but they have taken in this daughter and raised her as their own.\u00a0 I\u2019ve talked to them several times about raising a daughter when you\u2019re in your 60s\u2014and it\u2019s your granddaughter\u2014but she\u2019s become your daughter now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cYou know, one of the great things about it is I\u2019m getting a do-over.\u00a0 I\u2019m getting to do a second time what I wish I could have done better the first time.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s got some wisdom.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t have as much energy as he used to have, but he\u2019s got more wisdom than he used to have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe told me that they sit down at breakfast.\u00a0 They\u2019ve been using Bruce Ware\u2019s book, <em>Big Truths for Young Hearts<\/em>, a kind of theology book that they go through together\u2014father and daughter, at the breakfast table.\u00a0 He said, \u201cShe loves it, and I\u2019m learning stuff as I got through it.\u201d\u00a0 He says it\u2019s a rich time.\u00a0 Really, I look at him and I think he\u2019s a model for younger men of what it can be and what it ought to be as you raise your kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I think it is interesting that God gives children to younger adults who\u2014let\u2019s face it, I was clueless.\u00a0 You were clueless.\u00a0 We all admitted we were clueless when we started this journey.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s all a part of helping us grow up and embrace the Scriptures ourselves\u2014come to grips with what we believe the Bible says about our lives\u2014and, in the process, come out of the whole parenting deal much better people.\u00a0 I\u2019m a better person for having had six children.\u00a0 They taught me much more about God than I could have ever learned by myself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know the guest we have today on the broadcast, Voddie Baucham, agrees because he\u2019s written a book, <em>Family Shepherds<\/em>, which is all about teaching your kids about God and, in the process, learning it yourself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tVoddie, welcome back to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s good to be back.\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Voddie is a pastor, a speaker, an author, and a father, as well.\u00a0 He\u2019s passionate about developing men to really be the shepherds of their families.\u00a0 You talk about a typical family today that goes to church, in your book.\u00a0 As Bob said before we came on the air, you kind of had a play on words.\u00a0 You called them Ken and Barbie.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t call them Ken and Barbie, but it was a play off of Ken and Barbie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Barbara?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 We knew who you were talking about!\u00a0 Introduce our listeners to who Ken and Barbie are\u2014in the church today\u2014a young family, just starting out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Typical young family starting out.\u00a0 It\u2019s a family that everybody looks at and says, \u201cThey\u2019ve got it all together.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019ve got a few kids, and Barbara\u2019s active in the church. She\u2019s a leader in the women\u2019s ministry, and Ken is deacon and all this good stuff.\u00a0 That\u2019s the family.\u00a0 You look at them and you say, \u201cThey\u2019ve got it all together.\u201d\u00a0 But, they get home, and they all scatter.\u00a0 The husband and wife don\u2019t spend time together.\u00a0 The kids are all off in their individual places, doing their individual things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 They never come together for anything.\u00a0 They don\u2019t share their meals together.\u00a0 There\u2019s nothing.\u00a0 There is no family life\u2014pardon the pun.\u00a0 It\u2019s just nonexistent; but at church, everybody looks at them and thinks, \u201cWow, perfect little Christian family.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are so many families out there who are just like Ken and Barbie.\u00a0 They look good on the outside.\u00a0 They know how to present themselves. We play this game with everybody else around us.\u00a0 \u201cEverything\u2019s okay;\u201d and even if, \u201cEverything\u2019s not okay,\u201d we\u2019re just going to agree that, \u201cEverything is okay.\u201d\u00a0 When it\u2019s not okay, we\u2019re not going to talk about it not being okay; but on the inside\u2014on the inside of their home, on the inside of their life\u2014there is absolutely nothing drawing them together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So if people saw the Bauchams, wouldn\u2019t they say, \u201cBoy, he loves the Lord.\u00a0 His wife\u2019s involved, and the kids are obedient and well-dressed.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019d see the same thing they might see with Ken and Barbie.\u00a0 How\u2019s it look different if we came to the Baucham home?\u00a0 People aren\u2019t scattering?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Laughing]\u00a0\u00a0 Oh boy.\u00a0 With seven kids!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s got to be a little scattering going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, there is; but here\u2019s the distinction that we strive for.\u00a0 The distinction that we strive for is understanding that, as a family, we share life together\u2014not just a ride to church.\u00a0 This whole idea of family shepherds\u2014family shepherd is not a job.\u00a0 It is a calling.\u00a0 For many men, here\u2019s\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to dispel this myth.\u00a0 This book and our time together is not about giving men another tool in their toolbox.\u00a0 This is about men completely changing the way they view themselves and the way they view their very purpose.\u00a0 This is not something else that men are to do.\u00a0 This is something that men are to understand that they ARE.\u00a0 You ARE the shepherd of your family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, there\u2019s no room for that whole Ken and Barbie\u2014\u201cEverything\u2019s okay out there in the world; and then when we get home, there\u2019s nothing,\u201d\u2014because we\u2019re family shepherds.\u00a0 We\u2019re shepherding them toward the Good Shepherd, Who is Christ.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t take a back seat to anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And there\u2019s something going\u00a0 on, spiritually\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in both Ken and Barbie\u2019s life.