There are a lot of young men today who were never given a vision for marriage.\u00a0 As a result, they\u2019re just not getting married.\u00a0 Justin Buzzard says moms and dads can do something about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 My two oldest boys\u2014if you walked up to them and asked them right now, \u201cWhat do you have to do to get married?\u201d they would tell you three things.\u00a0 They would say, \u201cFirst, love Jesus; second, get a job; third, pick a girl who loves Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey just know, in our home, that this is this grand, exciting thing that awaits them\u2014following Christ; having a challenging job and being able to provide (having a calling that God\u2019s put on their life\u2014a <\/em>Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 Dennis\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, I hadn\u2019t told you about this; but it was a couple of weekends ago that Barbara and I were home, and I looked out the window\u2014we live in the woods.\u00a0 I looked out and there was this <em>giant <\/em>bird, perched on one of our pine trees.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What kind?\u00a0 Like a hawk?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I wasn\u2019t sure.\u00a0 So, I got the binoculars; and I looked at it and I go, \u201cWhat in the <em>world<\/em> is that thing?\u201d\u00a0 Ultimately, it flew.\u00a0 It was a buzzard!\u00a0 It was a buzzard!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there something dead in the yard?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was wondering if he was thinking that I was; you know?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I could never find anything, and I thought as I introduce today\u2019s guest on the show\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, you\u2019re doing that?\u00a0 Oh, this is terrible!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014we\u2019ve got a Buzzard, perched across the table from me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was probably\u2014I\u2019m thinking of all of the introductions of guests that you\u2019ve done in almost 20 years of radio\u2014that\u2019s one of the worst.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He deserved it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is one of the worst introductions!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He deserved it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why does he deserve it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, he\u2019s already made a couple of cracks at me and at you, too, as far as that goes.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 So, I just thought, \u201cHow can I introduce Justin Buzzard?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just would like to apologize, on behalf of Dennis.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but you have a six-foot, two-inch buzzard here, across from you.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a two-foot buzzard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Six-foot, two\u2014So, be careful!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Welcome to the broadcast, Justin.\u00a0 He is the lead pastor of Garden City Church in San Jos\u00e9, California; married for more than seven years; has three sons.\u00a0 He has written a book\u2014to give you an idea about the guy\u2014I think it\u2019s the only book we\u2019ve ever had here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> where you\u2019re just pointing at the guy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s a good cover.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is a good cover.\u00a0 It says, \u201cDate Your Wife\u201d!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we\u2019re giving him a job, right away, with the cover\u2014telling him what to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had a phenomenal first date with your\u2014I guess she was not your wife at that point\u2014but first date with Taylor, who became your wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Share with our listeners how that occurred.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 Well, I guess that starts with first meeting Taylor.\u00a0 I was going to meet with my buddy, Dave, in Palo Alto, California.\u00a0 We were going to hang out one night; but first, I was stopping by a friend\u2019s house\u2014who was having a party.\u00a0 I was just going to stop by; say, \u201cHi,\u201d to people for a few minutes; and then spend the evening with my buddy, Dave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I walked into this party.\u00a0 I walked into the kitchen there; and standing in front of me was this woman with gorgeous blue eyes, incredible blonde hair.\u00a0 She was hot!\u00a0 What I did is\u2014and it was kind of like the world stopped.\u00a0 I walked up to her, and I started talking to her.\u00a0 I met her, introduced myself, and heard her stutter.\u00a0 Taylor grew up with this slight stutter.\u00a0 She had this slight stutter that I thought was just really, really cute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I did was I called up my buddy Dave, who I was supposed to meet with that night.\u00a0 I said, \u201cHey, Dave, I met a girl.\u00a0 We\u2019re not hanging out tonight.\u00a0 I\u2019m staying here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI continued that night to get to know Taylor.\u00a0 Then, at the end of the night, I talked to my friend, who threw this party.\u00a0 I said, \u201cHey, tell me all about this girl, Taylor.\u00a0 You\u2019ve known her; I just met her.\u00a0 She seems incredible.\u00a0 She loves the Lord; she\u2019s fun; she seems great.\u00a0 Is my read on her right?\u201d\u00a0 He went on to tell me all about how he had feelings for her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ohhhhh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So, because of that, I didn\u2019t pursue Taylor.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t go after her for six weeks; but six weeks had passed, and I could not stop thinking about her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The friendship with that guy was only so deep; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes\u2014exactly.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 He\u2019s a great guy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI couldn\u2019t stop thinking about her.\u00a0 This had never happened to me before with a girl.\u00a0 So, what happened was that guy was leading a Bible study at the church up the road; and Taylor was going to this Bible study.\u00a0 I asked him (I called him up)\u2014I said, \u201cDo you still lead this Bible study?\u00a0 Is Taylor still coming to this Bible study?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cHey, I want to come to the Bible study just once because I want to come to ask Taylor out.\u00a0 I\u2019m not coming for the Bible study; I\u2019m not coming for you; I\u2019m coming for the girl.\u00a0 I want to come, see her again, and ask her out.\u00a0 I can\u2019t get this girl out of my head.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cYes;\u201d so I came\u2014went to the Bible study.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He had feelings for her; but he said, \u201cYes, come on\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 See, he had kind of moved on.