I\u2019m horrible at golf.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to do this anymore.\u201d\u00a0 He goes out and he gets a coach.\u00a0 He gets some new clubs made.\u00a0 He gets videos and everything else because he refuses to fail.\u00a0 What I hear from men is that, \u201cI\u2019m either going to succeed at this immediately,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m not going to do it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, June 4<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0\u00a0 In golf, you want your scores to be under par.\u00a0 In leading your family spiritually, you want to be above par; right?\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk about that today.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0\u00a0 You know what I hope is going to happen with today\u2019s program?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 What, Bob?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I hope that men, who are listening to our program today, as a result of what they hear, will do a better job of shepherding their family than I did of shepherding mine.\u00a0 I think most people would look and say, \u201cWell you did a good job.\u201d\u00a0 I think my kids would say, \u201cYou did a good job.\u201d\u00a0 I look back and go, \u201cI could have done a lot better than I did.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI could make all kinds of excuses about why I didn\u2019t, but I\u2019m hoping today we just take away some of the excuses and give men some handles on how they can do the kind of job God is calling them to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, I have a couple to add to that.\u00a0 I hope that men are encouraged by what they hear today.\u00a0 They\u2019re not going to feel beat up, but they are going to feel somebody\u2019s arm come around them.\u00a0 It\u2019s a strong arm.\u00a0 It will kind of hug them tight and let them know, \u201cLet\u2019s go.\u00a0 We can do this thing;\u201d but it will encourage them to truly step up and be the men God called them to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I hope their wives get a picture of how they can help their husbands be that man.\u00a0 And the strong arm\u2014well, the ultimate strong arm is God\u2019s, Who really wraps His arm around us and calls us up\u2014but the one you\u2019re about to feel reach through the radio is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014is Strong Arm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is Strong Arm.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking at him, and they\u2019re not weak.\u00a0 I shook his hand earlier, and you\u2019d respond to this strong arm here.\u00a0 Voddie Baucham joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\u00a0 Welcome back, Voddie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hey, thank you for having me.\u00a0 It is always a joy.\u00a0 I really appreciate this ministry, and I thank you for giving me an opportunity to come back again and talk about this subject.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019re all over this subject.\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of like\u2014Bob and I ran into each other in the hall, here in the office the other day; and he said, \u201cNow don\u2019t forget.\u00a0 Voddie is coming in.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI don\u2019t need to ask you what he\u2019s going to be talking about.\u00a0 You know, you slit his wrists and he hemorrhages this message.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn case you don\u2019t know who Voddie is, he is the pastor of Grace Family Baptist Church in Spring, Texas.\u00a0 That\u2019s a suburb of Houston. He\u2019s a speaker, an author of a number of books, husband and a father, and he\u2019s just finished a brand-new book called <em>Family Shepherd.<\/em>\u00a0 It\u2019s all about encouraging men to really step up and embrace their responsibility as a family shepherd.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou don\u2019t know this, Voddie; but a number of years ago, at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em><em>, <\/em>we used to have a session for the men that was entitled \u201cDad, the Family Shepherd\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and it was a lot like what you\u2019ve got in your book.\u00a0 It was a one-hour session with the men, calling them to be God\u2019s men as the priests and prophets of their family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Explain to our listeners really what your heart is as you\u2019ve put it between two covers here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 My heart is to see men understand the significance of their role.\u00a0 I think when men understand from a biblical, theological perspective the significance of their role, why they\u2019ve been placed in that role, why it is that the Creator of the universe puts them in a position and then calls us by His title, father\u2014I think when we grasp that, we come to a place where we can sometimes go to despair because it is overwhelming; and it\u2019s beyond us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what I want is for men to go\u2014not toward despair\u2014but I want them to go toward a sense of awe and a sense of dependence upon God, and a sense of committing themselves to this work that is, I believe, the most significant thing that they\u2019re going to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had a sense of the weightiness of the responsibility of being a family shepherd when you were in the delivery room as your wife gave birth to your first daughter.\u00a0 I mention that because I don\u2019t think I did.