this message\u2014sitting at my table, looking out the window\u2014that all of a sudden\u2014this fear came over me again, and I was being victimized.\u00a0 I started weeping at the table saying, \u201cLord, what in the world am I going to say to those 6,000 women when I am just scared to death to admit that I have fear?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This we\u2019re going to hear today.\u00a0 I was in a room with thousands of women.\u00a0 I was at an event that was hosted by our friend, Nancy Leigh DeMoss, and <em>Revive Our Hearts<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.\u00a0 It was a <em>true woman<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> event, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just wonder how you slipped in on this deal.\u00a0 This is an all-female event, but she\u2019s got you emceeing the event.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I was emcee for that event.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019m going to be emcee again in September when they host the <em>true woman12<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> conference.\u00a0 It\u2019s taking place in Indianapolis at the Indiana Convention Center, September 20 through the 22.\u00a0 Nancy\u2019s going to be there\u2014Mary Kassian, Joni Eareckson Tada, Priscilla Shirer, Janet Parshall, and me, and Keith Getty.\u00a0 The Gettys are going to be there leading worship.\u00a0 Keith and I will be the two men who will be in attendance at the <em>true woman<\/em> event.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe do have information on our website at woman<\/em> event.\u00a0 Karen Loritts shared with the women who were there.\u00a0 Karen is the wife of Dr. Crawford Loritts, who is the pastor of Fellowship Bible Church in Roswell, Georgia, and is also a board member for FamilyLife\u2019s Board of Directors.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Karen, Barbara and I, and Crawford go way back\u2014great friends.\u00a0 They speak at our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup> marriage conferences.\u00a0 They\u2019re just great people.\u00a0 I think you are going to enjoy what Karen has to say about how women deal with fear.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, this is not exclusively a female issue.\u00a0 All of us deal with fear, at some level; but I do think, for a lot of women, this can be a besetting sin.\u00a0 That\u2019s how Karen addresses it in this message.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, this was FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 Here is Karen Loritts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Karen:<\/strong> [Recorded message] Well, we have four children.\u00a0 I knew that I was going to get to this day, where our last one was going to enter high school. I was going to be smart. I really pride myself on having my little act together\u2014you know, dot my \u201cI\u2019s\u201d and cross my \u201cT\u2019s.\u201d So, she was going to go into high school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have all these friends that have gone through menopause and the empty nest. It was something\u2014sort of like a disease that was going to creep up on me. I was now in my 50s. I was working through the menopause thing; and I was worried about, \u201cWould I survive the empty nest?\u201d\u2014which was four years off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI decided I was going to be smart. I was going to prepare myself. I knew that the way we did it when we were first married\u2014before kids was\u2014we were just lovey-dovey\u2014just talking across the table about each other and did all those romantic things.\u00a0 Then, children happened.\u00a0 You sort of have the conversation change a little bit.\u00a0 I knew when our last one would leave the nest\u2014then, I would have to find something else to talk about, and be lovey-dovey, and sit across the table, and talk to Crawford.\u00a0 I started to really nurture our relationship because he\u2019s my best friend!\u00a0 I love that man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew that when Holly would leave for school, that it was just going to be the two of us.\u00a0 I was working on it.\u00a0 So, Holly graduates from high school.\u00a0 Those of you that have prepared your child to leave the nest\u2014maybe to go off to college, or into the work force, or into the military\u2014you know, there are some things you have to get done.\u00a0 My job\u2014that summer after graduation\u2014was to work on her dorm.\u00a0 August the 14th came.\u00a0 We packed all my baby girl\u2019s stuff into Crawford\u2019s SUV\u2014I mean, it was incredible stuff!\u00a0 We drove her down to Xavier University in New Orleans, where she was going to be a pre-med student.\u00a0 Everything was fine.\u00a0 We stayed there for a couple of days.\u00a0 Then, it was time for Crawford to put me back in the car, and for me to leave, and to leave my baby girl in New Orleans. