Rainey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Teenage girls are brazen.\u00a0 They\u2019re aggressive.\u00a0 They\u2019re initiating with guys at younger and younger ages\u2014text messaging, emailing.\u00a0 Groups of girls are getting together and targeting young men.\u00a0 There\u2019s sexual and relational aggressiveness toward younger and younger men\u2014many times by older girls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, April 16th.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Would your son know what to do if a young girl in his class started pressuring him, turning up the heat?\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about that today.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition.\u00a0 When you were raising your daughters, one of the things that was a concern to you was what was on the minds of the young men who were calling your daughters and saying, \u201cHey, would you like to go out this Friday night?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had some concern about that; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did have some concern because I was once a teenage boy.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I know how guys think.\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 It caused me to break the silence, as a daddy, and actually interview some of these young men\u2014not some, a bunch of them.\u00a0 It had to be over three dozen young men, over the process of having four daughters, raised to maturity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As you talked with other dads about these interviews you were having, they said, \u201cWhat do you say?\u201d\u00a0 That led you to write a book called <em>Interviewing Your Daughter\u2019s Date<\/em>, which we released a number of years ago; and, by the way, is just now out in paperback.\u00a0 One of the interesting things that happened when that book came out\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget this!\u00a0 I could never have anticipated what happened.\u00a0 We started getting emails from friends who said, \u201cDennis, that may be fine for interviewing your <em>daughter\u2019s <\/em>date, but what about my son\u2019s?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget the email I got from a friend who lives in Southern California.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI\u2019ve got a couple of sons.\u00a0 The girls have spotted them, and they are after them!\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cYeah, yeah, yeah.\u00a0 That\u2019s probably just California.\u201d\u00a0 You know, it\u2019s easy to kind of lay that off on a little area of the country and think, \u201cThat\u2019s just a little subculture out there.\u201d\u00a0 But then the emails came in from all over the country, affirming the same thing and saying, \u201cGive us some help for how we are to raise sons who grow up into adolescence with sexually-aggressive girls.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you say, \u201cThe girls are after them,\u201d you\u2019re saying the girls are after them, not just to ask them out, but the girls are after them\u2014really pursuing them for a physical relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, for whatever reason\u2014and we\u2019ll get into that a bit later\u2014I think these young ladies are looking for their emotional gas tanks to be filled by these young men.\u00a0 These guys are clueless.\u00a0 The boys\u201413, 14, 15, and 16, and on into their 20s\u2014can be clueless about what\u2019s taking place in this young lady\u2019s life.\u00a0 I mean, perhaps she\u2019s got a dad who deserted her as a little girl and she\u2019s just looking for the affection of a male.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She wants love, or she wants status, or there can be a number of things driving it.\u00a0 The point is that what she\u2019s seeing in the movies, or on TV, or what she\u2019s watching her friends do, is, \u201cYou go after the guys.\u00a0 You pursue.\u00a0 You get aggressive.\u00a0 If necessary, you put yourself out there and invite the young man to do more than take you out on a date.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 It\u2019s what prompted, a couple of years ago, us to do a series called \u201cHelping Your Son Deal with Aggressive Girls\u201d.\u00a0 The response was such that we said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 We\u2019re going to create a tool for moms and dads to begin to build into their lives, when they\u2019re boys\u2014that means pre-adolescence, pre-puberty\u2014and help these young men develop a game plan to know how to handle a young lady who is coming onto them\u2014physically-speaking, or emotionally, or perhaps from an intimate standpoint.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So here, over the next couple of weeks, we\u2019re going to be releasing a new book that you\u2019ve written called <em>Helping Your Son Deal with Aggressive Girls<\/em>.\u00a0 The subtitle is: 7<em> Conversations You Need to Have with Your Boy<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You really believe you can have a strategy to get your sons ready for what could otherwise be a\u2014well, I think of it like Joseph and Potiphar\u2019s wife.\u00a0 It could be one of those moments.\u00a0 If your son is not trained to flee, he could be in trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s not just for when they are 13, 14, etc.\u00a0 This is a game plan for a lifetime because a boy becomes a man who will ultimately be tempted by the opposite sex.\u00a0 Now, let me just lay a little groundwork here before we begin this series.\u00a0 I want the listener to know I am not placing all of the blame for sexual immorality on girls.\u00a0 I\u2019m <em>not<\/em> saying, \u201cIt is all their fault.\u201d\u00a0 I am saying our sons need to be equipped offensively to know how to handle it when the opposite sex becomes more than just a little friendly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you\u2019re wondering if that\u2019s a biblical issue, you mentioned Potiphar\u2019s wife.\u00a0 I think of Solomon, who was having heart-to-heart conversations with his son in Proverbs, Chapters 5 through 7.\u00a0 He basically said, \u201cNow son, I want you to hear me.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to run into some girls who are going to wink their eye.