The month of November is my birthday month.\u00a0 I always go and have all those tests that you need to have.\u00a0 You know, \u201cTime to get that old mammogram.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I went, and for the first time\u2014I always get it year by year\u2014I got a call back. He said, \u201cMrs. Loritts, you need to come in because we need to check your mammogram. Something showed up.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy little fear buddies surrounded me and distorted reality. That first one I talked about was doing a number on me. I was trying to be good; I was trying to be good.\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo, I\u2019m not going to fear. It was just a misunderstanding with the mammogram.\u201d I\u2019m walking in the mall, crying, and saying, \u201cGod, what is happening?\u00a0 I\u2019m having an emotional meltdown in October and now a physical breakdown in November.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Can I get through this year?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, April 10<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 You\u2019ve had those emotional meltdowns; right?\u2014where one thing after another is coming your way.\u00a0 What do you do about it?\u00a0 We\u2019ll hear what Karen Loritts did, today.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, you are kind of a perfect enunciation guy\u2014I don\u2019t know if you are that much into grammar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s perfect.\u00a0 I try to be clear and precise, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you\u2019re pretty\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re on it.\u00a0 You\u2019re on it.\u00a0 When it comes to the word imperative, what do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Imperative is something that must be\u2014must happen.\u00a0 If something is imperative, it is essential; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If it is an imperative and somebody was about to give you five or six imperatives on how to handle fear, what would you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d get a pen out.\u00a0 I would take some notes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that is good advice, here at the start of the broadcast.\u00a0 We are going to air a message given at a <em>true woman<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> conference a couple of years ago by Karen Loritts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKaren and her husband Crawford speak at our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage conferences.\u00a0 They are great friends.\u00a0 Crawford is a board member of FamilyLife.\u00a0 This message\u2014well, you were there.\u00a0 You heard the message, and you liked it so much you just wanted to give our listeners a taste of what women can experience at these <em>true woman<\/em> conferences and be ministered to at the same time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Now, I saw how women at the <em>true woman08<\/em> event responded to Karen\u2019s message, which I thought it was very practical and very biblical.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cThis is something we ought to share with our listeners;\u201d and we, also, wanted to let our listeners know about the <em>true woman12<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> event that\u2019s going to be hosted by <em>Revive Our Hearts<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, later this year.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be in September in Indianapolis, and I\u2019m going to be the emcee for that event.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was glad you mentioned that because I think probably there might have been a listener or two wondering, \u201cWhy was Bob at the <em>true woman<\/em> conference?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was there helping out and serving.\u00a0 I also serve on the advisory board for <em>Revive Our Hearts.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>I\u2019m going to be at <em>true woman12<\/em> in Indianapolis, along with Nancy Leigh DeMoss, Mary Kassian, Joni Eareckson Tada, Janet Parshall, and Priscilla Shirer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>If our listeners are interested in more information about the upcoming <em>true woman12 <\/em>event, they can go to our website, FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a link to the <em>true woman<\/em> website there.\u00a0 Again, go to FamilyLifeToday.com for more information about <em>true woman12<\/em>, which is going to be held in Indianapolis in September.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m excited to hear Karen Loritts crack open James, Chapter 4, verses 7 through 10.\u00a0 You might want to get your Bible open and a piece of paper to write down five or six imperatives on how to handle fear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve already heard, in the first part of this message, Karen address what she called her fear buddies.\u00a0 You called them fear fiends.\u00a0 These are the attributes that kind of come alongside fear\u2014things like discouragement, and unbelief, and fear as a thief and how it robs you of emotional and physical health.