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSeptember was fine.\u00a0 I was just cleaning up stuff and rearranging her room, now that she was gone.\u00a0 Ladies, on October the 19\u2014I\u2019ll never forget that day\u2014I had prepared, all along the way, to be ready when my baby girl left\u2014the last of our four children.\u00a0 On October the 19, I was sitting in our bedroom, at my chair next to my table, having my quiet time.\u00a0 I opened up my Bible.\u00a0 I started reading, and I started sobbing. It was as though someone had turned on a faucet.\u00a0 The next thing I knew, I had tear drops on the Bible. I couldn\u2019t figure out what was happening; and I just remember saying, \u201cLord, something is happening inside of me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt this wave of fear well up in my belly.\u00a0 All of a sudden, this floodgate of tears came, and I couldn\u2019t figure out what it was.\u00a0 Was it my time of the month?\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Crawford was gone, but that was usual since we had been married\u2014so, it wasn\u2019t that.\u00a0 It seems as though, in that house, that the walls of that house were talking to me.\u00a0 I was alone, and I was lonely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had this thought that, \u201cI\u2019m no longer a mother anymore.\u201d\u00a0 My biggest problem, in all of my life, I\u2019m a worrier. I worry about worrying.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of my handicaps.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Anybody here like that?\u00a0 Yes\u2014there\u2019s two of us!\u00a0 I worry about worry, but the other thing that I had was fear.\u00a0 I was so\u2014it was as though this garment of fear was cloaked around me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me tell you some things about fear.\u00a0 Fear has a way of bringing its buddies.\u00a0 So, as I\u2019m going through this thing that I\u2019m going through\u2014and it lasted for several days\u2014I was really\u2014I had what I call an emotional meltdown.\u00a0 For me to say that\u2014I\u2019ve been in ministry now, back then for thirty-something years\u2014but for me to admit that I was having an emotional meltdown\u2014it was an incredible indictment on me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was having an emotional meltdown, but I was cute enough and smart enough to know that I still had to pray.\u00a0 I still kept my speaking schedule. Crawford and I were finishing a book together on parenting.\u00a0 I did all the right things; but I could not shake that fear that was gripping me.\u00a0 I identified at least ten of my fear buddies.\u00a0 Let me just share ten of them.\u00a0 I wrote them down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen fear would overtake me, fear would always bring its buddy called\u2014it distorts reality.\u00a0 Fear told me that, \u201cYou\u2019re no longer a mother.\u00a0 Who are you?\u201d\u00a0 That is ridiculous!\u00a0 But I felt as though my whole identity had just walked away on August 14, down at somebody\u2019s school, and no longer was I a mother\u2014not to say that I had three adult married children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother thing that one of the fear buddies does is it victimizes the person.\u00a0 Fear absolutely beats you up.\u00a0 I remember, just two weeks ago, when I was sitting preparing this message for today\u2014sitting at my table\u2014that all of a sudden, this fear came over me again.\u00a0 I was being victimized.\u00a0 I started weeping at the table saying, \u201cLord, what in the world am I going to say to those 6,000 women, when I\u2019m just scared to death to admit that I have fear?\u201d\u00a0 Fear victimizes a person.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother thing about fear\u2014fear puts stress on the body\u2014physically, emotionally, spiritually, blood pressure problems, stress.\u00a0 Another thing about fear\u2014it alienates the truth, even the truth that we know.\u00a0 God was still with me.\u00a0 I was still a mother, but fear told me that that was all a lie\u2014that no longer was that true.\u00a0 Another thing about fear\u2014fear immobilizes. It freezes; it cripples you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother thing about fear\u2014fear replaces faith. I forgot\u2014or didn\u2019t think about\u2014that perfect love casts out fear.\u00a0 Fear, many times, will replace the faith that we say that we have.\u00a0 Fear disappoints.\u00a0 Fear takes more than it gives.\u00a0 It gives you nothing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow about this one?\u00a0 Fear is afraid of success.\u00a0 When you are fearful, you are afraid of success.\u00a0 I knew about failure and all those things that drew me to failure, but I was afraid of moving forward.\u00a0 Two more things\u2014fear fills the heart with despair.\u00a0 You become hopeless and helpless.