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to twist the pearls, and they\u2019re going to invite you in to the inner chamber.\u00a0 What are you going to do son?\u00a0 What are you going to do with that situation?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven the book of Song of Solomon, which is all about sexual love in marriage, also addresses this idea of a young lady who may be a little too inviting with the opposite sex.\u00a0 In Song of Solomon, Chapter 8, verses 8 and 9, it says\u2014and I\u2019m just going to give you a paraphrase here.\u00a0 It says, \u201cI\u2019ve got a little sister.\u00a0 She\u2019s just young; she\u2019s not fully developed yet.\u00a0 If she becomes a wall\u201d\u2014that means she\u2019s not inviting guys to come toward her\u2014\u201cthen you just protect her.\u00a0 You kind of build some guardrails around her.\u00a0 But if she\u2019s a door,\u201d\u2014the writer of Song of Solomon says\u2014\u201cIf she is a door, then you\u2019ve got to build a barricade around her!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn other words, if she is inviting the guys to come see her\u2014to come and partake of her, from an intimate standpoint\u2014then you\u2019ve got to build more than just embattlements around her.\u00a0 It says in the Scriptures, \u201cEnclose her with boards of cedar.\u201d\u00a0 In other words, \u201cBuild a protective fortress around this young lady.\u201d\u00a0 What the Bible is recognizing is there are girls who are going to be aggressive with guys.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can either send your son off into adolescence and manhood, unprepared for what they\u2019re going to face, or you can equip these boys to know how to handle the advances, the innuendos, the looks, the gaze, the aggressive nature of girls.\u00a0 Whether we like it or not, it is out there.\u00a0 In my opinion, it is growing today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s the point.\u00a0 We\u2019ve always known that teenage boys, unless they govern their own hearts and passions, they are going to get aggressive.\u00a0 I think what we\u2019re seeing on the increase is that teenage girls are moving in this direction.\u00a0 What did the emails that we got\u2014what did some of them say?\u00a0 Do you remember?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here\u2019s one that says, \u201cWe have three grown daughters and a 16-year-old son.\u00a0 You would think our family would have experienced plenty of aggressive behavior from boys toward our daughters, but nothing compares with what I see our son going through!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s another one, \u201cMy ten-year-old son was enticed by a fifth-grade girl via email to open another email account so that I couldn\u2019t monitor it, as his mother.\u00a0 I found it and cancelled it.\u00a0 She\u2019s now sending email messages and e-cards to him and two of his friends, in a love quadrangle, that\u2019s brilliantly orchestrated by her.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 At ten years old?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ten years old.\u00a0 And parents go, \u201cOh, now, really?!\u201d\u00a0 Of course, at this point, you might say, \u201cWhat\u2019s a ten-year-old doing with an email account, in the first place?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or some parents would look at this and they would go, \u201cWell, that\u2019s just playful ten-year-old puppy love.\u00a0 That\u2019s no big deal.\u00a0 That\u2019s nothing to worry about.\u201d\u00a0 But you\u2019re saying, \u201cNo, you need to be concerned about this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You do!\u00a0 Here\u2019s another email, \u201cI have two sons who attend public school.\u00a0 Recently, they were talking at the dinner table about girls who grab their behinds in the hallways\u2014talking about grabbing the guys\u2019.\u00a0 My husband and I were shocked.\u00a0 The boys said, \u2018Welcome to public school, Mom!\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s just reality, Bob.\u00a0 You can\u2019t have the kind of programming on TV, the kind of music that\u2019s being listened to, the kind of texting and social media taking place today without a generation of young people getting a message.\u00a0 The message is, \u201cIt is okay,\u201d\u2014in fact, it is encouraged\u2014\u201cfor girls to pursue guys, especially sexually.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright.\u00a0 So those who would say to you, \u201cI think you\u2019re blowing this situation out of proportion.\u00a0 There have always been girls who were flirty or who try to get the boys.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019re saying what you see is something that\u2019s more than that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 When our sons both moved into adolescence\u2014both were handsome young men, attractive.\u00a0 Certainly, the girls had to notice them.\u00a0 We had one of them, who all of a sudden, out of the clear blue, started getting a dozen girls calling him on the phone!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis was back before there was social media.\u00a0 Had it been social media, all of this would have been taking place without either Barbara or I knowing it, unless we were checking their mobile device, or their computer, or their Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> page\u2014whatever they were using for social media.\u00a0 Because it was the telephone, we knew it was happening.\u00a0 Finally, after about a week of this, I decided I would answer the phone.\u00a0 I kind of played a silver bullet at this point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI answered it.\u00a0 A young lady said, \u201cIs (So-and-so) here?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cYes, he\u2019s here.\u00a0 This is his dad, and I just want you to know I really think it\u2019s inappropriate for you to be calling him and pursuing him in this way.\u201d\u00a0 Bob, it was faster than the speed of light.\u00a0 There were <em>no<\/em> phone calls!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The calls ended?\u00a0 They dried up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All 12 girls, who were calling, stopped!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They got the message!