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that there\u2019s a blank slate on their lives\u2014where the only type of spiritual activity in their life\u2014the only nod they give to God is on Sunday morning between 10:00 and 12:00, or whenever they choose to go.\u00a0 There is a living, breathing connection with the same Savior Who rose again from the dead because He lives in them.\u00a0 He\u2019s affecting the way they live, and the choices they make, and who they hang out with, and where they go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things you do, at your church, that you wrote about is\u2014you challenge men\u2014I kind of love this because this got real practical.\u00a0 You\u2019re not being legalistic about this, but I just kind of like it.\u00a0 You said you challenged men.\u00a0 \u201cAre you watching too much TV?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cIs your mortgage too big?\u201d\u00a0 In other words, \u201cAre you in too much debt?\u201d and, \u201cIs your family out of control and spread too thin?\u201d\u00a0 I mean, \u201cWhat\u2019s going on in your life, below the surface?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re really engaging men around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That idea of lifestyle evaluation.\u00a0 You only do that when you understand what your role is.\u00a0 Again, if a guy, at his core, believes that he is an executive who happens to have a wife and kids, then everything that he does is to make himself a better executive.\u00a0 He manages the wife and kids; okay?\u2014but again, he\u2019s an executive, first and foremost.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He goes to seminars, he reads books\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; because that\u2019s who he is, and that\u2019s where he wins, and that\u2019s how he\u2019s measuring himself.\u00a0 But if a man understands that he is a husband and father, who provides for his family by being an executive\u2014that changes his entire perspective.\u00a0 Now, it\u2019s not being an executive that drives my family life.\u00a0 It\u2019s my family life that drives the way I view my role as an executive.\u00a0 This is a complete paradigm shift.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Talk to me, then, about what\u2014and I hate to say a \u201cprogram\u201d\u2014but a pattern of evangelism and discipleship in the home.\u00a0 I mean, I never took a class in how to do evangelism and discipleship in the home.\u00a0\u00a0 Do I do the \u201cFour Spiritual Laws\u201d with my kids at night, before they go to bed?\u00a0 What do you do to introduce your kids to Christ and help them grow in the faith?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 In that section\u2014that\u2019s the first section in the book.\u00a0 In that section, we start off with, \u201cWhat is the Gospel?\u201d because most guys don\u2019t know what the Gospel is.\u00a0 They don\u2019t know that the Gospel is a proclamation.\u00a0 That it is news\u2014it is good news about the redemptive work that God has accomplished through the person and work of Jesus Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo the most important thing, if guys are going to do a good job at being that priest and prophet in their home\u2014you know, the one who represents God before the people and represents the people before God\u2014if they\u2019re going to do a good job there, they have to first understand the Gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So what does the average person today think the Gospel is and how does his thinking need to change?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, wow.\u00a0 You ask the average person what the Gospel is and they\u2019ll give you the plan of salvation.\u00a0 You ask them what the Gospel is and they\u2019ll tell you that the Gospel is, you know, everything that Jesus taught.\u00a0 You ask them what the Gospel is and they\u2019ll tell you\u2014I mean, you\u2019ll get a variety of different answers.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what you rarely get is the right answer.\u00a0 That word means \u201cnews\u201d\u2014announcement of news.\u00a0 The Gospel is not something I live.\u00a0 I can\u2019t live the Gospel any more than I can live last night\u2019s news.\u00a0 The Gospel is something that must be proclaimed.\u00a0 You know the common, well-known Francis of Assisi quote\u2014you know, \u201cPreach the Gospel at all times; and when necessary, use words.\u201d\u00a0 You know, that sounds good but it\u2019s the absolute opposite of what is true.\u00a0 You have to use words to preach the Gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, think about it this way.\u00a0 Think about a news station here in Little Rock, where you guys are.\u00a0 They say, \u201cChannel 11 news.\u00a0 Our news is so powerful; we don\u2019t use words.\u201d\u00a0 [All laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you imagine that?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just pictures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, just pictures.\u00a0 They\u2019re sitting down there and they\u2019re just, you know, walking around.\u00a0 You\u2019re trying to figure out what the news is by the way they\u2019re living their life.\u00a0 The only way news is heard is that it has to be proclaimed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So should a dad, at dinner, be saying, \u201cNow kids.\u00a0 I told you this last night; but remember, \u2018Jesus died.\u00a0 He was resurrected.\u2019\u00a0 That\u2019s the good news.\u00a0 And so, we\u2019ve got our Gospel for tonight.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing, and this is where we get to that whole idea of the indicatives and imperatives.\u00a0 We are always reminding our children and ourselves of the Gospel because everything that we do is rooted and grounded therein.\u00a0 So, when I\u2019m called to obedience, and this is what Paul tells us in Philippians, you know, \u201cIt is Him who works in us both to will and to work for His good pleasure\u201d\u2014right after he tells us \u201cto work out our salvation with fear and trembling.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn the one hand, you have an imperative.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what you do.\u00a0 On the other hand, you have the indicative.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what God has done and is doing in you in order that you might have the power and the passion to accomplish what He\u2019s called you to accomplish.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re always reminding ourselves of the indicatives, or the Gospel, and what\u2019s been accomplished because of Christ\u2019s finished work.\u00a0 That motivates us and empowers us to accomplish the imperatives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I\u2019ve got a three-year-old.\u00a0 How do I preach the Gospel to a three-year-old?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it\u2019s great.