\u00a0 Then, the last thing I identified\u2014you probably could come up with another list\u2014fear destroys.\u00a0 Fear takes you and just wants you to walk away into a bottomless pit of hopelessness. It steals away your joy, your victory, your blessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose were my fear buddies, but God\u2014knowing God, He wouldn\u2019t let me stay there.\u00a0 Now, see, when I was going through my emotional meltdown\u2014there were times, ladies, that I didn\u2019t even want to get out of bed.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to tell Crawford because I have the type of husband\u2014he loves me, he\u2019s my servant leader, he wants to protect me\u2014he would want to fix it.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 You know, when you\u2019re having a pity party, you want to be the only and the guest of honor.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 You want to wear your own crown, and you want to just have everything go your way.\u00a0 So, I didn\u2019t really tell him what was happening:\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNothing\u2019s wrong, Honey.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had my own pity party, but God wouldn\u2019t let me stay there.\u00a0 I knew I was in big trouble, that I needed to get out of that bed.\u00a0 I needed to believe God and trust God with every single thing\u2014every fiber of my being\u2014because I didn\u2019t want to move.\u00a0 So, I got out of my bed.\u00a0 I went to the Bible; and of course, the way God is with His Word, He showed me several Scriptures.\u00a0 Let me share with you a couple Scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA couple things about fear that I knew\u2014I read about, but I had forgotten.\u00a0 Fear robs your memory. Several things\u2014jot it down\u2014Psalm 27, verses1-3.\u00a0 Psalm 27 says, \u201cThe Lord is my light and my salvation.\u201d\u00a0 Question: \u201cWhom shall I fear?\u201d\u00a0 Verse 3, \u201cThough a host encamp against me,\u201d\u2014my fear buddies\u2014\u201cmy heart will not fear. Though war arises against me, [in spite of this] I shall be confident.\u201d\u00a0 Philippians 4 says, \u201cBe anxious for nothing, but by everything by prayer bring your fears to God.\u201d Isaiah, Chapter 41, verse 10. I love this! God reminded me\u2014He said, \u201cDo not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.\u00a0 I will strengthen you, surely I will help you.\u00a0 Surely I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLastly, when the children of Israel were being led out of the wilderness\u2014when they got to the Red Sea, they were hemmed in by mountains on one side and the sea and the Egyptian army pursuing them from behind.\u00a0 Moses said to them in Exodus\u2014he said in Exodus 14, \u201cThe Lord will fight for you.\u00a0 All you have to do is be still and stand still.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what I did. I said, \u201cGod, I\u2019m going to shut my mouth.\u00a0 There is nothing that I can say. Lord, I want to make a resolve\u201d\u2014because I had a great relationship.\u00a0 I was a great wife; but, really, I was not a great woman because I was letting fear grip my heart.\u00a0 It was doing so much damage in my own life.\u00a0 I said, \u201cGod, enough is enough.\u00a0 No more will I allow fear to grip me and rob me of my joy and my blessing.\u00a0 God, I want to resolve three things.\u00a0 God, I promise You that I won\u2019t embarrass You.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing I said was, \u201cGod, I won\u2019t embarrass my husband.\u00a0 I made a vow on\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMay 22, 1971, that I would love, honor, obey in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer.\u00a0 I made a vow to love that man.\u00a0 Lord, I\u2019m going to do that, no matter hormones, PMS, empty nest.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to love that man the way you want me to love him.\u00a0 Lord, help me to do that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNext, I said, \u201cLord, I won\u2019t embarrass myself.\u201d\u00a0 I was born to an unwed teenage girl in the city of Philadelphia, called the concrete jungle.\u00a0 My mother had a brief affair with an older man, got pregnant with me, and didn\u2019t want to marry him.\u00a0 We had this journey throughout the years of being in and out of my grandparents\u2019 home, my auntie\u2019s home, because Mother was a single parent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, at the age of 10, I was practically raising my two brothers.\u00a0 All three of us have different fathers. We were in and out of family homes, and I was a lost puppy.\u00a0 I tried and attempted suicide.\u00a0 That didn\u2019t work.\u00a0 I was too afraid to swallow the pills that I had collected.\u00a0 I decided, \u201cI am going to run away.\u201d\u00a0 When it came time for me to run away, I was afraid of the dark; so, I didn\u2019t run away.