\u00a0 When we had a child, I remember thinking that my primary responsibility with our kids was to have a good relationship with them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI hadn\u2019t had much of a connection with my dad.\u00a0 He\u2019d been there, but disconnected.\u00a0 So my goal was, \u201cI\u2019m going to love my kids.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to know they\u2019re loved.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have fun together.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have a good relationship; and if I do that, I\u2019ve won as a dad.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou understood there\u2019s more to it than that, and you understood it early on; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did, and I was terrified because I had not seen that in my life.\u00a0 I was raised by a single, teenage, Buddhist mother.\u00a0 I was raised in drug-infested, gang-infested, south central Los Angeles, California, where I didn\u2019t have friends, even, who had fathers in their homes.\u00a0 Even in my family, my cousins and other members of our family didn\u2019t have fathers in their homes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo when I realized, at that moment, that I was a father and that I hadn\u2019t seen that before, I was overwhelmed by the magnitude of that responsibility and by the fact that I didn\u2019t have any tools in the toolbox to know what to do about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You, undoubtedly, even though you felt it initially, you undoubtedly, as you entered into the process, the weightiness of this responsibility grew.\u00a0 I mean, I don\u2019t think any man when they place that baby in your arms can begin to fathom all the spiritual battles that will be around that child\u2019s life, in attempting to protect them from evil, to guide them in the way of God, to teach them the truth about Him, to teach them how to experience grace when they fail, and what He teaches you through that child about your own selfishness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and your own brokenness.\u00a0 If you had to summarize for men, though, right now, what it means to be a family shepherd, how would you, in just a brief paragraph, describe this awesome role of family shepherd?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, your family exists for a purpose.\u00a0 God created the family for a purpose, and it is to bring glory and honor to Himself and to His Son.\u00a0 We don\u2019t just get there by accident.\u00a0 Our families have to be led there\u2014hence, the term, \u201cshepherd\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 And so we\u2019re not just shepherding our families arbitrarily.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re shepherding our families towards this greater reality of Christ and this beautiful relationship with His church, toward the triune God and the relationship within the context of the Godhead, and toward this glorious end when all things are summed up in Christ at His return; and there is this wonderful thing\u2014this wedding feast, if you will.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce we understand that, I think we get what it means to be a shepherd\u2014that we are guiding our families toward this Gospel-centered, God-centered perspective on what it means to be here and serve Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we can\u2019t guide them in that direction unless that\u2019s the fundamental core and direction of our own lives.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to be pursuing that, as men, first before we can be leading anybody that direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 The shepherd\u2019s got to know where the green grass is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 But it\u2019s also not sufficient to say, \u201cWell, I\u2019m going to model it; but I\u2019m just never going to say much about it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, because then you leave the door open for any means that your children think is appropriate to get where you are.\u00a0 And if they don\u2019t know how\u2014you know, we talk often about the indicatives and the imperatives in Scripture\u2014and if you don\u2019t understand the indicatives\u2014who we are in Christ, what God has done in Christ\u2014and all you have is the imperatives\u2014then you just use whatever means you believe in in order to get there.\u00a0 Usually, that turns to works righteousness, and that\u2019s the last place that we want our children to go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you don\u2019t teach your children the truth about life and about God from the Scriptures, the world will teach them a lie.\u00a0 That\u2019s guaranteed.\u00a0 That\u2019s what\u2019s happening today.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we\u2019re on this broadcast, talking about this, because, I think, we\u2019re losing a generation of families that does not realize the sacred nature of the truth of this Book\u2014because it guides us into the correct knowledge of Who God is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to go back to what you just said, though, about not modeling what you\u2019re teaching.\u00a0 Share with our listeners a time when you didn\u2019t.\u00a0 It\u2019s always easy to share the great illustrations of Voddie Baucham\u2014the great spiritual leader who led devotions and all of his kids were just around the table, dutifully nodding their heads.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t flipping peas across the table at each other, or throwing things at each other, or sliding down on their seat, underneath the table, like our kids did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019ve been at my house, then.