\u00a0 Something had changed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Something had changed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He had fumbled the ball.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 He had fumbled the ball.\u00a0 It was my turn.\u00a0 So, I went to the Bible study and sat next to Taylor.\u00a0 She complimented me on my Bible, which was kind of weird.\u00a0 I got her phone number, and I called her up the next morning\u2014it was a Friday morning.\u00a0 It was my day off.\u00a0 I called her up on a Friday morning at 9:15 a.m. and asked her out on a date.\u00a0 I asked her if she wanted to go with me for a hike in the rain.\u00a0 It was kind of a drizzly, light rainy day in the Bay Area.\u00a0 I asked her out; and she said, \u201cLet me think about it,\u201d and hung up.\u00a0 She called me ten minutes later and said, \u201cYes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, wait, you didn\u2019t comment on this in the book.\u00a0 Why the ten-minute delay?\u00a0 Was she trying to count the cost of going for a walk in the mist and the rain?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 What she says now is that, at first, she thought that was really weird, \u201cWho asks a girl out at 9:15 in the morning on a Friday for a hike in the rain?\u201d\u00a0 I think she was making sure I wasn\u2019t a serial killer and all of that.\u00a0 She was actually with her dad at the moment and ran it by her dad.\u00a0 Her dad said, \u201cGo for it!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe called me back and said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 We met in front of the Stanford Theatre in downtown Palo Alto, and then I took her out for this hike in the rain.\u00a0 It was amazing.\u00a0 We went for this long walk and got to know each other.\u00a0 Kind of the turning point in the hike was when we came to this big, mossy log in the middle of this redwood forest.\u00a0 It was just really romantic\u2014really great.\u00a0 Later\u2014six months later\u2014I proposed to her at that same spot.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dude!\u00a0 From seeing her in the kitchen, to the hike in the rain, and six months later, you\u2019re engaged and ready to go?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we were pretty fast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2014how did you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d had a dating relationship\u2014I didn\u2019t have many girlfriends at all before.\u00a0 That was kind of intentional.\u00a0 I was kind of wired.\u00a0 Maybe we can tell the story here in a bit about how I grew up and my mom\u2019s prayers, by my bedside, as a young boy.\u00a0 I grew up with a strong vision and passion for marriage.\u00a0 It was kind of something God gave me as a young boy.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t too into the girlfriend-thing.\u00a0 I was into finding a wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had had a dating relationship toward the end of college, where I just kept having to think about it.\u00a0 I was really pretty serious about it.\u00a0 I had to kind of reason my way into it and why I <em>ought<\/em> to be into this relationship.\u00a0 Once that relationship ended, I prayed and said, \u201cGod, someday put a girl in my path where I just know.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even have to think about it.\u00a0 I just want to be with her.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what He did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and Taylor, on the other hand\u2014you compared her to girls who grow up, and at the age of five, know what the color, and the taste, and flavor is of their wedding cake.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Taylor wasn\u2019t at all like that.\u00a0 She was planning on being single until\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, she had no interest.\u00a0 Taylor grew up in a home with a lot of divorce.\u00a0 She saw a lot of hard, hard things happen to marriages.\u00a0 She had no desire for marriage.\u00a0 She thought that she might get married, maybe, in her late 30\u2019s, maybe, her early 40\u2019s.\u00a0 She did not have her mind set or her heart set on what has happened to her.\u00a0 She was 23 at our wedding.\u00a0 We now have three young boys at home.\u00a0 She\u2019s a stay-at-home mom and loves it.\u00a0 She loves taking care of our kids.\u00a0 That was <em>not <\/em>in her plan\u2014not in her cards at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have a lot of singles who listen to this broadcast, and I think you\u2019ve just encouraged some of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That \u201cperhaps God still does have a person for me.\u00a0 I need to be faithful to walk with Him and be His man (be His woman)\u2014not panic but expect God to be at work.\u201d\u00a0 Perhaps the prayers of your mother, or your father, or your grandmother will be answered with that right person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Take us back to your mom, when she prayed by your bedside, as a boy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; well, I grew up in a home with an incredible Christian mom who discipled me.\u00a0 She\u2019s the one who led me to the Lord.\u00a0 We went and saw the movie <em>Star Wars<\/em> together when I was five years old.\u00a0 We saw the movie and saw people die in the movie.\u00a0 That was the first time I had really ever thought about death.\u00a0 On the drive home from the movie with my mom, I asked my mom (and I remember clear as day), \u201cMom, what happens to people when they die?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe pulled off the side of the really busy road and shared the Gospel with me.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m sure I had heard it many times before, but that\u2019s when I would say God got ahold of my life.\u00a0 I saw my sin.\u00a0 I saw my need for a Savior, and I was saved that day.\u00a0 What my mom began to do with me is she began to pray with me every night (probably even before that).\u00a0 One of the things she would pray with me, about every night, was for my future wife.\u00a0 So my mom\u2014I think, you know, that a lot of guys don\u2019t have anything even close to that; but I thought that was normal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe would pray by my bedside, and we would pray for my future wife.\u00a0 I would just sort of imagine some girl out there somewhere\u2014some little girl that lived somewhere and we were praying for her.\u00a0 So, my mom gave me, very early on, a big vision for marriage and for manhood.\u00a0 I thought the most exciting thing to do, as a man, was to get married\u2014to find an amazing woman and to love her, to marry her, to have kids, to raise a family, to make an impact in the world for Jesus.\u00a0 To me, that was what was exciting as a young kid.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And how did that vision get planted in your heart?\u00a0 I mean, how did it become more than the normal, \u201cI guess I\u2019ll get married someday?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 I think I received these prayers\u2014the prayers of my mom\u2014and God started to do stuff in my heart.\u00a0 I can remember, as a little boy, sitting there in my bed, thinking, \u201cThat sounds really exciting to me!\u00a0 I want to be a husband!\u00a0 I want to be a dad!\u00a0 I want to do that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat grew through the years as I got to know other men\u2014as I got to see other marriages and what worked well and what didn\u2019t work well.