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Instantly!\u00a0 It was like they were connected, and I think they were.\u00a0 It was kind of harmless, truthfully, compared to what is happening today; but I see it happening with boys today.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s a game.\u00a0 I think it may be kind of a high-stakes game, in some regards, as these young ladies get a little older and they even reach down to younger boys.\u00a0 I mean, we\u2019ve gotten emails from parents, who\u2019ve told stories\u2014I tell some of these stories in the book\u2014of boys who are working when they\u2019re 14, 15, and 16.\u00a0 Their supervisors are older young ladies\u2014in their 20s.\u00a0 They\u2019re preying upon them.\u00a0 These young men are very na\u00efve and don\u2019t know what\u2019s happening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are some real horror stories of some things that have happened out there.\u00a0 I think what we\u2019re talking about is, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 This does exist.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think we\u2019re overreacting.\u00a0 I do think boys need to be prepared to live all of their lives as men\u2014to know how to handle the wink of an eye, the twist of the pearls, the smile, and the invitation of a young lady or a woman to join them.\u00a0 It\u2019s not going to go away.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What do you think is fueling this?\u00a0 Is it because we\u2019ve got Facebook and Twitter<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> now?\u00a0 Is it because social media makes it easier, or is it the media influence?\u00a0 What\u2019s going on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think most parents have any idea of what most teenagers are watching, in the evenings, on the major networks.\u00a0 Now, most of the parents aren\u2019t watching it.\u00a0 Some of the programs are, I think, actually targeting teens with messaging that is flagrantly ignoring any boundaries of things being right or wrong.\u00a0 It\u2019s just girls seducing guys!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve got a generation of boys and girls who are feeding off of this.\u00a0 They\u2019re developing their worldview\u2014not from the Bible\u2014not from parents, who have built into their lives around moral character, and choosing right and not wrong, and being wise and not foolish.\u00a0 They\u2019re building their worldview around what\u2019s in media\u2014what they\u2019re reading on Facebook.\u00a0 As a result, they\u2019re building their house on sand\u2014as Jesus would say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If mom and dad are busy, or they\u2019re checked out because the 12-year-old says, \u201cI don\u2019t need you anymore,\u201d and mom and dad back off, or if there\u2019s only a mom or a dad in the picture, the lack of that kind of supervision and reinforcement of these standards can have an impact; don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It can.\u00a0 Bob, here\u2019s the big idea that I want mom, and dad, or a grandmother, or grandparent, or maybe an aunt, or an uncle to catch.\u00a0 That is, \u201cWe need to prepare our elementary-aged boys and girls for adolescence.\u201d\u00a0 FamilyLife has been very intentional over the last, I\u2019d say, 15 years of creating tools for moms and dads to be the winners with their sons and their daughters\u2014to help them be effective to prepare them for these choices.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs you know, we\u2019re just finishing a brand-new version of <em>Passport to Purity<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em><em>.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>I would think the <em>very best <\/em>thing a dad could do with his son, prior to discussing this issue right here, is to lay the foundation by having a <em>Passport to Purity<\/em> weekend.\u00a0 It\u2019s all in a kit.\u00a0 You do it yourself as a dad.\u00a0 It\u2019s a father-son getaway for a Friday night and all day Saturday, where you do something your son really wants to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou listen to four or five CDs.\u00a0 You decide how deep you want to go on the subject matter we\u2019ve covered.\u00a0 I want to tell you something, \u201cI am really proud of this resource!\u00a0 It speaks the language of today\u2019s 10-, 11-, and 12-year-olds.\u00a0 It helps prepare them for the decisions and the choices they\u2019re going to have to make as a young man or as a young lady.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The new version of <em>Passport to Purity<\/em> should be available in about\u2014I think six to eight weeks is when that will be out.\u00a0 If folks want more information, they can go to FamilyLifeToday.com; or just keep listening to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, and you\u2019ll hear about the new <em>Passport to Purity<\/em>,when it becomes available. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis, I know there are some folks who are thinking, \u201cThe real issue here is the boys; it\u2019s not the girls.\u00a0 I know this may be an issue, but come on!\u00a0 If this is 20 percent of the problem, the boys are 80 percent of the problem.\u00a0 Let\u2019s address the big issue.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think parents have done a better job preparing their daughters for the onslaught of predatory guys\u2014teenage boys, who are after their daughters.\u00a0 All in all, I think parents have done a better job with their daughters than they have their sons.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you look at the book of Proverbs\u2014I mentioned this earlier\u2014Proverbs 5-7\u2014I\u2019m telling you, it is heart-to-heart stuff of a dad, talking eye-to-eye with a son\u2014who\u2019s a boy, or a teenager, or a young man\u2014around the issues he\u2019s going to face from the opposite sex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe compares a man who commits adultery like an ox going into a stall at the meat packing factory.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Like an ox to be slaughtered!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Led off to the slaughter; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The issue is, I think, we have to do a better job as parents, having these uncomfortable, yet relevant, conversations with our sons.