Luis Palau was getting ready to do a crusade in the Caribbean.\u00a0 He thought to himself, \u201cMaybe if I invite my son to come, maybe God would do something in Andrew\u2019s heart.\u201d\u00a0 Here\u2019s Andrew Palau.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I knew he was working me over.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cWell, I\u2019ll work him over.\u201d\u00a0 So I\u2019m like, \u201cIf you get me a marlin fishing trip, I\u2019ll be there.\u201d\u00a0 Lo and behold, of course, I knew he\u2019d figure it out.\u00a0 The next day he calls me.\u00a0 \u201cThere are these people, and they\u2019re tournament marlin fishermen.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to take you out.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cAlright, I know what you\u2019re after; and you know what I\u2019m after.\u00a0 I know that you know that I know.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went out there, and I thought, \u201cI know how to handle this thing.\u201d\u00a0 I love my folks.\u00a0 I really love to be around them.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cThis will be great;\u201d but God had other plans for me.\u00a0 As I went out there\u2014if we had time\u2014you all know, from your own experiences, the ways in which the Holy Spirit is just orchestrating your life and your circumstances for that very moment when the Gospel will come in power.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, April 6<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Andrew Palau joins us today to share with us about the day the prodigal came to his senses.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0\u00a0 You know, all of us kind of look back at our lives and say, \u201cIf I could do it again, I\u2019d do some things differently than I did it the first time.\u201d\u00a0 I think all of us have regret; but to consider the story we\u2019re looking at this week, there\u2019s a lot that Andrew Palau has come clean about in the new book that he\u2019s written.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s written a new book called <em>The Secret Life of a Fool<\/em>; and it\u2019s no longer a secret, Andrew.\u00a0 You have put it in print, and there\u2019s no doubt about it.\u00a0 You were a fool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\u00a0 I am afraid to say that I wasn\u2019t alone out there, so keep your eyes peeled.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had to wrestle in writing this book.\u00a0 For folks who don\u2019t know, you\u2019re the son of Luis Palau, international evangelist for more than 50 years.\u00a0 Today, you\u2019re on the team with your dad.\u00a0 You speak as an evangelist all around the world.\u00a0 You\u2019ve been serving there for 17 years; but there was a gap in your life, from 12 to 13 years until you were 27, when living for Christ was not on the radar screen for you.\u00a0 In fact, there came a point in your life, after you\u2019d been kind of playing the game for a while\u2014still going to church, and still trying to keep the peace\u2014but there came a point where you said, \u201cI\u2019m not going to keep this charade up.\u201d\u00a0 You quit going to church; and everybody knew, \u201cAndrew\u2019s just not walking with the Lord;\u201d right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I tried to play games\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was that in college that that happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I think in high school I went to church and to youth group.\u00a0 I had a lot of fun.\u00a0 I had a lot of partying friends there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hold it.\u00a0 I want to make sure that parents don\u2019t miss what you just kind of said under your breath.\u00a0 You said there was a lot of bad company corrupting good morals in a youth group.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, man.\u00a0 Absolutely; I was the worst, but I wasn\u2019t alone.\u00a0 I remember going off to a Christian university, my first year out of high school.\u00a0 I pretty much was thinking, \u201cWell I\u2019ll go down to Los Angeles.\u00a0 It\u2019s warm and I can surf, and I have other friends down there I can party with.\u00a0 I\u2019ll just find friends at that university just like I have done here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, it just so happened that that university, Biola University\u2014I\u2019ll mention it because its testimony is so strong.\u00a0 I really didn\u2019t find that many people down there.\u00a0 What I found\u2014is the opposite\u2014very dedicated young people.\u00a0 That impacted me a lot, and the way they handled me impacted me a lot.\u00a0 Graciously, lovingly, but firmly, they allowed me to finish my year and then escorted me out.\u00a0 But certainly, I was going to find people to do what I was into, no matter where I went.\u00a0 My parents tried everything, believe me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had an experience one night where you and a couple of other buddies got some liquor, got drunk before you went to a ballgame, thought, even in your drunken state, nobody would notice.\u00a0 There was a friend, a family friend, who had an impact in your life\u2014who came to you before the game was over.\u00a0 He made a request.\u00a0 There was a reason why he made the request.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 This is a beautiful story that continues to bear fruit.\u00a0 Al Egg, the chaplain of the Portland Trail Blazers\u2014he does some rodeo chaplaincies and some other work in Portland.\u00a0 He\u2019s just a great man of God.\u00a0 His daughter was in our high school.\u00a0 She was two years older than me.\u00a0 When I was a freshman, she was a junior.\u00a0 A young man was driving drunk and crashed the car, and Lisa Egg was killed in that accident.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was our FCA huddle leader.\u00a0 I went to FCA, to see the girls periodically and that sort of thing.\u00a0 I really wasn\u2019t that involved, but I did know her.\u00a0 It was a great tragedy.\u00a0 When I was at the game and he saw me\u2014you know, you feel so invincible as a young person\u2014like you\u2019re invisible, like you said, like you\u2019re floating around the gym\u2014and you think , \u201cIt\u2019s a massive stadium,\u201d and it\u2019s like 300 people or whatever it is.\u00a0 Al spotted me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe knew exactly what I was up to.\u00a0 He lovingly grabbed me and said, \u201cAndrew, please tell me you\u2019re not driving.\u00a0 Please do not drive.\u00a0 Be careful.\u201d\u00a0 Of course, I just foolishly lied to him and told him, \u201cOf course, I\u2019m not driving.\u00a0 I would never drive in this condition.\u201d\u00a0 But I was.\u00a0 Lo and behold, that night, I packed the car with kids.\u00a0 We were messing around, in that state; and I crashed the car.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy God\u2019s incredible grace time after time\u2014I don\u2019t know why He was so merciful to me\u2014but He protected us that night.\u00a0 I totaled the car, sent the kids running off, and I really didn\u2019t even go home that night because I wasn\u2019t, even at that point, willing to give up partying.