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But seriously, share a time when you were convicted you weren\u2019t modeling what you were teaching.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Boy!\u00a0 That happens to me daily!\u00a0 I mean, I always realize\u2014for example, and I think that maybe the thing that sticks out in my head is when I\u2019m coming to a child, and\u00a0 I\u2019m rebuking a child, and I\u2019m angry!\u00a0 I\u2019m rebuking that child in anger for them not being loving to their sibling.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 And I know nobody has ever done that before; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I\u2019ve caught myself, on a number of occasions.\u00a0 Sometimes, it\u2019s a sort of knowing glance from my wife\u2014just doing the exact opposite of what I\u2019m instructing that child to do\u2014and just sort of catching myself\u2014and having to go back and repent to God and before that child because of that terrible example that I\u2019m setting, even in the process of trying to correct them and train them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s a good thing we\u2019re not in a group confession here because we could easily go around the rest of the table.\u00a0 You got me on that one.\u00a0 I was actually thinking about an event that occurred.\u00a0 You may not know this about FamilyLife, Voddie; but a number of years ago, we made a statement that what was needed in America was a family reformation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first reformation came around the return to the truth of God\u2019s Word and the Gospel.\u00a0 The second reformation needs to also be around the Gospel; but it also needs to be around the truth of God\u2019s Word and what it says about marriage and about family, about what it means to be a husband and a father, a wife and a mother, and a return to the truth of the Scriptures that we bear the responsibility to pass on the truth about God and the truth about what Christ came to do and redeem us from our sins to our kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s first, and foremost, the responsibility of parents to make that introduction and to introduce their kids to Christ; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting that you say that\u2014talking about a reformation in the family.\u00a0 We had the reformation in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century\u2014a reformation reclaiming the Gospel.\u00a0 We need to have this other reformation, where we\u2019re reclaiming these truths as they apply to the family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut here\u2019s what\u2019s interesting\u2014if you want to find the best and the most plentiful literature on a biblical understanding\u2014Gospel-centered understanding of the family\u2014you\u2019ve got to go back to the reformers\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I knew where you were going on that. Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014because they didn\u2019t miss that.\u00a0 That was part and parcel of the reformation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The men were the instructors.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 It was non-negotiable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you look at men today\u2014and again, I think a lot of us\u2014there\u2019s a heart to want to be more involved dads, to be more engaged; but there\u2019s also a pretty blank screen in terms of what this family shepherding is supposed to look like.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis describes this typical pea-shooting family devotional, around the table.\u00a0 Guys do that once or twice and go, \u201cI am failing at this.\u201d\u00a0 I have found that if guys are failing at a sport, they pick up a different sport and just go play that.\u00a0 Most guys don\u2019t feel like they\u2019re winning at home when it comes to spiritual formation in the lives of their kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, they really don\u2019t.\u00a0 I think what\u2019s even worse than that is they don\u2019t feel like it\u2019s important.\u00a0 They really\u2014if you look at other things in men\u2019s lives\u2014look at how many guys go out and play golf, and they\u2019re <em>horrible<\/em> at it.\u00a0 Okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now watch it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 And they go out regularly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have you seen my golf game?\u00a0 Tell the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have not.\u00a0 I have not.\u00a0 But again, other guys go out and they\u2019re horrible at golf.\u00a0 What I find is that guy doesn\u2019t go out there and say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m horrible at golf.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to do this anymore.\u201d\u00a0 He goes out and he gets a coach.\u00a0 He gets some new clubs made.\u00a0 He gets videos and everything else because he refuses to fail.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I hear from men is that they don\u2019t have a passion for their responsibility and their duty as family shepherds in their homes.\u00a0 That\u2019s why, unlike the golf game, they won\u2019t endure.\u00a0 It\u2019s, \u201cI\u2019m either going to succeed at this immediately,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m not going to do it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the problems and, I think, reasons why men aren\u2019t pursuing this is we\u2019re not putting those men up\u2014those dads who are doing this\u2014we\u2019re not setting them up publicly and talking about what it is they are\u2014what they\u2019re doing, who they\u2019re being, and what their intentionality is all about.