To pursue?","meta_box":{"show_notes":"","transcript_url":"https:\/\/transcript.familylifetoday.com\/fl2012-06-13.pdf","transcript_content":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Guys, are you trying to build a stronger, more intimate relationship with your spouse and it just doesn\u2019t seem to be working well?\u00a0 Here is Justin Buzzard with some help.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t want men just to try harder\u2014most guys are struggling in dating their wives.\u00a0 They think the answer is, \u201cJust try harder.\u201d\u00a0 The answer is, \u201cJesus\u201d.\u00a0 The answer is that a man needs to come to a fresh awareness of Who Jesus is and what Jesus has done.\u00a0 What Jesus does is Jesus makes men new.\u00a0 Jesus makes husbands new.\u00a0 He makes married men new because marriage, again, exposes the best and the worst about us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, June 13<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 So, how does thinking about Who Jesus is and what He\u2019s done have any impact on your marriage relationship?\u00a0 We\u2019re going to explore that subject today.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I have had some guys, who have heard people say\u2014and I think we\u2019ve all heard this now\u2014\u201cYou need to date your wife, even after you get married.\u00a0 You need to be dating your wife.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve just had some guys who\u2019ve said, \u201cLook, life is really busy.\u00a0 You\u2019re just laying another thing on me.\u00a0 That\u2019s not the magic formula\u2014\u2018Just date your wife and everything is going to be okay.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 How would you respond to a guy?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How important is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>[Laughter]\u00a0 He\u2019s not read the playbook.\u00a0 He\u2019s not read the playbook.\u00a0 If you go to Ephesians 5, Paul spells it out pretty clearly.\u00a0 The assignment of a husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the Church.\u00a0 How did He do that?\u00a0 He gave Himself up.\u00a0 He died for it.\u00a0 He surrendered Himself for it.\u00a0 A man is to take the next step, after he dies to self, and give himself up for his wife to nourish her and cherish her.\u00a0 When you read those commands of Scripture, Bob, how can a man kick it into neutral?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe can\u2019t, but a lot of guys\u2014and I wrote about this a number of years ago.\u00a0 In fact, it was the first book that Barbara and I wrote, <em>Building Your Mate\u2019s Self-Esteem<\/em>.\u00a0 I wrote in the book that a lot of guys feel like when marriage occurs, the prize is won and the competition is over.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, you know what?\u00a0 I\u2019ve got news for you.\u00a0 The competition is not over.\u00a0 It\u2019s not over for your wife\u2019s heart.\u00a0 There are other men who could win your wife\u2019s heart.\u00a0 It\u2019s not over for your wife\u2019s growth of following Jesus Christ and how she is to be nurtured and cherished in her spiritual life to be a better Christ follower, be a woman of the Word.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to tell you on the weekend\u2014this past weekend\u2014I had to sit and look with a great deal of satisfaction as Barbara sat there on our couch with this big <em>Kay Arthur Study Bible<\/em> that weighs about 143 pounds.\u00a0 She had all of her multi-colored pens out that she\u2019s done from <em>Precept<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> <em>Bible Studies<\/em> for the past ten years.\u00a0 My wife is a woman of the Word.\u00a0\u00a0 Because of that, she\u2019s become a better woman of God and following Jesus Christ.\u00a0 That is the assignment for a man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, did I cause all that?\u00a0 No, but I didn\u2019t discourage it.\u00a0 Hopefully, I created some hunger and some saltiness in her soul for wanting to know God more by how I lived; but a man\u2019s assignment is to love his wife as Christ loved the Church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you\u2019re saying that this \u201cdate your wife\u201d idea is not just take her out for a nice dinner so you can check off the checkbox and say, \u201cOkay, I did that\u2014now, onto the next thing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, not at all.\u00a0 In fact, let\u2019s let the author of a new book called <em>Date Your Wife<\/em>, Justin Buzzard\u2014let\u2019s let him answer that question.\u00a0 Justin, welcome back to the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Good to be here, guys.\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s a mistake that I think many men make\u2014that they think that dating their wives means take her on a date night once a week\u2014check it off your box.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s done.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not, at all, the message of this book.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI define <em>Date Your Wife<\/em> out of Genesis 2:15.\u00a0 God gave the first man, the first husband, a job description to work and to keep the Garden\u2014to cause life to happen in that Garden, to cause flourishing to happen as they took care of what was going on in that Garden.\u00a0 God gave that man that job before He gave him a wife.\u00a0 So, when God gave the first man a wife, he knew what to do with that wife\u2014to care for her, to guard her so the flourishing would happen.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA man\u2019s call as a husband is exactly what you said, \u201cTo love your wife as Christ loved the Church.\u201d\u00a0 That means, you don\u2019t hold back in any area of life.\u00a0 It\u2019s a comprehensive call to cause flourishing to happen for your wife and for your marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You can\u2019t kick it into neutral.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you can\u2019t kick it into neutral.