\u2019s body?\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI call you to walk in unity because He made you one.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, in light of that, come with me, now, to the familiar passage in Ephesians, Chapter 5.\u00a0 Let us begin here at verse 22 and put this together:\u00a0 \u201cWives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, His body, and is Himself its Savior.\u00a0 Now, as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their own husbands.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNotice, \u201cas to the Lord,\u201d \u201ceven as Christ,\u201d \u201cas the church submits to Christ.\u201d\u00a0 A wife\u2019s submission to her husband is about Christ\u2019s headship over His body, unity in Christ\u2019s body, and the glory that the body gives to its head.\u00a0 That\u2019s what your submission is about.\u00a0 Your submission is not about how you<em> feel<\/em> about your husband.\u00a0 You\u2019re not submitting to your husband because he\u2019s worthy of your submission.\u00a0 You\u2019re submitting to your husband, in spite of the fact that he will never be worthy of your submission.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShow me a woman who is waiting for her husband to be worthy of her submission, and I\u2019ll show you a woman who has no intention to submit.\u00a0 You submit to your husband \u201cas to the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 Your submission to your husband is a picture of your submission to Christ.\u00a0 If you are not submissive to your husband, you are <em>not<\/em> submissive to Christ!\u00a0 You don\u2019t have a man problem; you have a worship problem!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYes, but you just don\u2019t know my husband.\u201d\u00a0 No, but God does and He commanded you to submit to him.\u00a0 This is not about value; it\u2019s about order. It doesn\u2019t say here that men are more <em>valuable<\/em> than women.\u00a0 In fact, let me just clear that up very quickly, if I may.\u00a0 There\u2019s an illustration here of the relationship between Jesus Christ and His church.\u00a0 Ladies, you get to play the one that was redeemed.\u00a0 We get to play the guy who got killed!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA wife\u2019s submission to her husband is also an act of faith.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m just worried that if I submit to my husband\u2014\u201d Time out!\u00a0 I really don\u2019t need to hear what comes after that.\u00a0 Let me rephrase it for you.\u00a0 What you just said is, \u201cI\u2019m just worried that <em>if I obey God<\/em>, things will not go well for me.\u00a0 Therefore, I am <em>disobeying God<\/em> in hopes that my disobedience will bear the fruit of blessing in my life.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what universe you live in; but in the one that I live in, that\u2019s messed up!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNow as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit\u201d\u2014in things that are comfortable\u2014 [Laughter]\u2014in things that might not end badly\u2014\u201cin everything.\u201d\u00a0 Are there limits to this?\u00a0 Of course!\u00a0 Your husband cannot command what God forbids or forbid what God commands.\u00a0 Sure!\u00a0 Now, that we\u2019ve got that out of the way\u2014in everything.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \u201cYes, but my husband is not leading the way he\u2019s supposed to lead.\u201d\u00a0 Welcome to real life!\u00a0 \u201cIf my husband were leading in the way that he was supposed to lead, then I wouldn\u2019t have a problem following him.\u201d\u00a0 Right!\u2014and there wouldn\u2019t need to be a command.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut here\u2019s what else I know\u2014even if your husband led perfectly, you would rebel against it because that was the curse in the Garden.\u00a0 \u201cYes, well, what if my husband is not even being obedient to God?\u201d\u00a0 Isn\u2019t it great that there\u2019s a Bible verse for that?\u00a0 First Peter, Chapter 3, \u201cLikewise, wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the Word\u2014\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s in there!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy the way, when he says, \u201cLikewise, wives,\u201d do you ever wonder, \u201cLike what?\u201d\u00a0 If you go back to the previous chapter, and the previous paragraph, he\u2019s talking about slaves who have evil masters and how a slave, with an evil master, should submit, even to the evil master.\u00a0 It\u2019s after that that he says, \u201cLikewise, wives.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t write the mail; I just deliver it.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a <em>faith<\/em> issue.\u00a0 This is about the Gospel.\u00a0 How important is it to you that you see that picture of Christ\u2019s headship over His body, unity in Christ\u2019s body, and the glory that the body gives to its head?\u00a0 How much does that matter to you?\u00a0 Does it <em>matter<\/em> to you more than the comfort and ease you seek through your disobedience?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we have been listening to Part One of a message from Voddie Baucham, presented on the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise in 2012.