\u00a0 God says, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m going to save this girl before she really hurts herself.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn March of 1965, I heard a message, John 3:16.\u00a0 It was delivered by a man called Thurlow Spurr and his group called The Spurrlows. That was an old group.\u00a0 I remember coming into the youth meeting.\u00a0 There were 4,000 young people.\u00a0 You could always find seats on the front row. We were late because of a snow storm.\u00a0 I sat right on the front row.\u00a0 When that man read John 3:16, it was as though he had put my name in those spaces.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen he asked for those who wanted to know how to know a loving God, how to know that a God Who had gave His only Son for me\u2014now, I love my mother\u2014but my mother never hugged me.\u00a0 My mother never told me that she loved me, but this man was telling me that the God of history had come down and died on the cross for one little, skinny, black girl in the city of Philadelphia.\u00a0 I could know for sure that love was there and offered to me.\u00a0 I accepted Christ on that snowy day of March of 1965.\u00a0 I became a new person, and that\u2019s the power of God.\u00a0 So, \u201cGod, I\u2019m not going to embarrass myself because I know too much about You.\u00a0 Instead of me listening to myself, I need to start talking to myself.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started going into the bathroom, looking in that mirror, and saying, \u201cGod, the only thing that I know is that You love me.\u00a0 I\u2019m afraid right now.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen.\u00a0 I know that if You can raise a dead Jesus, You parted the Red Sea, then You can take any problems that I have\u2014even this incredible sense of fear, and emptiness, and loneliness\u2014and make me walk up.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to embarrass You.\u201d\u00a0 The top thing is that I said, \u201cGod, I\u2019m not going to embarrass You.\u201d\u00a0 Of all the things, \u201cI am not going to embarrass God.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI made the decision, after going through all those days and weeks of getting myself out of this emotional meltdown that I was having\u2014that the spiritual health and strength of my marriage will tell the truth about the depth and the spiritual health of my relationship with God.\u00a0 It\u2019s a vertical relationship with God that tells the truth about how I treated my husband, how I treated myself, how I treated others.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCan you believe me that there is hope?\u00a0 If God can save a little, black girl from the streets of Philadelphia, from public housing\u2014a woman that was involved in ministry, who had an emotional meltdown\u2014and He still loves me\u2014what is it that He can\u2019t do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 [Studio] We have to step in here.\u00a0 That\u2019s Karen Loritts talking about the issue of fear.\u00a0 I remember sitting nearby your wife Barbara, who was at the conference when Karen was delivering this message back in 2008.\u00a0 I remember thinking, \u201cI know what Barbara has written on the inside of her wedding band.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had 1 John 4:18 engraved on the inside of her wedding band; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 It says, \u201cThere is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, why did you have that verse engraved on your wife\u2019s wedding band?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because both Barbara and I had a bunch of these fear buddies.\u00a0 I\u2019d actually call them fiends, \u201cF-I-E-N-D-S\u201d\u2014fiends.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, not friends\u2014fiends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not friends, not buddies, but fiends.\u00a0 I get what Karen is talking about here.\u00a0 All of us need to see fear for what it is and what it says about God.\u00a0 We need to turn from believing these fiends, these buddies, and turn to God\u2019s Word and hear what He says about Himself and about how we are to deal with this fear.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to believe the truth about God\u2014that He loves us.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t want the worst to happen to us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDoes He allow things to happen to get our attention?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 No doubt about it, but we have to believe the truth about Him.\u00a0 We can\u2019t allow fear to be a thief, like Karen talked about, and steal the truth about Who God is and about the Scriptures\u2014because if you can\u2019t believe that, what are you going to do with fear?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mentioned earlier I was going to be smart. I really pride myself on having my little act together\u2014you know, dot my \u201cI\u2019s\u201d and cross my \u201cT\u2019s.