\u00a0 Your three-year-old does something.\u00a0 Your three-year-old lies.\u00a0 Now, my three-year-old has lied.\u00a0 \u201cYou understand that you lied?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cYes, I understand that I lied.\u201d\u00a0 Hopefully, my three-year-old knows something about the Ten Commandments.\u00a0 He knows that God says, \u201cYou\u2019re not to lie.\u201d\u00a0 He knows about the warnings that we have in the Scriptures about lying.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I\u2019ve got two choices.\u00a0 I can tell him, \u201cOkay, now, so don\u2019t lie any more.\u00a0 Go tell the truth.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s works righteousness.\u00a0 Instead, say, \u201cDo you know why you lied?\u201d\u00a0 Now we get to his heart.\u00a0 Now we get to his sin.\u00a0 When I let him know that\u2019s he\u2019s lying because of his heart and because of his sin, I remind him, once again, that that\u2019s just another indication that what he needs is for Jesus to save him from his sin.\u00a0 See, now I\u2019m not moving towards works righteousness.\u00a0 I\u2019m moving toward the Gospel.\u00a0 With a three-year-old, that\u2019s all day, every day, that you have an opportunity to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you say, \u201cSave him from his sin,\u201d you\u2019re not just talking about saving him from hell.\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about, \u201cForgive him for what he\u2019s done,\u201d but also, \u201cTransform him into the kind of young person who doesn\u2019t tell lies anymore, who doesn\u2019t want to tell lies anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Indicatives and imperatives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the kind of young person who learns not to live his life around himself but wants to honor God with his life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re talking here about the identity of a father in the home.\u00a0 You use two terms that I really liked\u2014kind of as just simple concepts.\u00a0 I want a man, who is listening to us right now\u2014whether you\u2019re single, married with no kids, married with kids, regardless of their age\u2014to just think about these two concepts around what Voddie\u2019s just been talking about\u2014about the proclamation of news; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The first identity is \u201cpriest\u201d.\u00a0 What does a priest do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 A picture of the priest is the one who represents his people before God. In other words, the priest is the one who goes to God on behalf of His people.\u00a0 He is the intercessor.\u00a0 That is the priest\u2019s role\u2014is the intercessor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He uses words to intercede before God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019re talking about a dad praying for his family?\u00a0 Is that what a priest does?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What does that look like for you, as a dad?\u00a0 I mean, do you have a devotional time where you\u2019re praying for your kids, by name, every day?\u00a0 Is that a part of your rhythm?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s not only that; but even in our times when we\u2019re gathered together as a family, we\u2019re praying for one another.\u00a0 When they\u2019re going down to bed at night, there\u2019s time when we\u2019re praying for them.\u00a0 I have a section in the book where I talk about Cotton Mather and the instructions that he has for parents, concerning their children.\u00a0 He says in this passionate section\u2014and the book is like a little booklet\u2014twenty- something pages, or whatever.\u00a0 I can\u2019t read it without crying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, who is he?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Cotton Mather was an early American\u2014sort of Puritan pastor.\u00a0 Mather talks about taking your children aside, every now and then\u2014you know, praying for your children\u2019s salvation in your prayer closet; but every now and then\u2014bringing them with you, and praying to the Lord on their behalf that they might be saved and allowing them to hear the groanings of your very soul as you cry out to God on behalf of that child and their need for salvation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that something you\u2019ve done?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And what do your kids\u2014what do they think when Daddy says, \u201cCome, I\u2019m going to pray for you,\u201d and you cry out to God for their salvation?\u00a0 What do they\u2014how do they respond?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing.\u00a0 If it is part of your life, and it\u2019s what you hear on a regular ongoing basis as a child\u2014that is not out of the ordinary.\u00a0 It makes all the sense in the world because Daddy tells me a dozen times a day that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m a sinner?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014I\u2019m a sinner; and it\u2019s these things I\u2019m doing, coming out of that sin, and I need to be saved.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I need redemption, and Dad\u2019s going to the Almighty God who can deliver that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen!\u00a0 Amen!\u00a0 Amen!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 There\u2019s a second identity I want you to cover just really quickly.\u00a0 That is, again, think of this identity around what Voddie\u2019s talking about\u2014about a father being one who proclaims news.\u00a0 That is the role of being a prophet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 The prophet is the one who presents God before the people.\u00a0 He\u2019s proclaiming what \u201cthus sayeth the Lord\u201d to the people.\u00a0 That\u2019s the teaching function\u2014the teaching role that we have.\u00a0 That is the ongoing reminder of the Gospel.\u00a0 That is our gathering together around the Word of God, and reading, and teaching the Scriptures to our family.\u00a0 That is our taking opportunities to teach our children and give them, not just times when they need to be reproved or rebuked; but also, there are other opportunities.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen there is a news story that comes up and you see somebody in the news\u2014who just sort of is a modern-day proverb\u2014this is what the ultimate end of that kind of lifestyle is.\u00a0 You take your kids aside and you say, \u201cListen.\u00a0 Do you remember when I told you that if you lived like this, that ultimately this is the end of it?\u00a0 Here is an example, in living-color, in real-life, today.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s part of the prophetic responsibility of a father.