\u00a0 What are they left to look at?\u00a0 What\u2019s on the tube in the evenings?\u00a0 Most of the men in the evenings are idiots or nonexistent.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, as men, there\u2019s not much in our lives\u2014if the church doesn\u2019t call men up and show them what it looks like, and what a spiritual man is and what a spiritual man does, there\u2019s not much in our lives to encourage that to happen\u2014let alone formation\u2014spiritual formation in my life, as a man, to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 The great irony, of course, is that, biblically, that\u2019s part of a pastor\u2019s job.\u00a0 If you look at First Timothy 3 and Titus, Chapter 1, you see that pastors are to be chosen, based upon their performance in this area\u2014to lead their homes well, to shepherd their homes well, to raise their children well.\u00a0 The pastor is supposed to model that before the flock, as Peter says.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut how many times, nowadays, do we call a pastor without ever talking to him about his family, let alone visiting his family and examining whether or not he\u2019s doing family discipleship?\u00a0 We don\u2019t even have a category for the pastor and shepherd being qualified, based on his role as a pastor and shepherd in his home.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we sit here and say we don\u2019t have those models, but the Bible makes it clear that there is supposed to be a non-negotiable model of that everywhere you call a man an elder.\u00a0 It goes beyond just our culture dropping the ball.\u00a0 It goes to the heart of us not understanding the essence of the church\u2014what the church is supposed to be, leaders in the church, and how those leaders are qualified.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s no question that what you\u2019re talking about here is the truth.\u00a0 Let\u2019s say there\u2019s a guy listening right now, or maybe his wife, and they\u2019re both thinking, \u201cYou know, that\u2019s what he\u2019d like to be;\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s who I\u2019d like to be.\u00a0 Where, in the world, do I begin because my church is not geared to spiritual formation in a man so that he can be God\u2019s husband and a godly father?\u201d\u00a0 Where should he start?\u00a0 What would you instruct him to do, just in terms of stepping out and engaging the process?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, one of the things, you know, and I talk about this in the book, is that there is this picture in Titus\u2014for example, Titus 1 and Titus 2\u2014there is this picture of this sort of three-pronged approach to discipleship.\u00a0 You have godly older men and women in the church\u2014that\u2019s a place for us to turn\u2014a man to look to godly men who have done this and are doing this.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second place is godly elders in the church\u2014godly, manly elders in the church who are modeling this.\u00a0 That\u2019s what we\u2019re to be looking for; and again, most people when they\u2019re looking for a church, all they\u2019re concerned about is if they like the music.\u00a0 They don\u2019t even consider this, but that\u2019s a whole other story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then the third one is biblically-functioning homes.\u00a0 All of these things work synergistically together.\u00a0 God does not leave the man in a vacuum.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t leave the man isolated.\u00a0 The church is there as the pillar and ground of the truth, and the church is there as the place to which we can and must turn if we want to see these things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, we did something recently at our church.\u00a0 We took a Sunday night and invited everybody to come over and have pizza.\u00a0 Then we got some of the elders and their wives to come up and do a panel.\u00a0 We did this over two evenings.\u00a0 The first evening was a group of elders and their wives.\u00a0 They were to answer this question, \u201cIf I knew then what I know now, what would I have done differently about marriage?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second question is, \u201cIf I knew then what I know now about parenting, what would I have done?\u201d\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t so much, \u201cHere are all of the ways where I won.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 It is, \u201cBoy, I wish I\u2019d known this,\u201d because all of us get to a point, as parents, where we look back and go, \u201cBoy, if I could do it again, I\u2019d do better than I did the first time.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of what you\u2019re saying is, \u201cIt\u2019s the responsibility of the older men and the older women to tell the younger men and the younger women, \u2018Look, I messed up here,\u2019 or maybe, \u2018This worked out for us.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 Pass that along so that these guys know what to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 And quite frankly, that\u2019s why I wrote the book.\u00a0 I mean, we sit there and we think, \u201cOh, if I had it to do all over again,\u201d \u201cOh, if somebody had only told me this,\u201d <br>\u201cIf somebody had only told me that.\u201d\u00a0 How dare I have that \u201caha\u201d moment and not turn around and help the next guy down the chain?\u00a0 That\u2019s part of what motivated this whole process.