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Part 2 of this message, she addresses what the Scriptures have to say about how we are to respond to fear, when we experience it in our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Karen:<\/strong> [Recorded message] Now, we get to James, Chapter 4. He led me there.\u00a0 God said, \u201cJames, Chapter 4, Karen, holds the key. All you have to do is work it.\u201d Let me suggest to you out of those verses\u2014James chapter 4, verses 7-10\u2014six imperatives. I\u2019d like you, if you\u2019re taking notes to mark in your Bible, to mark them\u2014James, Chapter 4, verse seven.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first imperative\u2014He says, \u201cSubmit therefore to God.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know about you; but I had to wave the flag and say, \u201cGod, I surrender.\u00a0 I submit to You. I\u2019m not smart enough to pull this off.\u201d\u00a0 It comes with a heart attitude that says, \u201cGod, I surrender to You\u201d\u2014bending the knee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I was going through my emotional meltdown, I had so much pride that I couldn\u2019t even tell my best friends.\u00a0 I had this group of women\u2014that we\u2019d been best friends\u2014pregnant together, potty training together, nursery school together, baby showers, weddings, and graduations\u2014the whole gamut.\u00a0 Now, we\u2019re grandmothers together\u201414 of us\u2014I couldn\u2019t even tell them.\u00a0\u00a0 We were having our retreat.\u00a0 I would just do the regular kinds of, \u201cEverything\u2019s fine.\u201d\u00a0 God nailed me on that.\u00a0 He says, \u201cKaren, you have to put everything out on the table.\u201d\u00a0 Submit, therefore, to God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond thing is, \u201cResist the Devil,\u201d and he will do what, ladies? (\u201cHe will flee.) \u201cHe will flee!\u201d\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t say he might flee.\u00a0 God says, \u201cYou resist the devil, and he will flee.\u201d\u00a0 You take your stand against the devil. You just say, \u201cDevil\u201d\u2014You know what?\u00a0 As I was talking to myself\u2014\u201cno more am I going to become a victim of the enemy.\u00a0 I am a victor through Christ.\u201d\u00a0 So, you need to wear the armor of God and say, \u201cGod, I\u2019ll submit to You;\u201d but also, \u201cI\u2019m going to resist the enemy.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird thing He says, \u201cDraw near to God.\u201d\u00a0 I knew that!\u00a0 I knew that.\u00a0 In the midst of my emotional meltdown, I was still having my quiet times.\u00a0 I have no idea where those prayers went.\u00a0 I have no idea, even today, what I was reading.\u00a0\u00a0 They were empty words.\u00a0\u00a0 Do you understand what I\u2019m saying? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod says, \u201cSubmit; surrender.\u00a0 Put aside that pride and that arrogance\u2014just know everything. Resist the devil.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Resist the temptation to have those pity parties all the time\u2014to believe those fear buddies, \u201cThat you\u2019re nothing, when your kids leave,\u201d \u201cYour life ends when your husband walks out on you.\u201d\u00a0 God says, \u201cResist the devil.\u00a0 Draw near to Me.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 In that quiet time\u2014those quiet moments, those prayer times\u2014draw near to God and ask God to bring someone into your life that can pray with you and for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA fourth thing He says, \u201cDraw near to God,\u201d\u2014verse eight\u2014\u201cCleanse your hands and purify your hearts.\u201d\u00a0 Two things about this: Deal with sin\u2014public and it is external\u2014in cleansing your hands.\u00a0 First John 1:9\u2014I understood about 1 John 1:9, but here was the deal.\u00a0 For many years, I was a bitter and angry woman.\u00a0 Now, verbally I wasn\u2019t angry; but bitterly I was.\u00a0 I was really bitter towards my mom.\u00a0 My mom did a bad job. She could not give me what she did not have, but I could not forgive her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember we had moved down from Pennsylvania to Texas, to be involved in church planting. I was sitting there, just hashing through all the trash that had been involved in my life growing up, \u201cWhy my mother didn\u2019t raise me this way?\u00a0 Why am I struggling so hard as a believer to really grasp this thing about love and making that good commitment to God?\u00a0 How come I wasn\u2019t feeling the presence of God in my life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew that it was because I was harboring bitterness and anger towards my mom.\u00a0 So, I sat down, and I wrote my mom a letter to let her know that I loved her.\u00a0 She knew that I was a Christian, but she had never heard from me how much I loved her, in spite of who I was\u2014not condemning her, but putting it back on myself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember saying, \u201cI just love you, Mom.\u201d\u00a0 My mother never responded to that letter.\u00a0 I saw her like a week after that letter.\u00a0 She never hugged me or thanked me, but I knew that she saw it because I saw it opened on her dresser\u2014and that was okay because I had a burying party.