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you\u2019re a dad\u2014and you\u2019re taking a son to a sporting event, you\u2019re there to have fun with your boy; but you\u2019re also looking for those moments when you can shepherd\u00a0 him\u2014when you can point out some things.\u00a0 \u201cSee that player there in the end zone, and he\u2019s doing that dance, and he\u2019s just trying to draw attention to himself?\u00a0 What should we think?\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019re really helping them think critically about what they\u2019re observing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I\u2019m thinking about our conversation here; and I\u2019m reflecting back on another conversation I had earlier this week with a person who was struggling with an identity issue.\u00a0 I gave this person a passage of Scripture to memorize.\u00a0 I\u2019m wondering, Voddie, if we\u2019re talking to a man right now who really is having an identity crisis.\u00a0 He\u2019s a man, a husband, a father; and he feels these responsibilities.\u00a0 He\u2019s been sensing them; and it\u2019s like, \u201cYou know, Voddie. You\u2019re right.\u00a0 I think more about what I do in my career than I think about who I am as a man, husband, and father\u2014really shepherding my family.\u201d\u00a0 Is there a passage of Scripture you would give me, not like a pill that\u2019s going to solve everything, but a passage that will help him think rightly about himself as a man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would take him to Ephesians 5.\u00a0 I\u2019d take him to Ephesians 5:22\u2014all the way through, at least, Ephesians 6:4\u2014because there we have the household codes in their most developed form.\u00a0 You start with 5:22 with, \u201cWives submitting to their husband as unto the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 That talks about the man\u2019s headship.\u00a0 It says who the man is, but it also puts that in context.\u00a0 It says it\u2019s not about him.\u00a0 It\u2019s about Christ.\u00a0 It\u2019s about the Gospel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you go on to verse 25.\u00a0 It talks about the husband loving the wife\u2014how \u201cas Christ loved the church, gave Himself up for her.\u201d\u00a0 Now, you see a picture of the man\u2019s role and the execution of his responsibility.\u00a0 It\u2019s not about him; it\u2019s about Christ.\u00a0 It\u2019s about the Gospel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you get to 6:1-4\u2014all of this trailing, right on after one another.\u00a0 You have \u201cChildren,\u201d you know, \u201cobey your parents in the Lord for this is right.\u00a0 Honor your father and your mother.\u201d\u00a0 Now, you have the picture of the outgrowth of this marital relationship bringing forth\u2014issuing forth\u2014children.\u00a0 We understand that in the context of the Gospel, as well.\u00a0 So, I would say from Ephesians 5:22 through 6:4 is a section of Scripture that I would tell a man to grab hold of if he wants to see a picture of the spiritual nature of his relationship as a family shepherd.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then, verse 4, which you didn\u2019t quote\u2014which is kind of the exclamation point\u2014\u201cFathers, do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in the disciple and instruction of the Lord,\u201d which\u00a0 is just what you\u2019re talking about\u2014not only here, but in your book.\u00a0 I think you\u2019re really right.\u00a0 I think most men have the wrong identity, the wrong picture, of who they are and what they\u2019re about.\u00a0 As a result, they\u2019re not making decisions based upon what is primary.\u00a0 They\u2019re basing a lot of their decisions on what is secondary\u2014what they do in their careers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I\u2019ve heard you say this before, Voddie\u2014but that passage in Ephesians, where it offers the promise that it will go well with you\u2014we look around and go, \u201cSo, how\u2019s it going with us in the land today?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019d have to say, \u201cIt\u2019s not going so well here in the land today.\u201d\u00a0 Then, we have to ask the question, \u201cIs it because children have not been obeying parents and fathers have been exasperating children?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019ve not been doing everything that the Bible tells us to do in the family.\u00a0 Maybe we can trace back some of our social pathologies to that core.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why I think what you\u2019re exhorting men to do in this book is so important.\u00a0 Of course, we\u2019ve got the book in our <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> Resource Center.\u00a0 Go online and find out more about Voddie Baucham\u2019s book, <em>Family Shepherds<\/em>.\u00a0 Again, the book is called <em>Family Shepherds,<\/em>and our website is FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 You can also get in touch with us by phone at 1-800-358-6329, that\u2019s 1-800-\u201cF\u201d as in family, \u201cL\u201d as in life, and then the word, \u201cTODAY\u201d.\u00a0 Ask about Voddie Baucham\u2019s book, <em>Family Shepherds<\/em>, when you contact us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tVoddie is a part of a new video series that FamilyLife is putting together for men.\u00a0 It\u2019s called <em>Stepping Up<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s based on material from Dennis Rainey\u2019s book, by the same name.\u00a0 The series is going to be available in August, and we\u2019re launching it with a national men\u2019s simulcast.\u00a0 The Stepping Up National Men\u2019s Simulcast will be Saturday, August 4<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChurches, all around the country, are going to be hosting this simulcast as an event for men in their community.\u00a0\u00a0 If you would like to have your church be a host church for the event, go to FamilyLifeToday.com for more information on how you can do that.\u00a0 Again, the website is FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 Click on the link for the Stepping Up National Men\u2019s Simulcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s also information available there about the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series that features Voddie Baucham, Matt Chandler, Mark Driscoll, Stu Weber, Dr. Robert Lewis, Joshua Harris, Crawford Loritts, and others.\u00a0 More information about the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series and the Stepping Up National Men\u2019s Simulcast can be found online at FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 Or you can call us if you have any questions; tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I have a friend of mine\u2014he and his wife are both in their middle 60s.