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I hear you saying are just a couple of key takeaways here to that man who desires to do what you\u2019re talking about but doesn\u2019t feel competent.\u00a0 Decide to regularly go near an older, more mature man.\u00a0\u00a0 Here is what I would say\u2014don\u2019t ask him to mentor you because, if you ask him to mentor you, he\u2019s going to say, \u201cI\u2019m not qualified.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how to do that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust ask if he\u2019ll meet with you because he\u2019ll mentor you as he meets with you.\u00a0 Ask to meet with him once a month and talk about what it looks like to lead your family, how he did it, what he did and lessons he learned, etcetera.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 And go to his home and see it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go; absolutely.\u00a0 And then a second thing is\u2014and I don\u2019t exactly know how you would decide to do this\u2014but in your church, select some other families who may be a lap or two ahead of you in the race of life.\u00a0 Connect with those older families, perhaps socially, perhaps in a growth group\u2014some kind of spiritual growth group.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe get in one of our <em>Homebuilders<\/em><sup>\u00a9<\/sup> Bible studies for couples that we have.\u00a0 Maybe watch a series of videos together, that we have, that would equip you.\u00a0 The point is, \u201cConnect relationally with other people who are living their lives out in this culture because this is no theory that we\u2019re living here.\u00a0 This is life!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And life is coming at all of us at high speed, with lots of evil options; and we all need to be encouraged, \u201cTo stand firm.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And don\u2019t you think the place to start, for a dad, would be to call and get a copy of Voddie\u2019s book and to spend some time reading\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Two.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Get two but a number of years ago, at the <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em><em>, <\/em>we used to have a session for the men that was entitled \u201cDad, the Family Shepherd\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and it was a lot like what you\u2019ve got in your book.\u00a0 It was a one-hour session with the men, calling them to be God\u2019s men as the priests and prophets of their family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Explain to our listeners really what your heart is as you\u2019ve put it between two covers here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 My heart is to see men understand the significance of their role.\u00a0 I think when men understand from a biblical, theological perspective the significance of their role, why they\u2019ve been placed in that role, why it is that the Creator of the universe puts them in a position and then calls us by His title, father\u2014I think when we grasp that, we come to a place where we can sometimes go to despair because it is overwhelming; and it\u2019s beyond us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what I want is for men to go\u2014not toward despair\u2014but I want them to go toward a sense of awe and a sense of dependence upon God, and a sense of committing themselves to this work that is, I believe, the most significant thing that they\u2019re going to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had a sense of the weightiness of the responsibility of being a family shepherd when you were in the delivery room as your wife gave birth to your first daughter.\u00a0 I mention that because I don\u2019t think I did.\u00a0 When we had a child, I remember thinking that my primary responsibility with our kids was to have a good relationship with them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI hadn\u2019t had much of a connection with my dad.\u00a0 He\u2019d been there, but disconnected.\u00a0 So my goal was, \u201cI\u2019m going to love my kids.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to know they\u2019re loved.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have fun together.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have a good relationship; and if I do that, I\u2019ve won as a dad.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou understood there\u2019s more to it than that, and you understood it early on; didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did, and I was terrified because I had not seen that in my life.\u00a0 I was raised by a single, teenage, Buddhist mother.\u00a0 I was raised in drug-infested, gang-infested, south central Los Angeles, California, where I didn\u2019t have friends, even, who had fathers in their homes.\u00a0 Even in my family, my cousins and other members of our family didn\u2019t have fathers in their homes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo when I realized, at that moment, that I was a father and that I hadn\u2019t seen that before, I was overwhelmed by the magnitude of that responsibility and by the fact that I didn\u2019t have any tools in the toolbox to know what to do about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You, undoubtedly, even though you felt it initially, you undoubtedly, as you entered into the process, the weightiness of this responsibility grew.\u00a0 I mean, I don\u2019t think any man when they place that baby in your arms can begin to fathom all the spiritual battles that will be around that child\u2019s life, in attempting to protect them from evil, to guide them in the way of God, to teach them the truth about Him, to teach them how to experience grace when they fail, and what He teaches you through that child about your own selfishness\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and your own brokenness.