\u00a0 \u201cWell, I can deal with this in the morning.\u00a0 I got a party to go to.\u201d\u00a0 I ended up at the party, and the police came, and they called my mom.\u00a0 What was I thinking?\u00a0 Can you imagine the foolishness?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you\u2019d actually committed a felony.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it was a felony hit-and-run driving.\u00a0 These are the kinds of things that I was involved with, and my parents were living through and working through.\u00a0 Dad\u2019s friends, like Al, were praying for me, intervening, doing their best.\u00a0 I just thank God for their testimony and God\u2019s grace in my life through it all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you think you were a Christian?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 During this period of time, if someone had said, \u201cAndrew, when you die, are you going to go to heaven; or are you going to hell?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 I would not have said that I was a Christian.\u00a0 I would have said, \u201cI\u2019ll deal with that later.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, that\u2019s the fool.\u00a0 There are different types of foolishness, you see, in the Bible.\u00a0 The one that I think is the most crucially difficult is the one who says, \u201cThe fool says, \u2018There is no God.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 I never really did say, \u201cThere is no God;\u201d\u2014but isn\u2019t it\u2014how much more foolish is it to actually potentially believe that maybe there is a God and still carry on in your foolishness?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is really what I\u2019ve had to recognize is exactly what I did because, sometimes, I know, I actually believed, \u201cThat\u2019s probably true.\u201d\u00a0 But I loved my sin too much.\u00a0 That\u2019s what a lot of people do.\u00a0 I know it is insanity, as a believer\u2014that rationale is insane; but I was not in my right mind, clearly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So here you are, wrecking cars, facing felony charges.\u00a0 You loved this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I guess so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, wasn\u2019t there a point where you went, \u201cMy life\u2019s not going well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I guess there were enough people in my life who, when I said, \u201cThis is what I did, and this is what happened,\u201d they thought it was radical, and funny, and insane, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were getting positive strokes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 \u2014I was getting rewards for that, which is that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You burned up a Volkswagen<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> bug; right?\u00a0 You burned it, just for kicks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well we thought\u2014yes, just for fun.\u00a0 We thought it might explode.\u00a0 You know, we were looking for the strokes of the frat buddies saying, \u201cYou guys are definitely the most ridiculous people we\u2019ve ever met.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know why that meant so much to me, but it certainly did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had one year at the Christian college.\u00a0 What happened after that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I went to the University of Oregon and spent another four-and-a-half years there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that was all about the perpetual party for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, just partying, nonstop.\u00a0 You know, relationships\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then you graduate from college.\u00a0 What\u2019s next?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Went off to Boston, on the other side of the country, and started working my way up the corporate ladder.\u00a0 Slowed down my partying a little bit, not for spiritual reasons, but just because I had to get up to go to work in the morning.\u00a0 Plus, I\u2019d had some pretty rough encounters with the Enemy that kind of made me slow down a little bit; but nothing had changed in my heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You ended up in Europe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, spent some time in Europe and hitchhiked around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, some of those stories\u2014I mean, you\u2019re sleeping underneath a sailboat\u2014not that far from a homeless bunch of hobos\u2014you call them, in the book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who were thinking about getting you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were sleeping rough, as the Brits call it\u2014sleeping on the streets, hitchhiking around.\u00a0 We were in Marseilles, France.\u00a0 One of the hobos kindly, out of the generosity of his heart, came and said, \u201cYou know, we\u2019ve been watching you guys.\u00a0 If you\u2019re under that sailboat, sleeping tonight, some of the guys are going to come, and just beat you up, and rip off your stuff.\u00a0 You\u2019d better beat it.\u201d\u00a0 So we did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod intervened like that so many times.\u00a0 I know, in many cases, things happen; and you say, \u201cWow, I wish God would have intervened in that case.\u201d You don\u2019t understand why.\u00a0 Why He did on my behalf, endlessly, I cannot tell you; but I am eternally grateful that He rescued me over and over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you\u2019d show up back in Portland\u2014see your Mom and Dad\u2014you\u2019re back home for Christmas or something.\u00a0 Did they just open the door and say, \u201cWe\u2019re so glad to see you\u201d?\u00a0 I would think, \u201cIf my son\u2019s coming home,\u201d\u2014and it\u2019s been the kind of life he\u2019s been living\u2014there would be an awkwardness.\u00a0 There\u2019d be a chill in the air.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t know what to talk to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think there was some of that, and I would play it off pretty well.\u00a0 I was fairly respectful like\u2014I mean, I wouldn\u2019t come home to a family gathering drunk.\u00a0 I could refrain from doing certain things for a number of days.\u00a0 I really loved my family.\u00a0 They meant the world to me.\u00a0 I was impressed by them.\u00a0 I wanted them to think highly of me.\u00a0 I would kind of shape it up for those little seasons and make it difficult for them to pin me down in the moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And just continuing to run.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just carry on; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But here\u2019s your dad, Luis Palau, who\u2019s a global evangelist, who\u2019s preaching the Gospel everywhere.\u00a0 He ends up getting an invitation to go to Jamaica in 1993.\u00a0 He invites you to come.\u00a0 Now, isn\u2019t that interesting that your dad would invite you to join him at one of his evangelistic crusades?