\u00a0 First John 1:9 says, \u201cWhen you cleanse your hands\u201d\u2014in 1 John 1:9\u2014you do two things.\u00a0 You confess it\u2014specifically tell God, \u201cGod, I am angry and bitter with my mom at how she raised me.\u201d\u00a0 Then, repentance means I had to turn my back on what I thought was my right to be bitter and walk away from that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat, ladies, was freedom; but I had to forgive my mom.\u00a0 I had to release her so that I can just look her in the eye and tell her, with a clean heart, that I loved her.\u00a0 It was as though someone had opened a prison door and let me walk out.\u00a0 Cleanse your hands.\u00a0 Do business about your sin, and purify your hearts with an attitude. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLast, but not least, in verse 10, it says, \u201cHumble yourselves.\u201d\u00a0 Humility was not a big thing for me.\u00a0 Like I said, I had a lot of pride; but it\u2019s something when God gets your attention.\u00a0 During my emotional meltdown time, I was getting through October.\u00a0 I was coming up on the month of November.\u00a0 The month of November is my birthday month.\u00a0 I always go and have all those tests that you need to have.\u00a0 You know?\u2014the OB guy, the GP guy\u2014all these letters and things like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to my OBGYN guy, and my little fibroid tumor was staying.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t growing too much. I was cleared for that.\u00a0 Then, I had to go get my mammogram.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 You know what I mean?\u2014(\u201cYes!\u201d)\u2014\u201cTime to get that old mammogram!\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I went, and for the first time\u2014I always get it year by year\u2014I got a call back.\u00a0 He said, \u201cMrs. Loritts, you need to come in because we need to check your mammogram.\u00a0 Something showed up.\u201d\u00a0 Wouldn\u2019t you know it\u2014they couldn\u2019t fit me in for three weeks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy little fear buddies surrounded me and distorted reality.\u00a0 That first one I talked about was doing a number on me.\u00a0 I was trying to be good.\u00a0 I was trying to be good!\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo, I\u2019m not going to fear. It was just a misunderstanding with the mammogram.\u201d\u00a0 I prayed through that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I went to my GP guy, general practitioner.\u00a0 Of all the things, he told me I needed to lose weight, that my cholesterol was gone out the roof, and to watch my blood pressure.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m walking around the mall\u2014I\u2019ve become a mall walker.\u00a0 I thought I had at least ten more years (Laughter) to join the other ladies, and I\u2019m walking in the mall.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m walking in the mall and crying.\u00a0 I said, \u201cGod, what\u2019s happening?\u00a0 I\u2019m having an emotional meltdown in October and now a physical breakdown in November! (Laughter)\u00a0 Can I get through this year?\u201d\u00a0 God had my attention.\u00a0 With me\u2014I don\u2019t know about you\u2014with me, it seems as though, when crisis comes into my life\u2014those challenges\u2014there\u2019s always like a buffet.\u00a0 It\u2019s never like, \u201cHere\u2019s one little thing you have to worry about.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s always a buffet of stuff.\u00a0 God got my attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, just to clear up, the mammogram was fine.\u00a0 I\u2019m still walking the malls\u2014genetics\u2014but God\u2014He brought me through that because my fear was trying to victimize me.\u00a0 I thought that I was just reaching the top of the mountain, and I was almost through\u2014and November came.\u00a0 God is an incredible God and the only one I could talk to\u2014not my girlfriends.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to bore Crawford with that because I don\u2019t want him to fix anything.\u00a0 I had to fix it.\u00a0 \u201cStop listening to yourself.\u00a0 Start talking to yourself.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know what you have to do, but I had to go in my bathroom, and look in the mirror, and say, \u201cKaren, you know what?\u00a0 You\u2019re a wimp.\u00a0 You\u2019ve been doing a lot of whining, a lot of lying because you\u2019re telling everybody else in these conferences all the great things about God, and look at your life.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cGod, I surrender.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what to do, but I know that You know.\u00a0 You know what to do.\u00a0 You do it, God.\u201d\u00a0 God had gotten my attention.\u00a0 When everything checked out, my body was okay.\u00a0 The little fibroid\u2019s still there.\u00a0 We\u2019ve still been working on that little fibroid.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to tell you that I just love what Dr. Piper said, \u201cWimpy theology makes you a wimpy woman.\u201d\u00a0 This is the only thing that makes sense.\u00a0 (Clapping)\u00a0 God is a God that loves us.