\u00a0 If you had to summarize for men, though, right now, what it means to be a family shepherd, how would you, in just a brief paragraph, describe this awesome role of family shepherd?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, your family exists for a purpose.\u00a0 God created the family for a purpose, and it is to bring glory and honor to Himself and to His Son.\u00a0 We don\u2019t just get there by accident.\u00a0 Our families have to be led there\u2014hence, the term, \u201cshepherd\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 And so we\u2019re not just shepherding our families arbitrarily.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re shepherding our families towards this greater reality of Christ and this beautiful relationship with His church, toward the triune God and the relationship within the context of the Godhead, and toward this glorious end when all things are summed up in Christ at His return; and there is this wonderful thing\u2014this wedding feast, if you will.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce we understand that, I think we get what it means to be a shepherd\u2014that we are guiding our families toward this Gospel-centered, God-centered perspective on what it means to be here and serve Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we can\u2019t guide them in that direction unless that\u2019s the fundamental core and direction of our own lives.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to be pursuing that, as men, first before we can be leading anybody that direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 The shepherd\u2019s got to know where the green grass is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 But it\u2019s also not sufficient to say, \u201cWell, I\u2019m going to model it; but I\u2019m just never going to say much about it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, because then you leave the door open for any means that your children think is appropriate to get where you are.\u00a0 And if they don\u2019t know how\u2014you know, we talk often about the indicatives and the imperatives in Scripture\u2014and if you don\u2019t understand the indicatives\u2014who we are in Christ, what God has done in Christ\u2014and all you have is the imperatives\u2014then you just use whatever means you believe in in order to get there.\u00a0 Usually, that turns to works righteousness, and that\u2019s the last place that we want our children to go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you don\u2019t teach your children the truth about life and about God from the Scriptures, the world will teach them a lie.\u00a0 That\u2019s guaranteed.\u00a0 That\u2019s what\u2019s happening today.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we\u2019re on this broadcast, talking about this, because, I think, we\u2019re losing a generation of families that does not realize the sacred nature of the truth of this Book\u2014because it guides us into the correct knowledge of Who God is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to go back to what you just said, though, about not modeling what you\u2019re teaching.\u00a0 Share with our listeners a time when you didn\u2019t.\u00a0 It\u2019s always easy to share the great illustrations of Voddie Baucham\u2014the great spiritual leader who led devotions and all of his kids were just around the table, dutifully nodding their heads.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t flipping peas across the table at each other, or throwing things at each other, or sliding down on their seat, underneath the table, like our kids did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019ve been at my house, then.\u00a0 [Laughter]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But seriously, share a time when you were convicted you weren\u2019t modeling what you were teaching.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Boy!\u00a0 That happens to me daily!\u00a0 I mean, I always realize\u2014for example, and I think that maybe the thing that sticks out in my head is when I\u2019m coming to a child, and\u00a0 I\u2019m rebuking a child, and I\u2019m angry!\u00a0 I\u2019m rebuking that child in anger for them not being loving to their sibling.\u00a0 [Laughter]\u00a0 And I know nobody has ever done that before; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I\u2019ve caught myself, on a number of occasions.\u00a0 Sometimes, it\u2019s a sort of knowing glance from my wife\u2014just doing the exact opposite of what I\u2019m instructing that child to do\u2014and just sort of catching myself\u2014and having to go back and repent to God and before that child because of that terrible example that I\u2019m setting, even in the process of trying to correct them and train them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s a good thing we\u2019re not in a group confession here because we could easily go around the rest of the table.\u00a0 You got me on that one.\u00a0 I was actually thinking about an event that occurred.\u00a0 You may not know this about FamilyLife, Voddie; but a number of years ago, we made a statement that what was needed in America was a family reformation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first reformation came around the return to the truth of God\u2019s Word and the Gospel.