\u00a0 What do you think he was trying to do there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Well, I am like a poster child for what mass evangelism really is because, as I tell people endlessly, when we come together, in a unified way, for a particular tool for the Gospel\u2014it\u2019s not the best model or the only model\u2014it\u2019s just one of the many tools that we have available to us to share the Good News with our friends and family, as we\u2019re clearly called to do as followers of Jesus Christ\u2014to remember and the tell of His mighty works.\u00a0 It\u2019s our responsibility.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow we choose to do that\u2014there\u2019s just an endless number of ways.\u00a0 Of course, Dad just did what we tell everybody else to do\u2014live the life as a testimony, pray faithfully because there\u2019s great power in prayer, and they also shared with me the Good News because they knew the Good News of Jesus Christ was the power of God unto salvation\u2014unto radical transformation\u2014and nothing less would do for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey did that.\u00a0 They prayed for me, they thought they had a little hook for me because I\u2019m living in Boston.\u00a0 It is February.\u00a0 It is freezing cold, two feet of snow.\u00a0 They\u2019re like, \u201cMaybe he\u2019ll come to this crusade because it\u2019s in Jamaica.\u201d\u00a0 They invited me; and I\u2019m thinking about the sun, and the beach, and Red Stripe<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> beer.\u00a0 \u201cI know how to handle this Christian thing.\u201d\u00a0 Actually, I love to fish.\u00a0 I said to my dad,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes, yes.\u00a0 You asked him to line up a fishing trip for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I knew he was working me over.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cWell, I\u2019ll work him over.\u201d\u00a0 So I\u2019m like, \u201cIf you get me a marlin fishing trip, I\u2019ll be there.\u201d\u00a0 Lo and behold, of course, I knew he\u2019d figure it out.\u00a0 The next day he calls me.\u00a0 \u201cThere are these people, and they\u2019re tournament marlin fishermen.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to take you out.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cAlright, I know what you\u2019re after; and you know what I\u2019m after.\u00a0 I know that you know that I know.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went out there, and I thought, \u201cI know how to handle this thing.\u201d\u00a0 I love my folks.\u00a0 I really love to be around them.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cThis will be great;\u201d but God had other plans for me.\u00a0 As I went out there\u2014if we had time\u2014you all know, from your own experiences, the ways in which the Holy Spirit is just orchestrating your life and your circumstances for that very moment when the Gospel will come in power.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where did you sit at the crusade?\u00a0 Were you backstage or were you out with the masses?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I was sitting out with the masses with this family\u2014this brother of\u2014now, I\u2019ll let the cat out of the bag\u2014the brother of my, now, wife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who you met there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who I met, who is the guy that took me fishing.\u00a0 I was sitting with this group of young people that I had met.\u00a0 We were sitting in the crowd, with her family.\u00a0 My mom was there, and my little brother was there.\u00a0 We were out in the crowd, just listening\u2014night after night, too, by the way\u2014probably five nights of the crusade.\u00a0 I would hear the message.\u00a0 I would feel that burden\u2014you know\u2014the Hound of Heaven just pressing down on me and just trying to capture my attention.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m seeing the testimony of these young people who God had recently radically done this incredible transformative work.\u00a0 They\u2019re talking about it.\u00a0 I\u2019m out on this fishing trip, and I could tell these guys were just like me.\u00a0 They\u2019d been into all of the garbage, yet their conversation was about this very recent radical, 180-degree turnaround\u2014healing from addictions, restoration of relationships.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m just like, \u201cMan!\u00a0 That is what I want.\u201d\u00a0 You know?\u00a0 \u201cThat is what I have to get a hold of in my life because I have this great mask for the world to see, \u2018Everything is fine with Andrew,\u2019\u201d but, in my heart, it was not fine.\u00a0 I played it off fairly well; but boy, was there a battle going on for my soul.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was fearful of eternity.\u00a0 The Bible says, \u201cI have written eternity on the hearts of all men.\u201d\u00a0 No matter what people tell you\u2014I would have told you, at that time, some philosophical, pseudo-intellectual, ridiculous thing I learned at the University of Oregon about those things being beyond the mind of man, and this sort of thing; but I knew, when I laid in my bed at night, sober, if you ever found me in that condition, I knew exactly what my situation was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt wasn\u2019t good.\u00a0 The shame of all my activities, the people I had hurt\u2014the faces of those people would haunt me.\u00a0 It was really getting into me, but nobody knew it.\u00a0 But when I heard that Good News, I saw the testimony\u2014I had the testimony long-term of my parents\u2014and I just said, \u201cYes, this is what I really want.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is your dad, up on the platform, preaching in Jamaica.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you were listening.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was listening; but you know, it was like, \u201cMe and God.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019ve probably had that experience, many of you at camp or somewhere.\u00a0 You\u2019re just like, \u201cThis guy\u2019s talking to me.\u201d\u00a0 I thought to myself for a moment, \u201cDad is picking on me.\u00a0 Why is he doing this?\u00a0 This is\u2014I\u2019m going to get him.\u201d\u00a0 I realized, immediately, at the end of that thought, \u201cIt\u2019s not Dad.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was preaching\u2014I remember, on the rich young ruler.\u00a0 I\u2019m not rich.\u00a0 I don\u2019t rule anything, but it was me.\u00a0 God was reaching out to me.\u00a0 It was on that last night ,at the Kingston National Stadium, when Dad was preaching on the rich young ruler, that I made a determination that was the real beginning of change.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you\u2019re sitting next to the guy who had taken you out marlin fishing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did he say something to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 They\u2019re praying for me.\u00a0 They knew what my situation was.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t idiots.