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A man\u2019s got to keep pursuing his wife\u2014keep loving her, guarding her, cultivating her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I like the way you said it in the book\u2014and you just said it here\u2014\u201cBring life to her.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bring life to her.\u00a0 You talk about the \u201ccompetition hasn\u2019t stopped\u201d.\u00a0 Well, a man needs to identify the main enemy behind his marriage, and that\u2019s Satan.\u00a0 Satan hates marriages.\u00a0 Satan wants to destroy marriages.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was thinking about this the other day\u2014the Scripture\u2019s most important treatment on marriage\u2014Ephesians 5.\u00a0 Well, what comes right after that?\u2014Scripture\u2019s most important treatment on spiritual warfare, Ephesians 6.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think that\u2019s an accident, there, in Paul\u2019s writing.\u00a0 I think we have a real enemy who is actively trying to do all he can to destroy marriages and to destroy men.\u00a0 A man needs to know he really has a real battle there.\u00a0 So, the mission wasn\u2019t\u2014didn\u2019t just finish when he got married.\u00a0 It\u2019s just started.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You talk about the theme of war.\u00a0 You talk about two forms of going to war, on behalf of your wife\u2014having an air war and a ground war.\u00a0 Where does a man start?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, a man starts with this: Once a man has been made new by Jesus and has kind of made a new resolve to love his wife\u2014to date his wife\u2014he needs to come up with a plan for that.\u00a0 It\u2019s one thing to have great ideas or to have nice vows you say on your wedding day; but if you don\u2019t have a plan for how you are going to implement those, nothing\u2019s going to happen.\u00a0 So, a man needs to plan.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think a man needs to come up with both an air war and a ground war for how he\u2019s going to date his wife.\u00a0 The air war\u2014that is the \u201cbig picture\u201d.\u00a0 That is looking at the big picture of your marriage.\u00a0 That\u2019s when your B-52 bombers are going to fly overhead and drop kind-of-big artillery, to help advance the cause of your marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI asked guys to look at their marriage in sort of one-year chunks.\u00a0 What my wife and I do\u2014our year sort of operates August through July.\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of the academic calendar\u2014that\u2019s how kind of the church works for us.\u00a0 So, that\u2019s how we think of our years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEvery August, I look at\u2014from 30,000 feet\u2014our marriage.\u00a0 I think, \u201cHey, how can I put together a plan, an air-war plan, for our marriage?\u201d\u00a0 That involves, for us, one big family vacation we take each year\u2014which involves, lots of times, just my wife and me\u2014that involves my wife getting away for two days, just herself, to have a personal retreat.\u00a0 We plan that out, and nothing competes with that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>The thing is guys don\u2019t do this.\u00a0 Guys are used to coming up with big plans for their business, big plans for their next fishing trip\u2014whatever it is they do\u2014but they\u2019ve never been taught about the importance of doing this for their marriage.\u00a0 So, that is the air war.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, the ground war\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, before you move to the ground war, I just want to put a plug in here for a man taking his wife to the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>--I mean, if you want to sit and soak in the Scripture, together, as a couple.\u00a0 If this isn\u2019t the very best investment in your marriage, we\u2019ll give you your registration fee back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt works.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 We\u2019ve been doing these things for over 36 years.\u00a0 It\u2019s a team of people that are trained.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that they\u2019re perfect, but the blueprints are.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great way, as you talk about the air war, to do something really spectacular for your marriage.\u00a0 For a lot of couples, it\u2019s like a second honeymoon.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Every man ought to be thinking about something like that\u2014that\u2019s going to happen once a year, whether it\u2019s our event or something else.\u00a0 What\u2019s your marriage investment\u2014your marriage deposit\u2014that you are going to make this year?\u00a0 Be intentional about it.\u00a0 What happens with most guys is they go five or six years\u2014nothing.\u00a0 There\u2019s been no investment, no deposit, no\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014building into the marriage.\u00a0 They\u2019re\u2014that\u2019s like trying to drive a car and never getting the oil changed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Most of this is common sense; right, guys?\u00a0 It\u2019s just common sense that is forgotten; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA guy is still operating with that common sense in his business or in his career; but he\u2019s forgotten that common sense that was there when he first began meeting this girlfriend, dating her, heading towards the altar.\u00a0 He was thinking this way then, but he quit thinking this way once he got married because\u2014exactly what we\u2019re talking about\u2014he thought that he already hit the finish line with dating his wife, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, if the air war is the 30,000-foot level, where you\u2019re looking big picture and thinking strategically about a long period of time, I guess the ground game is kind of that day-to-day?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 When I talk air war with guys, I say, \u201cThink about your marriage in a one- year chunk.