\u00a0 The second reformation needs to also be around the Gospel; but it also needs to be around the truth of God\u2019s Word and what it says about marriage and about family, about what it means to be a husband and a father, a wife and a mother, and a return to the truth of the Scriptures that we bear the responsibility to pass on the truth about God and the truth about what Christ came to do and redeem us from our sins to our kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s first, and foremost, the responsibility of parents to make that introduction and to introduce their kids to Christ; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting that you say that\u2014talking about a reformation in the family.\u00a0 We had the reformation in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century\u2014a reformation reclaiming the Gospel.\u00a0 We need to have this other reformation, where we\u2019re reclaiming these truths as they apply to the family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut here\u2019s what\u2019s interesting\u2014if you want to find the best and the most plentiful literature on a biblical understanding\u2014Gospel-centered understanding of the family\u2014you\u2019ve got to go back to the reformers\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I knew where you were going on that. Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014because they didn\u2019t miss that.\u00a0 That was part and parcel of the reformation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The men were the instructors.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 It was non-negotiable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you look at men today\u2014and again, I think a lot of us\u2014there\u2019s a heart to want to be more involved dads, to be more engaged; but there\u2019s also a pretty blank screen in terms of what this family shepherding is supposed to look like.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis describes this typical pea-shooting family devotional, around the table.\u00a0 Guys do that once or twice and go, \u201cI am failing at this.\u201d\u00a0 I have found that if guys are failing at a sport, they pick up a different sport and just go play that.\u00a0 Most guys don\u2019t feel like they\u2019re winning at home when it comes to spiritual formation in the lives of their kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, they really don\u2019t.\u00a0 I think what\u2019s even worse than that is they don\u2019t feel like it\u2019s important.\u00a0 They really\u2014if you look at other things in men\u2019s lives\u2014look at how many guys go out and play golf, and they\u2019re <em>horrible<\/em> at it.\u00a0 Okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now watch it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 And they go out regularly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have you seen my golf game?\u00a0 Tell the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have not.\u00a0 I have not.\u00a0 But again, other guys go out and they\u2019re horrible at golf.\u00a0 What I find is that guy doesn\u2019t go out there and say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m horrible at golf.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to do this anymore.\u201d\u00a0 He goes out and he gets a coach.\u00a0 He gets some new clubs made.\u00a0 He gets videos and everything else because he refuses to fail.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I hear from men is that they don\u2019t have a passion for their responsibility and their duty as family shepherds in their homes.\u00a0 That\u2019s why, unlike the golf game, they won\u2019t endure.\u00a0 It\u2019s, \u201cI\u2019m either going to succeed at this immediately,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m not going to do it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the problems and, I think, reasons why men aren\u2019t pursuing this is we\u2019re not putting those men up\u2014those dads who are doing this\u2014we\u2019re not setting them up publicly and talking about what it is they are\u2014what they\u2019re doing, who they\u2019re being, and what their intentionality is all about.\u00a0 What are they left to look at?\u00a0 What\u2019s on the tube in the evenings?\u00a0 Most of the men in the evenings are idiots or nonexistent.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, as men, there\u2019s not much in our lives\u2014if the church doesn\u2019t call men up and show them what it looks like, and what a spiritual man is and what a spiritual man does, there\u2019s not much in our lives to encourage that to happen\u2014let alone formation\u2014spiritual formation in my life, as a man, to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 The great irony, of course, is that, biblically, that\u2019s part of a pastor\u2019s job.\u00a0 If you look at First Timothy 3 and Titus, Chapter 1, you see that pastors are to be chosen, based upon their performance in this area\u2014to lead their homes well, to shepherd their homes well, to raise their children well.\u00a0 The pastor is supposed to model that before the flock, as Peter says.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut how many times, nowadays, do we call a pastor without ever talking to him about his family, let alone visiting his family and examining whether or not he\u2019s doing family discipleship?\u00a0 We don\u2019t even have a category for the pastor and shepherd being qualified, based on his role as a pastor and shepherd in his home.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we sit here and say we don\u2019t have those models, but the Bible makes it clear that there is supposed to be a non-negotiable model of that everywhere you call a man an elder.\u00a0 It goes beyond just our culture dropping the ball.\u00a0 It goes to the heart of us not understanding the essence of the church\u2014what the church is supposed to be, leaders in the church, and how those leaders are qualified.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s no question that what you\u2019re talking about here is the truth.