\u201d So, she was going to go into high school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have all these friends that have gone through menopause and the empty nest. It was something\u2014sort of like a disease that was going to creep up on me. I was now in my 50s. I was working through the menopause thing; and I was worried about, \u201cWould I survive the empty nest?\u201d\u2014which was four years off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI decided I was going to be smart. I was going to prepare myself. I knew that the way we did it when we were first married\u2014before kids was\u2014we were just lovey-dovey\u2014just talking across the table about each other and did all those romantic things.\u00a0 Then, children happened.\u00a0 You sort of have the conversation change a little bit.\u00a0 I knew when our last one would leave the nest\u2014then, I would have to find something else to talk about, and be lovey-dovey, and sit across the table, and talk to Crawford.\u00a0 I started to really nurture our relationship because he\u2019s my best friend!\u00a0 I love that man!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew that when Holly would leave for school, that it was just going to be the two of us.\u00a0 I was working on it.\u00a0 So, Holly graduates from high school.\u00a0 Those of you that have prepared your child to leave the nest\u2014maybe to go off to college, or into the work force, or into the military\u2014you know, there are some things you have to get done.\u00a0 My job\u2014that summer after graduation\u2014was to work on her dorm.\u00a0 August the 14th came.\u00a0 We packed all my baby girl\u2019s stuff into Crawford\u2019s SUV\u2014I mean, it was incredible stuff!\u00a0 We drove her down to Xavier University in New Orleans, where she was going to be a pre-med student.\u00a0 Everything was fine.\u00a0 We stayed there for a couple of days.\u00a0 Then, it was time for Crawford to put me back in the car, and for me to leave, and to leave my baby girl in New Orleans. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSeptember was fine.\u00a0 I was just cleaning up stuff and rearranging her room, now that she was gone.\u00a0 Ladies, on October the 19\u2014I\u2019ll never forget that day\u2014I had prepared, all along the way, to be ready when my baby girl left\u2014the last of our four children.\u00a0 On October the 19, I was sitting in our bedroom, at my chair next to my table, having my quiet time.\u00a0 I opened up my Bible.\u00a0 I started reading, and I started sobbing. It was as though someone had turned on a faucet.\u00a0 The next thing I knew, I had tear drops on the Bible. I couldn\u2019t figure out what was happening; and I just remember saying, \u201cLord, something is happening inside of me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt this wave of fear well up in my belly.\u00a0 All of a sudden, this floodgate of tears came, and I couldn\u2019t figure out what it was.\u00a0 Was it my time of the month?\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Crawford was gone, but that was usual since we had been married\u2014so, it wasn\u2019t that.\u00a0 It seems as though, in that house, that the walls of that house were talking to me.\u00a0 I was alone, and I was lonely. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had this thought that, \u201cI\u2019m no longer a mother anymore.\u201d\u00a0 My biggest problem, in all of my life, I\u2019m a worrier. I worry about worrying.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of my handicaps.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Anybody here like that?\u00a0 Yes\u2014there\u2019s two of us!\u00a0 I worry about worry, but the other thing that I had was fear.\u00a0 I was so\u2014it was as though this garment of fear was cloaked around me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me tell you some things about fear.\u00a0 Fear has a way of bringing its buddies.\u00a0 So, as I\u2019m going through this thing that I\u2019m going through\u2014and it lasted for several days\u2014I was really\u2014I had what I call an emotional meltdown.\u00a0 For me to say that\u2014I\u2019ve been in ministry now, back then for thirty-something years\u2014but for me to admit that I was having an emotional meltdown\u2014it was an incredible indictment on me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was having an emotional meltdown, but I was cute enough and smart enough to know that I still had to pray.\u00a0 I still kept my speaking schedule. Crawford and I were finishing a book together on parenting.\u00a0 I did all the right things; but I could not shake that fear that was gripping me.\u00a0 I identified at least ten of my fear buddies.\u00a0 Let me just share ten of them.\u00a0 I wrote them down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen fear would overtake me, fear would always bring its buddy called\u2014it distorts reality.\u00a0 Fear told me that, \u201cYou\u2019re no longer a mother.