\u00a0 I just thought, \u201cMan, this is God\u2019s calling on my life.\u00a0 This is what it means to be a man!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You grew up in California.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re the fifth generation Californian; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Correct; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019ve seen some divorce.\u00a0 I mean, in schoolmates, friends, etc.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are a lot of boys and girls growing up in homes who don\u2019t have a healthy view of marriage and family.\u00a0 In fact, they\u2019re terrified.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re more like Taylor than they are like you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What can a mom or a dad do, just as your mom did, other than pray to instill that healthy view of marriage and family?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think you teach what the Scriptures teach.\u00a0 You teach that marriage\u2014the first relationship that God ever created, in the Garden, was a marriage relationship.\u00a0 God has created men and women to come together.\u00a0 Some people will have a calling on their life of singleness, but God has created many people to come together in marriage\u2014a man and a woman to join their lives together.\u00a0 As they enter this exciting adventure and this crucible called marriage, lives are transformed.\u00a0 Lives are changed.\u00a0 We come to know Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTalk about it as a normal thing in your home.\u00a0 What I do with my boys\u2014I have three boys\u2014a five-year-old, a three-year-old, and a one-year-old.\u00a0 My two oldest boys\u2014if you walked up to them and asked them, right now, \u201cWhat do you have to do to get married?\u201d they would tell you three things.\u00a0 They would say, \u201cFirst, love Jesus; second, get a job; third, pick a girl who loves Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 They just know, in our home, that this is this grand, exciting thing that awaits them\u2014 following Christ; having a challenging job and being able to provide (having a calling that God\u2019s put on their life\u2014a vocation); and, you know, finding a girl who loves Jesus\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You talk in your book about how all first dates have something in common.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, all first dates have in common this\u2014that a man acts like a man; a man makes a move; a man initiates.\u00a0 All of us men are wired differently, and we have different personalities; but all first dates have in common that a man takes some sort of a risk to step out and to lead a woman\u2014to ask a woman out, to take her in a certain direction, to take a relationship in a certain direction.\u00a0 I think most men are afraid of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was terrified!\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019m thinking back to when I asked a girl out in my junior year in high school.\u00a0 As far as I can remember, that\u2019s the first time I had asked a girl out on a date.\u00a0 It was after my buddy came and said, \u201cNo!\u00a0 Her friend told me she will go out with you!\u201d\u00a0 I mean, I had to have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yes, you need that reassurance to start.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even then I wasn\u2019t sure!\u00a0 I mean, I remember how terrifying it was to do that; but you\u2019re saying a part of being a man is looking that fear in the face and going, \u201cI\u2019ll risk it!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I think God has called men to do that.\u00a0 A lot of guys are just afraid to ask women out these days.\u00a0 We started at my college campus\u2014I talk about this a little bit in my book.\u00a0 A buddy of mine and I started what we call \u201cThe Dating Revolution\u201d.\u00a0 We were getting frustrated that, at our college, which was a Christian college, there were kind of two kinds of relationships that guys and gals had.\u00a0 Either they had a very, very serious boyfriend-girlfriend relationship that was pretty much headed toward marriage, or guys and gals could hang out as friends.\u00a0 There was no sense of a man asking a woman out on a date with the purpose of getting to know her, to see if it might lead to anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we were on a run\u2014my buddy Andy and I.\u00a0 We went on a run in the hills of Santa Barbara.\u00a0 By mile two of the run, we had gotten so frustrated, talking about the condition of things at our campus, that we said, \u201cLet\u2019s start \u2018The Dating Revolution\u2019 on our campus.\u00a0 It starts with us!\u00a0 This is what we\u2019re going to do:\u00a0 we\u2019re going to start asking girls on dates, even when it\u2019s scary or even when it\u2019s risky.\u00a0 We\u2019re not going to lead them on or pretend this is going to marriage tomorrow; but we\u2019re going to be intentional about how we do this, and we\u2019re going to take the risk and ask girls on dates.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe came up with a motto and chose that we would believe this motto, whether it was true or not.\u00a0 Our motto was, \u201cWomen want to be with us.\u201d\u00a0 We just said, \u201cHey\u2014\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a real humble\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 We needed it to help our self\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 To help your confidence!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even if it was not real confidence, we needed the fake confidence to get started.\u00a0 So, we would tell ourselves that and just believe it, whether it was true or not.\u00a0 That day we started asking.\u00a0 We went to the dining commons at our school and asked two ladies out\u2014we did a double date.\u00a0 It kind of picked up at our campus; and there are people married today, as a result of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But Justin, you know that the culture is such that if a guy asks a girl out on a date, then the next thing everybody is asking is, \u201cDo you like each other?\u00a0 Is it serious?\u00a0 Is it going to go somewhere?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, a lot of people are like, \u201cI can\u2019t even ask her out on a date unless I\u2019m ready to go buy the ring.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Right; you\u2019ve got to deal with it.\u00a0 Dating is hard.\u00a0 You have to work through the mess.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to man-up and know there are some risks in asking a girl out, whether you\u2019re 21 and in college, or whether you are 28 or 30.\u00a0 Everybody\u2019s trying to get you to tie the knot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just choke it down and man-up and initiate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like this distinction you brought about in your book where you said that first dates have this common initiative\u2014men step out, and they\u2019re men.\u00a0 You carry it over from first dates, prior to marriage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to later on, after you\u2019ve won the prize, and the competition is over.