\u00a0 Their daughter is, I think, 12 or 13 years old.\u00a0 She is their daughter by adoption.\u00a0 Actually, they are grandparents; but they have taken in this daughter and raised her as their own.\u00a0 I\u2019ve talked to them several times about raising a daughter when you\u2019re in your 60s\u2014and it\u2019s your granddaughter\u2014but she\u2019s become your daughter now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cYou know, one of the great things about it is I\u2019m getting a do-over.\u00a0 I\u2019m getting to do a second time what I wish I could have done better the first time.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s got some wisdom.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t have as much energy as he used to have, but he\u2019s got more wisdom than he used to have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe told me that they sit down at breakfast.\u00a0 They\u2019ve been using Bruce Ware\u2019s book, <em>Big Truths for Young Hearts<\/em>, a kind of theology book that they go through together\u2014father and daughter, at the breakfast table.\u00a0 He said, \u201cShe loves it, and I\u2019m learning stuff as I got through it.\u201d\u00a0 He says it\u2019s a rich time.\u00a0 Really, I look at him and I think he\u2019s a model for younger men of what it can be and what it ought to be as you raise your kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I think it is interesting that God gives children to younger adults who\u2014let\u2019s face it, I was clueless.\u00a0 You were clueless.\u00a0 We all admitted we were clueless when we started this journey.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s all a part of helping us grow up and embrace the Scriptures ourselves\u2014come to grips with what we believe the Bible says about our lives\u2014and, in the process, come out of the whole parenting deal much better people.\u00a0 I\u2019m a better person for having had six children.\u00a0 They taught me much more about God than I could have ever learned by myself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know the guest we have today on the broadcast, Voddie Baucham, agrees because he\u2019s written a book, <em>Family Shepherds<\/em>, which is all about teaching your kids about God and, in the process, learning it yourself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tVoddie, welcome back to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s good to be back.\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Voddie is a pastor, a speaker, an author, and a father, as well.\u00a0 He\u2019s passionate about developing men to really be the shepherds of their families.\u00a0 You talk about a typical family today that goes to church, in your book.\u00a0 As Bob said before we came on the air, you kind of had a play on words.\u00a0 You called them Ken and Barbie.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t call them Ken and Barbie, but it was a play off of Ken and Barbie. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Barbara?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 We knew who you were talking about!\u00a0 Introduce our listeners to who Ken and Barbie are\u2014in the church today\u2014a young family, just starting out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Typical young family starting out.\u00a0 It\u2019s a family that everybody looks at and says, \u201cThey\u2019ve got it all together.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019ve got a few kids, and Barbara\u2019s active in the church. She\u2019s a leader in the women\u2019s ministry, and Ken is deacon and all this good stuff.\u00a0 That\u2019s the family.\u00a0 You look at them and you say, \u201cThey\u2019ve got it all together.\u201d\u00a0 But, they get home, and they all scatter.\u00a0 The husband and wife don\u2019t spend time together.\u00a0 The kids are all off in their individual places, doing their individual things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 They never come together for anything.\u00a0 They don\u2019t share their meals together.\u00a0 There\u2019s nothing.\u00a0 There is no family life\u2014pardon the pun.\u00a0 It\u2019s just nonexistent; but at church, everybody looks at them and thinks, \u201cWow, perfect little Christian family.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are so many families out there who are just like Ken and Barbie.\u00a0 They look good on the outside.\u00a0 They know how to present themselves. We play this game with everybody else around us.\u00a0 \u201cEverything\u2019s okay;\u201d and even if, \u201cEverything\u2019s not okay,\u201d we\u2019re just going to agree that, \u201cEverything is okay.\u201d\u00a0 When it\u2019s not okay, we\u2019re not going to talk about it not being okay; but on the inside\u2014on the inside of their home, on the inside of their life\u2014there is absolutely nothing drawing them together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So if people saw the Bauchams, wouldn\u2019t they say, \u201cBoy, he loves the Lord.\u00a0 His wife\u2019s involved, and the kids are obedient and well-dressed.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019d see the same thing they might see with Ken and Barbie.\u00a0 How\u2019s it look different if we came to the Baucham home?\u00a0 People aren\u2019t scattering?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Laughing]\u00a0\u00a0 Oh boy.\u00a0 With seven kids!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s got to be a little scattering going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, there is; but here\u2019s the distinction that we strive for.\u00a0 The distinction that we strive for is understanding that, as a family, we share life together\u2014not just a ride to church.\u00a0 This whole idea of family shepherds\u2014family shepherd is not a job.\u00a0 It is a calling.\u00a0 For many men, here\u2019s\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to dispel this myth.\u00a0 This book and our time together is not about giving men another tool in their toolbox.\u00a0 This is about men completely changing the way they view themselves and the way they view their very purpose.\u00a0 This is not something else that men are to do.\u00a0 This is something that men are to understand that they ARE.\u00a0 You ARE the shepherd of your family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, there\u2019s no room for that whole Ken and Barbie\u2014\u201cEverything\u2019s okay out there in the world; and then when we get home, there\u2019s nothing,\u201d\u2014because we\u2019re family shepherds.\u00a0 We\u2019re shepherding them toward the Good Shepherd, Who is Christ.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t take a back seat to anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And there\u2019s something going\u00a0 on, spiritually\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in both Ken and Barbie\u2019s life.