\u00a0 I think Mom and Dad had tipped them off, and they handled it very well because they had just been through it.\u00a0 They knew what was going on; and that if anything good was going to happen, it was going to be God\u2019s work and that the Holy Spirit would intervene in my life, as He had in theirs.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut they wanted to be a part of it, so they were cautious but clear.\u00a0 One day, one of the guys just said, \u201cWhat\u2019s really going on?\u00a0 Where are you coming from and what\u2019s happening?\u00a0 You\u2019ve made this proclamation of faith.\u201d\u00a0 They really got into it with me, and I\u2019m very grateful.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy parents had gone for it all the way along.\u00a0 Dad was faithful.\u00a0\u00a0 When I was little, he would take me for walks and say, \u201cSon, you know how to have a good time.\u00a0 You\u2019re doing well in school, you\u2019ve got lots of friends; but God offers you life and life in abundance.\u00a0 As a father who loves you, I have to caution you.\u00a0 The direction that you\u2019re going is not going to lead you to the life that you think it is.\u00a0 Sin has fun in its season.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019d give me the whole thing, you know, and tell me about the cross of Jesus Christ and His death, burial, and resurrection on my behalf.\u00a0 He would go for it, and I would just weasel my way out of it and reject it.\u00a0 He would write letters.\u00a0 I put one of the letters in the book, which, I think for me, is the highlight of the whole book\u2014is to see the heart of this father for his son; you know?\u00a0 It\u2019s powerful, and it impacted me, and I rejected it.\u00a0 He wrote 60 books, half of them I\u2019m sure just to have something new to put in my hand\u2014you know what I mean?\u00a0 Then, that final effort there\u2014to invite me to the crusade\u2014they just never gave up, and other people were involved, and, of course, the Holy Spirit, orchestrating it all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then that night, the last night of the crusade, where you reached a turning point, what did you do?\u00a0 Did you go forward at the end of the crusade?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I did not.\u00a0 I was like, \u201cOh, that\u2019s just ridiculous.\u201d\u00a0 I made that decision and determined it in my heart.\u00a0 I told this girl that was with me there that night.\u00a0 Later, I said, you know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wendy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 My wife Wendy.\u00a0 She said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t your wife then.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t my wife.\u00a0 She was just a girl I had met.\u00a0 I knew her for probably six days, at that point; but I was interested in her and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014thought she was cute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 She was definitely cute.\u00a0 She was beautiful, and it captured my attention in a unique way.\u00a0 It was part of God drawing me.\u00a0 I really wanted all the good things of God at that point, but I really had a further step to take.\u00a0 I determined to go to church, to read my Bible, to stop the drugs and break off these relationships.\u00a0 I was very serious about making a step; but you know, there was something that, even though Dad called for it and people were having that experience there at the stadium, it\u2019s something that really happened about a month later.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI made a determination that I wanted all the good things of God there at the stadium, but I went home and I kind of floundered for a little while.\u00a0 I went back out to Jamaica and went to a Bible study with these young people.\u00a0 It was really there that I realized that there was an issue related to repentance that I had not gotten to yet.\u00a0 It was really a breakthrough moment where I realized, \u201cI want all these good things, but I haven\u2019t really crucified the sin in my life.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t really confessed it to Christ and asked Him to forgive me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI kind of just wanted a closure and a moving forward, without dealing with it.\u00a0 That\u2019s another situation that occurred to me, where I came before the Lord and I said, \u201cI want to follow You.\u00a0 I\u2019ve made some steps, but I\u2019ve failed miserably.\u00a0 What is it that\u2019s keeping me from You?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s as if He said, \u201cYou really want to know what\u2019s keeping Me from you, Andrew.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cYes, what is it?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe just did this miraculous thing.\u00a0 He opened up my eyes, in this moment, to see what was keeping me from the relationship that I was made for.\u00a0 It was just all the sin of my life\u2014all of my lying, and cheating, and stealing, and the abusive relationships, and the arrogance, and the pride, and all of the garbage that I heaped into my life.\u00a0 I just wanted it to go away, but I had never turned to the Lord, broken, and said, \u201cI am sorry.\u00a0 I am wrong.\u00a0 Please forgive me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen He opened my eyes to see it, I was just shattered.\u00a0 I fell on my face, and I was like weeping and bawling.\u00a0 Some issue would come into my mind, or the face of someone I\u2019d hurt, and I\u2019d be like, \u201cOh God, please forgive me.\u00a0 How could I have been so foolish?\u00a0 How could I have done that?\u00a0 Please forgive me.\u201d\u00a0 He just took it, and took it, and took it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, in this one moment, it is as if I just stood up, off my face.\u00a0 I just knew it was finished, and His work in me was complete, and I was forgiven, and restored.\u00a0 I felt the shame of my life\u2014just lifted, absolutely, and filled with a joy.\u00a0 The Bible talks about the joy of the Lord that will be your strength and a peace that passes understanding.\u00a0 It happened for me in a moment.\u00a0 That was really that radical, transformative moment, a 180-degree turnaround; and life has not been the same since then.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that can happen in a listener\u2019s heart, right now, because the same Jesus Christ, Who rose from the dead and defeated death\u2014because He\u2019s alive today.\u00a0 He changed your heart 18 years ago; and He can change that person\u2019s heart, wherever they are, right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 And He\u2019s calling you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, exactly.\u00a0 You have to answer the call.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let another day, where the sun goes down, occur without settling up with your God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 The Bible says our life is like a vapor, it comes and it goes.\u00a0 You have no idea when that will be.\u00a0 If God has been calling you, just refuse Him no longer.\u00a0 I just beg you.