\u00a0 You\u2019re saying men still need to man-up and initiate, after marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I would say, in a sense, that I wrote this book because I was ticked off.\u00a0 I wrote this book because I was looking around at men, and at marriages, and I was mad.\u00a0 I was not happy with the condition of men.\u00a0 I was not happy with the condition of marriages.\u00a0 I was looking at marriages, around me, that were struggling.\u00a0 I was looking at men, around me, who were struggling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what most (American) guys do is they date their girlfriend.\u00a0 They get their girlfriend to say, \u201cYes,\u201d to a proposal.\u00a0 They get married, and they think that the mission is accomplished.\u00a0 They think, \u201cHey, I dated my girlfriend.\u00a0 We\u2019re married now, and I\u2019ve got her;\u201d then, men kind of move on to other missions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSure, they might be sort of a decent husband and love their wife some; but their main mission\u2014their main objective\u2014becomes their new career, or some new hobby, or initiative they take on.\u00a0 That\u2019s where (kind of) all of their creative energy goes.\u00a0 That\u2019s where they seem to experience the most challenge that kind of energizes them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, you know, that single guys don\u2019t really know how to date.\u00a0 They know how to sell themselves.\u00a0 They know how to say, \u201cHey, look!\u00a0 This is me!\u00a0 This is what would make me so great as a husband.\u201d\u00a0 Then they secure that wife.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it\u2019s the married men who are the men that really know how to date because they\u2019ve made a covenant with a woman and they\u2019re deciding to keep pushing that covenant forward and to lead their marriage into new territory.\u00a0 I think marriage brings out the best in us and the worst in us.\u00a0 As a man in a marriage learns how to love and lead his wife\u2014to date his wife\u2014through all of the ups and downs that come with a marriage covenant, that\u2019s when the real dating begins.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about married dating this week, but I\u2019ve got to come back to the single guy because we\u2019re going to get his letter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s going to say, \u201cOkay, I hear it.\u00a0 Listen, I have gone up and asked all of these women out.\u00a0 Some have said, \u2018No;\u2019 others have said, \u201cYes;\u2019 and it\u2019s been miserable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m just sick of it!\u00a0 I\u2019m just ready to check out.\u00a0 It\u2019s not working for me.\u00a0 It sounds great.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to think that women want to be with me; but they\u2019re telling me, \u2018No, I don\u2019t\u2019.\u201d\u00a0 What do you say to them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, a couple of things.\u00a0 First of all, it depends on the single guy.\u00a0 The church I lead is full of a lot of single guys.\u00a0 I talk to single guys a lot.\u00a0 First, I just look at the single guy\u2014to see if he knows how to put himself together and dress.\u00a0 Is he in shape?\u00a0 Does he know how to be nice?\u00a0 Because this guy might be a total slob and that might be his problem.\u00a0 He might just need to work on that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, I would talk to people about how God will do things that you would never expect.\u00a0 Like Taylor\u2019s story.\u00a0 Taylor never thought marriage was coming.\u00a0 God is bigger than our plans.\u00a0 He\u2019s bigger than our desires.\u00a0 He\u2019s bigger than our failures.\u00a0 God did something that Taylor never, ever expected.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the time that I met Taylor, I was a youth pastor at a small church of about 250 people, where the average age in the church was 70 years old.\u00a0 I was the <em>only <\/em>20-something in the church, and I thought I had just ruined my life.\u00a0 I had moved from Santa Barbara to the San Francisco Bay area to be this youth pastor.\u00a0 I just left a college town, where there were all of these girls, my age.\u00a0 My only options were 70-year-old widows to date.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t going to do that!\u00a0 God brought Taylor into my life at a time I least expected it.\u00a0 I never expected that.\u00a0 So, I would say that to people, \u201cGod\u2019s going to do something!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019re saying, \u201cGet yourself where there\u2019s some desirability about you, if you\u2019re not there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Put good bait on the hook\u2014yes!\u00a0 If you\u2019re going to go fishing, you want something on that hook to go fishing.\u00a0 A lot of men are just mad that women are turning them down, but they haven\u2019t looked in the mirror for a while to see what\u2019s there.\u00a0 So, guys have to work on that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They may need some relationship training.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that would help.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, truthfully, for a lot of men, playing video games is a whole lot safer than developing a relationship with the opposite sex.\u00a0 Guys need to go to school and perhaps double-back with a young lady who turned you down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did that, by the way.\u00a0 I went back to a girl\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had the same clammy hands that Bob had\u2014the shakes, the whole nervous bit\u2014but it\u2019s a fun story because I turned to a buddy, who was a great guy, and said, \u201cIf she doesn\u2019t go out with me, here\u2019s a dime.\u00a0 You can call her and she can go out with you.\u201d\u00a0 I called her on the phone and she said, \u201cNo\u201d when I asked her if she\u2019d like to spend an evening together, going out to eat and to a movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said, \u201cNo;\u201d so I turned to my buddy and gave him a dime and said, \u201cYou can use my car\u201d because he didn\u2019t have one.\u00a0 She said, \u201cYes,\u201d for the same night.\u00a0 It crushed me.\u00a0 It crushed me; but later on, I doubled-back with her.\u00a0 Although it hurt at the point she delivered the truth, it ended up helping because (to your very point) I recognized how I was coming across.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She said, \u201cYou know, you really come across like you\u2019re a smart aleck.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A little cocky there; maybe?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think there might have been a little of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 A little bit of that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I think her statements helped reduce some of that; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I listened, I heard, and I learned.\u00a0 I think, for young men who are listening to us today, \u201cYes, dating is risky.\u00a0 If you take no risk, nothing will come to you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what you get when you do nothing\u2014nothing comes to you by taking no risks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know that Justin\u2019s book is called <em>Date Your Wife<\/em>.