\u00a0 It was kind of quiet, there in the ship\u2019s ballroom as we were listening\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a feeling it\u2019s probably pretty quiet in some cars and, maybe, on some headsets, listening to this broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me just say that we still have Part Two to come.\u00a0 That is where Voddie is going to talk to men about loving their wives as Christ loves the church.\u00a0 This message has some balance to it, but\u2014pretty strong stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is strong stuff.\u00a0 As I was sitting there listening to Voddie give that message, I thought, \u201cYou know, this would be a tough message for a woman, in this culture, to hear, if it was given by a woman.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But hearing it from a man\u2014it is interesting.\u00a0 I think for some women\u2014that makes it tough to hear.\u00a0 I would just say to the wife or the young lady who is listening to that and says, \u201cI don\u2019t like that!\u201d\u2014you know what?\u00a0 He didn\u2019t write it.\u00a0 He does deliver the mail.\u00a0 He\u2019s just trying to share with you what the Scriptures teach, in terms of how a marriage relationship between a husband and a wife\u2014how they\u2019re to complement each other and not compete with each other.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot about the Bible that causes the hair on the back of my neck to stand up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Laughing]\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You go, \u201cI don\u2019t like that part either!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As a man, absolutely!\u00a0 And yet, in this culture, Bob, I feel like we poisoned the stream about\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014four decades ago and really made it almost objectionable for a message like this to be preached by a pastor\u2014by a man\u2014to a mixed audience, at this point.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want you to hear me apologizing that we did it\u2014that\u2019s not my point.\u00a0 I want to recognize that, in this culture, we understand that it does go against the grain of what a lot of women are taught.\u00a0 All I would say is, \u201cIf you can find a better way for a marriage to work, I\u2019d like to see it.\u201d\u00a0 This passage, here\u2014along with the rest of Scripture\u2014really points out how two imperfect people can go the distance and how they can glorify God in the process.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Again, Part Two of the message but mainly, we\u2019re going to be looking at familiar passages in Ephesians, Chapter 5.\u00a0 In Ephesians, Chapter 5\u2014we know Ephesians, Chapter 5.\u00a0 We know verses 22-24\u2014wives and their responsibilities toward their husbands.\u00a0 We know verses 25 and following\u2014the husband and his responsibility toward his wife, but what we don\u2019t know is how that fits within the context of the book of Ephesians.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, if we don\u2019t know the <em>purpose<\/em> of Ephesians, Chapter 5, we will abuse it because if you don\u2019t know the purpose of a thing, you will eventually abuse it.\u00a0 So, this book of Ephesians\u2014let me first give you an overview and then explain.\u00a0 The book of Ephesians has two halves\u2014the first three chapters and the last three chapters.\u00a0 I don\u2019t just say that because there are six chapters and you sort of divide it in the middle.\u00a0 The first three chapters of the book are about orthodoxy\u2014or right believing.\u00a0 The last three chapters are about orthopraxy\u2014or right behaving.\u00a0 The first three chapters are about our calling.\u00a0 The last three chapters are about our conduct.\u00a0 The first three chapters are about indicatives; the last three chapters are about imperatives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first half of the book is about what Christ has done, on our behalf, for the Father\u2019s glory, through the cross.\u00a0 It\u2019s about who we are in Christ.\u00a0 Those are the indicatives\u2014they indicate who we are.\u00a0 The last three chapters are the imperatives.\u00a0 In the last three chapters, we get a picture of proper living, in light of and because of what Christ has accomplished on our behalf.\u00a0 Those are the imperatives.\u00a0 \u201cIndicative\u2014\u201d [holding up Bible]\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThis is the Bible.\u201d\u00a0 I am indicating what it is.\u00a0 \u201cImperative\u201d\u2014\u201cPick up the Bible,\u201d\u2014okay, telling me to do something with it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the first three chapters, we get those indicatives that tell us who we are because of what Christ has accomplished.\u00a0 In the last three chapters, we get the commands that are born out of those indicatives.\u00a0 It\u2019s important that we get this because we don\u2019t want to confuse what the Gospel requires with what the Gospel produces.\u00a0 What does the Gospel require?\u00a0 The Gospel requires repentance and faith.\u00a0 That\u2019s it.\u00a0 That\u2019s all the Gospel requires.\u00a0 People get uncomfortable when you talk like that.