\u00a0 If I could do anything to compel you to confess Christ, and ask Him to forgive you, and follow Him, I would do it; but really, it\u2019s your decision.\u00a0 He\u2019s calling you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really is.\u00a0 Andrew, I want to thank you for being on the broadcast; but I have one last assignment, or one last thing I they\u2019re tournament marlin fishermen.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to take you out.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cAlright, I know what you\u2019re after; and you know what I\u2019m after.\u00a0 I know that you know that I know.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went out there, and I thought, \u201cI know how to handle this thing.\u201d\u00a0 I love my folks.\u00a0 I really love to be around them.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cThis will be great;\u201d but God had other plans for me.\u00a0 As I went out there\u2014if we had time\u2014you all know, from your own experiences, the ways in which the Holy Spirit is just orchestrating your life and your circumstances for that very moment when the Gospel will come in power.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, April 6<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Andrew Palau joins us today to share with us about the day the prodigal came to his senses.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0\u00a0 You know, all of us kind of look back at our lives and say, \u201cIf I could do it again, I\u2019d do some things differently than I did it the first time.\u201d\u00a0 I think all of us have regret; but to consider the story we\u2019re looking at this week, there\u2019s a lot that Andrew Palau has come clean about in the new book that he\u2019s written.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s written a new book called <em>The Secret Life of a Fool<\/em>; and it\u2019s no longer a secret, Andrew.\u00a0 You have put it in print, and there\u2019s no doubt about it.\u00a0 You were a fool.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\u00a0 I am afraid to say that I wasn\u2019t alone out there, so keep your eyes peeled.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had to wrestle in writing this book.\u00a0 For folks who don\u2019t know, you\u2019re the son of Luis Palau, international evangelist for more than 50 years.\u00a0 Today, you\u2019re on the team with your dad.\u00a0 You speak as an evangelist all around the world.\u00a0 You\u2019ve been serving there for 17 years; but there was a gap in your life, from 12 to 13 years until you were 27, when living for Christ was not on the radar screen for you.\u00a0 In fact, there came a point in your life, after you\u2019d been kind of playing the game for a while\u2014still going to church, and still trying to keep the peace\u2014but there came a point where you said, \u201cI\u2019m not going to keep this charade up.\u201d\u00a0 You quit going to church; and everybody knew, \u201cAndrew\u2019s just not walking with the Lord;\u201d right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I tried to play games\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was that in college that that happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I think in high school I went to church and to youth group.\u00a0 I had a lot of fun.\u00a0 I had a lot of partying friends there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hold it.\u00a0 I want to make sure that parents don\u2019t miss what you just kind of said under your breath.\u00a0 You said there was a lot of bad company corrupting good morals in a youth group.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, man.\u00a0 Absolutely; I was the worst, but I wasn\u2019t alone.\u00a0 I remember going off to a Christian university, my first year out of high school.\u00a0 I pretty much was thinking, \u201cWell I\u2019ll go down to Los Angeles.\u00a0 It\u2019s warm and I can surf, and I have other friends down there I can party with.\u00a0 I\u2019ll just find friends at that university just like I have done here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, it just so happened that that university, Biola University\u2014I\u2019ll mention it because its testimony is so strong.\u00a0 I really didn\u2019t find that many people down there.\u00a0 What I found\u2014is the opposite\u2014very dedicated young people.\u00a0 That impacted me a lot, and the way they handled me impacted me a lot.\u00a0 Graciously, lovingly, but firmly, they allowed me to finish my year and then escorted me out.\u00a0 But certainly, I was going to find people to do what I was into, no matter where I went.\u00a0 My parents tried everything, believe me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had an experience one night where you and a couple of other buddies got some liquor, got drunk before you went to a ballgame, thought, even in your drunken state, nobody would notice.\u00a0 There was a friend, a family friend, who had an impact in your life\u2014who came to you before the game was over.\u00a0 He made a request.\u00a0 There was a reason why he made the request.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 This is a beautiful story that continues to bear fruit.\u00a0 Al Egg, the chaplain of the Portland Trail Blazers\u2014he does some rodeo chaplaincies and some other work in Portland.\u00a0 He\u2019s just a great man of God.\u00a0 His daughter was in our high school.\u00a0 She was two years older than me.\u00a0 When I was a freshman, she was a junior.\u00a0 A young man was driving drunk and crashed the car, and Lisa Egg was killed in that accident.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was our FCA huddle leader.\u00a0 I went to FCA, to see the girls periodically and that sort of thing.\u00a0 I really wasn\u2019t that involved, but I did know her.\u00a0 It was a great tragedy.\u00a0 When I was at the game and he saw me\u2014you know, you feel so invincible as a young person\u2014like you\u2019re invisible, like you said, like you\u2019re floating around the gym\u2014and you think , \u201cIt\u2019s a massive stadium,\u201d and it\u2019s like 300 people or whatever it is.\u00a0 Al spotted me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe knew exactly what I was up to.\u00a0 He lovingly grabbed me and said, \u201cAndrew, please tell me you\u2019re not driving.\u00a0 Please do not drive.\u00a0 Be careful.\u201d\u00a0 Of course, I just foolishly lied to him and told him, \u201cOf course, I\u2019m not driving.\u00a0 I would never drive in this condition.\u201d\u00a0 But I was.\u00a0 Lo and behold, that night, I packed the car with kids.\u00a0 We were messing around, in that state; and I crashed the car.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy God\u2019s incredible grace time after time\u2014I don\u2019t know why He was so merciful to me\u2014but He protected us that night.\u00a0 I totaled the car, sent the kids running off, and I really didn\u2019t even go home that night because I wasn\u2019t, even at that point, willing to give up partying.\u00a0 \u201cWell, I can deal with this in the morning.\u00a0 I got a party to go to.\u201d\u00a0 I ended up at the party, and the police came, and they called my mom.\u00a0 What was I thinking?\u00a0 Can you imagine the foolishness?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you\u2019d actually committed a felony.