\u00a0 Who are you?\u201d\u00a0 That is ridiculous!\u00a0 But I felt as though my whole identity had just walked away on August 14, down at somebody\u2019s school, and no longer was I a mother\u2014not to say that I had three adult married children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother thing that one of the fear buddies does is it victimizes the person.\u00a0 Fear absolutely beats you up.\u00a0 I remember, just two weeks ago, when I was sitting preparing this message for today\u2014sitting at my table\u2014that all of a sudden, this fear came over me again.\u00a0 I was being victimized.\u00a0 I started weeping at the table saying, \u201cLord, what in the world am I going to say to those 6,000 women, when I\u2019m just scared to death to admit that I have fear?\u201d\u00a0 Fear victimizes a person.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother thing about fear\u2014fear puts stress on the body\u2014physically, emotionally, spiritually, blood pressure problems, stress.\u00a0 Another thing about fear\u2014it alienates the truth, even the truth that we know.\u00a0 God was still with me.\u00a0 I was still a mother, but fear told me that that was all a lie\u2014that no longer was that true.\u00a0 Another thing about fear\u2014fear immobilizes. It freezes; it cripples you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother thing about fear\u2014fear replaces faith. I forgot\u2014or didn\u2019t think about\u2014that perfect love casts out fear.\u00a0 Fear, many times, will replace the faith that we say that we have.\u00a0 Fear disappoints.\u00a0 Fear takes more than it gives.\u00a0 It gives you nothing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow about this one?\u00a0 Fear is afraid of success.\u00a0 When you are fearful, you are afraid of success.\u00a0 I knew about failure and all those things that drew me to failure, but I was afraid of moving forward.\u00a0 Two more things\u2014fear fills the heart with despair.\u00a0 You become hopeless and helpless.\u00a0 Then, the last thing I identified\u2014you probably could come up with another list\u2014fear destroys.\u00a0 Fear takes you and just wants you to walk away into a bottomless pit of hopelessness. It steals away your joy, your victory, your blessing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose were my fear buddies, but God\u2014knowing God, He wouldn\u2019t let me stay there.\u00a0 Now, see, when I was going through my emotional meltdown\u2014there were times, ladies, that I didn\u2019t even want to get out of bed.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to tell Crawford because I have the type of husband\u2014he loves me, he\u2019s my servant leader, he wants to protect me\u2014he would want to fix it.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 You know, when you\u2019re having a pity party, you want to be the only and the guest of honor.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 You want to wear your own crown, and you want to just have everything go your way.\u00a0 So, I didn\u2019t really tell him what was happening:\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cNothing\u2019s wrong, Honey.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had my own pity party, but God wouldn\u2019t let me stay there.\u00a0 I knew I was in big trouble, that I needed to get out of that bed.\u00a0 I needed to believe God and trust God with every single thing\u2014every fiber of my being\u2014because I didn\u2019t want to move.\u00a0 So, I got out of my bed.\u00a0 I went to the Bible; and of course, the way God is with His Word, He showed me several Scriptures.\u00a0 Let me share with you a couple Scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA couple things about fear that I knew\u2014I read about, but I had forgotten.\u00a0 Fear robs your memory. Several things\u2014jot it down\u2014Psalm 27, verses1-3.\u00a0 Psalm 27 says, \u201cThe Lord is my light and my salvation.\u201d\u00a0 Question: \u201cWhom shall I fear?\u201d\u00a0 Verse 3, \u201cThough a host encamp against me,\u201d\u2014my fear buddies\u2014\u201cmy heart will not fear. Though war arises against me, [in spite of this] I shall be confident.\u201d\u00a0 Philippians 4 says, \u201cBe anxious for nothing, but by everything by prayer bring your fears to God.\u201d Isaiah, Chapter 41, verse 10. I love this! God reminded me\u2014He said, \u201cDo not fear, for I am with you; do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.\u00a0 I will strengthen you, surely I will help you.\u00a0 Surely I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLastly, when the children of Israel were being led out of the wilderness\u2014when they got to the Red Sea, they were hemmed in by mountains on one side and the sea and the Egyptian army pursuing them from behind.\u00a0 Moses said to them in Exodus\u2014he said in Exodus 14, \u201cThe Lord will fight for you.\u00a0 All you have to do is be still and stand still.