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what your issue is, whether it\u2019s with your husband, your children, your family, or\u2014like with my mother\u2014and you just see no hope.\u00a0 Can you believe me that there is hope?\u00a0 If God can save a little, black girl from the streets of Philadelphia, from public housing\u2014a woman, who was involved in ministry, who had an emotional meltdown\u2014and He still loves me\u2014what is it that He can\u2019t do?\u00a0 What is it?\u00a0 (Clapping)\u00a0 There\u2019s nothing our God can\u2019t do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me close with this. In Joshua, Chapter 1, Moses is dead.\u00a0 Big Moses\u2014he\u2019s gone.\u00a0 God has to talk to the new man in charge.\u00a0 He tells Joshua, \u201cJoshua, out of all the things I want to say, there are three things I want to say to you.\u201d\u00a0 This is Karen paraphrase. \u201cThree things I want to say to you, Joshua,\u201d Joshua Chapter 1.\u00a0 \u201cBe strong and courageous.\u00a0 Be strong and very courageous.\u00a0 Joshua, be strong and courageous. Don\u2019t tremble.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be dismayed because God is with you!\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know about you\u2014get your hands up, \u201cGod, I surrender to You.\u201d\u00a0 Ladies, we have to be strong.\u00a0 We have to be courageous.\u00a0 Stop listening to yourself.\u00a0 Talk to yourself, and talk to God.\u00a0 Let\u2019s pray.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGod, You are a God that\u2019s incredible.\u00a0 You are the only One that can help us to be strong and courageous; but God, we have to do our part.\u00a0 We have to stop listening to the junk.\u00a0 We have to talk to ourselves about the God that we know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cFather, You called us to submit to You, and with humble hearts, humble ourselves under Your mighty care.\u00a0 Lord, I pray this for my sisters here.\u00a0 Lord, that whatever buffet of stuff that they may have to go through, may they not crumble under the weight of anything but the Word of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBecause You\u2019re a good Father, we won\u2019t embarrass You.\u00a0 We won\u2019t embarrass our families.\u00a0 We won\u2019t embarrass ourselves because we\u2019re going to believe You for Who You are. Give us a resolve to believe.\u00a0 In Your precious name we pray. Amen.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve been listening to Part 2 of a message by Karen Loritts, presented at the <em>true woman08<\/em> conference in Chicago.\u00a0 As I was listening to her, I was thinking, \u201cIs it fair to call fear a sin?\u00a0 Is it sinful to be fearful?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think it is automatically.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had some interesting theological discussions with friends about this; but I think, like a lot of emotions, it can become sinful if we allow it to control us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I\u2019ll give you an illustration.\u00a0 Is it wrong to warn your children about being afraid to go in the street?\u00a0 It is self preservation, at that point.\u00a0 I think God gave us fear, like a red light on a dashboard, to tell us, \u201cSomething is not right.\u201d\u00a0 We need to address something in our soul, our emotions, and our lives.\u00a0 What I think that red light on the dashboard should do to us is it should do what Karen did.\u00a0 It should take us to the Bible and go, \u201cWhat is the truth about how I handle these circumstances?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the flash of emotion that you get that causes you to be fearful about circumstances or events\u2014the question really is, \u201cWhat are you going to do with that?\u00a0 Are you going to respond in a way that believes God?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is where you start.\u00a0 \u201cSubmit to God.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cResist the devil\u201d\u2014that means you resist the lies.\u00a0 Then, \u201cYou draw near to God\u201d\u2014which means you keep on processing Who He is and the truth of His Word.\u00a0 \u201cYou deal with your sin\u201d\u2014at the point where your fear has become worry, and sinful, and controls you.\u00a0 Then, finally, \u201cYou humble yourself.\u201d You just get in a right relationship with God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you Bob, it is so easy to reduce something like this to five points, here in a studio, and be talking to somebody driving down the road, or in their home, or their place of work, or as they jog\u2014but when the rubber meets the road, I\u2019m going to tell you something.\u00a0 I would have to say, \u201cI am susceptible to fear.\u00a0 I have to work at dealing with my worry, dealing with maybe thinking about, \u2018The worst is going to happen.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 It has become, for me, a point of belief\u2014of testing my faith with, \u201cWill I believe the truth about Who God is and what He is up to on planet earth?\u201d\u00a0 He does not come to destroy.\u00a0 He came to bring life, and hope, and encouragement for us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is interesting.