\u00a0 So, guys are going, \u201cOkay, I\u2019ll get that after I get married.\u201d\u00a0 It would not hurt a single guy to go ahead and read this book and start developing a vision for what your marriage is going that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 My two oldest boys\u2014if you walked up to them and asked them right now, \u201cWhat do you have to do to get married?\u201d they would tell you three things.\u00a0 They would say, \u201cFirst, love Jesus; second, get a job; third, pick a girl who loves Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey just know, in our home, that this is this grand, exciting thing that awaits them\u2014following Christ; having a challenging job and being able to provide (having a calling that God\u2019s put on their life\u2014a <\/em>Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 Dennis\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, I hadn\u2019t told you about this; but it was a couple of weekends ago that Barbara and I were home, and I looked out the window\u2014we live in the woods.\u00a0 I looked out and there was this <em>giant <\/em>bird, perched on one of our pine trees.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What kind?\u00a0 Like a hawk?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I wasn\u2019t sure.\u00a0 So, I got the binoculars; and I looked at it and I go, \u201cWhat in the <em>world<\/em> is that thing?\u201d\u00a0 Ultimately, it flew.\u00a0 It was a buzzard!\u00a0 It was a buzzard!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there something dead in the yard?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was wondering if he was thinking that I was; you know?\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I could never find anything, and I thought as I introduce today\u2019s guest on the show\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, you\u2019re doing that?\u00a0 Oh, this is terrible!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014we\u2019ve got a Buzzard, perched across the table from me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was probably\u2014I\u2019m thinking of all of the introductions of guests that you\u2019ve done in almost 20 years of radio\u2014that\u2019s one of the worst.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He deserved cracks at me and at you, too, as far as that goes.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 So, I just thought, \u201cHow can I introduce Justin Buzzard?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just would like to apologize, on behalf of Dennis.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but you have a six-foot, two-inch buzzard here, across from you.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a two-foot buzzard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Six-foot, two\u2014So, be careful!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Welcome to the broadcast, Justin.\u00a0 He is the lead pastor of Garden City Church in San Jos\u00e9, California; married for more than seven years; has three sons.\u00a0 He has written a book\u2014to give you an idea about the guy\u2014I think it\u2019s the only book we\u2019ve ever had here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> where you\u2019re just pointing at the guy\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s a good cover.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is a good cover.\u00a0 It says, \u201cDate Your Wife\u201d!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we\u2019re giving him a job, right away, with the cover\u2014telling him what to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had a phenomenal first date with your\u2014I guess she was not your wife at that point\u2014but first date with Taylor, who became your wife. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Share with our listeners how that occurred.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 Well, I guess that starts with first meeting Taylor.\u00a0 I was going to meet with my buddy, Dave, in Palo Alto, California.\u00a0 We were going to hang out one night; but first, I was stopping by a friend\u2019s house\u2014who was having a party.\u00a0 I was just going to stop by; say, \u201cHi,\u201d to people for a few minutes; and then spend the evening with my buddy, Dave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I walked into this party.\u00a0 I walked into the kitchen there; and standing in front of me was this woman with gorgeous blue eyes, incredible blonde hair.\u00a0 She was hot!\u00a0 What I did is\u2014and it was kind of like the world stopped.\u00a0 I walked up to her, and I started talking to her.\u00a0 I met her, introduced myself, and heard her stutter.\u00a0 Taylor grew up with this slight stutter.\u00a0 She had this slight stutter that I thought was just really, really cute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I did was I called up my buddy Dave, who I was supposed to meet with that night.\u00a0 I said, \u201cHey, Dave, I met a girl.\u00a0 We\u2019re not hanging out tonight.\u00a0 I\u2019m staying here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI continued that night to get to know Taylor.\u00a0 Then, at the end of the night, I talked to my friend, who threw this party.\u00a0 I said, \u201cHey, tell me all about this girl, Taylor.\u00a0 You\u2019ve known her; I just met her.\u00a0 She seems incredible.\u00a0 She loves the Lord; she\u2019s fun; she seems great.\u00a0 Is my read on her right?\u201d\u00a0 He went on to tell me all about how he had feelings for her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ohhhhh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So, because of that, I didn\u2019t pursue Taylor.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t go after her for six weeks; but six weeks had passed, and I could not stop thinking about her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The friendship with that guy was only so deep; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes\u2014exactly.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 He\u2019s a great guy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI couldn\u2019t stop thinking about her.\u00a0 This had never happened to me before with a girl.\u00a0 So, what happened was that guy was leading a Bible study at the church up the road; and Taylor was going to this Bible study.\u00a0 I asked him (I called him up)\u2014I said, \u201cDo you still lead this Bible study?\u00a0 Is Taylor still coming to this Bible study?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cHey, I want to come to the Bible study just once because I want to come to ask Taylor out.\u00a0 I\u2019m not coming for the Bible study; I\u2019m not coming for you; I\u2019m coming for the girl.\u00a0 I want to come, see her again, and ask her out.\u00a0 I can\u2019t get this girl out of my head.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cYes;\u201d so I came\u2014went to the Bible study.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He had feelings for her; but he said, \u201cYes, come on\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 See, he had kind of moved on.\u00a0 Something had changed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Something had changed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He had fumbled the ball.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 He had fumbled the ball.\u00a0 It was my turn.\u00a0 So, I went to the Bible study and sat next to Taylor.