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what I did. I said, \u201cGod, I\u2019m going to shut my mouth.\u00a0 There is nothing that I can say. Lord, I want to make a resolve\u201d\u2014because I had a great relationship.\u00a0 I was a great wife; but, really, I was not a great woman because I was letting fear grip my heart.\u00a0 It was doing so much damage in my own life.\u00a0 I said, \u201cGod, enough is enough.\u00a0 No more will I allow fear to grip me and rob me of my joy and my blessing.\u00a0 God, I want to resolve three things.\u00a0 God, I promise You that I won\u2019t embarrass You.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing I said was, \u201cGod, I won\u2019t embarrass my husband.\u00a0 I made a vow on\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMay 22, 1971, that I would love, honor, obey in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer.\u00a0 I made a vow to love that man.\u00a0 Lord, I\u2019m going to do that, no matter hormones, PMS, empty nest.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to love that man the way you want me to love him.\u00a0 Lord, help me to do that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNext, I said, \u201cLord, I won\u2019t embarrass myself.\u201d\u00a0 I was born to an unwed teenage girl in the city of Philadelphia, called the concrete jungle.\u00a0 My mother had a brief affair with an older man, got pregnant with me, and didn\u2019t want to marry him.\u00a0 We had this journey throughout the years of being in and out of my grandparents\u2019 home, my auntie\u2019s home, because Mother was a single parent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, at the age of 10, I was practically raising my two brothers.\u00a0 All three of us have different fathers. We were in and out of family homes, and I was a lost puppy.\u00a0 I tried and attempted suicide.\u00a0 That didn\u2019t work.\u00a0 I was too afraid to swallow the pills that I had collected.\u00a0 I decided, \u201cI am going to run away.\u201d\u00a0 When it came time for me to run away, I was afraid of the dark; so, I didn\u2019t run away.\u00a0 God says, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m going to save this girl before she really hurts herself.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn March of 1965, I heard a message, John 3:16.\u00a0 It was delivered by a man called Thurlow Spurr and his group called The Spurrlows. That was an old group.\u00a0 I remember coming into the youth meeting.\u00a0 There were 4,000 young people.\u00a0 You could always find seats on the front row. We were late because of a snow storm.\u00a0 I sat right on the front row.\u00a0 When that man read John 3:16, it was as though he had put my name in those spaces.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen he asked for those who wanted to know how to know a loving God, how to know that a God Who had gave His only Son for me\u2014now, I love my mother\u2014but my mother never hugged me.\u00a0 My mother never told me that she loved me, but this man was telling me that the God of history had come down and died on the cross for one little, skinny, black girl in the city of Philadelphia.\u00a0 I could know for sure that love was there and offered to me.\u00a0 I accepted Christ on that snowy day of March of 1965.\u00a0 I became a new person, and that\u2019s the power of God.\u00a0 So, \u201cGod, I\u2019m not going to embarrass myself because I know too much about You.\u00a0 Instead of me listening to myself, I need to start talking to myself.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started going into the bathroom, looking in that mirror, and saying, \u201cGod, the only thing that I know is that You love me.\u00a0 I\u2019m afraid right now.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen.\u00a0 I know that if You can raise a dead Jesus, You parted the Red Sea, then You can take any problems that I have\u2014even this incredible sense of fear, and emptiness, and loneliness\u2014and make me walk up.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to embarrass You.\u201d\u00a0 The top thing is that I said, \u201cGod, I\u2019m not going to embarrass You.\u201d\u00a0 Of all the things, \u201cI am not going to embarrass God.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI made the decision, after going through all those days and weeks of getting myself out of this emotional meltdown that I was having\u2014that the spiritual health and strength of my marriage will tell the truth about the depth and the spiritual health of my relationship with God.\u00a0 It\u2019s a vertical relationship with God that tells the truth about how I treated my husband, how I treated myself, how I treated others.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCan you believe me that there is hope?\u00a0 If God can save a little, black girl from the streets of Philadelphia, from public housing\u2014a woman that was involved in ministry, who had an emotional meltdown\u2014and He still loves me\u2014what is it that He can\u2019t do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 [Studio] We have to step in here.