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that there\u2019s a blank slate on their lives\u2014where the only type of spiritual activity in their life\u2014the only nod they give to God is on Sunday morning between 10:00 and 12:00, or whenever they choose to go.\u00a0 There is a living, breathing connection with the same Savior Who rose again from the dead because He lives in them.\u00a0 He\u2019s affecting the way they live, and the choices they make, and who they hang out with, and where they go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things you do, at your church, that you wrote about is\u2014you challenge men\u2014I kind of love this because this got real practical.\u00a0 You\u2019re not being legalistic about this, but I just kind of like it.\u00a0 You said you challenged men.\u00a0 \u201cAre you watching too much TV?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cIs your mortgage too big?\u201d\u00a0 In other words, \u201cAre you in too much debt?\u201d and, \u201cIs your family out of control and spread too thin?\u201d\u00a0 I mean, \u201cWhat\u2019s going on in your life, below the surface?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re really engaging men around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That idea of lifestyle evaluation.\u00a0 You only do that when you understand what your role is.\u00a0 Again, if a guy, at his core, believes that he is an executive who happens to have a wife and kids, then everything that he does is to make himself a better executive.\u00a0 He manages the wife and kids; okay?\u2014but again, he\u2019s an executive, first and foremost.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He goes to seminars, he reads books\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; because that\u2019s who he is, and that\u2019s where he wins, and that\u2019s how he\u2019s measuring himself.\u00a0 But if a man understands that he is a husband and father, who provides for his family by being an executive\u2014that changes his entire perspective.\u00a0 Now, it\u2019s not being an executive that drives my family life.\u00a0 It\u2019s my family life that drives the way I view my role as an executive.\u00a0 This is a complete paradigm shift.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Talk to me, then, about what\u2014and I hate to say a \u201cprogram\u201d\u2014but a pattern of evangelism and discipleship in the home.\u00a0 I mean, I never took a class in how to do evangelism and discipleship in the home.\u00a0\u00a0 Do I do the \u201cFour Spiritual Laws\u201d with my kids at night, before they go to bed?\u00a0 What do you do to introduce your kids to Christ and help them grow in the faith?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 In that section\u2014that\u2019s the first section in the book.\u00a0 In that section, we start off with, \u201cWhat is the Gospel?\u201d because most guys don\u2019t know what the Gospel is.\u00a0 They don\u2019t know that the Gospel is a proclamation.\u00a0 That it is news\u2014it is good news about the redemptive work that God has accomplished through the person and work of Jesus Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo the most important thing, if guys are going to do a good job at being that priest and prophet in their home\u2014you know, the one who represents God before the people and represents the people before God\u2014if they\u2019re going to do a good job there, they have to first understand the Gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So what does the average person today think the Gospel is and how does his thinking need to change?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, wow.\u00a0 You ask the average person what the Gospel is and they\u2019ll give you the plan of salvation.\u00a0 You ask them what the Gospel is and they\u2019ll tell you that the Gospel is, you know, everything that Jesus taught.\u00a0 You ask them what the Gospel is and they\u2019ll tell you\u2014I mean, you\u2019ll get a variety of different answers.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what you rarely get is the right answer.\u00a0 That word means \u201cnews\u201d\u2014announcement of news.\u00a0 The Gospel is not something I live.\u00a0 I can\u2019t live the Gospel any more than I can live last night\u2019s news.\u00a0 The Gospel is something that must be proclaimed.\u00a0 You know the common, well-known Francis of Assisi quote\u2014you know, \u201cPreach the Gospel at all times; and when necessary, use words.\u201d\u00a0 You know, that sounds good but it\u2019s the absolute opposite of what is true.\u00a0 You have to use words to preach the Gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, think about it this way.\u00a0 Think about a news station here in Little Rock, where you guys are.\u00a0 They say, \u201cChannel 11 news.\u00a0 Our news is so powerful; we don\u2019t use words.\u201d\u00a0 [All laughing]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you imagine that?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just pictures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, just pictures.\u00a0 They\u2019re sitting down there and they\u2019re just, you know, walking around.\u00a0 You\u2019re trying to figure out what the news is by the way they\u2019re living their life.\u00a0 The only way news is heard is that it has to be proclaimed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So should a dad, at dinner, be saying, \u201cNow kids.\u00a0 I told you this last night; but remember, \u2018Jesus died.\u00a0 He was resurrected.\u2019\u00a0 That\u2019s the good news.\u00a0 And so, we\u2019ve got our Gospel for tonight.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing, and this is where we get to that whole idea of the indicatives and imperatives.\u00a0 We are always reminding our children and ourselves of the Gospel because everything that we do is rooted and grounded therein.\u00a0 So, when I\u2019m called to obedience, and this is what Paul tells us in Philippians, you know, \u201cIt is Him who works in us both to will and to work for His good pleasure\u201d\u2014right after he tells us \u201cto work out our salvation with fear and trembling.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn the one hand, you have an imperative.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what you do.\u00a0 On the other hand, you have the indicative.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what God has done and is doing in you in order that you might have the power and the passion to accomplish what He\u2019s called you to accomplish.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re always reminding ourselves of the indicatives, or the Gospel, and what\u2019s been accomplished because of Christ\u2019s finished work.\u00a0 That motivates us and empowers us to accomplish the imperatives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I\u2019ve got a three-year-old.