\u00a0 She complimented me on my Bible, which was kind of weird.\u00a0 I got her phone number, and I called her up the next morning\u2014it was a Friday morning.\u00a0 It was my day off.\u00a0 I called her up on a Friday morning at 9:15 a.m. and asked her out on a date.\u00a0 I asked her if she wanted to go with me for a hike in the rain.\u00a0 It was kind of a drizzly, light rainy day in the Bay Area.\u00a0 I asked her out; and she said, \u201cLet me think about it,\u201d and hung up.\u00a0 She called me ten minutes later and said, \u201cYes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, wait, you didn\u2019t comment on this in the book.\u00a0 Why the ten-minute delay?\u00a0 Was she trying to count the cost of going for a walk in the mist and the rain?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 What she says now is that, at first, she thought that was really weird, \u201cWho asks a girl out at 9:15 in the morning on a Friday for a hike in the rain?\u201d\u00a0 I think she was making sure I wasn\u2019t a serial killer and all of that.\u00a0 She was actually with her dad at the moment and ran it by her dad.\u00a0 Her dad said, \u201cGo for it!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe called me back and said, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 We met in front of the Stanford Theatre in downtown Palo Alto, and then I took her out for this hike in the rain.\u00a0 It was amazing.\u00a0 We went for this long walk and got to know each other.\u00a0 Kind of the turning point in the hike was when we came to this big, mossy log in the middle of this redwood forest.\u00a0 It was just really romantic\u2014really great.\u00a0 Later\u2014six months later\u2014I proposed to her at that same spot.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dude!\u00a0 From seeing her in the kitchen, to the hike in the rain, and six months later, you\u2019re engaged and ready to go?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we were pretty fast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2014how did you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d had a dating relationship\u2014I didn\u2019t have many girlfriends at all before.\u00a0 That was kind of intentional.\u00a0 I was kind of wired.\u00a0 Maybe we can tell the story here in a bit about how I grew up and my mom\u2019s prayers, by my bedside, as a young boy.\u00a0 I grew up with a strong vision and passion for marriage.\u00a0 It was kind of something God gave me as a young boy.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t too into the girlfriend-thing.\u00a0 I was into finding a wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had had a dating relationship toward the end of college, where I just kept having to think about it.\u00a0 I was really pretty serious about it.\u00a0 I had to kind of reason my way into it and why I <em>ought<\/em> to be into this relationship.\u00a0 Once that relationship ended, I prayed and said, \u201cGod, someday put a girl in my path where I just know.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even have to think about it.\u00a0 I just want to be with her.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what He did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and Taylor, on the other hand\u2014you compared her to girls who grow up, and at the age of five, know what the color, and the taste, and flavor is of their wedding cake.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Taylor wasn\u2019t at all like that.\u00a0 She was planning on being single until\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, she had no interest.\u00a0 Taylor grew up in a home with a lot of divorce.\u00a0 She saw a lot of hard, hard things happen to marriages.\u00a0 She had no desire for marriage.\u00a0 She thought that she might get married, maybe, in her late 30\u2019s, maybe, her early 40\u2019s.\u00a0 She did not have her mind set or her heart set on what has happened to her.\u00a0 She was 23 at our wedding.\u00a0 We now have three young boys at home.\u00a0 She\u2019s a stay-at-home mom and loves it.\u00a0 She loves taking care of our kids.\u00a0 That was <em>not <\/em>in her plan\u2014not in her cards at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have a lot of singles who listen to this broadcast, and I think you\u2019ve just encouraged some of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That \u201cperhaps God still does have a person for me.\u00a0 I need to be faithful to walk with Him and be His man (be His woman)\u2014not panic but expect God to be at work.\u201d\u00a0 Perhaps the prayers of your mother, or your father, or your grandmother will be answered with that right person.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Take us back to your mom, when she prayed by your bedside, as a boy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; well, I grew up in a home with an incredible Christian mom who discipled me.\u00a0 She\u2019s the one who led me to the Lord.\u00a0 We went and saw the movie <em>Star Wars<\/em> together when I was five years old.\u00a0 We saw the movie and saw people die in the movie.\u00a0 That was the first time I had really ever thought about death.\u00a0 On the drive home from the movie with my mom, I asked my mom (and I remember clear as day), \u201cMom, what happens to people when they die?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe pulled off the side of the really busy road and shared the Gospel with me.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m sure I had heard it many times before, but that\u2019s when I would say God got ahold of my life.\u00a0 I saw my sin.\u00a0 I saw my need for a Savior, and I was saved that day.\u00a0 What my mom began to do with me is she began to pray with me every night (probably even before that).\u00a0 One of the things she would pray with me, about every night, was for my future wife.\u00a0 So my mom\u2014I think, you know, that a lot of guys don\u2019t have anything even close to that; but I thought that was normal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe would pray by my bedside, and we would pray for my future wife.\u00a0 I would just sort of imagine some girl out there somewhere\u2014some little girl that lived somewhere and we were praying for her.\u00a0 So, my mom gave me, very early on, a big vision for marriage and for manhood.\u00a0 I thought the most exciting thing to do, as a man, was to get married\u2014to find an amazing woman and to love her, to marry her, to have kids, to raise a family, to make an impact in the world for Jesus.\u00a0 To me, that was what was exciting as a young kid.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And how did that vision get planted in your heart?\u00a0 I mean, how did it become more than the normal, \u201cI guess I\u2019ll get married someday?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 I think I received these prayers\u2014the prayers of my mom\u2014and God started to do stuff in my heart.\u00a0 I can remember, as a little boy, sitting there in my bed, thinking, \u201cThat sounds really exciting to me!\u00a0 I want to be a husband!\u00a0 I want to be a dad!\u00a0 I want to do that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat grew through the years as I got to know other men\u2014as I got to see other marriages and what worked well and what didn\u2019t work well.\u00a0 I just thought, \u201cMan, this is God\u2019s calling on my life.\u00a0 This is what it means to be a man!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You grew up in California.