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we\u2019ve got these seven conversations, written out in the book, to have with your son.\u00a0 They are father-son or mother-son.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be done by the dad.\u00a0 The point is they need to be done.\u00a0 The conversations need to be had.\u00a0 They need to be discussed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not a, \u201cOne-size-fits-all.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not, \u201cOne-time-fits-all.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s the beginning of a lifetime conversation, with your sons, about the real temptations they\u2019re going to face in real life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019re suggesting to moms and dads\u2014\u201cYou ought to have a series of conversations.\u201d\u00a0 Would you say these are conversations you have one a week, one a night?\u00a0 How would you space out these conversations over time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t do it in a week.\u00a0 I think your son could absolutely short-circuit and overload\u2014kind of fracture.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Stay in his room for a couple of months?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I can picture having this with an 11-, 12-, 13-year-old young man.\u00a0 He\u2019s like, \u201cWhat has happened to Dad?!\u00a0 What has happened to Mom?!\u201d\u00a0 You know? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would spread it out.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think, Bob, it is not a matter of having <em>a <\/em>conversation and you\u2019re done with it.\u00a0 I think if we erred on one side or the other, we probably didn\u2019t have enough follow-up conversations around each of these seven areas like we should have.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we did talk about it on an ongoing basis.\u00a0 I think, as you find ways, in everyday life, to bring godly perspective and wisdom to bear on your son\u2019s life, you\u2019ve got to use those teachable moments, when they come your way, to take all the truth you possibly can into your son\u2019s soul so that his character stands strong in the midst of the temptations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What would be a first conversation you would have to get your son ready for what he may be facing as he moves into adolescence?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want him to understand the value of wisdom.\u00a0\u00a0 If you look at the book of Proverbs--Proverbs begins by saying in Chapter 1, verse 7, \u201cThe fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.\u00a0 Fools despise wisdom and instruction.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLater on, in the book of Proverbs, it says, \u201cThe fear of the Lord is the <em>beginning<\/em> of wisdom.\u201d\u00a0 Wisdom, as I talked about with our kids\u2014especially my sons, as I took them on a Bible study\u2014at a local restaurant\u2014that we\u2019d have before school, when they were 15, 16, 17.\u00a0 I walked them through the book of Proverbs.\u00a0 We unpacked the definition of what wisdom really is.\u00a0 Wisdom is godly skill in everyday living.\u00a0 It\u2019s living life according to God\u2019s perspective.\u00a0 It is living life the way God designed it.\u00a0 Wisdom is the opposite of foolishness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re training your son to be a wise man and not a fool.\u00a0 You\u2019re helping him to look at life through God\u2019s eyes and understand that this thing, called the opposite sex, who is coming after him\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWait a second!\u00a0 Caution, son!\u00a0 You need to keep your guard up and realize what\u2019s happening here may happen to you for a good bit of your life as a man\u2014not only now as a teenager, but well into adulthood.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You, as a parent, need to assume your responsibility for passing on wisdom, which is\u2014repeat after me, \u201cIt is godly skill in everyday living.\u00a0 It is living life the way God designed it.\u201d\u00a0 It means we, as the parents, need to be doing that, as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As we address this subject this week, we\u2019re going to unpack what those conversations should look like and help you get a game plan\u2014help you get a strategy together.\u00a0 You would say the time to start this\u2014you start this with your son when he\u2019s headed off to middle school?\u00a0 When he\u2019s 12 or 13?\u00a0 When\u2019s the right time to start engaging on this subject?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, truthfully, measuring the emails, the Facebook posts, and all of the communication that has come back to us here at FamilyLife, I don\u2019t think you can afford to wait until adolescence to begin the process of talking about how young men and young ladies are to relate to each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s obviously the playful stuff, when they\u2019re in first grade, second grade, you know.\u00a0 \u201cLittle Johnny got kissed by a girl.\u201d\u00a0 Parents don\u2019t need to go whacko about childishness\u2014something that clearly is not necessarily wrong\u2014but it is just childish behavior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut there will come a point where you, as a parent, begin to realize the stakes are increasing with your son.\u00a0 You need to begin addressing these issues in a timely, diplomatic, heart-to-heart fashion.\u00a0 Could you overstep your bounds and say too much?\u00a0 Sure, you could do that.\u00a0 But I guess I\u2019d rather encourage parents to go too far, rather than be silent or to not go far enough, because the issue is going to keep on coming.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we\u2019ve said, \u201cAll the way, through adolescence, into young adulthood, on into manhood\u2014these are lessons that I think a father should pass on to his son\u201d\u2014a mother, a grandmother, a grandfather.\u00a0 I think it takes the entire family, around these issues, building into our sons\u2019 lives, to help them be wise young men and to be men who choose right rather than wrong.