\u00a0 How do I preach the Gospel to a three-year-old?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it\u2019s great.\u00a0 Your three-year-old does something.\u00a0 Your three-year-old lies.\u00a0 Now, my three-year-old has lied.\u00a0 \u201cYou understand that you lied?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cYes, I understand that I lied.\u201d\u00a0 Hopefully, my three-year-old knows something about the Ten Commandments.\u00a0 He knows that God says, \u201cYou\u2019re not to lie.\u201d\u00a0 He knows about the warnings that we have in the Scriptures about lying.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I\u2019ve got two choices.\u00a0 I can tell him, \u201cOkay, now, so don\u2019t lie any more.\u00a0 Go tell the truth.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s works righteousness.\u00a0 Instead, say, \u201cDo you know why you lied?\u201d\u00a0 Now we get to his heart.\u00a0 Now we get to his sin.\u00a0 When I let him know that\u2019s he\u2019s lying because of his heart and because of his sin, I remind him, once again, that that\u2019s just another indication that what he needs is for Jesus to save him from his sin.\u00a0 See, now I\u2019m not moving towards works righteousness.\u00a0 I\u2019m moving toward the Gospel.\u00a0 With a three-year-old, that\u2019s all day, every day, that you have an opportunity to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you say, \u201cSave him from his sin,\u201d you\u2019re not just talking about saving him from hell.\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about, \u201cForgive him for what he\u2019s done,\u201d but also, \u201cTransform him into the kind of young person who doesn\u2019t tell lies anymore, who doesn\u2019t want to tell lies anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Indicatives and imperatives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the kind of young person who learns not to live his life around himself but wants to honor God with his life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re talking here about the identity of a father in the home.\u00a0 You use two terms that I really liked\u2014kind of as just simple concepts.\u00a0 I want a man, who is listening to us right now\u2014whether you\u2019re single, married with no kids, married with kids, regardless of their age\u2014to just think about these two concepts around what Voddie\u2019s just been talking about\u2014about the proclamation of news; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The first identity is \u201cpriest\u201d.\u00a0 What does a priest do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 A picture of the priest is the one who represents his people before God. In other words, the priest is the one who goes to God on behalf of His people.\u00a0 He is the intercessor.\u00a0 That is the priest\u2019s role\u2014is the intercessor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He uses words to intercede before God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019re talking about a dad praying for his family?\u00a0 Is that what a priest does?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What does that look like for you, as a dad?\u00a0 I mean, do you have a devotional time where you\u2019re praying for your kids, by name, every day?\u00a0 Is that a part of your rhythm?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s not only that; but even in our times when we\u2019re gathered together as a family, we\u2019re praying for one another.\u00a0 When they\u2019re going down to bed at night, there\u2019s time when we\u2019re praying for them.\u00a0 I have a section in the book where I talk about Cotton Mather and the instructions that he has for parents, concerning their children.\u00a0 He says in this passionate section\u2014and the book is like a little booklet\u2014twenty- something pages, or whatever.\u00a0 I can\u2019t read it without crying. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, who is he?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Cotton Mather was an early American\u2014sort of Puritan pastor.\u00a0 Mather talks about taking your children aside, every now and then\u2014you know, praying for your children\u2019s salvation in your prayer closet; but every now and then\u2014bringing them with you, and praying to the Lord on their behalf that they might be saved and allowing them to hear the groanings of your very soul as you cry out to God on behalf of that child and their need for salvation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that something you\u2019ve done?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And what do your kids\u2014what do they think when Daddy says, \u201cCome, I\u2019m going to pray for you,\u201d and you cry out to God for their salvation?\u00a0 What do they\u2014how do they respond?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing.\u00a0 If it is part of your life, and it\u2019s what you hear on a regular ongoing basis as a child\u2014that is not out of the ordinary.\u00a0 It makes all the sense in the world because Daddy tells me a dozen times a day that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m a sinner?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014I\u2019m a sinner; and it\u2019s these things I\u2019m doing, coming out of that sin, and I need to be saved.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I need redemption, and Dad\u2019s going to the Almighty God who can deliver that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen!\u00a0 Amen!\u00a0 Amen!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 There\u2019s a second identity I want you to cover just really quickly.\u00a0 That is, again, think of this identity around what Voddie\u2019s talking about\u2014about a father being one who proclaims news.\u00a0 That is the role of being a prophet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 The prophet is the one who presents God before the people.\u00a0 He\u2019s proclaiming what \u201cthus sayeth the Lord\u201d to the people.\u00a0 That\u2019s the teaching function\u2014the teaching role that we have.\u00a0 That is the ongoing reminder of the Gospel.\u00a0 That is our gathering together around the Word of God, and reading, and teaching the Scriptures to our family.\u00a0 That is our taking opportunities to teach our children and give them, not just times when they need to be reproved or rebuked; but also, there are other opportunities.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen there is a news story that comes up and you see somebody in the news\u2014who just sort of is a modern-day proverb\u2014this is what the ultimate end of that kind of lifestyle is.\u00a0 You take your kids aside and you say, \u201cListen.\u00a0 Do you remember when I told you that if you lived like this, that ultimately this is the end of it?\u00a0 Here is an example, in living-color, in real-life, today.