\u00a0 Look at it, sort of monthly\u2014walk through each month, and look at your marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I talk ground war, I say look at one week in your marriage.\u00a0 How is your week set up?\u00a0 How is your time ordered?\u00a0 What kind of time are you getting with your wife?\u00a0 What kind of breaks are you giving to your wife?\u00a0 That\u2019s big in our house right now with three boys, ages five and under.\u00a0 For me, to love my wife right now, in this season, one of the best things I can do for her is to give her breaks because she spends all day chasing\u2014like our home is just so full of testosterone.\u00a0 It\u2019s just nuts.\u00a0 There are four boys there.\u00a0 It\u2019s crazy.\u00a0 It smells.\u00a0 So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Four boys\u2014your three sons and you?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m one of the boys.\u00a0 I\u2019m the worst of them.\u00a0 So, for me to give her breaks\u2014where she gets out of the house, where she goes for a run, where she goes to a coffee shop, has time alone\u2014that\u2019s one of the best ways I can love her, right now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have a guy look at his week and I just have a guy look at his typical day because your days get busy.\u00a0 The bills come, the dishes need to get done, crisis happens.\u00a0 I just have a guy think about, \u201cHey, what can I do, just today, to take something off my wife\u2019s plate or to express love to her?\u201d\u00a0 Practical things that guys need to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of things you talk about in your book was giving your wife an evening out with her girlfriends.\u00a0 I did that kind of by accident one time. It was like, \u201cI can\u2019t believe I\u2019ve never thought of that before!\u201d\u00a0 My wife came back energized.\u00a0 A lot of times we forget how draining children can be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis past week, our oldest daughter Ashley, who has five boys, 12 and under\u2014so, there\u2019s some serious testosterone there\u2014plus, two other foster-care children, one boy and one girl.\u00a0 There are seven children in their family.\u00a0 She came by our house on Sunday afternoon, just her.\u00a0 It was magnificent.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were able to talk.\u00a0 She was energized.\u00a0 I got a feeling, when her husband got her back on Sunday night, he got back a wife who was energized about their relationship, about life, and about her family.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that she doesn\u2019t like her boys and her husband, but everybody needs a break from time to time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I think part of that call to date your wife is we\u2019re called, as men, to be students of our wives.\u00a0 You know, the women that we marry\u2014they are different women now.\u00a0 Life\u2019s changed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTaylor was\u2014when I married her, she was 23.\u00a0 There were no kids.\u00a0\u00a0 She\u2019s 31 now.\u00a0 There are kids, and her needs are different\u2014what energizes her is different.\u00a0 Men need to stay alive to that\u2014studying their wives and knowing how to best love them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have something you did that goes beyond the air war and the ground war\u2014and I\u2019m not sure in what category this really belongs; but because of your vocation, you were able to take a sabbatical\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014a 30-day sabbatical, where you put 20,000 miles on your car.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Yes, I don\u2019t\u2014yes\u2014somehow\u2014I went to the church I worked at, as a youth pastor, at the time.\u00a0 I was\u2014what?\u00a0 This was for our one-year anniversary.\u00a0 I was 24, I think.\u00a0 Somehow, I convinced them to give me 30 days off.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t have a sabbatical policy, but I\u2019d been working really hard.\u00a0 I think I was just persuasive, and they gave me 30 days off.\u00a0 Yes, we took a road trip.\u00a0 We drove from San Francisco to the Arctic Ocean and back.\u00a0 It was incredible.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The Arctic Ocean?!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 The Arctic Ocean\u2014that\u2019s far away.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The last\u2014was it 400 miles on a gravel road?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or 500?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, the last 400 miles were a dirt, gravel road; but we threw our mattress in the back of my Toyota<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> pickup, and our down comforter, and put some clothes back there, and just headed out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Slept in the back of the pickup?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Slept in the back of the pickup; yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are one romantic guy.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You said Taylor is really not a road\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 She hates being in cars.\u00a0 She\u2019s not a road-trip deal; but something happened here, where she just thought it was exciting.\u00a0 Somehow, I convinced her that this would be incredible.\u00a0 We look back on it as the greatest trip of our lifetime.\u00a0 We made a movie of this whole thing\u2014have a lot of pictures.\u00a0 We did a lot of backpacking on the trip, ran into grizzly bears.\u00a0 It was incredible.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, in this mega air war\/ground war extravaganza, if I were to ask you to clip out a snapshot of your favorite moment, which one would you clip out?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there was a lot of sex, and that was great; but I won\u2019t talk about that.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Let\u2019s see.