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you start having these conversations early when your son is nine, or ten, or 11.\u00a0 If you didn\u2019t have them then and your son is 15, or 16, or 17, get a game plan.\u00a0 You can still engage on this issue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, this week, we Rainey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Teenage girls are brazen.\u00a0 They\u2019re aggressive.\u00a0 They\u2019re initiating with guys at younger and younger ages\u2014text messaging, emailing.\u00a0 Groups of girls are getting together and targeting young men.\u00a0 There\u2019s sexual and relational aggressiveness toward younger and younger men\u2014many times by older girls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, April 16th.\u00a0 Our host is the President of to talk about that today.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition.\u00a0 When you were raising your daughters, one of the things that was a concern to you was what was on the minds of the young men who were calling your daughters and saying, \u201cHey, would you like to go out this Friday night?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had some concern about that; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did have some concern because I was once a teenage boy.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I know how guys think.\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 It caused me to break the silence, as a daddy, and actually interview some of these young men\u2014not some, a bunch of them.\u00a0 It had to be over three dozen young men, over the process of having four daughters, raised to maturity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As you talked with other dads about these interviews you were having, they said, \u201cWhat do you say?\u201d\u00a0 That led you to write a book called <em>Interviewing Your Daughter\u2019s Date<\/em>, which we released a number of years ago; and, by the way, is just now out in paperback.\u00a0 One of the interesting things that happened when that book came out\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget this!\u00a0 I could never have anticipated what happened.\u00a0 We started getting emails from friends who said, \u201cDennis, that may be fine for interviewing your <em>daughter\u2019s <\/em>date, but what about my son\u2019s?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget the email I got from a friend who lives in Southern California.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI\u2019ve got a couple of sons.\u00a0 The girls have spotted them, and they are after them!\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cYeah, yeah, yeah.\u00a0 That\u2019s probably just California.\u201d\u00a0 You know, it\u2019s easy to kind of lay that off on a little area of the country and think, \u201cThat\u2019s just a little subculture out there.\u201d\u00a0 But then the emails came in from all over the country, affirming the same thing and saying, \u201cGive us some help for how we are to raise sons who grow up into adolescence with sexually-aggressive girls.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you say, \u201cThe girls are after them,\u201d you\u2019re saying the girls are after them, not just to ask them out, but the girls are after them\u2014really pursuing them for a physical relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, for whatever reason\u2014and we\u2019ll get into that a bit later\u2014I think these young ladies are looking for their emotional gas tanks to be filled by these young men.\u00a0 These guys are clueless.\u00a0 The boys\u201413, 14, 15, and 16, and on into their 20s\u2014can be clueless about what\u2019s taking place in this young lady\u2019s life.\u00a0 I mean, perhaps she\u2019s got a dad who deserted her as a little girl and she\u2019s just looking for the affection of a male.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She wants love, or she wants status, or there can be a number of things driving it.\u00a0 The point is that what she\u2019s seeing in the movies, or on TV, or what she\u2019s watching her friends do, is, \u201cYou go after the guys.\u00a0 You pursue.\u00a0 You get aggressive.\u00a0 If necessary, you put yourself out there and invite the young man to do more than take you out on a date.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 It\u2019s what prompted, a couple of years ago, us to do a series called \u201cHelping Your Son Deal with Aggressive Girls\u201d.\u00a0 The response was such that we said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 We\u2019re going to create a tool for moms and dads to begin to build into their lives, when they\u2019re boys\u2014that means pre-adolescence, pre-puberty\u2014and help these young men develop a game plan to know how to handle a young lady who is coming onto them\u2014physically-speaking, or emotionally, or perhaps from an intimate standpoint.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So here, over the next couple of weeks, we\u2019re going to be releasing a new book that you\u2019ve written called <em>Helping Your Son Deal with Aggressive Girls<\/em>.\u00a0 The subtitle is: 7<em> Conversations You Need to Have with Your Boy<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You really believe you can have a strategy to get your sons ready for what could otherwise be a\u2014well, I think of it like Joseph and Potiphar\u2019s wife.\u00a0 It could be one of those moments.\u00a0 If your son is not trained to flee, he could be in trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s not just for when they are 13, 14, etc.\u00a0 This is a game plan for a lifetime because a boy becomes a man who will ultimately be tempted by the opposite sex.\u00a0 Now, let me just lay a little groundwork here before we begin this series.\u00a0 I want the listener to know I am not placing all of the blame for sexual immorality on girls.\u00a0 I\u2019m <em>not<\/em> saying, \u201cIt is all their fault.\u201d\u00a0 I am saying our sons need to be equipped offensively to know how to handle it when the opposite sex becomes more than just a little friendly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you\u2019re wondering if that\u2019s a biblical issue, you mentioned Potiphar\u2019s wife.\u00a0 I think of Solomon, who was having heart-to-heart conversations with his son in Proverbs, Chapters 5 through 7.