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s part of the prophetic responsibility of a father.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you\u2019re a dad\u2014and you\u2019re taking a son to a sporting event, you\u2019re there to have fun with your boy; but you\u2019re also looking for those moments when you can shepherd\u00a0 him\u2014when you can point out some things.\u00a0 \u201cSee that player there in the end zone, and he\u2019s doing that dance, and he\u2019s just trying to draw attention to himself?\u00a0 What should we think?\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019re really helping them think critically about what they\u2019re observing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I\u2019m thinking about our conversation here; and I\u2019m reflecting back on another conversation I had earlier this week with a person who was struggling with an identity issue.\u00a0 I gave this person a passage of Scripture to memorize.\u00a0 I\u2019m wondering, Voddie, if we\u2019re talking to a man right now who really is having an identity crisis.\u00a0 He\u2019s a man, a husband, a father; and he feels these responsibilities.\u00a0 He\u2019s been sensing them; and it\u2019s like, \u201cYou know, Voddie. You\u2019re right.\u00a0 I think more about what I do in my career than I think about who I am as a man, husband, and father\u2014really shepherding my family.\u201d\u00a0 Is there a passage of Scripture you would give me, not like a pill that\u2019s going to solve everything, but a passage that will help him think rightly about himself as a man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would take him to Ephesians 5.\u00a0 I\u2019d take him to Ephesians 5:22\u2014all the way through, at least, Ephesians 6:4\u2014because there we have the household codes in their most developed form.\u00a0 You start with 5:22 with, \u201cWives submitting to their husband as unto the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 That talks about the man\u2019s headship.\u00a0 It says who the man is, but it also puts that in context.\u00a0 It says it\u2019s not about him.\u00a0 It\u2019s about Christ.\u00a0 It\u2019s about the Gospel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you go on to verse 25.\u00a0 It talks about the husband loving the wife\u2014how \u201cas Christ loved the church, gave Himself up for her.\u201d\u00a0 Now, you see a picture of the man\u2019s role and the execution of his responsibility.\u00a0 It\u2019s not about him; it\u2019s about Christ.\u00a0 It\u2019s about the Gospel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, you get to 6:1-4\u2014all of this trailing, right on after one another.\u00a0 You have \u201cChildren,\u201d you know, \u201cobey your parents in the Lord for this is right.\u00a0 Honor your father and your mother.\u201d\u00a0 Now, you have the picture of the outgrowth of this marital relationship bringing forth\u2014issuing forth\u2014children.\u00a0 We understand that in the context of the Gospel, as well.\u00a0 So, I would say from Ephesians 5:22 through 6:4 is a section of Scripture that I would tell a man to grab hold of if he wants to see a picture of the spiritual nature of his relationship as a family shepherd.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then, verse 4, which you didn\u2019t quote\u2014which is kind of the exclamation point\u2014\u201cFathers, do not provoke your children to anger but bring them up in the disciple and instruction of the Lord,\u201d which\u00a0 is just what you\u2019re talking about\u2014not only here, but in your book.\u00a0 I think you\u2019re really right.\u00a0 I think most men have the wrong identity, the wrong picture, of who they are and what they\u2019re about.\u00a0 As a result, they\u2019re not making decisions based upon what is primary.\u00a0 They\u2019re basing a lot of their decisions on what is secondary\u2014what they do in their careers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I\u2019ve heard you say this before, Voddie\u2014but that passage in Ephesians, where it offers the promise that it will go well with you\u2014we look around and go, \u201cSo, how\u2019s it going with us in the land today?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019d have to say, \u201cIt\u2019s not going so well here in the land today.\u201d\u00a0 Then, we have to ask the question, \u201cIs it because children have not been obeying parents and fathers have been exasperating children?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019ve not been doing everything that the Bible tells us to do in the family.\u00a0 Maybe we can trace back some of our social pathologies to that core.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why I think what you\u2019re exhorting men to do in this book is so important.\u00a0 Of course, we\u2019ve got the book in our <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> Resource Center.\u00a0 Go online and find out more about Voddie Baucham\u2019s book, <em>Family Shepherds<\/em>.\u00a0 Again, the book is called <em>Family Shepherds,<\/em>and our website is FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 You can also get in touch with us by phone at 1-800-358-6329, that\u2019s 1-800-\u201cF\u201d as in family, \u201cL\u201d as in life, and then the word, \u201cTODAY\u201d.\u00a0 Ask about Voddie Baucham\u2019s book, <em>Family Shepherds<\/em>, when you contact us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tVoddie is a part of a new video series that FamilyLife is putting together for men.\u00a0 It\u2019s called <em>Stepping Up<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s based on material from Dennis Rainey\u2019s book, by the same name.\u00a0 The series is going to be available in August, and we\u2019re launching it with a national men\u2019s simulcast.\u00a0 The Stepping Up National Men\u2019s Simulcast will be Saturday, August 4<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChurches, all around the country, are going to be hosting this simulcast as an event for men in their community.\u00a0\u00a0 If you would like to have your church be a host church for the event, go to FamilyLifeToday.com for more information on how you can do that.\u00a0 Again, the website is FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 Click on the link for the Stepping Up National Men\u2019s Simulcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s also information available there about the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series that features Voddie Baucham, Matt Chandler, Mark Driscoll, Stu Weber, Dr. Robert Lewis, Joshua Harris, Crawford Loritts, and others.\u00a0 More information about the <em>Stepping Up<\/em> video series and the Stepping Up National Men\u2019s Simulcast can be found online at FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 Or you can call us if you have any questions;