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it was a felony hit-and-run driving.\u00a0 These are the kinds of things that I was involved with, and my parents were living through and working through.\u00a0 Dad\u2019s friends, like Al, were praying for me, intervening, doing their best.\u00a0 I just thank God for their testimony and God\u2019s grace in my life through it all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you think you were a Christian?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 During this period of time, if someone had said, \u201cAndrew, when you die, are you going to go to heaven; or are you going to hell?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 I would not have said that I was a Christian.\u00a0 I would have said, \u201cI\u2019ll deal with that later.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, that\u2019s the fool.\u00a0 There are different types of foolishness, you see, in the Bible.\u00a0 The one that I think is the most crucially difficult is the one who says, \u201cThe fool says, \u2018There is no God.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 I never really did say, \u201cThere is no God;\u201d\u2014but isn\u2019t it\u2014how much more foolish is it to actually potentially believe that maybe there is a God and still carry on in your foolishness?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is really what I\u2019ve had to recognize is exactly what I did because, sometimes, I know, I actually believed, \u201cThat\u2019s probably true.\u201d\u00a0 But I loved my sin too much.\u00a0 That\u2019s what a lot of people do.\u00a0 I know it is insanity, as a believer\u2014that rationale is insane; but I was not in my right mind, clearly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So here you are, wrecking cars, facing felony charges.\u00a0 You loved this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I guess so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, wasn\u2019t there a point where you went, \u201cMy life\u2019s not going well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I guess there were enough people in my life who, when I said, \u201cThis is what I did, and this is what happened,\u201d they thought it was radical, and funny, and insane, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were getting positive strokes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 \u2014I was getting rewards for that, which is that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You burned up a Volkswagen<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> bug; right?\u00a0 You burned it, just for kicks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well we thought\u2014yes, just for fun.\u00a0 We thought it might explode.\u00a0 You know, we were looking for the strokes of the frat buddies saying, \u201cYou guys are definitely the most ridiculous people we\u2019ve ever met.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know why that meant so much to me, but it certainly did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had one year at the Christian college.\u00a0 What happened after that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I went to the University of Oregon and spent another four-and-a-half years there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that was all about the perpetual party for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, just partying, nonstop.\u00a0 You know, relationships\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then you graduate from college.\u00a0 What\u2019s next?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Went off to Boston, on the other side of the country, and started working my way up the corporate ladder.\u00a0 Slowed down my partying a little bit, not for spiritual reasons, but just because I had to get up to go to work in the morning.\u00a0 Plus, I\u2019d had some pretty rough encounters with the Enemy that kind of made me slow down a little bit; but nothing had changed in my heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You ended up in Europe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, spent some time in Europe and hitchhiked around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, some of those stories\u2014I mean, you\u2019re sleeping underneath a sailboat\u2014not that far from a homeless bunch of hobos\u2014you call them, in the book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who were thinking about getting you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were sleeping rough, as the Brits call it\u2014sleeping on the streets, hitchhiking around.\u00a0 We were in Marseilles, France.\u00a0 One of the hobos kindly, out of the generosity of his heart, came and said, \u201cYou know, we\u2019ve been watching you guys.\u00a0 If you\u2019re under that sailboat, sleeping tonight, some of the guys are going to come, and just beat you up, and rip off your stuff.\u00a0 You\u2019d better beat it.\u201d\u00a0 So we did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod intervened like that so many times.\u00a0 I know, in many cases, things happen; and you say, \u201cWow, I wish God would have intervened in that case.\u201d You don\u2019t understand why.\u00a0 Why He did on my behalf, endlessly, I cannot tell you; but I am eternally grateful that He rescued me over and over.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you\u2019d show up back in Portland\u2014see your Mom and Dad\u2014you\u2019re back home for Christmas or something.\u00a0 Did they just open the door and say, \u201cWe\u2019re so glad to see you\u201d?\u00a0 I would think, \u201cIf my son\u2019s coming home,\u201d\u2014and it\u2019s been the kind of life he\u2019s been living\u2014there would be an awkwardness.\u00a0 There\u2019d be a chill in the air.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t know what to talk to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think there was some of that, and I would play it off pretty well.\u00a0 I was fairly respectful like\u2014I mean, I wouldn\u2019t come home to a family gathering drunk.\u00a0 I could refrain from doing certain things for a number of days.\u00a0 I really loved my family.\u00a0 They meant the world to me.\u00a0 I was impressed by them.\u00a0 I wanted them to think highly of me.\u00a0 I would kind of shape it up for those little seasons and make it difficult for them to pin me down in the moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And just continuing to run.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just carry on; yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But here\u2019s your dad, Luis Palau, who\u2019s a global evangelist, who\u2019s preaching the Gospel everywhere.\u00a0 He ends up getting an invitation to go to Jamaica in 1993.\u00a0 He invites you to come.\u00a0 Now, isn\u2019t that interesting that your dad would invite you to join him at one of his evangelistic crusades?\u00a0 What do you think he was trying to do there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Well, I am like a poster child for what mass evangelism really is because, as I tell people endlessly, when we come together, in a unified way, for a particular tool for the Gospel\u2014it\u2019s not the best model or the only model\u2014it\u2019s just one of the many tools that we have available to us to share the Good News with our friends and family, as we\u2019re clearly called to do as followers of Jesus Christ\u2014to remember and the tell of His mighty works.