\u00a0 He basically said, \u201cNow son, I want you to hear me.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to run into some girls who are going to wink their eye.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to twist the pearls, and they\u2019re going to invite you in to the inner chamber.\u00a0 What are you going to do son?\u00a0 What are you going to do with that situation?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven the book of Song of Solomon, which is all about sexual love in marriage, also addresses this idea of a young lady who may be a little too inviting with the opposite sex.\u00a0 In Song of Solomon, Chapter 8, verses 8 and 9, it says\u2014and I\u2019m just going to give you a paraphrase here.\u00a0 It says, \u201cI\u2019ve got a little sister.\u00a0 She\u2019s just young; she\u2019s not fully developed yet.\u00a0 If she becomes a wall\u201d\u2014that means she\u2019s not inviting guys to come toward her\u2014\u201cthen you just protect her.\u00a0 You kind of build some guardrails around her.\u00a0 But if she\u2019s a door,\u201d\u2014the writer of Song of Solomon says\u2014\u201cIf she is a door, then you\u2019ve got to build a barricade around her!\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn other words, if she is inviting the guys to come see her\u2014to come and partake of her, from an intimate standpoint\u2014then you\u2019ve got to build more than just embattlements around her.\u00a0 It says in the Scriptures, \u201cEnclose her with boards of cedar.\u201d\u00a0 In other words, \u201cBuild a protective fortress around this young lady.\u201d\u00a0 What the Bible is recognizing is there are girls who are going to be aggressive with guys.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can either send your son off into adolescence and manhood, unprepared for what they\u2019re going to face, or you can equip these boys to know how to handle the advances, the innuendos, the looks, the gaze, the aggressive nature of girls.\u00a0 Whether we like it or not, it is out there.\u00a0 In my opinion, it is growing today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s the point.\u00a0 We\u2019ve always known that teenage boys, unless they govern their own hearts and passions, they are going to get aggressive.\u00a0 I think what we\u2019re seeing on the increase is that teenage girls are moving in this direction.\u00a0 What did the emails that we got\u2014what did some of them say?\u00a0 Do you remember?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here\u2019s one that says, \u201cWe have three grown daughters and a 16-year-old son.\u00a0 You would think our family would have experienced plenty of aggressive behavior from boys toward our daughters, but nothing compares with what I see our son going through!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s another one, \u201cMy ten-year-old son was enticed by a fifth-grade girl via email to open another email account so that I couldn\u2019t monitor it, as his mother.\u00a0 I found it and cancelled it.\u00a0 She\u2019s now sending email messages and e-cards to him and two of his friends, in a love quadrangle, that\u2019s brilliantly orchestrated by her.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 At ten years old?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ten years old.\u00a0 And parents go, \u201cOh, now, really?!\u201d\u00a0 Of course, at this point, you might say, \u201cWhat\u2019s a ten-year-old doing with an email account, in the first place?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or some parents would look at this and they would go, \u201cWell, that\u2019s just playful ten-year-old puppy love.\u00a0 That\u2019s no big deal.\u00a0 That\u2019s nothing to worry about.\u201d\u00a0 But you\u2019re saying, \u201cNo, you need to be concerned about this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You do!\u00a0 Here\u2019s another email, \u201cI have two sons who attend public school.\u00a0 Recently, they were talking at the dinner table about girls who grab their behinds in the hallways\u2014talking about grabbing the guys\u2019.\u00a0 My husband and I were shocked.\u00a0 The boys said, \u2018Welcome to public school, Mom!\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s just reality, Bob.\u00a0 You can\u2019t have the kind of programming on TV, the kind of music that\u2019s being listened to, the kind of texting and social media taking place today without a generation of young people getting a message.\u00a0 The message is, \u201cIt is okay,\u201d\u2014in fact, it is encouraged\u2014\u201cfor girls to pursue guys, especially sexually.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright.\u00a0 So those who would say to you, \u201cI think you\u2019re blowing this situation out of proportion.\u00a0 There have always been girls who were flirty or who try to get the boys.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019re saying what you see is something that\u2019s more than that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 When our sons both moved into adolescence\u2014both were handsome young men, attractive.\u00a0 Certainly, the girls had to notice them.\u00a0 We had one of them, who all of a sudden, out of the clear blue, started getting a dozen girls calling him on the phone!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis was back before there was social media.\u00a0 Had it been social media, all of this would have been taking place without either Barbara or I knowing it, unless we were checking their mobile device, or their computer, or their Facebook<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> page\u2014whatever they were using for social media.\u00a0 Because it was the telephone, we knew it was happening.\u00a0 Finally, after about a week of this, I decided I would answer the phone.\u00a0 I kind of played a silver bullet at this point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI answered it.\u00a0 A young lady said, \u201cIs (So-and-so) here?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cYes, he\u2019s here.\u00a0 This is his dad, and I just want you to know I really think it\u2019s inappropriate for you to be calling him and pursuing him in this way.\u201d\u00a0 Bob, it was faster than the speed of light.\u00a0 There were <em>no<\/em> phone calls!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The calls ended?