\u00a0 We all walk through these valleys.\u00a0 We all go through them, and we all experience it; but not everybody moves to faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 One of the things I most appreciated about Karen\u2019s message was how transparent she was\u2014but also, how biblical it was\u2014how practical it was.\u00a0 I think that is characteristic of what has been the case at the <em>true woman<\/em> events that our friends at <em>Revive Our Hearts<\/em> have hosted.\u00a0 As I\u2019ve mentioned, they\u2019ve got an event happening in Indianapolis this fall.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be in September.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNancy Leigh DeMoss is going to be there, Mary Kassian, Joni Eareckson Tada, Priscilla Shirer, and Janet Parshall.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be there emceeing again.\u00a0 Keith and Kristyn Getty are going to be there as well\u2014helping to lead the October.\u00a0 I was coming up on the month of November. The month of November is my birthday month.\u00a0 I always go and have all those tests that you need to have.\u00a0 You know, \u201cTime to get that old mammogram.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I went, and for the first time\u2014I always get it year by year\u2014I got a call back. He said, \u201cMrs. Loritts, you need to come in because we need to check your mammogram. Something showed up.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy little fear buddies surrounded me and distorted reality. That first one I talked about was doing a number on me. I was trying to be good; I was trying to be good.\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo, I\u2019m not going to fear. right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If it is an imperative and somebody was about to give you five or six imperatives on how to handle fear, what would you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d get a pen out.\u00a0 I would take some notes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that is good advice, here at the start of the broadcast.\u00a0 We are going to air a message given at a <em>true woman<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> conference a couple of years ago by Karen Loritts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKaren and her husband Crawford speak at our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage conferences.\u00a0 They are great friends.\u00a0 Crawford is a board member of FamilyLife.\u00a0 This message\u2014well, you were there.\u00a0 You heard the message, and you liked it so much you just wanted to give our listeners a taste of what women can experience at these <em>true woman<\/em> conferences and be ministered to at the same time. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Now, I saw how women at the <em>true woman08<\/em> event responded to Karen\u2019s message, which I thought it was very practical and very biblical.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cThis is something we ought to share with our listeners;\u201d and we, also, wanted to let our listeners know about the <em>true woman12<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> event that\u2019s going to be hosted by <em>Revive Our Hearts<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, later this year.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be in September in Indianapolis, and I\u2019m going to be the emcee for that event.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was glad you mentioned that because I think probably there might have been a listener or two wondering, \u201cWhy was Bob at the <em>true woman<\/em> conference?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was there helping out and serving.\u00a0 I also serve on the advisory board for <em>Revive Our Hearts.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>I\u2019m going to be at <em>true woman12<\/em> in Indianapolis, along with Nancy Leigh DeMoss, Mary Kassian, Joni Eareckson Tada, Janet Parshall, and Priscilla Shirer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>If our listeners are interested in more information about the upcoming <em>true woman12 <\/em>event, they can go to our website, FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a link to the <em>true woman<\/em> website there.\u00a0 Again, go to FamilyLifeToday.com for more information about <em>true woman12<\/em>, which is going to be held in Indianapolis in September.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m excited to hear Karen Loritts crack open James, Chapter 4, verses 7 through 10.\u00a0 You might want to get your Bible open and a piece of paper to write down five or six imperatives on how to handle fear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve already heard, in the first part of this message, Karen address what she called her fear buddies.\u00a0 You called them fear fiends.\u00a0 These are the attributes that kind of come alongside fear\u2014things like discouragement, and unbelief, and fear as a thief and how it robs you of emotional and physical health.