\u00a0 It\u2019s our responsibility.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow we choose to do that\u2014there\u2019s just an endless number of ways.\u00a0 Of course, Dad just did what we tell everybody else to do\u2014live the life as a testimony, pray faithfully because there\u2019s great power in prayer, and they also shared with me the Good News because they knew the Good News of Jesus Christ was the power of God unto salvation\u2014unto radical transformation\u2014and nothing less would do for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey did that.\u00a0 They prayed for me, they thought they had a little hook for me because I\u2019m living in Boston.\u00a0 It is February.\u00a0 It is freezing cold, two feet of snow.\u00a0 They\u2019re like, \u201cMaybe he\u2019ll come to this crusade because it\u2019s in Jamaica.\u201d\u00a0 They invited me; and I\u2019m thinking about the sun, and the beach, and Red Stripe<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> beer.\u00a0 \u201cI know how to handle this Christian thing.\u201d\u00a0 Actually, I love to fish.\u00a0 I said to my dad,\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes, yes.\u00a0 You asked him to line up a fishing trip for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I knew he was working me over.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cWell, I\u2019ll work him over.\u201d\u00a0 So I\u2019m like, \u201cIf you get me a marlin fishing trip, I\u2019ll be there.\u201d\u00a0 Lo and behold, of course, I knew he\u2019d figure it out.\u00a0 The next day he calls me.\u00a0 \u201cThere are these people, and they\u2019re tournament marlin fishermen.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to take you out.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cAlright, I know what you\u2019re after; and you know what I\u2019m after.\u00a0 I know that you know that I know.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went out there, and I thought, \u201cI know how to handle this thing.\u201d\u00a0 I love my folks.\u00a0 I really love to be around them.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cThis will be great;\u201d but God had other plans for me.\u00a0 As I went out there\u2014if we had time\u2014you all know, from your own experiences, the ways in which the Holy Spirit is just orchestrating your life and your circumstances for that very moment when the Gospel will come in power.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where did you sit at the crusade?\u00a0 Were you backstage or were you out with the masses?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I was sitting out with the masses with this family\u2014this brother of\u2014now, I\u2019ll let the cat out of the bag\u2014the brother of my, now, wife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who you met there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who I met, who is the guy that took me fishing.\u00a0 I was sitting with this group of young people that I had met.\u00a0 We were sitting in the crowd, with her family.\u00a0 My mom was there, and my little brother was there.\u00a0 We were out in the crowd, just listening\u2014night after night, too, by the way\u2014probably five nights of the crusade.\u00a0 I would hear the message.\u00a0 I would feel that burden\u2014you know\u2014the Hound of Heaven just pressing down on me and just trying to capture my attention.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m seeing the testimony of these young people who God had recently radically done this incredible transformative work.\u00a0 They\u2019re talking about it.\u00a0 I\u2019m out on this fishing trip, and I could tell these guys were just like me.\u00a0 They\u2019d been into all of the garbage, yet their conversation was about this very recent radical, 180-degree turnaround\u2014healing from addictions, restoration of relationships.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m just like, \u201cMan!\u00a0 That is what I want.\u201d\u00a0 You know?\u00a0 \u201cThat is what I have to get a hold of in my life because I have this great mask for the world to see, \u2018Everything is fine with Andrew,\u2019\u201d but, in my heart, it was not fine.\u00a0 I played it off fairly well; but boy, was there a battle going on for my soul.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was fearful of eternity.\u00a0 The Bible says, \u201cI have written eternity on the hearts of all men.\u201d\u00a0 No matter what people tell you\u2014I would have told you, at that time, some philosophical, pseudo-intellectual, ridiculous thing I learned at the University of Oregon about those things being beyond the mind of man, and this sort of thing; but I knew, when I laid in my bed at night, sober, if you ever found me in that condition, I knew exactly what my situation was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt wasn\u2019t good.\u00a0 The shame of all my activities, the people I had hurt\u2014the faces of those people would haunt me.\u00a0 It was really getting into me, but nobody knew it.\u00a0 But when I heard that Good News, I saw the testimony\u2014I had the testimony long-term of my parents\u2014and I just said, \u201cYes, this is what I really want.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is your dad, up on the platform, preaching in Jamaica.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you were listening.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was listening; but you know, it was like, \u201cMe and God.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019ve probably had that experience, many of you at camp or somewhere.\u00a0 You\u2019re just like, \u201cThis guy\u2019s talking to me.\u201d\u00a0 I thought to myself for a moment, \u201cDad is picking on me.\u00a0 Why is he doing this?\u00a0 This is\u2014I\u2019m going to get him.\u201d\u00a0 I realized, immediately, at the end of that thought, \u201cIt\u2019s not Dad.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was preaching\u2014I remember, on the rich young ruler.\u00a0 I\u2019m not rich.\u00a0 I don\u2019t rule anything, but it was me.\u00a0 God was reaching out to me.\u00a0 It was on that last night ,at the Kingston National Stadium, when Dad was preaching on the rich young ruler, that I made a determination that was the real beginning of change.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you\u2019re sitting next to the guy who had taken you out marlin fishing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did he say something to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 They\u2019re praying for me.\u00a0 They knew what my situation was.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t idiots.\u00a0 I think Mom and Dad had tipped them off, and they handled it very well because they had just been through it.\u00a0 They knew what was going on; and that if anything good was going to happen, it was going to be God\u2019s work and that the Holy Spirit would intervene in my life, as He had in theirs.