\u00a0 They dried up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All 12 girls, who were calling, stopped!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They got the message!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Instantly!\u00a0 It was like they were connected, and I think they were.\u00a0 It was kind of harmless, truthfully, compared to what is happening today; but I see it happening with boys today.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s a game.\u00a0 I think it may be kind of a high-stakes game, in some regards, as these young ladies get a little older and they even reach down to younger boys.\u00a0 I mean, we\u2019ve gotten emails from parents, who\u2019ve told stories\u2014I tell some of these stories in the book\u2014of boys who are working when they\u2019re 14, 15, and 16.\u00a0 Their supervisors are older young ladies\u2014in their 20s.\u00a0 They\u2019re preying upon them.\u00a0 These young men are very na\u00efve and don\u2019t know what\u2019s happening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are some real horror stories of some things that have happened out there.\u00a0 I think what we\u2019re talking about is, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 This does exist.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think we\u2019re overreacting.\u00a0 I do think boys need to be prepared to live all of their lives as men\u2014to know how to handle the wink of an eye, the twist of the pearls, the smile, and the invitation of a young lady or a woman to join them.\u00a0 It\u2019s not going to go away.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What do you think is fueling this?\u00a0 Is it because we\u2019ve got Facebook and Twitter<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> now?\u00a0 Is it because social media makes it easier, or is it the media influence?\u00a0 What\u2019s going on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think most parents have any idea of what most teenagers are watching, in the evenings, on the major networks.\u00a0 Now, most of the parents aren\u2019t watching it.\u00a0 Some of the programs are, I think, actually targeting teens with messaging that is flagrantly ignoring any boundaries of things being right or wrong.\u00a0 It\u2019s just girls seducing guys!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve got a generation of boys and girls who are feeding off of this.\u00a0 They\u2019re developing their worldview\u2014not from the Bible\u2014not from parents, who have built into their lives around moral character, and choosing right and not wrong, and being wise and not foolish.\u00a0 They\u2019re building their worldview around what\u2019s in media\u2014what they\u2019re reading on Facebook.\u00a0 As a result, they\u2019re building their house on sand\u2014as Jesus would say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If mom and dad are busy, or they\u2019re checked out because the 12-year-old says, \u201cI don\u2019t need you anymore,\u201d and mom and dad back off, or if there\u2019s only a mom or a dad in the picture, the lack of that kind of supervision and reinforcement of these standards can have an impact; don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It can.\u00a0 Bob, here\u2019s the big idea that I want mom, and dad, or a grandmother, or grandparent, or maybe an aunt, or an uncle to catch.\u00a0 That is, \u201cWe need to prepare our elementary-aged boys and girls for adolescence.\u201d\u00a0 FamilyLife has been very intentional over the last, I\u2019d say, 15 years of creating tools for moms and dads to be the winners with their sons and their daughters\u2014to help them be effective to prepare them for these choices.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs you know, we\u2019re just finishing a brand-new version of <em>Passport to Purity<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em><em>.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>I would think the <em>very best <\/em>thing a dad could do with his son, prior to discussing this issue right here, is to lay the foundation by having a <em>Passport to Purity<\/em> weekend.\u00a0 It\u2019s all in a kit.\u00a0 You do it yourself as a dad.\u00a0 It\u2019s a father-son getaway for a Friday night and all day Saturday, where you do something your son really wants to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou listen to four or five CDs.\u00a0 You decide how deep you want to go on the subject matter we\u2019ve covered.\u00a0 I want to tell you something, \u201cI am really proud of this resource!\u00a0 It speaks the language of today\u2019s 10-, 11-, and 12-year-olds.\u00a0 It helps prepare them for the decisions and the choices they\u2019re going to have to make as a young man or as a young lady.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The new version of <em>Passport to Purity<\/em> should be available in about\u2014I it\u2019s not the girls.\u00a0 I know this may be an issue, but come on!\u00a0 If this is 20 percent of the problem, the boys are 80 percent of the problem.\u00a0 Let\u2019s address the big issue.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think parents have done a better job preparing their daughters for the onslaught of predatory guys\u2014teenage boys, who are after their daughters.\u00a0 All in all, I think parents have done a better job with their daughters than they have their sons.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you look at the book of Proverbs\u2014I mentioned this earlier\u2014Proverbs 5-7\u2014I\u2019m telling you, it is heart-to-heart stuff of a dad, talking eye-to-eye with a son\u2014who\u2019s a boy, or a teenager, or a young man\u2014around the issues he\u2019s going to face from the opposite sex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe compares a man who commits adultery like an ox going into a stall at the meat packing factory.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Like an ox to be slaughtered!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Led off to the slaughter; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The issue is, I think, we have to do a better job as parents, having these uncomfortable, yet relevant, conversations with our sons.\u00a0 That\u2019s why we\u2019ve got these seven conversations, written out in the book, to have with your son.\u00a0 They are father-son or mother-son.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be done by the dad.