\u00a0 The Gospel just requires repentance and faith.\u00a0 \u201cNo, brother, there\u2019s got to be some obedience in there, too.\u201d\u00a0 No!\u00a0 That\u2019s what the Gospel produces.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Gospel <em>requires <\/em>repentance and faith.\u00a0 The Gospel <em>produces<\/em> obedience.\u00a0 If you confuse those things\u2014if you confuse what the Gospel requires and what the Gospel produces\u2014then you will be calling people to obey out of their <em>flesh<\/em> when the fact of the matter is that obedience is born of the Spirit.\u00a0 In other words, you lead people to works righteousness and pervert the very Gospel to which you were trying to call them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA second thing I want you to understand is that there are major overarching indicatives in the book of Ephesians.\u00a0 Paul gives them to us at the <em>end <\/em>of each of the first three chapters.\u00a0 It\u2019s those three overarching indicatives that help us understand the rest of the book of Ephesians.\u00a0 Let me give them to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first comes at the end of Chapter 1.\u00a0 Listen to this, beginning in verse 22:\u00a0 \u201cAnd He put all things under His feet and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.\u201d\u00a0 Here\u2019s the first major indicative if you want to understand the book of Ephesians\u2014this is first and foremost about Christ\u2019s headship over His church.\u00a0 Can you say that with me?\u00a0 \u201cChrist\u2019s headship over His church.\u201d\u00a0 One more time:\u00a0 What\u2019s this book about?\u00a0 \u201cChrist\u2019s headship over His church.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you want to understand all of the imperatives in the second half of the book, understand that they\u2019re rooted in this\u2014Christ\u2019s headship over His church.\u00a0 That\u2019s the message that Paul is trying to communicate:\u00a0 \u201cThis is what God has accomplished through the person and work of Christ, in order to establish Christ\u2019s headship over His church.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the point!\u00a0 That\u2019s the emphasis!\u00a0 That\u2019s what matters!\u00a0 You\u2019ll get this in a moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the second one\u2014at the end of Chapter 2.\u00a0 Go with me to verse 19:\u00a0 \u201cSo then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and members of the <em>household<\/em> of God, <em>built<\/em> on the <em>foundation<\/em> of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the <em>cornerstone<\/em>, in whom the whole <em>structure<\/em>, being joined together\u201d [emphasis added]\u2014You think he\u2019s trying to say something here\u2014all these building terms?!\u2014the whole structure being joined together\u2014\u201cgrows into a holy temple in the Lord; in Him you are also being built <em>together<\/em> into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. \u201d [emphasis added]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, first major indicative\u2014Christ\u2019s headship over His body.\u00a0 Here is the second one\u2014unity in Christ\u2019s body.\u00a0 Can we say that together?\u2014\u201cUnity in Christ\u2019s body.\u201d\u00a0 The first one is Christ\u2019s headship over His body; the second one is unity in Christ\u2019s body.\u00a0 Again, if you want to understand the second half and the imperatives, you have got to understand this:\u00a0 Number one\u2014Christ\u2019s headship over His body.\u00a0\u00a0 Number two\u2014is unity in Christ\u2019s body.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The third one comes at the end of Chapter 3.\u00a0 Now, at the end of Chapter 3, we have a doxology, which usually comes at the end of a letter; right?\u00a0 Paul, however, is letting you know that he has reached the end of the first half and the end of the indicative section.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe does the same thing in Romans.\u00a0 When he gets to the end of the indicative section, there\u2019s a doxology.\u00a0 In Romans, however, that comes in Chapter 11.\u00a0 Here, it comes at Chapter 3.\u00a0 Look with me, if you will, beginning in verse 20:\u00a0 \u201cNow to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work in us,\u201d\u00a0 <em>You might want to underline that!<\/em>\u2014\u201caccording to the power at work in us,\u201d\u00a0 The imperatives are about what we have been commanded and empowered to do because of the work that Christ has accomplished.\u00a0 \u201cto Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus, throughout all generations, forever and ever.\u00a0 Amen.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat is that about?\u2014the glory that the body gives to its head.\u00a0 The first overarching indicative\u2014Christ\u2019s headship over His body.\u00a0 The second one\u2014is unity in Christ\u2019s body.\u00a0 The third\u2014is about the glory that the body gives to its head.\u00a0 When we get to the second half of the book of Ephesians, Paul is reiterating these truths.\u00a0 He is calling us to obedience, based on these realities.\u00a0 We\u2019re almost ready to get to our text; but before we do, let me show you what happens in the second half.