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re the fifth generation Californian; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Correct; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019ve seen some divorce.\u00a0 I mean, in schoolmates, friends, etc.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are a lot of boys and girls growing up in homes who don\u2019t have a healthy view of marriage and family.\u00a0 In fact, they\u2019re terrified.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re more like Taylor than they are like you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What can a mom or a dad do, just as your mom did, other than pray to instill that healthy view of marriage and family?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think you teach what the Scriptures teach.\u00a0 You teach that marriage\u2014the first relationship that God ever created, in the Garden, was a marriage relationship.\u00a0 God has created men and women to come together.\u00a0 Some people will have a calling on their life of singleness, but God has created many people to come together in marriage\u2014a man and a woman to join their lives together.\u00a0 As they enter this exciting adventure and this crucible called marriage, lives are transformed.\u00a0 Lives are changed.\u00a0 We come to know Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTalk about it as a normal thing in your home.\u00a0 What I do with my boys\u2014I have three boys\u2014a five-year-old, a three-year-old, and a one-year-old.\u00a0 My two oldest boys\u2014if you walked up to them and asked them, right now, \u201cWhat do you have to do to get married?\u201d they would tell you three things.\u00a0 They would say, \u201cFirst, love Jesus; second, get a job; third, pick a girl who loves Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 They just know, in our home, that this is this grand, exciting thing that awaits them\u2014 following Christ; having a challenging job and being able to provide (having a calling that God\u2019s put on their life\u2014a vocation); and, you know, finding a girl who loves Jesus\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You talk in your book about how all first dates have something in common.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, all first dates have in common this\u2014that a man acts like a man; a man makes a move; a man initiates.\u00a0 All of us men are wired differently, and we have different personalities; but all first dates have in common that a man takes some sort of a risk to step out and to lead a woman\u2014to ask a woman out, to take her in a certain direction, to take a relationship in a certain direction.\u00a0 I think most men are afraid of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was terrified!\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019m thinking back to when I asked a girl out in my junior year in high school.\u00a0 As far as I can remember, that\u2019s the first time I had asked a girl out on a date.\u00a0 It was after my buddy came and said, \u201cNo!\u00a0 Her friend told me she will go out with you!\u201d\u00a0 I mean, I had to have\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yes, you need that reassurance to start.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even then I wasn\u2019t sure!\u00a0 I mean, I remember how terrifying it was to do that; but you\u2019re saying a part of being a man is looking that fear in the face and going, \u201cI\u2019ll risk it!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I think God has called men to do that.\u00a0 A lot of guys are just afraid to ask women out these days.\u00a0 We started at my college campus\u2014I talk about this a little bit in my book.\u00a0 A buddy of mine and I started what we call \u201cThe Dating Revolution\u201d.\u00a0 We were getting frustrated that, at our college, which was a Christian college, there were kind of two kinds of relationships that guys and gals had.\u00a0 Either they had a very, very serious boyfriend-girlfriend relationship that was pretty much headed toward marriage, or guys and gals could hang out as friends.\u00a0 There was no sense of a man asking a woman out on a date with the purpose of getting to know her, to see if it might lead to anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we were on a run\u2014my buddy Andy and I.\u00a0 We went on a run in the hills of Santa Barbara.\u00a0 By mile two of the run, we had gotten so frustrated, talking about the condition of things at our campus, that we said, \u201cLet\u2019s start \u2018The Dating Revolution\u2019 on our campus.\u00a0 It starts with us!\u00a0 This is what we\u2019re going to do:\u00a0 we\u2019re going to start asking girls on dates, even when it\u2019s scary or even when it\u2019s risky.\u00a0 We\u2019re not going to lead them on or pretend this is going to marriage tomorrow; but we\u2019re going to be intentional about how we do this, and we\u2019re going to take the risk and ask girls on dates.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe came up with a motto and chose that we would believe this motto, whether it was true or not.\u00a0 Our motto was, \u201cWomen want to be with us.\u201d\u00a0 We just said, \u201cHey\u2014\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a real humble\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 We needed it to help our self\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 To help your confidence!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even if it was not real confidence, we needed the fake confidence to get started.\u00a0 So, we would tell ourselves that and just believe it, whether it was true or not.\u00a0 That day we started asking.\u00a0 We went to the dining commons at our school and asked two ladies out\u2014we did a double date.\u00a0 It kind of picked up at our campus; and there are people married today, as a result of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But Justin, you know that the culture is such that if a guy asks a girl out on a date, then the next thing everybody is asking is, \u201cDo you like each other?\u00a0 Is it serious?\u00a0 Is it going to go somewhere?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, a lot of people are like, \u201cI can\u2019t even ask her out on a date unless I\u2019m ready to go buy the ring.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Right; you\u2019ve got to deal with it.\u00a0 Dating is hard.\u00a0 You have to work through the mess.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to man-up and know there are some risks in asking a girl out, whether you\u2019re 21 and in college, or whether you are 28 or 30.\u00a0 Everybody\u2019s trying to get you to tie the knot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just choke it down and man-up and initiate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like this distinction you brought about in your book where you said that first dates have this common initiative\u2014men step out, and they\u2019re men.\u00a0 You carry it over from first dates, prior to marriage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to later on, after you\u2019ve won the prize, and the competition is over.\u00a0 You\u2019re saying men still need to man-up and initiate, after marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I would say, in a sense, that I wrote this book because I was ticked off.\u00a0 I wrote this book because I was looking around at men, and at marriages, and I was mad.