\u00a0 Let\u2019s say there\u2019s a guy listening right now, or maybe his wife, and they\u2019re both thinking, \u201cYou know, that\u2019s what he\u2019d like to be;\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s who I\u2019d like to be.\u00a0 Where, in the world, do I begin because my church is not geared to spiritual formation in a man so that he can be God\u2019s husband and a godly father?\u201d\u00a0 Where should he start?\u00a0 What would you instruct him to do, just in terms of stepping out and engaging the process?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, one of the things, you know, and I talk about this in the book, is that there is this picture in Titus\u2014for example, Titus 1 and Titus 2\u2014there is this picture of this sort of three-pronged approach to discipleship.\u00a0 You have godly older men and women in the church\u2014that\u2019s a place for us to turn\u2014a man to look to godly men who have done this and are doing this.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second place is godly elders in the church\u2014godly, manly elders in the church who are modeling this.\u00a0 That\u2019s what we\u2019re to be looking for; and again, most people when they\u2019re looking for a church, all they\u2019re concerned about is if they like the music.\u00a0 They don\u2019t even consider this, but that\u2019s a whole other story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then the third one is biblically-functioning homes.\u00a0 All of these things work synergistically together.\u00a0 God does not leave the man in a vacuum.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t leave the man isolated.\u00a0 The church is there as the pillar and ground of the truth, and the church is there as the place to which we can and must turn if we want to see these things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, we did something recently at our church.\u00a0 We took a Sunday night and invited everybody to come over and have pizza.\u00a0 Then we got some of the elders and their wives to come up and do a panel.\u00a0 We did this over two evenings.\u00a0 The first evening was a group of elders and their wives.\u00a0 They were to answer this question, \u201cIf I knew then what I know now, what would I have done differently about marriage?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second question is, \u201cIf I knew then what I know now about parenting, what would I have done?\u201d\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t so much, \u201cHere are all of the ways where I won.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 It is, \u201cBoy, I wish I\u2019d known this,\u201d because all of us get to a point, as parents, where we look back and go, \u201cBoy, if I could do it again, I\u2019d do better than I did the first time.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of what you\u2019re saying is, \u201cIt\u2019s the responsibility of the older men and the older women to tell the younger men and the younger women, \u2018Look, I messed up here,\u2019 or maybe, \u2018This worked out for us.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 Pass that along so that these guys know what to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 And quite frankly, that\u2019s why I wrote the book.\u00a0 I mean, we sit there and we think, \u201cOh, if I had it to do all over again,\u201d \u201cOh, if somebody had only told me this,\u201d <br>\u201cIf somebody had only told me that.\u201d\u00a0 How dare I have that \u201caha\u201d moment and not turn around and help the next guy down the chain?\u00a0 That\u2019s part of what motivated this whole process.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I hear you saying are just a couple of key takeaways here to that man who desires to do what you\u2019re talking about but doesn\u2019t feel competent.\u00a0 Decide to regularly go near an older, more mature man.\u00a0\u00a0 Here is what I would say\u2014don\u2019t ask him to mentor you because, if you ask him to mentor you, he\u2019s going to say, \u201cI\u2019m not qualified.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how to do that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust ask if he\u2019ll meet with you because he\u2019ll mentor you as he meets with you.\u00a0 Ask to meet with him once a month and talk about what it looks like to lead your family, how he did it, what he did and lessons he learned, etcetera.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 And go to his home and see it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go; absolutely.\u00a0 And then a second thing is\u2014and I don\u2019t exactly know how you would decide to do this\u2014but in your church, select some other families who may be a lap or two ahead of you in the race of life.\u00a0 Connect with those older families, perhaps socially, perhaps in a growth group\u2014some kind of spiritual growth group.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe get in one of our <em>Homebuilders<\/em><sup>\u00a9<\/sup> Bible studies for couples that we have.\u00a0 Maybe watch a series of videos together, that we have, that would equip you.\u00a0 The point is, \u201cConnect relationally with other people who are living their lives out in this culture because this is no theory that we\u2019re living here.\u00a0 This is life!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Voddie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And life is coming at all of us at high speed, with lots of evil options; and we all need to be encouraged, \u201cTo stand firm.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And don\u2019t you think the place to start, for a dad, would be to call and get a copy of Voddie\u2019s book and to spend