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, in the first half, there are all of these indicatives; and you don\u2019t find imperatives.\u00a0 You just find indicatives, all over the first half.\u00a0 You would think, in the second half, you would find all these imperatives and no indicatives\u2014not the case.\u00a0 In the second half, you find imperatives and indicatives.\u00a0 In the first half, you\u2019ve just got indicatives.\u00a0 In the second half, you have imperatives and indicatives.\u00a0 What do you think is more important\u2014indicatives or imperatives?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe indicatives are more important.\u00a0 They\u2019re <em>way more<\/em> important!\u00a0 Why?\u2014because you can only <em>do<\/em> the imperatives because of the indicatives.\u00a0 Look, for example, at what he does when he gets to Chapter 4:\u00a0 \u201cI, therefore,\u201d\u2014Therefore?\u00a0 What\u2019s that there for?\u00a0 It\u2019s there for Chapters 1 through 3:\u00a0 \u201cHere are all of these things that I\u2019ve told you about what Christ has done in you and for you.\u00a0 Now, <em>therefore<\/em>, in light of all those indicatives\u2014<em>therefore<\/em>\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI, therefore, a prisoner of the Lord, urge you to\u201d\u2014now he\u2019s telling you to do something\u2014\u201cwalk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit and the bond of peace\u201d.\u00a0 By the way, lest you forget that these imperatives are rooted and grounded in the indicatives, look at what he does in the next verse: \u201cThere <em>is<\/em> [emphasis added] one body\u201d\u2014he didn\u2019t say, \u201cGo, be one body.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThere is one body, one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all, through all, and in all.\u00a0 Grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ\u2019s gift.\u201d\u00a0 He says, by the way, \u201cI call you to unity.\u201d\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Remember the major indicative\u2014unity in Christ\u2019s body?\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI call you to walk in unity because He made you one.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, in light of that, come with me, now, to the familiar passage in Ephesians, Chapter 5.\u00a0 Let us begin here at verse 22 and put this together:\u00a0 \u201cWives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church, His body, and is Himself its Savior.\u00a0 Now, as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their own husbands.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNotice, \u201cas to the Lord,\u201d \u201ceven as Christ,\u201d \u201cas the church submits to Christ.\u201d\u00a0 A wife\u2019s submission to her husband is about Christ\u2019s headship over His body, unity in Christ\u2019s body, and the glory that the body gives to its head.\u00a0 That\u2019s what your submission is about.\u00a0 Your submission is not about how you<em> feel<\/em> about your husband.\u00a0 You\u2019re not submitting to your husband because he\u2019s worthy of your submission.\u00a0 You\u2019re submitting to your husband, in spite of the fact that he will never be worthy of your submission.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShow me a woman who is waiting for her husband to be worthy of her submission, and I\u2019ll show you a woman who has no intention to submit.\u00a0 You submit to your husband \u201cas to the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 Your submission to your husband is a picture of your submission to Christ.\u00a0 If you are not submissive to your husband, you are <em>not<\/em> submissive to Christ!\u00a0 You don\u2019t have a man problem; you have a worship problem!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYes, but you just don\u2019t know my husband.\u201d\u00a0 No, but God does and He commanded you to submit to him.\u00a0 This is not about value; it\u2019s about order. It doesn\u2019t say here that men are more <em>valuable<\/em> than women.\u00a0 In fact, let me just clear that up very quickly, if I may.\u00a0 There\u2019s an illustration here of the relationship between Jesus Christ and His church.\u00a0 Ladies, you get to play the one that was redeemed.\u00a0 We get to play the guy who got killed!\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA wife\u2019s submission to her husband is also an act of faith.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m just worried that if I submit to my husband\u2014\u201d Time out!\u00a0 I really don\u2019t need to hear what comes after that.\u00a0 Let me rephrase it for you.\u00a0 What you just said is, \u201cI\u2019m just worried that <em>if I obey God<\/em>, things will not go well for me.\u00a0 Therefore, I am <em>disobeying God<\/em> in hopes that my disobedience will bear the fruit of blessing in my life.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what universe you live in; but in the one that I live in, that\u2019s messed up!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNow as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit\u201d\u2014in things that are comfortable\u2014 [Laughter]\u2014in things that might not end badly\u2014\u201cin everything.\u201d\u00a0 Are there limits to this?\u00a0 Of course!\u00a0 Your husband cannot command what God forbids or forbid what God commands.