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Part 2 of this message, she addresses what the Scriptures have to say about how we are to respond to fear, when we experience it in our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Karen:<\/strong> [Recorded message] Now, we get to James, Chapter 4. He led me there.\u00a0 God said, \u201cJames, Chapter 4, Karen, holds the key. All you have to do is work it.\u201d Let me suggest to you out of those verses\u2014James chapter 4, verses 7-10\u2014six imperatives. I\u2019d like you, if you\u2019re taking notes to mark in your Bible, to mark them\u2014James, Chapter 4, verse seven.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first imperative\u2014He says, \u201cSubmit therefore to God.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know about you; but I had to wave the flag and say, \u201cGod, I surrender.\u00a0 I submit to You. I\u2019m not smart enough to pull this off.\u201d\u00a0 It comes with a heart attitude that says, \u201cGod, I surrender to You\u201d\u2014bending the knee.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I was going through my emotional meltdown, I had so much pride that I couldn\u2019t even tell my best friends.\u00a0 I had this group of women\u2014that we\u2019d been best friends\u2014pregnant together, potty training together, nursery school together, baby showers, weddings, and graduations\u2014the whole gamut.\u00a0 Now, we\u2019re grandmothers together\u201414 of us\u2014I couldn\u2019t even tell them.\u00a0\u00a0 We were having our retreat.\u00a0 I would just do the regular kinds of, \u201cEverything\u2019s fine.\u201d\u00a0 God nailed me on that.\u00a0 He says, \u201cKaren, you have to put everything out on the table.\u201d\u00a0 Submit, therefore, to God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond thing is, \u201cResist the Devil,\u201d and he will do what, ladies? (\u201cHe will flee.) \u201cHe will flee!\u201d\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t say he might flee.\u00a0 God says, \u201cYou resist the devil, and he will flee.\u201d\u00a0 You take your stand against the devil. You just say, \u201cDevil\u201d\u2014You know what?\u00a0 As I was talking to myself\u2014\u201cno more am I going to become a victim of the enemy.\u00a0 I am a victor through Christ.\u201d\u00a0 So, you need to wear the armor of God and say, \u201cGod, I\u2019ll submit to You;\u201d but also, \u201cI\u2019m going to resist the enemy.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird thing He says, \u201cDraw near to God.\u201d\u00a0 I knew that!\u00a0 I knew that.\u00a0 In the midst of my emotional meltdown, I was still having my quiet times.\u00a0 I have no idea where those prayers went.\u00a0 I have no idea, even today, what I was reading.\u00a0\u00a0 They were empty words.\u00a0\u00a0 Do you understand what I\u2019m saying? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod says, \u201cSubmit; surrender.\u00a0 Put aside that pride and that arrogance\u2014just know everything. Resist the devil.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Resist the temptation to have those pity parties all the time\u2014to believe those fear buddies, \u201cThat you\u2019re nothing, when your kids leave,\u201d \u201cYour life ends when your husband walks out on you.\u201d\u00a0 God says, \u201cResist the devil.\u00a0 Draw near to Me.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 In that quiet time\u2014those quiet moments, those prayer times\u2014draw near to God and ask God to bring someone into your life that can pray with you and for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA fourth thing He says, \u201cDraw near to God,\u201d\u2014verse eight\u2014\u201cCleanse your hands and purify your hearts.\u201d\u00a0 Two things about this: Deal with sin\u2014public and it is external\u2014in cleansing your hands.\u00a0 First John 1:9\u2014I understood about 1 John 1:9, but here was the deal.\u00a0 For many years, I was a bitter and angry woman.\u00a0 Now, verbally I wasn\u2019t angry; but bitterly I was.\u00a0 I was really bitter towards my mom.\u00a0 My mom did a bad job. She could not give me what she did not have, but I could not forgive her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember we had moved down from Pennsylvania to Texas, to be involved in church planting. I was sitting there, just hashing through all the trash that had been involved in my life growing up, \u201cWhy my mother didn\u2019t raise me this way?\u00a0 Why am I struggling so hard as a believer to really grasp this thing about love and making that good commitment to God?\u00a0 How come I wasn\u2019t feeling the presence of God in my life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew that it was because I was harboring bitterness and anger towards my mom.\u00a0 So, I sat down, and I wrote my mom a letter to let her know that I loved her.\u00a0 She knew that I was a Christian, but she had never heard from me how much I loved her, in spite of who I was\u2014not condemning her, but putting it back on myself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember saying, \u201cI just love you, Mom.\u201d\u00a0 My mother never responded to that letter.\u00a0 I saw her like a week after that letter.\u00a0 She never hugged me or thanked me, but I knew that she saw it because I saw it opened on her dresser\u2014and that was okay because I had a burying party.\u00a0 First John 1:9 says, \u201cWhen you cleanse your hands\u201d\u2014in 1 John 1:9\u2014you do two things.