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut they wanted to be a part of it, so they were cautious but clear.\u00a0 One day, one of the guys just said, \u201cWhat\u2019s really going on?\u00a0 Where are you coming from and what\u2019s happening?\u00a0 You\u2019ve made this proclamation of faith.\u201d\u00a0 They really got into it with me, and I\u2019m very grateful.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy parents had gone for it all the way along.\u00a0 Dad was faithful.\u00a0\u00a0 When I was little, he would take me for walks and say, \u201cSon, you know how to have a good time.\u00a0 You\u2019re doing well in school, you\u2019ve got lots of friends; but God offers you life and life in abundance.\u00a0 As a father who loves you, I have to caution you.\u00a0 The direction that you\u2019re going is not going to lead you to the life that you think it is.\u00a0 Sin has fun in its season.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019d give me the whole thing, you know, and tell me about the cross of Jesus Christ and His death, burial, and resurrection on my behalf.\u00a0 He would go for it, and I would just weasel my way out of it and reject it.\u00a0 He would write letters.\u00a0 I put one of the letters in the book, which, I think for me, is the highlight of the whole book\u2014is to see the heart of this father for his son; you know?\u00a0 It\u2019s powerful, and it impacted me, and I rejected it.\u00a0 He wrote 60 books, half of them I\u2019m sure just to have something new to put in my hand\u2014you know what I mean?\u00a0 Then, that final effort there\u2014to invite me to the crusade\u2014they just never gave up, and other people were involved, and, of course, the Holy Spirit, orchestrating it all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then that night, the last night of the crusade, where you reached a turning point, what did you do?\u00a0 Did you go forward at the end of the crusade?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I did not.\u00a0 I was like, \u201cOh, that\u2019s just ridiculous.\u201d\u00a0 I made that decision and determined it in my heart.\u00a0 I told this girl that was with me there that night.\u00a0 Later, I said, you know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wendy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 My wife Wendy.\u00a0 She said\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t your wife then.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t my wife.\u00a0 She was just a girl I had met.\u00a0 I knew her for probably six days, at that point; but I was interested in her and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014thought she was cute.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 She was definitely cute.\u00a0 She was beautiful, and it captured my attention in a unique way.\u00a0 It was part of God drawing me.\u00a0 I really wanted all the good things of God at that point, but I really had a further step to take.\u00a0 I determined to go to church, to read my Bible, to stop the drugs and break off these relationships.\u00a0 I was very serious about making a step; but you know, there was something that, even though Dad called for it and people were having that experience there at the stadium, it\u2019s something that really happened about a month later.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI made a determination that I wanted all the good things of God there at the stadium, but I went home and I kind of floundered for a little while.\u00a0 I went back out to Jamaica and went to a Bible study with these young people.\u00a0 It was really there that I realized that there was an issue related to repentance that I had not gotten to yet.\u00a0 It was really a breakthrough moment where I realized, \u201cI want all these good things, but I haven\u2019t really crucified the sin in my life.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t really confessed it to Christ and asked Him to forgive me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI kind of just wanted a closure and a moving forward, without dealing with it.\u00a0 That\u2019s another situation that occurred to me, where I came before the Lord and I said, \u201cI want to follow You.\u00a0 I\u2019ve made some steps, but I\u2019ve failed miserably.\u00a0 What is it that\u2019s keeping me from You?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s as if He said, \u201cYou really want to know what\u2019s keeping Me from you, Andrew.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cYes, what is it?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe just did this miraculous thing.\u00a0 He opened up my eyes, in this moment, to see what was keeping me from the relationship that I was made for.\u00a0 It was just all the sin of my life\u2014all of my lying, and cheating, and stealing, and the abusive relationships, and the arrogance, and the pride, and all of the garbage that I heaped into my life.\u00a0 I just wanted it to go away, but I had never turned to the Lord, broken, and said, \u201cI am sorry.\u00a0 I am wrong.\u00a0 Please forgive me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen He opened my eyes to see it, I was just shattered.\u00a0 I fell on my face, and I was like weeping and bawling.\u00a0 Some issue would come into my mind, or the face of someone I\u2019d hurt, and I\u2019d be like, \u201cOh God, please forgive me.\u00a0 How could I have been so foolish?\u00a0 How could I have done that?\u00a0 Please forgive me.\u201d\u00a0 He just took it, and took it, and took it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, in this one moment, it is as if I just stood up, off my face.\u00a0 I just knew it was finished, and His work in me was complete, and I was forgiven, and restored.\u00a0 I felt the shame of my life\u2014just lifted, absolutely, and filled with a joy.\u00a0 The Bible talks about the joy of the Lord that will be your strength and a peace that passes understanding.\u00a0 It happened for me in a moment.\u00a0 That was really that radical, transformative moment, a 180-degree turnaround; and life has not been the same since then.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that can happen in a listener\u2019s heart, right now, because the same Jesus Christ, Who rose from the dead and defeated death\u2014because He\u2019s alive today.\u00a0 He changed your heart 18 years ago; and He can change that person\u2019s heart, wherever they are, right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 And He\u2019s calling you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, exactly.\u00a0 You have to answer the call.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let another day, where the sun goes down, occur without settling up with your God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 The Bible says our life is like a vapor, it comes and it goes.\u00a0 You have no idea when that will be.\u00a0 If God has been calling you, just refuse Him no longer.\u00a0 I just beg you.\u00a0 If I could do anything to compel you to confess Christ, and ask Him to forgive you, and follow Him, I would do it; but really, it\u2019s your decision.\u00a0 He\u2019s calling you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really is.\u00a0 Andrew, I want to thank you for being on the broadcast; but I have one last assignment, or one last thing I