\u00a0 Sure!\u00a0 Now, that we\u2019ve got that out of the way\u2014in everything.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 \u201cYes, but my husband is not leading the way he\u2019s supposed to lead.\u201d\u00a0 Welcome to real life!\u00a0 \u201cIf my husband were leading in the way that he was supposed to lead, then I wouldn\u2019t have a problem following him.\u201d\u00a0 Right!\u2014and there wouldn\u2019t need to be a command.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut here\u2019s what else I know\u2014even if your husband led perfectly, you would rebel against it because that was the curse in the Garden.\u00a0 \u201cYes, well, what if my husband is not even being obedient to God?\u201d\u00a0 Isn\u2019t it great that there\u2019s a Bible verse for that?\u00a0 First Peter, Chapter 3, \u201cLikewise, wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the Word\u2014\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s in there!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy the way, when he says, \u201cLikewise, wives,\u201d do you ever wonder, \u201cLike what?\u201d\u00a0 If you go back to the previous chapter, and the previous paragraph, he\u2019s talking about slaves who have evil masters and how a slave, with an evil master, should submit, even to the evil master.\u00a0 It\u2019s after that that he says, \u201cLikewise, wives.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t write the mail; I just deliver it.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a <em>faith<\/em> issue.\u00a0 This is about the Gospel.\u00a0 How important is it to you that you see that picture of Christ\u2019s headship over His body, unity in Christ\u2019s body, and the glory that the body gives to its head?\u00a0 How much does that matter to you?\u00a0 Does it <em>matter<\/em> to you more than the comfort and ease you seek through your disobedience?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Studio]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we have been listening to Part One of a message from Voddie Baucham, presented on the <em>Love Like You Mean It<\/em> marriage cruise in 2012.\u00a0 It was kind of quiet, there in the ship\u2019s ballroom as we were listening\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a feeling it\u2019s probably pretty quiet in some cars and, maybe, on some headsets, listening to this broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me just say that we still have Part Two to come.\u00a0 That is where Voddie is going to talk to men about loving their wives as Christ loves the church.\u00a0 This message has some balance to it, but\u2014pretty strong stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is strong stuff.\u00a0 As I was sitting there listening to Voddie give that message, I thought, \u201cYou know, this would be a tough message for a woman, in this culture, to hear, if it was given by a woman.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But hearing it from a man\u2014it is interesting.\u00a0 I think for some women\u2014that makes it tough to hear.\u00a0 I would just say to the wife or the young lady who is listening to that and says, \u201cI don\u2019t like that!\u201d\u2014you know what?\u00a0 He didn\u2019t write it.\u00a0 He does deliver the mail.\u00a0 He\u2019s just trying to share with you what the Scriptures teach, in terms of how a marriage relationship between a husband and a wife\u2014how they\u2019re to complement each other and not compete with each other.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot about the Bible that causes the hair on the back of my neck to stand up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Laughing]\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You go, \u201cI don\u2019t like that part either!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As a man, absolutely!\u00a0 And yet, in this culture, Bob, I feel like we poisoned the stream about\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014four decades ago and really made it almost objectionable for a message like this to be preached by a pastor\u2014by a man\u2014to a mixed audience, at this point.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want you to hear me apologizing that we did it\u2014that\u2019s not my point.\u00a0 I want to recognize that, in this culture, we understand that it does go against the grain of what a lot of women are taught.\u00a0 All I would say is, \u201cIf you can find a better way for a marriage to work, I\u2019d like to see it.\u201d\u00a0 This passage, here\u2014along with the rest of Scripture\u2014really points out how two imperfect people can go the distance and how they can glorify God in the process.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Again, Part Two of the message is still ahead.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to hear what Voddie had to say to husbands, before we\u2019re all done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA quick reminder that Voddie\u2019s going to be joining us, again, Valentine\u2019s week 2013, onboard the Carnival <em>Imagination<\/em> as we head to Key West and to Cozumel.\u00a0 Along with Voddie Baucham, and Dennis and Barbara Rainey, my wife Mary Ann and me\u2014Priscilla Shirer is going to be joining us, Dr. Eric Mason is going to be onboard with us, Sara Groves, Denver &amp;