\u00a0 You confess it\u2014specifically tell God, \u201cGod, I am angry and bitter with my mom at how she raised me.\u201d\u00a0 Then, repentance means I had to turn my back on what I thought was my right to be bitter and walk away from that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat, ladies, was freedom; but I had to forgive my mom.\u00a0 I had to release her so that I can just look her in the eye and tell her, with a clean heart, that I loved her.\u00a0 It was as though someone had opened a prison door and let me walk out.\u00a0 Cleanse your hands.\u00a0 Do business about your sin, and purify your hearts with an attitude. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLast, but not least, in verse 10, it says, \u201cHumble yourselves.\u201d\u00a0 Humility was not a big thing for me.\u00a0 Like I said, I had a lot of pride; but it\u2019s something when God gets your attention.\u00a0 During my emotional meltdown time, I was getting through October.\u00a0 I was coming up on the month of November.\u00a0 The month of November is my birthday month.\u00a0 I always go and have all those tests that you need to have.\u00a0 You know?\u2014the OB guy, the GP guy\u2014all these letters and things like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to my OBGYN guy, and my little fibroid tumor was staying.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t growing too much. I was cleared for that.\u00a0 Then, I had to go get my mammogram.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 You know what I mean?\u2014(\u201cYes!\u201d)\u2014\u201cTime to get that old mammogram!\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I went, and for the first time\u2014I always get it year by year\u2014I got a call back.\u00a0 He said, \u201cMrs. Loritts, you need to come in because we need to check your mammogram.\u00a0 Something showed up.\u201d\u00a0 Wouldn\u2019t you know it\u2014they couldn\u2019t fit me in for three weeks. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy little fear buddies surrounded me and distorted reality.\u00a0 That first one I talked about was doing a number on me.\u00a0 I was trying to be good.\u00a0 I was trying to be good!\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo, I\u2019m not going to fear. It was just a misunderstanding with the mammogram.\u201d\u00a0 I prayed through that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I went to my GP guy, general practitioner.\u00a0 Of all the things, he told me I needed to lose weight, that my cholesterol was gone out the roof, and to watch my blood pressure.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m walking around the mall\u2014I\u2019ve become a mall walker.\u00a0 I thought I had at least ten more years (Laughter) to join the other ladies, and I\u2019m walking in the mall.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m walking in the mall and crying.\u00a0 I said, \u201cGod, what\u2019s happening?\u00a0 I\u2019m having an emotional meltdown in October and now a physical breakdown in November! (Laughter)\u00a0 Can I get through this year?\u201d\u00a0 God had my attention.\u00a0 With me\u2014I don\u2019t know about you\u2014with me, it seems as though, when crisis comes into my life\u2014those challenges\u2014there\u2019s always like a buffet.\u00a0 It\u2019s never like, \u201cHere\u2019s one little thing you have to worry about.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s always a buffet of stuff.\u00a0 God got my attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, just to clear up, the mammogram was fine.\u00a0 I\u2019m still walking the malls\u2014genetics\u2014but God\u2014He brought me through that because my fear was trying to victimize me.\u00a0 I thought that I was just reaching the top of the mountain, and I was almost through\u2014and November came.\u00a0 God is an incredible God and the only one I could talk to\u2014not my girlfriends.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to bore Crawford with that because I don\u2019t want him to fix anything.\u00a0 I had to fix it.\u00a0 \u201cStop listening to yourself.\u00a0 Start talking to yourself.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t know what you have to do, but I had to go in my bathroom, and look in the mirror, and say, \u201cKaren, you know what?\u00a0 You\u2019re a wimp.\u00a0 You\u2019ve been doing a lot of whining, a lot of lying because you\u2019re telling everybody else in these conferences all the great things about God, and look at your life.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cGod, I surrender.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what to do, but I know that You know.\u00a0 You know what to do.\u00a0 You do it, God.\u201d\u00a0 God had gotten my attention.\u00a0 When everything checked out, my body was okay.\u00a0 The little fibroid\u2019s still there.\u00a0 We\u2019ve still been working on that little fibroid.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to tell you that I just love what Dr. Piper said, \u201cWimpy theology makes you a wimpy woman.\u201d\u00a0 This is the only thing that makes sense.\u00a0 (Clapping)\u00a0 God is a God that loves us.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what your issue is, whether it\u2019s with your husband, your children, your family, or\u2014like with my mother\u2014and you just see no hope.