\u00a0 I think it was during\u2014we were backpacking in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, which most people don\u2019t know about because it\u2019s in the middle of nowhere.\u00a0 You\u2019ve said you\u2019ve been there though, Dennis.\u00a0 It takes a long time to get there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re backpacking; and there were grizzly bears, just everywhere.\u00a0 I had a big Rambo knife strapped to my backpack, and we were scared as heck.\u00a0 We\u2019re hiking on a glacier, grizzly bears everywhere; and we just prayed that Jesus would save us from grizzly bears.\u00a0 For whatever reason, that\u2019s one of the moments that stands out to us because we knew our lives were in danger.\u00a0 I loved it.\u00a0 It was great!\u00a0 Grizzly bears\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, so, you\u2019re saying for a husband to really date his wife well, he needs to take her off for a 30-day\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in a pickup truck.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I make the disclaimer in the book that you have to figure out how your wife is wired.\u00a0 My wife really likes adventure and risks, and somehow I convinced her to go with me on this trip.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was the motivation?\u00a0 Was it just, \u201cI want to get away and have a vacation,\u201d or was there something in your marriage you were trying accomplish?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 What we did for our first year of marriage is\u2014we took what we call a one-year honeymoon.\u00a0 We took a great, big honeymoon to Hawaii, right when we first got married\u2014went there for, I don\u2019t know, ten days or whatever.\u00a0 Then, for our first year of marriage, we got away for two nights, every month, once a month.\u00a0 We just found cheap ways to do it.\u00a0 We would borrow friends\u2019 houses, we\u2019d go backpacking, we\u2019d go to San Francisco, we\u2019d go to Monterey, we would go to Yosemite.\u00a0 We got away for those two weekends.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe found that that just cemented an incredible foundation in our marriage as we got away from the busyness of life in Silicon Valley, as we got away from our normal stresses, pressures, and relationships and got away together.\u00a0 We laid this incredible foundation.\u00a0 We just saw a lot of fruit come from that.\u00a0 At the end of our one year of doing that, we thought, \u201cHey, let\u2019s see if there\u2019s a way that we can get away for a month.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t hurt to ask.\u00a0 So, let\u2019s ask.\u00a0 Let\u2019s see if I can get this time off and do it.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI encourage couples to do what they can to get some time away from their normal routines\u2014just like what you guys are talking about with the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em> conferences, where you are able just to set new ground in your marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, no doubt about it.\u00a0 You finally got to what I thought the book was going to be about at the very end.\u00a0 Do you know what I\u2019m talking about?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s the 100\u2014what\u2019s it called?\u2014100 ideas of how to date your wife?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, with your permission, we\u2019ll see if we can do this.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to put all 100 on our website\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014but I what I would like you to do is pick out your top five, that you can repeat here on the air, from the 100, just to give them a little sampling.\u00a0 As you\u2019re looking at that, your book really is about much more than just the pragmatics of a fun, romantic evening.\u00a0 It really is calling men to step up, men to deny themselves, men to court their wives.\u00a0 It\u2019s really about the Christian life and the Gospel really being implanted in a man\u2019s soul and passing it on to his wife.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 We wanted the book to be really robust, theologically, yet, very easy to read and very, very practical because, I think, there\u2019s not a lot out there, for men, that\u2019s soaked in the Scriptures but is highly practical and motivates them to take immediate action with what they are learning.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, yes, in the back of the book, we put 100 ideas for dating your wife.\u00a0 I put those 100 ideas there to help jump-start husbands\u2014their own thinking about their wives.\u00a0 So, these are 100 ideas I put out there; but I hope, that as men read these, they\u2019ll come up with their own ideas.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, some of these ideas were contributed by\u2014I assume\u2014buddies or <em>Facebook<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> friends or something.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the last ten\u2014I wrote the first 90.\u00a0 The last ten came from people who were using my website, and that\u2019s how it came.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, what\u2019s your five you want to share?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, gosh.\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m just looking at this list\u2014Hey, you highlighted some stuff in here!\u00a0 There\u2019s\u2014did you steal some of these and use these with your wife?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 Look at this.\u00a0 Your wife thought those were your ideas and not mine.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not yet.\u00a0 By the way, one of his ideas\u2014while he\u2019s still looking is\u2014he calls Taylor, his wife, his girlfriend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, sometimes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She loves to be called your girlfriend; but they really know how you\u2019re wired\u2014they know the best about you, they know the worst about you.\u00a0 They will call you on your junk\u2014hold you accountable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes;