\u00a0 That\u2019s Karen Loritts talking about the issue of fear.\u00a0 I remember sitting nearby your wife Barbara, who was at the conference when Karen was delivering this message back in 2008.\u00a0 I remember thinking, \u201cI know what Barbara has written on the inside of her wedding band.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had 1 John 4:18 engraved on the inside of her wedding band; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 It says, \u201cThere is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, why did you have that verse engraved on your wife\u2019s wedding band?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because both Barbara and I had a bunch of these fear buddies.\u00a0 I\u2019d actually call them fiends, \u201cF-I-E-N-D-S\u201d\u2014fiends.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, not friends\u2014fiends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not friends, not buddies, but fiends.\u00a0 I get what Karen is talking about here.\u00a0 All of us need to see fear for what it is and what it says about God.\u00a0 We need to turn from believing these fiends, these buddies, and turn to God\u2019s Word and hear what He says about Himself and about how we are to deal with this fear.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to believe the truth about God\u2014that He loves us.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t want the worst to happen to us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDoes He allow things to happen to get our attention?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 No doubt about it, but we have to believe the truth about Him.\u00a0 We can\u2019t allow fear to be a thief, like Karen talked about, and steal the truth about Who God is and about the Scriptures\u2014because if you can\u2019t believe that, what are you going to do with fear?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mentioned earlier that the <em>true woman<\/em> 2012 event is going to be happening in Indianapolis in September.\u00a0 If our listeners are interested in more information, go to our website, FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 There is a link there to the <em>true woman<\/em> site so you can find out dates, and how to register, and who\u2019s going to be speaking\u2014all of the information online at FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 Click the link that says, \u201c<em>true woman12<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I also wanted to mention, Dennis, we\u2019ve put together a curriculum for women called <em>Life Ready Woman<\/em><em><sup>\u00ae<\/sup><\/em> that features Shaunti Feldhahn.\u00a0 It\u2019s been exciting to see how women have started using this video curriculum in churches or in one-on-one Bible studies.\u00a0 In fact, I heard some great stories.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI heard about a church in the Dallas area that was using this material every week.\u00a0 There were hundreds of women coming together for <em>The Life Ready Woman<\/em> material.\u00a0 The feedback we were getting was that this material, presented by Shaunti Feldhahn, put together by us here at FamilyLife\u2014this was engaging for a lot of women who haven\u2019t really been connected with church.\u00a0 I think this church was using it to reach out to women in the community and invite them in for these <em>Life Ready Woman<\/em> sessions.\u00a0 They were finding a lot of women who were really engaged with the material.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn our website, at FamilyLifeToday.com, there\u2019s more information about <em>The Life Ready Woman<\/em> material.\u00a0 In fact, you can click the link that says, \u201c<em>Life Ready Woman<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 It will take you to an area of our website where there is more information.\u00a0 There are video samples you can look at.\u00a0 Again, go to FamilyLifeToday.com for more information about <em>The Life Ready Woman<\/em> curriculum.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI heard about another group of women\u2014this was real interesting.\u00a0 They were watching these sessions together online.\u00a0 Somebody was playing it on their computer.\u00a0 They had one of these \u201cGo to meeting\u201d kinds of things happening so that all of the women could watch in different parts of the country\u2014all around the U.S.\u2014could watch the same video.\u00a0 Then, they were interacting with it in a meeting online.\u00a0 They were doing that, once a week, as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s been interesting to see how women have been connecting with the new <em>Life Ready Woman<\/em> video curriculum from FamilyLife.\u00a0 Go to FamilyLifeToday.com for more information about <em>The Life Ready Woman<\/em> material with Shaunti Feldhahn.\u00a0 Again, our website is FamilyLifeToday.com;