\u00a0 Can you believe me that there is hope?\u00a0 If God can save a little, black girl from the streets of Philadelphia, from public housing\u2014a woman, who was involved in ministry, who had an emotional meltdown\u2014and He still loves me\u2014what is it that He can\u2019t do?\u00a0 What is it?\u00a0 (Clapping)\u00a0 There\u2019s nothing our God can\u2019t do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me close with this. In Joshua, Chapter 1, Moses is dead.\u00a0 Big Moses\u2014he\u2019s gone.\u00a0 God has to talk to the new man in charge.\u00a0 He tells Joshua, \u201cJoshua, out of all the things I want to say, there are three things I want to say to you.\u201d\u00a0 This is Karen paraphrase. \u201cThree things I want to say to you, Joshua,\u201d Joshua Chapter 1.\u00a0 \u201cBe strong and courageous.\u00a0 Be strong and very courageous.\u00a0 Joshua, be strong and courageous. Don\u2019t tremble.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be dismayed because God is with you!\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know about you\u2014get your hands up, \u201cGod, I surrender to You.\u201d\u00a0 Ladies, we have to be strong.\u00a0 We have to be courageous.\u00a0 Stop listening to yourself.\u00a0 Talk to yourself, and talk to God.\u00a0 Let\u2019s pray.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGod, You are a God that\u2019s incredible.\u00a0 You are the only One that can help us to be strong and courageous; but God, we have to do our part.\u00a0 We have to stop listening to the junk.\u00a0 We have to talk to ourselves about the God that we know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cFather, You called us to submit to You, and with humble hearts, humble ourselves under Your mighty care.\u00a0 Lord, I pray this for my sisters here.\u00a0 Lord, that whatever buffet of stuff that they may have to go through, may they not crumble under the weight of anything but the Word of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBecause You\u2019re a good Father, we won\u2019t embarrass You.\u00a0 We won\u2019t embarrass our families.\u00a0 We won\u2019t embarrass ourselves because we\u2019re going to believe You for Who You are. Give us a resolve to believe.\u00a0 In Your precious name we pray. Amen.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve been listening to Part 2 of a message by Karen Loritts, presented at the <em>true woman08<\/em> conference in Chicago.\u00a0 As I was listening to her, I was thinking, \u201cIs it fair to call fear a sin?\u00a0 Is it sinful to be fearful?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think it is automatically.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had some interesting theological discussions with friends about this; but I think, like a lot of emotions, it can become sinful if we allow it to control us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, I\u2019ll give you an illustration.\u00a0 Is it wrong to warn your children about being afraid to go in the street?\u00a0 It is self preservation, at that point.\u00a0 I think God gave us fear, like a red light on a dashboard, to tell us, \u201cSomething is not right.\u201d\u00a0 We need to address something in our soul, our emotions, and our lives.\u00a0 What I think that red light on the dashboard should do to us is it should do what Karen did.\u00a0 It should take us to the Bible and go, \u201cWhat is the truth about how I handle these circumstances?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the flash of emotion that you get that causes you to be fearful about circumstances or events\u2014the question really is, \u201cWhat are you going to do with that?\u00a0 Are you going to respond in a way that believes God?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is where you start.\u00a0 \u201cSubmit to God.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cResist the devil\u201d\u2014that means you resist the lies.\u00a0 Then, \u201cYou draw near to God\u201d\u2014which means you keep on processing Who He is and the truth of His Word.\u00a0 \u201cYou deal with your sin\u201d\u2014at the point where your fear has become worry, and sinful, and controls you.\u00a0 Then, finally, \u201cYou humble yourself.\u201d You just get in a right relationship with God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll tell you Bob, it is so easy to reduce something like this to five points, here in a studio, and be talking to somebody driving down the road, or in their home, or their place of work, or as they jog\u2014but when the rubber meets the road, I\u2019m going to tell you something.\u00a0 I would have to say, \u201cI am susceptible to fear.\u00a0 I have to work at dealing with my worry, dealing with maybe thinking about, \u2018The worst is going to happen.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 It has become, for me, a point of belief\u2014of testing my faith with, \u201cWill I believe the truth about Who God is and what He is up to on planet earth?\u201d\u00a0 He does not come to destroy.\u00a0 He came to bring life, and hope, and encouragement for us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is interesting.\u00a0 We all walk through these valleys.\u00a0 We all go through them, and we all experience it;