\u00a0 The point is they need to be done.\u00a0 The conversations need to be had.\u00a0 They need to be discussed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not a, \u201cOne-size-fits-all.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not, \u201cOne-time-fits-all.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s the beginning of a lifetime conversation, with your sons, about the real temptations they\u2019re going to face in real life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019re suggesting to moms and dads\u2014\u201cYou ought to have a series of conversations.\u201d\u00a0 Would you say these are conversations you have one a week, one a night?\u00a0 How would you space out these conversations over time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t do it in a week.\u00a0 I think your son could absolutely short-circuit and overload\u2014kind of fracture.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Stay in his room for a couple of months?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I can picture having this with an 11-, 12-, 13-year-old young man.\u00a0 He\u2019s like, \u201cWhat has happened to Dad?!\u00a0 What has happened to Mom?!\u201d\u00a0 You know? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would spread it out.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think, Bob, it is not a matter of having <em>a <\/em>conversation and you\u2019re done with it.\u00a0 I think if we erred on one side or the other, we probably didn\u2019t have enough follow-up conversations around each of these seven areas like we should have.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we did talk about it on an ongoing basis.\u00a0 I think, as you find ways, in everyday life, to bring godly perspective and wisdom to bear on your son\u2019s life, you\u2019ve got to use those teachable moments, when they come your way, to take all the truth you possibly can into your son\u2019s soul so that his character stands strong in the midst of the temptations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What would be a first conversation you would have to get your son ready for what he may be facing as he moves into adolescence?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want him to understand the value of wisdom.\u00a0\u00a0 If you look at the book of Proverbs--Proverbs begins by saying in Chapter 1, verse 7, \u201cThe fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.\u00a0 Fools despise wisdom and instruction.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLater on, in the book of Proverbs, it says, \u201cThe fear of the Lord is the <em>beginning<\/em> of wisdom.\u201d\u00a0 Wisdom, as I talked about with our kids\u2014especially my sons, as I took them on a Bible study\u2014at a local restaurant\u2014that we\u2019d have before school, when they were 15, 16, 17.\u00a0 I walked them through the book of Proverbs.\u00a0 We unpacked the definition of what wisdom really is.\u00a0 Wisdom is godly skill in everyday living.\u00a0 It\u2019s living life according to God\u2019s perspective.\u00a0 It is living life the way God designed it.\u00a0 Wisdom is the opposite of foolishness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re training your son to be a wise man and not a fool.\u00a0 You\u2019re helping him to look at life through God\u2019s eyes and understand that this thing, called the opposite sex, who is coming after him\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWait a second!\u00a0 Caution, son!\u00a0 You need to keep your guard up and realize what\u2019s happening here may happen to you for a good bit of your life as a man\u2014not only now as a teenager, but well into adulthood.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You, as a parent, need to assume your responsibility for passing on wisdom, which is\u2014repeat after me, \u201cIt is godly skill in everyday living.\u00a0 It is living life the way God designed it.\u201d\u00a0 It means we, as the parents, need to be doing that, as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As we address this subject this week, we\u2019re going to unpack what those conversations should look like and help you get a game plan\u2014help you get a strategy together.\u00a0 You would say the time to start this\u2014you start this with your son when he\u2019s headed off to middle school?\u00a0 When he\u2019s 12 or 13?\u00a0 When\u2019s the right time to start engaging on this subject?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, truthfully, measuring the emails, the Facebook posts, and all of the communication that has come back to us here at FamilyLife, I don\u2019t think you can afford to wait until adolescence to begin the process of talking about how young men and young ladies are to relate to each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s obviously the playful stuff, when they\u2019re in first grade, second grade, you know.\u00a0 \u201cLittle Johnny got kissed by a girl.\u201d\u00a0 Parents don\u2019t need to go whacko about childishness\u2014something that clearly is not necessarily wrong\u2014but it is just childish behavior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut there will come a point where you, as a parent, begin to realize the stakes are increasing with your son.\u00a0 You need to begin addressing these issues in a timely, diplomatic, heart-to-heart fashion.\u00a0 Could you overstep your bounds and say too much?\u00a0 Sure, you could do that.\u00a0 But I guess I\u2019d rather encourage parents to go too far, rather than be silent or to not go far enough, because the issue is going to keep on coming.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we\u2019ve said, \u201cAll the way, through adolescence, into young adulthood, on into manhood\u2014these are lessons that I think a father should pass on to his son\u201d\u2014a mother, a grandmother, a grandfather.\u00a0 I think it takes the entire family, around these issues, building into our sons\u2019 lives, to help them be wise young men and to be men who choose right rather than wrong.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you start having these conversations early when your son is nine, or ten, or 11.\u00a0 If you didn\u2019t have them then and your son is 15, or 16, or 17, get a game plan.\u00a0 You can still engage on this issue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, this week, we