\u00a0 I was not happy with the condition of men.\u00a0 I was not happy with the condition of marriages.\u00a0 I was looking at marriages, around me, that were struggling.\u00a0 I was looking at men, around me, who were struggling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what most (American) guys do is they date their girlfriend.\u00a0 They get their girlfriend to say, \u201cYes,\u201d to a proposal.\u00a0 They get married, and they think that the mission is accomplished.\u00a0 They think, \u201cHey, I dated my girlfriend.\u00a0 We\u2019re married now, and I\u2019ve got her;\u201d then, men kind of move on to other missions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSure, they might be sort of a decent husband and love their wife some; but their main mission\u2014their main objective\u2014becomes their new career, or some new hobby, or initiative they take on.\u00a0 That\u2019s where (kind of) all of their creative energy goes.\u00a0 That\u2019s where they seem to experience the most challenge that kind of energizes them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, you know, that single guys don\u2019t really know how to date.\u00a0 They know how to sell themselves.\u00a0 They know how to say, \u201cHey, look!\u00a0 This is me!\u00a0 This is what would make me so great as a husband.\u201d\u00a0 Then they secure that wife.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it\u2019s the married men who are the men that really know how to date because they\u2019ve made a covenant with a woman and they\u2019re deciding to keep pushing that covenant forward and to lead their marriage into new territory.\u00a0 I think marriage brings out the best in us and the worst in us.\u00a0 As a man in a marriage learns how to love and lead his wife\u2014to date his wife\u2014through all of the ups and downs that come with a marriage covenant, that\u2019s when the real dating begins.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about married dating this week, but I\u2019ve got to come back to the single guy because we\u2019re going to get his letter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s going to say, \u201cOkay, I hear it.\u00a0 Listen, I have gone up and asked all of these women out.\u00a0 Some have said, \u2018No;\u2019 others have said, \u201cYes;\u2019 and it\u2019s been miserable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m just sick of it!\u00a0 I\u2019m just ready to check out.\u00a0 It\u2019s not working for me.\u00a0 It sounds great.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to think that women want to be with me; but they\u2019re telling me, \u2018No, I don\u2019t\u2019.\u201d\u00a0 What do you say to them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, a couple of things.\u00a0 First of all, it depends on the single guy.\u00a0 The church I lead is full of a lot of single guys.\u00a0 I talk to single guys a lot.\u00a0 First, I just look at the single guy\u2014to see if he knows how to put himself together and dress.\u00a0 Is he in shape?\u00a0 Does he know how to be nice?\u00a0 Because this guy might be a total slob and that might be his problem.\u00a0 He might just need to work on that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, I would talk to people about how God will do things that you would never expect.\u00a0 Like Taylor\u2019s story.\u00a0 Taylor never thought marriage was coming.\u00a0 God is bigger than our plans.\u00a0 He\u2019s bigger than our desires.\u00a0 He\u2019s bigger than our failures.\u00a0 God did something that Taylor never, ever expected.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the time that I met Taylor, I was a youth pastor at a small church of about 250 people, where the average age in the church was 70 years old.\u00a0 I was the <em>only <\/em>20-something in the church, and I thought I had just ruined my life.\u00a0 I had moved from Santa Barbara to the San Francisco Bay area to be this youth pastor.\u00a0 I just left a college town, where there were all of these girls, my age.\u00a0 My only options were 70-year-old widows to date.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t going to do that!\u00a0 God brought Taylor into my life at a time I least expected it.\u00a0 I never expected that.\u00a0 So, I would say that to people, \u201cGod\u2019s going to do something!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019re saying, \u201cGet yourself where there\u2019s some desirability about you, if you\u2019re not there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Put good bait on the hook\u2014yes!\u00a0 If you\u2019re going to go fishing, you want something on that hook to go fishing.\u00a0 A lot of men are just mad that women are turning them down, but they haven\u2019t looked in the mirror for a while to see what\u2019s there.\u00a0 So, guys have to work on that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They may need some relationship training.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that would help.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, truthfully, for a lot of men, playing video games is a whole lot safer than developing a relationship with the opposite sex.\u00a0 Guys need to go to school and perhaps double-back with a young lady who turned you down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did that, by the way.\u00a0 I went back to a girl\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had the same clammy hands that Bob had\u2014the shakes, the whole nervous bit\u2014but it\u2019s a fun story because I turned to a buddy, who was a great guy, and said, \u201cIf she doesn\u2019t go out with me, here\u2019s a dime.\u00a0 You can call her and she can go out with you.\u201d\u00a0 I called her on the phone and she said, \u201cNo\u201d when I asked her if she\u2019d like to spend an evening together, going out to eat and to a movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said, \u201cNo;\u201d so I turned to my buddy and gave him a dime and said, \u201cYou can use my car\u201d because he didn\u2019t have one.\u00a0 She said, \u201cYes,\u201d for the same night.\u00a0 It crushed me.\u00a0 It crushed me; but later on, I doubled-back with her.\u00a0 Although it hurt at the point she delivered the truth, it ended up helping because (to your very point) I recognized how I was coming across.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She said, \u201cYou know, you really come across like you\u2019re a smart aleck.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A little cocky there; maybe?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think there might have been a little of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 A little bit of that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I think her statements helped reduce some of that; you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I listened, I heard, and I learned.\u00a0 I think, for young men who are listening to us today, \u201cYes, dating is risky.\u00a0 If you take no risk, nothing will come to you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Justin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what you get when you do nothing\u2014nothing comes to you by taking no risks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know that Justin\u2019s book is called <em>Date Your Wife<\/em>.\u00a0 So, guys are going, \u201cOkay, I\u2019ll get that after I get married.\u201d\u00a0 It would not hurt a single guy to go ahead and read this book and start developing a vision for what your marriage is going
